Slow internet, slow to open programs, needing help please.

Q: Slow internet, slow to open programs, needing help please.

First time poster, long time lurker.  Just made an account because I finally want to get my computer running decently.

Here is my issue, I use the internet all the time.  I use sites like wunderground, flightradar and other live updating websites.
I have a toshiba satellite that is probably 4 years old or so.  It has been fine for me and I enjoy using it.  Over the last year or so it has become slower when opening programs like google earth, thunderbird, gopro studio and itunes.
I'm not sure how to describe the slowness of it.  For example, using flightradar, while showing live radar for the area, it freezes, I have to hit the reload button on google chrome a few times before it refreshes the page.  Google earth takes about 15 seconds to load, when I first downloaded it a few years ago it opened almost immediately.
I am not computer braindead but I am not computer savy as well.
Any help would be great.

Edit: another thing with the slowness of the computer, it takes quite a while to open up my pictures folders

Preferred Solution: Slow internet, slow to open programs, needing help please.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, i've recently been experiencing some issues with internet connectivity and a few other random problems that have been occurring with my computer that i believe are being caused by spyware or some sort of virus.
My system specs are - i am running windows XP professional, Service pack 3,
2.4 ghz quadcore pentium processor with 2 gigs of ram. I am on a wireless internet connection provided by comcast. Both the other computers (a powerbook and a desktop running on vista) don't have any problems. However my internet connection, although connected, is really really slow. takes about 5 minutes for any site to load up.

In addition to that, i couldnt get malwarebytes anti malware to start up. so i deleted it and tried to reinstall, but i cant even run the install file. Spybot S&D wont start either. I can access everything but the actual main window. I uninstalled and reinstalled this successfully but there were no changes.

Also, every time i start up my computer, i get a registry change message from spybot saying there is an added value to a macromedia folder in my local settings folder. i've been denying this change every time

Alright. so i wrote a fricking novel, but hopefully someone can provide me some answers. It would be MUCH appreciated. I have a few projects on hold at the moment that need to be finished by the end of the week

Hi, I have resurrected an old HP laptop I used years ago. The OS is XP version 2002 SP3.
My Sony Vaio has been diagnosed as too expensive to warrant repair
This laptop is very slow to load Windows and programs are very slow to open
Firewall is Avira. Malwarebytes and Spybot search and destroy are both loaded as is HJT
I have culled any programs that I do not expect to use in the near future
This seems to have helped and the computer is useable - but not much fun !!
I was expecting to post a HJT log but noted in the tutorials this program is not regarded too highly anymore
This is my first post and appreciate any assistance
I am currently in the Asia Pacific region so my normal Tech Shop assistance is not an option

I'm not sure if this should go in the Antivirus Program as it seems that my problems occured after installing Kaspersky Anti-virus 7.0.

My Zonealarm Security Suite subscription was ending. I decided to completely uninstall this and go with separate Anti-virus & firewall.

I installed the trial version of Kaspersky AV 7, rebooted and configured. Then, I went with Zonealarm Pro. I installed and rebooted.

1st thing - on reboot it took almost 15 minutes for my desktop and all icons to completely load. This only occured one time, so I suspect Kaspersky was doing some scanning or caching something.

Since then, bootup has been normal....about 30 - 45 seconds from logon for all processes and services to load.

However, I've noticed 2 things in particular:

1) When I open up certain applications, they don't open right away. It sometimes takes 2 or more minutes to open up. During this delay the hour glass shows, then stops. Hard drive goes quiet. Then, the program finally opens up.
Not all applications do this, and it's not always the same ones after each boot. Sometimes all of them open right away, sometimes none.

2) When trying to shutdown the computer, there is also a significant delay. After 2 or 3 minutes, the shutdown procedure begins, the desktop fades and says: "Logging off". It stays here for a while (anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes, or longer). Again, the hard drive is quiet. Then the hard drive churns and it goes to saying: "Shutting down&q... Read more

Just wondering. When the programs are hanging when you are trying to open them is there anything in task manager that shows what is eating your cpu. You can organize the CPU column in task manager to show the highest utilization on your PC.

