Phantom files - file deletion or moves - files still exist in original place

Q: Phantom files - file deletion or moves - files still exist in original place

I have a customer site with an issue that I have been unable to resolve. The configuration is a Windows 7 Pro workgroup environment where we are using one of the machines as a shared resource. All other machines are Windows 7 pro also and everything
is updated with the latest windows updates. All machines are running AVG business edition (latest version).

The problem is that when the user goes to move (not copy) files from the shared folder to another folder, the files will show up in the new folder but they still show up in the new folder. Or if he deletes files from a folder they will show as deleted
but if he goes back to that same folder later that day, those same deleted files show up.

As a side note, all of these files that I am talking about are pictures that were uploaded from a camera (autobody shop) AND scanned files from a Xerox copier going to a scanned folder. No other folders are affected like this so it?s not a problem
with any other folders on the shared folder.

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

Okay, here's my issue. Like a dummy, I renamed my workgroup without exporting to a backup file for my outlook 2003 working files. Now that I am in a new environment, I cannot seem to import my old email and contact information to my new profile under the new workgroup. I tried to import, but no option; I tried to copy the old files to my new directory, but no luck. I am hoping someone out there knows a bit about outlook 2003.

Thanks
Alex

Any files I move to external drives are converted to windows system files, hidden, and have a shortcut created.  Anything in a folder is not touched.  It doesn't seem to reinfect other computers that it is subsequently plugged into.  Tried Malware Bytes and it did not remove the problem.  Running Windows 8.1.  Saw a suggestion of using Combofix on another forum, not Windows 8.1 Compatible. DSS is not compatible either it tells me.

A:Files moves to flash drive converted to system files and hidden

Hello,it's important that you don't open one of these shortcuts from now on. This leads to a re-infection.Please run a FRST scan to begin with:Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.(If you are not sure which version (32-/64-bit) applies to your system, download and try to start both of them as just the right one will run.)Start FRST with administator privileges.Make sure the option Addition.txt is checked and press the Scan button. When finished, FRST will produce two logs (FRST.txt and Addition.txt) in the same directory the tool was run from. Please copy and paste these logs in your next reply.

Greetings -

Running Win7 (6.1, SP1, 64-bit).

Previously, I was using WinXP file search in classic mode.
Predictable, reliable results.
I'm finding Win7 file searching to be unpredictable at best.

I have dozens files of the form xName-<date>, where x is my first initial,
Name is my last name, and <date> is the file date (e.g. - "mSmithCV-7jan09.doc").

When I use the Win7 search to find "name:smith", no files are returned.
Nor will "name:*smith*" return any files.

The search does return the files if I specify "name:mSmith" (i.e. - the beginning of the filename),
but I have no confidence that the search is returning ALL of the files.

I've run the Windows Search troubleshooter, which found no problems.

Is there a classic search mode? Or a simple, cost-effective third-party file search utility?
Or even a way to get Win7 to find all files whose filename contains (but does not begin with)
a specified string?

[I find Win7 to be better than XP in most respects, but I really can't believe
that this search functionality made it out the door. It's beyond awful.]

Any & all assistance welcome.

Thanks kindly,

- Richard

Got lent my bosses hard drive for some films and accidentally pressed "scan & fix (recommended)" which removed a folder with a large amount of movies and changed them all to .CHK filetypes because of a few bad apples. The files are all without corruption. Just need a way to revert them to exactly how they were before windows 'scan & fixed' them.

Otherwise can someone help me on finding a program which scans movies without any reference, just the data from the file and name them accordingly. That would be great

I sometimes copy/move multiple files + folders within WinExplorer by Drag&Drop to another folder
where these files & folder already exist (as an older version with the same name).

Then always a popup prompt appears aksing me if I want to
- replace the old existing files
- cancel the operation
- rename the new files/folders

More annoying is this little checkbox at the lower left corner which needs to be ticked when I want to apply this rule to all current file+folder operations.

