Error 'Semaphore Timout Period Expired'

Q: Error 'Semaphore Timout Period Expired'

I have x1 Desktop and x1 Laptop.
They are both on Win XP Pro and are fully updated.
I have always networked them using Cat5 cables and an active hub and had a shared Internet connection on the Desktop and had no massive problems.

one day recently I plugged in the Laptop and turned it on. Not only could I not connect to the net but neither PC could access the other.

I have run the Network setup wizard on the Desktop and then on the Laptop and managed to mess with things so the ICS is now working again. But neither PC can see the other.

I get the error message:

\\Desktop is not accessible. (sometimes this part says: 'MSHome is not accessible')

You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found. (sometimes this part says: 'the semaphore timeout period has expired' or 'The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available')

There is only one user on each PC, ME.

I have opened command prompt and ran ipconfig and then ran 'ping'. Both PC's can ping each other with no problems but I can still not access files on each PC. I HAVE shared folders on both and they should be seen.

Preferred Solution: Error 'Semaphore Timout Period Expired'

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Ady,

Thanks for your post!

This issue may be a little complex and require some steps to troubleshoot:

1.    Update the driver of wireless network adapters in both of your computers.
2.    Temporarily disable all the firewalls and anti-virus applications, then check the issue again.
3.    To exclude the factors from other services and applications, do a clean boot to check the issue and perform Step 4.(KB929135) How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vistahttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;929135
4.    With clean boot, try to apply the hotfixes contained in the following KB articles:(KB932045) Error message when you use a network connection to copy a large file from one Windows Vista-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer: "The connection has been lost"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932045(KB932063) Several problems occur on a Windows Vista-based computer when you work in a wireless network environment
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;932063
If problem still persists after steps above, this issue is very possibly due to network devices or configurations, please let me know:

1.    Whether this problem occurs in wired network?
2.    If strengthening the network signals, the problem can be changed?
3.    What size of files will lead to this error.
4.    Does this error terminate the copy process?

hello again...

dang this thing is a pain!!

new issue today, trying to save a tiny .rtf file to external USB drive, and get "semaphore timeout period has expired" message and have to save to local drive instead. also get the message if i drag and drop into the desired location.

perhaps related to the issue i occasionally have: the machine loses connection to the external drive and either the folder shows empty (it's not!) or doesn't show as even being connected. little blue light on the drive will sometimes go out, sometimes not, but still no access...

EDIT: i have two verbatim USB drive attached... one or the other of them will occasional disappear from This PC and when i look at device manager there is an error on that drive. i disconnect and reconnect and the drives show up and the error in device manger goes away... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why this happens. when it does and i try to save something to the drive, that's when i get the "semaphore timeout period has expired"

i have tried to update drivers using windows search online and it always says i have the best drivers loaded....

the drives have been checked for errors and windows reports none... there is still quite a bit of available space on them (80+ gigs on each) and when they are connected and live, i can access files with no problem... it just decides to seemingly drop the drive randomly...

thanks for any help...

When deleting a file from a local drive, that I have permissions to the local folder on, I'm getting the Semaphore timeout period has expired error.

I've tried to make it as simple as possible for the system, after doing a clean boot, and it still failing, I'm currently in safe mode, without networking, and am still seeing the error.  Anybody have a suggestion or work around?  Files in other
folders are not having this issue.

I maintain some software that makes a tcp socket connection to a different piece of software and sends data back and forth (pretty basic stuff there). We use boost asio to handle reading and writing of data over the socket connection. We have a client that
has deployed this software on Windows7. The client has been having issues with our software not being able to maintain a reliable socket connection. One thing I have noticed is that quite often the networking callback are receiving the error: The semaphore
timeout period has expired.

This error is not coming from anywhere in our code (or the boost code). I've done some research on it and I found a Microsoft Knowledge base article on this error for Windows XP (support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/325487). I've seen a few people ask questions about
this error on Windows7, but they're all in regards to moving files to different drives, nothing regarding network connections.

What does this error mean in regards to Windows7? Does the knowledge base article I mentioned still apply to Windows7?

Greetings,

My environment is: Win'7, Visual Studio 2010, C#

There is another message on these forums with almost exactly the same title. It's closed, so I couldn't post there.

I'm getting that exact same response from Win'7 in a try /catch scheme.

i.e., "...The semaphore timeout period has expired..."

