Find & Replace (but Replace in a different Column)

Q: Find & Replace (but Replace in a different Column)

Hello...

[I need to know if there is a function...perhaps a Macro or Query...or a more complex 'Find & Replace'...that can accomplish the following...'cause my database is huge; & I'm hoping not to do this manually]:

I keep an Access database for my homeowners' association on the condition & conformity of 24 different exterior attributes, for about 2400 townhomes. The Board of Directors wants to move away from using the term "Grandfathered", which is distinguished by the acronym "GF" in the database column that shows conformity (labeled IAW). We use this database to generate annual architectural reports for our 10,000 residents.

Our board wants the entry "GF" replaced with a "Y"...they want the GF entry removed from the report completely; & they're serious about it.

Now...I have already created a Query that has located all the GF entries in their various columns of various records...which our Board wants me to use in an internal "in-office" database (in order to keep track of what attributes actually were grandfathered originally...as a reference for our field inspector when he inspects the townhomes).

But we also want to create an unassuming symbol on the report...perhaps an ~ or a *...something that will alert the inspector to an attribute that once was grandfathered, on his field report. [This is to be done so that he will not
be flying blind when he comes across a non-conforming attribute...i.e., he will see the symbol & know that that symbol means there used to be a "GF" in it's place.]

BUT...we want to move that symbol to a different column...(a column labeled "Comments").

I could run the 'Find & Replace' function...find all the GF's...& replace them with a Y~...but that ~ symbol would go right back in the very same column that the GF came out of.

So...is there a way to find all the GF's in one column; & replace them w/ a Y in that same column...but have a symbol "~" appear in another column of the same record?

I know it sounds complicated...but can it be done?

Thanks,
mark4man

Preferred Solution: Find & Replace (but Replace in a different Column)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Find & Replace (but Replace in a different Column)

see attached. But actually getting that data back to the table, if that is what you want, is a bit trickier.

We have a TON of text based INI files for our companies software deployment scripts.

We also have a TON of people who use different ways to deploy the same software. On one server alone we can have a bunch of different ways people install E.G.

msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symant~1.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\server\share\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i \\server\share\SAV\WIN32\Symantec Client Security.msi
msiexec.exe /quiet /norestart /i <qt/>\\dfs\dfsshare\SAV\Symantec Client Security.msi<qt/>

and so on down the line.

I LIKE the abilities of Ecobyte Replace Text 2.2 but the problem is I have to type in the whole line as it is in the file to then replace it with the new one for the new deployment.

What I want to do is have a search based on PART of the line so I can then put in Symant~1.msi and Symantec Client Security.msi and replace the ENTIRE line with a new line.

Is there any multi file utility that allows you to search for part of a text line but replace the entire text line?

Hi all,

The laptop in question is a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4334. A few weeks ago, it got dropped right on its corner with the power plug still in it; the little metal plug of the AC adapter is now slightly crooked, and the power jack has a little chip off the plastic part of it.

Anyway, after this mishap, it worked fine for another 3, 4 weeks, and then suddenly this week, it's refusing to power up. Its battery has been shot for a while (can't hold a charge), and I've been using it with the battery out. Why the sudden refusal to boot?

I took the whole thing apart---minus the little chip, the power jack looks totally fine and cosmetically sound. Put the whole thing back together, taking care to check that plugs were snug---still no power.

Stuck in the crappy battery; booted just fine (and then shut itself down after like 2 minutes).

How likely is it that it's the power jack which is broken? And why did it take this long to crap out, if it IS broken?

A new one of those silly jacks costs over $20 on eBay, so I want to make sure that it's the jack before I just up and buy one. Of course, if it's the AC adapter that's broken, that would cost even more! Bah.

Input?

A:Replace the power jack or replace the adapter?

AND/OR inside the case the the jack is soldered directly to the motherboard. Is also possible that
1) It's already cracked
2) If not yet, it's gonna crack

So look to see what connection looks like between power jack and motherboard, If you feel u wanna/can re-solder yourself or the typically price to redo the whole power thing seems to run $125 parts/labor/warranty if you take it somewhere. So how much is it all worth to you?

I have a document that is hundreds of pages long.

Within this document there are certain sentences, phrases that repeat and I need to find them in a practical manner.

