Mobo handles LAN connection very oddly.

Q: Mobo handles LAN connection very oddly.

Well, seeing as how my internet setup is very odd by itself, I'm not expecting to find an answer, but it would be nice.

Anyways, on to my problem.

I have my internet run through a router, and to two computers. It's a LinkSys router, and worked fine with my old PC(some sony piece of junk). Anywho, I've built a new PC with the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe and the net is kinda hard to get working.

My Ip isn't 192.xx.xx.xx or so, it's an actual 24.xx.xx.xx type IP, and sometimes my mobo doesn't recognize it properly. It requires me either disabling/re-enabling the LAN thing in network places until it gets the right IP, or disconnecting/reconnecting the cable until it does. Sometimes works in one try, sometimes in quite a few.

That's where it gets annoying...sometimes it takes FOREVER to get my PC connected to the internet. Also annoying because someone in my family is a real ******* and looooves to disconnect the LAN cable on my side, causing me to do the process over again(usually takes ~1 hour).

If anyone would shed some light on my problem, it would be a great help. Thanks in advance.

Also, if it's notable, I cannot access the router at all from my PC using the browser or any method(to clarify; typing or something in the browser).

Preferred Solution: Mobo handles LAN connection very oddly.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Mobo handles LAN connection very oddly.

First of all your motherboard does not work with IP addresses or network settings. you should be working with the property sheet for the Ethernet card (Which might be built in , but still referred to as such)
Next, Every Lynksis I have seen Uses the access for the Setup pages and you must go there in order to setup properly. If you do not have an owners manual , download one from Lynksis.
I suspect you have automatic settings Checked , but That amongst other settings will not matter until you access the router.

I'm new to the forum but it is excellent so far...
I have a Dell (gulp) P4 1.4 Socket 423 Willamette. The mobo is Dell's and there is a mere single fan header that powers a 92 mm exhaust fan, for the P4, at the rear of the case. I bought a 56 cfm Panaflo fan to replace the temp sensing fan it came with (low flow) but I get a 'no system fan detected' at POST. The Dell forums say that the BIOS has a routine that looks for the fan. I can't use the header because it has a certain shape that won't accept a standard 3-pin molex. Can the BIOS be hacked? I need to cool this system better and any ideas would be appreciated.

A:Thermal sensing mobo connection

You could look in the bios for an option to disable the no fan stop.
Doubt if there is one though.

What about removing the connector from the current fan and soldering it to the new fan. Are they both three wire fans, should work.
Just snip the three wires paying attention to color codes and strip and solder the new fan to the header connector. If it doesn't work you should be able to reverse the process to get the old one back working.

Although if the machine is still in warranty doing this would probably void the warranty

Another option would be to place both fans in the case if room allows and use a four to three wire adapter to plug the fan into one of the space power plugs in the case

I recently built my first computer and I cannot find out where to plugin the firewire port form the front panel to the mobo. There is place where the front USB ports are connected to but no place to plug in the firewire. Is there anyadapter I can buy so I can just plugit into the internal firewire port on my firewire card? The end of the firewire cable coming from the front firewire port looks like the same kind of plug that is on the end of the wires coming from the front USB ports and the end of the wires from the case fans that plug into the mobo. Any suggestions will be greatly apppreciated.

A:Trouble with mobo/firewire connection

Well, first to the obvious (I'm sure you've tried this already); did you look in the instruction manual? If it's not listed there, your motherboard probably doesn't have the pins on it to plug in the firewire, even though your case has a firewire port.

From your question about the adaptor, I'm guessing that your firewire card doesn't have the same pin configuration as the wires coming from the front of the case. There is no adaptor that I know of; but perhaps you can Google for it.

Hello, Im not sure if this is in the right category. but here we go. For about a week now strange notifications from Norton have started popping up stating that a certain program is using 100% of one CPU (i.e today it said Photo Frame was the culprit) also it said that a file or something was using 1,074,000 handles, which is INSANE! Im not sure about the program or file though So next time it pops up ill write it down.

