Thinkpad T530 And Ultrabay HDD - Disable APM

Q: Thinkpad T530 And Ultrabay HDD - Disable APM

Ok, so here's a long story. Purchased a Thinkpad T530 5 years ago. Configured it with two drives that came from Lenovo (one in main HDD bay, another one in Ultrabay - one was IIRC Hitachi and the other one Toshiba, can't remember which was installed in which bay). OS was Windows 8 Home (installed on HDD in main bay) which I sported for a only few weeks since I was confronted with Ultrabay HDD constantly (every 5-10 minutes) parking its head (clicking noise). Being unable to successfully resolve the issue I decided to ditch Windows 8 and install Windows XP 32-bit (also on the main bay HDD). Problem? Gone. In the meantime, I decided to sport a dual-boot system and installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit) on the Ultrabay HDD (in the meantime I replaced the Ultrabay HDD that came from Lenovo with a WD 7500BPKT drive). Problem? None whatsoever, probably because the HDD was constantly in use since it had a OS (which became my main OS) installed on it. Fast forward to a few days ago. Bought a Crucial MX300 2TB 2.5'' SSD and installed it into the main HDD bay. Purchased a SAMSUNG 850 EVO mSATA SSD and installed it into the mPCIE slot. Left the WD 7500BPKT HDD in Ultrabay. Installed Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) onto Samsung mSATA SSD and? Problem with Ultrabay HDD constantly (not as frequently as other people using AHCI+Windows+Intel Rapid Storage drivers were reporting though - once every 5-10 minutes in my case vs once every minute or so as reported by other users) parking its head (clicking noise) was back! So, here we go again. Tried setting Stop Hard Disk Rotation to never in both Lenovo PM and Windows PM.Tried setting Link State Power Management in Lenovo PM to off.Tried setting USB Selective Suspend Settings in Lenovo PM to disabled.Tried setting PCI Express Power Management in Lenovo PM to disabled.Tried setting Optical Drive Speed in both BIOS and Lenovo PM to high performance.Tried Intel Rapid Storage driver supplied by Lenovo (11.2.0.1006).Tried installing older IRS drivers (12.9.0.1001) downloaded directly from Intel's website.Tried installing newer IRS drivers (13.x.x.xxx) downloaded directly from Intel's website.Tried setting Link Power Management in Intel's RST application to disabled.Tried using Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA Controller driver (Microsoft default driver).Tried using CrystalDiskInfo to manually disable APM.Tried using HDSentinel (4.60) to manually disable APM.Tried using Add_AHCI_Link_Power_Management_HIPM-DIPM.reg to disable DIPM.Tried using QuietHDD to (permanently) disable APM.Tried using hdparm for Windows (not the DOS version) to (permanently) disable APM. None of these actions solved the issue (although it seems that DIPM is now permanently disabled indeed). HDDSentinel and CrystalDiskInfo sometimes report that APM is indeed disabled, but the HDD in Ultrabay is still parking its head (clicking) every now and then. Sometimes APM is disabled upon reboot (and both programs report that APM is indeed disabled), but then APM turns itself back on (when that happens, strangely enough, CrystalDiskInfo reports that APM is OFF, while HDDSentinel reports it as ON). Also, I've found that AIDA reports IDLE IMMEDIATE WITH UNLOAD FEATURE power management command is supported (and is enabled) by the WD 7500BPKT drive residing in Ultrabay. Short of spending another 170$ (as if 700$ spent on a 2TB 2.5'' SSD + 250GB mSATA aren't enough) on a 500GB 2.5'' SSD (since SSDs don't support APM/DIPM/HIPM), is there anything left to do to remedy this problem? Has anyone encoutered a similar issue and maybe even (fingers crossed) found a way to permanently remedy it? An even older Intel Rapid Storage driver? A newer one? Am I missing something in Lenovo Power Manager? Much appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