My laptop has slowed considerably in recent weeks. All programs are very slow to open and changing from one window to another takes ages. Booting up can take 15 minutes before the computer is ready to open a program. The AVG program used to take 30 to 40 minutes to scan about 60,000 objects, now it takes 80 minutes to scan 90,000 objects. Spybot used to do a complete check in about 20 minutes and it now takes several hours. I have tried the following: ? Empty recycle bin.? Delete temporary internet files.? Checked my Zone Alarm fire wall for updates and operation. Checked that Windows Firewall is turned off.? Update and run AVG, Ad-aware and Spybot. Ad-aware seems to work ok and always identifies objects for deletion. AVG rarely finds a problem and is really slow now. Also, when updating, it asks for a reboot whereas before a popup screen would appear showing the update progress and the popup screen would close down automatically 30 seconds after it finished updating.? Uninstalled and re-installed Spybot because Spybot takes several hours to scan now, whereas it used to take 20 or 30 minutes. The re-install made no difference!? Installed and run Eusing registry cleaner and CleanUp! several times.? Run Windows update.? Defragmented the hard disk.? Used the Error-checking tool to check for file system errors and bad sectors on the hard disk.? Increased the size of the Virtual Memory because I was getting error message to say Virtual Memory too low.? Installed Housecall... Read more

Hello,

I am new to these forums and have updated to Windows 10 just a little over a month ago. When I upgraded I had to buy a new usb wifi adapter for my computer as my old one would no longer work on Windows 10. I threw away the box on my new adapter but I think it is a AC600. At first my internet speeds were decent, and then they got even better with me often having download speeds on Steam over 1 MB/s. However, over the last few days my internet has not connected and today I managed to get it connected but now everything is so slow I cannot get webpages to load (was going to look for new drivers) or download any game updates. I did manage to get lucky and have Steam work a bit but I am working with a speed of 20 KB/s right now.

I use Comcast Xfinity, but I don't think that is the problem. My iPad, iPhone, and the Mac laptop I am writing this on all work just fine. It is definitely my Windows 10 box. It is past the 1-month I had to roll back to Windows 7 so I need to figure out a good way to deal with this. Do I need a better wifi adapter? Do I need to change settings somewhere? I am up for giving anything a shot.

Any help would be appreciated. I will go ahead an apologize if this exact question has been asked and answered before, I would hate for my first post on a new forum to be an easily found answer. However, I have not found anything that has worked with my problem yet, though my frustration may be playing into giving up early as well. I am somewhat d... Read more

Hi

I have two programs (Drive Image and Zuma) that are very slow to open (about 20 seconds). Once they did open quickly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled them but still the same. I am running XPPRO. Any idea of what has caused this?

Thanks!!

Vivienne

A:Two Programs *very* slow to open

Many plug-ins.
Try to disactivate "Load plug ins when program opens" or something of that effect, in the "preference" or "option" if they have it.

But the best way is to write to them. Usualy softwares are slow because they are poorly written and too big.

I run XP even though my profile says 98.

I'm having some problems with my computer. Programs take about 90 seconds to load. For example if I click on MS Word, or notepad or any program, nothing happens for 90 seconds. The hard drive doesn't spin, the CPU meter in Task Manager doesn't show an increase in CPU%. It's as if I never clicked the program. Then 90 seconds later, the program opens and runs just fine. This happens with all programs, even gmer.exe. It's been doing this for about a month. While I'm waiting for the program to load, any program already open works just fine. There's no hourglass or anything.

Also, when I right-click on a file, I don't get the pop-up menu until 90 seconds later. I get the hourglass for 90 seconds provided I hold the mouse over the containing folder, and then after 90 seconds the popup menu briefly appears and then disappears, so I can't choose anything.

I've run Avast, and Spybot S&D and let them fix all the problems they found. So I'm not sure that my problem is a virus or malware.

dds doesn't work for me. It says it takes less than 3 minutes, but a half hour later it still hasn't given me popups with logs. So I closed it.

I use Avast. I'd like to delete Norton, but I can't because the "Add / Remove Programs" simply tells me to wait a moment while it populates the list, and then it never populates the list.

I can't zip my file since the right-click no longer works. But since dds doesn't work ei... Read more

Hi I am testdriving a new Win7 X64 installalling and testing software I discovered that some software is suddenly very slow at startup.

