high cpu, high memory, SLOW laptop

Q: high cpu, high memory, SLOW laptop

I'm really frustrated. Help me PLEASE????

Been slow for quite some time, but lately I can't accomplish anything without multiple restarts and frozen screens. Several months ago I had to reinstall windows, and performance seemed to decline after that. Pulled up the task manager and noticed both cpu and memory were almost 100%... that cant be good, right?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My daughters Asus k55n laptop (AMD a8-4500m 1.9 GHz 4GB memory 500GB hard drive, was win 8 then win 8.1 and now win 10, Kaspersky internet security) took sooo long to boot up. She has STEAM with saved games and photo's that she doesn't want me to delete. I started uninstalling a bunch of misc. programs that are not necessary at this time, just to clean things up a bit. Things DID run better, but still not acceptable.. I ran a Kaspersky scan and found nothing. I checked and ran a defrag (it didn't appear to need it, as it was only 3% fragmented), I downloaded a fresh version of Malwarebytes and updated, then ran. Monitoring the scan, noticed the time was ticking away but the files stopped counting up. I just let it do its thing and 20 minutes later, was at the same file and the file counter was the same. I tried to open a browser and it took a few minutes to open. Appears to have partitioned hard drive. (C:)141 GB used out of 207GB,  (D:) 126mb used out of 258 GB... I don't know why this would need a partition of almost half of the HD. Noticed in TASK MANAGER the CPU and the MEMORY were spiking very high at times. I'm thinking possible virus or some other "evil" lurking in this computer.... Would appreciate any help. Thanks

A:Slow laptop. noticed high CPU and memory usage

ALSO,   Assuming it's a good idea,  how would I get rid of the virtually unused (D:) drive or just make it a fraction of the present size since it appears to be wasted HD space and possible causing excessive "file swapping" in the (C:) drive ?

Recently I have been seeing 100% CPU and nearly the same Memory numbers when I am doing virtually nothing on my computer.  I am also getting messages telling me to shut down programs because of the high memory usage...but I don't actually have much running.  Additionally, when I try to restart the computer, I am often told that an app is running preventing the restart but I can not tell what app that is...Restart sometimes will work nevertheless, other times I have to manually shut the computer down and then manually start it up again.  Also, sometimes after restart I am presented with two users to choose from, my regular user and a "user" that I have no idea what it is but it is called "postgres."

Also, though I do not know if this is related to this problem or not, I use Norton Internet Security, including its anti-spam program.  I use it with Outlook 2013.  Sometimes Norton fails to designate spam emails with its usual designation of "Norton Anti Spam."   What is weird about this is that the problem turns up intermittently in that a group of emails will be properly marked...but 30 minutes later the next group won't be.

Thanks for your help, Ken

I receive the same alert from AVG whether I am using IExplorer, Firefox or Chrome. Also, in the task manager the CPU usage is sometimes almost 50% and it's always the internet browser I have open. Computer seems a bit sluggish. I have also been having trouble viewing videos on surfline.com (but not anywhere else). I am more than happy to delete any programs you think would be adding to the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Toshiba Satellite  running windows 7. I got the computer from my father and had to remove a lot of malware and games. I wish i could do a factory reset but i do not have any of the factory disks. It seems like there are a lot of processes running and the physical memory is almost always at 100%. Any help would greatly be appreciated . Thanks in advance.

A:Toshiba laptop running super slow. physical memory running high

You can first try this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/

Then you can try removing all the junk files on it using CCleaner or BleachBit or something similar. If that doesn't help, I would recommend dual booting this PC with Ubuntu 14.04. I actually published a tutorial on doing that here:
http://69.107.93.24/Blog/52015/

You could then use that as your primary OS.

Hi,

My wifes Win7 PC became sluggish with 100% cpu utilization, high disk activity, and high network activity (20% or so on 100Mbit LAN). Based on another post I ran the eset poweliks cleaner and it reported that it was found. The log it generated is attached (zipped to reduce size)

It still has the same problems. If I disconnect the LAN it becomes responsive. I have left the LAN disconnected. The Mcafee scan does not find anything. Malwarebytes Antimalware did not find anything.

I ran dds, the output files are attached.

Please advise the steps needed to clean her computer.

Thank you,
Howard

Recently, I reinstalled my Netgear wna3100 driver. Ever since then, I've been experiencing problems with high pings in games where I normally never had problems with. Pages load slowly even just the home page of Google.

