wifi net problem adding PCs

Q: wifi net problem adding PCs

I have 4 pc's using one cable modem and router...all connect fine to the internet and when I set it up, I made a home network for two of them to share files and they work fine. Today I tried adding the two others to the workgroup for file sharing and have run amuck.

all 4 run some flavor of windows xp with SP2 installed. The router is WEP encrypted. All use Norton Internet Security 2007. I ran the NETSETUP files from when I first set it up, but cannot tell that that did anything. I also went in to each new pc and enabled file sharing and joined the workgroup of the other two. I went into NIS on all pcs and entered the IP addresses of the others as TRUSTED.

I can go to MY NETWORK PLACES on any of the machines and see the others (both the "live" and "new" ones show this) but from the existing PCs I cannot access the new ones (error: PCNAME not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource etc etc). From the "new" pc's I can "see" the others but get that error message when I try to access anything.

I have tried pinging and cannot ping the new ones, the old ones ping fine.

I sure feel stupid and I'm wasting a lot of time... I know one of you has a 15 second solution and I was too stupid to try you sooner...

thanks in advance,

Tom O'Connell

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

"I have tried pinging and cannot ping the new ones, the old ones ping fine."

99% probability that it is a firewall problem, Tom. I know you configured Norton, but you need to revisit it. Apparently you are using static IP addresses on your LAN, but even so maybe you could try putting the entire range into the Trusted Zone. Or uninstall Norton on of the problem PCs and see if that makes a difference.

Im using windows 10 totally updated version and the problem im facing is that windows keeps adding numbers after my WiFi name/SSID and the number keeps on increasing. It aint causing any trouble with network usage but I still wanna fix it and wanna know whats causing this. Ive attached a picture with this thread where u can see the wifi name states Redmi 7 but my network name is just Redmi. This 7 was 2,3,4... some days ago. Please help me asap with this issue ill be grateful.

A:Windows keeps adding numbers after my WiFi name

I don't understand why that is a "problem" or why you are bothered, but I don't need to understand. In Network Connections you can right click on the connection name and select Rename and call it whatever you wish (within reason). I should add that you could do this in previous versions of Windows but I'm only assuming the ability has not been removed in Windows 10.

I tried to add a wireless wifi extender . It had me create a alternate network, ending with _ext . Problem is now it just says incorrect password when I try to connect to my regular network and the alternate one. I cannot get online now at all with my computers tablets etc. How do I delete the alternate network that was added. I reset everything. Didnt fix it

A:cannot login after adding wifi extender

You failed to mention the brand and model of wifi extender.

It also is helpful if you mention the current modem and router or gateway in use.

Hi,

I have a network that has a broadband cisco router and checkpoint firewall that I cannot touch. It was set up by our dept of Education, and has to be left alone. But one of the teachers has asked me to set up wifi access for the network.

I have set up a wireless access point D-link DWL-G700AP , and I can configure this assign IP addresses on the network, BUT I have to manually set the DNS and the gateway on the clients manually. The whole idea is to make this oblivious to the user.

Is there any device that I can get to act as a DHCP relay, to forward the DHCP broadcasts to the checkpoint firewall, i.e. so that both wired and wireless clients get their IP address, gateway and DNS servers from the checkpoint firewall.

thanks,
Jonathan

Hi

My motherboard got a port called Mini PCIE. It looks similar to the standard PCIE port but is much smaller (I guess that's why it's called mini ) AND it appears to be tilted 90 degrees to the right if I'm right. So I would have to place the card vertically. Space seems to be limited. Of course I could be wrong on that.

Board type is MSI AM1i

Photo is below. The port in question is just next to the two SATA data ports. (actually on the left, in the second pictures)
I'd like to install a Wifi card there. Please tell me. How and where? Where am I supposed to place the antennas? Do you know any good cards? I didn't buy the card yet, only the motherboard

Thanks a lot

^^ The mini PCIE port is just above (again, next to the white-blue capacitors and left to the sata ports), and lies vertically in the picture with a number tag written to it

I have an internet connection that I have extended to my Brother in law's house, next door. At the moment, I basically have two LAN cables coming out of my modem/router, one going to my computer and another, extended cable, going to his computer.
However, he wants to use his spare modem/router, which has wifi capability, to allow his son to use his own computer downstair with only wifi.
Therefore, will there be any conflicts if I simply splice in a Lan cable or add a lan socket for the second modem/router (wifi location.) at the appropriate point along Lan cable 2? See diagram below.
If there is a possibility of conflict what would be an alternate wiring method?

