Turn an old Win98 laptop into a NetBook for pre-teen child?

Q: Turn an old Win98 laptop into a NetBook for pre-teen child?

I have a couple of older Dell laptops here of the Windows 98 vintage. They have more than ample hard disks and 64 megs of RAM. I'm thinking of turning them into NetBooks for a couple of 10- and 12-year-olds. The laptops both have good batteries USB ports and PCMCIA slots so wireless will be an easy task.

Here's the question: How practical a job is this and what OS would be best?

I know just a very little about NetBooks, mostly what I've learned by looking at them on the store shelves.

Preferred Solution: Turn an old Win98 laptop into a NetBook for pre-teen child?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It's actually over his budget... until his next paycheck, at which point it'll wipe out his savings account.
So before he blows everything he's earned this summer taking orders at a fast-food joint, thought I'd ask if this will be a great choice. It's a Lenovo Y50 laptop sold on Amazon. He looked at it in a Best Buy store where it costs nearly a hundred dollars more. He's a junior in high school this year, so use will be for any school related study/research rolleyes, facebook, Minecraft and he wants to get Skyrim/Elder Scrolls downloaded once he makes his purchase. I think the salesman said that this could be linked to his PS4 - I'm not a techie at all so I don't know that this is hugely important but my son seemed impressed.

I've read reviews dissing the screen. But we saw it in store and didn't think it looked as... unpleasant as some reviewers thought. The other negative thing I've read is something about having to press two keys on the keyboard to control the sound. Again, I don't think that that sounds like a big deal either.

I guess I'm wondering if there's something better for his money or is this actually dang good for $1250 plus tax from Best Buy? (I know Amazon's price is cheaper but hesitate to have to handle any troubles we ... Read more

Hi, everyone. I am abt to get either a laptop or a netbook as a grad gift. The netbook seems the best - this young lady will be doing net surfing, playing music, some word processing, but no gaming, not much more: no protein folding or anything.

We totally have our home computer for any video editing, powerpoint, etc. she might need to do. If she needs a lot of computer for college, I can slap together a desktop for a few hundred.

So, if I go netbook versus laptop, what will I lose? 1. A cd/dvd plater. I figured that out - can I use the netbook USB port to run and external DVD player, or is there not even drivers and such for this?

Besides no DVD player, what else would we not-have, versus laptop?

A:What does a netbook lack? Graduation gift: netbook or laptop

It will have smaller screen to start with, lot less computing power, poorer graphics, less storage to name few. Although, keeping in view the usage I think a netbook seems very reasonable, as there is no gaming or any intensive computing tasks are involved.

You can run a DVD drive via USB of a netbook.

You may have a look at Asus 1005E, i think its a decent solution.

Hello my daughter is interested in taking Scratch Programming. Someone recommended I get her the HP Stream. Is this laptop going to be ok for programming and simple tasks such as writing papers and Duolingo? She's only 9 so not mature enough for something real expensive, but she does have a need for it at school. Any suggestions would be great. Oh she also can't see very well so a lit keyboard and nice screen lighting is important. Thanks!

PCG-4T1L, Sony Vaio Netbook

Hey guys,

I'm trying to fix a friend's laptop to help him out (and also so I learn more about hardware repair). It's the model mentioned above. He says he left it by the window one night while it was raining and when they tried to turn it on, it wouldn't turn on.

I just took it apart (it's been a while since then). I removed EVERYTHING except the motherboard (hard drive, memory, keyboard, plastic pieces, etc) in hopes that maybe reconnecting something or whatever would get it to work. Well, it didn't.

I can't find the motherboard for this online anywhere. Any other ideas of what I could do? I also took out the battery and held the switch for 30 seconds and tried to switch it on and off 10-20 times.

No luck =/

If we don't fix it, it's not the end of the world. But if we can that would be great (since it's his daughters). Thanks

I have a Samsung NC20 12" netbook that is about 2.5 years old.

Recently it has stopped turning on. I press the power button and the LED lights on the unit come on and it makes a noise as if something is happening but the screen never comes on and the hard drive light doesn't flash. I then turn it off

Eventually after many tries it will start but there doesn't seem to be a pattern as to what causes it to finally turn on

Sometimes it can be out of action for days while I keep trying it.