I am quite confident that the serial port is really there, as he will open and will transfer data from time to time.

It's the whims of the hardware that have me so confused.

The exact same code worked perfectly last night. In fact, it has worked for weeks.

The statement which I believe is causing the error is...
TheUsersChosenSerialPort.Open();

Much like the other thread mentioned, the port is a BlueTooth connector, and Win'7 is reporting him okay, and so on.

I welcome responses from those with useful knowledge on this topic.

Is this a Linksys Router?

Wired or WIFI?

Are you using an Internet Security Suite or ZoneAlarm?
This may also be thr problem....
This can happen when the total path length of the source file
and the total path length of the destination file are greater than a given
value, 128 I believe. When this occures in windows, it results in a Path
Too Deep error.

So I did a search and found nothing definitive regarding this particular error in my application.

I have a Dell laptop with an i7 processor, an SSD drive and 8g of ram, running Win7 Pro 64 bit.

I put a 128G micro sd card into the sd card adapter and slapped into the slot. When I try to move files to the card, I get the error.

I formatted the card just for grins. It won't format NTFS, but it did format exFat @ default allocation unit size.

The only file that didn't copy was one that's 21 megs in size. Everything else was smaller and copied over fine.

Donno what to do from here. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi, I use Windows XP Pro and I am getting this error message in the system event log everytime I log in. Now I only get one, but just recently there are like 3 or 4 in a row many times during the initial log in to the internet network.

I have tried to search everywhere and google and yahoo for an answer but never was able to get a clear solution.

Luckily, I am able to get online just fine but the idea of this showing up constantly bothers me. It was fine, for about 4 months it stopped showing up after I did no changes to my system but its now back.

Also for a while I was getting something about user cancelled something but I have not seen that in a long time.

I tried to unplug the modem and cables to reset the IP , but that doesnt help. Also not that my service uses a Dynamic IP and I cant switch to static IP.

Good Morning All,

I am having issues installing Windows updates, they have been failing upon install for the past 3-4 months.  I get the error code 80070079, "The Semaphore timeout has expired".  So I tried backing up my data to just wipe it and reload the OS, the backup fails as well, same error message.  Then I tried moving files manually to an external drive and that as well timeouts on the larger files.  I have searched the Internet and it many people seem to have this issue and it relates to the network adapter, but I am not trying to do anything over the network (Updates are already downloaded just waiting to install), so I feel it is something else.  Does anyone know of a fix or possible solution?  I searched semaphore through the registry and there are a lot of entries, but not sure if i need to change any of them or not?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Machine is a Dell Optiplex 780, Windows 7 32-Bit, 4GB Ram, 800GB HDD, Broadcomm Network Adapter.

Thanks,

Dear Community,
My G: Drive has one or multiple corrupt (dirty) files on it. Normally you can trouble shoot the problem, but this isn't working.
Going more indepth to solve the problem I tried the following command: CHKNTFS /X G: in CMD (Command Prompt).

This initally seemes to work but after some time it gives the following error:
"the specified i/o operation on hs was not completed before the time-out period expired"

Then you have 3 options, to cancel, try again or continue. Either way it's not solving the problem, which is to make my G: drive workable again.
Who can help me with this? I've added some screenshots the steps and errors i'm encountering.
Thanks in advance,
Martin

As I had a spare copy of Win 7 (upgrade version)

I decided to configure a new Hard Drive (Which I have on swappable pull out trays)

So to make sure there were no bugs or glitches, this is what I did.

(1) Formatted the Drive

(2) Clean Install of Win XP

(3) Clean Install of Win 7 (To Upgrade XP to Win 7)

(4) Using an Iso Disk I burned I then installed a free upgrade to Win 10 (which was accepted and registered by MS)

Everything was fine except for one thing.

When I try and use MS Edge, I get a banner on the Screen which says 'This App can't open, your trial period for this App has now expired.

Visit the Windows Store to purchase the Full App

Then there is a Link to go to the Store but there is no sign of an App for MS Edge!

I don't understand what's going on here, so need some advice what to do.

I've still got Edge on this Hard Drive but not on this other New Drive.

Try this that I found it may work for you as I have had no trouble at all
***YOU MUST HAVE THE WINDOWS FIREWALL SERVICE RUNNING FOR THIS TO WORK***

1. Find C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe
2. Right-click and Run as Administrator
3. Copy this line:

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

4. Right-click in the Powershell window to Paste and then press Enter.
5. There is no need to restart. The fix should implement right away.