How can I ALWAYS automatically let the checkbox be enabled BY DEFAULT for all future operations?

(Right-click drag/drop operations as shown in that video.)

I do not think that there are any settings within Windows 7 that will check those boxes by default.

You can install AutoIt3 from here:

Right click on the desktop and select New > AutoIt v3 Script from the context menu.

Then right click on the newly created file and select Edit Script from the context menu.

After realizing that Mcafee was battling with Norton on security issues scans etc. I removed Mcafee (uninstall). Decided to use Avast been happy as a clam but....I started to look into my hard drive files with a program called Disk Investigator. I found several files that have been there since 2001 they are Norton related and pretty large taking up valuable cache space. Win 98SE does not show Norton AV in the install /uninstall software, in My Computer.

Since I don't run Norton, how can they be removed ?

I have to move a few thousand files and folders from my desktop to external USB hard drives to free up space on the desktop drive.

I need to keep the original folder and file dates. When I copy or move folders, Windows changes the folder date, but does keep the file date (created, modified and last accessed now become the current date.)

Is there any "tweak" in Windows I can do in order to keep all the dates accurate?

I've even tried a couple backup programs to move/copy files, and the folder date is changed to the current date in all three categories as above.

My files have a format of "ID_date_time.d7d?
Ex: 11111-5_2013_10_07_142149.d7d
The ID is 1111-5 and was tested 10/7/2013 at 2:21:49 PM and the file extension is always .d7d

The local files are automatically saved here by the program generating the data:
C:\Local\Data

I want them copied to the following directory:
E:\common\UserGroup\UserLocation\Test Data\(ID)
For the above example, it would be copied to: E:\common\UserGroup\UserLocation\Test Data\11111-5

Then, upon successful completion of copying the file, I want the file moved to:
C:\IDArchive\Data\Old Data

Then the file should be removed from the original Local folder.

I can do most of this with a batch file, up to the point where I match the file in the Local\Data folder to its proper destination using its ID number. I need to pull the ID number out of the file name and use it to identify its destination - all of the destination folders already exist. I can't figure out the correct code in the batch file to find the ID number and then extract and match it to its folder.

Help?

Hi Jordansl,

Here's a full solution to the task you mention. A double For /F loop is used to extract this ID from each file name.

Preview:

Code:

REM For each file in %source_location%, copy it to
REM %copy_to%\*ItsID*, then move the file to %move_to%.

set from_source="C:\Local\Data"
set copy_to="C:\common\UserGroup\UserLocation\Test Data"
set move_to="C:\IDArchive\Data\Old Data"

pushd "%from_source:"=%"

echo Would you like one to be created for it with the file '%%~nxA' copied to it?
echo If N, the file will not be copied or moved.
choice & if not errorlevel 2 md "%%~fC\%%~B" && copy "%%~fA" "%%~fC\%%~B"

Hi,

My company has contracted a ransomware on a computer that was attached to a virtual drive on a server. Although the server couldn't get infected, its virtual drive files (which is a repository) got encrypted.

Since I have a couple of files that I had backed up and therefore have the original copies, does a program exist whereby I could load the original file and the encypted file and the program deduces the private key so that it can decrypt the rest of the files?

I do not need to remove the malware since I have already done so myself.

Thank you,

Hello, I'm wondering if there is a way to alter this functionality a bit. When I copy and overwrite a file, I'd love an option that basically did this:

"Move, but keep both files - The file you are overwriting will be renamed filenamehere(1).jpg"

Is there any way to do this?

A:"Move, but keep both files" ~ Any way to rename original file instead?

Hi,

When you copy/move a file into a folder and that folder already has a file in there with the same name, you should see this:

You would then just select the highlighted option and that would keep both files, do you not get this option?

I recently downloaded a zip pack which I extracted with Power Archiver. Some of the file names were really long for some reason, so everytime it would extract one of these, it would make a file that, when right clicked would have no options for Delete, Copy, Cut, etc. I can't even change the names. When I click on it nothing happens, and when I drag it to the recycle bin nothing happens.

