Computer Starts And Goes To Boot Screen But Wont Start Up

Q: Computer Starts And Goes To Boot Screen But Wont Start Up

last night my computer froze and i had to shut it down holding the power button. since then when i have tried to turn it on, it first looks like its gonna load, but then goes to the screen w/ the 3 safe mode options to start in, and to start in windows normally. the arrow keys will not work for me, so i cant get to safe mode and dont know how. after it waits for 30 seconds, it will start in normal mode, and go the the screen where it looks like its gonna load, the "Windows XP Professional" screen, where there is the time bar thing (not sure what thats called). once it is there, the screen will turn black and then restart and go back to the startup page w/ the safe mode options and normal mode option. rinse and repeat. i dont know what to do and any help will be appreciated. thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

No matter what option i pick in the safe mode list, the computer will not start. when i choose any of the safe modes, (safe mode, safe mode with networking etc) the computer displays a list of random commands (i dont understand any of it) and then restarts. If I try to Start Windows Normally, or use last settings that worked, it seems to start loading, and then restarts.

Any ideas?

If this is the wrong forum, where does this go???
Last week I started up my computer and right before the logon screen was supposed to show up, it just restarted. (I guess it was a blue screen?) It told me that Windows failed to start the last time and it asked me if I wanted to use Startup Repair. Since I had nothing to lose, I just went ahead. So then it kept saying "Your computer was unable to start" and it asked me if I wanted to do system restore, but I thought that would be useless, as half of the time System Restore in Windows Recovery Environment doesn't work for me!!1 It really wasn't doing anything, so I just went ahead and turned the computer off. So when I started it up, instead of Starting Windows, I see the Windows Vista boot screen. Oddly enough, it's faster than the normal boot screen. Now, before anyone asks me if anything related to Vista is on my computer, the answer to that question is no. All I really want to know is how to restore it back to the Windows 7 boot screen. I tried bcdedit /set {current} locale en-US, but that didn't work. I would have tried bcdboot %WinDir% /l en-US, but I didn't want to run into any problems.

Are there any other ways to fix this? Not that it's a problem or anything, it just looks... wrong.

Thank you in advance for any answers.

If you ask if I'm able to start my computer now, the answer to that is yes.

#1 Hi, basically this probem arose from nowhere. I came back from holiday 6 days ago and my pc took longer than i remember to boot. Only till i realised the next day and day after it was getting longer and some times not loading past the 'Windows' screen. Each time when it hasn't loaded fully, I turn it off and re-boot pressing F8 to get up safe mode, which doesn't work at all.
It gets stuck on '/avgdiseh' doesn't load past and will stay like that till turned off. Start up repair does absolutely nothing, it asks to do System restore which then errors and reboots, if i press cancel it stays on the 'Scanning' screen for hours.. (8 hours today)

#2 I've now seemed to run into another problem trying to boot from my CD drive. First time I loaded everything correctly got to 'install windows' screen clicked start up repair which did nothing. Ever since that windows won't detect my CD drive even though it opens and did read CD's.(watched a film on it the other day)

I've looked online and other people have had the same problems and clearly i haven't found a solution yet. I've tried cleaning the inside of my case, double checking connections, changing boot options. From what i've read its either a failed HDD, failed RAM (, or failed CD drive in the case of my second dilemma)

I'm just curious as to whether anyone can pin point what the problem is. If its an easy fix or whether it is possibl... Read more

Hi
This morning I had to insert a graphics PCIx16 graphics card on my Gigabyte motherboard. I wanted to see if the monitor would show picture and it did. The computer booted and posted just fine. I've had this computer for a year. So I put the case back on my computer and hooked everything up, including the peripherels. But when I turn on the power button nothing happens. The fan doesnt start, there's no beep, nothing happens. I don't know what happened, I suspect my mobo may have something to do with this? My power cord works just fine since It worked this morning.

Any ways to fix this? Thanks

p.s. while i was working in the case there was a loose screw making noise in the case.

I have I an older Y410P laptop that probably should be replaced but that's not the issue here. I can't get it to start up all the way. I'll power it on and it'll go to the Lenovo screen and then pass it and go to a black screen with a circle indicating it's loading (or booting up). After that it just stays spinning and won't ever go to the login page. I can get to boot menu by pushing the Lenovo button but don't know what to do in there. Some instruction would be great, I'm not sure what happened to make it not start up but I don't know how to fix it. Thanks in advance! I greatly appreciate it!

Hi,

Over the past few weeks, when i went to turn on my PC it would start for anywhere in between 1 and 4 seconds and then completely turn off. After a few tries though, it would stay on. But today, after many tries it doesn't stay on.

