Recover Corrupted Excel Files (password protected)

Q: Recover Corrupted Excel Files (password protected)

Hi,

I have encountered this problem which is bugging me for days now.
I was just creating back ups of my files to a different location of my PC (diff. partition, to be exact), the usual copy and paste. After a few minutes, I got this error that says 123.xlsx cannot be copied because the file is missing. I decided to skip it and continue backing up other files. After copying, I tried to locate and open the 123.xlsx file. The file was there but upon opening and after entering the password, it says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." I have 3 files like this, all of which are password protected. So I'm assuming that the password protection of excel has something to do with it.

I have tried multiple excel recovery tools from google. Even the steps for recovering corrupted files from Microsoft website, none of them worked.

I'm using MS Excel 2013, windows 8.1 64 bit; if it helps.

Please, I'm desperate. The files are equal to months of work. ( I know, I know, i should back up my files more often.)

Best regards,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I have 2 corrupted Excel files that I store on Microsoft SharePoint.  I store hundreds of other Excel 2013 files there, but 2 recently became corrupted.  Actually, the only 2 that became corrupted were password protected.  When I try to open each file, it says that they can't be opened because they are corrupted.

I've tried every available recover option and advice; recover formula, data, excel recovery software, open and repair, etc.  I believe that because the files are password protected, standard Excel recovery programs won't work.  I've tried 6 of the more common ones that come up in a google search and they all can't repair the file.  I can't remove the password because it won't open due to the corruption.  In other words, I don't have the option to enter a password because it says that it is corrupted before I have a chance to enter a password.

I've heard that it might be ransom ware or a virus, but nothing has popped up on my computer and all of my non-password protected Excel files are corrupted.

I've tried opening and repairing the file with Excel 2007, too...no luck.

I'm running Windows 8.1, Excel 2013.  Both corrupted Excel files are small...less than 300 kb.

I have the password, so has anyone else had this problem?  If not, does anyone know of someone I could hire to extract the data that I had in the spreadsheet?

Situation: Windows XP Home system had Windows folder irreparably damaged by malware (could no longer boot to desktop under any circumstances).

1. I attached the drive to another system and created an Acronis TrueImage archive of the entire drive.
2. I then returned the drive to the original machine new-installed XP Pro.

Problem: I cannot recover any of the documents from the Desktop folder (among others) of the old Documents and Settings folder on the image archive EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THE PASSWORD.

-- How do I do this? (Note: Since this is an read-only image, I cannot modify permissions, etc; and since the D&S folder's contents are password-protected, I can't simply copy them out of the archive onto the drive.)
Has anybody just made a utility which will recover everything after you enter the password?

A:Recover password-protected Documents and Settings files from an archive?

It has nothing to do with passwords (unless you somehow encrypted your folders), it's a normal situation when a hard drive is moved to a different system or the original hard drive on a system is replaced.Windows provides free access to all files which are not in the Docs & Settings folders on a system partition, while access to these folders takes a tad more effort.Try Taking Ownership - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421.Louis

When I password protect an Excel file and someone opens it, it says "file name is reserved by my name". How can I change the value of my name?

A:Solved: Excel Password Protected Files

I am not sure if this will work, because I can only sometimes get that "...reserved by (name)" to pop up - don't know why.
But you can try two things - go to Tools, Options, Security, and click "Remove personal information from file properties on save", then go to General and change the name there, prior to saving or password protecting the file.

While saving a microsort word document to memory stick using microsoft works the program started not responding and shutdown. The file i was trying to save it as was not created and the original file i was working on became corrupt and will not open. Would it be better to try and fix my corrupt file or would my I be able to recover the file I was saving too? What would be the best way of doing this?

To fix the corrupt file I have tried using Microsoft Text Recovery and that only returned 4000+ pages of code. The same thing happened while i previewed it in Docrepair. Are there any other ways of finding this file or is it completely lost.

A:i need to recover files from a corrupted hd

Zero Assumption Recovery (ZAR) might do it. If Windows will recognize the disk, which yours is, ZAR claims it can recover files off the disk. This includes deleted files. You can download it for free and try it out. It has a limitation of four folders it will recover until you purchase a license but that will give you chance to find out if the drive is recoverable. I've used it twice. Once on a camera module and once on a crashed disk. It worked pretty darn good and I was able to recover hundreds of photos and files. I think it paid for itself. On files that have had the index deleted or corrupted, it will assign the file a number id but that's better than loosing the file. It works from the inside out and walks the disk as it analyzes the data. It's worth a try.