Thanks,
Tom.

A:Adding extra wifi (modem/router) to my already extended network

Good drawing and this will work just fine. In fact, that's what I use to get access at the far end of the house. Here's the trick;

router#1(lan slot) ---- (lan slot) router#2 with wifi
Notice that #2 WAN slot is left empty! This places all systems on the same subnet of the router#1 {what you are doing is making router#2 act like a switch which has wifi support (y) }

* Give router# a unique LAN address (If #1 is 192.168.1.1, then make #2 192.168.1.1) This will allow each to be manage via a browser connection
* in router#2 disable DHCP. This forces #1 to be the manager of the entire network and it will handout all IP addresses
Personally, I use the MAC addresses of my devices to enable router#1 to use Address Reservation of IP address for all devices attached to #1 (ie I map the devices to the range 1.2-> 1.10)

Then set the DHCP range in #1 to 1.100-1.50
These will be used for all devices attached (wired or wifi) to #2

Optional:
All systems can then use the firewall to allow or deny access for one or both halves of the network. EG: I permit access for 1-10 and 255 while denying 100-254ALL system must allow the top-end address 255 as that is the broadcast address that is used to hand out the DHCP data.

Hi all . Not sure if you remember me, been gone for a while.

So far, I have a cable linksys router for my 2 rigs at home. Works great - constant internet access, no hiccups, it's awesome. However, lately I've been thinking of using some WiFi devices (mainly Apple's Ipod Touch) when I'm just bored around the house or something.

But, there's a slight problem - how do I get WiFi? I guess if I had a wireless router, it'd all "just work". However, I like my current setup, and don't want extensive switching to a whole different router (what am I going to do with these cables I spent so much time on routing around doors and walls?). Is there some kind of WiFi "antenna" I can connect to my router (2 more open slots right now), which I can use for wireless devices? Or... maybe connect a wireless router to my cabled router O_o? Also, after I get a wireless thing, do I expect it to "just work"? Or is there some complicated setup involving WiFi?

I searched Newegg, but didn't find anything of the sort (other than wireless routers, obviously). Any cheap solution ? I don't want to splurge another 50+ bucks after getting $300+ handheld WiFi-enabled device -_-.

A:Adding WiFi to an existing cabled network (router) system?

Rick said:

A wireless access point should be the solution. They look a lot like routers usually - but without the routing stuff. .

This device would basically just add wireless capability to your existing setup without interfering with your current configuration.

An issue to consider though is that APs tend to be just as expensive as their router counterparts, despite routers having more versatility. For this reason, you may want to consider getting a router, but turning off its DHCP-server function and not plugging any devices into is WAN port (basically turns it into an AP). It would add a little extra confusion, but the extra utility might be nice...Click to expand...

Aha, interesting... Any specific pointers for a wireless access point? I actually read about them in a how stuff works WiFi article, but I couldn't find anything specific on Newegg. If I were to get a wireless router (again, any specific pointers? ), do I have to replace my main router? Or can I connect the wireless router to one of my main router slots ?

Either way, thanks for the quick reply

I recently updated my Inspiron 14" 5459 to the Windows 10 anniversary update, i noticed that when my wifi access point changes or wifi signal drops or turning off wifi, my laptop semi-freezes, you could still scroll with the mouse or track pad and select open tabs but that's all, clicking other icons and even the windows start menu does not work, if you wait for more than 5 minutes, everything goes back to normal. Waiting around for about 5 minutes is annoying so what I do is press ctrl alt delete and from there restart the laptop. my wifi adapter is updated to the most recent version and also both graphics card (intel hd 520 and amd radeon m335) is also updated to the latest version.  Any suggestion on how to resolve this issue?

A:after Windows 10 anniversary update, Inspiron 5459 freezes if wifi is turned off or wifi access point is changed, is there a solution to this problem?

Please confirm the wireless card from the device manger or the network control panel. Also please update the BIOS firmware to the latest version. The BIOS update should ideally be version v1.2.2. Also please try system out with  a LAN cable as well to confirm if is indeed caused by the wireless. Though this may not run a complete diagnostics on the network you can run a hardware diagnostics on the computer using the following steps

Shutdown the computer
Hold the 'Fn' key and turn on the computer
Let go of the 'Fn' key after 2 seconds

This is will initiate the H/w diagnostics. Please let us know if it completes or if  you run into any errors. If  you do run into any errors.

