Q: Solved: Saving NEED HELP - copying jpeg files result in quicktime files - how to stop

I have a PC with Windows XP SP2. Also have an IPOD and its software loaded on the computer.

When I reansfer files from my Nikon camera SD card (they start as jpeg files), the automatically are converted to Quicktime files.

I have no problem opening them with MS Office Picture Manager or picture viewer.

Problem is when I want to share with friends and email them and they cannot open them.

How do I stop my computer from changing file extensions (type) when I copy jpegs to my hard drive.

If I can find out how to stop the changes, then I need to go and convert extsting files back to jpeg (several years of pictures).

HELP!!!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried to search before asking but every time I search "copy files to cd" or "save files to cd" I get an error because it says my search keywords were below 4 characters.

I'm using XP Home and want to be able to save files created in WordPad straight to a CD.

Right now I'm:
1. Saving the file in My Documents.
2. Opening My Computer
3. Navigating to the file I want to copy. Then, under File and Folder Tasks, clicking Copy this file.
4. In the Copy Items dialog box, clicking the CD drive and then Copy.
5. In My Computer, double-clicking the CD drive.
6. Under CD Writing Tasks, clicking Write these files to CD.

Is there a faster way to do this using a limited account?

A:Copying/saving Files To Cd

if you are asking if you can directly save to cdrom ie 'burn to cd' I don't one can but it would be simplier just to dragdrop between two open folders on your desktop 'my documents' and 'cdrom drive' as in

frist put my 'document folder' icon on desktop

runbox command
- press keyboard buttons: winkey + r
- paste this in slot: desk.cpl @0,0
- press: enter
- click button: customise desktop
(desktop window opens)
- click box: my documents
(just under 'desktop icons in blue)
- click: OK
(closes window)
- click: apply
- click: OK

then make a desktop shortcut to cdrom drive
- press keyboard button: winkey + e
- click to highlight: cdromdrive
- dragdrop cdromdrive to desktop
(that chreates the shortcut on desktop)

I need help. I'm a fairly experienced computer user. I currently own a Dell laptop (got it cheap, I'm a student). I already had XP Home installed on it. However, I am now trying to install XP Professional SP2. I chose to do a fresh install rather than upgrading (may have been my first mistake, but there's no going back now). With the disk in the drive it rebooted, initialized, and began the installation process. I chose to install on the same partition as XP Home (since it was the only one available), opting to over-write/delete the current installation. The installer began copying the necessary files, but about 1/3 of the way through it stopped being able to copy any of the files. Even if I skipped one, the next wouldn't be able to copy either. I've tried restarting the process and everything. And now neither OS will load.

Not being an expert, I'd think it's because it filled that partition and can't copy any more new files on to it. But if this is the case, why did this happen? And is there any way to resolve it? Or if that's not the case, does anybody know what the issue is?

If you need any more info from me or have any questions, please feel free to ask. I'll be online all night to troubleshoot this. And to clear up any confusion, I'm currently using a different laptop (not my own) to be on here right now. Thank you in advance to anybody who can help me out.

A:Replacing XP Home with XP Pro: Files stop copying

No I don't think this is a case of your hardrive partition being "full". It was overwriting, right ?

For the sake of discussion, how large is the partition, and how much free space was on it prior to the new install. I think XP would have warned you if space was an issue anyways.

My guess is that you have one or more of the common causes:

Malware
Hard Drive errors
Dirty Installation CD
defective CD-ROM drive

Did you prep the drive prior to the new install ?

This has happened to me on at least three very different computers (all running windows XP, all updates and patches) with several different DVD from different sources (most “verified” when written) so it must be something in the OS or a common feature of drivers and not particular failure on a single system. My guess is that most people don’t encounter this problem because most people don’t routinely attempt to copy gigabytes of data from data DVD’s in one operation.

