Is there a file recovery software which preserves file names and directory structure?

Q: Is there a file recovery software which preserves file names and directory structure?

I'm trying to recover an entire terabyte, and I don't want a recovery software which will scrap filenames and file structures, leaving an unintelligible mess to wade through. Is there a software which will preserve file names and structures, and possibly allow me to restore only particular directories?

Preferred Solution: Is there a file recovery software which preserves file names and directory structure?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Is there a file recovery software which preserves file names and directory structure?

Hmm; Normally any backup software would do this for you.

If you had a secondary copy (say other media to which you did a copy), then this would be a snap.

It sounds as if you only have the original media and you need to recover "whatever is possible".

Hi all

I'm having a few problems following a couple of weeks of attacks whilst on the internet. My son experienced the same thing whilst on Facebook and my daughter too on another apparently harmless shopping site.

Basically we got a pop-up window preporting to be from Microsoft that suddenly launched and that looked like a virus checker as it had a box saying it had found all sorts of problems on the hard drives and that the world would end soon. This was followed by more pop-ups saying things like windows couldn't find the hard disc drive, memory was full etc. all quite scary to the uninitiated.

I promptly did nothing that might agrevate the situation and phoned one of the IT guys at work who said he had seen it a few times in the business and recommended a dose of Rkill and Combofix. This appeared to work sweetly and all was peaceful in the house hold until yesterday when it happened on my laptop once more. Feeling (inappropriately) confident following the previous episode I set about the usual process but this time was left with a completely black desktop and solitary IE shortcut plus the widgets.

I then tried to restore the system to previous point a few days earlier which appeared to work fine until I tried to open a fie when I discovered that Windows Explorer could not "see" the files and subdirectories. I believe the information is still there as if I click on Start/Computer it shows the two drives E and C to be full to what I remember as be... Read more

I have a directory structure

Where a file can exist in multiple directories. Now I need to update the file and it would be nice to just be able to copy the changed file to all of the directories that contains the same file (filename). It can be anywhere from 1 to a couple of 100 copies.

Is there a way in Windows 7?
Anyone knows of a tool that does this?

Hi I am Rupesh from India. I have examined a website and it contains of 50000 mp3 files of which I want to download 11000 files and I have downloaded 8000 mp3 files and I want to download upto 3000 mp3 files from the same website and discard the remaining files.

I have downloaded the files from net using offline browser called extreme picture founder. In that application it has an option called skip if the destination file exists. I am going to re download the files and select the option skip if the destination file exists. The above application has also has options for scanning the website and spidering etc., of which all options I have understood.

Previously after downloading files using offline browser I have copied the files to another directory and the directory structure was lost but have files in another directories.

As I want to download 11000 files which is of size 135 gb but I have downloaded 93 gb. If I can obtain the directory structure of website and the files with filenames only without any data in it I can maintain the directory structure same as website I mean I can keep file names and directory names same as website.

At present I have installed Windows 10 on my laptop. Hi Guys,

I've managed to get two directories with the same files in them but different versions, it's a total of over 300 files.

Some of the latest versions are in one directory but some of the latest versions are in the other.

If I try to copy the files from one to the other, windows will either overwrite or skip the files, not much help.

What I need to do is to only overwrite the file if the existing file is older.

I bet it's really simple, but I can't think how to do it.

Looking forward to hearing from you (please be gentle).

Hey all I have been trying to get all the file names of a directory copied into notepad, but i cannot get them to display without their extensions. I have been trying

dir /b

dir /b *.

dir /a-d *.

and similar commands but none seem to work. If anyone knows how to display all files in a directory with only the file name and no extension I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

NM all I figured it out. I used a program called dirprinter which is a shareware app found here

it can export a directory listing with only the file name.

Is there a way to correct the change of printed file color to blue? The changing started after updating a free word processor, at its website. After installing & using the program, my name files started turning blue.
Do Microsoft know the cause of this type of transformation?, It would help to cure it.

I had a HDD in an external enclosure. Something got messed up (I think it was disconnected by accident during a file transfer) and now when I plug it in, the drive is recognized in "My Computer" and disk management but it says that the drive is not formatted and asks me if I want to format it. I had data on it that wasn't backed up (Doh!) so I plugged it into one of my computers and tried a couple of recovery programs. I was able to recover most of my files but it seems the recovery programs can't get the original file names. (It names the files recoveredfile01.pdf, recoveredfile02.doc etc.) Since it would take me hours to rename every file I am trying to find a way to recover the names too. Anyone know of any programs/methods that would do this? Obviously the files are still there... I would assume the names are there somewhere also. For your information: I am running Windows XP Pro and the HDD was formatted in FAT32. Thanks for your help!