Hi All,

Win8:
I have two wifi APs in the home and I have it all set up so that one is the Internet by cell phone tether and the other is the cabled network via the router wifi.

Works just fine - except.

On wifi 1, Internet I have it set for "Connect automatically" which at boot up it does.

On wifi 2, Network I also have it set for "Connect automatically" which at boot up it does NOT do. I have to go in and connect manually even though the "Connect automatically" is checked.

It seems win8 sees "Connect automatically"and does it but then stops checking other connections. Probably a "feature."

Is there some way to force both "Connect automatically" to happen?

Thanks

A:Wifi Auto-Connect to two-wifi APs, problem

There is a group policy setting for this, but even if both are connected you will only be using one of those connections at a time.

Hello one and all,
I am sincerely hoping someone can assist with my little networking problem as i'm tearing my hair out now..

Here at work we have a Vigor Modem/Router hosting our connection to the world. It was originally on DHCP & the 4 computers & 2 printers found their own IP addresses without problem.

We added a Linksys router via ethernet (to a lan port not the wan) in another area of the yard. This was fine also on DHCP and connecting wirelessly from a laptop or mobile phone was a doddle.

Then our oh so wonderful IT geek decided to put the Vigor on a Static IP along with all the computers connected to it. This has some how cut off the wifi capability of the Linksys router now.

It is basically acting as a hub for two laptops and nothing else.

In simplistic terms with some detail what settings need changing on the Linksys if any?

The Vigors internal IP is 192.168.1.1
Linksys is 192.168.1.4
both on subnet 255.255.255.0

I have been advised to set the Linksys to a static IP on the Internet Connection option but what set of figures do i need for that??

Fingers crossed...

Stonkin

Sorry if this has already been discussed. Couldn't find on a search.

I have a small secured network in my office with a modem/router networking three computers wirelessly. I would like to add another router that would allow clients in the waiting room of my office to have internet access. Could you assist me in a setup or map? I already have a wireless Linksys router available to use as the second router.

Thank You

A:Adding Wifi Network to an Already Secured Network

Are those in the waiting room to be allowed into OR forbidden access to your Lan systems?

You already have

Code:
modem---router----your.lan.systems
to Isolate the W.R from your lan, connect

Code:

modem---router----your.lan.systems (assumed 192.168.1.x or 0.x)
|
+---new router (new channel+ssid+no encryption)
set LAN addresses and DHCP for 192.168.10.x

add firewall rule to ALL your existing LAN systems to deny src address range=192.168.10.0 thru 10.255

A:Problem when adding another RAM

Not enough info.

The Apacer could be broken or could be incompatible.

The pictures are poor quality.

The Apacer is PC2 6400 CL 5.

I have no idea about the Kingston; I can't read what it says on the label.

I can't look up the RAM you need because you don't give a motherboard model number.

And your system specs say you have a Gigabyte motherboard while you say it is an ECS.

I'd do both of the following:

Go to the web site of whoever actually made the motherboard and look up the specification sheet for that model. It should tell you what RAM is compatible.

Get the thing running with the Kingston. Then go to Crucial.com and let their configurator examine your PC and let it tell you what RAM is compatible.

I have tried both options and all that happens is that Windows starts loading the files and when it gets all the way to the right which I presume means that all files are loaded it does nothing else. I have tried waiting for about ten minutes with each option, but nothing happens. I contacted Kingston and they guarantee me that it is the right module. I don't want to have to return it for a replacement which Kingston offered to do. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be and how to fix it. You have helped me before, I am hoping someone can help me again.
Got an old computer, 9 yo, running on XP with 1GB of memory.
I wanted to add some more ram and "Crucial" told me the type of memory
I needed to buy. DDR PC2-5300 which I bought from Amazon 2GB (1GB x 2)

1) With the original in slot 0 I added the new ones into slots 1 & 2
Computer started but said the system had not shutdown properly
and wanted to scan the disc. At the end of the scan it said no
problems found, but instead of loading windows it wanted to scan
the disc again. when it did the same on the third time I realized it
was a continuous loop.

2) Took the old ram out and put the new ones into slots 0 & 1
Computer would not even start.

3) Tried the new ones in slots 0 & 2
Same result as 2)

Am I doing something wrong.

I had 2x 512mb sticks in my comp for a while now, working fine, but when I replaced them with the 2 new 1gb ea. sticks, my comp just starts and then restarts before hitting the windows phase over and over again. It still says 512mb on the start up screen and I just can't seem to get them to work together (ive tried all possible configs). The Gigabyte mobo manual says that slots 1+2 must be filled or 3+4, with no other different configurations for 2 sticks (my boards first 2 slots are purple, last 2 are orange).