If you have previously disabled Windows Firewall or do not have it running, the above steps will result in errors. Use the steps below to enable Windows Firewall and the reverse if you wish to turn it off again afterwards.

1. Right-click the Start button -> Click Run
2. Type Services.msc and press Enter
3. Scroll down to find Windows Firewall
4. Right-click then click Properties
5. Under Startup Type dropdown -> Select Manual. Click Apply
6. In the top left portion of the Services Window, Click Start this service.
7. Now follow the steps in the first section, and it should work.

These steps worked for this guy
They have no guarantee to work for you
Also worked for the other person as well.

Hello, I just wanted to post a solved issue with a Z440 and a recently occurring 928 Fatal Error. I believe the problem was the small power plug going into my AMD W7100 Video Card from the power supply. It had not been fully plugged in properly from the factory and was loose. It popped right off when I touched it. It was making enough of a connection for the card to work but when the card needed to pull some power while running a video demanding program. It caused the computer to crash. Thanks to whoever assembled my machine at HP. QA needs to check on this persons work. I would be happy to provide my machine info if somebody wants to check it out. The connector on one of my SSD's is bent as well. It looks like someone pushed too hard on it when it was plugged in. The second SSD plug looks fine. The tab on my video card that slides into the chassis where the card outputs are located was all bent up as well. This simple little oversite caused all my frustrations below if you want to read on! This problem may be caused by a software issue but if you tried updating everything and the other suggestions you find don't work, then maybe this will help! Look at potential hardware issues like loose connections on your boards. Possibly weak power supply. You may have a faulty card or faulty slot on the mother board. Try a different slot if available. I purchased my Z440 from HP in September of 2016 for the purpose of running my business and practicing CADD. My issues started ... Read more

Welcome to TSF!!!

Hi,

I have a question to start this off with. Is your network problem with a lot of sites, or is it just a few? How is your internet connections is it staying connected when you are having these problems or does it cut out on you? Last what browser are you using, I would hope that it is FF, and what version?

Cheers!

I keep getting these Gateway Timeout's on various websites, at different times. At the moment, IMDB.com is acting up. I click on a website, or a link within the site and I get one of those white error pages and can't access the site.

The page says:

Gateway Timeout
The following error occurred:

Code:

Hello, i've just built a brand new computer. Everything has been working fine except the web browser has been acting weird. I use google chrome, which is updated. Everytime I start my computer upon sleep mode and start up the browser, it reads that it cannot find the webpage "webpage has expired" or "Oops, Google Chrome could not find www.*****.com". So what I do is keep reloading the webpage for 2-5 minutes and eventually the webpage will load. From there on, if I continue browsing, it will work just fine besides being slower than usual. If I leave for an hour and come back, the same bullcrap happens. AVG didn't find any virus, I ran AVG PC tuneup to clean it up a little. I tried everything, so I am starting to think it may be a Spy Ware that AVG can't find.... Should i send a Hijackthis log?

Thanks forum

A:"webpage has expired" error

Is it just websites or your actual network that disconnects?
If its the network, check in the adapter settings to see if its set to "allows windows to turn off this device to save power". If that is ticked, untick it and you should be ok

Hi,Please don't run combofix without supervision of an expert in Malware Removal. You should create a new post on the Am I infected? What do I do? section of the forum describing your problem the best you can.Another option is to create a post on the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section where you will be helped by a Malware Expert. Before you start on there please read Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help.

Hello Everyone,
I have an on going ATA deployment, where the customer wants to know, the possibility of having the logs / event retained for 1 year and an approximate idea on the impact of storage and any limitations for MongoDB.
As per the ATA sizing tool and article the requirement of ATA center falls in the below specification.

Packets per second from all DCs

CPU (cores*)

Memory (GB)

Database storage per day (GB)

Database storage per month (GB)

IOPS**

400,000

12

96

120

3,600

2,000 (2,500)

So we have a approx. storage requirement of 3.6 TB per month, so how long are the logs/event on ATA center kept by default and can we change the retention period for the same.
Thank you,

Regards,
Iqbal Johar

We have a very important client who when they attempt to mail a user on our domain irregularly get's bounce backs with the message:

#550 4.4.7 QUEUE.Expired; message expired ##

The client in question does not appear to have issues mailing anyone else on our domain or any other. I receive all E-mail they send to me. The user here also has no other issues with his mail. As I said, the issue occurs irregularly: some days it's fine, others it's not.

