Very slow internet speed on my main computer

Q: Very slow internet speed on my main computer

Hey people! My main computer's internet has been very slow. I'm getting only 30 mbps when I should be getting 150 mbps. All of my other devices get 150 mbps speeds. I get full speeds when connected with an ethernet cable. I have a qualcomm atheros ar9287 network adapter installed. The router I'm using is a Cisco DPC3848V. Any help is appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How are you connected, 802.11 "b" max is ~5.5Mbps, "a" and "g" max out at ~20 Mbps, etc. WiFi operates at the highest possible speed that both endpoints can support. For example, an 802.11g laptop connected to an 802.11n router will only work at the lower speed of "g". In other words, both devices need to support the same standard in order to operate at those speeds.

Also, are there any physical obstructions in the line of sight between devices? What's the distance between the devices? Is there any radio interference in the area?

Wikipedia: WiFi > Interference
Interference

For more details on this topic, see Electromagnetic interference at 2.4 GHz.

Wi-Fi connections can be disrupted or the internet speed lowered by having other devices in the same area. Many 2.4 GHz 802.11b and 802.11g access-points default to the same channel on initial startup, contributing to congestion on certain channels. Wi-Fi pollution, or an excessive number of access points in the area, especially on the neighboring channel, can prevent access and interfere with other devices' use of other access points, caused by overlapping channels in the 802.11g/b spectrum, as well as with decreased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between access points. This can become a problem in high-density areas, such as large apartment complexes or office buildings with many Wi-Fi access points.

Additionally, other devices use the 2.4 GHz band: microwave ovens, ISM band devices, security cameras, ZigBee devices, Bluetooth devices, video senders, cordless phones, baby monitors, and (in some countries) Amateur radio all of which can cause significant additional interference. It is also an issue when municipalities or other large entities (such as universities) seek to provide large area coverage.Click to expand...

Even bad electrical connections can cause broad RF spectrum emissions.

Hello Everyone,
I need help please. I have 4 computers (iMac, 2 laptops and 1 PC desktop) on a wireless network in different rooms of my house. All but one have 20+ mbps speed. The problem desktop computer is new but has 2.4 mbps speed. I have cable modem with a fast bandwidth and a Cisco N600 router.

I changed the network card (ASUS PCE-N53 Wireless -N Adapter) in the problem computer which didn't improve anything. As I write this, I am using a laptop on the desk with the problem computer and just did a speedtest which came in at 20.13 mbps. If I hard wire the problem computer it runs at 30+ mbps.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Okay, this has been going on for weeks. Even my pretty techie bro is out of ideas. My brother returned to college not long ago, but he was still home when it all started. I'd asked him to see if internet was slow or anything, and he checked and told me it was fine. A few days later my dad brought his laptop home from work. The laptop is only on our network when he's doing stuff at home - but I asked him, and I was for myself it was completely fine...and fast. And as my brother's now back at college with his laptop, my computer is generally the only one on the network, but as it was going on before that, I know their laptops weren't effecting anything.

Now that we're done with the back-story, I'll do my best to explain what's going on: The connection on my computer is fine. Sometimes it'll short out, but generally it's good. However, it's always slow - about maybe 2 times faster than dial-up. But pretty often it becomes incredibly slow, taking as much as 20-30 minutes to load something, even simpler things.

That's the best I can come up with right now about the problem. Resetting the router and/or restarting the computer can help a little, but it eventually goes to near dial-up speed, then down to when it's very slow.

I guess something to add is that I'm the only one with Vista on the computer. My dad's laptop has XP, and my brother has a Mac laptop.

I've only used up a little less than 1/4 of the s... Read more

Hello Everyone,

So I go on my desktop computer today and what do you know, the internet is really slow. I do a speedtest on my laptop which is right next desktop, and it has regular internet speeds. However, my desktop is really struggling, at times I can't even load basic pages, let alone play games. It's a custom built PC and I'm using a Netcomm wireless adapter to get a wireless connection (I can't use wired).

What happened?!? Why is this randomly happening? Is my adapter broken? Do I need to update something?

Sorry if this in the wrong place.
If you need any more information to help me solve this problem then just ask.

Thanks,
~Gun

Hi!
I have been having a major issue with my internet.

I will try to provide as much information as possible.

First of all:
-I have cable internet, my ISP is Charter
-I have 2 Computers. 1 Laptop and 1 Desktop. And i have an old desktop computer.

Ok, so the problem. I am able to connect both the laptop and the desktop(new) to the internet through my modem and what not. I just updated to Windows 10 but I think the problem was with Windows 8 too, Sometimes my internet is out on my PC while the internet is still up on my brothers PC, tho this problem happens about 3 times a very few days.. We have 5+ computers in the house and 4 are on daily while 3 is being used daily the 4th one is not very used daily and sometimes off most of the time. So the 2 computers have Windows 10 and 3rd computer has Windows 7 while the 4th computer has Windows 10 also. I read on an article which says that Windows 10 uses bandwidth without you know and I checked task manager and on windows 8 my CPU and Memory was just fine and when I upgraded to Windows 10 my CPU spiked to about 20% and Memory spiked to about 72% and sometimes random numbers appear on all 4 sections( CPU, Memory, Disk, Network).

