Preferred Solution: windows7 activation will not work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dont give the key number when asked.
Make the install
Test it
Install programs etc and make sure it works.

Then activate by phone

The problem is that the upgrade key does not recognize the fact that you had an underlying OS that quaifies for an upgrade.

After a windows7 installation is there an entry in the event viewer or some other log somewhere that tells you when windws7 was activated?

The computer I am working on was getting the error that windows was not genuine. I was able to activate windows7 with the proper prod key. I am curious if the windows7 was activated previously or if there was another problem. The computer also came into my office with a bad stick of ram. I am not sure if the bad memory caused windows to "deactivate" or if the windows7 was never activated.

In other cases I've seen issues when imaging or when infected with malware you get error messages that say your hardware config changed and you need to reactivate windows....

If your COA sticker is only for Windows Home Premium, than unless you purchased an Upgrade, that's all it's licensed for - and any other Windows install is counterfeit.

You need to reformat and reinstall using legitimate media - either the manufacturer's Recovery media, or a retail license for Windows 7 Ultimate (or the recovery media + an Upgrade Key)

I reinstalled windows back in 2014 because something wasn't right. I don't know if anything was wrong but it was behaving oddly so I decided to reinstall from the hidden partition. As
soon as it was complete I made 5 recovery disks. Three weeks or so ago I noticed my cooling fan spike in revolutions, very fast. I immediately switched to Task Mgr. to find explorer.exe at 3,605,343K(Process tab,
memory private working set) it usually runs at a max of 22,000K. Because I am not able to let things go, I did some exploring of my own. In event viewer I had 238 warning events where processes had leaked registry handles from user S-1-5-21. FBAgent.exe was
involved in 229 of them along with winlogon.exe, and a couple of others I can't find the names to right now. They were then accessing things like root certificates, my certificates, passwords, verifications, etc. I try to go to microsoft.com at my browser
says my AV won't let me do so because it isn't a secure site. The certificates don't match. That happened at almost every site I visited. After that happened, a day or two later, the fan speed kicked up again and this time it was Host process for windows services(netsvcs)
and it is at 5,000,000K. I look to the services tab in TaskMgr and there are 17 services using that one host. Also, all the .dll in the computer are opened and being accessed by something. Haven't figured out what just yet. In resource monitor my HD is at

I am unable to find a suitable driver for my computer. I have a Compaq Presario R3000AP 3.2 GHz 2.5GB Ram and have upgraded to windows 7 with SP1.
I did a clean install and all the windows 7 drivers were installed and are compatible except for the Realtek AC'97 audio driver.

I downloaded and installed the Realtek AC'97 Codecs from the Realtek website, but unfortunately this was unsuccessful . Then I downloaded and installed the SP29586 Realtek AC'97 Driver version 6.0.1.6305 from the HP website and this was also unsuccessful. Finally I downloaded from the Microsoft website the same Audio Driver version 6.0.1.6305 and installed it but unfortunately again this was unsuccessful.

In the Device manager under Sound, video and game controllers it show below "Realtek AC'97 Audio device", version 6.0.1.6305 but in properties is shows "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

Windows 7 does recognize the sound device, but is unable to completely install it, even though under the "driver file details tab" it show drivers installed in the windows directory.

I understand that Microsoft does not support the Realtek driver, but there must be some kind of fix or even someone out there that is able to rewrite the driver somehow.

Seems a shame to have to get a new computer because of this, as it is very fast with windows 7 even though it is only a Pentium 4.

I have no more options and I am asking for help. PLEASE!

While dual booting, I often check my email while in Windows 7 and have noted the inappropriately designed interface.
It is a nightmare trying to access the email because the whole interface is out of wack.
For this reason, I am interested in finding a replacement. I.e., would it be compatible with Vista Live Mail, and hopefully replacing this whacky program.

Therefore, I am seeking feedback about how to go about doing this, and is hoping that someone out there can shed some light as to the feasibility of doing this successfully.
If you can share any input, please let me know.