Hi Long time ago I have bought new SSD (2,5"), installed it inside the laptop, and placed original HDD in Ultrabay. I have managed to use the Lenovo recovery partition (this one with over 10GB size that contains image of the whole system, and all drivers). I have installed windows 8.0 from factory image stored on lenovo recovery drive on new SSD Then I was unable to boot newly installed system, because Boot Configuration Menu still rerouted the starting procedure to no-longer existing system that used to be installed on original HDD. I have managed to set up the boot sequence with Visual BCD Editor in a way that it booted from the newly installed SSD in a right way. But it created hell of a mess in the boot sequence. Now I would like to make a clear install of Windows, I am able to acesss recovery menu (F11) but when choosing the optionion of resetting the system - it does not detects the location of the recovery partition. I would like to stay with the configuration in which SSD is placed in internal 2,5", and original HDD is placed in ultrabay, since only internal bay have speed transfer suitable for having benefits of using SSD. What should I do to gain access to Lenovo recovery partition that contains factory created image of the system and drivers? In drive manager I see that it exists. I add print screens showing mess in BCD Please help.

Hi!

I didn't know where to post this specifically. Hence I chose the General Support section.

I have a ThinkPad T530. The main disk is an SSD (on which Windows 8 is installed and is the primary boot device). In the ultrabay slot, I have a 500GB hard disk. There used to be an optical drive here. I replaced it with the stock hard disk since I needed storage more than optical drive.

Anyway, on startup (as well as resume from standby and hibernate), I don't need the disk to be recognized. I want it to be done manually. Is there a way to stop windows from recognizing the device every time it boots? Presently, I am doing a "Safely remove device" after every start up, which is kind of annoying.

Hope you got what I am trying to say.

Thanks,

Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This is my first post, please be gentle. I have a ThinkPad T430s. Great machine, love it to death (in addition to the following, my only complaints are the lack of a 7-row keyboard, as well as painful disassembly process). Something that has proved to be a significant source of irritation is the fact that the 9mm CD/DVD drive has a very tangible "wobble." I've heard from other people, namely individuals on these Forums and co-workers who have contacted Lenovo, that this very noticable "wobble" is normal and will not affect the operation of the drive. Even with this in mind, I have been racking my brain on a way to fill in the gap between the top of the drive and the chassis/palmrest. I was told replacing the drive with a 12.7mm CD/DVD drive would solve this issue. Does anyone have an opinion on this issue? Thank you in advance,- SharkQUIRKS, the most eccentric of Marine Life

I would like to replace the DVD drive in a ThinkPad P70 with a 2.5" hard disk, and I have trouble finding the right adapter. I have found several references here and on other sites to the part 00NY314. I have ordered it from IBM, and it's indeed the right shape, but it's only the plastic shell with a metal bottom, and there is no connector for the HDD. Here's a picture of the part that I have received. Note the absence of connectors. ?I have called Lenovo support, and they told me that the part 0B47315 might be the right one. I have ordered that one, too, and while it has all the necessary connectors, it doesn't have the right shape, so I believe it's not appropriate for the P70. Did anyone actually order the part 00NY314? Were you able to connect the HDD? Where did you order it from? Did IBM ship the wrong part? What's the correct part number for the adapter?

Hello again people. So recently i bought a empty 7mm HDD/SSD caddy for my ThinkPad T420 (41786UU) because unfortunately. One screw that was holding the HDD in place was stripped. And i have to buy a replacment caddy for my 7mm Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD. But as of right now. It won't be here until the 2nd week of January.  Anyway. I bought a brand new Ultrabay for my laptop (http://a.co/d/4TX3BVp) and as of right now. I installed the SSD into the Ultrabay. And installed Linux Mint Cinnamon on my SSD. But i took out my main HDD out of my laptop, because i want Linux Mint to only see the SSD, and not both, so i can make things easy.  And as of right now. My HDD slot is empty. And i'm only using the Ultrabay as my main drive. This could be a stupid question for you guys. But i was wondering. Is it okay to only use the Ultrabay as the main drive for right now? Or is it wrong to do so..

Greetings - I have a Lenovo T530 Laptop - Windows 10 installed. Each time I attempt to shut down the laptop, the laptop automatically restarts itself. I replaced that power jack because the power button also wasn't working either. I had this same problem regardless of whether Windows 7 or 10 was on it. I have 10 and loaded most Lenovo Drivers, including any with management, chipset. Also, the power options are reset to default - that didn't make any difference either. According to the diagnostics tests, there are no hardware issues. It is only happening on this particular T530 - not have been able to replicate the same problem on others. Any ideas?? Thank you in advance!