Now I could go through manually, look for lines I suspect are repeated elsewhere and search for them, but that would take forever.

Is there any practical way to do this with Word 2010, Windows 7 Index or some other piece of software?

Hi all,
I recall being able to add the "find and replace" option to OE a while back. I think it was linked somehow to Microsoft Word or Notepad which has this option. I would like to remove (<<) from forwarded emails directly in OE rather than having to cut and paste to notepad and remove the (<<). I know my old imac's OE had an option to "clean up text" or simular which removed all the quotes. I don't see this in todays OE for XP though.

I do recall there being a tweak that added this function though.
Thanks in advance,

Monker

A:Outlook Express Edit>find>(find And Replace?)

I've never noticed that option, in OE.Just a suggestion, but I find StripMail to be faster, than using Word.StripMail is a FREEWARE utility that: * Strips the characters ">" and "|" from forwarded e-mails. * Formats the text into paragraphs, making it easier to read. * Changes the text's right margin, by indenting. * Can be used with any e-mail client.

Can anyone explain what each bit of code does sequentially ?

That doesn't look like code, looks like plain machine garbage. Sometimes it's because of corruption or not being able to substitue a font.

I recently did a change of the Computer Name (Control Panel - System - Computer Name - Change) shortly after setting up a new XP Pro machine, and am concerned over the fact that I still see many instances of the old name in the Registry.

I am now seeing where that may actually be posing a problem, too: Norton Anti-Virus is supposed to use the item in XP's Scheduled Tasks to scan drive C: once a week, but I noticed that since that name change it stopped working. When I look in the properties of the Scheduled Task, it has in the field for "Run as" the string [oldcomputername]\Administrator". When I try to change it to the new computer name, it lets me edit it but as soon as I hit OK or Apply it goes right back to the old entry! I've even tried deleting the Task and creating a brand new one using Norton's interface, yet it still comes up with the old computer name there!

I'm not really sure where that's being kept, but I assume it's in the Registry.

For this reason and as a general maintenance step, I want to go through the Registry and do a global Find-and-Replace to change all instances of the old computer name to the new one.

Is that even advisable in the first place and, if so, what utility would I want to use?

Thanks!

I don't know of any Windows Supplied utilities. FWIW, I've never bothered to search out the old names when I change a computer name. I have seen that you need to fix the scheduled tasks, but I don't know of any other issues that arise...

Is there a program available that will allow a person to find and replace entries in the registry.

Yes, I am aware of the issues regarding making changes in the registry. However, my external hard drive failed and I need to change all entries related to the external hard drive in order to reinstall many of the programs that were on it.

Microsoft will not install anything because G:/ drive is invalid. Adobe will not install for the same reason. Many of my other programs look for the G: drive and stop installing when it is not found.

Just cloned an ailing drive for a customer. The new drive works fine - no problem.

Just one small issue: My customer had originally bought his PC second-hand and he'd like to remove all traces of the previous owner's name from the new hard drive.

My question: Is there a registry app that makes a simple job of finding and replacing all registry instances of say, George, with Harold?

Obviously, I can do this manually, and have done in the past. But it was a tedious job. If such an app exists as I've described above, I'd like to know about it :--))

Thanks in anticipation....

PS - It would be helpful if you're able to suggest something that you KNOW works, rather than an app that you haven't personally tried. I say this because there are several progs such as 'New Owner' which purport to change the owner's name, but in actuality only change a few instances of the entry instead of ALL.

Hi all... I am working with a MS Word 2000 document that has a huge batch of numbers involved. The problem is that some of the numbers have run together... e.g.:

I can identify these errors just fine by searching for ^#^#^#^#^#... five digits in a row. Is there any way of doing a replace, using the same digits but with a space entered in after the first three? Right now I'm changing it by hand and have already spent nearly three hours engaged in this tedium. Any advice would be wonderful! Thanks.... Jim

A:Find & Replace question...

Are your 3 (or erroneous 6)digit numbers in seperate cells?
If so, you could do something like this:

I entered a list of 3 digit numbers and a few 6 digit numbers in cells A1 to A10. In B1, I entered:
=IF(A1>99999, LEFT(A1,3)&" "&RIGHT(A1,3),A1)
and then copied the formula down to B10.

In other words, if the value in the cell is a 6 digit number, show the 3 characters on the left, followed by a space, followed by the 3 characters on the right.

