Dell Inspiron 1150 Vs. Inspiron 5160 Processor compatibility?

Q: Dell Inspiron 1150 Vs. Inspiron 5160 Processor compatibility?

I have a dell inspiron 1150 and 5160, they look very alike. Does anyone know if i can put the 3.06 mobile pentium 4 processor from my 5160 into the 1150?

Only difference is the fan is much bigger on the 5160 and it runs very hot. The 1150 has a celeron 2.8 and the fan runs slow or not at all.

Is there any other significant differences between these two laptops ?

Preferred Solution: Dell Inspiron 1150 Vs. Inspiron 5160 Processor compatibility?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Dell Inspiron 1150 Vs. Inspiron 5160 Processor compatibility?

While the CPU will work, it's a power hog and runs hot -- I would not try it without moving the larger fan to the 1150 (if that's possible). The Celeron CPU is the reason why one system runs much cooler than the other -- Intel had pushed the mobile P4 further than it could go and ultimately had to redesign the chip to make it more efficient - - which led to the Core CPU line.

I would like to upgrade my Dell laptop. It currently runs Windows XP on 40gb hardrive, 512mb RAM, Pentium 4 2.8ghz.

I would like to upgrade to at least a 160gb hardrive and at least 1gb RAM. I still want to install Windows XP because I do not want to upgrade to Windows Vista.

Besides the hardrive, the ram and the OS, what else do I need to upgrade my laptop successfully with no problems.

Laptop does not run off of power supply at all. Will not even turn on power light . power light will light up with battery and the battery light will stay on. Does not make it to cmos to boot up. Like no power going to energize cmos. Cpu fan, hard drive and display does not attempt to power up. On/off button will turn power on will not turn off power. In order to turn off power had to remove battery. Was using a known good power supply also a known good battery. Originally thought problem was in power supply socket on motherboard. Replaced with new socket. Getting 13.9 vdc and 19.4 vdc into socket pins on board getting 13.9 vdc to battery connector. Getting 5 vdc out of 2 pins on battery connector. Looking for more suggestion to solve problem. Possibly free download schematic of motherboard.

A:Power problem with Dell Inspiron 5160

1. Bad memory module.
2. Bad cpu fan.
3. Bad video graphics.
4. Dead motherboard. Suggest replace. $140 tested to $190 new on eBay.
Do sniff test for burned odor. Do strong light exam for changes in color or burnished look along circuit lines, or bulging circuits.

After a thourough physical cleaning of the laptop, I had found that the main cpu cooling fins were plugged with lint. (I bought the computer used) I brushed, blew, vaccumed all the dust and lint out of the case. I still have a few lines on the display, so I figure I need to replace the graphics card.

I am familiar with the heat issue in PC's, I assume it is a bigger concern with laptops. What should I look out for as indicators that the main board is flaking out? Would this do similar things as a PC? I have bee lucky enough to find a NOS graphics card. If I have to replace the main bord also, at some time, I feel like I would be better off scrapping the unit and getting a brand new one.

A:Dell Inspiron 5160 display with lines everywhere Take 2

This laptop should have a video chip on the motherboard, and not a video board. This is similar to on-board video in a desktop motherboard. with desktops, you can add a video card if the on-board video fails. With most laptops you would have to replace the motherboard. Does an external monitor show lines?

I have a Inspiron 5160 with a pill of a display problem. I have lines everywhere in the display. The odd thing is, they do not show up when in the Bios, or when the Windows logo is up. I can use the computer, just can't hardly see anything. I tried reinstalling the video driver, no help. I have tried reinstalling windows, no help. If it did it all of the time I would replace the video card, but with the screen clear while in the bios, I am totally confused as to where to look.

This is my first lap top so I figure there are sone hardware issues that would be different that with a PC. Any help will be greatly appreciated as this is driving me nuts.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5160 that is 6 months old and now the AC adaptor will not seat correctly to recharge or provide AC power to the unit. I have replaced the AC adaptor and cord but still have the same problem. Any suggestion or knowledge about this problem?

A:Dell Inspiron 5160 AC adaptor problem

Yep, you probably have damaged the power connection into the laptop. I suggest you IMMEDIATELY get this fixed, because that connector can do really bad things when one or more legs break free of the PCB! If you look at the adapter, you'll see it probably puts out around 20V at 3A or more. To give you and idea what happens when a short happens inside, here's one of two that I've seen here. Yes, the motherboard for this laptop had to be replaced, there is no "fix" to a failure like this. This one actually had flames coming out the holes in the back.

