T420 stuck on Lenovo splash screen

Q: T420 stuck on Lenovo splash screen

Hi I am new to this community, so I would like to applogise if I mist a simillar subject (I did check some but non resolved my problem). I have a thinkpad t420, I bought a used one. It worked great, and I bought it from a friend, that I trust. I installed a ssd drive, was usnig Linux, and everything worked for one month. But then I bought a HDD caddy, and replaced the CD rom. After that my thinkpad worked for a day (although it didnt recognize the second HDD). The next day I tried searching BIOS for some settings, and after restarting my laptop it was stuck on Lenovo splash screen, rebooting in a loop. I tried:- removing and replacing the caddy with the CD rom,- replacing my SSD drive,- replacing RAM (both slots),- reseting BIOS,- running a diagnostic CD (but it will not boot, neither can I boot from an USB) My google search showed that it could bi a problem with one of the USB pins inside of one of the ports (short circuit or something like that), but I could not finde any damage. So I am thinkig that the motherboard could be damaged, but I can access BIOS, but that is the only thing I can do with it. I would be wery thenkful for any advice or help, before I go to an official Lenovo service for help. Thnak you! Z.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Zjaz123456,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not booting to OS on your ThinkPad T420.
Is both HDD &SSD detecting in BIOS?

Check with removing CMOS battery, make sure you have disconnected the system from AC adapter and battery is removed.

Remove both the drive & battery from the system, disconnect the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 sec perform this step for 2 to 3 times and then connect only the drive which is having OS installed in it. Use only power adapter to switch ON the system.

Hope this helps. Do post us back for further assistance!

Best regards,
Hemanth Kumar

A:ThinkCentre: Stuck at Lenovo splash screen after lenovo solution bios upgrade

I would try resetting the BIOS using the jumper, or by taking out the CMOS battery, wait a minute or two, and then replace it and try booting up. See page 73 of the Hardware Maintenance Manaul linked below for location of the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper (# 20) https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/m83m93p_hmm.pdf Clearing the CMOS (BIOS)1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer. 2. Remove the computer cover. 3. Locate the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper on the system board. 4. Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) to the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3). 5. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. 6. Turn on the computer and leave it on for approximately 10 seconds. Then, turn off the computer by holding the power switch for approximately five seconds. 7. Repeat step 1 through step 2. 8. Move the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper back to the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2). 9. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. Good Luck,

Hi Azadkv,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I?m sorry to hear that your G500 Laptop is not booting to Windows and hanging at Lenovo Logo and the issue persists even after performing Flee-Power step. Hence, I suggest to perform BIOS reset and check if the issue persists. Below are the steps to perform BIOS reset:

To access BIOS menu turn OFF the Laptop and press the NOVO button located beside power button.
Then to reset the BIOS to its defaults click on ?F9? Key and select YES.
Now click on ?F10? Key to save the changes that are done in BIOS, the computer will automatically restart.

Do post us back if the issue persists.

Best Regards

The first thing I look at if a machine hangs at startup is the USB ports.  Physical damage can create shorts which cause these symptoms.  Check for bent pins or a tongue broken off.

Hi everyone. I've got a big problem with my laptop. I will explain the whole situation.  I recently upgrade my laptop with a Samsung Evo ssd and a 8 Gb ram ddr3 1600. At the beginning everything was fine but then, sometimes I got screen problems (like flickering) and windows 10 crashed. Now the biggest problem : my laptop is stuck at lenovo logo with loading dots. Even if I try to load USB windows tool (to install new os) it doesn't work. I also tried to install Ubuntu unsuccessfully. I searched on the web all the possible solutions. I temporary removed the battery, ac adapter and hold the power button for 30 secs, but nothing. I also read to remove the cmos battery but I can't locate it in my IdeaPad z500. I also searched on the hardware maintainance pdf but there is nothing about that. I also removed ssd and new ram  with old components but it's still the same. I don't know what to do know, please help me!! I hope I didn't screw my laptop

Hello folks,  I seem to be having some issue with installing Windows 10. I found the Lenovo Upgrade Checklist and followed the steps point for point. (https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/ht104203) After downloading the update, it requested a restart and booted up into the update screen. The update got to around 20% and restarted as noted on the update screen.  Once again I'm presented with the Lenovo boot screen but this time it doesn't seem to be progressing, nothing has changed for the last 50 minutes and counting. What was other people's experience through the upgrade? Should I be prepared for a longer wait or is this abnormal to the process? Thanks for taking the time to read!

