Disappearing branch indicators in Favorites Menu

Q: Disappearing branch indicators in Favorites Menu

Hi All

Using Windows XP Home and having installed SP2 a few weeks ago, this problem has appeared during the last few days : the branch indicators on the Favorites menu in IE disappear.

MS Help and Support suggests this may happen when using a colour scheme that uses extra large fonts. But I don't -- I use the Windows Classic Scehme with normal fonts. Have also tried it out with the Windows Standard Scheme without any luck.

The branch indicators just appear and disappear.

Any help appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I went to customize the start menu and checked the "Show as a menu" option under Computer. So now when I go to start menu> Computer, a menu pops up showing my drives, etc. My question is how can I make it branch out all of my folders and not only My Computer? Thank you

Got a new MaxForce dual boot PC w/ Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and Windows XP 32 bit installed. I prefer Firefox, but my wife likes Internet Explorer, so we've got both browsers installed on both sides of the PC. The problem I'm having w/ Windows 7 is that the favorites keep disappearing on Internet Explorer. Doesn't seem to be a problem w/ Firefox. I was using Explorer 9 Beta (which I don't like anyway), so I thought since it's still in beta, maybe that's the problem. Uninstalled Explorer 9, now using Explorer 8, but the disappearing Favorites is still w/ me.

At random times, when I click on the "Favorites" tab, there will be nothing there. Looking in the user files, the Favorites folder and the HTML file is still there w/ all the links intact. Try to import to Internet Explorer from the HTML file, but Explorer won't allow. If I do enough clicking around, etc., in different files and then go back to Internet Explorer, the Favorites are back. Anyone have any idea what's going ?.

Well, my main man, Max Feinstein at MaxForce PC came up with the solution. A Microsoft "Fix It", http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549. This fix looks like it will solve a myriad of problems. My wife told me to contact Max in the first place. Memo to self: always listen to your wife.

Using XP SP2 totally up to date, including change to IE7. Recent recurring problem. Will mark a web site as a favorite. Use the shortcut several times and then try it again only to receive a message that the shortcut is not valid. If I reset the favorite, it will again work only to later fail. This has happened with different favorite shortcuts.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Klink.
In IE, right click the problem shortcuts (make sure they are not currently working) and select properties.
On the "Web Document" tab, see if the web address in the url box for the shortcut is correct. If it is, click the "Change Icon" button. The Windows\system32\url.dll should be listed in the "look for icons in this file".
If it points to a different location, let me know. Cancel your way out. There is still a registry bug in IE7 thats been there since the Betas.

This afternoon our users started reporting that they were losing their favorites in IE and in Firefox. I am one of the victims myself. They are missing from the Favorites folder also, so can't be restored. We have not been able to find a cause, or a fix, for this and it's a HUGE problem. Does anyone know of a possible cause, perhaps a new virus or a system blip? Any help would be much appreciated.

When you click on the favorites link to open up your favorites menu, a "favorites bar" is listed. This "favorites bar" link is useless and I have repeatedly right clicked on it to delete it from the menu. However, it returns on its own every so often.

There is also a link called "software updates" that I deleted and it has not repopulated itself.

Is there any way to delete the "favorites bar" link inside favorites so that it does not return?

Just a little anoyance I would like to win.

I think the only thing that will work here is a registry hack.

By default if you set the start menu properties to display "favorites" it does so by a menu. It does not give you a choice to display this as a link or a menu like it does for other folders.

Is there a way to fix this?

A:Display Favorites as a link not a menu in Start Menu

Drag it on to the start menu ( left hand pane) and pin it and it will open up in a new window when clicked.

I have been using Vista for some time now. Recently we got new computers. A laptop and a desk model. On our old machine, when we opened the favorites by clicking the gold star in the upper left of Explorer, we could choose our favorites either by recognizing the icon (after once having gone to the site), or reading the text.

With both new machines the same is true for a time, but for some reason the icons from the sites have started disappearing and leaving only the Explorer icon.

I think some cookies are also disappearing, as several times I have been returned to the first level of some online games. Most annoying!

Can anyone out there help me on this problem?