Can somebody tell me how I can get rid of these? I don't even want to use them any more, I just want them off my computer.

I still have my Dell Dimension 8400 and was helped by CFLager on my mail backup problem but I still have another different problem also now that this is solved. I store all of my files on external drives, one small 80GB (old) and a 500GB whch I store all my files on. I have a 2 TB new drive which I am going to be using very soon on my next reboot and transfer of my files. I discovered that some of the files on the 500GB drive have been duplicated and reinstalled in many other folders on this drive, older files I only have for storage and active ones like my photo files. One folder of Text and lists of a club I belong to was moved into a group of files in my photo storage. This drive is only on when storing or retriving files, but I guess it was enough to allow a virus in. I have protection on my computer but I do no know how anything could slip thru. Anybody know how to get it off my external drive. I am afraid when I move the files to the 2TB drive the virus will go too.

I`m not officially allowed to give detailed anti-virus advice but if I ever get a virus problem similar to yours, I`ll connect the external drive to the main computer and after making sure it`s up to date, I`ll run a full and deep scan on both the external drive and the system drive using the main computers installed AV program. Some programs leave bits of the program installed after you have uninstalled like a lot of the free antivirus programs.  But these will usually have a uninstaller program which will remove what is left over.

There is one way that you can tell if there are any parts of a program left after uninstalling it, use the regedit to open the registry and do a search for the program.  If you only have average computer skills you shouldn't make and changes in the registry, this could result in turning the computer into an expensive door stop.  So don't make any changes.

To search for programs in the registry go to Search and type in regedit, when it shows up under Apps click on it.

When the registry opens click on Edit, then click on Find.

In the box that opens type in the name of the program you want to find, then click on Find next.

A box will open showing that it is searching for the program.  If it is found it will open the section of the registry where it is located, if it is not the it will tell you that it could not be found.

This is a problem with unwanted files on my flash drive. The problem persists on several computers, so it is not directly an issue with a particular computer or OS although the computers used were running Windows 7 and Windows XP.

I am trying to delete a folder from my 16 GB flash drive. During the process I get the message that it is attempting to delete 5919 items totaling 9.19 TB -- that's right TERABYTES!

Finally a message appears that it cannot delete some fffffff.fff files because they cannot be found. Such files are nowhere to be found and the directories I want to delete remain, undeleted.

How can I remove this junk?

For what it is worth, the unwanted directories were previously used for portable Thunderbird files.

I was cleaning up my 3-year old WinXP Home computer. My anti-virus (Avast Home Ed.) trapped a Trojan as I was working so I did a "Standard Sheild" scan - I watched it scan the Documents & Settings folder where it found more than 20,000 files (6+ gbytes worth). Some of the files were called bind[1].htm and bind[2].htm - it took Avast a while to scan each one so I assume they are pretty large.

I tried to locate these folders (all had random names) and were located down in DocsandSettings>username>LocalSettings>...
...on the virus scan I could see a folder TempContent but in the above path there was only "Temp"

I "unhide" all the folders and tried to Search for them - no luck - and can't locate them manually either

I have used a number of malware scanners, anti-virus, etc. products in the past six months fighting off problems - I can't find any indication of infections yet - except for in the past few days I received Google Alerts (that I ordered) but that contained links that let to malware sites ("Your computer is infected", etc.) - it appeared tha Avast trapped them but ....

So my questions are:
How do I find and delete all of this stuff in the Documents and Settings folders? (other than cleaning up browser history, temp files...)

(Depending - I guess on the response - I might need to move these questions to the Anti-virus Forum):

I recently backed up my laptop to my desktop's 250gb WD hdd. Almost everything was music and pictures and the transfer was around 30gb. Initially I had my backuped media separate from my desktop's media, but still on the same hdd. When I combined all my media together into their respective folders everything disappeared... kinda. My music and picture folders both show as completely empty, displaying no files, and with sizes of 0 bytes. However, all of my music will still play in Winamp and Itunes!