I am used to a 32 bit text editor ( text pad) that normally opens fast but now I can count about 10-15 seconds everytime I try to start the program.
Also when I try to close the program it takes similar time and I see a not responding message in the program name bar. Even if I just opened the program and close it
The program appears in a snap in the task manager.
Also Mediaplayer Classic (MPC) 32 bit takes over 15 seconds to start althoug it apears in the taskamager right after I doubleclick the icon. Closing MPC removes it right the same moment from the screen but it remails in the task manager for some 15 seconds again.
Other programs like: open office, irfanview, Thunderbird and Windows mediaplayer, notepad start normally.

I tried disabling kasperski IS2010 but that did not change anything.
I looked in the system logs but see no entries in the system logs appearing if I start or close these programs.

I already found a fast opening replacement for textpad in Notepad++, but still I want to have all pgms opening normally.
I do not like windows media player and always used MPC.

Any one got a clue?

I've got three programs that are much slower to open on first start in a session than they should be and than others experience, and this continued or even started after a December Win 8.1 Pro x64 reinstall on a fast SSD that has TRIM (O&O Defrag). They are as follows:

- Vuze opened directly, but not via another means, such as a torrent link (latter loads normally). Gone on for about a year. From watching, loading plugins in the first stage are the hangup. Can take up to 60 secs.
- XYplorer (paid) file manager - starting a few months ago went from a few seconds at most to 13-15 seconds and then to 20-30 seconds to open on first start. Reinstall along the way didn't fix it.
- Todo Home Backup - takes quite awhile

I've raised the issue on Vuze and XYplorer forums, but aside from an occasional user who's had the same problem, no one knows what to make of it. Any ideas? Thanks,

Hello.

Win XP Pro SP3
Pentium D CPU @ 3.00 GHz
1G ram

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

I then manually updated the remaining 9 OS up... Read more

A little background to help others help me I'm on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 environment with no other server connection but one machine, I have 3 shared drives created on the server and am running Shared Point Services 2.0 as well and all my computers on the network have a login script assigned to them when booting onto the network so their drives are automatically mapped. Oh and I have POS old Sony laptop running as a proxy using Winproxy 5.0, but it has about a gig of speed and 512 RAM and the connection goes: in from the outside, to the proxy, line directly to server, server assigns ISP's by DHCP internally.

My computer is a Dell Optiplex 2600
P4 2.0 gig
512 meg PC 2700 333 meg RAM
onboard graphics and soundcard

Here's a question to start from another thread I posted: About two months back or so I noticed if I put cd's into my PC at work I must have downloaded a rootkit or something because now I cannot play some cd's that I can play on my home computer and others in the office. Now in the future is is safer to burn MP3's on an external harddrive and listen that way or avoid Sony cd's?

Now to the problem, I put in a burned cd this morning it starts up WMP 10 fine and I'm listening to Back in Black then all of a sudden my computer freezes. Crashes my financial program which I think nothing of because I am using Master Builder 11.2 by ... Read more

For some reason programs seem to be opening slower than before. I dont think it is firefox because even with my browser closed when I open my computer or control panel it takes longer than usual for them to open. I downloaded a program earlier this week and the crawler toolbar installed and it seems to be slower and balky after that. I removed the crawler toolbar and ran scans with avira, malwarebytes and super antispyware. They all came up clean except for some cookies in superantispyware. running xp with service pack3 and 512mb of ram. I will include a hjt report and if someone could check it over it would be appreciated.

I have been working on a friends dell D800 latitude laptop.
a little background on my problem.

I installed a clean copy of win 7 ultimate and had the laptop running like the proverbial scalded dog.
I was a happy camper when I left it with him.
Now comes the problem,
He let his teen son get hold of it while he slept and the boy docked it to the docking station, attaching every device he could find (external monitor ,mouse, dvd player etc.)and while I see no reason that should cause him problems I still received the call the next week complaining of slow boot(up to 2 hours) and very slow opening of win explorer, programs etc.
yet the device manager shows 99% system idle almost all the time it is running.
it is not stuck in PIO mode .
the Hdd scans clean with chkdsk,I have disassembled the laptop and checked out hardware components a couple of times yet all appears correct and functioning.
I re-installed win xp and got same results.re-installed win 7 again and install took a whopping 7 hours to finally complete.
I'm at my wits end and only my hard-headedness has kept me messing with this thing.
I just don't like a machine beating me.

