Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga fingerprint sensor crashes

Q: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga fingerprint sensor crashes

I've been having trouble with the fingerprint sensor on my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga laptop (type 20FR) for the last week. It is now completely unresponsive after working just fine for months. In device manager it says "This device cannot start (Code 10)." I've tried disabling/enabling the device form device manager, uninstalling/re-installing the drivers, and wiping stored fingerprints from the BIOS settings. After wiping the fingerprints from BIOS settings and re-programming the fingerprint sensor from the Windows Hello settings menu, it worked for a day, but then the issue with the finger print sensor crashing returned. What do I do?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Something is weird with the fingerprint sensor. When it works, it works instantly and recognizes my fingerprint right away, no matter which part of the finger I use. The problem is that it's *constantly* forgetting my finger. It'll work fine, then I'll close my laptop and come back in a little bit and it doesn't work at all...fails three times and have to use my PIN. Once that happens it doesn't work again, at all, until I re-enroll my fingerprint at which time it works perfectly again for some time. I end up having to re-enroll once or twice a day. Lenovo Vantage pulled in a new version of the driver package today but it didn't help...the issue just happened again. Anyone know what the cause might be?

The fingerprint scan function stopped working yesterday for my computer. I googled for a solution and I found one I tried to follow it. One of the steps was to update the bios and I did and it worked for one hour or so and then stopped working again. I couldn't do the other steps at all since I don't have anything software called Lenovo fingerprint manager pro on my computer and I can't find it anywhere online for Windows 10 either. Does anyone else has the same problem as me?

Hello all, I hope you are doing well I purchased my T460P slightly over a year ago. When it arrived, the fingerprint sensor worked perfectly fine. Then I did a reset of Windows 10 and found that the sensor would not work. I got a error Code 10 in device manager. Some research unearthed the fact that this was a known issue when resetting Windows 10 and the only solution was a clean install. Today, after finding the time to backup all my files, I finally did do my clean install of Windows 10. However, I run into the same issue. After installing all drivers and getting everything to work fine, the fingerprint sensor still shows a yellow exclamation mark in device manager and the error: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" I made sure to format my hard drive when installing and did a complete clean install with no leftover data from my previous install. I downloaded the latest driver from the support page and have also updated BIOS to the latest version (as of November 1 2017). I'm not quite sure what to do next. I know there is no hardware issue as the sensor was working fine and it was the initial reset that caused it to stop working. The laptop has been taken care of well and has had no falls or knocks. I would appreciate any input and thank you for your time in advance

When I run my finger across the fingerprint sensor, the light is disabled as my finger gets close to the sensor.  Its almost as though it is detecting the change in the light.  I don't know if this is normal, but the end result is that upon swiping a finger, it does not read it and thus cannot be used.  Periodically, the light will stay on and Windows Hello will have no reaction.  Other times, ocassionally, when the finger is rolled to one side, then it flash orange and say it cannot read it. I get the impression that a USB reset is occuring.  Is there any tool to check the fingerprint sensor?  Or does anyone have any ideas?

The fingerprint sensor seems to have disappeared off my Thinkpad P51. I've tried to update drivers but when going into the device manager, there is not even a section for biometric devices where the fingerprint sensor would normally be. I checked under all other subcategories and none had anything that looked like a fingerprint sensor. Going into windows settings, under fingerprint sensor the message "We couldn't find a fingerprint scanner compatible with windows hello fingerprint" appears. I then checked BIOS and under fingerprint security settings, BIOS also does not see any fingerprint hardware installed on the device. Any suggestions? There has been no physical damage to the computer and no other indication as to why the hardware would stop working. Since it last worked, the light above the fingerprint scanner has not come on once either.

Randomly the sensor just stopped working and in the sign-in options, fingerprint isn't even an option. Windows hello says it is not available on this device. The biometrics was hidden in device manager and I uninstalled it. Downloaded the drivers from the lenovo support site and restarted, which did not work. Now the biometrics isn't even showing in the device manager. Any suggestions? My experience with Lenovo has been a mixed-bag...by far the best thinkpad I've owned and it was working great until it randomly starts dropping wifi connections and now the fingerprint reader. I don't understand how things just stop working all of a sudden. I make sure to keep the system updated - are there bad updates out there?

