Preferred Solution: [SOLVED] Cannot install programs after download

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: [SOLVED] Cannot install programs after download

You should be looking at HKCU, not HKU user shell folders -

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

Where did the %appdata% error message show up?

What did you download prior to this error occurring?

A:Windows 7 will download programs but not install programs

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

How many anti-virus applications are you using?

May I suggest you delete the lot and use Microsoft Security Essentails instead?

You can download it here and it's free: Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Having more than one A/V application running can impact on how your computer performs and it is not good practice to run more than one on your computer.

Vaio E Series Latop, running Windows 8
Not mine but trying to fix it for a friend.......
Attempted to download and install MalwareBytes & AVG Free, no luck.  Entered safe mode, was able to download both, installed same.
Ran MalwareBytes, removed 425 issues.  Ran again, clean.
Installed AVG Free, removed 15 issues, ran again, clean.
I have attempted to download a few other programs with no luck.  The box that appears above the task bar has the following options:  Open, Save (with dropdown) and cancel.  Open does nothing, Save, save as and save & open do nothing.  Cancel does nothing.
Thought maybe the problem was with startup programs, so I tried this:
Click Start and type msconfig in the Search box.

One the ‘General’ tab, click ‘Selective startup’, then click to clear the ‘Load startup items’ checkbox.

Click ‘Services’ tab, click ‘Hide all Microsoft services’, and then click ‘Disable all’.

Click OK, then click Restart.

After the computer restarts, try to run your program installation.

No luck, same as before, no option to run the install.....
Thanks for your help

I recently upgraded to windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit.... My dad did the install for me so im not exactly sure on his steps. But here is my problem:

I have a 10gb partition called drive (I), the OS is located here and takes up almost the entire 10gb

My C drive still has 137gb available

Once the system was running and online, i went on to get all the updates and install various program (java, adobe, itunes, etc)

I keep getting the error msg " the machine does not have enough memory to install this program, clear memory space and try again"

I saved the exe files in the C drive and i tried saving to my external as well, the download saves but when i attempt to install i get the same error msg...

Please help, i am not very tech savvy and would appreciate some feedback, i mean whats the point of a pc you cant download or install ANY files on??

A:I cant Download or install programs on Windows 7

I am going to take a guess and say that the problem is with your extremely tiny system volume (I). Your dad set you up for an unstable computer buy choosing a system volume that tiny. I'd back up the data, and do a clean istall using the entire disk as C.

I've just fully formatted my pc it's ntfs, xp pro sp3, i installed the drivers using my driver cd (AND68-17b), so i then downloaded google chrome, firefox, then i tried to run them and nothing happens?? anyone have any idea why this is?

Interestingly enough i then i tried transferring the download files on my external 1TB HD and it could run them from there and install them on my pc.

Why ain't the internal hd running any downloaded programs??

It also seems like "Add or Remove progams" app ain't working, their maybe more programs not working but most seem to be running at the moment

I did previously have an issue with "lsass.exe - system error. An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function." i then deleted that partion and install a fresh copy on the drive, although i don't get this message no more.

Really confused here, this is never occurred before, if anyone can help it would be highly appreciated.

A:I've just formatted my pc i can download programs but can't install them?

Hi Boxing and welcome to TSF.

Sounds a bit strange after a fresh install? I see that you have Service Pack 3 installed; was this via a slipstreamed install or via Windows Update (just want to make sure that everything is fully up to date.

Can you check that 'DCOM Server Process Launcher' is set to 'Automatic' in Services.

Windows Key+R and type 'services.msc' and hit OK. (without quotes) Scroll down to DCOM Server Process Launcher, double click on it to access the properties box and make sure it is set to 'Automatic'. You might also want to Stop the service and then Start it again.

It also seems like "Add or Remove progams" app ain't working

Do you mean that some programs aren't being uninstalled, or that Add/ Remove isn't there at all?

A:Programs wont install after download

I'm also having problems downloading programs off of the Internet and installing them on VISTA Ultimate 32-bit and VISTA Ultimate 64-bit. I've tried running the programs as an Administrator, and everything else that I can think of.

I even swapped out the Motherboard. In the end, I gave up, and called Microsoft Support. I had to pay $60. This was a week and a half ago. It seems that some systems will not allow programs to be installed if they are downloaded from the Internet. They have no known fix, and "are working on it". I just can't wait until this hits the news. An OS that doesn't allow you to install programs off of the Internet.