I've attached my ipconfig picture. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

A:High download speed and signal, high ping in games, slow page loads

To Disable Selective Suspend:

open the control panel
go to power options (you may have to set view to small icons)
click change plan settings
in the window that opens:
click change plan settings
click change advanced power settings, expand usb and ensure usb selective suspend is disabled.

I would also (while the device is plugged in)
go into the control panel - system - device manager - click the properties for it and make sure it's set to always on there as well.
I don't think the ipconfig can tell us much here since it's a data rate problem of some sort and not a actual connection problem from the sound of it.

The two things I mention above will hopefully keep your system from putting the device in 'low power mode' which may , or may not help your current problem.

I'm also curious if your system has recently slowed down in any other ways?

About a year ago, I noticed that my computer was running slow (both online and off) and that the explorer.exe process listed in the Windows Task Manager was usually running very high. Windows Explorer seemed to crash a lot as well. A few months ago, I attempted to install Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 on my computer and before the install completed a warning window popped up saying something like 'there is already another instance of Kaspersky running' (which was not the case since this was the first time I had ever attempted to install Kaspersky software) and the install failed. When I rebooted my computer, I got the blue screen of death for a few seconds and then Windows booted with a message saying that Windows had recovered from a serious problem. Since recovering from whatever happened after the failed Kaspersky install, my computer is slower than ever and the Task Manager still shows a high CPU usage even though the System Idle Process is high and there isn't any processes listed that are using much CPU time at all.

I just scanned my system with the latest updated versions of AdAware, Spybot S&D, SuperAntiSpyware, and Avira AntiVir. All of them found nothing. I then cleaned my computer with CCleaner and ran HijackThis.

It seems that I've been getting low memory issues ever since upgrading to Win10, but I'm not 100% certain if thats the issue. I thought about uprading to 16gb ram, but I'd like to know if theres some other fix for this. I can't multitask as I used to be able to. Sometimes problems occur just running 8 tabs on chrome and a game(Blade and Soul). The numbers just don't seem to add up.

Hello svader55 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

On the first impression I would have to suspect the problem is with the upgrade itself where you might end needing to see a Clean Install of 10. First however you can try a few things out to see if this is only a minor glitch. On an older 7 model by HP the upgrade seen last summer was a disaster waiting to happen which I had enticipated and saw an immediate clean install to follow! Of after going from the 32bit 7 Home Premium to 10 Home x86 I subsequently changed that with a second fresh install the 64bit Windows.

The initial tool would be the System File Checker you would run from the Command prompt(admin) option when right clicking on the Start button. You simply scroll down to that option to see the new window open up. At the dos like prompt you then simply type in "sfc /scannow" and press enter to get the tool underway.

The tool will then scan all the important system files and if finding one or more corrupt or missing will often be able to replace them but not all unfortunately from cab files tucked away on the local drive. With previous versions the rec for having the Windows dvd in the driver was made in case the SFC had to extract something from the Windows media there if the problem was more involved. This is why the suggestion for the possible need to see a fresh clean install of 10 is being made here.

Unfortunately buggy upgrades are all too common regardless of which version is being upgraded over. But you li... Read more

This problem began yesterday. I noticed my CPU was at 90C constantly with very high CPU usage (>50%). I had no major programs running. I rebooted several times and the program persisted.

1. I went into safe mode and everything was normal. So this rules out hardware issues.
2. I reformatted and everything was normal..but then after installing these few programs, the problem began again.

Hello. First off, having utorrent effectively craps you out on this forum since it has a bad rep. Suggest you remove it and come back, start a new thread. That said, if you're familiar with Task Manager, check the CPU percentage on the processes tab (click CPU column to sort). This may help pinpoint which app(s) are whack.

Hiya - Usual story .. my PC has suddenly become very slow, with high CPU % usage (100%) and high memory usage (never seems to go below 50% even when doing nothing!).

I have solved the high CPU usage by checking the processes running and found that my Western Digital back solution was using 67% - I only use this once a week for a full system backup so closed that and removed it from Startup.

I am using Avast! and MalwareBytes protection. I have a scheduled full de-frag once a week with only 1% defrag on both my disks currently.

I am unsure if this slowdown is being caused by a virus / malware or if it may possibly may be a hardware issue with my RAM or hard drive, any help would be greatly appreciated as its driving me mad !!

Many thanks

Hello,

My computer runs on average, 70-80 processes which use almost all of my available memory. I just recently installed 4 GB of RAM since before, I had 2 GB, and almost always it used 90% of it. Now that I upgraded, there is little improvement and it uses even more now because it can, using around 70% when I am surfing on Firefox. There is also a slow start up, I can't help but think that something's bogging down my computer.

