Recovery says my drive is locked - how to unlock?

Q: Recovery says my drive is locked - how to unlock?

I have an Asus T300LA Transformer with Win8.1. My keyboard stopped working so wanted to use the recovery utility, but when I get there it says my hard drive is locked and to unlock it. How do I do that?

Preferred Solution: Recovery says my drive is locked - how to unlock?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Recovery says my drive is locked - how to unlock?

Are you using Encryption like TrueCrypt? If so, maybe you need to turn it of and decrypt the drive first?

I bought a new Samsung SSD with self-encrypting capabilities. In the HP Bios/settings, I had the possibility to put a "drive lock" on the disk (I think it's OPAL). I installed an OS, worked for a couple of weeks, everything went fine. During startup, I always had to enter a password to unlock the drive, which is exactly what I wanted. Today, I booted the notebook again, this time I maybe mistyped the password two times, now the drive is locked. I do have the correct password here, but I can't find an option within the BIOS to unlock the drive. No matter where I click within the BIOS, it always tell's me "Drive is Locked". Now, how can I *unlock* the drive when I have the correct password?I tried:  * Security -> DriveLock -> "Set DriveLock Password" -> Error: Drive is Locked  * Security -> DriveLock -> disable "DriveLock password on restart" -> has no effect Help

Hey,

Just want to start off with saying I have read another similar post on this site which can be found here: [SOLVED] Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

It was promising as the poster was having the exact same errors as me fro the people recommending fixes as me but in the end it turned out he jut had a faulty piece of software. This is what I have done so fa an had no luck with.

I was running windows 10 but im currently running it from a USB stick.

So I was able to stick a memory stick in my PC hoping to reinstall windows on my second hard dive, but I noticed that my first hard drive wasn't dead after all as it wasn't letting me re format hard drive #2 for what ever reasons so I started browsing the tools.

I have gone through countless forums and tried all of this:

A lot of the forums recommended doing these commands, I got to the last one and it always said this:

I also tried resetting my PC. When I choose to reset my PC but keep the files it says

And with deletng the files

Ive also tried running chkdsk C: /f /r /x and the result was

Though I was able to browse through all the folders on my disk

The latest downloaded thing on the machine was a game, otherwise nothing before that.

Massive thanks in advance,
Josh

After the power strip was turned off by my 5 year old granddaughter my computer won't boot. It tries to repair itself but fails. I have tried tapping F12 to get to the boot menu but everything I have tried has failed. I don't have a recovery disk. Lesson learned there. I had the computer diagnose the startup and it found no problems.

I have tried to reset it but I get a message that says, "A required drive partition is missing."

If I try to refresh it says, "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again."

It has a Seagate hard drive #ST500DM002.

Can anybody tell me how to unlock the drive or anything else that would help? My computer skills are very limited.

Thanks, Danny

Dear Sir/Madam,

I encrypted my laptop system drive using Bitlocker. I remembered the password but forgot to backup the Recovery Key.

Usually, the system will be bootup without asking for the Bitlocker password or Recovery key. But one day, when booting up the sytem, the "BitLocker recovery" blue screen pop up to ask for Bitlocker Recovery Key.

I forgot to backup the Recovery Key. But I remembered the password. I also connected the harddisk of this laptop to other PC, and tried to unlock the hard disk using Bitlocker password. But there is no password option to unlock the hard disk.

Is it possible to unlock the drive using Bitlocker password?

Thank you.

Used Lenovo OS recovery DVD's for Win8.1 to setup machine (old system crashed and couldn't be recovered) back to factory default. Once in Windows, used the Recovery tool (Control Panel -> Recovery) to create a recovery USB drive. Followed instructions from https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht080887 and created a recovery USB drive. I then wanted to test this drive before I loaded all my applications and again followed the instructions in that article to "reset pc" using the USB drive. It appeared to reset the pc (I watched it go from 0% up to just about 100%) and then it rebooted. After reboot, it went right back into the USB recovery drive. I removed the USB drive and rebooted it again, and got a "no operating system..." error. When I insert the USB recovery drive back in and use the utility, it tells me the drive is locked. This tells me it didn't "reset pc" like it was supposed to do, but I followed everything to a "t". Any suggestions?

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Western Digital WD My Passport 2 TB external hard drive
Western Digital's security software allows a password to be set on the external drive, encrypting it. When the drive is connected to a PC, a virtual CD (VCD) partition runs (via autorun) an unlocker utility WD Drive Unlock.exe, that allows password entry.
When I connect the locked drive to a Windows 7 PC (that does not have any WD software installed), the autoun popup appears and I select "Run WD Drive Unlock.exe". At that point, User Account Control (UAC) elevation prompt appears, requiring Administrator
password in order to continue.
WD Drive Unlock then lets me enter password.
Because of UAC elevation, the unlocker can be used only by an Administrator user or by a standard user account who knows the Administrator password.

QUESTION
Is UAC elevation prompt truly necessary?
Is it appearing because Western Digital hasn't coded the unlocker exe correctly, or would any such utility require UAC elevation?