A:Which one to choose - ThinkPad W520 or T530?

For those tasks you wouldn't need a Core i7 or discrete graphics, save yourself some money and go for the T530.The only disadvantage would be 1600x900 instead of 1920x1080, but it would be hard to see the difference.

I've been trying to find a solution for two full dsays now.My problem:Yesterday morning my t530 windows 10 (upgrade from 8.1) did not open normally. Slow booting and once in Windows, no more audio or wifi or access to startup menu. I did have two upgrades this week, one from Windows 10 and another for the new Bitdefender 2017 upgrade which I accepted. I don't know for sure if there is a link but I suspect there is. I have intented doing a refresh, reset from the diagnostic page and form the prompt page a scan and scannow but to no avail. I downloaded on a bootable USB flash drive rufus windows 10. I have disables secure boot and enabled legacy. When I do an F12 I see the nane of my USB HDD in the list, but when i press enter it just goes back to the top the Boot Menu screen to Windows Boot manager. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:T530 won't boot from USB flash drive -- ThinkPad

I wouldn't use rufus.  I suggest making the USB stick in UEFI mode from a computer running with a UEFI boot using the MS media creation tool:

You can boot from the USB stick in UEFI mode.

Hi, my T530 has recently starting giving me trouble rebooting in regular mode. Whereas I can reboot in safe mode, I do not even reach the initial login screen when I attempt to start-up regularly. All I get is a black screen with a visible cursor. Any ideas where this is coming from and what problems I have?

A:Thinkpad T530 not starting in regular mode

Most likely a bad driver since in Safe Mode windows uses generic drivers.   My guess would be the video driver, so while in Safe Mode, use device manager to uninstall the existing video driver and start clean. Right click on Start and select Device Manager or Start >> Run and type: devmgmt.msc  and press EnterClick on Display Adapters to openRight Click on the Intel HD Graphics and select Uninstall,  making sure to check the box to "Delete the driver software for this device".RebootIf it was the video driver, then Windows should boot normally using a generic driver, and then download and install a new driver via Windows Update. Since it just started, running a disk check (chkdsk) would be a good idea too.Right Click on Start and select Command Prompt (Admin) and press EnterIn the Command Prompt (Admin) window, type:   chkdsk C: /f   and press EnterPress Y to accept scheduling scan for next bootReboot and it will run at startupGood Luck,

Then I took off the original 320G HDD and put my 830 SSD on it, reinstalled the win8 and blah blah blah.Just last night when I tried to chat with my parents on skype i found out the the camera is dead. I tried by doing so:1) according to others threads I uninstall most of the unnecessary drivers;2) reinstall the camera driver;3) deleted the ricoh media driver;4) updated the BIOS;5) tired to locate someone mentioned, the "privacy" problem. I had been having a problem with my laptop that makes the screen reddish for almost a year. I tried everything - creating, setting, deleting Windows color profiles, updating drivers, disabling drivers... I got a bit desperate and started disabling services and processes until I disabled the following process:...and my screen was suddenly OK. Notice how the screenshot is also reddish. This again is due to that little **bleep**. I don't know what it does but it even manages to crap all over screenshots, not just the display. After I found that this caused the trouble, I deleted all of it at this location:C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\ImController\PluginHost Now everything works fine and I can see white on my screen for the first time in a year.

I can open the fingerprint tool but the green led is not glowing anymore.in device manager everything is ok. latest driver installed, detected as biometric device.  also it's listed in system settings.I checked my BIOS settings and clicked on "reset fingerprint data" and also disabled the device and enabled it back.nothing seems to work.. is there any solution? Maybe windows blocked the driver or something i don't know. I've deinstalled the fingerprint software AND the driver in device manager. reboot, and installed all again. nothing.. how can this be?