Hello everyone,

Firstly I would like to say that this seems like a swell enough forum as is and I am frankly out of ideas. About a year ago I had backed up a rather large series of files under one name for my roommate who was in the process of doing some "spring cleaning" on his computer. Fast forward to now and he is out of Hard-drive space damn near and has been unable to find the reserve file himself. Below is the directory under which I named and saved the around 200gb file of games and old-ROTC documents. Regardless the file needs to be found and even after un-hiding all files from the control panel, I have yet been able to locate it. It would seem to be simple enough, one would think that you could see the file name sitting above Program Files but it is not. Any one have any ideas, we would rather not have to reformat/ system restore if we can avoid it.

A:File path error/ Cannot find file directory/file itself

I used a software called TreeSize which shows the size of all folders on the disk. Thinking that the Windows OS is around 18gb, a 200gb files should really stick out with TreeSize.

I have a external my book fat32 formated and a new mybook ntfs formated external as well. Now when I copy my files from the fat32 to the ntfs external all files copy fine but some give that destination location file characters are too long, meaning that the file names are too long. Now I could change the file names but that would conflict with programs that need that file name. I am using vista ultimate and would like to copy all the files over from the fat32 to ntfs so I can reformat the fat32 to ntfs. The files got on the ntfs from a simple drag and drop from my IDE NTFS internal hard drive. I hope you guys to tell me what to do. Thank you :)

Hi All,

I've got a problem creating long named folders or files on a Linux network share.

I can see and log in to the share without any problems, but if I try to create a folder that is longer than 8 characters, I get the following error message:
The drive that this file or folder is stored on does not allow long file names, or names containing blanks or any of the following characters: \ / : , ; * ? < > |

Also, I can not see files on the share that have long names...

I only have this problem when I use my Windows 7 machine. XP and Ubuntu work just fine.

I am using Windows 7 Professional.

Ok I'm totally at a loss on how to word this so I'm just going to write it out the best that I can...

First I have a batch file that I'm writing that will convert mp4 files to mp3 files (I have a lot) for a buddies band using ffmpeg.

Here's the code that I'm using:

ffmpeg -i folder\video.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music.mp3"

what I would like to do is add to this so that I don't have to write out this code for every file I have... :/

I have the mp4 files in one folder and than the mp3 files are saving to another folder.

So here's an example of what the code will do if it isn't clear yet.

Folder 1:

what it should do is grab video1.mp4 and convert it.

ffmpeg -i folder\video1.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music1.mp3"

and than move onto the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video2.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music2.mp3"

and than the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video3.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music3.mp3"

It's going to have to grab the name from the mp4 file and insert it for the mp3 file.

I can get around pretty good in cmd if it's basic commands but when it comes to something like this I'm a little confused...

Thanks for the help in advance!
I'll see what i can do about searching some more on what I would have to do and if I find the solution I'll post it here if it isn't already answered.

A:Batch File that grabs file names from folder to insert into batch file

A DOS "for /f" loop should do the trick, although changing the filename extension for the output to do everything in one line escapes me at the moment.

Perhaps you could do a dir .\folder\*.mp4/s/b > mp4s.txt, then make a copy of that and edit each line to rename the file to the destination name, and save it as mp3s.txt. Then you just feed both the source (mp4s.txt) and destination (mp3s.txt) filesnames into the for /f loop which handles the ffmpeg conversion.

Quite a crude solution and you'd have to handpatch the destination filenames, but i can't think of how to get a source mp4 filename and then just change the extension.

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in: http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

Hi all,

Brief description on my predicament ...

Two days ago I shutdown my PC and everything was working fine. I then booted into Windows and tried to edit my web sites where Dreamweaver gave out an error which caused me to suddenly realise that one of my hard drives was not present. My Seagate 2TB which included all my music, my documents data.

I went into Disk Management and saw that the 2TB disk was present but it hadn't initiated. I rebooted into Windows with the same issue. I reloaded disk management. Selected the disk where I was prompted to initialise the disk. I selected its previous GPT setting. Upon it appearing in explorer all my files were gone.

Note: My Windows is working fine so I suspect a possible hard drive failure? I'm unsure because both SeaTools and WD Lifeguard pass on SMART. I haven't run the tests though. I checked the power connection and data cable and they are secure. The drive itself is running fine now which puzzles me.

I've currently got Easeus Data Recovery Pro running a deep scan in the background. I can see it is picking up all my files but from what I can see it isn't maintaining the folder structure and I really need this folder structure. I'm contacting their support about this also.

I have a 160 GB HD NTFS file system with 118 GB free space. My Documents and setting folder has 8.87 GB with 12,388 Files and 816 folders that are many layers deep.