I will open a data DVD and attempt to copy all 5 gig of data (or a sizeable chunk of it) to folder on the hard drive. The DVD will spin and the “Copying” window will open and will show progress for several minutes. Then, the DVD will spin down and stop. The “Copying” progress bar will be somewhere on the middle and the Copying window will remain open but no more copying takes place. If I am very patient and do nothing for several minutes (3-5 min) the DVD MAY spin up again and copying may resume (or it may not and will simply remain “stuck”).

This only happens when I am copying a large chunk of data. If the DVD data is broken into say 20 folders and I copy each folder individually, then it probably won’t occur.

I’ve recently noticed that this is more likely to happen when the copy operation is overwriting an existing folder.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior or have any clue?

My impression is that the DVD is delivering data faster that it can be written to disk (the antivirus pro... Read more

Welcome to the Seven Forums.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Internet Options
Once the Window named Internet Properties comes up
...select the tab named General
(if it is not already selected)
...look for the section named Browsing History
...click on the button named Delete...

A new window named Delete Browsing History should popup. Be sure that there is a check mark by the items that you want to delete & then press the button named Delete. Another window should popup showing info on what is being deleted.

After the deletions complete...
...return to the section named Browsing History
...click on the button named Settings...
...reduce the value of Disk space to use to 8MB.
...click on OK to exit this Settings window
...click on OK to exit the Internet Properties window.

Hi Everyone,

I've read a lot about the "virtues" of the W7 Virtual Store methodology, etc. However, I have a key application that cannot work if files are not saved in its native folder. So W7 saving everything in the virtual store is a non-viable state of affairs for me.

Does anyone know how to stop this happening? I know it can be done because someone set my machine up to stop this happening when new (for this exact reason). However, it seems that adding the service pack 1 has restored the W7 default to save everything in the virtual store.

Learning to live with virtual store is NOT an option - I need to stop these files being saved there.

Thank you in advance for any help with this.

A:How do I stop W7 from saving files in the Virtual Store?

Simple answer: Disable UAC or change the permission setting for the respective program's folder to "Authenticated Users: F, Users: F"

Why you shouldn't do it:
Virtual Store is for compatibilty. I don't believe you when you say "it cannot work if files are not saved in its native folder." Why? Because your program cannot tell the difference between its native folder and Virtual Store. The program sees the files in VirtualStore as if they were in its native Program Files folder. If its a more intrusive program, as if they were in the /Windows folder.

That's the simple answer/s. If you want more detail, see

Windows Vista File and Registry Virtualisation - Richard's Weblog - Site Home - TechNet Blogs
New UAC Technologies for Windows Vista

Yes, your registry has a VirtualStore too. Never noticed your program getting bothered with it? Because you probably didn't know it existed.

A:how to make recovery stop saving all my files

The easiest way I can think of to do that is to create a new data partition and save your pictures, videos, documents there, instead of on your C partition. The installed program files have to stay with your C partition. After that you can create system images of just your OS and installed programs. I would still advise that you backup your other data as well, preferably on an external HDD, or DVD.

With my old Windows 98, if I simply put ".jpeg" in the top search line (with Local Hard drive for my choice of "look in"), the results would be hundreds of .jpeg files. And when I try it with XP there are only 8 .jpeg files listed.......when I know there are hundreds on my computer ? I also tried searching for .ico files just to see if that worked and it did, however, It listed a lot of .ico files, but not all of them.

Hi,

In the last day, I'm experiencing problems browsing pictures (mainly jpegs) in My Pictures. When I open the subfolders in that folder, thumbnails are slow to load. Even if the view is set to 'details', the mini icons against the file name build very slowly. This wasn't happening until yesterday when I loaded some images to a subfolder in My Pictutes from a CD.

If I try to navigate away from the folder, my computer freezes.

I have tried deleting all the pictures I loaded yesterday and have defrag'd, but still getting the slow behaviour.

Thanks

Both are available for OS9 and OSX.** There is a bug in the AVI file format which results in Quicktime not playing correctly MP3 sound in a DivX movie. I was looking for some files from different folders in a computer so I searched for it using normal windows search and the result has come around 1000 files.