So, I am a little bit worried what is causing this all of a sudden, hopefully not a virus or something of that matter.

Summary at the bottom for you "TLDR"ers.

Alright so I just picked up a 9600GT from my friend. Unfortunately, my PC is a bit old, so it lacked the necessary 6 pin power cable coming from the PSU to successfully power the 9600GT. I would've left it in anyways...but you'll find out why I took it out in about 30 seconds providing you reach the next paragraph in that amount of time. The only cables I could find for a 6 pin adapter needed two power sources, and I only saw one of those two available inside my case, so I set that aside. But I digress, since this is not the issue, however this is:

So I get the 9600GT. I go upstairs to put it in, had to take out my network card (wasn't in use, ethernet cable was in the motherboard port) to be able to fit the card
since it needs two PCI-E slots. I fired it up with the 9600GT, worked fine other than the power issue. Had internet, nothing changed, etc. I shut it down. I took the card out to see what the actual cable I would need should look like, found the cable type...did some more random research, put the card back in an hour later. Fired it up, no internet. Restarted, no success, shut it down, sat dumbfounded for a few minutes, went to get the old network card that I took out. To be able to put it back in with enough space, I had to take out the 9600GT, so I did, and put my old @%$$bag video card in. Fired it up, installed the drivers I got off another computer, restarted, and I had the internet. I tried pu... Read more

I've been trying to sort it out for the better part of the last three days: I'm trying to connect my MoBo (Asus P5Q SE/R) to my Gfx card (Nvidia 9600 GT) with a S/PDIF cable. The aim is to make my DVI-HDMI cable transmit digital sound to a Samsung tv.

There is one unmarked S/PDIF 2-pin socket on Nvidia, which is quite easy to spot. However, I have a problem with the other side. I tried to connect the other end of my cable to a 3-pin S/PDIF socket on my mobo - to no avail.

Someone here suggested I should try connecting to an AAFP front panel audio connector. However, I'm not sure which pin to connect. The pin diagram for my MoBo is as follows. I assume ground should be attached to the GND pin, but what with the other cable? The cable itself looks like this.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:MoBo - Nvidia sound connection problem

Nevermind, found a solution. In short: go for the 3-pin S/PDIF connector, but don't trust the user manual on which pin does what. In my case the position of ground and S/PDIF was reversed.

Hi Everyone,

This is a strange and baffling problem. I’m not a complete novice and spent a lot time and tried many different things trying to solve it on my own, but nothing worked. Please bear with me as I’ll do my best to describe the situation.

Some time ago, I decided to build a budget pc to serve mainly as an HTPC of sorts. The idea was to spend the bare minimum initially and then upgrade the system as I go along. I therefore opted for a mobo that has (what I thought was) decent onboard graphics and HDMI output (ASUS M4A78LT-M) so that I could hook it up directly to my TV (Toshiba Regsa). As I mostly work on my laptop, I don’t have a computer screen (and no real reason to buy one).

Here are the system’s specs:
Mobo: ASUS M4A78LT-M
Processor: AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.0Ghz
CPU cooler: Stock
RAM: 4GB (2 X Crucial DDR3 PC3-10600; 3.25GB usable)
HDD: Western Digital Caviar 500GB
ODD: Pioneer DVR-A18LBK</SPAN>
OS: Windows 7 Professional (32bit, SP1)
From the start the video outputs gave me a headache. Working with the VGA connection, I was trying to install Windows XP on the machine, but the screen kept going blank after POST and giving the onscreen message &#8220;&#8220;unsupported video format&#8221;. I almost gave up thinking it was a compatibility issue with my TV or that the modo was DOA, but then I tried to install Windows 7 and suddenly everything worked fine. After installing the OS, I updated the bios to t... Read more

What connection have I missed? It wont turn on and it did before I moved it over.
I moved everything from a small case to a larger one because the CPU fan was directly behind the PSU so it overheated and made scorch marks on the side of the PSU box too but when I put it back together in the new case it doesn't turn on.