Hello guys,

I'm coming here after a while of looking around for a more feasible solution, and after talking to an M$ tech. Apparently a retail key can only be installed a number of 3 times, even if it's on the same computer.

Here's what's going on:

I have bought an OEM copy for my desktop, which had the Retail copy already installed and activated, and changed the product key on the desktop to have it activated on the OEM key, so this way I'd be sure I can use the retail on my laptop, on which I recently added the Crucial M4 SSD. A month later, after being sure that Windows works without issues, I decided to activate it, that was today. Issue: I can't use my activation key that came with the Windows Pro Retail that I bought in 2009, because, supposedly, it's been installed on 3 different computers, which is simply untrue. The M$ tech told me that the phone activation would work, but it was not the case. . If useful, the same tech told me that he couldn't activate it for me because "it had been used on 3 computers".

I have rearmed the evaluation period for the time being, but I do not want to use any illegal means of activating Windows. What I know is that I will never touch a retail version of Windows again, it is just an overpriced piece of garbage, but I am not willing to pay for a new key either. Right now I just feel like M$ just stole nearly $350 from me.

A:Activation key does not work anymore

Hello Sbrideau,

A product key number can only be activated on 3 computers at the same time if it is one that came with a retail Family Pack copy of Windows 7.

Otherwise, you can only have a retail product key number activated on only 1 computer at a time, with it uninstalled or removed from any other computer it was activated on first. There is not a limit of how many times you are able to activate it as long as it removed from any other installation first, so I have no idea where the operator got the 3 limit from. With that said, you may have to do a phone activation if you have activated it often in a short period.

Either something is missing, or the MS activation operator misunderstood you. You should be able to activate it over the phone. Try doing the phone activation again and wait for a operator if available.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I just completed a repair installation on a machine, and of course, I have to reactivate windows before I can log in.

Well, I go and attempt to change the product key, and while I'm in the activation window, the following keys do not work:

E U I O A S L Z N 1 5 0

This presents a problem because I need quite a few of those to use the key that I have.

Those keys work fine on the login screen, so it isn't a keyboard issue.

I've already attempted to do the repair installation a second time. I've also tried using the character map functions (alt 0191 etc) to bring up the letters, but the same ones do not work.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Can I use his disk to install on my PC, use my legit key, and get the benefit of already having SP1 without having to go through the experience of the two-step process (original, then update to SP1) with my CD? Not a big deal, but a valuable option for the bandwidth-challenged consumer.

As long as you are installing your same Vista Home Premium edition, you can use your 64-bit product key number during the installation of the 32-bit Vista instead. 32-bit and 64-bit Vista key numbers are the same. You just have to use the same key number with the same original edition (ex: Ultimate, Home Premium) of Vista instead.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I have an older Acer 1410 that I recently replaced the HDD on.

On the Microsoft sticker, the product version reads:

"Windows 7 Home Prem OA Acer Group"

Underneath that is the product key.

I know I had a 64bit version of Windows 7 installed, so I downloaded an ISO of Windows 7 Home Premium from digital river and installed it on my computer. (The laptop did not come with it's own installation disc)

However, when I try to activate the product using the product key, I am told that the product key is not correct. I recall being able to call Microsoft to activate over the telephone in the past, but it appears this option is not available any more?

What can I do to activate my copy of Windows 7 with the product key I have?

A:Windows 7 Home Premium activation won't work

Check the letters carefully....Sometimes a 8 looks like a B, 0 looks like an O etc. etc.

Hi Everyone

Apologies for not including any Log files at this stage, but I would appreciate your thoughts on the following:

I've just installed Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium on a new SSD for my aged Acer Aspire 5920G. Following installation, many updates, including SP1 were automatically added through Windows update.
I then came to Activating, and when it was refused, suddenly realised and remembered (after all these years) that I had in fact purchased a retail version of the Upgrade, and had originally installed it over the top of Vista.

After searching Seven Forums I found and used the work-around binary file, provided on these forums for such a situation. With this I successfully Activated.

