Transfering license from desktop to laptop, and throwing desktop away

Q: Transfering license from desktop to laptop, and throwing desktop away

I have a custom built desktop at an office, it was running Windows Xp pro with the license glued on the side. At a later time a full license was purchased for windows 7 pro oem, and glued on the side of the computer. The system was wiped and Windows 7 pro freshly installed (not upgraded).
Now a new system with Windows 10 pro was bought to take it's place.
My question is there, the office has a Windows XP Pro laptop, that must be upgraded to Windows 7 pro. Am I able to use that license from that old desktop for Windows 7 Pro on this winxp laptop to install Windows 7 pro? If so, how would I go about doing it? Just an upgrade and use that product key?

Preferred Solution: Transfering license from desktop to laptop, and throwing desktop away

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Transfering license from desktop to laptop, and throwing desktop away

The laptop license will be an OEM copy of the OS, this is managed by the OEM of the laptop and would not be transferable to the new system. the additional win7 laptop is also an OEM license but in this case the support would be the responsibility of your Company IT department.

You need to purchase a new license for the laptop, but, if you can get one an upgrade license would be OK as the XP pro to Windows 7 is a valid upgrade

I would like to transfer some ebooks from my desktop pc to my laptop, but the website I downloaded the reader software from says I can only read it on the computer I originally downloaded it to (which is my desktop pc.) Is there any way to get around it like moving the files to an external hd then trying to read it on my laptop???? If not that means I'm going to have to keep my desktop pc just so I can read these books! Also is there a way I can use one monitor with a desktop pc and a new powermac g5??
If I can do these things please please tell my how to do it.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:transfering file from desktop pc to laptop

Why can't you install the reader software in the laptop as well? Is it a shareware program that only allows one installation per purchase? If so, does it allow a license transfer to another PC? I mean, what if you bought another to replace an obsolete original? Otherwise, you may have to buy another license.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your Mac question except for the possibility of looking for a monitor cable splitter.

Hi. I'm a Windows 8 newbie, so go easy on me .

I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network

As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...

- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.

- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.

- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.

Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.

Thanx in advance for any suggestions to diagnose and resolve this.

I've followed the 5-steps in the Hijack This thread, excellent resource, thank you!
I downlaoded and scanned using the said programs recommended, and had some 'infections'

However, the real reason I am posting here is because, over the past few days, there has ben a strange popup that is still here - even when I restart.
The opoup is titled 'Antivirus XP 2008 license agreement' and has no 'X' button - only an 'Agree and Install' buton. Needless to say that I have not clicked this.
I can't even end the program using CTRL-ALT-DEL.

There has also (since rebooting) a very strange image has appeared on the desktop. There used to be a JPG there, but now it is an image that looks like a window, it has, in the title bar, a title that reads 'Windows Warning Message' - and looks nothing like a windows error window.
The rest of the content of the back ground image reads:
WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer!
Install antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer

Warning! WIN32/adware.virtumonde DANGER!
Warning! WIN32/Privacyremover.M64 DANGER!

Please activate your antivirus software to clean your computer
(this is in a little 'click' box, and obviously not clickable - not that I'd want to!)

I have HijackThis & Spyware blaster logs.

Hopefully that's everything in order!

Leaving the PC running (after posting original message) It keeps restarting (black screen and reboot screen (XP logo and progress bar) and going straight to a BSOD with varying error messages. (I will note these down incase they are important)
When I press the space bar, the PC goes back to where it was before it 'phantom' restarted.

I recently finished building my first build PC. I'm running a legal version of windows XP pro. I've transfered all my music files onto the new system (which I purchased myself, legally), but when I try to play a music file, an internet explorer page pops up saying:

"A license is required to play this file
The file you are trying to play was ripped (copied) from an audio CD.

During the ripping process, the file was "protected." This limits the number of computers on which the file can be played.

To play the file on this computer, you must download a license (a process known as "license migration"). A license acts an electronic key that allows you to "unlock" a protected file and play it.

To download a license for this file, click Download License."

and of course I click on the download license tab, and it tells me:

"The license cannot be downloaded because the license has already been downloaded 10 times.

For more information about protected files and license migration, see the Windows Media Player FAQ page."