Now when I try to copy all these files and paste it in an external usb, it could not copy because most of the file names are same(though in different paths). Also, I'm not able to check the total sizes of the results.

I wonder then how I can copy all these 1000 files into my usb.

My OS is win xp professional

A:[SOLVED] how to copy all search result files into an USB (even if file names are same

Hello comonforall,

One laborious way to do this would be to temporarily rename them; for instance, if the file is called "Help", rename it to "Help(1)"; then when transferred to their final location, remove the numbers and brackets.

Incidently, what files are you trying to move? If they belong to the Windows XP Operating System; then, transferring them will be useless, because they will not in another location other than the one that they were originally installed.

Post back with the file names.

I have a problem with a program not saving preset data. Possibly due to harlink extenstion with only one piece of software.

I use symbolic hardlinks on my system but I do not know if the following has any bearing on the issue with the software I am using.

The software is a plugin that works within a host digital audio workstation software (Steinberg Cubase and plugin Soundtoys V5) and uses presets for different settings.

All software is legit and registered. I have contacted the developer regarding the issue with no resolve so trying here as the issue may largely be to do with windows.

The associate plugin has been installed with admin permissions and the host DAW software is run with full administrative rights. I have double checked that there are no hardlink main or subfolders used in the installation path for the plugin software.

All other 3rd party plugins work fine when saving presets and using symbolic links of which there's about 60+ 3rd party plugins installed using the main host system, however this particular software is not saving correctly.

It will save the preset name as a zero byte file and reports unable to save at location.

All other plugins work fine even when using symbolic links when saving preset data.

The issue may have been to do with a previous install of the soundtoys software as a phantom install directory is being created during the installation

Summary:
I am seeking a Graphics Application that Can Make "Special" JPEG files (for .epub ebooks).

Hello and thanks in advance.

I have been learning how to make ebooks in the new .epub format.

I have only one step to go in order to complete the ebook: I need to create a cover image that will work in the desktop ebook reader, Stanza. I have tried and failed to make JPEG files that work, using Photoshop (on boot-camp the Windows side of a Mac) and the (Mac) shareware products Acorn and ImageWell. These make JPEGS of course, but the JPEGS do not work in the ebook reading software.

There are sample .epub ebooks available for people like me, learning how to make the books. I took a jpeg from one of those samples, and inserted it into my ebook -- and it worked perfectly. So there are some jpegs that work, and others that do not.

I need to find a graphics editor (for Mac or Windows) that can make the jpegs that work. Or, an application that can save my jpegs (that don't work) into another kind of jpeg that does work.

I have made a zipped file, and sent it to Box.net, containing 5 jpeg files. Some work and some do not. If anyone has the interest to investigate further, they can download the files and look.

Here is the download link (I promise there is nothing harmful in this zipped file: just the jpegs):

what i was thinking, is that i can put the small drive as slave on the hp, copy my files to it, see if they work on the dell, then format the large drive, put it as master on the dell, and reinstall xp. then, slave the small drive to copy over the files again.

if there's a better way, please let me know. i'm using the large drive on hp pavilion until i can find a reliable way to transfer files.

btw, i would also like to know if there's a trick to get the copied files working smoothly with a fresh xp.

A:copying files to another drive, format 1st, then replace files

If the goal is simply to use the larger drive as a boot drive on the other system...seems to me that simply deleting everything on the larger drive...then cloning the smaller drive to it...then replacing smaller with larger...accomplishes that.

Once convinced that the clone waas successful and boots, then I would delete everything on the smaller drive and re-partition it, using it for storage capacity.

There are various programs to do this sort of cloning, including EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition freeware. - http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm . As with any program...read the instructions for use before attempting to use.

Hi,

I'm a first time poster looking for some advice.