Hello! I have done some snooping around, but can't find anything that explivitly solves the problem I have been having. When my P50 is plugged in at my desk (eg. Monitor, Ethernet, Keyboard, Audio Out, Power), and it has shut down / hybernated when I turn it back on it will stick at the LENOVO splash screen (looks to me like it locks up because it won't even let me into advanced boot options).  Temperary Solution: Problem seems to resolve with removal of battery, hold power button, plug in AC, boot with only AC power. (Sometimes this takes several attempts). Thinking about just setting shut down time to forever to avoid altogether.  Causes: I suspect it has something to do with my monitor (just a cheap ASUS off of Amazon), it is not a repeatable problem either, it only happens off a total cold start and maybe only 1/5 times at that.  Other: BIOS Version 1.52  Any opinions are welcome    -P50-Engineering

Hey all,

I have recently decided to restore my laptop back to factory settings for various reasons.

The factory settings on the recovery partition mean returning to Windows 8.1 and then upgrading back to Windows 10.

I have no problem returning to Windows 8.1 but when I use the Windows Media Creation tool to download Windows 10 and install something happens.

I start the installation where it says the computer will restart several times, but during one of the restarts it gets stuck at the Lenovo splash screen.

I have since run restore to get back to 8.1 a couple of times just in case there was a problem there but still the same problem happens when trying to upgrade to 10.

I have had no problem returning to 8.1 and then upgrading to 10 in the past.

I'm not sure what kind of information you'll need from me so request and I will let you know.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mark

A:Windows 10 Upgrade - Installation stuck at Lenovo splash screen

I forgot to add:
After it has been onthat screen for a couple of hours I decide to hold the power button down on the laptop to force it to turn off.
After that it restores 8.1 automatically and presents this error:

We couldn't install Windows 10
We've set your PC back to the way it was right before you started installing Windows 10.

0xC1900101 - 0x3000D
The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during MIGRATE_DATA operation

Other posts in this Forum have stated that antivirus could be the problem and removing it has solved the problem for other users, however, mine is a wipe and return to factory and I have uninstalled that awful McAfee that comes with Lenovo.

I just purchased an adapter plug that allows me to connect my Lenovo/IBM thinkpad (T420) to my HDTV by plugging the HDMI cord into my TV and the other end to this adapter plug which converts the HDMI cable into a male plug which fits into my display port (there is no HDMI port on this model computer). It worked, but now I can't remove the adapter plug...it's stuck in the laptop display port. I do not know if the problem is caused by the male adapter plug or the female jack in the computer, but they're locked together now.

I have previously read review comments (on these HDMI/display port adapter plugs) mentioning this jamming happening on more than a couple occasions, but I don't recall any resolutions being mentioned except to break off (and destroy) the plug and possibly damage the display port as well. I called Lenovo tech support but they said I'd have to mail the computer to them to get it fixed. I'd prefer avoiding that if possible even though my warranty is still in effect and it would be of no cost to me.....just time lost without a computer.

I'd greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who may be aware of how to resolve this problem (and also how to avoid it happening again) without doing damage to either the plug or especially the computer display port.

Thanks for your consideration in any case....

After a power outage 3 weeks ago I was having issues with the system going down at around 5 minutes and then less and less time after that. I was told it was a display issue and to uninstall and reinstall my display drivers. I uninstalled my drivers and it was still the same. I felt like it was temperature related. I found my graphics card (Radeon 5700) was dirty. I cleaned it and thought I was back in business. Everything was back to normal, all I needed to do was update my graphics drivers. Once that was done, my computer would no longer load past the Windows splash screen.

I used Puppy Linux on a flash drive and I have access to everything. I can use the internet and access all my files. This to me says that it is not a hardware issue.

The fact that when I try to go into safe mode it gets stuck for more than a day on classpnp.sys (when I finally give up). I understand that classpnp.sys has loaded but, there is something after that that the computer can't load. I have seen some people have atipcie.sys load after classpnp.sys and it makes sense to me that it would be a graphics driver that is causing the issue.

