Desktop Explorer Window crashing, SFC Scan corrupt

Q: Desktop Explorer Window crashing, SFC Scan corrupt

Yesterday I went to open up my desktop folder and it would crash after a couple of seconds. This happens all the time. If I open up any other folder like pictures, documents, video or music, they work fine. I ran Malwarebytes and Avast on the entire drive. Nothing was found. I also ran Avast just on the desktop folder. Again, nothing. I ended explorer process in task manager and restarted it. Even restarted the computer. Same thing. I ran a SFC /scannow and it said it fix some corrupt files but some could not be fixed. I have attached the log because I'm having a hard time figuring it out. Any help would be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Desktop Explorer Window crashing, SFC Scan corrupt

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey all,

A few months ago I downloaded a file (it was supposed to be an image), that is probably corrupt. My IE crashed immediately as finished the download.

Any attempt to access the file I downloaded to result in Windows Explorer freezing and giving me the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" window.

I have also attempted to reach the file by navigating through the command prompt to the file. This results in the command prompt window simply closing without an error message.

I've also attempted to enable file sharing so I could access the files from my MacBook, hoping that the different OS would prevent any crashing. However, I get the Windows Explorer crash when attempting to enable File Sharing, so I haven't been able to test that route.

I've suggested to the rest of my family that we should back up all of our important information (except for the folder I can't reach) to an external hardrive and re-install Windows, but they have reservations about taking that route.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Windows Explorer has stopped working error? I looked up how to fix it and it said to run a SFC scan. It says it cannot fix the error so I did a screen shot of the cmd and attached the cbs.log in rar format. I have Norton 360 for my antivirus and my PC spec are in my profile. Not sure how to fix the error in the cbs.log and as far as these kinds of problems I am a beginner. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is a cbs.log error and my Windows explorer stops working and restarts. I am dumbfounded.

I've been having some frustrating issues with Windows Explorer (on Windows 7), and I've pinpointed the cause to one stubborn wmv file on my external hard drive. Whenever Explorer accesses the location of this wmv file (unfortunately the root directory), the green bar at the top starts slowly running, presumably trying to load the thumbnail of that wmv file. This wreaks havoc everywhere, as any other folders I navigate to then have missing thumbnails that will not load... and when I go to "Computer", it's completely empty and the green bar atop runs indefinitely, but never makes any progress... only heating my computer frustratingly. Furthermore, when I restart explorer, the error "the remove procedure call failed" shows. Logging off or pressing Ctrl+N in explorer have provided temporary solutions so far.

When I try to delete, move, or rename this wmv file, Explorer just freezes altogether. Is this file corrupt? What can I do about this file? I'd preferably like to save somewhere else before deleting it.

I have Windows XP pro 2002, with multiple users/desktops. Last week my son did something that totally messed up our ability to use the internet. After some thought and effort, I determined that somehow Firefox had got corrupted and I thought I'd solved the problem. Well, it seems that more than just Firefox got corrupted, but fortunately, only on the one desktop.

I, and everyone else in the family, can use the computer fully with no problems. But the son who was at work when the internet problem started evidently has somehow corrupted some part of windows because his desktop is now essentially useless. I won't list everything that's wrong, but for starters, everytime you try to open any Word document you get a window telling you that the windows installer needs to operate first. I've let it install, but next time I try to open the same document, I get the same message. Some folders open, only to get a MS error message window, and then the folder shuts down. When I right click on the mouse, the only options I get are to set up a new shortcut or a new folder--no options to open any new documents. His desktop background disappeared too and became simply plain blue, not that that's a real problem, but just another symptom.

I have done a virus scan and spyware scan and had no problems, and that's not surprising since the rest of the family's desktops are fine. The site my son was at when the problem occurred is a reputable site. He was at the s... Read more

Hello,my name is Will (William). I'm very new here(joined when this problem started occuring). I have a 1 year old computer with a serious issue on it. Since a windows update 5-6 days ago my computer is extremely slow in normal mode. First it just crashed all the time. I couldn't shut it down the normal way so I had to press the power button. Since I'm a quite impatient person I restarted it several times resulting in the same thing, Windows crashing. Realising that I had other things to do I left my computer for a while.

A few hours later I tried again. This time it worked. The computer was slower than usual at the start and I had to leave it working a while before a I could use it. But right after that I ran a scan. In both Microsoft Security Essentials and avast Antivirus. Microsoft Security Essentials found a virus. I think it was located somwhere in Win32. It deleted it automatically.

After that I was away for a few days but when I came back home it was even slower. Now it can't even load the desktop normally. Sometimes it shows all the icons, but nothing will open and windows crashes when I'm trying. Soetimes the icons doesn't load properly.
Weirdly enough safe mode works perfectly fine. I'm writing this thread in safe mode with network. I have opened my computer and blown away dust and such thinking that might cause some minor problems. Nothing happened.