When i start it, all fans, lights, drives turn on/light up then 1-5 seconds later everything just turns off completley. It doesnt even get to the point where it makes that beep sound. I thought it might be my power supply, but i bought a brand new one only a few months ago. i've tried reseating the RAM, cleaning the motherboard area, re-connecting wires/cables but nothing is fixing it.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Hello, I am having major problems with my Computer.
A while ago, in the middle of 3d gaming my computer locked up and the monitor went to standby mode. When I turned comp off and back on, the screen was blank..
All the devices were still working (Hard drive, fans, dvd-drive all still spinning) but the screen was blank... no boot screen or beep... I tried unplugging all the devices one by one then rebooting, and got down to the motherboard and the processor and still nothing at start-up (I also tried an alternate monitor and got same result)...
So i bought a new motherboard and power supply and im still getting the same problem.. i really hope my processor isnt burnt out :(
Im not too familiar with installing motherboards so i didnt mess with the jumper settings... but im getting the same problem that i had with my old MB and its default jumper settings....

Any suggestions?

first try clearning the cmos on the motherboard jumper and see if that helps fix the problem, refer to the asus manual for the cmos jumper location. then boot the computer up and see if you get any post.

if not, then boot with only the bare essentials which are only the power supply, motherboard, cpu, ram, and videocard. take out all of the comp parts outside the computer case and only reseat the devices ive listed above and then see if you can get the computer to post.

1st one is when I turn my computer on the light on the pc is on and u can here it running but its not doing anything. I then turn it off manually and try again, it takes several times doing this to get it to finally come on. Also when u go to restart the computer it wont restart correctly it does the same thing as when I turn it on. This does not happen everytime I turn the computer on just most of the time.

2nd is my computer wont allow me to select any wallpaper except colors. I cant even click on anything in the list. Its grayed out.

3rd is at times the monitor flashes greenish blue color. I know its not the monitor b/c i haved hooked another one up to the pc and it does the exact same thing. There are times when it stays the color for hours and other times it just flashes fast and then corrects.

I need help, if anyone could give me some ideas!

Hello and welcome to TSF...
First, you need to provide us with full system specifications because I do think it has something with your hardware components...

Open up one side of the case and check if it is dusted from inside...
If it is, blow the dust with compressed air...
Check the capacitors on Motherboard if the are leaking or if they are popped up...
This powering and restarting issue could be dying Motherboard...

Also, take out graphic card and clean the contacts with rubber eraser and VGA slot with brush...
Take out RAM and clean the contacts with rubber eraser and DIMM slots with brush...

If you PSU is dusted, blow the dust with compressed air...

When your monitor flashes greenish blue colors, this indicators tell us the issue might be corrupted video drivers or dying video card...
Reinstall graphic card driver, and if this does not help, try with different graphic card...
Hope this will help you mate...

Keep us posted...

Hello there,

It seems like you did not perform a clean installation of Windows and that's why your system is acting up.

Follow the steps below to install a new copy of Windows:

1. To format your hard disk during Windows 7 installation you will need to start or boot your computer using the Windows 7 installation disc or USB flash drive. Insert your Windows 7 disc in your CD/DVD drive. Please note: will need to restart or turn on your system with the disc in the drive.
2. After turning on your system with the CD in the drive go ahead and press any key when prompted during your computer post routine and then follow the instructions presented on screen. If you don’t see this go back to step 1 to setup your BIOS to boot from CD or USB flash drive depending on your installation media.
3. On the Install Windows page simply enter your preferences and click next.

4. Accept the Windows license agreement.

5. On the “Which type of installation do you want” page go ahead and choose the “Custom” option.

6. Select Drive options (advanced) on the “Where do you want to install Windows” page.

7.  Select the partition that you want to change, choose the formatting option you want to perform and then follow the instructions.
When allocating space choosing the default MB size for your drive is typically the best for most users since you want to take full advantage of all your disk... Read more

A:Computer wont start, Blue screen STOP:0x0000007B

FWIW: 7B errors often occur when users have tried to either clean install or repair install Windows, IMO. So the error in itself is not necessarily significant. Some details about what occurred with the system before the cry for help by your son...would be of greater benefit than focusing on that error message, IMO.You might gain by reading STOP 7B Errors .You might also take a look at 7B, left column at http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.htm , to see the complexity involved in trying to determine cause of that particular error.Louis

Hello everyone and happy holidays. Thank you for taking the time to read through the description of my problem and try to help me.

My computer was working fine a couple days ago and all of a sudden got a terrible Trojan that would spam me with random IE ads. So I ran ad-aware and it got rid of the problem. I went to bed relieved but woke up to my computer in a black screen with just a single cursor "_" flashing. I figured it was a fluke and restarted. same problem.