So how can I fix this problem or is it just Windows 10?

Hi there I am not sure what you would like me to post here, but I believe my computer is infected, oddly enough I am somewhat enjoying this weird issue as I have been able to discover interesting websites like this one to get help. I have been in computers since the Commodore VIC20, I have defeated and rid computers of tons of viruses but this one has got me going around in circles to the point where I cannot tell if I am infected or not. I could just wipe the computer and reinstall windows but I believe something is on my computer but hell if I can find it. I have always been mostly on the hardware side of things and have not dabbled on on the software side of things alot.

I have posted on other sites about my issues with my computer and have received no responses, so I am not sure if my issue is no one knows what to do or what. Please let me know what logs or programs you would like me to run. These are the things I believe to be symptoms:

Limited Internet Bandwidth I have a 100Mbit/sec Connection that is limited to specifically 7.5 MBits/sec, i have other systems running on the same network that have no issue achieving the 100Mbits/sec bandwidth.

I cannot use On Screen Keyboard at all it fails to load, one of my Online games I play my account got hacked via the virus or keylogger grabbing my password and email address to log in to the game.

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?
2. If I should get my LAN card replaced, what model do I need that's compatible w... Read more

Hi, My friend did a windows recovery after he had a black screen when starting windows. Both IE and Firefox had slow connectivity yet I had him do a speedtest with speakeasy.net and it showed good speeds. He says the longer the computer is on, the slower is a surfing the internet. CPU usage is normal.

internet speeds:
2500kbps/400kbps

Could the recovery have messed with his computer networking drivers? He used a gateway recovery disk. His computer is either a gateway or dell computer.

A:After computer recovery - browser speed slow, internet speedtest normal

So your computer is NOT a gateway or dell? Is that what your saying? If so, you can't just use any recovery cd on your computer. Let me know more details.

I found this helpful information on possible solutions, very familiar with errors on previous Microsoft operating systems. http://www.vandersluijs.nl/content/view/973/96/lang,enI uninstalled one of the suggested updates and so far it is fine, the update was only optional so no security threats. I think it has helped, not certain if it will be like a fresh install because windows is slower than it was two weeks ago. If 3 weeks is best windows can handle for being ready for a new install I may have to go back to Linux. I hope this thread can stay on this forum somewhere to help others follow the link I posted above for possible solutions to this problem, it will save them time and effort trying numerous things.

Hi,

Im at work rigth now and we have two computers. The one Im typing on works just fine. The second one has a little problem... Internet Explorer takes about 5 minutes to startup the main page WHATEVER the main page is. Once the first page is loaded, it works just fine, highspeed as it should. I started the day with IE 6 and updated it to version 7 thinking it might help but nope, no change. The computer has been scanned with Norton antivirus Corporate edition, up to date as well as Ad-aware SE plus. The Cookies, history and all have been cleared and I defragged.. In case that helps...
So whats going on? Im thinking it might be corrupted files in the IE program itself that cant be fixed by just updating IE, then i might need the windows XP cd to fix it?

What else could it be?

Well, I'm still bumming around CA and between houses. On this visit to my parents' house, there are two messed up machines. I've already got one thread open and running about my Mom's computer, and I believe it's near cleaned up. Now I've plugged in my External HD to my Dad's to move some files around, but I notice Firefox is all gummed up and running super slow. In fact, downloads of pix or files is super slow, so is switching between tabs with, say 15 tabs open. The total RAM eaten up by it is significant, but shouldn't be a big deal. Since I plugged in the HDD before I noticed problems, I'm worried I got something on all of my data too.So having been down this road before, I've already run Combofix and ESET just to see what they'd come up with. The power cut may have disabled your connection.

First port of call, check Network Connections; may just be a case of right clicking on Local Area Connection and selecting 'enable'.

May be that simple, otherwise can you get another Ethernet cable to test it.

My computer was running just fine til about a week ago. I am on a secure network that was before yielding 1/mb/sec download speeds on wireless router. I have tested the network on my laptop and it still runs just fine, however my desktop has become sluggish, the download speeds are down to 30kb/sec and the search function has been taken over by "searchfastfind.net" that Malware Bytes has failed to find. Today the internet would simply die and not reconnect, or my browser would redirect to dead sites. The CPU on any processes doesn't seem high, but my computer is screaming like it's running several programs at once. I am using Vista, all updates installed that are available and needed.

