Q: windows install help needed

hello when i run the windows xp installation it tell me that there is no harddisks on the system please help me

Preferred Solution: windows install help needed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi everyone,
I am SO SO confused by how windows 8 works now without the sticker key on new laptops. I've searched all over the internet and all I can find are dumb articles telling users to use the manufacturers recovery image. I DON'T WANT THAT. I was hoping that someone could please give me detailed and explained instructions on how to do a CLEAN install of Windows 8.
My new windows 8 has NO sticker key on the bottom so my understanding is that it's stored on the bios? Is this correct? So my question is, is if I get an ISO of windows 8 and install it, will it automatically recognize the key or is the key only set up to be recognized by the PC manufacturers crapware filled image? ALSO, if thats the case, can I use a 3rd party product to pull my key and then use that with the clean ISO? Lastly, where can I download a clean ISO of windows 8? I know you can download official windows 7 ISO's, but i cannot seem to find an official windows 8 iso. I have no desire to download a torrent or from some shady website, I just want an official ISO.
Thank you soo soo much for your help in advance.

Welcome to EightForums

Have you made the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disks?

We always assume you have made your Recovery Disks using the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Media Creator app the first day you had your new PC.
& made the Startup Repair CD. (Windows 8 only)
Recovery Drive - Create with USB Flash Drive in Windows 8
System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8 (Windows 8 only)

I would recommend you making the OEM manufacturer's Recovery DVD's or USB drive.
You can order the Microsoft official OEM Recovery disks from the OEM manufacturer's website.

There are NO official downloads for windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 ISO's for OEM manufacturer's installs.

Hi I have just replaced Windows Vista with Windows XP Pro on the following computer:-Acer Aspire M1100Now I am stuck at the 'drivers' stage, and would greatly appreciate some help. Note that I am fairly novice in the field of computer hardware, drivers, BIOS and the like. Here is where I am at: XP is now successfully installed on the computer. First thing I notice is the desktop screen is stretched even on what looks like the 'correct' resolution [1280 x 1024 on 19" wide monitor] - but of course no graphics drivers are yet installed on the new OS.The graphics hardware inside the computer is: ATI Radeon X1250 - I understand this is 'integrated graphics'?. After hours of searching [including ATI website drivers page], it seems there is no specific driver for this graphics card and Windows XP. However I did find this 'ATI Catalyst 8.2 Display Driver for Windows Vista (32 bit)' which mentions XP in its spec:-http://www.softwaredriverdownload.com/ati_...sta_driver.htmlAfter attempting to install however, there were installation failure messages [I forget exactly, something about 'install manager' failing I think]. After going past the few error messages and allowing 'installation' to continue, it seemed at the end that nothing had been installed at all.But before I deal with the graphics card/drivers, I learned from some Googling that the first drivers I should be concerned with is for Motherboard. I've had a look in Device M... Read more

A:Windows XP new install - drivers help needed

OK, I've had to go ahead and try to get this computer working.

From the drivers mentioned above I obtained from the Acer website, I have done the following:-

- Attempted install of the Acer VGA driver. This is also described as a 'catalyst display driver'. Installation successful. However, on rebooting machine, nothing has changed graphically - looking in Device Manager, there is no entry for 'Display Adapters', and running DXDIAG says in Display/Device that there is none available. BUT... I don't quite understand if my ATI Radeon X1250 would register as an 'external device/graphics adapter', since I believe it is an 'integrated graphics card'?

- Attempted install of the Acer Realtek HD sound driver. Success - the computer now has sound, so that is at least one thing out of the way

What I am still in the dark about, is the state of the computer's graphics - I do not know if they are running 'correctly' or if another driver needs to be installed to unlock the X1250 [or is it now running, but it doesn't show up in Device Manager because of its 'integrated' status'?].

Tomorrow I will be able to hook it up to the web, providing there are no problems installing the modem driver! Once on the web I guess I can surf and see how the graphics fare compared with when it used to run on Vista.