After continuing to install s/w and generally set things up, I realised that Windows update was no longer running. I manually set it going, and it has just continued to search for updates for hours without anything else happening. Further investigation using the MS Fixit tool revealed the Error code 0x8007005, (Access Denied, as I've since found out).

I've tried every fix I can find, including SFC Scannow and SubInAcl, without any joy.

Am I correct to assume this has been caused by my clean install of an upgrade version? Can anyone suggest a remedy without me having to start again with a new full copy of Windows 7?

Thanks for any thoughts/suggestions.

Hello, I am having trouble activating Windows on my laptop after a fresh OS reinstall and would appreciate any help you can give.

Specs:
Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13
Processor: Intel U7300 1.3GHz
System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
RAM: 3 GB
Memory: 138 GB

Backstory:
I bought this laptop from a programmer friend in 2010. He had installed an OEM copy of Windows 7 pro (and there is nothing on the bottom listing the Windows product key). Recently I decided to install a fresh copy of Windows because it was slow and had too much crap on it. I ran Belarc Advisor to obtain the 25-digit Windows product key and other application product keys. I put a Windows install disk on a flash drive and reinstalled Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

Problem:
However, when I try to activate Windows using the key that was registered to the device for the last 3 years, it says "The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 key." I found a live support site for Microsoft problems, but after I explained the issue they tried to sell me another copy of Windows for $399.99 (WTF!). I tried Lenovo's online live support and they said to talk to Microsoft, not them.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to activate Windows using the key I have, or do I have to obtain a new key? If I have to obtain a new key, do I have to reinstall Windows? With an OEM disk? Would I need to buy a Thinkpad OEM disk? What is the cheapest way to resolve this?

Can you contact your friend and get the COA with the key on it?

If you cannot get the COA key from your friend then the cheapest way and not have to reinstall would be to get a OEM Windows 7 Pro Microsoft Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit - Newegg.com

Have an HP computer G60. It came preloaded with windows 7. I dont like windows 7 or windows vista, so I decided to buy a retail windows XP disk, and install that on the machine. This was about a couple weeks ago.

Yesterday, I noticed the computer asking me to activate windows. I had activated it when I first loaded it onto the machine. There have been no hardware changes made to the machine. Why is it asking me for activation again? Whats even more funny is that the key that I put in the first time doesnt activate windows anymore.

Whats going on? How do I stop the thing from asking me for the activation key and giving the countdown of days?

Hey everyone, calling all repair techs! I have a question. I worked on a dell inspiron that needed a new hard drive. I backed up activation with advanced tokens manager and eveything went well with backup. I installed the new hard drive, used my windows 7 disc to reinstall windows and then used advanced tokens manager to restore activation. It said success and windows said it was activated. After i restarted, windows was no longer activated. I contacted microsoft and they told me my product key was blocked because it was used more than once. In the end i had to get the restore discs from dell to get everything activated again. What i dont understand is that isnt advanced tokens manager or any activation backup supposed to avoid needing OEM discs? I did see that on ATM's website it says dont use after hardware change. I changed the harddrive so is that the reason it did not work? Because some OEM activation files were still on the old hard drive? I am quite confused. Input is appreciated!
Thanks
-alex

A:Changed hard drive on inspiron, activation restore did not work?

I have never used any activation backup software, however I have reloaded countless computers, I have never had a problem re-activating windows by using the key on the outside of the computer itself. (On dell laptops this is usually on the bottom of the computer or under the battery). I can tell you that dell uses either generic keys or random keys for their images when loading new computers. The key that you backed up would not match your oem key on the sticker that should be on the bottom of the laptop. I know this because I have had several computers with partially worn off windows keys and I tried to compare the key in the registry to the key on the bottom of the computer to recover it, the keys did not match.

Likewise the key that was used from the restore disc would not match your OEM sticker either.

EDIT: if you have an oem sticker (that is readable) on the bottom you can use any windows disc that matches your version (home, pro, etc.) to load windows and then activate it by typing in that key.

I have performed a system recovery (using the Dell Backup and Recovery App)  which took the laptop back to the state that it was when it came from the factory. Since then I get prompted to activate Windows 8 but I get a "Windows cannot activate right now" message all the time. What do I need to do to re-activate Windows 8?