I believe it has something to do with either the authentication by VISTA, or VISTA corrupts the downloaded program. If you d/l the program on another laptop, put it on a USB drive (or a CD/DVD), it will install from there.

Good luck!

I assume you've restarted your computer a few times since you posted. Any changes, or are things still stalling?

It looks to me like you've got a firewall blocking outgoing access there (possibly as far as blocking all outgoing connections).

Okay guys, this is pretty weird. I forgot that I uninstalled my anti virus 1 week ago and now my computer goes crazy. It won't let me open the Windows update, System Restore and Download/Install .exe and AntiViruses. When I try to download Anti virus' (Avast,Avira, ESET, MSE, Malwarebytes) all fail at 99% of download. I don't even know the reason -- now since I have many games and files in my pc and I don't want to do a reformat or re-install my os. Is there any other way to fix this issue? If you need more information (if I'm missing something) please kindly tell so. Hope my prob will get fixed asap.

I support the computers at my Church. I have a problem with users installing programs that frequently end up causing problems. unfortunately written restrictions have not worked. I need a way to restrict most users from downloading and or installing programs. They should go through the Administrator. unfortunately due to financial consideration I have limitations. Does any one have any idea how to do this within the confines of windows 7 home premium or utilizing a economical utility?

Remember Group Policies are not available.

thanks in advance for any and all help.

A:Restrict download/install programs windows 7 home

As the users are able to install software I will assume they are using an admin account. Only an admin account can install software. All admin accounts are equal and trying to impose restrictions on what they can do is an exercise in futility. The only way to prevent users from installing software is to give them standard user accounts.

I hope this is the right forum for this kind of question, first time on one of these sites.

I downloaded Starcraft 2 last night and went to bed, then got up this morning to install it. When I double clicked on the install file, nothing happened. I waited and did it again. I rebooted my computer and tried again, nothing. When opening my task manager, I have an installer.exe running, but it seems to freeze as soon as I start the file and does absolutely nothing.

So I went to Blizzard's tech support and found the corresponding topic, they told me to make sure all my drivers were up to date. I went to Dell's tech support and found the right drivers, then downloaded them. However, I cannot install them because when I start the install, nothing happens. Again, I get an exe file in my task manager but all it does is appear then sit there.

Has anyone else seen this sort of behavior? If so, how can I go about fixing it?

A:Cannot download/install drivers/programs, Windows XP, Inspiron 530s

If you haven't already do a complete uninstall of Starcraft 2. Can you now do your Dell updates?

Also, when you tried installing the first time did you disable your firewall/antivirus? I found if I don't disable my Online Armor (great firewall by the way) I'll have loading/installing issues. Once I install a game and then renable my firewall then things are fine.

My laptop OS is Windows 7 and I'm using Avast free as my antivirus program. I have tried to download several programs which appear to go through the download procedure successfully, but then I can't find the programs on my computer. I don't get any error messages. The latest program I tried to download is Open Office. I temporarily disabled Avast. I tried to download Open Office with all three browsers that I use (IE, Chrome and Firefox) and in each case the exe showed up in downloads. After I ran the exe, I couldn't find the program (I clicked on "Start" and typed in "Open Office," but found nothing. Open Office also did not show up in Control Panel, "Uninstall a Program."

I previously used Cnet for downloads for several years until I started getting malware and it took hours to figure out how to get rid of it. I then switched to Softpedia and successfully installed several programs with no problems, until the current issue where programs just don't show up on my computer. Is it possible that Softpedia is the issue? I have considered trying Source Forge but am concerned about winding up with more malware.

I've tried finding a solution to this problem online, but it doesn't seem to be a common issue. I'd appreciate any advice, but please use simple terms as I am not a sophisticated computer user. Thanks.

Dear Friends,
I apologize if this is the wrong forum. I wasn't sure if this was a Windows Vista issue or not.

Last night in the middle of the night, the automatic windows update came through as usual. When I got up early this AM to do some work, none of my programs would open (Word, Excel, Kindle, etc.) and my laptop, which normally connects to my wireless internet automatically, would not hook up either. Control Panel, etc. won't open either.