Alternatively, you could put the LEFT and RIGHT formula in adjacent cells, so that you only have 3 digit numbers in each resulting cell:

In B1, enter:
=LEFT(A1,3)

And in C1, enter:
=IF(A1>99999,RIGHT(A1,3),"")

You can then copy the resulting data and Paste Special > Values into another worksheet or workbook.

Hi Susevienna. Welcome to the forum.

I think your best bet here would be to use Advanced filter.

Sort & Filter > Advanced

For your list range: Select your data
Criteria Range: Create heading(s), which matches that where your email addresses sit under. Multiple headings if required. Under which, put in "*@*" without the quotes.

You can select 'copy to new location' and select the new location to which you'd like your list to go.

Hope this makes sense.

In Excel, how do I write a macro that would look for a string in an entire column. If the string is found, it will copy the value to the next column in that same file?
For example
In column A Have this adtr<JCNECHMCBDISA and I want to look just for the MC and “MC = MNDJ” if it found the MC in column replace with MNDJ (if it’s possible in the same row next column). Its not always MC or that size (it’s a mass scale search and replace). I have tried an if but didn’t work and then I try recording a macro but I need help because it replace 2 times because sometimes the replacements have the exact word that I’m also looking for.
Example

Selection.Replace What:="TIPOLEIJ", Replacement:="POL-222869;LIN33359;MC5875;DS23659", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False
Selection.Replace What:="MC", Replacement:="MNDJ", LookAt:=xlPart, _
SearchOrder:=xlByRows, MatchCase:=False, SearchFormat:=False, _
ReplaceFormat:=False

When it search for the word “TIPOLEIJ” it replace with “POL-222869;LIN33359;MC5875;DS23659" but when it search for MC it change the “TIPOLEIJ” replacement to “POL-222869;LIN33359;MNDJ875;DS23659” Im wondering if there is something that after it replace the value “lock” the cell so its not replace again.
Hope someone can help.Thanks

For this reason and as a general maintenance step, I want to go through the Registry and do a global Find-and-Replace to change all instances of the old computer name to the new one.

Is that even advisable in the first place and, if so, what utility would I want to use?

Thanks!

For some reason W7 has decided to change 'Copy and Replace' with 'Move and Replace' when picking a file up with the left mouse and dragging it to another folder where an old version of the file exists.

My Excel SS is in two places: My desktop and USB which I use for backup. I would simply open the folder on the USB pick up the file on the desktop with the left mouse and drag it to the USB folder. Then I would get the message 'Copy and Replace'.. But not anymore it's become 'Move and Replace'.

I know I can 'Copy and Replace' by holding down the Ctrl key but I dont want to.

It looks like there should be a simple answer

Can anyone help? I swear I didnt change anything.

A:How can I 'Copy and Replace' not 'Move and Replace'.

Hi,
Have you ever tried right click drag and drop ?
There will be a list option after you drop,
Cheers.

Hi guys,

In my Excel 2010 workbook there is a cell with the value of "90" in type of number/general. When I go to find and replace dialog box and try to find the number "90" by typing it in Find what rectangle, then I want the program looks for it in formulas (look in: Formulas). But it shows that "90" as the result! Why? I said it to look for it in Formulas not in values.

A:Excel 2010, find & replace

If I understand you correctly, the 90 is a value computed from a formula in that cell.

You should search for 90 as a value if you want to find that cell.

Searching for 90 in a formula would mean that you are searching for the number "90" somewhere within a formula, not within a cell value.

If the formula in that cell was =110-90, I would expect that a search for 90 in formulas would find that cell.

If the formula in that cell was =110-20, I would not expect that a search for 90 in formulas would find that cell. A search for 90 in values would find it.

If the formula in that cell was =110-90+70, I'd expect that cell to be found by both searching for value or searching in formulas because 90 is the value of that cell and 90 is also found in the formula.