When it is on it seems to be working fine as long as I don't turn it off or put it to sleep.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

My next door neighbour just gave me his laptop to have a look at, an HP Pavillion DV6000, which his baby has managed to 're-adjust'
Apparently his baby was bashing away on the keyboard and now when it is switched on all keyboard lights come on, the laptop makes 3 very loud and intrusive beeps (beeeeep....beep.beep) and the screen is completely dead, no flickers, no nothing.

Any idea what the problem could be and how to resolve it?

Hello,

I tried searching this and found people with similar problems, but no clear solution. My netbook screen stopped working over the weekend. I'm actually writing this right now on the netbook connected to an external monitor. It came with Windows XP but I upgraded to Windows 7 a few months ago (whenever the RC trial version ran out.)

I don't think I did any Windows Updates or software installs prior to this problem (possibly microsoft security essentials update.) The screen appears to be lighting, but completely black. I checked in the device manager and it claims the generic plug and play monitor that represents the built in screen is operating just fine. I've used the function keys to try to disable and enable the screen, and while connected to the external monitor I've changed resolutions, as well as the behavior between the screens (duplicate, extend, etc) all to no avail. I'm pretty stumped here as to how this happened or what can be done.

A:win98 laptop help

A few things.. has the card worked in the past?

What exactly are you trying to achieve with the network setup disk? Internet Connection Sharing?

Check the drivers for the card, and the associated software that usually comes with it- manufacturers annoyingly insist on forcing that on you.

Also, right click on network neighborhood, goto properties. In the popup window, remove all protocols that you see there (TCP/IP, IPX/SPX are the most common..) Reboot. Then rerun the network setup disk.

Can you tell us what type of card you're using? And can you see other computers in the network neighborhood?

I have an almost 13 year old granddaughter that is very good with logic puzzles and loves the computer and stated an interest in learning how to program games.
While I know my way around the PC, I've never done much in the line of programming. I am considering on buying her for Christmas a beginners guide to C++. My thinking is if she's going to learn she might as well gain some real life experience she can use as opposed to getting her a book on basic or something like that.
My question is two fold to you programmers. Is C++ going to be too difficult for a kid her age? And secondly any other recommendations for a simple C++ book or other suggestions if I'm not on the right path thinking about C++. I did find the MS visual C++ compiler that I downloaded for her and a beginners video from the MS website to supplement the book.
Any help will really be a appreciated.

I Have a WinFast 3D S900 video card, and I can't get it to work properly since I upgraded my OS from Win98 to Win98 SE.
I already tried to update the BIOS and the drivers from the internet and nothing worked.
Now the resolution of my screen is only 600X800 and it shows only 16 colors.
Whenever I try to change the resolution or the colors, it tells me that the addapter is incorrect or my hardware does not support my settings.
What can I do?

A:My video card is not working properly since I upgraded my OS from win98 to win98 SE

Have you tried removing the adapter from the control panel, restarting and allowing windows to find it again?

Also, take a look at what is showing up under monitor.

I have a WinXP desktop with a Netgear router that is connected to a cable modem.
Also have a Win98 laptop with a Netgear PC card.

The Win98 laptop connects to the internet without problems.
The Win98 laptop can ping the WinXp desktop. The Winxp Desktop can ping the Win98 laptop.
The problem: I cannot get the Win98 laptop see the Winxp machine at all in network neighborhood (workgroup names are the same).
Any ideas?

A:Win98 laptop doesnt see the network

First check to be sure that DHCP is configured on both PC's, next check the 98 and XP machine to make sure that the firewall software isn't causing the problem (if there is one installed on the 98 PC), it will block others from getting to the computer in the default mode.
Check to see if the workgroup you have named shows up on the XP computer, or try opening up the local computers on XP computer and see if anything shows up.

Hi,

I am running Win98 1st Ed., on my laptop. I had a problem previously with a Plug and Play Webcam. I plugged in the Cam and everything ran fine. The next time I could not access the web. I had to reformat the disk and re-install all the software (only half re-installed).

Now I would like to test the USB port. I tried to load other software and got a USB warning (possibly Host or Controler). I would like to know where or how, I can test the USB port and update the Win98 1st Ed. software and or divers?