Here's the situation:

I have two computers used for business that have a common folder named business. At one point, the files in this folder on each machine were identical (when I added the second computer I just copied the business folder from one machine to the other). Each computer is used independently and new files are saved under each computer's folder.

I then decided each month to reconcile the drives so they have all the same files. To do this, I copied each computer's folder to an external drive, then combined the files into another folder, overwriting files with the same name. I then copied the newly created "combined folder" to each machines hard drive. However, I noticed that the new "combined folder" was roughly equal to twice the size of each of the original folders even though identical files were suposedly overwritten. (I had only added maybe 100 small excel and pdf files to each computer and there is no way the file sized should have more than doubled).

After some research, I realized the folders were set as "read-only" and the identical files may not have been overwritten. Is this a possible explanation for the now huge drive space used? (Also the new folder with twice the space used up looks identical to the old one except for the 200 or so small files added. It doesn't show multiple copies of the same file).

Sorry for the long post. TIA

A:Solved: Help! problem copying files

Hmm, did you turn on reveal hidden files and see if there's a bunch of extra files there? Or maybe one or more large hidden files? If you open a window on the consolidated folder, and select just your visible data files and right click/properties, does it indicate they are the same size (or very close at least) as the same properties check on one or both of the unconsolidated folders?

What you're looking to do is just keep digging until you find the difference show up in a properties check (or if you just see some big extra hidden file, etc.) and keep eliminating sets of files or folders until you pinpoint the difference.

I used a special utility for that but since this old HD still has residual files on it from Windows XP, etc, I need to get rid of that and just prepare the HD for file storage only, right? If so, how do I go about doing that?

Ok, just to recap, you want to move all your personal data onto a second hard drive that's already in the computer. But first you want to remove all the current files that are on it?

To clean it, the best option would be to simply format it. Open My Computer, Right click the drive you want to clean, choose format, then choose the proper format option that you want, and click ok.

Once it's done you should be able to just Copy/Paste, or Click/Drag your files to the newly formated drive.

Hi.

Well, I can't get anyone on here to help me with my crashed computer, so can ANYONE at least tell me where I can find step-by-step instructions on how to hook up my hard drive to another computer and salvage (unbelievably important life or death medical/financial/scanner/photo) files. I'm no MS cert. tech, but I do know my way around a computer- sort of- (I learn what I need & then a month later it's/i'm obsolete, y'know)

The system is an old HP running XPpro I put a .... Seagate... I believe, HD in it when the HP died ( a week out of warrranty). An unknown virus trashed the OS in it, so I bought an old junker & got it up & running, just to have something to run the HD into.

I have never tried to salvage data from another computer HD before, and I need to know what sort of connections I need, what to plug to, etc. I'm trying to save several text/photo file folders from desktop and (very important) the image files from my scanners "Paper Port" program.

Thanks - all comments/help desperately appriciated - I can't even post a resume till I get this fixed!

Isn't there a program directly on windows that lets you do this? A few months ago I put my resume ( microsoft works document ) onto a cd. Now I went to do it again and the only way I could figure out was with Sonic data module. But the last time I don't think I used Sonic because I remember after I burned the files to a cd, everytime I would log back on my computer a little notification would pop up in the bottom right hand corner reminding me there were files ready to be burned. This is bugging me. In fact, last time I think I remember just dragging and dropping the files I burned using windows.

I tried doing this. Example.... game files/data from my XPdocs on C: to my win7 docs on D:.... couldnt do it, just gave me a chime, no dialogue box or anything. Also tried to move a file from my desktop to either mydocs or to program files folder, same thing. After that, even took ownership of all affected folders/files, ones being moved and destination folder. Still the same.

Question: is there some type of security setting i am missing? anyone else test this? I have moved files to mydocs before, and now i cant move anything to there.... has me confused now. Nothing special about a file or folder i am trying to move, permissions ect.