Here is what I want to accomplish with VBA:

Select Sheet "Data"
X= Cell A1, Y= Cell B1
Select Sheet "Result"
Find X
Replace the next cell to the right with Y
Find Next Occurrence and replace again (if it exists), If not:
Select Sheet "Data"

Hi everybody, I have an issue with my AIO HP Pavilion 22-H010EL TouchSmart.The hard drive broke twice while PC was covered by warranty; now the warranty period is over, and the hard drive broke again. I suppose there's a power supply issue, in fact I see the hard drive has more boots up than I actually did; sometimes I can clearly hear a boot up noise while the PC is on (and I'm sure it's not because of the stand-by, since it happens while I'm using it). Also, just after the first hard drive replacement, it shown 7 boots up in just a hour; I suppose the SATA/Power Cable is damaged, causing the issue described, but it could be the motherboard, too.I'd like to replace the cable to see if it works, I really hope it does; thank you in advance for any reply.

Hi there,

I have a very straightforward problem and want the simplest way of getting around it.

I have a list of two lists of schools, each with a unique identifier. The first list contains some schools that have incorrect identifiers, in amongst schools that have the correct code. The second has the school, with both the incorrect and correct identifier. I need to find the incorrect identifiers in the first list, and replace them with their correct identifier as in the second list. Apart from the identifier, I also have the school's name, which should be identical.

A graphic example:

Sheet 1:
SchoolCode*******SchoolName
12344001 *******JS Primary - correct
12340002 *******PP School - incorrect
12340003 ********KK School - incorrect
12340004 ********HU School - correct
12340005 *******Pdf high - incorrect
*
*
* etc, with the distribution of correct vs incorrect in no particular order.

Sheet2:

SchoolCode(incorrect)*******SchoolName*********SchoolCode(Correct)
12340002 *******JS Primary *********52349809
12340003 *******KK School ********52689757
12340005 *******Pdf high ********93384002

Is there a macro or some other way of finding and replacing the incorrect codes in sheet 1 with the correct ones in sheet 2?

Thanks so much,

Z

A:Mass find and replace - new to macros!

Once you have made the choice,
you can store the incorrect value in one variable and the correct one in another one.

With vba you can use the replace() function

The syntax is replace(<complete textline>,<value to search for>,<value to replace with>)

So if you are in a cell
you could say activecell.value = replace(activecell.value,"wrong","corrected")

See if this helps, may sound strange but try it on a simple line of texct and see

okay here it comes. I need to find a way to find replace data on a big scale for excel 2003. I have a bunch of numbers(5m or so) that correspond to a different number. I don't know how to write a macro at all, and am currently find replacing, but this seems like it's going to take a life time.

Example:
Worksheet1
1____________ 10000
2____________ 93233
3____________ 43234

Worksheet 2 parenthesis is a cell
(1) (2) (2) (1) (3) (2)
(2) (1) (2) (3) (2) (3) etc.

I need to make worksheet 2 numbers change to represent the numbers corresponding to worksheet 1 so for every (1) that comes up it changes to 10000. I hope I explained this right. Please Help, I will continue find replacing while I hope for an answer.

A:Odd Find Replace Excel God Needed :)

The simplest and quickest way is to use built-in Excel functions.
You will need a 3rd worksheet for metadata. Not knowing the actual sheet names, I'll assume they are called

Sheet1
Sheet2
Sheet3
Also, let's say Sheet1 has the data in columns A & B, and data in Sheet2 begins at cell A1
So, in Sheet3, in cell A1 you will need this formula:

Code:
=VLOOKUP(Sheet2!A1,Sheet1!A:B,2,FALSE)
Extend the formula for as many cells as you have in Sheet2.
When ready, click on the upper left corner of Sheet3 to select all cells (i.e. the whole worksheet), press Ctrl+C, then from menu select Edit -> Paste Special -> Values.
As a result, you will have the desired numbers in Sheet3. You can then copy them to Sheet2, if you wish.

Jimmy

Edit:
I have assumed that 1____________ 10000 in your post means 1 in column A and 10000 in column B.
If 1____________ 10000 is in a single cell, then the above formula will not work, another one, a more complicated one will need to be used. I'll wait for you feedback before working it out.

I have written a macro in MS Word that basically checks items off a list. It is based off of the seach and replace function, all it does is serach for a term and when it finds it changes it's color to blue and makes it strikethrough. I don't know if this is the most efficient way of doing it but this is the way I've come up with.

What I would like to add to it is the ability to have it tell me when the term is not found in the list, and possibly add it to the bottom of the list in a red color or something. Anyone know how I could do that?