I have two week old X1 Yoga (20FQ) and the fingerprint sensor seems to work very unstable. It worked fine for a while and and suddenly in Windows 10 login it didn't work at all. It seems to read multiple times as when I put my finger close to sensor it immediately gives "Too many failed attempts" message and asks to login with PIN-code. I removed the device and re-installed the latest drivers from Lenovo support page and it worked again for two days. And now again I cannot login using fingerprint sensor. As the issue was resolved for couple of days with reinstalling the device, it might not be a HW-issue. Is there any good diagnostic tools available or is there a place to change the sensitivity of the sensor? Many thanks in advance for all the help!

I tried to update fingerprint driver, but no use Has anyone faced the same problem?

Hello dear community! The fingerprint reader of my Yoga 460 is not working properly. When I try to set up my fingerprint in Windows Hello it wants me to swipe my finger at least 20 times while the reader is flashing green and orange in irregular intervals. It looks like when a fingerprint is not identified as correct.I already tried different fingers and cleaned the device. I also tried to install the driver provided on the support page but I think Windows always installs the driver from Windows update as it is considered the latest driver.I am using the latest version of Windows 10 and the name of the device in the device manager is "Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=0017)". Thanks for your help! Michael

My Lenovo Yoga 730-13IWL , a few days  after updating to Windows 10 Pro Build 1903 my laptop suddenly won't recognize my fingerprint. But when I want to Set Up new Fingerprint after removing my existing fingerprint on SIGN-IN Option in Windows Settings, after inputing PIN for credential prompt, the windows just asking me to place my finger on the scanner but nothing happen. The driver/hardware seems working but it failed to recognize when my finger are placed on it. Please help to resolve my Problem. Sincerely,Tio

Hi, Let me first explain what has been the path with my S1 for you to better understand the issue. At first i had ghosting problem and i decided to replace the screen, at the same time the notebook began to show some more problems, it would not boot at all some times until it went dead. At that point i decided to change the motherboard also. My model originally came with i7-4500, but i decided to get a motherboard with i5-4200.So now i have both changed the screen and the motherboard. Luckily the notebook is working now and seems all fine except the autorotation. I have done some reading and i know that it might be some issue with windows 10, but my concern is that it might be a hardware problem also related to the motherboard and lcd change. In Device manager i see the HID sensor collection v2 installed correctly but its not working. Also i noticed that when i change to tablet mode the touchpad does not disable, and i wonder if that might be a sensor issue too.So my main question is where is the sensor responsible for the autorotaion located?? i have a doubt if it is the p-sensor located under the battery but im not sure. What do tou guys think, should i investigate further in the software side or it might be hardware problem?? Thanks.

So I don't use my thinkpad usualy in tablet mode, but today i did and when I tried to turn the laptop the screen of course remained still, so I started digging. There are a lot of solutions on the web for this, but none helped me so far, the interesting thing is that there is no option to enable or disable the auto-rotation in the settings or the action center. Updated all the drivers, also the hardware seems to work properly. I hope somebody encountered and solved this issue and can help me as well.Cheers, Dan.??

Hi, first off, please note that I like to have USB 3.0 set to "Enabled" (instead of "Auto") in the BIOS settings of my ThinkPad Yoga 12 (5th Gen i7) since this setting seems to be working better for me when switching between Windows 7 and Linux. However, I noticed a glitch with this setting. The "Sensor Hub" device (in particular the orientation sensor) does not show up when setting USB 3.0 to "Enabled". When setting USB 3.0 to "Disabled" (i.e. using USB to 2.0 mode), the sensor works nicely. I'm also pretty sure that this is not merely a Windows driver problem since the whole STMicroelectronics device also only shows up in Linux (lsusb) when in USB 2.0 mode. Note that all other devices (e.g. input devices, camera, bluetooth) show up in either USB 2.0 or 3.0 mode, under Windows and Linux. Thus I wonder if this needs to be fixed low-level (e.g. BIOS update)?

A:ThinkPad Yoga 12 Sensor Hub not showing when USB 3.0 is set to "Enabled" in BIOS

Hi Ochi,       Just wanted to let you know I have experienced the same issue, and yes, setting the USB 3.0 mode to "Auto" works.  When it is set to "Enabled", the sensor does not get detected.  I suspect the fix for this will be as you mentioned, another BIOS Update.

Hi, I'm a happy owner of a Dell E5270 and on The base plate there's a fingerprint sensor. However, when I install the recommended drivers there are no biometric devices. What is visible (in device manager) is Dell Control Vault w/o fingerprint sensor. Is it possible that there is a sensor but that The system lacks the optional fingerprint unit inside the laptop housing? There are no exclamation Marks in the device manager.
Secondly I've found the Dell DW5811E 3P10Y wwan card for the dell e5270 at a bargain price but i would like to know where to finf the cables in the housing? .