Now I'm browsing for solutions to the problem. sfc /verifyonly finds nothing and neither does sfc ... Read more

I'm having a problem with my pc. Everytime I click on an icon on the Desktop or try to copy/move files and folders from the Explorer file browser, Explorer.exe keeps freezing. 2 instances of Dr Watson (drwtsn32.exe) show up in the Task Manager when Explorer.exe freezes and when I terminate them, Explorer.exe crashes and then restarts itself and the problem disappears until next time. Other applications I have running while explorer.exe if frozen works OK so it isn't the entire computer that's freezing, just explorer.exe . Occasionally when I'm using Windows Explorer to search for one of my movies, there is an error and window's explorer has to shut down. That's fine and doesn't bother me so much, but sometimes when the desktop is popping back up after that, nothing is left but my desktop picture or background color. My entire task bar, start button and all of my icons disappear. When I use the task manager to see what's still running, all of the programs that I had running prior to the windows explorer are still running and I can use the task manager to bring things forward...like my web browser that was running. And I can't figure out how to bring this stuff back into its place. I push the little windows symbol on my keyboard and the task bar still doesn't show up. I can't figure it out. The only way to bring things back to there visual norm, is to restart the comp. This doesn't happen often..but when it does... AAAAHHCH!! help me please.

A:corrupt scan log

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and... Read more

Okay, here's my problem:
My hard drive is failing. It's under warranty and can be replaced.
I had an AVI capture from my camcorder that was several Gb, but is now marked at 0 kb.
Undelete software does not help as the file has not been deleted, but truncated to 0 kb.
I know in theory the data is recoverable.

Here's my theory:
Make an image of the whole hard drive, some 200 Gb.
Put this image on my PC at work and somehow scan this image and extract all video content.
Is there an application that will rip all video content from a large file that contains other "junk"?

Thanks in advance.

A:Recover corrupt AVI scan/rip ?

I assume the original avi file was captured on tape---Why not just get a new drive, and capture to the new drive---Why go through all the other nonsense.

Hello Forum,

I have the following issues -

1. First received the message on the computer from MS informing that we had an error - went to view details it said that we had a Error 1033. I went and pushed the button to get MS to fix this issue - but continually receive the message that I have the same problem.

2. The time that I rebooted - I noticed in place of the CPU gadgets that i have on my desktop that all MS gadgets had crashed. Again a fix did not work.

3. Internet Explorer is not working and the tabs keep crashing.

I did go onto the MS webpage and ran SFC and posting the pics from the results. I am unsure as to what other information or where to go to try and fix this issue.

I have tried everything prior to posting. I am not sure if any snips from Event Viewer may assist.

Thank you

Hi, I have windows Vista Home premium 32 bit OS installed on my computer. For the past week or so, my computer has been acting really weird and running extremely slow. Firefox won't load some pages. Most sites that equire secure sign-ins take ages. Like ebay, and online bankings, HSBC etc. and then for some reason my browser goes offline out of the blue, tells me that I can't browse because the browser is working offline (happens a lot more on IE than Fiefox though, but it does happen on both).

Also sometimes firefox shuts down on its own, without any warning or an error message, when I download something, clicking on the recently downloaded programme doesn't open it, when I right click and then open the folder containing the downloaded item, even the folder doesn't open and when I try to manually open the "download" folder or sometimes even when I try to open control panel, I get a message windows explorer has stopped working and is restarting, sometimes not even the message and windows explorer just crashes on it's own without any error.

I've tried using google chome, but sometimes it just won't load pages. I click on the plus tab, and type the adress some it would load, but some it won't no matter what. the page stays blank which is weid because I've used Chrome before and when you open a new tab the page is never blank, instead it shows your previously opened pages or the history (unless you specifically tell chrom... Hi wales,

Try running it again; sometimes it takes more than one pass.

If there are still corrupt files, see How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7.

If you can't locate a good copy of a corrupted file, post back with details of the file(s).

A:sfc/scan run 3 times still corrupt files?

The System File Checker (SFC) can only repair files that are in the mirror. And those are only the most important files. For a better resule you have to run a startup/repair with your installation/repair disc. That has a bigger inventory of files.

But even then there may be files that cannot be repaired - e.g. ,dlls that came with program installations that were not on the original installation disc but which were installed from the web.

I have created a VM with Windows 8.1 64 bit ISO. After the VM created at some times, File explorer and Internet Explorer links in the task bar is broken and the desktop background has became black. And no Videos, Pictures or other libraries working.

As soon as the OS installed, I automated a bat file which would do the following things.
* Disable UAC Policy
* Disable IPv6 by changing the registry.
* Delete local Admin account by logging into domain Administrator account(In AutoUnattend, I will do a auto login command, which do a auto login with domain administrator and run a bat file which will do these steps)
* Determine OS version (This to identify whether the installed OS version is higher than Windows 7.  If it is higher than Windows 7, I will invoke a auto installation of our party software)
Now, Could you please let me know why the libraries are not functioning properly and what is the reason behind broken links? I am confident that it is not happening due to the batch file or is it so?
Also, I have checked the Ease of Access Center under Control Panel.  Remove Background images check box is not selected.
Thanks, Please let me know this as soon as possible.