The main desktop is connected to the router and modem yet can't access the Internet, with a "no Internet access" sign, while the laptop says it IS connected yet I can only use Skype.

Can anyone provide me with help please?

A:Main computer can't use Internet, laptop can only use Skype

Hi there,

I have 2 computers (+ a laptop sometimes). Both computers are ethernet hard wired to a belkin wireless router & the laptop uses 'wireless' connection.

Both computers often remain on for hours; the main one (with the router installed on it) will very often fail to connect to the internet via explorer, O/E or even any updater (avg etc.) after being on for several hours. A reboot cures the problem.

However, the other computer never loses its connection. (Nor does the laptop). All run the XP o.s.

All suggestions for a cure gratefully accepted please.

Many thanks in anticipation.

A:computer normal use on internet when power main flickered twice BSOD

thomart,
Welcome to SevenForums.

Disconnect any unneeded devices.

does problem still occur?

Do you have a Win 7 DVD?

Did you make a Win 7 System Repair Disc?

I realize you don't have a working system, but using your memory, any label info on the computer, any purchase orders, etc. then please fill out your system specs as much as possible

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Thank you for taking the time to read my request.

I purchased an HP entertainment laptop (windows vista os) about a year ago and I started experiencing problems with my speed a couple of months ago.

Most recently, I've experienced the following:

1. Slower speed surfing the net
2. Slow to open up an Internet Window (about 8 seconds)
3. Can not browse internet at the same time that an anti virus program is turned on (to monitor). Has occured with Norton and Trend Micro.
4. Can no longer access I-Tunes store or Rhapsody store when I open the applications.
5. You Tube videos are stop and go instead of running fluidly.

All of this is new behavior for my laptop...

Any ideas on what may be happening or what I should try to do next? I downloaded hijackthis, so I have that software program on my computer.

If anyone is willing to help, I would greatly appreciate it! Please let me know if you need additional information.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi

My internet speed is consistently fast (25-30mbps), but Chrome and IE sometime run slow sometimes. For instance I'll be browsing Yahoo fine for a couple minutes, but then I'll try to open another tab to do a Google search and the browser will stall for about a minute before loading that page. Or I could click a link on a webpage and the browser will stall and show a blank white page for a minute. Loading the content on a webpage usually takes close to the normal amount of time, it just stalls before hand. It doesn't happen every time I click something, but it happens often enough to be a nuisance.

Last night I went under settings and did "Referesh your PC" which is supposed to restore defaults and delete installed apps, but the problem is still here.

EDIT--

Here's an example: Everything usually stalls at the same time but not always. Just now, Gmail stalled for 2 minutes but I was still able to open a new tab and complete a Google search. However, when I tried opening a new tab and going to Gmail that way, that tab stalled too.

A:Internet Broswers are Slow but Internet Speed is Fast

I get that too sometimes, it is clearly caused by your computer (and in my case my computer) not your connection. I have ti with chrome but not IE, because i never open IE to check it. I have windos 8 so we have similar experiences in several respects. Mine haven't been as bad as yours lasting only 30 seconds or so at worst. I think this is due to large processes running in task manager and hogging memory/processor capacity. The only things i can advise is to: see if there are any large processes running under the details tab of task manager which should not be running, scan with your antivirus and with malwarebytes (there is a free version)to check that the cause isn't a virus of some sort, see if any startup items can be safely disabled (this can be done from a feature within the program CCleaner from piriform) and try clearing your temp files (CCleaner can also do this) and browsing history along with deleting any junk you have in the recycle bin and deleting old files you no longer need/uninstalling old programs you no longer need. When using CCleaner be VERY CAREFUL not to disable startup items without first verifying they are safe to stop (check google) and NEVER use it's registry tools (anything that attempts to "clean" the registry can damage your system). One other thing that might help you is disbaling add-ons in the browser and making plugins "clcik to play" rather than running automatically, doing this will mean there is less content to load so loading will be fas... Hello dazsteeloman and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I see no signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.Running video over an internet connection is mostly dependent on the connection speed. If you have a broadband connection then your ISP should be able to test the line for true speed. Running video over a dialup connection will definitely produce pausing for buffering. For help with internet applications I suggest posting in the Web Browsing forum here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/14/web-browsingemail-and-other-internet-applications/ . If your desktop is a factory-brand one and not a self-built one, advise us what the brand name and model name and model number and serial number of it is.

If it's able to load its Windows operating system and has a working internet connection, do the following in it:
Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) file.
After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.
Information about your computer will appear.
Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

Greetings all,

I was recently asked by a friend to look at her office computer with a complaint that the system was sluggish (especially in regard to the Internet).