I think its to do with the wires I am holding in the 1st pic and I reckon they go into the connector I am holding it infront of but I have already tried every combination I think of and they SHOULD have been straight forwards because they have labels on.

If you need any more info or pics to help you guys help me solve it, just ask.

A:Winlogon.exe Leaking Handles

Hi Kevin,Looks like a mess. My suggestion, reinstall. I know that is a major pita when it comes to Terminal Services and setting up all the apps again, but with a hack you never know what they did. Can we clean up all the running malware, yes, but we will not be able to tell if any policy changes have been made, registry settings that lower your sam account enumeration, etc etc. So with all of that said, I seriously suggest you reinstall. If on the other hand, you want me to move forward and help you clean up the machine, I will be more than happy to.Regardless of what you do, do me a favor and submit a file for me.This file :C:\WINNT\system32\yahoo.exePlease submit it at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=3Just a note, if you want to do this right, you will have to disable terminal services while we fix it as the users logged on will make it difficult to properly clean. Also it is going to be nigh impossible to make sure that you do not get reinfected from programs running on other users profiles. I am willing to give it a try though. Up to you.

So I upgraded this morning from 8.1 to 10, so far I really like it.

I am curious about how Windows 10 handles it's updates? In 8.1, I could go into control panel, and double click on windows update, and it would find any available updates ( usually defender on a daily basis) and then some routine updates usually monthly. I always preferred to select the updates I wanted to install and then install them on my own time.

Don't know that I see a way to do this in Windows 10? I did find under settings, where I could choose to only download from Microsoft and to notify me rather than automatic - does that accomplish the same thing? Will it notify me and allow me to choose the updates I want to install?

I know sometimes previously in 8.1 updates might find some hardware drivers and offer them, I always get those from my hardware vendors, don't really want to be getting those from MS.

I am sure as time goes by this will become more clear to me, just curious now more than anthing.
Thanks for any tips,

A:Question on how Win 10 handles updates?

Windows 10 is taking a different approach and bundling updates together. Also, it is automatically installing them and taking much of the user interaction away. This could be good in that security vulnerabilities are patched no matter what (so long as you are internet connected), but some see it as a suppression of choice.

There are some things you can prevent updating automatically, such as other MS products, and you can also defer upgrades till later.

In addition, you are able to select that you do not want to have device drivers install automatically (found in device installation settings).

Hope this was helpful!

I am having a user with a problem accessing a file over a windows share to a server. He has the file open in Excel and is using it, leaves Excel open for some considerable amount of time and then when he goes to do some more work and save it he gets an error about lost writes.

The Yellow popup box in the system tray says:

Windows - Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \\servername\e\dir1\dir2\dir3\dir4\94AB7160. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."
Simultaneously on the server while this problem is occurring I go to check the open share handles and list all the files open over the shares. The file in question that is open above is not listed, so it looks like the share handle was lost and this is possibly why the user gets the error about not being able to write to the file.

There is no problem with permissions, he can save the file locally then copy it over the file at the destination but this sort of workaround should not be necessary. He can also edit the file in place, but it seems that after leaving it a while this weird behaviour happens.

Any ideas on troubleshooting or fixing this behaviour?

According to Task Manager

I can't imagine that is normal so what would cause that?

Any suggestions?

A:1.8MM File Handles Open

1) A bug in the app. They don't call CloseHandle() in appropriate places in their code due to some type of synchronisation oversight, most likely between different threads. This can only be fixed by recoding the app and removing the bug.

2) External code injected into the app is buggy and preventing the smooth closure of handles in one or more places in the app's code. This would be something like your anti-virus most likely. Uninstalling the AV temporarily would be a good thing to try.