There is one more oddity. Since this first happened, about a month, my music files have slowly disappeared completely. Winamp and Itunes can't find some files; a number which is growing noticeably. Does anyone have ANY idea what is going on??? I have AVG installed along with spybotSD and run both regularly. They have found nothing.

Our office computer has a serious malware issue. I tried fixing it with Avast! Which worked fine until Avast! suddenly disappeared for no apparent reason (but it didn't uninstall or something. The program files are still there but the .exe file was mysteriously deleted). A number of other antiviruses and recovery software such as Salamander were also deleted. The infection returned when someone plugged in a USB after Avast! disappeared. The virus hides and then deletes files from USB drives. I'm willing to try combofix after the avast! debacle.

That's exactly what OneDrive is designed to do. It sync's files between the cloud and your local PC.

However, you can selectively choose which folders sync to your PC. In windows 8.1, you go into one drive, right click on the folder and it will check a box, at the bottom of the screen will be a toggle option to make online only (cloud only). That will remove it from synchronizing locally.

I often use the shift + delete to delete files I do not need, unfortunately sometimes the parent folder gets deleted instead (focus on the left tree area instead of the right list area)

at least, a list of the deleted files would be good,

is it nothing like such in the computer management area ?

is any program addition that would monitor creation/edition/deletion of files?

thanks

A simple fix to that (I also used to do this) is to always use the mouse, never the Delete key. That way you know exactly where you are.

As for your question, I've never heard of any software that does this but I would not be surprised if something does exist. There is nothing built into Windows 7.

Greetings.
I have been facing an issue with my system whereas "some" file deletion are very slow. Two cases are dramatic examples:
- use from a command line of DeleteXP.exe
- trying to remove a book from Calibre GUI

A few things before people jump to the usual suggestions. I tried all of the below without better results
- recreate the Recycle Bin (mutiple recipe including safe boot, delete, reboot)
- defrag and analyze drive for errors (none found)
- scan for virus, trojan, etc ... none found (three utilities used from MS, MalwareBytes and Outpost)
- create a new account and try file deletion under this new account (same condition)
- disable anti-virus and try again
- boot in safe mode and try again
- ...

Nothing helped. A note as well this does not happen systematically (if I delete from Windows Explorer,
things work fine and many tools/GUI I have delete the file alright). I tried to speculate with the author
of Calibre that perhaps the use of SHFileOperation() could be the cause but was somewhat left with
a "not a problem with our tool, works elsewhere, figure out what slows down your computer".

I focused on DeleteXP and traced it using "Process Monitor" and see the hang as below:

Disabling your antivirus (AV) app might not remove the file filter drivers. The AV app might still be inspecting things, just not acting on what it sees. You might want to uninstall the AV app as a test.

You might also want to keep a Virtual Machine around for such testing. One with no 3rd party software installed. One that is frozen so that it is almost always the same (updated only with patches - then that version is frozen).

Hi all
I am setting up a dvr (digital video recording) system on my computer running xp
the files will be saved on a separate 250Gb Hard drive.
My question is is there any way to delete some of the files automatically after a number of days.
This is so that the hard drive will not get full of the recorded files.
It would be ideal if they could automatically be deleted after say one week.
I know that I could delete them manually but other people have to use the system.

Thanks in advance for any help

I think MCE automatically will delete the oldest files if the drive is becoming full

Hello,

Below script is for recursive deletion of all files (not folders) older than 30 days except for some extension to be excluded.

the script works but I notice it doesn't delete files which don't have an extension (I mean some files shows as File in proprieties)
Get-ChildItem -path "C:\TEST\" -exclude *.log,*.hep,*.sep,*.ocs,*.xls,*.xlsx,*.doc,*.pdf,*.ps1,*.dll,*.mdb,*.exe,*.inf,*.ini,*.jpg,*.bmp,*.gif,*.jpeg,*.png -recurse -file -erroraction silentlycontinue | Where-Object {$_.LastWriteTime -lt (Get-Date).AddDays(-30)} | tee -FilePath "C:\Scripts\Logs\Deleted Files-$logtime.log" -Append | ForEach-Object { sdelete -P 1 -R -S $_.FullName }

Could you please advise how to delete files without an extension?