Does anyone know if this is an issue our end or theirs please?

A:550 4.4.7 QUEUE.Expired; message expired

I did a Google search for 550 4.4.7 QUEUE.Expired and most of the found pages seem to suggest the problem is most likely with Microsoft Exchange Server on the sending end.

Our network admin ran some tests once we received the first ticket in connection with outgoing mail and has deduced that the recipient has our mail blocked. I have a Dell XPS 9360.
When the battery is low, i.e. below 25%, the laptop will go to sleep after about 2 minutes of inactivity.
My problem is, this behaviour cannot be changed. I have edited the "go to sleep after" in the Windows power settings but it does not respect this setting. I have deleted the Dell power profile, created a new power profile, reset it to default, yet still the laptop will not respect the setting I put in there.
This means the laptop is always going to sleep after a very short period, i.e. if I have a quick conversation with someone, and it then takes about 2-3 minutes to wake and reconnect to wifi. Infuriating. Is there a fix? If not, the laptop is getting close to finding itself on eBay. Missing my MacBook now.

So there is a manual on/off for the keyboard backlight, but surprisingly, if it's set to ON it will stay on even after the screen goes off. This just seems plain dumb. I also think it should have a timer (preferably adjustable), so that it can be set to turn off after a while even if the screen is still on (for example, watching a movie). I think HP should implement this in a future update, as these are the kind of details that separate a good device from a great device (i.e. Apple).  But for the time being, is there even an app or something that can control this? Thanks

If you look at the actual power panel, there are some critical battery thresholds. Maybe one of those would help.
My system, 9365, does not really sleep but uses the Modern or Connected Standby process.  I am not certain even that works correctly, but your system may not have that.

I have a pretty simple page currently that has a SQL Source that's has the following query:

Code:
SELECT DialID, company, DBAname, transferred, transferred_date, salesagent, transferred_to

ORDER BY transferred_date, salesagent
When I attempt to load my .aspx page, I get the below error 95% of the time although occassionally it successfully loads.

Most of your already know where this is going... my laptop's been running fine until a few weeks ago it tipped over (it was on the floor leaned against the night stand) and the "Attempt to reset the display adapter and recover from a timeout failed" BSOD started happening. I cannot boot into regular windows but safe mode works fine. (Also regular windows works but in standard VGA mode)

I doubt any permanent physical damage was done for a few reasons:
1. It was hardly a fall that anyone would expect to damage anything
2. When I boot into safe mode, the Device Manager recognizes my GPU with no yellow exclamation mark (properties say that device status is unavailable in safe mode, presumably since SM does not load display drivers)
3. I doubt the BSOD would reference a driver file if there was physical damage
4. I took the card out and looked.

I booted into safe mode with networking and did some research and I found that this is a fairly common problem, yet very few people seem to find a definitive answer. After trying everyone's suggestions to no avail, I decided that the fall caused the heatsink to separate from the GPU and caused it to overheat (thus it was not responding to a reset).

So I tore my laptop open and removed the video card. There's no visible physical damage. So I took the leftover thermal paste and did my best to reseat the heatsink. (in iraq now so no radio shack ) Well it actually improved. I ceased getting the BSOD and I was actually able to boot ... Read more

Hello i am new here. My problem is, everytime i right click on a file some error box appears, saying :

"You temporary key has expired. If you believe this message is in error, please contact the programs author." i can either click cancel or click Ok. Theres nothing on the message about what program it belongs to and i dont know which program couses this.

When i click Ok, another box appears asking me a username and a serial key, with buttons ok, cancel, and Buy Now! Accessing my right click menu is only avalible by clicking cancel anyway... When i click Buy Now button it takes me to www.backup2001.com. But i have never downloaded anything from here or any backup programs for the matter. I searched my hard disk and registiry files the words "backup2001" and "sedo" (the company name) but no result. I have deleted like 90% of the programs on my computer (including winrar, thought it might couse the problem) i deleted everything suspicous with RegCleaner program and i did virus scans with 3 diffrent programs (panda, avg and norton) and had run scans with spyware programs, but its still there.

i copy pasted the error on google. It seems that other people recieve the exact message with more than one program, but they all know which program it belongs to and it doesnt happen to them on every file. When i right click My Copmuter the error wont show but any other regular file it happens.

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