Hi all, i,m new here hoping you can help me.

My laptop (HP G62 running windows 7) takes a long time to boot and is very slow and almost impossible to use. The physical memory usage is very high all the time at around 90%.

The computer works fine in safe mode.

I notice a high memory usage of svchost.exe which can be up to 300 000k...........could this be the problem?

7 days ago it was infected by a Trojan Horse named Generic31.apje. I followed the path named and deleted the file from c:\ProgramData\browsermanager....................after doing this I completed a scan and the results where that the machine was clean. Could this still be an issue?

Thanks hope someone can help me

Recently without any new hardware or software changes my computer's been running slow (i7 [email protected]) and memory usage is really high like 70% on idle with 6MB of RAM. I go do some browsing or something and the computer is fine. I watch a video, and the thing eventually slows down to a crawl, unable to properly play the video file, skips frames. When I go to the computer and do something the video suddenly fixes it self, sorta like if it goes idle the computer starts something else, by which I've heard some viruses do that. I've ran all sort of antivirus and antimalware programs (NOD32, Ad-aware, malwarebytes, AVG, etc...) and nothing.

Here is the DDS diagnostic. Is there anything else I might want to do?

(Sony Vaio) has been extremely slow lately, which I am assuming because the physical memory is constantly high (up to 95% at times) even when I am not doing anything. Below are some screenshots for information. I have tried killing some processes but cannot find one process that is a major problem. 52 Processes are currently running which doesnt seem so excessive. Is it normal to have so much memory reserved for hardware? If there is anymore information I need to post please let me know, I appreciate any help I can get.

Hi Guys!

Could someone please help me with the following problem...

I recently noticed that my pc became really slow and the Memory usage (checked through task manager) went up to around 80% after a normal boot up. I dont have a lot of programs running, just the standard ones that came with Win7 and Kaspersky 2012 internet security + Adaware. I only use my computer for work and internet (no games or anything). It used to run very well but as soon as a new neighbout arrived at our house it slowed down and started bahaving very strange.

I also noticed that many processes in the task manager show double entries, like unsecapp.exe, avp.exe, csrss.exe and the list goes on. This coincided with the onset of the problems.

I have 2GB of RAM and a 2.3GHz i5 processor.

Could someone please tell me what happened and why this sudden loss in performance and high memory usage?

Any help really appreciated!

John.

In November of last year, my laptop suffered water damage and I needed my hard-drive replaced.

Since then, I have noticed worse performance when playing games, even online Flash ones, and generally much slower Internet, even with videos. One difference from before is the high memory usage; it's running at around 60% with only the browser open, which corresponds to 1.9 GB. When it gets in excess of 70%, things really lag.

Hello,

I'm a newbie trying to fix a friends computer. She just bought it used and it was working fine until she downloaded something that she thought would allow her to watch TV on her computer. I tried a few things listed below, but didn't solve the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll continue to look online for troubleshooting info. I'll post if I find it.

Problem: Very Slow, High Physical Memory % (80's to 90's) and CPU Usage (mostly 3-10%, but occasionally 100%). NOTE: The computer runs fine for few minutes after first turned on, then has the aforementioned issues a few minutes after.

I Tried: Used Malwarebytes - I attached the log - and it found some things (My Web Search files) which I had it delete. I also used MSConfi to turn off unnecessary start up stuff.

Computer:
Compaq Presario CQ62, Windows 7 Home Premium x64, Celeron 2.2Ghz, 2 GB RAM, Avast Antivirus.

Thank you.

Hi,
It wasn't too long ago that I had a problem with my computer(hp 2000 notebook) making a grinding noise where the fan was and I had taken it upon my self to "fix" the issue of a wire poking into the fan area by taking it apart. I had put everything back together just the way it was but, after I had turned the computer back on after that, it was taking a long time to load up my applications and such. It was started to irritate me so much, I factory reset my computer twice, only saving a handful of my original programs. The factory resets did not help, and Norton reinstalled and continued telling me I had high disk usage and I'm just like "from what!?". So Iv'e tried pushing through these slower speeds but I find chrome freezing and my applications slowing down on me and it's the worst my laptop has been. My laptop is so far from being the best but, before it was an okay deal for just browsing or using animation software. I uninstalled Norton because I've read it's slows your pc's performance but, that has not even effected my computer a bit since it was uninstalled. I looked online for other solutions like checking task manager for suspicious disk usage but there's nothing there that looks threatening and I even stopped that superfetch thing but nothing happened either. When I gotten this pc like 3 or so years ago, it was nothing like it was now with the default programs and settings.

