Preferred Solution: Computer very slow, Browsers take forever to load if at all.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Greetings CharlyRenay and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.When you post your reply, use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Please do this after booting into Safe Mode with Networking, if necessary.===================================================Multiple Antivirus Programs-------------------I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both products attempting to access the same file at the same time. Therefore please remove all but one of the Antivirus programs currently on your computer, even if only one is running. You can uninstall the program(s) via Add/Remove Programs, or Programs and Features in the Control Panel. Constant Guard Anti-MalwareNorton Security Suite===================================================Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool - Run Fix in Normal or Safe Mode--------------------Press the Windows key + r on your keyboard at the same time. There's evidence of a hack so please check this by running TDSSKillerDownload TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.

Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.

Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

"%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l report.txt

The last week or so I noticed that my system seems to have slowed way down in regard to Internet use. It seems pages take forever to upload. Sometimes it just hangs. It doesn't matter whether I'm using Firefox or IE. Offline functions such as using Word or Encarta do not seem to be affected. I did all the usual things like updating and running CW Shredder, AdAware and SptBot which did not find any significant problems. I also ran a scan disk and defragged the hard drive. I also unplugged the modem and turned off the power to the computer so I could do a real cold boot. Nothing seems to improve the performance. I have recently installed Firefox I had no problems before this when I was using Firefox 1.0.7. My system is using Windows 98se as an OS and has a 256 MB RAM with an 800 MHz Pentium III processor. I also have EZArmor installed which is an anti-virus and firewall package. Any ideas on how to improve the speed of Internet browsing?

On all browsers my pages will not load most of the time or may start but freeze shortly after. It is also taking forever for the browser itself to load. Chrome seems to be the worst. In my previous post after running a program and reboot I got a floating box "Input Not Supported" box that bounces around the screen like a screensaver and stays on top of everything else. I also noticed I keep hearing clicking noises from the speakers also. Thank you so much for your help.

ok this is gonna be a bit long but i want the details there. the issue pc is my old pc. it has windows 7 its an asus msn-la motherboard i cloned this drive and used it in my new pc. after a few months my new pc's drive died and i took the old drive from the issue pc(witch was not giving issues at this time) and stuck it into my new pc until my replacement drive came. when i got the replacement drive i cloned the drive again onto the replacement drive and then put the new drive in the new pc had no issues there. put the old drive back into the issue pc (this is when issues started) the pc booted up to the windows desktop loading screen fast but once it got there it sat there for like 5 min before loading into windows. once it loaded into windows it was un usable for around 10 min while it loaded background stuff. once it finally loads into windows if i try to open anything its still responding extremely slow. is there anything i could do to fix this or is this going to me a re install only situation? i did try to use a windows 7 disk to do a startup repair but it claimed i couldn't do it because i dident install from that disk.

I run both IE 8 and Firefox on my Dell Dimension system. I'm having problems now with both browsers taking forever to load. This may be a virus or network problem. IE 8 just loaded now after 15 minutes (exactly - I timed it).

- Once it's loaded once, both browsers load in normal amounts of time.
- I haven't downloaded any new add-ons lately unless one browser or the other installed one in the background.
- The problem just started today after a reboot.
- I've also noticed that my network icon in the taskbar doesn't show up anymore when I first boot but by the time IE opens, it has showed up.
- Using ipconfig, I did determine that I am on the network and connected immediately after boot up (router also shows me connected immediately).
- I've tried running IE from the command line with iexplore.exe -extoff. It didn't make any difference. I don't know if this works with IE 8 though.
- When I click to open either web browser, the process shows up right away in Task Manager and remains.
- I have all the latest updates to both browsers that I know of.
- I've run a complete system scan with McAfee (fully updated as of today.)

Now I've run out of ideas on what to try. I appreciate any help!

What should you do when your laptop is running really slow, using Windows explorer is taking too long to load pages. I have Norton utilities and regularly scan my machine and some tracking cookies are deleted. Otherwise, no spyware is found. But my laptop is way too slow. My startup folder is empty.

I have windows task master open and it shows 80+ processes even when I'm not doing anything. Physical memory greater than 66%. My CPU usage is 3%. I have 4 GB of memory and am running 64 bit windows home edition on my Toshiba L675 laptop.

What troubleshooting steps can I take to identity what is running, identify what I can get rid of, and tell me how I get rid of it. How can I troubleshoot what is causing this laptop to run so slow.

There have been times when it is so slow that my keystrokes are not shown. At times, I have taken out the battery for a minute and then put it back in. That seems to help the keystroke issue.