Download critical data recovery software - computer data recovery with ZAR.

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried...
    ...to format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

Hi everyone!

Could someone inform software that are proven, can recover corrupted Office files.

Remembering that even using the Office 2013, could not correct them.

Grateful for the attention!

A:Corrupted files Office - How to recover them

Well...files which are corrupted are damaged...there is no guarantee or expectation that can undo that.

Typically, if the files are program or system files...the user can uninstall/reinstall the application or run the Windows tools which attempt to deal with file corruption.

If the files are data files used by a given program...IME, the only tool available that may work would be the chkdsk /r command.

Data-recovery software is pretty much designed to copy files which are otherwise inaccessible...it cannot repair corrupt/damaged files.  At best, it will copy those files to a new location.

I'm curious as to how you know that the files are damaged...and what type of files are they?

On my family's oldest computer (a Dell Dimension 8200, running Windows XP), we have recently gotten an error message that reads as follows.

"WARNING: Dell?s Disk Monitoring System has detected that drive 0 on the primary EIDE controller is operating outside of normal specifications. It is advisable to immediately back up your data and replace your hard-disk drive by calling your support desk or Dell Computer Corporation.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility."

Now, it says to back up the files immediately, but when I try and start up the computer, it takes forever but can get to the User Accounts screen (where you choose as whom you want to log in). When you select someone, it crashes and reboots. In my opinion, this computer is so out of date that we should just get rid of it, but my dad still thinks there are documents that he wants to save. I'm trying to just get the files off this machine and stored somewhere (on a different network computer or external hard drive on the network), but I can't access the files from anywhere.

I have the recovery console option or safe mode, but I have never used either of these, so I don't want to mess things up further. Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Hello everyone,

I hope somebody can help with my problem.
There's a password protected workbook, that I need to copy structure from in order to create a template. There are about 50 worksheets in that workbook with lots of formulas. I just don't want to try and recreate everything (design and formulas) manually - cell-by-cell, because it would take weeks. Let alone mistakes that are inevitable. When I try to just copy any worksheet from workbook in question and paste it to newly created workbook, all the formulas are gone and only actual calculated values get pasted. So, is there any workaround or trick to solve this problem? I don't seem to find any.
Thank you in advance.

Still having issues with a Backup file that was created on XP-PRO. Icreated the backup to my D:\ as I was going to Re-format my C:\ in order to re-install my O/S. Once I was ready to recover that backup i got an error message that read"This file contains Unrecognized data and cannot be used". The only suitable way that I have found to recover these files is by paying upwards of $600.00 to a professional data recovery co. That is not at all a feasible option, so I have given up on recovering the entire backup file and am now simply focused on recovering specific files. Is there a program which allows me to "pick & choose" which files I want to recover from a corrupted backup file? I know it's a shot in the dark, but I am at my wit's end. Thanks for taking the time to read about my problem.

A:Recover SPECIFIC files only from a corrupted Backup file?

If that was possible, your problems would be over.

The backup will likely be a single file, with complex compression. Unlikely a file-by-file collation. Part of it will be a table of contents, which when uncompressed allows the file to be reconstructed to its many discrete files.

Unless you can actually open the file, I just cannot see how you could extract some discrete portions. The corruption is severe enough that the file structure is no longer recognised, so I simply can't envisage how you could take a section of the compressed code to extract anything, as its unlikely to be possible to determine what part of what file it is.

I wish you luck and hope someone has an answer, but doubt that it's going to be a runner.

I have a workbook for Orders with data retrieved from a Customers workbook that I want to password protect. At the moment, when the user wants to place a new order, he clicks on a button and a macro fills in the cells for the next row, actually entering the link in the form
Code:
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=VLOOKUP(RC[-2],'C:\path\Customers.xlsx'!CustomerData,3,FALSE)"
The cells in the worksheet thus look up the data from the Customers workbook and offer these as suggested details for the new order - the user may then manually overtype e.g. delivery address etc. Once the order has been finalised, another command button removes the links from this row, pasting the entered values back into their own cells, and entirely deletes the sensitive data so no record of credit card data remains on this sheet.

My problem is that I want to secure the Customers workbook with a password. It contains credit card information, including authorisation code, as well as the customer's full name and address. But if I set a password on this workbook, the user is asked to supply the password not only when updating the workbook links but also for EACH instance of the macro filling in a linked cell - some 15 or so times per transaction.

I would like to perhaps set a global variable asking for the password when the orders sheet is first opened, and store it for the duration of the session, then lose it when the workbook is closed.