I know it is included in Win98 SE, but also read that other than the Firewire, USB and ICS upgrades. It's not worth the cost of the software.

Any help in locating downloads and testing proceedures would be welcome.

Thanks

Hello, folks.
My teen can't get enough of MySpace, YouTube and associated activities. The more she uses them, the more I have to keep cleaning out Virtumonde, Smitfraude, etc. malware that keep repeatingly placed on my PC. I'm tired of the junk! How can she keep using her favorite sites without junking up the PC with malware? I am running Win XP, antivirus is Panda Internet Security (which I love 10x better than Norton or McAfee) plus I also clean out with Spybot often (probably need to do this more often). What guidelines can I give my teen to help prevent malware? She also IM's a lot, and I'm gonna tell her about not clicking on IM links.
Frustrated Mom

A:Keep Getting Reinfected When My Teen Uses Myspace

Do you use the Firefox browser? That will definitely help. You're more likely to get infected on myspace using Internet Explorer.

Spybot is pretty ineffective these days. It was decent several years ago, but now I'd recommend Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware.

Hello,
I hope you can help me.
My daughter is experiencing problems with her Windows ME machine. I've cleaned off what I could with Spybot and Adaware. I've also run Norton 2002 and the Micro trend on-line virus scan (although I'm not confident that the on-line scan made it to completion).

I'm seeing alot of modem activity, even when nothing else is running on her PC. She's getting icons on her desktop, pop-ups and spyware. Her machine is running very slowly and locks up on a regular basis.

I've run hijackthis and Hijackthis analyzer. The analyzer log is posted below:

Toshiba 1.8Ghz laptop
4 GB RAM (recent upgrade to memory 2x1GB, machine only sees 3GB, I can't find the cause, any advice most welcome)
160 GB HDD
Windows XP Media Center sp3

I recently 'cleaned' this computer and upgraded the memory. I left it with Eset running and it seemed fine until a 14 yr old nephew spent one session on it. When I heard about it, the browser was hanging without connecting. System control soon degraded to the point where Windows loads but that is it. Task mgr, file explorer, start button, browser... nothing works. Disk activity is evident but 'it' will not release the machine even after sitting off the ethernet wire for a substantial time after loading the OS. Safe mode available but 'it' blocks the run of Malwarebytes (though the app will load into memory). The only scans I could run were from within safe mode. not sure how useful that may be but RSIT outputs attached. I have DDS scan from safe mode I will place under separate post.

Best advice about next step please. Thank you for taking this under advisement.

Hello everyone reading this post,

I am a young adult trying to expand his knowledge on computers and everything to do with them. Through the course of the last 2 years I have built 2 desktop computers and fiddled around with them and what not. Since I feel I have the majority concept of what the inside of how a desktop works and how it's built, I would like to build a netbook/laptop. My current trouble is that I cannot find anywhere that sells netbook/laptop parts other then the hard drive and RAM. I cannot even find a tutorial (or enough tutorials) to get me going in the direction that I would like. If any of you would like to help me out I would sure appreciate it.

How can I fix broken keyboard? - sorry I forgot to add keyboard to the title so it may not be specific enough.

So one of my friends gave me a laptop but the keyboard keys are broken and virtually unusable without an external keyboard. I have a Windows 7 Disk and an SSD and the laptop has a Serial Sticker on so will use that, and might bump the RAM up as it is extremely easy to open.

However how will I be able to install a replacement keyboard and where can I get one from?

This is the laptop - Kikatek.com | (WS142EA#ABU) HP Mini 110-3000sa Ultra Mobile Notebook PC Atom (N450) 1.66GHz 1024MB 160GB 10.1 inch WSVGA LED Anti-Glare WLAN BT Webcam Windows 7 Starter 32-bit Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 (Black)

Some keys also don't actually type a letter.

A:Fix Broken Netbook/Laptop.

If you dare you can open the back and top panels if the notebook and the keyboard is connected to the mobo via a ribbon cable. Check this cable and if needed a new replacement keyboard can be ordered through HP but the cost of this exercise may well be prohibitive. I would hope that possibly the ribbon cable just needs to be reconnected that somehow it slipped away from it connections!
Something like this.......by the way I did this very thing to get to the cmos battery on my Gateway laptop. Several places where you pry the plastic back gets nerve racking but if you are determined and careful it all comes apart and snaps back together again....good luck !