Would still like some clarification on the motherboard and BIOS. Is it likely I need to install a driver for my motherbo... Read more

Hi All,
I've run out of space on an old small SSD, and have decided a clean start is probably the best way to go in setting up Windows 7 64 bit on my shiny new bigger SSD.

I plugged in the new drive, successfully installed Windows 7, and can boot to it. Great start!

Thing is though, it's installed with a bunch of generic drivers for things like the display, (which came up in 800x600! No option for the HD I know it is capable of...), and in the case of the network card, nothing at all. Which is making it rather difficult to get the right drivers, as I can't get online from the new install!

I'm sure there are other drivers too, for things like the sound card for example.

Is there a relatively easy way to get drivers for all my hardware in? I can still get at the drives with the old install on, if that helps. And I must admit I'm a bit surprised the network connection is not working as there's nothing fancy about the network card I am aware of.

At the most basic, advice on the best way to get online fast would be a big help, but if there is a good way to get the other drivers fast, that would be seriously useful!

Thanks in advance,

Got a new SSD shown below. I installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit and doing so system reboots normally. Now in Windows first time to actually install updates and software, but I installed the motherboard chipset and rebooted. All is still okay. Now I go into IExplorer to do the first group of MS updates. So they load okay and system then wants to reboot. Now I have the problem where the system cannot get to the monitor.

This system has had Windows 7 re-installed in the past at least twice with no problems.
But now the only difference is the below SSD. So I am wondering if the SSD is causing the problem.
Also in the mb bios I am using the selection ACHI as I believe that I should be using for an SSD.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Help needed - Cannot re-install Windows 7 Home Premium on an SSD.

Hello, yes ACHI should be selected in BIOS before Win 7 is loaded, not after.
If you have installed Chipset and then MS Updates then the Updates are more than likely your problem.
Updates may have installed a Video driver not compatible.
Start the PC in Safe Mode and go to Device Manager and roll back the Graphics driver then re-boot normal.
If this is not helpful then start in Safe Mode and use your System Restore to a date before the problem started.

My HP Pavilion Elite 110F had so many issues that I decided to do a clean install of Windows 7 so I could move forward and only download programs that I need currently.

The clean install went fabulously, however, now I have 135 Important Updates and 57 Optional updates. There are 20+ Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 R2 SP1 for X64 systems updates, 50+ security updates, and 15 or so various other updates Windows 7 updates. These don't include all the other "important" updates.

It seems that I would be back in the same boat with all these various updates for each category as previously my Programs list was full of all kinds of different Microsoft versions of updates that were never removed with the Cleanup Utility. Isn't there a current not-bloating list of updates that I install? How can I locate the cleanest list of most recent updates that will keep my system running?

A:Clean install of Windows 7 - what updates are needed?

I'm not aware of a "non-bloating list of updates" and would be suspicious of any such list I might find.

Your HP had many issues.

Do you have any particular reason to think that Windows Update was the source of any of those issues?

Windows Update isn't perfect, but in my experience it's not a leading suspect on a PC with "issues".

I'd think about doing them in batches, first concentrating on those rated critical and most likely taking all of that class, in batches.

Then move on to those rated important, again in batches. Probably taking them all, in batches.

The optional ones I'd evaluate one by one, accepting any that appeared to apply and possibly rejecting the others. I wouldn't necessarily accept an optional update for something that was working well or that applied to some functionality I never used.

I'd guess your prior issues have other causes unless you have specific reason to believe to the contrary. I don't know what your habits are regarding PC maintenance and don't know if you have any hardware issues.

I'm having some issue with my computer, and to solve that I'm trying to install Windows 7 again. I've yet NOT managed to do that ever on this computer, which is about 1 year old. There's no multiboot or whatever, BUT, there is a RAID controller active, and RAID is actually enabled. Actually, now that I threw away all content, I can easily switch RAID to non-RAID, but that doesn't seem to help THIS problem:

I have a LEGAL copy of Windows7, which SHOULD be the Windows I had running. I never installed Windows initially since the shop did that for me.