So I decided to open up the computer and check the SATA drive connections. Everything looked fine but the problem still persisted. I decided that it could just be slot number 1 and moved it to slot 3. The computer would start up and go to desktop but all of my icons disappeared and the computer would just hang if I tried to open any file or go on the internet or any program.

Obviously, it was because the SATA drive was now in a new slot?? I'm not sure. But I put it back into slot 1 and went into the BIOS setup and sure enough, it was a "not detected" for slot 1. The main HDslot.

I tried to reset the BIOS using the jumper method and it still just hangs on black screen with cursor "_" flashing...

Any help or ideas in this problem would be greatly appreciated.

A:Computer Wont Load up frozen start up screen RAM problem

Hi sorry you seem to have a poor impression of techs lets hope we can help you and possibly change that, 2 things come to mind, the slot is bad ie damaged in some way or the ram is,when you tested the ram in the slot did you try only 1 stick, try 1 of the others in it if it works ok then it is the ram that is the problem,if not then it is the slot, you can run with 1 less stick of ram, also check that the ram all matches as this would throw up a similar problem

F2 has nothing there for it to work
and
F5 brings me to a blackscreen or blackscreen with writing on it but freezes after I choose what mode I want to load up.

I was going to install vista on her laptop but her disktray doesnt work.

Is there anyway to fix this? Is it possible that I can install my windows vista on a flashdrive and install that on her computer?

My computer wont boot up. When I try to start it, I always get the blue screen of death. It does this whether I let it start normally, in safe mode, with the last known good settings or whatever. I also tried booting from the XP CD-Rom, but that had the same results. The error message on the blue screen I am getting says Page_Fault_in_Nonpaged_area and that the problems seems to be caused by NDIS.sys. Under technical info, it says my stop code is 0x00000050 (0x87000000, 0x00000000, 0xF722C9BD, 0x00000000). It also says NDIS.sys - Address F722C9BD base at F722C000, datestamp 4b72911a. Ive look around at a few web sites, and they said to check the RAM (physically) and it looks ok to me. I can get into the F2 and F12 screens when the computer first powers up, and the F2 screen recognizes my RAM, so I guess thats ok. I think the problem is software related though. THe last time it was working, I turned off the power switch because it looked like I was getting attacked by viruses (lots of popup, my programs running slower, stuff like that and I think my computer was reporting it had trapped a few trojans that were trying cause problems). I would have liked to go in and use system restore, but I cant even get to the point where that's an option (in WIndows - is there another way?) What should I do, how do I fix this? I have XP, Service Pack 2 or higher (not sure). Thanks!

What did you do when you checked the RAM? You need to unclip and remove the RAM chips and then reinsert them, making sure they lock into place. Give them a little rocking movement to make sure they are properly seated. If that doesn't solve the problem then it MAY be a corrupt XP file. In that case boot from your XP CD and do a repair install.

Hi Guys,
I have what I perceive to be a big problem with my pc. I somehow deleted the necessary files to boot the computer. I have tried to boot in safe mode, but when I get to the screen to boot in safe mode and hit enter to boot it goes back to the gateway screen. Can anyone help? Please.
thanks
Tricia

Like the title says, my computer is stuck on a black screen. I downloaded an update and was instructed to restart the computer. After restarting the computer it went to a black screen. It won't do anything past that. I've tried starting it in safe mode but always with the same result. I have no idea what to do with this short of taking it to Best Buy to have the geek squad take a look at it and frankly I don't feel like doing that. If anyone knows how to fix this or has any suggestions, I'm open to anything. Please help.

Have you tried selecting Last Known Good Configuration from the Safe Mode menu? It sometimes works. Also, if you put in your W7 DVD and select Repair rather than Install after making the language choice, StartUp repair might help and if it does not, try System Restore.

the problem is when i boot up the computer, the busy light is constantly on and it will not show anything on the screen. i changed monitors and the same thing occurred, something is not allowing my computer to boot, maybe a virus, but how do i do a virus scan when the computer wont boot? i changed hard drives and the same thing occurred. i am sure that the problem is not monitor related but something else. all the wires and cords are connected and nothing seems obviously wrong. i put in a boot disk but it wont recognize it. any help would be great, if you guys need more information just ask, thanks

Ive got this old computer thats been working ok for years. i went out for a hour, and when i come back, its got the windows 2000 version of a bsod. its not the first time ive seen this screen, so i rebooted the computer. but when the motherboard's boot screen came up, i heard a click-whirr-beep sound eminate from the box. it sounds like it comes from the hard drive, im not sure though.
it then shows "f1 to retry boot f2 to setup" or something like that. f1 doesnt work, just reprints the same thing; f2 takes me to the bios.
any help would be appreciated.

oh, system specs: windows 2000 pro (i forget which service pack i last updated it to), p4 1.5ghz, 256 meg ram, geforce4 ti4200 64 meg video card, soundblaster live! value. its an old dell computer.