After digging through the FAQ page, I stumbled accross this

"You deleted the licenses on your computer 10 times (for example, by reformatting your hard disk prior to performing a clean installation of Windows), and you used the license migration service 10 times to download new licenses."

I can remember reformatting my new PC 3 times, and my old pc at least 5 times (fixing OS, fixing USB drive... Read more

I have seen this done by making the desktop monitor into a half screen then bringing the laptop screen to the other half of the desktop. Can you explain how this is done? Many thanks.

A:Combing Laptop and Desktop monitor screens on desktop monitor

Hey There! Welcome to the forum!

I believe you possible mean remote desktop (Microsoft Terminal Services Client) however i dont think you can drag files between windows.

The best way of doing it with both pcs on the network would be to open my documents and type in the address bar "\\OTHER-COMPUTER-NAME\C$" that will give you access to the c drive on the other pc depending on Firewall settings.

To find your PC name right click on my computer and click properties. Then click the computer name tab. Your computer name will be shown next to 'Full Computer Name:'

For the last couple of months my laptop has been infected with some nasty worm or trojan that no amount of free anti vrus / spyware / system restoring / disabling then re-enabling system restore etc will get rid of.

It started by constantly displaying an "AV Systemcare" page whilst web browsing that would automatically start scanning my machine. Then my machine slowed down to the pace of an overweight sloth the various anti virus' software I have run (malware, AVG, Spybot) seem to have remedied the slowness however we are still constantly beseiged by pop ups including nasty looking ones claiming our machine is infected and that we MUST allow them to start installing god knows what onto the machine, as though the AV Systemcare nasty has somehow mutated!. Its gotten to a stage where neither myself nor my partner want to touch the bloody machine!

You should run this tunnel adaptor remover first. Too many of these indicates a driver problem and it will also ruin your connection if there are too many of those tunnel adaptors. This problem happens all the time. Click and save the zip file, then run the zip file and reboot.

You might also considering using a different driver for this network adaptor. If the problem happens again it may help to remove the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter using device manager as it's known to cause connection problems such as you seem to be having.

Just use Tunnel Adapter – Microsoft 6to4 adapter Remover

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I am no longer able to save individual Remote Desktop Connection files as .rdp files. I am talking about the traditional Remote Desktop Connection application on the Desktop that was in previous Windows versions, not the
Remote Desktop App from the Windows 8 store.
When I try to click on the Save button I get "An error occurred while saving to file"
When I try to click on the Save As button I get "Unable to open connection file" with the file address being where I tried to save it with the file name at the end.
Also when I upgraded to Windows 8, my .rdp files disappeared from my Documents folder.
I need to create different .rdp files for different programs that my employees get into on my server. Now I have to hand type all the info each time into the Programs tap on the Remote Desktop Connection window, because I can't save to an
.rdp file.
I like the Remote Desktop App from the Windows store but it won't let me designate specific programs to use using standard dos notation (ie c:\program files\ etc..). It just goes to my server desktop.
I want to promote Windows 8 to my employees but I need either .rdp files for the traditional Remote Desktop Connection or the ability to open specific programs using dos notation in the Windows Store Remote Desktop App.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del. If it brings up Task Manager, create a new task and run %windir%\explorer.exe. If this brings up the desktop, then according to the posted HijackThis log, this is my speculation (assuming your system is clean of malware):

Too many startup processes. Any undue change to any of them can cause problem during startup. If you could remember the very last time you had accessed the internet before this problem cropped up, did your hard disk light blinked a lot? Some programs were actively reading or writing to your machine. It could be Windows update or ZoneAlarm or others. Undo Windows update, uninstall ZoneAlarm, unintall IME, uninstall Java, etc. Try to minimize or simplify you startup process. Get replacement, another version of Java or from the other vendor, another firewall, another IME, etc.