OK, when I try to install Windows, at some point it says the device drivers are not present, and thus Windows cannot install. It keeps looping into the same error, if I boot from DVD.

I DID use my DVD drive on Windows when I was able to use my computer, I never had any issue with that. I don't understand what driver I need, when I am installing from DVD.

Either he totally cannot read the DVD, but how do I end up in Windows screen then ? Obviously, Windows want to start installation, but then fails over something. Maybe the disk is not valid (it is new though).

Any advice here ?

I disabled RAID for the moment, but that does not help anything. Before the re-installation, this setup (BIOS Intel Raid storage) did report an issue with 1 of both disks, but that error is gone now.

It's not clear if Windows is an issue here, but a clean system reacting this way, obviously something is wrong.

SATA setting have been changed from RAID to ...?

Boot from win7 install DVD and do shift+f10 . See Command Prompt at Startup

In command prompt do:

list disk
Do you see both disks (that were RAID)? Look at the disk size , so you know what is what. Assume it's disk 7 and 8 (replace with actual disk numbers!)

select disk 7
select disk 8
What happens?

Hi guys,

I recently bought a new motherboard for my Dads PC. I got the ABIT NF7, but now after installing it, I can't install Windows. I havn't got a bootable CD so I've been using the Windows XP startup disks. I've used two different sets but the PC freezes in exactly the same place with both sets, and that's right at the end (when I put in disk 6, its reads it for a second, then freezes) when the installation is about to start. I know it's not a prblem with the startup disks as I have used them before. I've also tried installing Windows 2000, but again, the PC freezes just before the installation starts.

I don't know what is wrong, so if you guys think you know or have any suggestions, could you please tell me as I'm getting a little ****ed off here. . .

I'm using a Athlon XP 1800+ with 512MB DDR400 PC3200 RAM just incase you need to know.

Hello there, I recently did a clean install of Windows 8.1 on my Lenovo G50-45 and I'm wondering which drivers I need to install and how I can access them? When viewing my Device Manager, the 4 yellow exclamation errors I'm seeing are for the following:1. Network Controller2. PCI Encryption/Decryption Controller3. Unknown device4. USB2.0-CRW Since it was a clean install, I'm wondering if there are drivers I may need in addition to the ones shown in the Device Manager. For example, when I push the brightening/dimming function on the keyboard, nothing happens. The volume function works, but I have no tried playing music or listening to anything to test it.  I tried searching for the drivers on the Lenovo site, but may have the incorrect Serial number, as no results come up. I purchased the laptop from a previous user, so they may have attached the incorrect Serial number.  Any help would be appreciated so I can set up my laptop.  Thank you!Keith

I've had severe problems with the icons and taskbar on my Win 7 desktop since I replaced the hard drive a few weeks ago. I've tried various troubleshooting methods (restore points ... sfc scan ... malwarebytes), but nothing has brought things back to full working order. The PC is a couple of years old and had been fine before this.

The problems are so various that I haven't been able to determine if my user accounts are corrupt or the Win7 files are corrupt. As examples, my main account is the only one that ever shows desktop icons. Even the PC's built-in Administrator account never shows any icons on the desktop or taskbar. And the Control Panel never shows any icons, regardless of which user is logged on. All my 8 or 9 installed applications run OK, but none of them show icons or graphics in their help files, only text.

Anyway, I'd like to entirely replace the Win7 on C:, but keep the contents of the D: and E: drives that I set up. When I read about repairs and reinstalls, I'm unsure how much of the hard drive will be erased. I'm also a bit strapped by the fact that the Win7 "copy" that I have was written from the PC back when it was new (pre-SP1 and pre-new-drive). I seem to recall it claims to overwrite everything.

So, what is my best course of action? ... one that leads to a reliable O/S in the fewest steps.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ok let me explain my problems..

