Error trying to secure a folder

Q: Error trying to secure a folder

This is a strange one. I have two users accounts. #1 is an administrator
account, password protected, that I use when necessary and I also want to
keep others out of it. #2 is a standard account for all our general
purposes. I was trying to remove the standard user from having permission to
access the "Documents" folder under #1 and was trying to uncheck the
"Include inheritable permissions. . ." box when error warnings came up. I'm
sorry I can't repeat them verbatim, I'm afraid to try it again. There were
three and each said "there was an error because of. . . one said "My
Pictures," the next "My Videos" and the last one said "My Music." Yes, all
folders from an XP system. I do not have nor have I ever had these folders
under this folder. I do not know where this information is coming from. So
after I cancel these errors, then I find that the folder is now "Shared"
with the other user account.???

Preferred Solution: Error trying to secure a folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

They are not folders, just junction links unless you change the location of the Documents folder.

Is it possible ??

A:create secure folder

Hi Nilesh,

Welcome along.

Firstly, yes it is possible. Secondly, do you know how to create a new, basic folder on your desktop? It's the same thing but then it's just a case of changing some basic security details for that folder specifically.

Hi All,
I have a client with a small business that has a home office and five small branch offices. All the offices have a cable internet connection and use a cable router that uses NAT to connect the internal LAN users to the web. All computers run XP.

The client would like to have one computer from each of the 5 branch offices synch the contents of a folder on the branch office PC, over the internet to a folder on a computer at the home office.

The client would like this all to be transparent to the users of the branch office computers. Once I set this up, everything should work automatically without any user involvement. Also, the data is somewhat sensitive, so the solution would have to be fairly secure.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions on how best to complete this task.

Thanks.

A:Secure Folder Synch over the Web

I'd setup a secure FTP server with SSH capability in the home office, and then use clients at each remote office with a batch scheduling capability. The transfers would be secure on the link, and it could all run seamlessly.

If you want better control of the process, install the servers at each branch office and have the client at the home office. You can decide when you do the transfers, and you can also troubleshoot any issues from one point.

During the installation of Secure Folders there are a number of pop ups from Qihoo 360. This I can live with, because Secure Folders does change the context menu of Explorer if the option is selected during installation. I read all the alerts and felt like I understood what was happening (except the driver ones, honestly). It was way more than usual, about 6 or 7. Also, there was an unusual number of HIPS pop ups from Private Firewall, maybe 8-10. I could tell Secure Folders makes some fairly heavy changes.

Here's the potentially bad part. About two hours ago, I set up Secure Folders to monitor a drive, and, then about 30 minutes ago, while I was browsing around Malware Tips, I got another pop up. Forgot to get a screenshot of the pop up, but attached pic shows the log entries for the event. Decided to block the event, because it sounds to me like a very unusual thing for a program to do. The request was to "Modify the certificate of a publisher". Anyone know why a developer might add this function to a program? Also, will the block break the program?

Other pictures show modify driver and modify shell events during the installation. There were a few of each of these in the logs.

Attached the log of the events. Anyone see anything potentially dangerous? Why would a developer's program try to change a certificate and then an hour after the program installs? That's the main question I have.

I think there are two ways to do this. One is to share the folders, allow all users access but put a password on the protect it. Then, give the password to only those who need access.

A better way would be to go the the security tab in the properties of the folders and either add the users to the access list or add the group of users if you have them organized that way.

...Recently our Marketing department put out an GIF image for all employees to use as their standard signature. Unfortunately we've started to run into problems where images in Outlook 2003 won't show up because this Hidden Temp Folder OLKxxx needs to be emptied. It's not something I want to inform users to go into a hidden folder and daily/weekly clean out. But I certainly don't want to make it a routine thing for our Help desk to do on a daily/weekly basis. Is there a compromise to which we will be able to keep the gif image as well as prevent emails from having the Red X?

The procedure for having to insert the GIF is: Tools>Options>Mail Format.
Click on Signature then in the empty white field, type in their name, position, mailing address...then below all that info, Insert Image from where it's saved on his/her C driveAnd then click OK and set that new signature as their default to New and Reply messages.

I could also suggest that they use the new signature for NEW messages and change the Reply signature to just the text w/out GIF...but still it will accumulate the Temp folder and cause problems in the long run.

Any help?!

I'm pretty sure the last "Windows Clean-Up" that was deleted the folder, although this file had over 4-years of information stored in it, yup.

Possible the file was renamed by Windows or overwritten, which is why the recovery software cannot recovery the folder?

first the data management system with about six computers should have their own work group differently and secured.

so i set two workgroup one called DATA-MANAGEMENT and the other ADMIN.

the problem is when i click on my network place it brings all the shared documents in all this computers both the data management department and the admin.

how can i secure the admin department so that their shared documents and drive will be private. i dont have a central file sharing server. am using both wireless and wired network.