Sorry for the delay. When I solved my similar problem, the thread is closed. So I post here in case anyone care to read. I have been having CPU issues at 100%. I contacted HP.com support and the last suggestion they suggested was to update the video card driver. I have a Nividia GSForce2 MX200 (Compaq Computer) They sent me to a link to their ftp site and I followed the instructions to download, install, and do a restart. When I restarted there were no desktop icons. It probably means that whatever files are damaged are preventing the startup from finishing. The normal internet programs that launch upon starting up the computer are not launched and I have to manually launch them by finding them. I tried doing a last known good configuiration, and when that failed in safe mode I couldn't access the Start Menu to do a system restore. I tried rolling back the driver to the previous one to no avail. I called HP and of course they wanted to charge me since it is out of warranty. I said it was their file and I asked for a supervisor who told the tech to tell me the same thing. So I was stuck with chat support. We were able to try the system restore which didn't work. I went to Control Panel and tried cliking on Taskbar or Start Menu but nothing happens. HP sent me 2 links for some patches:

While working offline, my Dell Latitude 131L goes into hibernate. When I restart the laptop it opens to a generic "Dell" desktop picture. There is no Start Menu or toolbar. No desktop icons are available. The cursor is in the middle of the screen, but is of no use. I was NOT installing any software or hardware.

I attempted to reboot, same screen appears.

I am able to start in "Safe Mode."

I attempted to use a Restore point, but each time (I tried several dates) it will not take.

I called Dell and we ran a Hardware test (Fn and Power keys), no errors were present.

Update: It loads REAL slow, taking about 15 minutes or more. But then I can not anything. After an hour of loading, I ran Kaspersky and no threats were found.

Restarted and got a blue screen that says
Checking the file System C:
The type of file system is NTSF.
The volume is dirty

Then it does a series of verifications that take a long time.

The following steps will be a good start to resolving the issue. The first thing that you should do is to check that your hard drive is not failing. On a working computer, download the diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's website to create a bootable floppy or CD.Find the brand name of your hard drive. You will find this info on the label of the hard drive (most likely you will have to remove the hard drive from the box to read the label). You will also find sufficient info to identify the drive (the model number) by looking at the hdd code in the BIOS Setup Menu, and then googling the code. Another alternative is to use something like Everest or Belarc Advisor.

problem with desktop display properties

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgr... Read more

A:[SOLVED] opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always act

I have gone through the 5 steps.

Attached please find the Hijack This log, and the 2 DSS logs.

I cannot post the Panda ActiveScan log from my first scan because I simply forgot to upload it and when I go back to the site all it says is that 11 tracking cookies were disinfected. But I am attaching the log from my second scan. Interestingly, there were 4 additional low level tracking cookies found and disinfected. The same 8 vulnerabilities--all from Microsoft updates--remain on my computer since the software does not disnfect these or offer the opportunity to disinfect them.

Spyware Blaster has been set up to protect everything on my computer.

But the problem is still that apparently my desktop is active and cannoot be turned off. I have run Iconoid and cannot make the titles for my desktop icons transparent because it states that the desktop is active. You can see in my previous posting the work that Cool Freak has done to try to figure this out before he kicked this over to "the experts".

Please help me. It's not only that my desktop is ugly with these opaque icon title boxes, there is something wrong with my computer that is causing this that we have not identified as yet, and who knows what havoc that might wreak in the future! Thank you very much for your attention and help.

I opened them in notepad, one reads:

[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21799

and the other:

[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769

These appeared after a full Malwarebytes scan.

A:2 hidden desktop.ini files appeared on desktop after Malwarebytes scan

The desktop.ini files are backups that windows makes
when changes are made to the desktop.
I see them periodically because I have show hidden files
enabled in folder options.
I usually just delete them if I am not having problems with the desktop.

Hi there,

So a while back when i was running XP on this rig, i had a active desktop wallpaper setup that would display animated local radar images. Basically the same radar you would see if you put in your zipcode in the weather.com or accuweather.com radar section.

So now with Win 7, i cant get it to work for the life of me....and no, sorry, the wimpy sidebar gadgets just dont cut it.

Basically what it was, and am looking to accomplish, is have a live animated radar as my wallpaper / background.
Preferably not the whole screen, just alike a 12X8 square or something relative.

Picture attached of a mock setup of what im talking about.

Im pretty sure i originally was using this as my source for the animated wallpaper:
My favorite radar site

Any ideas all?