I have flashed the bios, found the most up to date drivers, ran a stress test on the so-dimm modules(which was so ungodly slow my patience ran out)the only thing I have not done is start replacing hardware which I'm not about to do seeing how he has no money to pay for anything much less my services.
The machine did not lose system time ... Read more

When I first boot up and try to open programs they do not open right away. After 1 to 2 minutes anything I attempted to run opens. Some time I can get the Task Manager to open
right away and I notice that the CPU usage is up around 85 to 100% (I use Process
Manager). Sometime, but not always once they open I no longer have any problem opening programs. Can something be taking up the resources during that time? I also noticed just now that Process Manager says two programs I tried to run are running but they are not visible on the screen until they all of a sudden open. I hope I am making myself clear - this is a fluky problem.

I have also experienced freezes. After doing something like opening System Information in Process Explorer or opening the quick launch menu it freezes. The mouse pointer either shows the hour glass or it remains the pointer but the mouse or keyboard is useless. I have to reset to reboot.

The slow start up of programs has been with me for about a week or so. The freezing problem started today.

Any ideas on what is happening?

Hello,

I've been have some trouble with my comp for a little while now. Sometimes it runs really slow and I've been have trouble opening up some programs and links. At times I double click on Internet Explorer and the screen slightly flashes, but does nothing. This also happens with other programs or links. It also gave me a message about a month ago that my virtual memory was low. I also could have a connection problem. My gut feeling is there's something unwanted running on my computer, but I'm not sure. I don't know really what to do. Please help.

Thanks,

A:comp running slow, can't open some programs

might be spyware. lets take a loot at some things first. Rightclick on the bottom of your screen (taskbar) and open task manager. How many programs do you have running on a fresh restart? 40, 50 , 60, 1000. let me know.

How much RAM does your system have.

And we can proceed from there :)

About two weeks ago my computer started running slower than usual. For instance: when I click to open a browser window (IE) it stalls for a few seconds and then loads. Or, if I click on an application (i.e., Word 2010) again I get a "drag" time before it opens. If I click for InPrivate browsing, again, there is this "drag" time, real slow to open.
I ran MSE, Malwarebytes, Spybot, SuperAntiSpyware and Adwcleaner and removed some infections (not many). I defragged after cleaning temp folders. And still this machine is running slower than usual. I have filters turned off so I don't know exactly what is going on.
Any suggestions? Thanks

A:Solved: Computer slow to open programs

Is Malwarebytes or Spybot, or indeed SAS
providing active protection - by that I mean are they active
Malwarebytes in the current free edition is an opt out of the offer of the 30 day trial of the professional edition that provides real time protection
If you are running that and or Spybot as well as MSE everything will be slow
Additionally you will end up with less protection not more
The same applies to SAS the free edition is scan only on demand the paid for edition is real time protection

I cannot run Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware - I click on them and they never start up. The same with Internet Explorer. Everthing runs very slowly, just trying to click on the My Computer icon takes a minute to load. I am able log into Safe Mode, access the internet, and run Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Neither program shows any infected files.

Hi, it could be something such as malware, but it could also be something as simple as needing a defrag or more RAM. If you'd like to check for malware..Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it.Before saving any of your security programs, rename them first. For example, before you save Malwarebytes', rename it to something like MBblah.exe and then click on Save and save it to your desktop. Same thing after you install it. Before running it, rename the main executable file first

Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run..Another work around is by not using the mouse to install it, Just use the arrow keys, tab, and enter keys. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the... It appears that you have two antivirus programs installed and running, AVG and Norton.

While this may seem like better protection, they can actually conflict with one another and cause system instability or even system hangs.

It may be the cause of your sluggishness.

Please choose one to keep and uninstall the other via Programs and Features in your Control Panel.

Here is what happens, friday night I was using chrome as usual, and i get bored, so I wanted to see Breaking Bad and then I will go to bed, but when I close chrome and tried to open VLC media player, didn't work, gives me this error (sorry if it is in spanish, but i don't know how to traduce that, I'm from Colombia):

"No se pudo iniciar la aplicación; la configuración en paralelo no es correcta. Consulte el registro de eventos de la aplicación o use la herramienta sxstrace.exe de la línea de comandos para obtener más detalles".