I appreciate the troubleshooting steps,

A:Slow performance - Windows 7 lost keystrokes, forever to load

How many items are checked in the startup tab of msconfig? You should leave your antivirus checked, but beyond that it gets iffy. Uncheck a bunch and see if things improve. I have 6 checked.

How many non-Microsoft services are running? 5? 20? I've got 9. Do away with as many as you dare as an experiment. See if you lose any required functionality. See if speed improves.

I rarely have over 60 processes.

You've got an i3 with a likely modestly-performing 5400 rpm hard drive. I wouldn't expect miracles, but if it was once "fast" and is now "slow", you should be able to get to the source of the change.

I used to have an Acer laptop until the screen cracked about a week ago and I replaced it with an HP Pavilion. When I was using the Acer laptop, I never had any problems with my college's wifi, but a few days after I switched to the HP laptop I noticed a decrease in browsing speed. This decrease was extreme if the page I was trying to load contained images/videos. Additionally, my download speed was horrific, at about 9 KB/sec. Lastly, I have had trouble connecting to the network, with my computer telling me it can't connect several times before it connects. I uninstalled Java, disabled firewall, uninstalled antivirus programs, cleared browser cache, which helped a bit. Then, oddly at about 8 PM last night, the browsing/download speed of my computer returned to normal. However, it is as slow as ever this morning. I'm fairly certain the increase in speed was due to the fewer number of people connected to the network. Any ideas on what the root cause of the problem might be?

Hey, its been a while now since I've been having these problems. So I've fianlly decided to post on a forum and ask for help!

I have windows xp sp2 on a dual core p4 3.06 Ghz processor, 504MB of ram.

My computer used to work perfectly well before all of a sudden these problems started occurring. I have formatted my windows a hundred times but after a couple of days, the problems arise again.

Okay so to start with, my windows is taking forever to load. Once it loads, the windows introductory sound skips and glitches as it is with all the other music i play with itunes or any other software. When I play a video, the video also skips and makes weird sounds. My computer is being very slow with everything. When I open the task manager, I see the CPU usage varying constantly from 0 to 16 upto 70 percent, even when the windows is idle and system idle process is at a constant 98 percent. The system image is using 75000k plus memory (I thought it might be important in some way so I've mentioned it).

All this is really annoying. Is it a virus/malware or something? I have AVG anti-virus and everybody has told me its pretty good. Or is it a hardware problem with RAM or whatever. Please help me I'm clueless and I really don't want to reformat my windows AGAIN!

I'm posting my hijackthis log for you guys just incase it helps.

Hi-have been struggling with my system taking 2-3 minutes to find drivers for any memory stick I plug in to any of 3 USB ports on my Acer 1810T. When the process finally completes, the transfer speeds are about 1MB/s or less.

Another (possibly related?) problem is when I insert any SD card in the dedicated slot for the first time, everything is fine. Once I remove and either re-insert (or insert a different card), nothing appears. I get a message saying "process is already in memory". I have to reboot to get things working again.

Any advice greatly appreciated,

A:USB Sticks slow transfer speeds, system takes forever to load drivers

Hello fugue,

Are you properly ejecting all devices? There should be an option to safely remove devices.

Do you have all windows updates installed?

Go into device manager and look for any exclaimation marks. If you see some, update those drivers.

The issue is that my laptop runs, how to say it....sluggish. On the one hand it's runnig but i feel like it's faaaaar from how it could run.

A:Computer very sluggish. IE takes forever to load.

Hello -

As before, you seem well protected, and nothing is apparent in your HJT log. Do you do regular system maintenance, like deleting temp files and cookies, and defrag?

Do other programs access the internet freely? Such as updating your protection tools or using your email program?

Do you use an alternative browser such as Firefox or Opera? (You should, but that's for another tale) If so, do they experience the same slowness?

What sort of internet connection do you have? Broadband, dialup, modem, router, etc....

HJT is only one of several analysis tools at our disposal. Let's see if another one can find something amiss.

Hello, my computer gets to the black Windows XP load screen with the loading bar and it just stays there, loading and loading and loading. All the safe modes and last known good config don't work either, they just get stuck loading.
I haven't installed any new hardware or software, and there was no BSOD. this just happened suddenly one day with no prior warning, and now I can't access my pictures and music and such.
I tried to repair from the Windows XP CD and it also just gets stuck and does nothing.
If you need specs, tell me.

Please help me and thank you.

Hi doubt and welcome to TSF
Can you start in Safe Mode?
Tap F8 repeatedly whilst the computer is first starting and it will give you the option to start in Safe Mode. See if that is any quicker or if it's the same and post back.