Here is the macro code:
Sub CrossOff()

For x = 1 To 5 'Find and replace 5 times

SearchTerm = InputBox("Word to search")

Selection.Find.ClearFormatting
Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting

With Selection.Find
.Text = SearchTerm 'Word to search for
.Replacement.Text = SearchTerm 'Replace with same word, different

formatting
End With

'Selection.Find.Replacement.ClearFormatting

With Selection.Find.Replacement
.Text = SearchTerm
.Font.Color = wdColorBlue 'change the text to blue
.Font.StrikeThrough = True 'cross it out
End With

Selection.Find.Execute Replace:=wdReplaceAll

Next x

End Sub

Geeks hey there,

I was just going through this forum and found that my problem can be solved here

I have 2 columns in excel A & B I want to find all my data of Column B in Column A and Replace it with "" nothing.

Please guide me accordingly will be very grateful for your help because they are more than 6000 rows and finding and replacing will just take hell of time. I have also attached a sample file.

I want to find all data of Column B in Column and want to replace with nothing ""

Thanks.

A:Multiple Find and Replace in Excel

Hi
Try this solution. In column C enter this formula;
=REPLACE(A1,FIND(B1,A1),LEN(B1)+1,"")
and copy it down the length of the data. If the result is as you want it you can then copy the entire column and pastespecial/values into column A if you want to overwrite that data. See the attached for how the formula works.

Do to hacking problems because of old web hosting not updating the hosting software we (my company) is having to do large find and replace of text on the code parts of html pages.

Instead of having to open each html web page and do a find and replace in FrontPage. Is there a way to do a find and replace on several pages or a whole folder at once. Any software that will do that?

Example: Can I have any type of software that will search a fold with 25 html files it. (for example only) Use find the word dog in the codes and replace with word cat in all 25 pages in the folder.

Opening the over 500 html web page we have doing a find and replace on the codes is going to take forever and I am looking for a way to speed that up.

Many of these web page where build back in last 90's when we were still all hand coding html and when frames was exciting new stuff. So there is not content manager being used.

Thank you for your time and any suggestions.

The fact that it is HTML is irrelevant if you have the source. It is just TEXT

Many text editors and search programs will do what you want.

What I need to do is probably simple, but I’m not really into VB.
It is this:

I want to hardcode find and replace text in an XML document (about 10 different replacements). These will be the same every time and the document will always be at c:\xxx\yyy.xml

So, for example, the XML document contains something like:

<Name>
<Forename>John</Forename>
<Surname>Smith</Surname>
</Name>
<Name>
<Forename>Peter</Forename>
<Surname>Jones</Surname>
</Name>

I want to find and replace every <Forename> with <Forename ID=“1”>, every <Surname> with <Surname ID=“2”> etc. etc. and I will want to do this regularly, the same replacements every time.

There are lots of find and replace utilities, but I would have to type in my find and replace criteria manually every time.

What I’d like to do is create a small .EXE to do the job with the find and replace strings coded in.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?
TIA.

Hi. I am trying to format a script in Microsoft Word for Mac and I'd like to be able to find every bit of text in parentheses and replace it with the same text in italics (including the parentheses themselves). I've tried to figure it out using wildcards and such, but I keep getting error messages that I'm not doing something right.

I'd appreciate any code I could use to do that.

Thanks!

Hi, My name is Shjon Watlington and Ive owned my HP Notebook - 15-ac147cl (ENERGY STAR) for about a year now. BAck when i first purchased it everythign seemed to work fine but after about 2 months of use a loud grinding noise started to occasionally pop up. bakc then these little bursts of noise were only transient and though i was concerned it didnt motivate me enough to try and contact Hp as I was  greatly busy with the start of school. Now though it has evolved into a constant issue and the grinding noise has only gotton louder. I took it to BestBuy's Geek squad and after going through several other possible causes for the issue they identified that the most likely cause was a bad bearing in the fan. They then gav eme two choices. 1. Try to open up the computer and fix the bearing myself, or 2. purchase a replacement fan. I decided on replacing the fan however I nor the geeksquad could find a replacement part on HP's website or anywhere else. I dont know if it would be possible to get HP to replace the fan because the fan was clearly defective or if I will have to purchase the fan, but I would like to find a solution as to where I can find the means to replace it so i can finally enjoy my computer without worrying that something is going to explode at any moment.