Utilities like the (Sysinternals) "Process Explorer" and "Handle" can tell you more about the nature of those handles, and (if you've done that type of work before) attaching to the process with a debugger will give you more still. However, if this is not your code, you won't be able to fix the bugs without involvement from the vendor who sold it to you.

Good luck.

After going into a government website site I found that the layout of toolbars had changed.

First, there was just one line, each section being short of items on display (only be accessible by clicking an arrow).

Second, there were no handles to rearrange into two or more lines, which presumably would enable all icons to show.

Thirdly, I had text descrptions against icons. But they have vanished, and when I click the Size Icone / Customise the option to add text to icons is greyed out.

I have tried eveything, included re-starting, but to no avail.

I am having a problem with too many tokens/handles being opened by the svchost.exe process associated solely with the Remote Procedure Call service.

I have just recently installed Service Pack 3 for Windows XP, and shortly after that, I started having a problem where I couldn't open any application or any file in an open application. When I rebooted, the problem went away for a while, but would eventually come back.

Using Process Explorer, I saw that a svchost.exe process had more than 50,000 handles associated with it. According to Process Explorer, the only service associated with this svchost.exe process is Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [RpcSs].

Once I reboot, there are only a few hundred handles associated with this process, but they increase at a rate of about one per second. About 99% of the new ones are listed in Process Explorer as Type=Token, Name=NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:3e7, Access=0x000F01FF .

These tokens/handles never go away. Once their number increases to about 50,000 or so, I get the problem where I can't open any application or file and I have to reboot.

So, I need some assistance with making this problem stop. I don't know why so many tokens are being opened in the first place or what specifically they are meant to do in this case. I also don't know how to make them go away or at least have the handles close automatically.

Unlike other svchost.exe problems that I've seen posted, I don't get any Windows error messages. Also, it ... Read more

I have a slowing poroblem. I searched SVChosts on TSG and installed Process Explorer and did a scan with MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware. There were only 3 trackinh cookies in the SAS scan.

Today there are now 27,285 Handles, 809 Threads, and 80 programs down from 83 when I first looked at the display. I did not shut anything down.

I'm guessing I have a lot of stuff running that if I were aware of it I would delete. Thing is I don't know a handle from a thread and can't even decifer much of the services running in Task Manager.

On a different subject;
An odd thing as I came here to read up on Handles before posting. I read some then logged in. When I clicked to go to the main forums to post I was logged out. I refreshed and was still logged out. Is that as odd as it seems? I have only been using IE9 for a few days but I'd guessed that it would work the same as IE8 which did not log me out unlesss I clicked on logout from anysite I was signed into.

Well here they are, I'm a little hard of english; but I tried to phrase them the best I could:
In Windows 7 Ultimate 64X is their anyway to have another follow in the foot steps of 'explorer.exe' i.e. meaning that it will start or restart another whens starts.

I run an auto text completion program; every so often it goes idle and I have to manually end the process and restart it.. Is their anyway to have the operating system do for me?

In future versions of Kaspersky internet security/total security I would like to see changes made to way kaspersky handles appcations as I have set my KIS set to block untrusted applications and I also have the trust digital Signatures turned off for extra protection as sometimes digital Signatures can be fake or affected by malware etc currently when these options are active kaspersky will quite offen block trusted applications/installers and it can be quite annoying as the only way to allow a trusted installer/applications with these options active is to toggle the trust digital Signatures setting on and off or change the appcation control settings and if kaspersky has alreadly blocked the installer/application from running you have to open up the main user interface click on more tools then appcation control then you have scroll down the list until you come to the untrusted area then you have to select on the app you want to trust and move to the trusted area by hand. so I would like to see a way for Kaspersky to be able to identify the difference between a good installer/ application or a bad one without having to change the settings all the time. for example, KIS could use the cloud a bit more as well as the Kaspersky security network to determine if the installer or app being run is safe to run or not and maybe this would also improve the detection rates for unknown files as well help those users who like some of the more advanced options enabled without having to these... Alright, I downloaded a pretty big movie file, not considering it was an avi, although I'd had problems with them before. So, I play it in WMP, Winamp, Realplayer, and a few other players. They all play smoothly, but slow and off-sync video. Then, at a certain point, it tries to catch up and skips about a minute's worth of video.