I had planed to dedicate one computer as the data server for the admin department, how can i go about the configuration?

can some one help me set it up pls!

A:How To Secure A Shared Folder(drive) In A Workgroup?, Networking

You can access files on a server whose workgroup you are not a member of if you know the server's name/IP.

If you're going to dedicate a machine to it, put them all on the same workgroup and set passwords restricting access. (You need XP Pro/Vista Business/Ultimate or Windows Server or Linux)

I noticed there are youtube videos instructing how to easily break into folder lock.  Whats the point of this program and its heavy duty encryption if its this easy to break into?

this is the video title on youtube showing a guy easily recovering folder lock content for one of his customers..

"Recover from I Forgot Master Password in Folder Lock 7.5"

A:is Folder Lock and its encryptionreally secure? Apparently it has major flaws..

ok.. so I'm looking more closely at the video and how folder lock works and i realized in the video the person simply locked the my documents folder using the lock option in folder lock.. it appears its just a basic lock feature offered by folder lock to lock a folder or file but apparently its not the most secure because if you uninstall folder lock the lock feature dissapears with the program and the folder that was locked becomes visible/accessible again..  Folder lock also contains a feature which actually encrypts the folder or file and I would think that is actually fully secure, i hope?

I am knowledgeable in computers but not an expert by any means. That means I should be able to understand explanations w/o too much work on the part of you expert people. I know how painful it is to bring someone -w/o too much computer experience- up to speed, even on the simplest things.
-------------------------------

SITUATION: Person ?A? bought a computer and barely learning the basics of it (Win 7 home?)

Person A = PA

PA logs-on using her password. PA wants to keep some files secret. The problem is other users know her password (this cannot be changed), so essentially they have the same access to EVERYTHING she has on the machine.
So the challenge is to find a way for her to have a place where she can keep private information, files etc, even though others have access to her password.

IS THAT POSSIBLE?

I found a way, simply by creating a Folder and make it ?invisible? (properties = hidden)? and that sort of works? except that if someone knows about computers they could easily go to Folder Properties and allow to see ?hidden files? and that would be bad.

So, is it possible via PERMISSIONS to device a way in which even if someone were able to change the properties of the Folder and thus see the folder and files in it?. To LOCK IT up so that no one would be able to open the folder, even if visible?

I had moved 'My Pictures' folder away from C: \Users\username\My Pictures when I first set the computer up and I had it in another partitioned drive (E.

For space reason I wanted to move it back to it's original location above and moved the whole folder across to the C: but instead of having it as a folder in the username folder as it should be I merged it in error with the username folder!

The folder is now named My Pictures and has the path C: \Users\My Pictures\ in the registry. I have (hopefully) attached the properties of the folder which shows that there is no location tab. The network path is shown as \\HOME\Users\username.

How do I clean up the folder back to it's standard user folder detail without the merged detail of My Pictures and I guess the easier part is to create a new My Pictures folder and point the registry to it (as per the detail in the top line).

Please help a newbie!

I am trying to make an secure POP3 (port 995) and secure IMAP (port 993) connection thru Verizon FIOS via the ActionTec MI424WR modem/router/802.11G box that Verizon supplied. I am running Vista, and I am using Outlook 2007, which is set to these ports.

I wanted to do this with the firewall set to the "Maximum Security (High)" setting.

These ports were not available in the ActionTec's pick list so I added these ports (using the "Advanced" tab and then under "Protocols") so they read "TCP any -> 993" and "TCP any -> 995"

I tried adding these ports to the "Access Control" table, and the "Port Forwarding" table and the "Advanced Filtering" table but none worked.

The Verizon Tech Support line worker told me the only solution was to enable the DMZ host and set it to be the IP address of the computer I happened to be on.

To my astonisment, with DMZ enabled, the "Access Control" rules seemed to kick in for the DMZ host and my secure POP3 would only work if I had this port allowed in the "Access Control" table.

Questions:
1. Is it safe to run with DMZ pointing to my computer.