Thanks for reading

The problem I'm having is at start-up. Windows loads properly, but when it's finished I have no Icons, no task bar, and can't right click on any part of the desktop. All I Have is the wallpaper displaying, that's it.
I noticed on task manager when I hit CRT-ALT-Delete, that Explorer.exe is not on the list of processes. when I type in explorer.exe in the new task, I get a error that says cannot find explorer exe. make sure path was straight etc etc. I was wondering if you might know what the problem is and allow me to take the steps in remedy this problem. I think the explorer has something to do with the desktop not loading properly.
Thank you

Wasn't sure if this is the right category but I guess it's ultimately a question of hardware...

In case you don't want to read the whole background, my ultimate question is, Which power supply should I look to get to replace the dead one in the old unit?

I just moved into an off-campus house at college and the last homeowners left behind a lot of stuff, including what appears to be a functional Dell desktop PC. At least 10 years old, judging by the available ports on the MB and the other hardware inside. The unit is dead on its own, but I tried connecting the 20-pin part of my desktop's power supply to the old unit and the motherboard seemed to power up (light went on, CPU fan started).

The hard drive and CD-ROM drive didn't seem to power on, but I found what seemed to be a safety button (see first image) which I am guessing prevents those devices from powering on if the case is open. Can anyone confirm this for me? I want to know if anything else in this unit is dead, but it seems like everything was in great shape (not much dust, etc). I don't really want to pump more than like $50 bucks into this thing, as my goal was to use this PC as either a dedicated Linux machine or to host a web site (not expecting much traffic at all, and with FiOS Quantum 75/75 we have more than enough bandwidth).

The motherboard looks very much like the Dell OptiPlex GX260 SDT SFF Socket 478 (Image: http://attach.forum.ge/post-54-1270667615.jpg) although I cannot seem to find the exa... Read more

So I rebooted my computer after a crash, and after logging in the screens were completely black and my mouse & keyboard was unresponsive. I did Crtl + Alt + Del which brought up the correct menu, and after I exited it I was put onto the start menu, which was blank. Just like the login screen and lock screen, the colour and design had been reset (to purple, if it matters). Leaving the start menu presents me with the black desktop again, but the start bar at the bottom is present and after a while the clock, wifi, volume etc. loads in the bottom right as well as a User Profile Service notification telling me I've been "signed in with the default profile for the system". There are no pinned apps either, although FileZilla Server loads up after a minute and that is on the start bar now. Also, immediately after leaving the start menu, a "Location is not available" dialogue box comes up with the error message:

C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

When I click OK on that, the Recycle Bin appears on my desktop. Opening the recycle bin displays the same message as before, and it does have al... Read more

I recently setup a new Windows 7 machine (brand new Skylake build) and swapped the displays from my old machine to the new machine, and started working on the old machine via RDP as I migrate things slowly.
What I found by trial and error is that usually within 20 minutes of using Remote Desktop from the new machine, I would get the Aero Performance warning. I see dwm.exe consuming 100% CPU of a single core. This boggled me because I have a fast machine, with
an ASUS GTX 580 Matrix GPU (nVidia) that performs very well. I am using the latest Geforce drivers.
Once it happens, dragging Windows is a very hitchy experience. Nothing works to recover. If I start the Desktop Window Manager service, it'll go immediately to a high CPU state. I have to reboot to clear it up. If I dont use RDP, it never happens, but within
minutes of opening the RDP session, there it goes again. I can stop the Desktop Window Manager Session Manager service to workaround the problem.
One more symptom. Once, before rebooting, I decided to uninstall the nVidia drivers and try reinstalling them. The installer complained that no compatible display adapter was found. I had to reboot in order to reinstall them. This almost sounds like a flaky
driver or GPU, but this GPU worked fine for the past couple of years in another box (though that doesn't mean it didn't go bad since).

I've searched and I get not even one link on this. I have a clean install of Windows 7 plus Firefox and Dell Drivers.. My problem is it creates a ghost like file that really isn't there because if I delete one, the other becomes inaccessible and I have to manually refresh using F5. Also, when I restart my computer it also is creating duplicates of files and shortcuts. Even when I install software it creates two short cuts.. I can deal with having to manually refresh, but I cannot deal with it creating duplicates of everything.
Here is an image that will further confuse you.

A:Desktop creating two copies of files when moving items to desktop..