I tried to update my display adapter driver(nVidia Aladdin TNT2), which didn't help. In fact, it(like in the past) made my screen jump and freeze the pc, so I rolled it back.

I've modified the player and display adapter settings for video and hardware acceleration, but bringing them down, along with the resolution and colors, didn't help.

Mpegs, wmvs, and pretty much every video file BUT avi plays just fine on my computer, with enough CPU memory. Could someone please give me some suggestions on speeding up the video, or finding the source of the problem?

A little sidenote, as well: My computer used to play avis fine, but that was five years ago, and I have since then filled the hard drive to about 1 GB left, as well as installed WinXP. So... help?

Windows XP. New hard drive. Installed IE7. (Hate IE8.) But the little slider handles that used to allow me to move left and right the little icons at the top and the drop down menus at the top "file-edit-view" etc. are missing. WHY? Anyone know how to correct this?

These "handles" look like a little verticle line of dots. They were always there before, when I had my old hard drive. But recently, even when I had IE8 (before I went back to IE7) they were missing.

Locate Malicious Handles Quickly

A lot of us, I'm sure, use process explorer or process hacker (some might just use task manager) to view, verify and analyze the processes running on our computers. If a strange process shows up (bykxlvd.exe, for instance) we'll quickly start to investigate and take whatever actions we think necessary.

Some malicious files (the Zeus Trojan, for instance) may not show up as a running process, but instead may simply "hook" into a program by creating a handle to it. Because of this, we won't see it in task manager, and unless we are being very detailed, we might miss it in Process Explorer or Process Hacker.

The following command line command will enumerate all the handles registered in your system, then search for names that contain .exe, and then write the results to a text file and place it on your desktop.

In this way, you can look at a (hopefully) short list of executables and quickly determine if any look out of the ordinary--and then further investigate if necessary.

What you'll Need: Handles, by Sys Internals (197kb). Please either install the tool into your System32 folder, or create an entry in your PATH system variable (My Computer>Properties>Advanced>Environment Variables). If you don't do this, then you will need to include the full path name of the tool when using this command.

How to do it: Run this command in a command prompt (Note that you can also save this command to a text file and save it with a .ba... Read more

Ever since yesterday, I get instances of Explorer.exe randomly generating and sucking up CPU cycles, memory, and handles. I don't know where it's coming from. But it seems that a couple instances of ctfmon.exe always appear before it happens. I've run AVG, Spybot, and MBAM to try to track this down. I've tried starting the system with only Microsoft services. I'm no closer to a solution.
I can't troubleshoot this one on my own. Help.

OPML is a dialect of XML that is designed for outlines (it's also used for RSS feed lists and the like). It's not hard to find an outliner for windows (MS Word itself has a nice outline mode), but I haven't yet found (except for one seeming abandonware product) a Windows Outliner that reads/writes OPML natively. Even software like Bonsai has a python script or something that you have to use to convert it.

Does anyone know of a good outliner for Windows (or even a bad one) that can handle the OPML file format naturally (read/write), and is still being sold or maintained by someone?

A:Outline Editor that Naturally Handles OPML

hello, where you able to find a Windows outliner which can read/write to OPML without having to import / export?

I didn't know whether to put this in General, or Hardware, or Drivers, or what. But here goes.

This particular system has Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit, with an Abit KN9 Ultra motherboard. I was having some USB issues (a particular external USB drive wouldn't work when plugged into the front USB ports) so I started some investigating.

I thought that the built-in USB ports on a motherboard (on the back of the computer) are connected to a particular USB hub which is handled by a specific USB driver. But that doesn't appear to be true!