You'll have to go in (in an Administrator account) and take ownership of the files in order to access them. Open up Windows Explorer (Start...Run...type in "explorer.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter) and navigate to the account's folder. Right click on it and select "Properties", then select the "Security" tab...If the tab isn't visible, then you'll have to boot into Safe Mode and use the Administrator account there to access the folder using the above directions....Once you're in the Security tab, click on the Advanced buttonThen click on the Owner tabDouble click on your (or his) account name to take ownershipThen put a checkmark in the box that states "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"Click on Apply and then on OK to make the changes effective. Close the rest of the dialog and you should be able to access the files now.Be advised that I've found this process to be a bit finicky - so you may have to drill down into the directories beneath the main one and reapply the changes. FYI - here's a guide that I wrote a while back about how to do this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/42756/how-to-fix-an-access-denied-errors/

Hello sportman32922 and welcome to BC

Reading between the lines here, I think what you mean is that when you scan with a security program it says that it cannot scan certain files because they are password protected. Am I right? If this is the case, please provide the names of some of the files or programs that are password protected. My guess is that these are connected with other security programs, in which case you have nothing to worry about.

uh-oh.......

1) call them and ask them for the password
2) pay for a service that provides that solution
3) treat people right and they won't try to screw you when they leave bitter and angry (kinda-sorta just joking about that one )

but seriously.....
think about it.........
if password protected files were so easy to bypass.....
how "protected" would they really be???

bottom-line:

if you can open the file....
then copy the contents to a new unprotected file....
and then save it

if you can't open the file.....

I have a harddrive with windows xp. The operating sysytem crashed and I could not recover the original windows. I decided to get a new bigger harddrive and reload windows.
The files that is on the old drive like my photo's and word docs I need to transfer it to my new drive. I can however not do this because windows tells me that the file cannot be accessed. I suppose this is because of the password that was put thre by me.
Is there a way to recover these files from the old drive ??

When I run my BitDefender or Shield 2010, S&D has a number of Password Protected "recovery" files that can't be scanned. Is this a problem? Either way, is there a way to eliminate them... or should I even worry about them?

Thanks.

I have the same thing happening with my anti virus program, I contacted the vendor and was told that some hackers have found a way to exploit the programs using MS scanning tools. Mine shows up when I defrag, I have X number of VP files that cannot be read. We may be hearing more about this from others, If it effects one it probably can effect many if not all VP programs.

I see that WinXP sharing is far more complicated than Win98... I need to share files and protect them with password so only authorised people may download them... How do I do that? And what services have to be started? :)

I have two old WordPerfect 5.0 and 5.1 files that are password protected. I do not have WordPerfect software on my computer and it is not readily available to me.

I do have Office XP. That version of Word will convert WordPerfect files and display them if the WordPerfect files are not password protected, but it will not open password protected files.

Any thoughts as to how I can open and view the password protected WordPerfect files short of installing WordPerfect on my system?

Thanks.

Steve

Hi,
Yesterday I went to the cybercafe to do some work. I used the imation thumbdrive. The excel file inside this thumbdrive, which was protected by a password, was erased partially.

I scanned the thumbdrive with AVG anti virus program and no viruses was detected.
I wonder can I still recover this excel file which is still protected by a password. How do i prevent this from happening again.

Thanks

I previously went through all the steps to get rid a small armada of viruses and junk. In the end, all ended up well, and I ended up downloading and installing Avantis. It has since worked very well, but I am a little concerned on the last scan that I did. The results were a whole lot of files that were "unreadable" due to a password protection. They are mostly recovery files, as well as the program files for adaware. I'm not sure if I should just delete these mostly because I don't recall protecting these with a password. Any positive response would be greatly appreciated.

A:Password Protected Files In Virus Scan?

The "recovery files" are probably your System Restore files, if you have System Restore enabled, but without a file path, I can't say for sure. These are protected files. If you're absolutely positive your system is clean, you can disable it (which will remove all previous Restore Points), reboot, then re-enable it and set a new Restore Point. If you try to use an old Restore Point, and it was created at the time you were infected, you will re-infect your system. What it's probably seeing from Ad-Aware, are the Quarantine files. You can remove these from inside Ad-Aware.Open Ad-Aware.Click the little Padlock icon, on the top, right. That will open the Quarantine Manager.Highlight the ones you want to delete, and click the Delete button at the bottom.I would leave at least, 2 weeks, of quarantined files. That way if you develop a problem, due to Ad-Aware removing something it shouldn't have, you can remove the file from Quarantine, by selecting it, and clicking the Restore button, at the bottom.