Thanks in advance

I have a 80gb SSD which I use to store my Windows 7 OS, applications and a couple of games.

I was just checking today and I noticed that I had 24GB free. I went into my C drive, set all hidden folders to "show" and selected all the folders and hit properties. According to the "size" I am using 41GB.

So, an 80gb SSD has 74.4GB of usable space.

I am using 41GB, which means I should have 33.4GB free space. However, it only shows that I have 24GB of free space, so about 10GB of space is being used and I am unsure as to how it is being used.

I figured that system restore MAY be the culprit so I removed all the restore points except the most recent. Now I have 26GB of free space, there is still about 7-8GB unaccounted for.

Any suggestions where I should look?

I have done all the usual CCleaner clean-ups, etc. In any case if there is a file or folder I should be able to see it being used, i.e. the 41GB should read about 48GB.

Hi I run windows 7 on my samsung NF210 laptop.
I recently downloaded a rar file full of old C64 Games as i was thinking of using an emulator to play them i decided against this and deleted the emulator.
i did however open the rar games file by accident and it sent all of the games onto my desktop.

I deleted all the files including the original file that i had downloaded from a trusted site that i have never had any trouble with. plus i had scanned the rar file on download with norton internet security which said it was clean.

twice now my computer has gone a bit wierd and then all of the games files which was a lot have returned to my desktop. i have now deleted them again

i also noticed when i was attaching an email file today that the games were showing up as being available to attach as a file from the desktop, without actually being there

can anyone give any advice on how to stop it happening again?
thanks

A:Phantom Files reappearing on desktop

Are you deleting the files or just shortcuts? If they reapear, right click and check properties for the file location. Also check Control Panel to remove the programs not just the emulator.

Hi people, this is my first post here, though it looks like a handy site.

My problem:

I deleted all my cookies, temporary files, history and form data. I did this for various reasons.

The problem is now I can no longer get into any of my email accounts.

I know this sounds like a stupid thing to do, I didn't realise it at the time.

Is there a way to fix it?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi tkmuthuvel,

By default, members of the Users group have read/write permissions only to their own profile.

Is the file "john" is trying to delete owned (created) by john? Did you select permanent delete or not? If you selected permanent delete and observed that it did not go to the Recycle Bin, what happens if you don't select permanent delete? Does it get to the Recycle Bin then?

I made a breif referance to this in another thread of mine (http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/608074-encrypting-files.html) saying:

Ideally, as an additional security measure, is there any way disallow the folder from being deleted? It's shocking how easily someone could simply delete the whole folder and screw you over just like that (if you hadn't made backups after every change, that is).

I wanted to make another thread since it didn't have as much to do with that thread and could involve other programs. Is it possible to ensure that a file or folder cannot be deleted without a password?

Even a simple program, probably a batch file, could monitor the file/folder, and if anyone tried to delete it without the password, it would tell them it deleted it but actually just copied the files to the windows clipboard, delete the old file/folder, then paste the file/folder back into the same directory.

Thanks,

-Sleeka

I use Ccleaner, the latest version, to delete internet temp files, cookies, history, recently typed urls, last download location, recycle bin, memory dump, checkdisk file fragments and other explorer mrus. I know that using this does not permanently delete them but gets rid of the pointers towards them, correct? I have changed the setting so that it uses gutmann (35 passes) to delete them. I'm not sure if this permanently deletes them or if they can still be brought back with recovery software. Anyone know a programme or utility that will for sure get rid of the above permamnently and can not be brought back in anyway. A previous experience with a hacker has made me use Ccleaner daily, to clear all of the above. Thanks

Any chance of recovery of the sent file folder which was accidentally deleted. Outlook 2007

A:Accidental deletion of sent files Outlook 07

Yes three ways
The first and the best is to use backup and restore. It is a feature of Windows 7
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...d-restore.aspx
The next way is to download and use recuva.
The last and most sure way of success is the use System Image, which is part of Seven.
That system image will change everything on your hard drive back to the way it was on the day you select to return to.
System Image Recovery
Unless your lost documents are extremely important, I would not use the system image method.