I purchased some new hardward to build a new PC. here are some links to it

Also i bought an ATX case / windows XP / and another hard drive,

I installed all the hardware into the new case and it all works. I wanted to keep my old hard drive as the main one as it all all my files and content on it so we where trying to setup all the new hardware on it. We got it all working apart from the 1st new hard drive i purchased. We could see it in Device manager but not in My computer and i couldnt add any content to it.

So some told me I Should do a fresh install on a new hard drive so i went out and bought a new hard drive. Disconnected the other 2 and tried to install windows on it. But it wont install. I set the BIOS to Default. The screen says "Windows Setup" and along the bottom is says "Setup is loading file (Hardware abstruction layer)... " it never gets past this point and hangs there till i reset the PC and just keeps on hanging there....

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong?

Any help would be great.

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 531 at a garage sale. It came with a version of Vista that was cluttered up, full of viruses and in general full of problems. I don't like Vista anyway (I generally run Kubuntu or Mint for most of my computing), and I have a generic MS Windows XP sp2 install pack laying around. After installing XP, I loaded my linux OS's as usual, with no problems. The problem is with the XP install. It appears that Dell, in it's wisdom, made the Inspiron 531 specifically for Vista and the standard drivers available on Dell's site don't function well with XP (can't connect with the Web, graphics "roll-over" with the bottom showing at the top of the screen, and generally don't work well with the onboard graphics card 'Nvidia GeForce 6150'). Does anyone know a scource for drivers that will 'work-around' this issue? I know that the order the drivers are installed is important, so I wiped the drive and made a fresh install of Windows with no changes. The system setup is: Dell Inspiron 531 with AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ running at 2.0 Ghz with 4Gbs memory. I am set up for triple boot on two HDDs running Kubuntu 12.10 and Linux Mint Maya on one 260gb Hd and Windows XP Home edition Sp2 on a 40Gb Hd. I've searched this site and seen mention of a couple of users with XP running on this model, but no mention of the preferred drivers. Dell has been no help, as this is a discontinued model. Hello friends,

I'm having problems trying to install Windows 7, hopefully you guys can help.

I own an HP Stream 13 like this one here: Amazon.com: HP Stream 13.3-Inch Laptop (Intel Celeron, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB SSD, Cobalt Blue) with Office 365 Personal for One Year: Computers & Accessories

It came with Windows 10 pre-installed. I get free access to Windows products via dreamspark through my school. I decided I wanted to download Windows 7. I got through the setup and ended up at the partition part where it says:
"Windows cannot be installed to this disk. Windows needs the driver for device [Intel SD Host Controller]. Click 'Load Driver' and load the required device driver."
I have tried downloading Intel's automatic driver detection utility thing, but that did not work.

I have also tried Shift+F10, diskpart, list disk, sel disk 0, clean. But it came with an error in the command prompt that says:
"Virtual Disk Service error:
Clean is not allowed on the disk containing the current boot,
system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume."

I'm at a stump. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Uni,
W7 likes to be installed as No1, even on a virtual Drive.
Your best bet is to install 7 and make 10 the virtual,
if you only have 2gb Ram, then you'll have to use 32bit versions, or buy more Ram

The drivers should available via the HP website for that model

Go to Microsofts site and locate the MediaCreationTool.exe file (Tool) for Windows 10.You can created a DVD or USB to boot and run an in place install which does not delete data or applications either along with all updates. It takes a while but is the best solution. Just make certain you are selecting the correct build to match your system and version you had previously. EG Home 64 or 32bit, or Pro etc.

Is there a link here or elsewhere for a Windows 7 Professional [I own the MS blue 64 & 32-bit set] "dirty install?"
Reason for asking: Both of my OS image files are corrupt; Since I cannot do a full-image restore with either image -- an error eventually crops up & everything comes to a screetching halt -- even after doing Folder by Folder by Folder restoration, using both images," computer posts, but never boots into Windows Safe or UnSafe modes. Hi everyone,
I am in need of help to cure a problem that I have brought on myself, but am not knowledgeable enough to sort out.