The problem: Every so often my XP professional OS will not accept a new long file name (less than 50 characters and spaces) but will accept an 8 character (DOS) name.

What is wrong? Have I reached a limit because of the long file names? Or too many files in a single folder? Or?

I run into the same problem with by back-up Hard Drive which has a FAT32 file system.

The problem seems to go away, at least for a while, if I restart my Dell Dimension 9100 PC.

Thank you, Supportbob4
I have replicated my problem both for my NTFS drive and the FAT32 drive.

I also finally got an error message which tells me the problem:
The maximum character and space limit of 255 includes file name plus the names of all the stacked folders after My Dicuments! The whole file path!

It can be very confusing because I was able to make it more than 255 characters and spaces but all of sudden it reached a threshold where it will no longer work until I shortened the file name back to 255. Going between hard drives seemed to make it recover sometimes when I had a longer than 255 path but then all of a sudden it stopped working.

I need to keep my folder names shorter and be cautious on length of file names too when I have many stacked folders.

A:Long file names not accepted Short DOS names ok

From what I recall the WinXP limits it to 255 characters, filenames written command prompt are 253 characters, and those include the filename and extension.

Yesterday my computer froze, so I restarted but couldn't get Windows 10 to load. Dell service desk could not get it back up, so had to do OS Recovery via system restore. Could anyone please suggest the appropriate file recovery software for me? I have tried some applications which are not really doing the job properly.

I have a 250GB drive which use to be partitioned into 3 parts (~80GB each); now it has lost its original partitions, and only reads two partitions of ~128GB each.

I have not deleted any of my files or formatted the drive. They got turned into orphan files or something like that and they got lost, along with the original partitions.

So far, I have tried "Recover My Files", but it's recoverying files that use to belong to the drive's previous owner who formatted the drive. I don't care for those files. Also, the files are not recovered with their original names, and are recovered in small parts! i.e., 1 MP3 file of 30 Megs, will be recovered in tons of pieces of ~100 KB mp3 files!!

Can anyone suggest a more appropriate application that could fix/recover my original partitions, and my lost/orphaned files (which were not deleted) - AS they were named, and in their entirety??

I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

I want to periodically make a backup list of all files and directories on my two hard drives and save them to a text file.

I attempted to do this via this command line entry:

dir /b "C:\My Path" > myFiles.txt
And just FYI to everyone, that will not work without CMD.exe being run as an administrator.

But the problem is that the file list will only save for the files in that ONE directory. If you use "C:" in place of "C:\My Path" it just saves a list of files in the root directory only.

I want a log of the ENTIRE hard drive, and then also another hard drive, too
If there is a software that does this reliably, that would be fine, but if anyone is knowledgeable about how
to do it from the command line, then that would be great too.

Thanks for the help

I was wondering if there is such a thing.

I have downloaded a handfull and each will find the files but I need to pay anything from $25 to $99 for the workable product.

I formatted the hard drive that had my backups on and had not bothered to copy over a not very important folder with some word files.

It would be nice to get them back but its not the end of the world.

Has anyone come across something,

Even something like spybot where you can donate a little.

days ago I deleted Kazaa along with the many files in "My shared files".
I asked around for ways to find my music and video files I had in My shared files, and figured out that I need a 3rd party file recovery software, in order to find the music and video files. If anybody had the same problem, or even not, could you give me advice for which recovery software I should use? Please help me.

A:PC Inspector File Recovery software problem

The files, although recovered, are most likely corrupted. Corruption doesn't alter the file-size but renders them unusable. There's nothing you can do to make them good again.

Hi there
So.. yesterday my ASUS laptop crashed for no reason and everytime I turn it on again it would bring me to an ASUS preload wizzard screen. So I had no choice but to go through this system restore (probably some malware caused this). I managed to save my D:/ drive but C:/ got completely wiped out and the laptop is back to factory settings. The laptop seens to be working fine but I lost all my personal files including photos, videos, musics, business files, etc. I tried Asoftech but it didnt help much. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Thank you

Here's a list of free data recovery programs: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm

Try a couple and see if they can get something back. Chances of getting everything back are zero. Once you run a recovery on a system it overwrites files on the drive and makes getting back those overwritten files impossible, your only hope is that the files you want have not been overwritten yet by new files. This means you should use the system as little as possible until data recovery.

Also, you seem to have run System Recovery not System Restore which is a Windows features that onyl restores the system to a previous date rather then to the original factory state.

Also, in the future if this happens you should not run the factory recovery until you recover the data or have someone recover the data from the non-booting system.

Additionally the tech world says this all the time but you MUST have backups of data you don't want to lose. If you don't bother to make backups then you will lose it.