This is strange: When my Microsoft optical mouse is plugged into a particular port on the back of the computer, Device Manager says this when viewed by connection:
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
USB Root Hub
Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse
Microsoft USB Comfort Optical Mouse 1000
(Those are indented to indicate "child" devices)

That would indicate that this particular USB port is a low-speed USB port, which worried me. BUT, if I unplug the mouse, and plug the printer in to the port that the mouse was connected to, I see this in Device Manager:
Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Controller
USB Composite Device
Canon MF4320-4350
(Those are indented too)

...which means that the SAME physical USB port is now a USB 2.0 port (Enhanced).

How can the same USB port be driven by Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller driver one minute, and Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller the next minute? If that's how things are done these days... Read more

A:USB controller and hub weirdness, which driver handles which port

I would say, if the device is not USB 2 capable it uses the Standard driver and if it is USB 2 it uses the Enhanced driver. My HP DVD-RW USB drive shows up under Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller but my Logitech keyboard and mouse show up under Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller.

I open up internet explorer when starting up or restarting but the wireless doesn't catch up with it so you get a no connection and then you have to refresh after about 5 seconds. Here are what are listed on my device manager but I'm not sure which of these handle this and what driver I could update or switch

Atheros AR8151 PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller NDIS 6.20
Intel Centrino Advanced N6205

Here are my options from Acer:
Wireless LAN Atheros Wireless LAN Driver
Wireless LAN Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver
Wireless LAN Intel Wireless LAN Driver
Wireless LAN Realtek Wireless LAN Driver 1005.12.0105.2011

A:Wireless isn't loading as fast. Which driver handles it?

On most laptops. It does take 5 seconds or so for the Wireless to connect and authenticate to your Wireless Router using what ever security you have set.

To see which Wireless Card you have, Click on Start, in the search box, type Device Manger. Click to open it.
under network adaptors, click the expantion arrow. It should tell you if it's Atheros, Or Broadcom, etc etc.

Then check the website for a new driver.

There is a lot of confusion regarding how CIS behaves when a file is updated (modified\changed). I think what is most confusing is that alerts and auto-sandboxing occurs for what the user knows to be a Trusted file. They do not expect CIS to treat Trusted files in such a manner - and - think this is a random, out-of-the-blue quirk\bug. It is not; CIS is working as intended.

When any Trusted file is updated (modified), then CIS will change the rating to Unrecognized - and consequently - alerts and\or auto-sandboxing of the file will occur (of course this depends upon the user's chosen settings).

For example, MBAM has been recently updated by Malwarebytes. Naturally, user wants that new, juicy update. So how will CIS behave in this situation? MBAM is a safe, trusted app and so are all its modules. What will happen in CIS when the files are updated?

In the CIS file list, all the modules were rated as Trusted by Comodo. During installation of the update, CIS re-rates all changed and newly introduced modules to Unrecognized. Notice the Rating column. mbam.exe has been changed to Unrecognized. mbam.sys and mcaw.sys are MBAM drivers. They too were rated as Trusted, but now have been changed by CIS to Unrecognized.

Also, CIS will create a "duplicate" File List entry when a file is updated; it doesn't mean there are multiple installations of the same file -it's just a way to keep track of when the file was modified and - technically - show that... Read more

Hello all,

my problem is rather simple. Every few minutes, my computer (Windows 7 64) freezes for a couple of seconds and on the taskbar, the handles (the three parallel dotted lines) disappear and reappear and so does the language selection drop-down menu in the taskbar. I assume it is some process that is restarting but I don't know which one and why. Any help is appreciated!

A:Handles of taskbar disappear and reappear every few minutes

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

You might want to try Process Monitor to see just what going on.

See this post for some info on filtering on the Explorer.exe:
Missing start menu icons

You would not want to limit the returns to those impacting only the registry... you want to see all activity by Explorer.exe.