Here's my problem:

Back a few years ago I bought a new Dell Inspiron 531. Had Vista on it. And I hated it so much that I never used Vista.
I installed a second SATA hard drive on it and installed XP, which I really understand. Then the meomry battery in the computer failed without my knowledge. I had been able to boot to either system before the batt failure. But no longer.

Next I installed Win 7 over Vista, or so I thought. Didn't happen as planned. It installed 7 over XP.Now I have Win7 that will not run without locking up all the time on one hard drive, and Vista on the other. I want to rid myself of BOTH systems and
start a clean slate.

I want to totally Clean both Hard Drives and then install XP Pro on one of the HD's and put the computer
back into service, using the second drive for back up.
I understand how to set up the bios to look for a disc first. But I don't have a clue as to how to completely clean
both HD's to complete a "clean" install.

I have an install disc for XP pro with key. But I need instructions of how to totally clean the two HD's before I install XP on one of them.
Bottom line --- I want to get this computer set up to use with XP Pro only. The computer is virtually new with less that 25 hrs run time on it.

I would really appreciate knowing how to accomplish this while avoiding as ... Read more

a friend of mine just bought a new hp comp. He/we play online tiger woods golf. His new system uses vista while I still use win xp. Problem is that we dl custom made courses to play at tiger woods site. In order to dl the courses he needs winrar installed to unzip course files. Well, he went and downloaded the free 40 day trial of winrar, but when he tries to run or install it, it doesn't work right. He gets a desktop icon of three books with a strap around them. Every time he double-clicks them , It tries to install winrar again and he cant figure out what to do. I have no experience with vista and cant understand his problem without actually seeing his pc in person. Is this a vista-winrar conflict or can I tell him how to fix problem?
all answers greatly appreciated.

Verify that your friend is using WinRAR v3.71.

If problems persist, tell him to view the error events in the Event Viewer.

That is what I do beforehand, then save them on a stick so you can easily access them later after the initial OS installation.

After doing the initial OS installation, install the OEM drivers and then just watch closely during Windows updates so you can decide then about whether or not to accept driver updates. For the most part, however, driver updates from Microsoft have seldom been a problem for me.

Intel has a driver-check utility at its site where you can check your system after the OS installation...but Intel typically says its drivers are generic in nature and that you should likely use the OEM drivers provided my your MoBo manufacturer.

First off, I am new here, so please be gentle.

I recently purchased a Micro Advantage DVD +/- RW Drive (Model 16DDVDRW-A13). I am trying to install on a box with XP SP 2. The box has 2 existing drives - A DVD reader and a CD burner. I want to remove the CD burner and replace with the DVD burner.

So, I set the DVD burner as a slave and installed the IDE and power cable. When I booted up, my CPU recognized the previously installed DVD reader and DVD burner (drives D & E, respectively). Windows shows drive E as "DVD RW Drive".

My problem is, when I try to burn a DVD, my software does not think I have a DVD burner. I tried using EZ CD Creator 5 by Roxio. No dice - it gave me an error message stating I don't have a DVD burner. Then I tried the software that came with my DVD burner - Nero 6. Same thing - no DVD burner. What have I missed? I thought maybe it was a driver problem, but I don't think that is the case. Any help would be appreciated - sorry for the long post.

A:DVD Burner Install Help Needed

Welcome to Techspot !
You are going to have to back up .
Re install your Dvd burner as the master on that IDE channel and the Dvd player as the slave. Be sure you have the jumpers on the back of the drives set appropriately.
Once your Bios and Windows recognizes the drives correctly then you can move on to the configuration/settings for the software.
Next go to the Web site for yor burner and make sure you have the latest 'Firmware ' for your drive.
I believe you may have some issues there but We can address those after you solve step above.

After an entire day of trying to fix my laptop and get it to Reset to Factory Image I have found that the Setup.exe file to install Win7 is on my hard drive (X:Boot). Only problem is I get this error when I try to install it.