Tried both cut and paste, and copy, same problem either way. No protected files/folders involved

A:copying files to mydocs or program files

I can extract a zip/rar to mydocs or program files, but not manually just cut/paste or copy files to there... not just mydocs, but music folder, pictures... anywhere now it seems.... am able to save a downloaded file to those locations. confused

[edit] only recent app installations include powerISO, cod2 and Qtracker (game browser) since this problem has started. Dont think any of those should have affected or caused this problem. Also, yes, i am admin

[edit2] Well, not just mydocs or program files folders affected, its any drive/folder that i try to copy/paste cut/paste to another location

Hi Guys,

I am a first time user of powershell and thought that someone on this forum might be able to help me out. Please be gentle.

Basically what I am looking to do is copy a specific file when it exists in our drop zone or has been modified. I hear you mocking me already, but please hold off until you read the rest.

Unfortunately the process I am developing is an interim solution where we are migrating from one server to another, yet still need the data stored permanently on the old one. In the "new world" we will have a landing zone which data gets FTP'd to, we will pick this data up, rename it and stick it in a new location. This process is set in stone, so the idea of my code is to copy the data from our existing FTP location to our new landing zone and let the pre-established scheduled job do the rename and move. Once the new server is fully established and the files will be FTP'd to this location anyway, so all I have to do is turn the jobs I am developing off and the rest will take care of itself.

Firstly I thought that I could use the mirror function in Robocopy. From my understanding however (please correct me if I am wrong), Robocopy compares the file on the old server to the file on the new server and if there has been a change in either the modified date or the size of the file then the job copies the file. Obviously the flaw here is that by the time the job runs again (scheduled every 1hr) then the file will have been moved to it's ... Read more

I wish to take my Laptop to a relations house to import Videos and Photo's of my Great Grandson. The files are on a hard drive which my Grandson will be bringing from his house to the said house. I have connected my Laptop to my desktop as a trial. When I connect a USB cable to both Computers, I get no message to say the Desktop has found new hardware, is this because my Desktop is XP and Laptop is Vista? The Computer I will be copying the files from at my relations house is Vista like my Laptop. The reason I wish to use my Laptop for the transfer, is because I do not have a Flash drive with enough capacity for the Videos and photo's. Your help as ever will be most apprciated.

Hi

I am having trouble copying files using Windows Explorer (XP SP2)

I have a digital photo frame and want to display the photos in date order

I copied 500 jpg files from various directories on my hard drive to a temp directory and sorted them by “Date Photo Taken”. Using Explorer’s bulk rename facility I renamed the files Xxxxx (101), Xxxxx (102) etc to Xxxxx (500). I then copied these to a SanDisk Ultra II photo card.

However when I put the photo card into the photo frame, the display was not in the correct order. It started at file 132 up to 500 then 101 to 131. I then deleted all the files on the SanDisk and tried again several times. It never put 101 first but the starting file was always different. I also tried a Sony MemoryStick Pro with the same result

I then tried copying the files to another directory on my hard drive. It is difficult to read the display counter accurately cause it goes so fast but I could tell that it didn’t start at 101 and after file 500 it stared at 101.

So why does Explorer do this and what is the solution?

Hello everyone,

I have the weirdest problem and no matter what I do, it doesn't go away!
Whenever I copy some files over USB (from USB or SATA to USB), some of them are copied corrupted...
I have changed my main-board (both Asus P5W DH Deluxe), used different USB hosts from USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 & on-board to Express Card.
Installed a hotfix from Microsoft for NVidia main boards (which attempts to solve USB HDD problems).
Re-installed Windows but still no luck! My files get corrupted during transfer.
Even disabled my Antivirus but still the problem exists...

My specs:
Asus P5W DH Deluxe MB
Intel Core 2 Quad - Q6600
Asus Geforce 8800 GTS
Windows 7 - x64 SP1

Please tell me any solutions you might have, this problem is killing me and I don't know how to solve it.

Thanks in advance!