BTW, this failure normally occurs by carrying the laptop around with the power plugged in, or someone tripping over the power cord and putting a strain on the connection. The flimsy jacks are NOT made to withstand any abuse.

A:faint lines on screen of Dell Inspiron 5160

Try plugging it into an external monitor to see if that works properly. (if you have a desktop computer, use that monitor)

A monitor should plug into most notebooks on the back or side somewhere, and you may have to do some keystroke or change a setting in the display options panel to enable that external output. But if you can get it to display on the external monitor without any trouble, that means your screen is probably bad.

It wont let me get into the BIOS either.
I tried removing each hardware @ a time, no luck..I am currently at a point where I only have the MB+RAM+LCD connected and I still get the same problem.
When I removed the RAM, I did not hear any BEEPS

A:Dell Inspiron 5160 doesn't boot to windows

Try removing any USB devices you have connected and try again. Other than that, i can only recommend clearing your CMOS. The issue you have sounds a likely issue with the power supply unit, however without actually physically being there it's much harder to diagnose a problem. If you got a spare PSU lying around, give it a try.

Hello all,
Wanted a second opinion on a Dell Inspiron 1150 lcd not working. Friend brought it to me and said the monitor had stopped working. When you hit the power button the notebook spins up and sounds like it is running but nothing happens on the screen at all.

I tried hooking up an external monitor and hitting FN +F8 to toggle the video between the CRT and LCD but its not working. I tried shining a flashlight on the screen to see if maybe the backlight had stopped working but can't see anything with that either.

I also flipped it over and removed the back panel for the video card / lcd connection and made sure it was seated correctly. Nothing is working. The one thing I find strange is that when you turn it on, the power button itself does not light up, but the lights on the front are working and I can hear the drive spinning.

When I hook up the power cable to the back of the laptop though, the battery recharging light never comes on and the other lights go dark. Thinking maybe a bad motherboard?

Any second thoughts? Thanks in advance for advice / opinions.

Possible bad video card; but, the fact that the power light doesn't turn on worries me that it is something worse.

My Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop was working fine. Today I tried to power it up (it was plugged into adaptor) and got a quick flash of 3 green lights followed by the far right light blinking 10 times yellow/amber. Nothing else happens - the machine appears completely dead. I tried removing the battery to see if that would make any difference, but no go. I don't have a spare battery, so I can't check if that's the problem. What research I've done has turned up evidence that this may be a serious problem, but I really don't know how best to diagnose it. Battery? Motherboard? Some connection somewhere? On the hopes that it's the latter, I've got the keyboard off but frankly I'm not sure what to do next! I'm guessing that I need to disconnect/reconnect and then try to power up again. Anyone have any advice for this novice? Thank you.

Hello everyone.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150. Yesterday, I quick opened it up to give it a quick clean out. When I put it back together, it wouldn't start at all. So, I had a friend of mine who knows more about computers open it up today and look at it. He was unable to make any diagnosis whatsoever. From what he could tell, everything looked fine.

I was wondering if anyone had been experiencing problems before with this laptop and what they did. Is there any way of telling what is wrong?

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 Problems

You are very very brave, opening a laptop.

While they are hard to get into at times, even harder is the task of reassembly with it actually going at the conclusion.

Most likely its a connection problem, but you give us absolutely no clues as to what happens when you power it up as to any lights. Problem is there are several thousand possibilities. What -exactly- did you do when you opened it up, what did you disconnect etc.

Did you use any anti-static procedures (antistatic mat, wrist strap etc?)

would it be a big job to replace a motherboard in a dell inspiron 1150 and would it be worth it cost wise

A:dell inspiron 1150 not working

Where are you going to get the Motherboard for such an old laptop from? Considering that it would be almost a given that any motheboard you find for it is going to be a used motherboard, and that some pretty high level of skills would be required, it would probably cost as much or more than buying a new laptop in the long run. Repalcing the motherboard is in essence building a new computer from used parts. If you have the equipment and the skills needed to do the job yourself, it probably would not be worth it.

Any advice would be much appreciated for my computer problem below. I will try to include as much information as possible but not having a great understanding of computer systems please ask if more information is needed.

Basic Problem (detailed information below): My laptop won't write/burn onto cd or dvd when it once did with no issues. The computer still recognises, reads, plays both cd's and dvd's with no problems at all. I think something is conflicting with something else but don't know what.