I need my Windows 7 up and running for school and work projects. Any ideas, thoughts, or help would be greatly appreciated.

To make a long story short, I've been asked to help fix a friends mom's U410 laptop which wasnt activiting Windows 8.1 properly (Was Windows 8 OOB). After struggling with the activation for a few hours, I backed up the data and decided to just run the Lenovo one key recovery. During the recovery process, the installation had failed. When I attemped to reboot, no Lenovo splash screen was loading - just a black screen (although i can hear the cooling fan start, and hear the harddrive spin up. I tried to access the boot menu thru the novo button, and nothing would load; still a black screen. After researching for a few more hours, I had found multiple threads about bios updates required to be able to access bios with windows 8, and other threads about gpus on these units booting to a second screen (which i did test, and the second monitor does indicate a signal). None of the solutions on those threads have given positive results.   Basically, I've run out of options and am looking for some suggestions. The only thing that shows up on the display at anytime is the small blue novo menu when the button is pressed (normal start up, bios setup, boot menu, system recovery - all of which just leave a black screen). Thanks.

Updating my intel RAID driver fixed the issue where I was stuck at the splash screen after the first reboot during initial installation (upgrading directly from Win 7 without loss of files)

Download the third link (iata_enu.exe - version 11.7.0.1013), after download completes, run the executable. Install. Do a reboot. Start the Windows 8 installer again - watch magic happen.

You could try doing a repaor install of XP. however if it is a piece of hardware that has become defective and is causing the problem then a repair install isnt going to fix it.

It's so weird before it was rare (stuck at splash screen glitch) i did the upgrade from win 7 to 10 and my system had random skips and black screens. Then my 120 ssd died but not before i could clone it and it did the same on the new ssd. So i tried a clean install and cured all my problems all but 1, on cold boots i get to the windows splash screen before login and the little circle made of dots barely moves and takes about 5 minutes to get to the password screen. Once i get the login screen its fast as heck and all is well but wth is up with the splash screen? Before it was rare though like one out of ten boots would do that now fresh install every boot is crazy slow.

Hello,

I'm new to your forum and hope to find help.

I have a Toshiba Tecra A9 stuck on the splash screen after my intervention in the bios to boot from a USB stick.

_DETAILS:_
At the start, it turns more on the startup screen with the 5 symbol of choice (hard disk, USB, etc.).
Clicking on a symbol and nothing responds I can not enter the bios.
It is displayed at the top of the screen: In Touch With Tomorrow TOSHIBA and five symbols.

I disconnected two small green battery on the motherboard for 10 minutes, but nothing has changed.
That said, I do not know if I disconnected the battery good (y 'have it two?).
It also would it make a metal button battery on the motherboard?

Thank you in advance for your help.

If yes, can you choose HDD as bootable device?

I do not understand why you cannot enter BIOS settings? Have you tried F2 at start-up?

I've been through everything from uninstalling drivers to disconnecting unneeded hardware and/or disabling stuff that is loading up in normal mode, even a repair install. still no help.

PLZZZ help, need the PC for my exams coming on 1st Oct

Hi everyone,

i created various flashdrives with win to go 8.1. i did it manually (diskpart, etc),i used WinToUSB,i used AOMEI Partition Assistant, all in all i have used 4 drives. 2 x USB3,2 x USB2. In all cases the results were the same, no matter on which machine i use it ...
Windows seems to start, i see the blue logo, the loading circle doing it's thing, but that's it ... firsts i thought i just need to be more patience, but i'm running this now for roundabout 4 hours on my notebook, and nothing happens...
sooo, what's the trick ? is there some kind of magic BIOS setting i need to set for booting all the way through ?
I'm trying this now for a week, i don't know what else to do :/
Thanks in advance for a tip.

Hi All,

So just recently built my first computer and put it together with some experienced friends. When we were finished it worked fine and there were no issues however I later came home woth the PC to find out it had stopped working. The issue is that I was stuck on the splash screen of the motherboard and couldn't enter the bios with the on screen commands (keyboard would not respond). So i took it back to my friend and we found out that the power supply was the issue however upon buying a new power supply, i am again stuck on the splash screen. I have tried using different keyboard and mouse and clearing the CMOS.