Im running windows 7 ultimate 64 ... I dont know totally system specs. It's a custom rig that I purchased about 6 months ago. I dont think the specs matter anyway because I don't believe this is a hadware problem, but a windows problem.

So about a month ago I was unlucky enough to pick up a virus infection somewhere ... you know, those fake anti virus ones that totally destroy your system and leave you helpless. It started this whole chain of events that lasted two weeks and ended up with me running in safe mode for more than a week trying to fix the problem. I tried restoring my computer via system restore a few times and got an error every time - (which in turn 'damaged' my restore points so I no longer can use this option)

So, I figured I would reinstall windows and fix it. Sadly, whatever was on my comp as turned my CD drives (DVD and bruner) into dead weight - they won't read a thing. So I got Dlite and mounted the CD to a virtual drive and tried to install it that way, but for whatever reason it gives me an error and reboot and wont finish the install. It does however take me too the new log in screen, which gives me an error when I try to create a new log in for the new windows. I was able to get back into the old windows install and managed to delete the new one. Anyway .. I eventually was able to get spyware docter and a few other programs to run in safe mode and I cleaned the comp of all virus's BUT when I tried to run windows normally it would barely run at ... A:results of my sfc /scannow scan saying can't fix corrupt files. Help!

To try and correct the shutdown problems
Run the SFC three times if errors are found. If they are not repaired, go to event viewer (type that in search, by the start menu) and go to the left panel, Administrative and look for errors.

Run a full anti virus scan
Download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.

Make sure that you are not overheating, shutting down is a classic symptom.
Download and run speed fan to check tempsl

If that does not help
Test memory

If nothing seems to help a repair install should do the trick, unless it is caused by hardware problems.

i couldnt think of how to describe it for the title easily and I am about to go home to maybe tomorrow I will work it out.

My Vista box is currently demonstrating curious behaviour. When I open IE7 I select a favorite and it opens a new window with that favorite in it. If I do a search with my default provider in the original window, the search results appear in a new tab in the second window.

The second window does not display this behaviour. It works normally with my standard settings - open favorites in the current tab.

Again, favorites chosen in the first window continue to appear in the second window. Search results too.

Running IE7 in safe mode stops this behaviour but I have not installed any new software and I have removed all my temporary internet files/addon settings etc.

Any ideas would be great. Funny old game eh

A pre-scheduled scan of my pc was conducted today. It returned an indication that I have a ?Potentially Unwanted Program.? The item name is Corrupt-EP. McAfee indicated the status is ?Detected.? In the Details panel of the Scan Results (under ?Items?), McAfee shows the following path: Fine Name: C:\Users\Don\Desktop\456\Dell\drivers\R200272/00010001.dir. Also in the Details panel a link is provided for me to learn more about Corrupt-EP. Clicking on that link brought me to a McAfee webpage (http://home.mcafee.com/VirusInfo/VirusProfile.aspx?key=248985) which was not very helpful. It said that the risk assessment is N/A, date discovered was 12/16/2009, type is Program, and DAT Required is 5834.

As background, I recently had Dell try to recover some files that I had accidentally deleted (and they were not in the Recycle Bin.) They installed a number of programs in this attempt, operating my pc remotely. They were only able to retrieve a small number of files. At the conclusions of Dell?s efforts, they uninstalled all of the programs that they used in this process. This is the first McAfee scan conducted since Dell?s efforts.

Using Windows Explorer, I tried to view the path indicated above. I could not find ?456? in the described path. I seem to recall that the Dell technician working on my problem did create a folder labeled ?456? on my desktop during her efforts. It is not visible now on the desktop, either.

Hey all, I've been randomly getting computer freezes and BSODs for the past couple weeks now, and I think I've narrowed it down to something dealing with either my hard drive or my windows install. I have a Kingston SV300 SSD with the latest firmware. For some reason my computer isn't saving minidump files so I can't look into the cause of the BSOD, so I figured I'd check hard drive diagnostics and windows diagnostics. My HD tests came back clean, but my SFC scan tells me that iassdo.dll.mui is corrupt and cannot be repaired.

Since I can't post the dump, I'll upload a picture I took of the BSOD along with the SFC results.

A:BSOD STOP:000000xF4; SFC Scan results (iassdo.dll.mui corrupt)

Follow this to configure minidumps:

Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

Then when you next get a BSOD, follow this:

1. Download the DM Log Collector application to your desktop by clicking the link below

DM Log Collector.exe

2. Run it by double-clicking the icon on your desktop, and follow the prompts.
3. Locate the .ZIP file that is created on your desktop, and upload it here in your next reply.