To write to a dvd I am using Record Now Version 7.3

I click "Video Disk" option
(Up the top of Record Now it says _NE DVDRW 9 (D: ) DVD-R 4488 MB free)

* A pop up box appears "MyDVD has detected that DMA is turned off for one or more of the recording devices attached to the system. In order to successfully write to the device, DMA should be turned on - refer to you operating system manual or use Windows help for instruments on how to do this"

By clicking "OK" I am taken to "SONIC MyDVD.
I select "Create or modify DVD VIDEO PROJECT".
I load my project and press "burn"

The program beings planning video and audio, ordering files for video etc., then cancels and ejects disc:

Find someone with a normal PC, that has a CD-writer.
Then buy a 2.5"-3.5" adapter, take the harddisk out of the old laptop, insert in that PC, retrieve the files and burn them onto a CD.

I did a hard disk upgrade to my Dell Inspiron 5160 laptop myself. It was bought new in 2004. I read somewhere that the laptop might have a limitation with the maximum capacity of hard disk. So.. I went on to contact Dell tech support (I have extended warranty support still) and asked them what is the largest hard disk capacity I can upgrade to. I contacted them three times and I got conflicting replies from different persons who responded. Twice I was told that this model can support only upto 80GB and once I was told it can support much higher like 320GB.

However.. I went ahead and bought a 250GB one (Western Digitial Scorpio 2.5" IDE ) and installed it on the laptop and it is working just fine. It has been a month and I have not seen any problems.

Will there be a problem in the future in some way?

Guess what.. I took time to fill up the whole drive with some files and I did not notice a problems.

I have partitioned the disk into 80GB and 152GB partitions (Only 232GB was available out of marked 250GB).

So I found my old Inspiron 1150 in my garage earlier and I've decided to try and revive it. The first problem would be the battery, whenever the laptop is on charge, the orange light indicating charge is blinking. After reading the manual I determined that it was because the battery is defective and I need some help with the specifics of replacing a battery. Ex: Do I have to consider it's capacity? Rating? I'd seriously appreciate replacement batteries.
FYI: The battery model is Li-ion 6T473

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 | Need help with battery replacement

First thing to verify is that the system starts up on AC only -- without the battery.  If it does not, more than just the battery is faulty (likely the mainboard).
This system has a resale value of well under $50 -- putting more than that into a battery or repair makes very little economic sense.  It's a 13 year old budget notebook -- if it works on AC power, use it that way - - if not, recycle it.

My wife's laptop has stopped working. By the time I reached the computer this message had disappeared leaving a whiteish slightly shimmering screen.
I tried switching off and restarting but after about 15-20 seconds the whirring stopped and the computer did nothing else.
I tried to start in safe mode by tapping F8 with same result
I tried to start in safe mode holding F8 down, same result.
During the time the computer is switched on the lights flash amber a few times then green, this is repeated at regular intervals.
I would be grateful if someone can help for she seems to hold me responsible for losing all her photographs (the main purpos of this computer).

My Dell 1150 has always had some problems. First, it would over-heat and shut down, and it did this only after having it for around a year. I fixed to over-heating issue by taking out the heat sink and fan and blowing all the dust away with a can of compressed air, and also using a chill mat to set my laptop on. Now, about a month ago the power lights on my computer began flickering on and off. To fix this problem I would fiddle with the ac adapter power cord until the lights stayed on. The problem began to to the point that when the Ac Adapter was plugged in it wouldnt charge the computer at all. So, I thought this was a power adapter problem and I bought a new one but I still have the same problem. The battery will charge if I put enough pressure on the plug into the socket on the back of my computer but thats the only way it will work.

Anyway, what im thinking is that the previous over-heating has ruined the socket where the ac adapter plugs into the computer. Could this be possible? Is it easy to fix? Suggestions?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 which I was given recently. The USB ports don't register devices. Like a similar thread from several years ago The USB Contollers have been uninstalled and allowed to auto re-install. No change. Also the USB keyboard & mouse drivers have been un-installed & allowed to re-install automatically.

Device Manager reports the controllers and root hubs are working properly.

A Transcend "Jet_Flash" 2 Gb USB memory stick does show the power light. It does not however begin to flicker indicating that the USB isn't talking to the computer.

I also performed a hardware reset (i.e. power on with no battery). This also failed. There are no entries in Event Viewer indicating a failed USB registration event.

I do have drivers from Dell which have not yet been loaded (via DVD). This is my next step, installing updated drivers, and a BIOS flash. After setting a restore point of course. The computer is running XP Home. All other devices are working correctly. There are no other USB devices.