Many Thanks

A:Windows 8 re-activation does not work after running Dell Backup and Recovery

Hi GeorgiosM,
This error can happen if the computer is not connected to the Internet.
If the computer is not connected to a wirless/wired Internet then connect the computer to the wired/wireless internet and try to activate Windows 8.

I have an HP Compaq dx2000mt desktop that has windows7 32bit enterprise installed on it. I tried to install windows7 home 32bit to replace the enterprise OS. As I was installing it stated the old OS would be marked, XXX.old and it went forward, then came to a point where there were booting errors. and it stopped installing. Now I am left with a half install, and a full OS the boot section now in its own drive named disk 0 system reserved.
I partioned the C drive and allocated 20gb and tried to install there. I received the same errors seems that my boot.ini is stuck in the system reserved and I cant figure out how to incorporate disk 0 over to disk C, so that my boot is in the same disk drive.
I have really messed this one up. I have installed an operating system before and never had so much trouble.
Any advice would be helpful.
And please if you have an answer, something for me to do, it needs to be A.B.C.'d out step by step as Im not an expert. But I guess I already proved that...
Thank you in advance.

My new computer arrived today with Windows7 64 installed. (happydance)
My old computer has Windows7 32 installed.

Before I start attacking both computers, thought I better ask beforehand or the b/f will 'kill' me

Can I remove the hard drive from the old computer, install it as a 2nd drive in the new computer and be able to access all the data (documents, photos, messages saved in outlook and my favourites etc) on it from the new Windows7 64bit primary drive?

(I wasn't sure which sub-forum to ask this question in, hope in here is OK.)

thanks,
Jane

A:Windows7 64 reading windows7 32 drive?

Hi Jaibird,

A hard disk is not 32-bit or 64-bit and does not depend upon the installed OS.

Yes, in some parts and no in others.
You can access files/folders from the partition Hard Disk (Documents, Photos, Favourites).. But you cannot get the messages saved in outlook.

Be advised that the (Documents, Photos, Favourites) will NOT merge into your current Windows 7 64-Bit.

Hiya,

I am having a problem with my windows 7 home premium 64bit. I wiped my computer to try and get a new graphic card to work( never got it working, gave up and went back to my old graphic card) Since then I have had to wipe my computer a number of times, I kept having to wipe my computer since the same problem kept happening. Which is that my windows will crash and wont work after about 1-2mins after start up.

I thought it was my disk so I installed it from a usb windows installer and has been runnign fine for about 2 weeks until I was free to do the phone activation of my windows, I phoned up the activation after using my computer for a while then after I phoned and it came up genuine (like normal) I went to get a drink befor doing more work and once getting back to my computer I opened a new tab on firefox it was very slow on the internet so I clsoed my browser and tried to reopen it and but it woulnd't open windows has frozen completely so I pressed the restart button on my case and let it boot up and then it wouldn't let me do anything.

Does anyone have any idea of how come my computer seem to freeze and refuse to work once I use the windows phone activation?

A:Windows wont work after using windows 7 home phone activation

What makes you think it is the activation? Did you go click on "Start Button", right click on "Computer" and left click on "Properties"? When the screen comes up scroll down to the right bottom of the screen and you should see a "Genuine Windows Logo". If it says something different then there is an activation problem.

Hi there
I recently changed a MOBO from an INTEL based one to one using an AMD PHENOM processor -- W7 didn't want any new activation rather surprisingly. (Broken Mobo and I had a spare ASUS MOBO lying around).

However the first time I switched to using a LAN cable instead of a Wifi USB adapter I got the "Hardware has changed - please activate windows. OK it activated fine -- however seems strange to me that a MOBO change didn't call for any activation (Disks, memory, DVD device etc were canaballized from the old machine) but a simple switch from Wifi to a LAN did. !!! The internal logic of the activation process seems totally illogical and bizarre. (Running W7 x-64 ULTIMATE). !!!

Cheers
jimbo