I thought this effectively brought the "DMZ host" (i.e. my computer) outsied the firewall and exposed all the ports on my computer directly to the internet. (But if that were the case, then

Let me start by saying that lately my bank website, Norton Safesearch and even your website appear to have replaced their secure certificates with outdated or insufficient security. Usually in these cases the https in the address bar is crossed out or has a yellow          ! triangle. If you click on that triangle or crossed out space you will see a grey box that says "your connection to this site is not private". My connection is a private home network as opposed to public. It used to say "you have not visited this site before today" but that phrase is no longer there. Of course I've gone to these sites before. In the grey box there is a tab titled 'connections'. Click on that and it says '! The identity of this website has not been verified' and '! Your connection to www.xxxxxxx.com is not encrypted'. These sites normally have the green bar in the address bar indicating a secure connection. Clicking on the green bar will give you the same grey box, only this time it says "Your connection to this site is private" and it will tell you 'the identity of this site has been verified by [name of certificate]. Valid Certificate Transparency supplied by the server'. It will say 'your connection is encrypted using an obsolete cipher suite, or [...encrypted using a modern cipher suite]. Hi! I don't know if this is specifically a Vista problem or not, so I am posting here.

Here is where I am at:

I am trying to get my XBox to share my laptop's internet connection. I know that this is possible because I have done it before, from this very laptop, with this very Vista os on it. Now, I am unable to checkmark "Allow other users..." for sharing etc. I get the error that Internet Connection Sharing failed because "the dependency service or group failed to start."

Well I found out that it was dependent on the service "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager", so I tried to start that. (It is also dependent on Telephony, but that is running). Same error. I find out that THAT is dependent on "Remote Access Connection Manager". When I try to start THAT, I get the same error. It is dependent on "Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol Service", which is not dependent on anything. When I try to get THAT service to start, I always get the error 1717: Interface is unknown.

I have been trying for 3 days to fix this. I am ready to throw Vista out of the Window & reinstall XP, seriously. The only suggested solution I have found so far is to do a clean start-up. I have done this, & am still not able to get these certain services running. These are my last-ditch efforts, & then Vista is gone for good for me. Ok, I am about to throw my computer out the window. At first I coud not connect to any secure sites so I figured it was the NIS 2004 firewall. I was receiving internal error messages from the program. I deleted this and the problem was still not fixed. Now I have downloaded mozilla and attempted to reinstall NIS 2004. The NIS now says "error communicating with server, please ensure you have an active internet connection." What does this mean? Mozilla will not open either, citing connection problems as well. I still cannot access any secure sites. Does anyone have any insight into this problem? I would greatly appreciate it.

A:Error Communicating with Server and Secure Sites

I suggest fooling around with your firewall's port settings. It sounds like the firewall has these ports closed, the very ones required to communicate with remote servers.

I am not fresh on the exact ports that secure webservers or clients use, however I am sure that a little googling will provide an answer. Better yet, perhaps another more learned member will happily provide that information shortly.

I suppose this question is academic since Firefox is working, but any ideas why there was that error after installation?

Ok, I am about to throw my computer out the window. At first I coud not connect to any secure sites so I figured it was the NIS 2004 firewall. I was receiving internal error messages from the program. I deleted this and the problem was still not fixed. Now I have downloaded mozilla and attempted to reinstall NIS 2004. The NIS now says "error communicating with server, please ensure you have an active internet connection." What does this mean? Mozilla will not open either, citing connection problems as well. I still cannot access any secure sites. Does anyone have any insight into this problem? I would greatly appreciate it.

Good Morning,

I receive the following error message on every boot up of my Toshiba Laptop, running Windows 7, 64 bit OS.

F - Secure Host Process is trying to recover your information.

The message disappears after a few seconds and does not recur until the next boot up.

I assume that F refers to a USB device, but I never boot up with a USB device installed and I have always used the 'safe removal' process.

The error message seems to be of little significance but its persistent occurrence is very frustrating.

Any suggestion to solve this annoyance would be gratefully received.

Just for grins after shutting down try holding down the power button so that the machine shuts down completely. Wait about 30 seconds. Then boot up. It may not work. But it shouldn't hurt to try.

Hi-

I have a Sony Vaio running Windows 7 and whenever I try to open a video I get this popup that OpenMG Secure Module is trying to install itself, if you click OK an error comes up that the network destination cannot be found error 1706, same thing if you click cancel.

The OpenMG program doesn't exist in my program list, and I googled some stuff that says Sonic Stage has something to do with it and I don't have that on my computer either.

Does anyone know what to do about this? Quite annoying.

The issue seems to be primary with Google. I have tried Chrome, Mozilla & Internet Explorer - all new and updated. Chrome & IE are 100% factory, no addons at all. Google is either not loading or only partially loading. Meaning only some of the graphics load. Gplus just goes wacky :P

These errors are primarily associated with Google. It seems to be "security" related? I have some things in my event viewer I do not understand under security. Though nothing looks horrible. For the last 2-4 days google & its services (Youtube, G+ and others) have been acting funky. I did general maleware scans - Several (nothing bad all removed). Is it a virus/hack? Did I do something wrong? Thoughts? On occasion other websites give me issues.