If the ports are bad would this prevent power being obtained by the USB device?

The questions are is it possible to replace the ports as I assume that they aren't built in to the M/board but attached by a cable link?

Has anyone else found a solution for this problem ?

I've been working with this Dell Inspiron laptop for a few days. I took the machine apart and applied thermal compound to the base of the heatsink (which rests on top of the CPU) and put a minimal amount on the top of the CPU itself.
The main problem with this model is that it shuts-off after less than 1/2 hour of work. It seems that an overheating problem is common with this model.
To get to the point:

Do you think upgrading to a better heatsink fan will take care of the problem?

The Motherboard seems to be working O.K., BIOS was updated, but the PC shuts down fairly quick.

I wonder if Volcano makes a good heat sink that would be compatible with this Dell model, which I.M.H.O., is a total piece of garbage.

Thanks for any input.

A:Dell Inspiron 1150 / Heatsink problem

does it just shut off or does it lag then turn off like there's something overworking the cpu? if it's a heat problem that's gonna be a tough one, try using some arctic silver 5 on the stock heatsink that stuff is known to drop a few degrees centigrade even on stock heatsinks.

Hello I just picked up a used dell inspiron 1150 from some guy off craigslist. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP on it. I installed the drivers and updates and everything was working great for a day. then the next day i turned the computer on and it can barely do anything.

Everytime you open a folder or any window it will just close the program and go back to the desktop (not just minimize it but close it). Also the mouse is screwy. Its almost as if it is constantly clicking because if you try clicking on something such as the start button in the bottom corner it will just open it then close it again right away. The only way i can get into anything is if i use the keyboard arrows and the enter key.

Im not sure if it has anything to do with it but when you boot the computer it will beep about 10 times unless you press enter.

I have been asked to look into a problem with a Dell inspiron 1150 laptop concerning an intial BSOD error which is intermittent and has happened twice and only twice in the last week according to its owner.

I witnessed the error today but unfortunately did not note any particulars of the error. What I did notice was that the error happened when the power was supplied by the AC adaptor. The hard drive emitted a continuous clicking noise as if it were trying to boot after and at the BSOD. On turning the laptop over to its underside with the BSOD on screen, I noted that the fan was still.

On the BSOD, on pressing the power on button with power supply in, the BIOS reports that there is no bootable device and does not provide any access to a HDD menu in setup. On removing the power supply jack and rebooting from the battery pack, the laptop boots perfectly.

While writing this post, the laptop has emitted two click type noises and the screen has frozen.
I am now of the humble opinion that there is an overheating problem here since the underside of the laptop is warm and the fan has stopped - - at present the laptop turns on then swiftly back off again regardless of where the power is sourced.

I have advised the owner to purchase a cool mat to alleviate the heat build up since there is a paltry sized fan supplying air flow to the components.

Is this a common problem with Dell inspiron laptops, all laptops or is there a fundamental hard drive problem approaching. I w... Read more

In this case I would call Dell tech support they may be of some help and have them check the part number of the AC Adapter for the unit. It may be the wrong one. If the unit boots which apparently it does I suggest until you verify the proper power supply that you do not use the pwoer supply, if the polarity is wrong for the computer and I think it is there could be damage to the computer, the noise you hear from the hard drive is probably the hard drive running backwards or trying to.

As for the BSOD if you can get the error message for us and/or Dell tech support it would be most helpful

Specs say I cant go past 8GB but I read the i5/HM77 can go up to 32GB? They also say to use DDR3L-1600 but when I go on crucial or new egg they say I can use DDR3L-1866? It currently has just an 8GB DDR3L-1600, dude before me was running the max 8GB on one slot and a 4GB on the other for some reason so I want to pick up a pair to utilize the dual channel. It recognized the 12GB he had in it so I figured the 16GB might work

Any insight would be great

Anyone know if Inspiron screen are compatible across different models if the the screen size is the same?
Are the pin connections the same? I'm not worryed about it fitting "just right."

I've have a 1501 and I'm looking at a buying a striped down 9400 to rebuild. The setup looks the same, however I can seem to find a straight answer poking around the web. That leads me to think no. I don't have enough knowledge of dells to say for sure.

I will post pictures the Frankenstien if it works.

I'm sure this will be lost in the long list of questions that are posted here as I type this now, but I have a question for anyone who might be able to help.