When installing drivers have you installed the chipset drivers? And did you install the chipset drivers first before any other drivers?
Go to Asus to find the right chipset drivers and all other drivers

Hi all,
I have had an error on a HDD, the machine was in a constant reboot loop and no matter of fixing would enable windows to boot. a chkdsk in another PC just runs for 48+ hours. I am getting error after error after error of bad FAT and file location blocks (suspoect the disk is on it way out) however the user has a steam directory of approx 700+gb, and is obivously keen not to have to download it all again. I have tried to copy and paste but it appears to take the cut command, but when I try to paste it to another disk, nothing happens (other than the ghosted cut folder icon returning normal). no file copy happens or anything.
to be honest I am not that bothered in recovering it more interested to know what the fault could be? is it a permissions issue? i have set the folder to "everyone" but i am getting the age old "you do not have permission" error. I have tried to recover some small picture files from the disk as well, and although these seemed to copy they all copied over at 4096b and arent shwoing which leadds me to suggest this disks FAT has got its boobies in a tangle?

A:[SOLVED] strange issue copying files

Boot from a Linux Live CD/USB and then copy the file to another drive.A Live CD/DVD or USB flash drive contains a complete bootable computer operating system (OS). When you boot a computer from it, the OS loads into, and then runs from memory instead of a hard drive. This allows you to run an OS without installing it or making any changes to a computer's current configuration.

To create one, download an ISO file containing the OS you want to use, (such as Ubuntu, Slax or Zorin), then use something like ISO Recorder to burn it to a CD/DVD or USB key.

Now boot your computer from this disc/key and your computer will be running that OS instead of the one on its hard drive.

When you're done, simply reboot your PC from the hard drive.

Hello there,
My wife's laptop died recently--there was a power supply issue, a burning smell, nothing good. The hard drive seems to be fine, though, so I bought a USB-to-IDE adaptor to copy over the files onto my desktop. The laptop had XP; desktop has Vista.

Everything worked fine, and I could access all of the files on the hard drive, except for the ones in her user folder (c:/documents and settings/purvi). When I try to open this folder, it says "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to access folder." I do so, and nothing seems to happen--I can hear a lot of hard drive activity in the desktop, but the folder never opens. Copying it also fails (it just sits there not copying). It did manage to copy some hidden files (ntuser.dat, the Application Data folder, etc.), but none of the stuff that on the desktop, in the My Documents folder, etc. It also claims the folder has nothing in it (even though I was able to copy some hidden files out of it).

Do you think this is a vista problem? If I tried to copy to another XP computer, might I have better luck? It's not the end of the world if we lose these files, but there are some personal things we'd like to keep.

Any idea how to see these files? Maybe there's a way to temporarily boot my desktop from the external laptop hard drive?

Any advice would be thoroughly appreciated...thank you so much!

-Bryce

A:Solved: Copying files from our old hard drive

I've run into that once... don't quite remember the sequence of commands but try the following...

First make sure you are logged in your desktop as an administrator

- Right click the (c:/documents and settings/purvi) folder and choose (properties)
- Click the (security) tab
- Click the (Advanced) Button
- You will be in the (permissions) tab. a list of users might appear, click the user you are logged in as
- Click (Edit)
- Choose the user again,
* click (add) and type (administrators) then (OK)
* or click (edit) and choose (allow) to all... Verify...

You should have full control over the folder and should be able to copy it's contents.

Hope this helps

I am currently trying to use the instructions from Gizmo's site to create a Bootable cd with an image of my current clean install and have all my files and other users doicuments and favorites on the disc. One of the first things I am supposed to do is copy a .iso file G_D Partion Maker to a blank Cd. Every time I try and copy the downloaded file I get the error messege that the file is not a Win32/ application and won't work. I have tried it with 3 differant partition software programs and all of them say the same thing, what should I do to correct the problem?

A:Solved: Problem Copying Partioner files to cd

You need to burn the .iso to a blank cd with burning software that can handle a .iso file such as Nero or Imgburn (which is free). A .iso file is an image file of a complete cd.