Hi folks, I have a ThinkPad S3 Yoga 14 20DM003RGE and I suspect that a switch or sensor is defective. In the BIOS the keyboard works without problems and when installing Windows the touchpad also works. After installing Windows 10, neither the keyboard nor the touchpad works in Windows itself. The switch or sensor that deactivates the keyboard in tablet mode is obviously defective. Now I'd like to know how to disable this switch in Windows so that the keyboard and touchpad work again. In other words, the keyboard should be enabled in notebook mode and in tablet mode. Does anyone know which registry entry disables the keyboard and touchpad in tablet mode? Or how can I reactivate these components?I'd also like to know exactly where this switch is so I can replace it later. Best regards

I'd like to report a bug with the Rotation Sensor, which I believe is handled by HID Sensor Collection V2 The rotation sensor will not detect auto-rotation after a total shutdown. The only way to get it to work again is for the laptop to enter Sleep Mode, then upon waking up the laptop, it will re-enable the rotation detection. I believe this is some kind of bug with the ACPI system regarding the sensor. System Specifications:Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga 13 20175OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit version 1709, Build 16299.371 (Fresh Install) HID Sensors Collection V2 Hardware ID's:HID\VID_2047&PID_0855&REV_1141HID\VID_2047&PID_0855HID\VID_2047&UP:0020_U:0001HID_DEVICE_UP:0020_U:0001HID_DEVICE Driver Provider: Microsoft .inf name: SensorsHidClassDriver.inf

I have a Thinkpad X1 Yoga (3rd Gen). Is this something I can fix through software or would I have to send it in for servicing? Thank!

You're not alone, and unfortunately it's been identified as a hardware issue. The BIOS message that you got is actually being used as a confirmation that the problem is hardware, not software. See this thread.

I have purchased Thinkpad X1 Yoga 3rd generation and have constantly had Fingerprint device problems. The system often did not recognize the device and eventually the device just diappeared in the system.Driver updates and BIOS setting tricks did not work and I could not even see the device in the device manager. So, I searched it on the Lenovo forum and there were several similar cases and apparently simply replacing the Fingerprint device does not always solve the problem. I wrote the problems down when I requested the technical service, and the technician just came with a Fingerprint device. He replaced it but it did not work. And I had to arrange another visit and this time the technician replaced the main board and it fortunately worked, although I had to reinstall all drivers and so on again. I was happy for a while, but the Fingerprinter disappeared again soon.So I requested again the technical service and the technician came and opened up my laptop to replace it. And he realized that he has a wrong Fingerprint device. He just closed the laptop and left. I thought myself okay this could happen.. and stayed for a while without thinking about the Fingerprint device. Later, I requested the replacement again and they answered they cannot replace it and I have to send it in to them which I cannot do soon. And the reason was that they do not replace a part twice - which is contradictory to the last visit of the technician for a second replacement although ... Read more

Hi there, I recently got myself a ThinkPag X1 Yoga as a work laptop after previously owning several other ThinkPads. I had the laptop set up by an IT colleague who installed the latest version Windows 10 Enterprise on it. I am having some troubles getting my fingerprint set up now though. Whenever I go the the setup and Windows prompts me to place my finger on the reader, the system crashes with the following messages as soon as I place my finger on the reader:  The system clearly recognizes the fingerprint reader as I get to that stage, and also because the error message only appears as soon as I place my finger on the fingerprint reader. I checked the driver and it's the latest one (6.0.19.1105). I also re-installed the driver but this didn't solve anything either. Could anyone help me with this issue?

Hey guys and gals, The sensor had been hit or miss from day one, when it worked it would sometimes take 3 presses before registering correctly. I've been using these kinds of sensors for years on my phones so I was suprised at how much effort it took to get it to work. It often wasn't avaliable to me when the laptop came out of sleep mode, or if the screen had been locked.  One day last month it stopped working completely. It isn't being detected at all in the device manager, unless it's under a differnt name now. I tried restoring from factory and seeing if I could get it back. After running all the Windows, driver, and firmware updates, it's still not present in the device manager. I went in the BIOS and checked to see that the fingerprint sensor was enabled. It was, and then I tried to delete any fingerprint data, but there wasn't any. So I'm wondering, has anyone else has had a similar issue and if there's a way I can fix this without having to RMA my otherwise kickass laptop?  Maybe the senseor is loose? Should I open her up and make sure everything's tight? I haven't unbuckled any of her fasteners yet, but if it could save me a month of being computerless while she's in the shop, I'll gladly try it.   Cheers