I provided some pc info and what would happen during a startup... Read more

A:High disk and memory usage slowing my laptop.

the taskmanager showing running software doesnt help very much at the top you can click on disk or cpu to sort the list if the disk is 100% click the disk so we can see whats taking all the usage.
The other thing is your running a 64 bit o/s with only 2 gig of ram to make use of a 64 bit you want 4 gig or more so a memory upgrade is the best option.
Are you running win8 or 8.1? Your best move is to do the free upgrade form 8.1 to win10 as its min memory for a 64 bit system is 2 gig so it will work a lot better for you

I had put in a cd (should be free of viruses, its a maths revision cd from an exam board) and was using it for about 10 minutes when beeping which was happening every 0.5 seconds occurred. Muting the laptop and decreasing volume would mute or decrease the sound (therefore it isn't a hardware beep tone, right?).

I started to panic so was about to shut it down when i thought i would look in the task manager. I noticed that taskhost.exe was my most intensive application which is unusual.

What could it be? a bug? a virus?
If you suspect a virus i am not going to clean it, I'm going to wipe my laptop as i have other troubles too.
If it is a virus, why would it make beep tones only? Surely a message would accompany it to encourage the user to buy a 'fix' for it or there would be no beep at all to avoid detection.

A:Laptop beeping and taskhost.exe had a high memory usage?

Hi what are the other issues we need all the info or we could go round in circles trying to fix things,as to the beeping does it have a pattern ie 1-2-1 some antivirus programs have been known to give off beeps

Less than a week ago, I used Control Panel to disable Google Chrome automatic update checking & installations. I did this because Chrome sometimes automatically checks for available updates and ties nearly all of computer resources while some unknown process associated with Chrome occurs. I thought this was because of the automatic update checking and installing, which why I turned this off (through Scheduling Tasks, in Control Panel.)

Just a couple of hours ago, I fresh-started the computer (Windows XP, s.p.3, 2.0GHz processor, 512MB RAM, Norton Internet Security 2011, Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 7.01, Google Chrome (belief up to date, 15.0.874.121 m)), visited internet using Internet Explorer - NOT CHROME - and had not yet even opened chrome during this user session. A few minutes after the internet usage, the computer became suddenly very, very, very slow, and Norton File Insight indicated high memory usage from Google Chrome. It reported "setup.exe" as the file causing this. I clicked to see where file is this was file, and after maybe 5 or 7 minutes, a folder opened in response indicating C:....CR_2D830.tmp\setup.exe.

When the Chrome business finished, apparantly not accomplishing anything that I could tell, computer responsiveness returned to normal.

I just wonder, is my computer so affected not really well suited for Google Chrome Browser? Also, must I completely uninstall Chrome in order to make sure this unknown process regarding Chrome... Read more

Hi All

I`m having serious problems with my windows 7 machine. It started yesterday when I was getting blank screens. TOday I turned on and its running very slow, freezing up and i noticed an svchost.exe process was using about 6gb of ram. I had to reboot about 5 times just to geta taskmanager up and then it would freeze up again.
I tried a windows restore to about 4 days before incase it was some virus but it hasnt fixed the problem. Everything is ok in safe mode and i`ve tried running dr web virus checker aswell as installing norton antivirus and malwarebytes on an old windows xp installation on the same pc but theyre not finding anything.

Any ideas? Really dont fancy having to reinstall windows.

Thanks

Hi

This has been happening a lot recently, been experiencing a really slow internet browsing on both fire fox and interenet explorer 7 and whenever i'm using firefox it sometimes freezes than works again after a few secs, also having a hard time loading videos on youtube where videos stop loading. Was thinking maybe related to cpu and memory usage, checked windows task manager and see that sometimes have high memory usage like yesterday svchost.exe was running at around 60 000k, ran both spybot and ad-aware but only found cookies related nothing big.

So don't know if memory related problem or infected computer, would really appreciate for someone to have a look at my log and tell me the problem.

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

Techs,
Not sure what to do next on a Dell Optiplex 390 W7 Pro desktop with two symptoms:
1. High CPU usage-25% for svchost.exe ( even in safe mode) - Plug and play is the offending service
2. high memory use for svchost.exe 112mb - (only in normal boot)- Is 112mb high? Not sure of the offending service. Attached services are Desktop Session Mgr, RDP Session Mgr, Distributed Link Tracking Client Superfetch, Prog Compatibility Asst , Network Connections, Offline files, or Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.  I suspect Superfetch because it seems to be only service in group with CPU usage.
I used Task Manger and Resource Monitor to gather the info above.