A required CD/DVD drive device driver is missing. If you have a ddriver floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Does anyone know what drivers I need to install the OS? I have seen threads about changing the AHCI or something. I am new at this stuff and the only options in my BIOS regarding the AHCI is to change my SATA controller from AHCI to Compatibility. Both options do not solve my problem. I am booting from the DVD drive which has a Windows 7 32-bit Recovery Disc in it. Any help? Thanks

Hi all, This may seem like a lamo question to some of you folk, but it's the first time I need to do this...
With Win95 we had a dos disk, with Win 98 we had a startup disk, even with Win2000 we have 4 start-up disks... what do we have for XP? When I bought my computer it came with XP pre:installed. Now I want to format my HDD and re:load XP on a clean format of NTFS. Someone at work said if I go into my CMOS setup, I can change my computers boot-up sequence to start with the cd-rom drive, than the hard drive, and or what-ever. Thus with WinXP in the drive, reboot, and XP should begin to install right away... well???

Is this possible? and how do i go about making an ISO image file as i cant find any options in my email apart from to order a new cd at an extra charge. I already have my product key but am i looking in the wrong place for the ISO image of windows 8 pro ?

Many thanks

A:Clean Install (Help needed)

Hello Sam, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Toward the top right of your email from Microsoft, you should have a link like below to click on to download the Windows8-Setup.exe file that will let you download another ISO again.
Afterwards, the tutorial below can help show you how to create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive with the ISO.
Create Bootable USB or DVD with Windows 8 ISO
You can then use the bootable DVD/USB to do a clean install with your upgrade copy of Windows 8. You would enter your same product key number.

Hope this helps,

Recently had a corrupt file force me to re-install the Windows ME operating system on my computer. It appears that everything went okay, however I had added a second hard drive to my computer a couple of years ago, so all the applications on that drive are still on the computer. My question, or maybe my feat is, that I should have taken that hard drive out before re-installing the operating system...since it restored the computer's C drive to what it was when I first bought the computer.
None of the applications in the D drive (or second hard drive) show up in the programs and I have to go to the D drive and click on the applications EXE file to start the application. I did that to one of the applications and when I exited the program, a windows error message appeared and froze the computer.
I didn't get very good assistance from the Compaq/HP Tech support people and wanted to check with you to see if you have any suggestions.
My computer is somewhat outdated now, but still good. Pentium 3 (800 mgz) with 512 megs of ram. My video card, which I also upgraded a couple of years ago, is the Nvidia FX 5200 and has worked great for me. I installed the drivers for that after the re-install and haven't had problems with the video, at least at this point.
Any suggestions on the second hard drive would be appreciated, or any advice on this would be welcomed.

A:Help needed with re-install question

Thanks for the info...My only question now would be if I need to un-install the applications on the D drive and then do a re-install of those same applications? I don't have anything that is a must to save in progress in those applications, so a fresh re-install would be best I presume. I also presume that means I need to do an un-install first?

Hi There

When I bought my PC (about 3 years ago) Windows XP was pre-installed. There's a Windows XP licence number on a sticker attached to the case and I have a Windows XP 'recovery cd' that came with the PC.

My system is really slowing down and I'd like to perform a clean install i.e. format hard drive and install everything from scratch, but I don't think I can do this without a Windows XP cd. Is that correct? I've tried the recovery cd but it doesn't give me any re-installation options.

If I do need a windows xp cd do I just need the media or would I also need a licence?

Thanks, MM

Hi there,

It all started more than a week ago when I picked up a virus worm on my system from an e-mail.

I have been getting awsome help & assistance from one of the TSF support team members over the last 6 days, but on his advice, I now need help from a Windows XP Pro expert in doing a Repair Installation on my machine.

I have the Setup CD, as well as copies of all the system drivers on CD.

I have limited computer skills and knowledge, but will attempt to attach the previous thread.

A:WIN XP INSTALL DISK,after installation,Is it Needed?

If you ever need a file or to reinstall you will need the CD. You are allowed to make a backup copy or at least you use to be able to. Just don't use EZCD to do it. If you're trying to pirate the XP HOME/PRO don't bother - it can only be installed on one machine at a time.