Following is a description of the machine:
Dell Studio XPS 7100 desktop
Six-core CPU running at 3.00 GHz
Six gigabytes of DDR3 10600 RAM

Started on system by cleaning it of dust bunnies (all vents were covered).
Checked performance through Task Manager and found the CPU running about 1% - 3% at rest. RAM usage was about 1.65 GB.
De-selected some non-essential startup items and got the base memory usage down to around 1.10 GB
I installed and ran CCleaner and removed 8.5 GB of clutter.
Malwarebytes found 19 PUP files.

Checked the Network settings and found that this particular system was configured with a wired connection as well as a wireless connection. The wired connection reports that it has a speed of 1 Gbps. The wireless indicates that it is connected at 54 Mbps.

There is an older Dell Optiplex 755 in this office running Windows 7 with only a wired Internet connection. This machine is a dual-core CPU equipped with 4 GB DDR2 667 MHz memory. As far as Internet speed, it is much faster than the better equipped XPS 7100.

Just wondering if it is possible that the XPS 7100 is using the wireless connection by default even though it also has a wired connection.
Thanks for your valuable input.

A:Slow Internet Speed

I forgot to mention that the Dell XPS 7100 is running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

I started having the problem yesterday. I booted up my pc connected to the internet through wireless and tried to load up google, and it took like 20 seconds to load. I have Road runner high speed internet 30mb/s so it shouldn't take that long to load up google. Anyway i have tried to load other websites and the same thing, takes even longer. So i tried my wifes laptop (wireless) and it loads everything just fine. I even hooked up my ehternet cable to my pc and the load times are still slow. Tried Firefox, Chrome, and IE but still same problem. The weird thing too is when i run internet speed test on my dekstop ( the slow one) it still says my d/l speed is 25mb/s upload 1.6 mb/s and latency is 39 ms. My xbox still runs at same speed. Have also run Malaware to clean spyware, avast antivirus, and trend micro (online) antivirus, but nuthing. I don't know what else to do. I looked online but it seems like all the problems i have found like mine had no resolution. Its driving me crazy. I don't want to reformat, but i don't know what else to do.

I dont get the internet speed that my isp offers me.
like when I surf pages and load videos it is very slow, but on the other hand my isp offers me 1mbps.
when I login to safe mode I feel that the internet there is very fast but in normal mode it is slow.
some times I get speed of 1.5mb/s from the isp and normally I get 70 kb/ps which is really slow and nothing compared to what I should be getting.
can u please fix this issue as well.

A:Slow Internet speed

I don't know that I can't fix your issue, but I can help you check for what might contribute to the slowdown:

What type of connection do you have: Dial-up, cable or DSL?
Click on Start> Settings> Control Panel> System:
[o]What is the operating system?
[o]How much Ram is installed?
Click on Start< Run> type in msconfig> Enter> Choose Startup tab
[o]How many boxes are checked?
Right click on the Taskbar> Task Manager>(in Normal Mode)
[o]Processes tab> Look at the bottom and tell me how many processes are running
[o]Performance tab> Look on the bottom for the Physical Memory
[o]How much Total Memory?
[o]How much Available Memory?
[o]How much is in the System Cache?
================================
When I have the information from the 4 questions above, I may be able to help you.

Logging on to Safe Mode will prevent some drivers and Services from running, so the system will move faster, but you will be able to do less than in Normal Mode.

In Normal Mode, everything you have checked on the Startup Menu to start on boot has to load. Most of those processes will run in the background. This can slow you down.

I do have ESET Smart Security which did block an attack from that site and I have not found any viruses using the program. However, I did reimage my laptop and it runs normally now. The trouble is now my desktop computer is doing the same thing after I visited the same site on my desktop and its doing the same thing. I also am running ESET on this machine and it blocked all of the attacks, ect from the site. Now, my desktop internet is running very slow! So, what I did was I did a HiJack this search and I came up with this logfile:

C:\Program Files\Logitech\Gaming Software\LWEMon.exe
C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\MOM.exe
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\GrooveMonitor.exe
C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Smart Security\egui.exe
C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java\Java Update\jusched.exe
C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools Pro\DTShellHlp.exe
C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools Pro\DTAgent.exe
C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CCC.exe
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe

Hey guys, last week my pc started to go slow, internet speed and also opening shutting things. I decided it was time for a reinstall using my disc that came with my machine.

I installed it as usual firstly wiping then reinstalling as the disc said so, but after installation, when i went on the net the internet speed was still really slow ? so new installation and still slow speeds.

I unplugged modem and treied refreshing it but still slow speeds, i thought it was the modem so called my provider virgin and who ran some tests all came back fine.

My brother has the same modem in his room as we both have seperate internet modems, so i decided to plug his modem into my pc and it was slow also, yet both modems run sweetly on his pc ?

Ive tested adapters to the modem and even changed ethernet cables with no joy.

I have also noticed once i unplug and restart the modem i get my full speed for about 2 mins then it gradually dies on me so if i start a download i'll see my full 20mb getting used then gradually drops to like under 1mb.

any ideas guys ?