Hello,I will write first what my goal is. I would like to have USB 3.0 port on the ExpressCard card (I can buy a new one recommended), but it should be able to supply power, feven only for a small pendrive, a smartphone, although my first goal was to connect at least one external USB drive.I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T530 laptop.I really need extra USB ports in it.So I bought one ExpressCard/34 card first, which adds 2 USB3.0 ports and has the option of additional power supply. This is a Manhattan card.Link:https://manhattanproducts.eu/manhattan-en-superspeed-usb-expresscard34-150583.htmlI installed the NEC uPD720200 driver which was on attached CD.Initially, I was hoping to even connect 2 external USB drives. The disk normally works on other USB ports. With a pendrive only 1GB, it was the same. The smastphone also only plugs in so that it only powers it, but it does not shot its disk or it shows it, but it is unavailable to enter it.So I bought another ExpresCard card with 2 USB3.0, this time from 4World company. It also has the possibility of power supply (cable included).Link:https://ikupiec.pl/Product/Index?Id=6748&path=trueI uninstalled that NEC driver uPD720200 from Manhattan and I tried to install the NEC driver uPD720202 from the 4World motherboard, but I couldn't because there was a message... Hi. I can't get the webcam to work. I got this laptop around mid June of this year. Tried to use the webcam for the first time today, Nothing. My device manager doesn't even list a camera. I tried to intall the driver (twice) to see if that would help, but as far as I can see, it's had exactly 0 effect. I downloaded the lenovo settings app, and it's not there, either. At least, I see no setting options for it. But this model of laptop supposedly has a webcam built in, and my model looks pretty much exactly like the others I see on google images, except for a circly light thing in the strip where the camera is supposed to be. I have no idea what the hardware/wiring should even look like so I can't help there. I've been at this for hours. Hi My T530 will not boot properly. I think that there is some software glitch on my T530 hard drive stopping it booting. It was installed with Windows 10. I tried all the blue screen functions including refresh whilst maintaining files. None worked.I also have a T470 with Windows 10 installed.I would like to download the files from the T530 hard drive before reinstalling Windows 10. I do not have an external hard drive caddy and would rather not have the expense of buying one - otherwise I would just put the drive in that and copy the files.I would like to put the SSD hard drive from the T470 into the main bay of the T530 to see whether it all works ok and if so to put the the old hard drive from the T530 in a caddy in the ultrabay to get the files off it, before then reinstalling it using a system image on a portable hard drive. Will this scheme work? Can I take the hard drive from the T470 and put it in the T530 and expect the T530 to function? Can I do any damage thereby? Thanks for your help Dan

Hey, Just a got a brand new Thinkpad 540-E. So far this CPU runs like a beast(with a new SSD installed). I have one minor issue though... GOAL:: Make the F1-F12 keys function without having to press Fn first. So I've tried the three tips I've come across online. Here is what happens: 1. BIOS(ThinkpadSetup): I only get the option to switch the Fn and Ctrl key. There are no option in my BIOS to do anything else with the keyboard/mouse settings. 2. Holding down the Fn key for 30 sec to 1 minute: Nothing happens. I even tried to do a three minute press and hold. I had a blast, but nothing came out of that neither. 3. Entering the keyboard settings in Win 7 manually: So I have no trouble entering the keyboard settings window, but mine looks extreemly limited. I don't see any options looking similar to what I see suggested on this forum.  In fact I see no options to do anything in there besides updating the driver. I hope you guys can help me out! Thanks a lot:-)

Hi to all the Lenovo forum users from Italy.this is my first post here, hopefully someone will be able to help me.I have bought a beautiful ThinkPad P50, and have added a Samsung 960 PCIe SSD disk to the default configuration. The disk is detected in the BIOS and shows up in the F12 boot device list. However, from time to time I need a method to disable the PCIe or SATA disk from the BIOS. My problem is that my installation automated procedure via kickstart tries to install on the first detected disk, whichever it is and somethimes this leads to installation problems. Is there a method to disable the bus controller of the disks via the BIOS? Cannot seem to find it.. thank a lot for any hints. Marcello

In all previous versions of ThinkPads I have been able to disable trackpad in BIOS so that I don't accidentally brush up against it and close or move a window while typing.  This setting was OS agnostic and worked just fine in Linux.  Now with the P1 ThinkPad I've wiped Windows off and disabled the trackpad in BIOS and in Linux the trackpad is still working.   Latest BIOS 1.15.   Any plans to fix your BIOS?