I WANT to be able to use all 4, but the 2x 1gb sticks won't even work together. I've tried them both solo, and they work so it's not bad chips, nor bad slots. I don't know much about this, but I have a feeling this may be a bios troubleshooting problem? Either way, any input would be greatly appreciated. These are my specs - Thanks!

I was just going to grab some files I wanted off my old HD and put them on my new HD.

If i unplug the IDE cable from the old HD, then it boots fine. Maybe something with the boot sequence? Or since theres Windows XP on both HD's it could be running into a problem?

Thanks for any help.

I connected the HDD to all 4 SATA II inputs and with 3 different cables and it didn't work. I then removed the cable from my SSD to my HDD so the HDD is connected to a SATA III port. And it works.

So I asked the store about this and they said the SATA II ports are disabled and I can't seem to enable them in the BIOS. They added a PCI card where I can attach 2 SATA devices like a HDD. I tried with both but with the same result of it not finding the HDD. I don't know if I have to configure anything beforehand to enable the PCI.

Motherboard is the P67A-C43. Not the P67A-C43 B3. MSI forum confirmed the SATA II ports on non P67A-C43 B3 motherboards to be not working. And the SATA mode is IDE.

Is there a way to fix this?

I have been trying to add more memory to my system but not having any luck. I currently have 2 sticks of pc3200/512mb and want to add another 1gig stick but am having problems with it working. I have to press re-set after starting my computer in order for it to boot. I have tried removing the existing memory and only use the the 1gig stick but get the same results. I also tried a high-density stick with the same results, was able to swap that for a low density stick that was supposed to be compatible with all mobo's. Same results. Tried the same thing a year ago with another 512mb stick, same results. The 2 sticks that work great are both different manufacturers, so doesn't seem to be a problem in that regards.
Here are my specs:
p4 2.4 gig processor
via p4pb 400-l mobo
via apollo px400 chipset (vt8754 & vt8235)
ati 9600pro video card

Any help/suggestions?

All Mb's have specific configurations as to which slots are to be used with different numbers of sticks of Ram. Also it is best to use the recommended (tested)brand /type of Ram .
Go to the Website and confirm this info
It is never a good idea to mix different sticks , and generic ram is like shooting dice.

Hi.

I am having a problem adding a new VPN Connection on Windows XP Professional.

After staring the New Connection wizard, I select "Connect to the network at my workplace" and click Next. On the next screen, there are 2 choices - Dial-up Connection and VPN connection. However, both are greyed-out and I cannot select either.

The same thing happens if I am logged into XP as Administrator, or as my userid.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to get this fixed.

Thanks!

I came across the same problem. But I noticed that if you enter your area code into the dial up networking properties that it will then let you make selections. Hope That helps.

Recently decided (not sure why now!) to add some RAM to my system. One bank of 512 is what I have, and adding another 512 is what I want to do. Every time I put the extra stick (which is the same as the other) into DIMM slot 2 my system gets unstable and programs fail to load or crash with regularity. Why is it about adding the second stick ?

Thanks.

I am wanting to add my printer that is hooked up to my other PC but windows can't seem to find it on my network.
Anyone help?

A:Adding Printer Problem

I've moving you to Networking, you should get better help there.

But you need to help us by telling us more about your situation. What version of Windows are you running? How are the connected, hows the printer connected? Is the printer connected directly to another computer or is it a network printer? Can you browse the network and see other computers and shares?

IE7's "Add a Favorite" process is making me crazy! Each time I go to add a new favorite that is to be added to a specific folder rather than the generic "Favorites", I get a huge expanded list of all folders and subfolders. Since I have a huge list of favorites, some with huge lists of subfolders, this makes adding a favorite a real pain! I can find no way to tame this to just the primary-level folders, yet my husband, who is also using IE7, gets only the primary folders when he performs the same operation. I've spent hours trying to find the answer to this on Microsoft's sites, without success. Is the only answer going back to IE6?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

A:IE7 problem when adding favorite

Just delete some folders, and make the the names less specific, that way you can add much more to it, without it being a total mess.
Such as making a folder entitled "Gaming" instead of being specific like "Nintendo Gaming".