Hi,
I can log into my secure site then when trying to go beyond that, it seems to take along time ("timeout"?) to get to the next secure page. When it finally does I click to access my personal files and instantly I get the error message. I have tried to figure out when this started but it has been a while since trying to access this site. I have read that update 831167 for ie6 corrects this. I have ie7 and cannot put that update in as I get warnings that I don't have ie6 sp1 installed. Also, I have reset the settings in security and enabled all cookies.
Also, I have tried the microsoft "fix it" for the registry and needed to use my XP CD. Still not working. This is bugging me as I was able to use this site 6 months ago.
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This has happened on two Venue 10 tablets after the most recent group of "optional" updates. Rebooting after installation causes a Secure Boot error. The fix is to access the bios setup using a keyboard, turn off Secure Boot, reboot and go through the BitLocker recovery routine. The updates are KB3087137, KB3087041, KB3087390, KB3073874, KB2999226, KB3084905. KB3080042, KB3080800, KB3082353. I have no idea which cause the problem. Dell Support says that Secure Boot Off is supposed to be the default condition. Either one of these updates turned it On or it was always On and the update triggered the error.

A:Dell Venue 10 Win 8.1 updates cause Secure Boot Error

I have the same problem with a Dell Venue 8 Pro running Win 8.1. This had been working just fine and the only thing installed recently were the updates you mentioned. I tried doing a system restore to before the updates, but it didn't make any difference. Just get a red box saying Secure Boot Violation - Invalid Signature Detected. Turning Secure Boot off in the BIOS is a workaround, but because device encryption was enabled (it's enabled by default when you sign in with a Microsoft account) it then prompted for the BitLocker recovery key on every cold bootup. Entering a 48 digit key every time is a pain, so for now I have disabled encryption.

I think Dell are mistaken if they say Secure Boot Off is the default condition. It was definitely On already on mine.

I do notice the device boots up quite a bit quicker with the encryption disabled. I will probably just run it the way it is (secure boot and encryption disabled) but does anyone know how to fix this properly? Would a full reset from the recovery partition put things back?

So today I went to use my computer when all of a sudden I got a message giving me the 3f0 error. I ran a diagnostics test and it said it could not detect the hard drive. I decided to open the pc ( p7-1234) and make all the wires were plugged in (which they were) then tried again. It didn't work so I did some research.I found a bunch of post on forums about people saying open up you secure boot configuration menu and enable legacy bios. The only problem is I don't have that option under the security tab or anywhere to be honest. Can any one tell me what to do now?

In my Home Office using my Notebook and wireless router I have WEP encryption with a Network security key. But I am often away on the road in Asia and I connect to both unsecured and WEP secured wireless networks in restaurants, hotels and internet cafes.

When I need to log in to certain web sites to attend to important personal info like bank accounts and credit cards and make payments etc I often avoid it for fear of this information being visible or accessible to others, even on the WEP secured ones.

I 'm wondering though, if it shows the connection as WEP secured in Manage Wireless Connections, does that mean things are secure or can other people using the same wireless pick up on what others around them are sending and receiving?

I guess what I am asking is, how can I know if a wireless connection is safe on the road and is there anything I can do to make it safe or safer? I suspect many others encounter this same issue.

Thanks,

hello, i used acronis true image and disk director suite and successfully cloned and backup disks many times. recently i installed pgp enterprise to secure the disk. as fate would have it i decided to increase the secure zone partition. the operating system on boot prompted for pgp password to decrypt the drive and then acronis loaded and i used the partition management option. the partition limit of secure zone was enhanced from 55 gb to 61 gb (limit being shown as 69gb). the three steps that appeared were C drive size being fixed from 55 gb to 45 gb, D drive (which was pgp secured) was shown to be going NO change and the third step was the Secure Zone expanding from 45 GB to 51 gb or so. when all the steps were done, the system booted. as always the first prompt was PGP secure disk, i entered the password but the second prompt for Acronis halted and Displayed a fatal error and asked to press enter to attempt to boot the OS. On pressing Enter the system booted and the OS was normal EXCEPT that the D drive was being shown as Raw (i.e. needed to formatted). On inspecting the D drive with Acronis disk manager the three partitions were visible the C and Secure zone with the newly allocated disk space but the D was being shown as RAW Although the D disk size was being shown as before, i.e. 45 GB. All assets are resided in the D drive. Please advise how to recover or restore the partitions.

I thought this might be a server side problem but it only appears to happen with IE v6.x i.e. can POST from Mozilla and netscape. I looked to see if maybe some of the patches were causing this and found Q832894 could cause this problem so downloaded the fix (Q831167) but it hasn't solved the problem. Anyone got any other ideas?

The patched I've got installed are Q867801, Q823353, Q837009, Q831167, Q832894, Q822925, Q330994, SP1