A:How do you disable a HDD password on the T21 Thinkpad? (type 2647)

You had better remember it.

From IBM's site

"Note: Do not forget your hard disk password! Keep it in a safe place. If you forget your hard disk password, there is no way to reset your password or recover data in the hard disk drive. Neither an IBM authorized reseller nor IBM marketing
representative can make the hard disk drive usable."

my IBM T41 Thinkpad hard drive died and I replaced it, so I lost all the drivers and special software IBM put on it. Once I installed XP I tried to disable the double tap touchpad but XP didnt have a driver so I installed the Lenovo UltraNav. With it I can have full control over the touchpad, except that it does not allow me to disable the double tap. the only tapping options are 'tap and drag' and 'tap zones'. Before the hard drive crashed I had disabled the double tap so I know it is possible. Any ideas? I hate the double tap and it ought to be easy to disable.

I just received my x1 carbon 5th generation, but their is acceleration on the touchpad, enabling/disabling mouse acceleration does nothing to alleviate the issue. Having zero acceleration on the touchpad is a must for me, making this pretty useless until I find a fix.

Been navigating a few different forums quite a bit for this one.We downgraded this Lenovo E431 to windows 7 to fit our corporate environment. There is no disable option in the BIOS.The windows 7 drivers do not add the UltraNAV tab. Always fails on the 3rd portion as the 2 green check marks pass on the first 2 components and fail on the 3rd.  Ran under both the user and admin accounts. No other missing drivers. The device manager does not show any touchpad drivers aside from a "universal" mouse driver which can not be uninstalled.Registry mod will not change this. Aside from pulling the ribbon cable out I am sort of at a loss.  First time ever being stumped by a touchpad.....Last time ever buying an E431 for our environment, we've had 3 of these so far and nothing but issues. Sticking with other Lenovo models. Any ideas?

A:Thinkpad Edge E431 - how to disable the touchpad?

I realize this is an old question, but my reply may help some with the same new question.  There's a quick answer for those who know what they are doing and a longer answer for those who don't. On my Lenovo Edge 2-1580 I couldn't turn off the detestable touch pad.  Here's the part you know:Because this is a Synaptics touchpad, the option to disable it if an external mouse is connected, simply isn't there.   You also might know that if you go into regedit and look for  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change the value to 33 it should work ... but doesn't. What I found is if you go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Synaptics\SynTPEnh and change THAT value to 33, reboot your computer, it does indeed work!  Pull the receiver from the USB port and the touchpad starts working again! For those not familiar with regedit, your best option is to find someone who is and have them do it because editing the registry is not something you want to be doing if you don't know what you're doing. To give you an idea of how dangerous it is, read this article on what the registry is and how your computer can stop working if you mess it up, http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/what-everybody-should-know-about-windows-registry.htm Now that I've scared the newbies and made them understand how critical it is, it isn't difficult to do this little fix if you can follow instructions.  So here are the step by step instructions for you.&nbs... Hello, I am trying to disable touchpad on X260. It looks disabled, however one feature keeps enabled. Here is how to reproduce it: 1. Start marking text using TrackPoint and  the left TrackPoint button. Do not release the button.2. While doing this touch the touchpad with two fingers.3. Remove finger from the button.4. Observe the text is still marking with TrackPoint movement. Another way: 1. Click on something which is draggable with the left TrackPoint button. Do not release the button.2. Tap on TouchPad with two fingers.3. Release the button.4. Observe further dragging just with just moving the pointer. It appears that dragging/marking becomes sticky with two-finger tapping though TouchPad is disabled. The desired behaviour is to ignore TouchPad taps (since it's disabled). So, how do I fully disable TouchPad?

Hello, I just purchased a newer (est) thinkpad twist and need to fully disable the auto rotate feature on this laptop. I switch to tablet mode, hit the rotate lock, and the screen will randomly rotate. I'm running a older piece of work software that gets really buggy when the screen rotates. There must be a way to make the screen rotate strictly a manual operation? I've tried unchecking the box in the control panel, but the screen still actively rotates, again even when the rotate lock is on. Thanks in advance.

A:Disable Auto Rotate on Thinkpad twist 230GU

just to clarify it is the 33472GU model