Recuva will work best if you use the computer as little as possible, until you attempt recuva.

Dear Friends, Hope all is well.
Been curious about this System - Windows Log Files 512 KB 1 files that cannot be cleaned by CCleaner or by deletion or if its something to even be concerned about?
My desktop runs Windows 7 and I never see any leftover files after running CCleaner.
The other files etc listed in C:\Users\Ralph\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WebCache\V01.log 512 KB only amount to the amounts listed below. As far as I can tell "none" of these can be deleted as they are in some other process.
V01.chk 8 KB
V01.log 512 KB
WebCacheVo1.jrs has 20.0 MB
WebCacheV01.dat 20.0 MB
WebCacheV01.tmp 512 KB
I was hoping to clear out these if it were possible and if it would not harm anything? One comment was made that if CCleaner can't remove it then leave it alone. Another said nothing will remove them and he wished CCleaner would do a better job at removing these items.

Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Best, Raphael

I'm using Vista ultimate. I've set my sharing so that everyone in my lan network can access my shared folders without passwords. But I found out that they can delete my shared files!. How can I set permissions so that people can only copy my files into their computers, without being able to edit or delete my files?

In windows XP, there is a choice to prevent others from editing or deleting shared files. I can't find such choice in vista.
(I don't want to use the public folder. I prefer to share my files from their places without having to move them to a public folder).

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Ok so heres the problem,

I woke up this morning and decided to go mix some music(im a DJ parttime).. i go in to my music folder through my documents.. only to find it doesnt even exist.. yet I can click shortcut to my music(in the start menu) and its tehre.. but my subfolders arnt.. Now heres where it gets me super confused... I go into my DJ program PCDJ and click on my techno subfolder.. it can still access all of the songs so they HAVE to be on my computer somewhere.. yet I can run a search for them and they dont show up.. nor do they exist in the folder where they were saved.. Also I have a shortcut to one of my subfolders in my documents thats on my desktop.. i can click the desktop shortcut.. it'll take me to the folder.. yet if I click back on the folder it takes me back to My documents and NO trace of the subfolder at all.. This has been bothering me all day, I'm a pretty advanced computer user and I have never heard of anything like this in my life.. any ideas of what caused it? or how to fix it.. If not I just lost a whole lot of my mixes and pictures and other stuff i'd like to keep!

Hello. This is my first time here and I'm pretty desparate. I recently (about 2 days ago) did a non-destructive recovery on my laptop. I have an HP Pavillion Entertainment Notebook and run Windows XP Home. The tech rep assured me that my files and programs would remain intact and that the recovery would only replace the OS and system files. Well they were half right. A few of my programs seem to be MIA and/or there are missing .dll or other files so they won't run, or they programs appear to still be intact but when I try to run them, I get an error message saying "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

Also, my personal files (documents, music, video, etc.) seem to be missing.

HOWEVER...I have been all over my computer and the hard drive shows that it still has 32.3 GB of used space!!! This means that my files still exist somewhere, I'm sure of it. The only thing is, I run searches for them and they don't show up. Also, there is a folder located in my My Documents folder that I cannot access AT ALL. I cannot move it, I can not copy it, I can not open, explore, etc. The name of the folder is the same name of my old My Documents folder.

Could somebody PLEASE help me get my files back! I have about 3 years of research in those files and I really don't want to have to go about getting them back the hard way. And I don't want to put any more files on my computer since it is showing that the hard drive is st... Read more