I can't see anything other than a folder shortcut in your snip? But, with your problem, have you by chance "taken ownership" of any system folders - particularly the "Documents and Settings" folder. This action can often produce the effects you are experiencing.

Recently my desktop icon placement has not been able to stay put if I do a desktop refresh or a computer reboot. I have looked at many internet hits on this same topic and no solution suggested has worked. I've tried them all til I'm blue in the face!

I have done the IconCache.db thing where you can delete an existing file from the hidden ...\Appdata\Local\ directory and restart the explorer. There was no file there. Yes, I have show hidden files turned on. Restarting explorer doesn't help. Rebooting is supposed to re-create the file, but it doesn't. Resetting the colors from 32 to 16 and back is supposed to rebuild the cache. It doesn't. Still no file there. After manually placing a few icons and refreshing the desktop, it is supposed to remember where they are, but it doesn't, they just fly back to where they were before manually moving them.

This is getting to be very aggravating and frustrating. I don't know why this has started all of a sudden, and I cannot seem to find a solution from the many internet hits on the same topic.

Someone out there, please help with fixing this problem. I know I'm not the only one with it. Thanks!

I am using Win 7 Home \premium.

When I had my Vista Home Premium, I had over 200 desktop icons/shortcuts.
Dam things would relocate whenever they wanted. Imagine the frustration and anger trying to find the shortcut I wanted ?
I finally came across this tutorial :
Save and Restore Desktop Icon Layout in Windows Vista - How-To Geek
I used it and it worked. If one or 2 icons ever moved, one right click will put them back where they were supposed to be.

Yesterday, while on my Windows 7, I decided to install that program as well and see if it also works in Win 7.
It does.

Give it a try and please report back.

Note : at the end there is a notice about 32-bit and 64-bit.

If you provide some information about the "desktop", like the version/patch level of Windows, the indications in Device Manager for the NIC, etc. we might be able to help.

In addition, open a DOS window and type:

I am running a desktop that freezes within 3 minutes of Windows XP and showing the desktop. Keyboard won't work and sometimes mouse cursor is able to move. I tried system restore, recovery console (which caused me more grief because it overwrote my Vista MBR), NOD32 scans, Ad-aware scans, Spybot scans, and ClamWin scans. I don't know how this happened. A few days ago, I came back to my computer from watching TV and it was frozen. I had to manually reboot with the button and it's been like this ever after.

I made a free tool(for those who have more than 15 icons on desktop) to arrange your desktop icons into shapes like hearts, circles, stars and so on. It gives a bit of freshness to your desktop, icons arranged into a cute heart on a good wallpaper looks really nice.

You can set the height, width and position of the shape on the screen. It also have a function that saves and restores icons position, useful for those who change resolution a lot.

I attached some screenshots to see what I'm talking about.

I have followed a trusted friends advice and booted into safe mode, ran Rkill, then scanned with Malwarebytes and someinfections were found and removed. However, when i boot back into normal mode AVG still prompts to remove the following infected files:

However, the "move to vault" option fails with AVG in normal mode.

I am not sure where to go from here, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've looked around, no one else seems to be having this problem.

I created shortcut icons for Word and the icons work fine but look like broken shortcuts. Most ppl suggest right click-properties-change icon. I do that and there are NO different options to choose from. Its a blank box.

This is a pic SIMILAR to my situation. The Opera icon is what I get with my Word 03 and Word 2010 icons. They both looked the way they should BEFORE I clicked on them the first time. But since then, they still work but just look awful.

Just noticed this and found it kinda annoying. The instance i was in was watching some youtube videos, then i decided i was finished and closed the desktop by dragging down and throwing it away. Firefox was minimized. But i noticed the video was still playing in the background. Is this supposed to be like that? I feel like when i close the desktop it should close any applications related to the desktop. Maybe its just firefox? Gonna test with ie right now.

A:Closing desktop doesn't close Desktop applications?

No, this is the correct behavior. When you close the Desktop, you aren't quitting the desktop. What you are closing is the Desktop *VIEWER*. The desktop is still running, it's just the program you use to access it has been closed.

If you've ever used Remote Desktop, it works the same way. If you close the Remote Desktop window, the apps keep running because you did not quit those apps. Just the viewer that lets you see them.