So I have an old, albeit useful Dell Inspiron 5160 I've been keeping around for the past few years, even in its quite seriously degrading condition. It has served me well since I bought it new in 2004, and I intend to get my money's worth out of it!

Recently, however, the left click button has completely dropped out. The button still clicks, but no response is given in Windows. I haven't tried taking it apart yet because I fear that doing so would be the final nail in this poor thing's coffin.

It's not running the original install of Windows XP anymore, I had to replace the hard disk fairly early on (a few days after the warranty was up. Lovely.) and didn't have the hardware to keep disk images at the time.

Anything I can do about this?

On a side note, I'd like to know why when I try and install Windows 8.1 it almost always locks up or gives me an error code and tells me I have to restart. I'm starting up from the ISO on Microsoft's website, not sure why it refuses to load into setup.

Windows 8.1 is not compatible to work with your system model - see this link - http://dell.to/1XuEwLr
Windows 8 and above OS need UEFI BIOS to work and is not compatible to work with legacy based machines. Simply put, the old hardware is not compatible to work with newer technologies.
You could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ - however, I am not sure, if we have parts available for this model.
I have checked a 3rd party Dell parts seller and they have the palmrest assembly in stock - if you choose to replace the parts yourself, you could order the parts through them - http://bit.ly/1VGd7EF
Write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Haven't used this for a few years.Took it out recently and needed to ebay a power cord.
Could not find the original. Plugged it in. Pushed in the power button. Nothing not a sound.
The 3 front lights pictured here http://www.fixya.com/support/p346866-dell_inspiron_5160_516023z8y51_pc/manual-14329/page-15
lit as follows left to right. Solid green, pale light green and solid orange. neither flash.
Could this be a bad power cord or am I going to have to crack this puppy?

A:inspiron 5160 no power up

Try removing the battery and powering up. The battery is most likely no good any more any way.

I own a Dell Inspiron 7558 se 15.6 inch 2 in 1 convertible and despite what this image from your website says the dell active pen does not work with this or any inspirons. Nor does the active stylus 750-AAGN that I just received in the mail. I want drivers and an explaination at the very least. I have now spent over 65 dollars on two of your products that say they are compatible one place on your website and are not compatible here in the real world where I'm trying to use them. Get your shirt together and reconcile this immediately.

A:dell active pen compatibility with dell inspiron 15 7558

I was considering migrating from the Inspiron 2-in-1 13" laptop to the 15.6" one, but I will wait until the answer for your question. I'm beginning to think that not every Dell 2-in-1 laptop has a digitizer capable of being operated my an active stylus pen. There're some complains about the Special Edition of the 13" 2-in-1 series. Also, sometimes the same incompatibility within a given model. Maybe Dell removes the digitizer without altering the laptop product number. Talking about a possibility.
Currently, I'm waiting for the 750-AALP Active pen to deliver. Dell said that it will work with a 7348 laptop, that has its 750-AAGN prematurely failed.

I bought a Dell Inspiron i3148-6840sLV 11.6-Inch 2 in 1 Convertible Touchscreen Laptop (Intel Core
i3 Processor, 4GB RAM) on a whim yesterday from Costco. I have 90 days to use it and return it. I paid $399.99. So far I rather like it.

This is not my main computer but I would use it as my main laptop because of portability, etc. I am wondering if an upgrade to a SSD would be worthwhile and if so, what kind, etc.

At this price, plus with the addition of the SSD, is there something a lot better I should consider or it that too subjective?

Any input welcome.

Thank you.

A:Dell Inspiron 11.6 2 in 1 with i3 Processor. SSD?

What I found is that your unit probably has a 500GB HDD but an equivalent-sized SSD may cost close to the same amount. The only time I've seen a change from HDD to SSD it worked best by doing a clean install on the SSD from the Factory Restore discs made while still running the HDD.

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 530 computer and i am waiting for it to be shipped. These are the specs.

Inspiron 530 Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB)

Memory 4GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 4DIMMs

Video Card Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100

Hard Drive 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™

Operating System Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition, English
I called Dell technical support and asked them if the new video card i purchased would work in my new system. they told me my power supply was like 250 watts or 300 watts or something. To be honest i couldnt understand them very well. i said that on the geforce box it sais i need 400 watt minimum req. the dell representative said i should be fine installing it. and that the 250 isnt watts its 250 something else. i am probably mistaken. will i be able to use my new GeForce 8800 GT 512mb graphics card? Oh yea btw my computer does have PCI-Express enabled in it. Please can anyone help me?