I know everybody is switching to Edge, I'm not real crazy about it. My problem is with IE 11. When I add a link in "add to favorites" I can see it. Once I close my desktop PC down for the night, the next time I open it those links are gone. I have checked the favorites folder in C:/users/username/favorites, all or at least most of them are gone. The folders I created are empty???? One or 2 might still be there, usually not. Any fix for this??? No point in saving a link if it's not going to be accessible the next time I need it.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 with XP. It periodically drops several of my favorites folders at the left margin for no apparent reason. It also randomly relocates files into unexpected folders requiring me to search everywhere to find them. I've made a list of them on paper, so I can always get them, but what's wrong here? I don't want to just do nothing if something is going bad. I have 84% hard drive space, I've done disc cleanup and defragment, but it persists. And sometimes long lost favorites folders randomly reappear out of the blue.

I am using VB6 (SP5)

I have an MDI application that I am developing. One of the functions enables the user to open a browser window as a child of the main window.

I would like to be able to have a menu as part of the main MDI window that corresponds to the favorites folder on the system, in much the same way as an MS favorites menu.

I have attempted to build this menu using API commands but the only thing I have been able to do is to create some wonderful system crashes! At one point I did get the menu items to show up, but they were not in any sensible order and I could not determine which one had been clicked on.

I must also be able to have an "Add" and "Organize" item in the menu as well, in the same way as IE does. I have written code that will perform the functions for this, but I am still unable to create and interact with a favorites menu.

Any help would be very greatly appreciated!

I hate for my first post to be a cry for help, but I've not been able to find help for my specific problem. As the title suggests, my start menu has vanished. I'm running XP with Service Pack 2.

When I initially turned my computer on, none of the text was in the default font. It was instead in one of the symbol fonts. This has been fixed by going into display properties -> appearance -> advanced and altering the font for each appropriate item. The computer was booting up extremely slowly, but this seems to have been fixed with altering the display fonts.

Back to the start menu. As opposed to the normal start menu, I have a thin grey bar - not unlike what appears when the start menu is set to auto-hide. When I hover over the bar, the mouse icon changes to the up/down arrow. However, when I left-click (and hold down the button) and drag, nothing happens. When I right-click, the normal popup menu appears, sans the 'Cascade Windows', 'Tile Windows Horizontally', 'Tile Windows Vertically' and 'Lock the Taskbar' options. I can still access the properties menu to change the auto-hide and locking options, but changing them does nothing. Changing between 'Start menu' and 'Classic Start menu' via the 'Start Menu' tab also does nothing. Minimized windows appear above the grey bar.

I thought that doing a system restore might help. Since I can't access system restore via the start menu itself, I did it by: My Com... Read more

I'm using XPsp2, and recently I've been experiencing a problem with my start menu.

Whenever I click on the Start menu button, the menu displays as normal, but is I hold the mouse still for a second, the menu will disappear as if cancelled.

If, however, I move the mouse over or select a menu item, it seems to stay for a little while longer. Thus if I need to look over the list of applications for something specific, I have to keep the cursor moving to keep the menu displayed. Basically, this renders the Start Menu almost unusable.

I've been playing with the start menu options, and it seems that this only affects me in the XP-style menu. The Classic menu is unaffected, but I'd prefer not to have to go that way (I like the idea of having stuff that I use regularly pinned to the menu).

I've actually got a couple of things to try; Google suggests that running the desktop as a separate process or using TweakUI to adjust the menu speed could fix the problem.

I'm going off to try those now, but any other ideas would be appreciated.

Hello (again!)

re the "User links" folder (aka Favourites), I'm trying to make it more ... usable.
Currently, every time I want to add a favourite, I have to right-click on the favourites folder - not as easy as it sounds when explorer auto-navigates to where you are (functionality I'm not willing to sacrifice)

I wanted to either

- add / access a commandstore entry [explorer menubar], or

- create a new context-menu entry (ideally on a folder's background), ie right-clicking whitespace,

as oppose to

. focusing the nav-pane {mouseover / shift+tab},
.. scrolling the nav-pane to the top {mouse scrollup / 'home'},
... right-clicking favorites to 'add current location to favourites'

Q: How does the OS perform the 'create link' operation? Is it a function in a DLL? Can it be 'referenced'?

Hi all,
When wishing to save a file into a different format using WORD or IRFANVIEW or WAVELAB or all other programs the save-as option list appears fleetingly then disappears. You can rarely fluke it and sometimes after multiple clicks it works normally but mostly the drop down menu just disappears.
This only happened after using CC cleaner and malwarebytes to remove a bad virus infection.
Also if I happen to double-click while attempting to choose a format (as the menu disappears) the computer goes into a strange feedback loop and becomes unusable till eventually it stops by itself.