I have a dell pc with windows 7. The computer loads the dell logo, the screen is black with the blinking line in the corner. I have tried all solutions that I have come across, the fixboot, replacing config files and last resort, I did a fresh install of windows. After the fresh install of windows, it worked for a few days and now it is doing it again. What is my next option?

Hello Nicole and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you've already done a reinstall of Windows 7 and the problem has returned, I think I'd start looking at hardware issues. Perhaps a hard drive, RAM, motherboard, etc that's failing. One of the Forum experts has prepared a couple of troubleshooting guides that might help isolate the problem. I might start with the Memtest86 and HD Diagnostics test outlined in Steps 8 and 9, first tutorial.

I have WinXP Pro
I was online , surfing,, doing normal activities..veiwing webpages.

and the whole screen froze, when I tried CTRL+ALT+DELETE
to access task manager, nothign came up, and then..
THE BLUE SCREEN.
it said something about a kernel error and a memory dump.
I turned it off (at the power bar, my computer has no on/off switch)
Then when it restarted, it loaded up Windows, and I deleted everything I had recently downloaded and/or installed, including a couple small DOS games (arkanoid and another) that i got from GameHippo.com , and one MP3 I had just gotten off some new band's website...

then i tried to defragment, and about 45 seconds into it,...
THE BLUE SCREEN.
and now I cant get it to load windows, and my CD drives not working, so I cant put XP boot dsic in..and dont have any boot disk on floppy.

It keeps saying drive not ready.

Im posting this from a friends computer, cuz I cant get mine to do anything, I hit f1 and loaded the setup defaults, no help..

what to do?? help?? ;(

I cant figure this out, my computer starts up but my monitor wont come on. I have had this problem now 3 times in 2 years. I've replaced motherboard, memory, power supplies, and changed video cards. I currently have a k-7 fsb 400 motherboard with amd sempron processor, 350 watt power supply, geforce 5200 ddr 64mb graphics card, kingston 512 ddr memory, wd cavier 7200rpm hard drive, and a dell monitor. everything starts on computer but monitor wont. yet monitor does on my friends computers. i've reseated the memory twice, tried differant hard drive, tried differant video card and power supply. still nothing. It must be the motherboard right? I just bought motherboard 4 months ago.

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.

So I turn my computer off one day only to find it wont start the next day. I open the case up and see the led is on. I flip the switch on the power supply off then on and quickly press the power button. My computer starts but the following time I shut down the computer it again wont start and now the led is blinking. I've never had any issues like this before, any help would be appreciated.

I don't routinely use many usb devices, only my mouse and keyboard and every now and then my ipod. I figure the issue is likely either the power supply or the motherboard. The ps is almost two years old while the motherboard is only about three months old.

A:Computer wont start, power supply wont start, blinking led

It sounds to me like your PSU is the problem, get a hold of another and plug it to your computer and see if that will make it start, if it doesn't it might be BOTH your motherboard and PSU. A bad PSU will burn a motherboard.

Hi,

My PC cuts out at every time I turn it on? When it restarts I get 5 options but whatever one I select it just restarts itself and comes back to the same screen??

Anyone got any ideas to how I can fix this??

Thanks A quick reply would be great

A:PC starts at start up screen?

I think this happened to me a while back. Does the computer just restart while booting up? Does safe mode boot up the cursor and nothing else? If so, your hard drive may have died. I would call that a good situation (kinda) becuase it wasn't the processor or motherboard (I don't think).

My grandpa has a laptop with windows 8.1 on it. He recently fell for a phone scam where some guy tricked him into letting him take control of his computer and pay him hundreds of dollars for security software that doesn't work. All we know is that they turned
off his firewall and added some kind of virus/malware that was alerting him every time he opened up a web browser. Luckily I came for a visit in time to take a look and I ran a few different programs to put things back together the best that I know how. First
I set a recovery point just in case, then I ran CCleaner, taking some bloat off, as well as some programs we were sure he didn't install, nor were used recently. I ran a Herd-protect scan and took a bunch of things off with that and then I used Panda Internet
Security to scan once more before I went to bed. It was working really well before I ran that last scan so I figured I was accomplishing something.
Now to the real problem, which is that now the computer wont boot properly. Specifically. I turn it on. and I get the spinning lights/loading screen for a minute. then a black screen with a mouse on it. The mouse moves fine and it looks just like it does
before it opens the log in screen.
I tried to open Safe Mode but I guess Windows 8 doesn't always respond to F8 while booting? I can't use ctrl+alt+del at any point and it doesn't go into Automatic Repair Mode either. I've been looking at other people's questions and found two that