So I decide to restart my laptop. When I do that, I realized that it is EXTREMELY SLOW, like it took 20 minutes to reboot properly. And when I tried to open anything, ANYTHING, gives me the same error. I tried to open "sxstrace.exe" in the execute line, but it doesn't work, doesn't even appears in the task manager, even in the secure mode. Also i tried to run sfc /scannow but when it reaches 51% fails. I restore my laptop a month ago, but doesn't happen anything. In safe mode the only thing that works is CCleaner, so I erase the registry values, and clean the cache, and everything you can do in CCleaner, but nothing happens, doesn't work anything. Then I tried to follow the steps in this page: http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/malware-removal-guide Doing this http://www.selectrealsecurity.com/stop-malicious-processes

Ok, so I am habing some problems with a computer of mine at my work. It is a typical workstation, as well as a database center for about 20 mobile Windows GPS handhelds. So it has taken a lot of setup to get this thing up and running.

It has two major problems that I have noticed. And both are quite annoying when using the computer.

The first is, If I open a program, it will start up quickly and load with no problems at all. Won't even skip a beat. But If I open a file that opens up that program, The program and the file take forever to load. It usually takes about 4ish minutes to open a file this way. So Example: I open Microsoft Word. Flash screen appears after about half a second and it loads to a blank page in about 5 seconds altogether. I then tell it to open a document and the documents is loaded in about a half a second. Done. Total time - less than 10 seconds. Now instead of loading the program first and then opening, I just double-click the document I want to load. The window freezes up and becomes "Not Responding", the flash screen shows up after about 30 seconds, and the programs loads with no page opened after about a minutes in a fifteen seconds. After about 2 minutes or more after that, the page finally loads. Also at some point the windows screen that was previously "Not Responding" now works great again.

Now to the second problem. The printer issue. I print and it prints and the print job disappears, but the windo... Read more

Hey guys,

My laptop has been running slow as a heck for the last couple of months. Just all of a sudden every time I close windows and exit programs it takes forever to close and typically a blue screen comes up and dissolves down after the window closes. Hopefully we can figure this out, thank you for your time.

I have access to my OE install disc.

This is something that I've noticed since Windows 8, but Windows Defender make some programs so slow to open. It's pretty noticeable on the programs that it does it on as it takes approx. 20-30 seconds to open them, even from an SSD, and if you look at Resource Monitor listed by CPU usage, you can see it's due to MsMpEng.exe running a scan before the program will open.

It would be understandable if it was doing it the first time the program had ever ran, or if the program wasn't signed, but that's not always the case. Canon DPP for example isn't signed, so presumably that's why Defender keeps scanning that, however here's an example of another program (SyncBackFree) that is signed, but yet Windows Defender still wants to keep scanning it on a daily basis despite nothing changing since previous scans.

Obviously I can add individual programs to the Windows Defender Exclusion list and exclude them from real-time protection, but what it is that Defender doesn't like with certain programs that is feels the need to keep scanning them daily? Is this a Microsoft problem, or is it down to the software not adhering to some sort of best practice policies Microsoft have laid out? There must me something that makes Defender treat it as potentially signed malware?

Hello, I am Hayden. I'm just going to jump right into this. Earlier today when I booted up my computer I got a notification that a Trojan had been removed from my computer and I was totally safe (I have Norton 360 Protection). Now, I assumed thank god, sweetz my computer is safe coolio. But when I tried going on the internet to check my emails, that was not the case. Constantly it was saying my internet had an issue and had to close, so I clicked close then instantly it would recover itself and then report back the same issue. So I ended its process and tried opening other processes to see if it was effecting more than just the internet. I quickly noticed that almost all programs would crash after attempting to launch for only a few seconds. I then tried to open Norton so I could run a scan, same thing it crashed. Finally I decided to try opening my programs while monitoring my task manager's processes and noticed nothing unusual as far as I could tell. Only that everything quickly ended right after starting. To me it's clear I have some virus or Trojan so I reattempted launching the internet and after 6 or 7 tries succeeded. I searched how to fix my problem and found this malware preventing me from opening programs or using system restore..

For the most part it all seemed to apply directly to me so I went ahead and started following the steps, starting with downloading GMER Rootkit Scanner. I just finished the scan and am now ready to report the results, but I realized I ... Read more

A:Computer suddenly slow, many programs no longer will open!

Hello Hayden, welcome to TSF.

Since the issue started only a couple of days ago, I would suggest you try invoking system restore without Windows loaded. You can access System Restore from the Advanced Options menu by pressing F8 during startup, selecting Repair Your Computer from that menu, select the keyboard layout, then choose System Restore from the System Recovery Options screen which appears. Choose a restore point before the issue arose.

Then, follow the steps in our pre-posting topic here, and post the required logs for our review.