Since nothing is working in regular mode, I went to safe mode. I went to my list of updates to remove the update, but it was not listed there. I went to system restore and tried to go back to a day before today, and the only restore point listed to choose from is from 3 AM this morning.

In SafeMode I could open word and even work on a document, but I know that is limited in what I can do with it.

Does anyone have an idea of what happened and what to do? I would appreciate it very much.

Hello all!

I finished building a custom desktop back in February and I recently upgraded it with a 64 GB SanDisk SSD. I really truly love those boot times.

Now onto the real question: When I try to install Microsoft Office 2010, it gives me an error that it can't access a certain folder, and it cancels the installation. When I try to install Skype, it's giving me a "Warning 1909" (not having access to place shortcut.ink even though i see it on the desktop), a "Error 1609" and an "Error 2303". I have full admin privileges and installing on the one and only account on the desktop. The SSD isn't even half full, and no matter whether I try to install on my secondary HDD or on the main SSD - same things happen.

I'll get the exact errors for Office 2010 when I can - I've got school finals coming up.

Thank you all so much in advance for helping me.

Well, I finally broke down and went from W2K Pro to XP Pro on my new build. Almost all my apps have installed just fine but two that I need will not. They are NetObjects Fusion 7 and Adobe Elements 2.0. Both are fairly new, around 2002 or 3 releases and both are rated for XP but once I launch the setup.exe the hourglass shows for about 5 seconds and then goes back to the standard cursor. I checked the Task Manager and in both cases setup.exe is loaded and running and I have to End Process to try the setup again but the same thing happens each time to both apps. They both installed fine and I've been using them for years on my W2K Pro machine.

It seems odd that these two (and maybe more as I haven't tried to load all my programs yet) would hang this way. Neither gets as far as the splash screen or even indicates that it's actually trying to install other than the hourglass.

Any ideas?

PS: I have all service packs, fixes, security patches, etc., for XP Pro. I've installed all of Office 2003 and all updates with no problem. I have Acrobat Professional 6x installed and running fine and it's older than NetObjects so

I have a new problem, or at least new to me. My computer was shutdown without my knowledge, and all the peripherals disconnected and the entire unit set in the floor. (My wife moved out, and took the desk as well as her USB hard drive.) Now, when I booted it up, it keeps trying to install programs that are already there. When I tell it to cancel the installation, it just does it again. It keeps repeating this process for 6 or 7 tries, then quits for a few minutes. After a few minutes pass, it does it again. I've done a virus scan with AVG, scanned it with Spybot S&D, and nothing shows up. I've tried a system restore, but it will not restore to any point before today.

Any ideas how to fix this? I'm getting desperate!!

First things - boot an OS from USB is a no-no.

What I want is some sort of OS or package that I can put on my USB pen to allow me to install programs on said pen, and run them, just as one would install and run them from a hard drive.

For example, say I have Adobe Fireworks CS3 and I want to use it on a PC without it, but I don't want to install it on the PC. Instead I'll install it on my USB pen, and run it from the USB pen on the other PC.

I've got the same sort of thing set up with my computer - Vista on the main HDD, and XP on the second. I've installed programs on the XP hard drive and can run them when I'm in Vista. I want to be able to do the same, but with a USB pen instead of the second hard drive.

The reason I ask - there are programs I have that I'd like to run at school, but I obviously can't install them on the school system. I've also got a University Interview coming up (Jan 30th), and I'd love to show off some of the things I've done... which typically have to be in programs that regular PCs haven't got installed (Google SketchUp, for instance).

Anyone got any ideas? I've tried DamnSmallLinux but the computer needs to boot from USB to run it. I've also thought about Emulators such as Windows CE (http://blogs.msdn.com/smakofsky/archive/2004/12/20/328001.aspx) but I won't be able to run them at school.

In 2006 I found a nice package that contained lots of programs that ran on a USB, but... Read more

I am running XP home SP2. I have run disc clean, registry mechanic, ASquared free, Adaware, AV. I cannot install any games or programs. When I click on RUN nothing happens. I did have the same problem a while ago and MS suggested I uninstall SP3 which I did and the problem went away for a while. It doesn't matter if I use IE or Mozilla to download. Please see attached hijack scan. Thanking you in advance for your help.

I tried to send this logfile as an attachment but clicking on attachment didn't work????