He forgets the retention clip, white plastic but it's all good if it slides back in and stays.

If you use your laptop or netbook at your desk and never moved it? Do you use wired or wireless connection? Along with AC or DC? I find it strange if you have these systems and connected by AC all day long but never use the system outside your office thus do you connect wired or wireless. If so why do you do it that way? The docking station usually wired connection most connect that way. But if you're at home and run the AC power cord why not run the Ethernet Cable along with it?

Hi

We are looking to purchase a pc for our 12yo son about to start hscool next year (and so he doesn't hog the main laptop).

mainly want to keep price down as he will likely be supplied a netbook in year9 (2 years away).

he will general surf, watch youtube, use powerpoint, publisher and word for homework and maybe play the odd game if hardware permits.

I know small screen size and lack of optical drive but any experience between the two and advice appreciated...especially when it comes to day to day peformance issues.

A:netbook vs notebook vs laptop

Hi,
My son's in (UK) Yr 8 and uses a laptop for similar tasks. The screen (15 in) is much better for visualising powerpoint and publisher than a netbook screen.
Having CD/DVD drive is good when he wants to watch DVDs.
Having several USB ports is good when he syncs homework to USB plus uses USB mouse.
I think full size screens are better for eyesight too.

I'd go for a good spec laptop rather than netbook/notebook.I think a good graphics spec and good amount of RAM is more important than hard drive capacity - kid's will really have to do a lot of homework to fill 160gb to 250gb hard drive!!!
I can't advise on prices 'cos I work in not $$ of course!
Some schools have excellent discount on Microsoft products too through reputable suppliers using the child's school email addr as verification of eligibility.

Hope this helps?

Richard

I am trying to install a Netgear MA521 wireless card on my son's Toshiba 330 laptop. this is an 11b card. I had previously installed the thing on this machine and it worked well enough to connect to my router, though he was running W2K on it without sufficient hardware ( 32MB won't get it ). So I re-installed Win98 on the machine, and haven't been able to get it working again. I have tried resetting the bios settings for the controller, reinstalled the driver several times, even re-installed the OS, to no avail. In the device manager, says Windows could not install the driver, (code 2). Consistent message through all my labors. I have ruled out card and router problems, I get the same result with my Netgear 11g card, and both work fine on my Dell. Can anyone help?

Yes, if you buy a USB enclosure and install the drive there, you will be able to access it. Whether or not the Applications will work or not is another story, and will be on a case by case basis!

"General" data files, images, text, etc, should not be a problem.

Okay people, I require some help.

I've got a netbook, the screen is nackered.
I've got a laptop, the laptop is nackered but the screen is fine.

I'm wondering if there is any way I can remove the screen from the netbook, and remove the screen from the laptop and hook the netbook base to the laptop screen.

As in, have the netbook base removed from the screen and connect that to the laptop screen.
It doesn't necessarily have to be pretty, I'm sure I can do this by just connecting the correct wires, but I thought I'd get some experienced advice before attempting this.

Thanks in advance

Have one laptop running Windows 7 Build 7100.
And a netbook also running Windows 7 Build 7100.

On the laptop I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
On the netbook I am running Avira anti-virus (although this problem existed when there was no anti-virus program installed).

I created a homegroup on the laptop and shared all folders.
I then joined this homegroup from the netbook (and shared all folders there too).
So under homegroup on either machine, I now see the other computer's name.

If I click on that name it brings up the libraries- documents, music, pictures, videos.
But if I click on any of them, nothing happens. If I right click, then properties it says 'the properties for this item are not available'.

Something seems to be preventing the machines from sharing these files properly.
I have tried looking in Kaspersky but can't see what might be 'untrusted' that I should mark 'trusted'.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

01steven; Each computer may require the same name (and password) user account. Then look through your advanced sharing settings in the Network and sharing center and see if they are the same in both computers. Then try some different settings and see if that helps?

About your question, I don't think you can make it run like a laptop. Yes, you can make it faster by installing only minimal applications.