Other symptoms:
1. Device Manager takes forever to come up ( even in safe mode)
2. Normal reboot takes forever

Things tried to fix:
1. sfc /scannow - OK no corrupt files
2. Malwarebytes Scan -OK no infections
3. Malwarebytes RootKit scan -OK no infections
4. TDSKiller RootKit scan - OK no infections
5. Rkill - OK no infections

Any ideas to address the CPU usage I guess as that seems to be my worst problem.
Thanks in advance,
b.groves

Hello   So I have a few issues....

1. Computer running slow and lagging a lot
2. SVC Host high memory usage
3. DLLHost high memory usage
4. MBAM stops multiple sources from entering through it's firewall 3-5 times every hour
5. Wave volume lowers automatically every 2-5 minutes
6. Internet Explorer freezes regularly and lags often to the point that it needs to be shut down
7. Can not have more then one instance of Internet Explorer running nor multiple tabs.

So I have tried following the instructions in the other forum on how to speed the internet up and your computer, but I belive I only made things worse.

I have run Mbam, Norton, Eset, Roguekiller and a few other antivirus/maleware detectors. They found a few viruses. Eset repeatedly would send up a notification stating SVCHost.exe was a trojan.... however when I scanned it would never detect more then that. I would quarantine and then it would come back a little later. I am still having issues so I am assuming there are still some left. Any assistance would be great.

Hi,
My laptop(Win7) takes a long time to bootup. First it takes me to the windows logo screen and then it goes to a black screen and stays there for atleast two minutes before it gives me the login screen and then it takes another two minutes or so to before the desktop is loaded up. Also when I scan the computer with bitdefender for viruses, it takes around a day to do a full system scan and did not find any viruses. I have downloaded iobit driver updater and updated all the drivers, but that did not fix the problem. I have also installed iobit malware fighter and malwarebytes anti-malware and both scan came back negetive, The iobit performance monitor shows that the ram useage is 61% or higher all the time.

Any suggestions to fix this would be greatly appreciated

I'm posting for a computer that is not my own, so details of history are not always known. (This is my daughter's pc). I believe this may be a laptop we replaced a cracked screen on, but that should not be causing the problems it's having - as the problems cropped up weeks or months later...but I wanted to mention that on the off chance that it is still somehow the culprit.

The computer is an HP, says Altec, G62, AMD Turion II P540 Dual Core Processor, 3.00 GB of which, 162GB is free at the moment. Runs Windows 7.

This laptop shut down unexpectedly QUITE awhile ago (more than a year ago possibly two) and we weren't able to get it running again. It gave one CMOS Checksum error when we tried to revive it - The note I have here says 'invalid, CMOS reset 502', if that means anything to you. Then it went to a black screen but the mouse was visible - and after shut down a second time nothing came up and the pc would not boot up at all. This laptop was set aside and because of it's age we simply got my daughter a new one instead of paying tech people to look at it, since they couldn't guarantee they could fix it anyway.

However - I came upon this laptop in the moving box and being the hopeful type, I plugged it in one last time after pulling out the battery and holding down the power button. We'd already tried that trick a few dozen times so I've no clue why this computer is finally working now. I'd like to get it fully fu... Read more

Hi, i have recently (around 4 weeks ago) upgraded my laptop to windows 8.1 and I have now found the laptop running very slow. Most of the times I am waiting around for the apps to start up, or waiting for it to respond to my actions i.e. typing, coding, editing images and its got to a stage where I am really getting frustrated.

I have a Sony Vaio SVS13 Model with the following spec:

Operating System
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 3540M @ 3.00GHz
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM
6.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
Sony Corporation VAIO (N/A)
Graphics
VAIO_LCD ([email protected])
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (Sony)
1024MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE (Sony)
Storage
698GB TOSHIBA MQ01ABD075H (SATA)
Security
Kaspersky Anti-Virus

The problem I find is that (using Advanced System Care, part of Sony installed software) this shows me that the CPU is always running at 100% and I thought its time I try and work out what the problem is, as I keep getting delayed doing my uni work and im ending up spending more time on work.

I have read a few forums saying that Kaspersky tends to use up alot of CPU but i didnt find this issue when I had Windows 8 so not sure how to fix or find what the problem is.

If somebody could please advise would really appreciate it as would help me out alot.

Thanks in advance.