I have recently installed Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and tried to install my Epson Stylus CX5400 printer. At first Vista recognized it was a USB device. I installed the drivers from the epson site and it claimed it was installed successfully. Yet every time I turned on the printer Vista said that it needed to install drivers for it, but thinking that the drivers were already installed successfully I clicked on the do-not-show-this-again button. But in fact my printer wasn't installed. I used the printer wizard making a new port (USB) and it showed my printer on the list when I used windows update. It said it installed everything, yet when I went to print a test page nothing happened, but there was an icon under the printers folder that said "Epson Stylus CX5400." I deleted that printer and tried everything again. But Vista no longer recognizes the device when I plug it into a USB port, the Epson drivers continue to say that it's installed successfully but it's not, and now the printer wizard no longer has the CX5400 on the list after using windows update. So I had to manually type the printer I had into the blank field and, again, Vista said that it was installed successfully but the test page didn't print despite there being an icon for the CX5400 in the printers folder.
So:
1. Is there a way for Vista to restore recognization for my printer?
2. Is there a way to reverse installing the epson drivers and start again?
3. Is there a way to get t... Read more

I am trying to set up my new Aspire Z3-715. I have 5 users accounts created in the computer. When I tried to add the 6th account, i can't sign in. After the password was keyed in, it would say: Welcome and immediately say logging off. I tried deleting the affected account and set up a new one with different user name (many times) and the same thing happened. Eventually I created the 6th account and changed it to administrator, then I can log in. But the task bar, the  Windows key and the search box are completely frozen. The other 5 users in the computer appear fine. Please help.

I just got a new Compaq computer running Win XP. I tried moving a HD from my old computer that was running Win 98SE. The old HD is recognized by the BIOS and under device manager. It can even populate all the right disc info. However, when I go to disk management under XP, it does see the disc but I cannot assign it a driver letter. That option is grey'ed out. The only active option in the menu is delete partition.

How can I get XP to recognize this disk so I can transfer my old info? Thanks!

A:Problem adding a 2nd drive in Win XP

Back in the mists of time,I remember reading somewhere that "Go Back" or some partition managers somehow "label" drives in a way that XP can`t read.I can`t remember the details, but if they`re on the old HD,you could try uninstalling them.

System:  XPS8300 [i7-2600, 3.40GHz], vintage 2011Q4 OS:  Win10 Home, x64 [build 1709] I decided to add RAM to upgrade from 12GB to 16GB.  There are four RAM card slots, and the original configuration was 2x2GB, 2x4GB DDR3 SDRAM, all Micron rated at 1333MHz. I looked to swap out the two 2GB cards for a 2x4GB kit, and after some online research opted for the Micron Crucial kit CT2K51264BD160BJ rated at 1600MHz.  The Crucial website showed this as compatible with my system, and this kit appears to be common and popular with purchasers.  Deciding between the equally-priced "high density" version (suffix BJ) and the "regular" version (suffix B) was a less clear decision online, but both are sold as compatible with the XPS8300 and I opted for the BJ. After installation, Win10 recognizes new hardware and This PC\Properties reports 16GB RAM present.  However, after booting is complete I invariably get a BSOD within a minute or two, with a variety of codes from one experience to the next:  "Page fault in nonpaged area," "Kernel security check failure," "System thread exception not handled," "Memory management," etc., etc.  Happily, remounting the original 2GB cards restores sanity to the system. I'd welcome some advice here.  Is there some easy way to tell whether one or both of my new cards is bad, or is something else likely to be going on?  Is there some aspect of w... Read more

A:Problem in adding RAM to an XPS8300

One problem that frequently comes up on computer forums, all PC"s not just a Dell is that if all the memory modules are not the exact same there can be issues.  Even though you bought Micron memory they are not exactly the same models so the compatibility can occur.
However, to test the new memory, remove all the original memory and just use the two 4 GB new Crucial memory modules, however make sure you install them in the proper memory slots to ensure dual channel operation.  e.g. slots 1 and 2 or slots 3 and 4.  If the PC runs without problems then the new memory modules are OK and the compatibility issue becomes the probable problem.
Here is some info from the Dell manual

I have been using an HP printer successfully until it failed recently and needs repairs. I want to switch to another printer which I also have but when I click on :"Add a Printer" I get an error message which reads "operation could not be completed. The print spooler service is not running." What does this mean and how can I correct the problem?

A:Adding Printer problem

If XP,start/run type in services.msc
This will give you a ist of system services.Make sure print spooler is started.Print spooler has a dependency of rpc,so both need to be started.Would be a good idea to make sure that the start up type for both is automatic.