Specs:
Windows 10 OS
Ryzen 3 1200 CPU
ASRock AB350M Motherboard
GEFORCE GTX 970 Graphics card
G.Skill Ripjaws V (2x4gb) 2400mhzRAM
Thermaltake 450W TR2 series 80 plus

Okay this one has me stumped. I have system I just finished putting together with some pieces from left over from an upgrade and some new pieces as well. I get XP Home to install and everything and even get many things updated and all looks fine. Until you power down. Once you have powered the system down and come back to it.... you turn it on and the windows splash screen comes on and it the little lights run back and forth like four times and then when they get to the end of the little box, everything stalls out. The keyboard dies, the hdd activity light stops working, everything. I have tried using the restore functions in the XP disk to no avail. I even brought the hdd back and got a new one thinking it had something to do with the hdd being bad or something. But no the new one does the same thing. I have tried contacting Microsoft but they are no help at all... they won't help you unless you get the product ID number which you need to be in Windows to get.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Is there a jumper on my Motherboard I should change? I have been pulling my hair out all day with this one. I have quite a bit of computer experience and nothing has frustrated me quite like this one. Maybe I am just looking too hard and the answer is in front of me.

Any help would be appreciated.

Have you checked in the BIOS lately, you might be suffering from CMOS battery failure, the way to check is set the BIOS up (if its lost its settings) and when you turn the PC off by shutting down from the desktop leave the power supply 'ON', with an ATX PSU to conform to the spec it supplies a trickle of juice to the CMOS even when the PC is off, the only time it uses the battery is when the PSU is disconnected from the mains supply. If the PC boots next time 'cos the settings have stuck, try next time pulling the plug from the wall overnight and if it fails next day, go get a new CMOS battery- usually a 2302 about ?2.00.

I'm working on the tenuous assumption that the BIOS is set to auto detect the drives so it knows where your OS is but then cant load drivers etc for the OS as the BIOS hasn't given the OS any hardware details to pole.

Of course it could be dodgy memory or a disk too.

I have a Dimension E521 with Windows Vista. Recently:

Whenever I start my computer after a certain time period like (3-4hrs) it gets stuck on the Dell splash screen. Then if i hold the power button and re-turn on the computer, it works after 1-2 tries, and the computer turns on normally. Does anyone have a solution?

This only started happening like a week ago

So basically, I have an MSI CX61 2QF Nvidia Geforce 940m 4gb ram, running windows 10. The screen broke, so my friend put a new screen on, in the mean time i had moved my HDD into my old laptop and used that. Fine. Now I have my MSI laptop back and the screen is fine, MSi splash screen comes up, then it goes to the little circle loading thing, and it just sits there. The longest I've waited is 15 minutes, but it just keeps 'loading' (though it clearly isn't). At first it got stuck on AVG watchdog screen, but I deleted AVG and it still doesn't work. I managed to get in on Safe Mode, but then I realised I didn't know what the next step is. The fact I could boot up in safe mode made me think it's not a hardware issue, I think the laptop is fine, but it just won't load at all. What should I do once in safe mode or what else should i do otherwise?

I currently use a 600x900 resolution monitor, but couple of days ago I attached a 1080p Samsung Tv and used it as a PC monitor. When I returned back to my original 1600x900 monitor the PC got stuck at the splash screen and didn't boot. I tried reseating the RAM and my Graphics Card but still it is giving the problem.

Before i faced this issue i occasionally heard clicking sounds in my HDD, ran many tests but none reported any problem. I even posted a question about that here in TSG. I dont know what to do. Tried resetting bios by removing the small battery from the mobo but still the same issue.

I tried booting live Ubuntu CD and that gave some error with some text mentioning some problem with atapi sata something like that, forgot to write that error code and now it is not showing up. But the PC is not working.

It seems that my HDD have some issues. Don't know exactly whats causing the problem as testing the hdd shows no problem.

This pc is old that i built in 2013 but didn't use it that often other than gaming.

Following are some info that might be useful.

processor - i5 3470
mobo - b75m d3h gigabyte
ram - 8gb hyperX fury
hdd - toshiba
dvd - LG
graphics - GTX 560ti OEM

thanks in advance