I'd like to find a way that a standard user account can run the unlocker to enter passsword and access the external drive, without having to know the Windows Admin password.

Here I have my problem.
This threads title message appears during boot up. There is also "cmos checksum error - defaults loaded", because I cleared bios. If I don't plug in the keyboard, "keyboard error or no keyboard present" message appers too. I predict this is not keyboard issued problem neither cmos. Once has computer booted properly, so I was able to configure bios settings, but I did not connect hd preventing multiple starting and stopping. I did reset to computer twice or three time checking if everything is ok (there obviously "disk boot failure ..." message showed up at the end of bios bootup proces). Then I turned off computer, connected hd ide cable and power and started it again. Titled message was written out again. I am confused, because I'm sure I don't have keylock switch. There is a keylock conector, but it is disconnected.
Problem had already appeared few years ago.
Please help solving this problem. Any suggestion would be good. Thank You.

A:keyboard is locked out - unlock the key

Checksum error is generally an indication that the CMOS battery is flat. It's the thumbnail sized watch-type battery on the motherboard. As far as your keyboard is concerned, what your problem is likely to be is a key is stuck on your keyboard and it's simply the fact that startup has got further that it's telling you this. Please try another keyboard before worrying about more expensive devices. I know it seems simple and mundane, but it's always a good idea to start troubleshooting from the bottom up.

Good luck.

Hi

I have a server 2008 Domain Controller and 35 Windows7 desktops. If a user was to lock a desktop, is the only way to unlock to "switch user" and start task manager to disconnect a user?

Used to be with a XP locked desktop in a domain, you could simply CTRL-ALT-DEL and log over a user with a "As you sure you want to logout htis user" message.

Any other setting, GPO, local settings to change that?

Thanks

B.

A:Win7 Locked Desktop and Unlock Options

That is because xp in domain environment can only have 1 user logged on at a time. So anyone logging in will prompt to kick the user out.

In vista and 7 yes if a user is logged on and someone switches user, the only way to log them off is to have the user do it, restart the pc, or task manager disconnect.

Hey All,

Recently my company provided me with a Windows 10 SOE image as part of a UAT. The image includes Symantec Endpoint Encryption which utilizes Bitlocker for encryption.

I went through all of the motions with the C:\ drive to be encrypted and even printed the recovery key. Well, at some point I plugged in a few My Passport USB drives and they became locked by Bitlocker To Go. Everytime I try to unlock or click on these drives it asks for the 48-bit key which I don't have because I never was prompted to encrypt/lock these drives.

IT says that there are no keys stored on the servers for these USB drives and suggested that this would be a "local" encryption. However, they also stated that they wouldn't be encrypted unless I was prompted about it. So, there's this mystery about how these USB drives came to be locked.

Hi folks - I have been sent an application form in Word which when printed out tends to lose some text in the pre-set fields. I wanted to increase the row heights to see if I could get all the text printing out, but the pre-set fields (i.e. fields with information and headings supplied as part of the form) cannot be selected for editing - all options are greyed out. Even "Edit/Select All" appears to be disabled.

Is this form locked in some way so it can't be edited? I did a very preliminary google search which suggests that documents can be locked in this way, and I can see the advantages for form submissions by email - but is there a way to solve the printing problem so I can get a hard copy printed out without missing text?

Many thanks for any help

I had a simple question about Windows 7 Enterprise. I am a computer technician in a corporation serviceing 7000+ PC's. In the past (on Windows XP Professional) when a user would lock the computer we as administrators could unlock the computer and
force the log off of the user. Can this feature or one similar be applied In Windows 7 Enterprise if Fast User switching is turned off?

HP Laptop came hard-coded with the function keys locked to some stupid things. instead of fn+f1 to get help its just f1 to get help. theres no lock/unlock button either. the fn+f1 button gives me the opposite of what it should do. if i want to fullscreen (f11) i cant actually hit f11 i have to hit fn+f11, or else ill hit the "next media file" button. how do i change/disable/remove this? its been like this since i got it day one, two years ago.

Hi, You can change the default action as follows. Shut down the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Bios option ( f10 ), then make the change shown in the document on the following link. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02035108&DocLang=en&docLocale=en_US&... Regards, DP-K

Hi,I got an HP system recovery USB which turned out to be useless at fixing my problem so thought I would use it for other things but it is locked somehow.I have tried various utils for formatting etc. and altered win 10 regestry settings but still can't copy files onto it, though one of them does appear to have wiped the HP software off it.Would anyone have any ideas about this?I have opened the casing but don't see any sign of a physical switch and am not averse to attacking it with a soldering iron at this stage if there is any way to do it like that.

Just what have you done to the device? If you ordered it from HP, you could have returned it as non-working after posting here that you were having a problem with it. If you have opened it, then you have probably broken it to the extent that HP will not replace it without cost. So what exactly are you after at this point? We cannot help you without a description of a problem and identification of your HP notebook and operating system.

I tried to guess and enter several log in passwords including  the word DELL and none of them worked. I didn't want to enter too many wrong passwords because I didn't know if the system would lock me out. Can anyone help me by pass the BIOS log in password or some how disable it ? Thank You in advance.