A:Solved: can't install programs

When you download a program with the intent of installing it, you want to select "Save" and not "Run". Create a folder right on your desktop and name it Downloads (or whatever you want to name it). Choose "Save" and direct all your downloads to be saved in that folder. You can then download multiple files and then install them at your discretion.

If your computer has XP SP2 installed and has been kept up with the 100+ critical updates since it's release about 4 years ago, installing the SP3 upgrade isn't required.

If your computer has an AMD processor and not an Intel processor, I would advise against installing the SP3 upgrade because of the potential problem of a continuous reboot.

You admit to having used PC Tools Registry Mechanic, so it wouldn't surprise me if its overly-aggressive action of removing registry entries(invalid ones and valid ones) has rendered some of your programs unusable.

Registry cleaners are dangerous, so don't use them.

Thank you for allowing me to join.
I found you because I was following a thread: “How do I get programs from the Old Windows File into my new Win 7 Home Premium installation Programs File?”, but before it could be answered on this forum, the questioner posted that she “had solved the problem” and the thread ended.
Please tell ME how to do it, remembering that I am NOT a “computer guy” (my field was biology).
NOTE: the folks at Microsoft, who said that the Windows Update problem I had with Vista could only be solved by installing Windows 7, told me AFTER I had followed their advice and installed Win 7, that I would now have to re-install any old programs from their original discs! This in spite of the fact that the programs ARE on my machine, but in a file called Windows.old. Now some of these programs really ARE are old (not as old as me, but Photoshop 7, the one I need most, is from 2002) and because I have moved several times since originally installing it several computers and operating systems ago, the original discs are long gone. But all of those old programs that are in the Windows.old file on my machine ARE compatible with Win 7 (according to the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor that I used).
So what can I do?
And thanks very much for any help that you can give.

I have a shiny new install of XP professional. I reformatted the drive because I was having all kinds of issues. I installed SP3 as an update, and it tore up the hard disk pretty badly, so I bought a copy of XP Pro that had SP3 with it, so it would install all as one.

it installed like a dream. The SP3 as an update crashed about four times during install.

At any rate, I was reinstalling my software, and such, when it wanted to update. so I stopped installing my software, and let it login to Microsoft and get the files it wanted. It downloaded, and installed 64 updates.

Now, I can't install my software. It seems that all of a sudden, I am unable to install any Adobe software. Photo shop, Acrobat, nothing. Strike that, I was able to install Dream weaver. What it does is nothing. I click on setup, and I see the working icon for about 10 seconds, the CD whirs, and the hard disk light flashes a few times, then nothing. When I call up task manager, it shows setup.exe as running. It's acting like a TSR. I have three other XP SP3 systems, and the installer comes up on all three.

Another problem I am having is it keeps disconnecting my wireless connection from the router every 10 minutes, and the only way to get a connection back is to repair it. Granted it only takes a few seconds, but it can't do it on it's own, it just says unable to connect to JimBo (my SSID, Imagine that ). When I right click the wireless icon,. and select repair, three seconds later,... Read more

I just recently had three new upgrades put on my computer: Vista, IE 7, and MS Office Standard 2007. Since these upgrades, I have tried to install several programs, and each time I get the same error message...
"This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

I originally thought it was a problem with Adobe, because I first got the message when I tried to install Acrobat Reader. Since then, I have tried to install Java and an e-book application and recieved the same error message. (I did install Flash player and Picasa with no problems.)

A friend suggested the following solution, but it did not help:

1. Go to this weblink to download and install this program. http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe

Choose Start > all Programs > Windows Installer CleanUp to start the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Select the previous version of Adobe which should be the first selection and click remove.(screenshot below)
Try installing acrobat reader again.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

On a Windows 7 machine, I am unable to install any updates, drivers, or programs because there is something that hasn't finished installing. I've looked all over and can't seem to figure out what is installing.

I've done two system restores back to 13 March but cannot go further back than that.

Any ideas? Thanks for your help.

A:[SOLVED] How do I get programs to auto install on a different drive

You can change the default directory by editing a registry key:

1. Go to Start -> Run
2. Type regedit
3. Navigate to the following key:
4. Find the entry ProgramFilesDir
5. Default value (under the Data column) of this entry should be C:\Program Files. Right click ProgramFilesDir, select Modify, and enter the path you want.

This should work on x86 versions of XP, Vista, and 7. x64 bit versions of 7 might be trickier.