Edit: Just seen that you have checked Safe Mode. Have you got your XP CD?

I have experienced a significant slow-down in my various browsers' ability to load pages over the past few months.
I use IE9 and Firefox18.  Most of the slow-down seems to be with loading ads and other content external to the particular website I am visiting (YouTube embedded video player, etc.).
On some websites, once they load, I experience freezing when scrolling with my mouse wheel -- text that blurs across the screen, etc.  This even happens on the bleepingcomputer.com site.
I'm running a 3 year-old HP desktop, wireless cable Internet connection, and have not had this issue to this extent until recently.  I installed BOINC 6 weeks ago, but the slow browser problem pre-dates that software by at least a month or more.
I've run MBAM scans - nothing found.  Online speed tests - throughput is fine.
Any suggestions on how to proceed in addressing this issue would be greatly appreciated!

Hello everyone,
I did not know where to post about this problem I have been having, No matter what webbrowser I use, they are all slow to load and crash! I have tried scanning for viruses, spyware, spamware and malware, but nothing shows up except cookies! I do not know what is causing this problem with all of my webbrowsers!
It first started on Internet Explorer a couple of years ago. So I decided to change to FireFox then that started to slow down and then crash on me also, but not as often as the Internet Explorer. Then I tried Google Chrome. Then that started to slow down and crash, but not as often as the Internet Explorer. It happens everytime I load up or click on a Yahoo.como page or any of the Yahoo sites: Yahoo Fantasy Sports, Yahoo Autos, etc..
At first I thought it was because I had too many tabs or windows open at one time. But that was not the cause. I tried clearing the WEbbrowsers' cauche and clearing browsing history, that only helped for about a halff hour to about a hour! I even tried clearing the computer's cache, being careful of what files got cleared, Same results! I even tried cearing old files, again being careful of what got cleared. Only helped for a little bit. I even doing a web search on this very subject, but found too many differing opinions on what causes this to happen. I tried some of the recommendations, as I listed above, but nothing has worked to prevnt this from happening. The only other things that I can think of ar... Read more

I have long had problems with slow starting up of the PC. I have tried removing virtually all start up programmes, running Scans, defrag etc. The main problem has been when loading the browser. It effects IE and Firefox. The hard disc light flashes away sometimes for half an hour before the browser loads and you can hear it whirring very slowly. Even when the internet browser loads, it initially runs so slowly that it often malfunctions and needs re-starting which leads to further problems as the ' do you want to report the problem to microsoft message is being generated in the background at a snail's pace.

Probably a rather unclear description of the problem , but I am happy to clarify if anyone has an idea as this really drives me mad. I always have to allow at least half an hour before I can expect to get online. I had convinced myself it was IE, so downloaded Firefox. I think, Firefox may be slightly better, but the problem is still there.

What is your maintenance program for your system? Please name the programs you use so we can assist you further

I would suggest for starters you download and run CCleaner to clear out you temporary internet files.

Please, if you are not familiar with the software read the review thoroughly and do not use the registry cleaner option of the program.

Well just recently my computer has been slowing to a crawl when I do (normally) simple tasks. Usually I can run a spyware scan on top of playing iTunes, working on a Word document and much more with no problems, but today I noticed that suddenly a scan by AVG alone is using nearly 70-80 percent of my processing power . Also Windows has been taking darn near forever to load. More than 2 minutes. I know this can't be normal. I've had this problem before but received almost no replies so please someone help. This is really ruining my computing experience. By the way I have an AMD Athlon X2 4200+. Any guesses as to what the problem might be? Please guys any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Hi all, I have had this problem for about a week now, but it has gradually worsened.
As the title states, my internet is extremely slow, and I cannot load certain content heavy pages such as fileplanet.com, gamershell.com etc.
My laptop (Xp) is wireless, I have tried direct connection to the router to no avail.
My dad's desktop (Xp) is wired, and also has the same problem.
My mum's laptop (Vista) is wireless but works absolutely fine (posting this off of her's)
I am running Zone Alarm, have done multiple scans with AVG, Ad Aware and Spybot with no improvement.
I've tried using open dns, and flushing my dns.
I've cleaned up my temp files and cache.
I should also mention, downloads are completely fine.
It's JUST the browser.
At one point I had two instances of rundll32.exe active at once, but only one seems to be running now.
In safe mode, guess what! Everything is dandy, so it must be program related, and I'm guessing a problem to do with something within Xp.
I saw on one forum someone reporting that there was an unknown process checked in msconfig and some dlls in the system32 directory with a similar name, upon deletion of them all, the problem was resolved, alas I cannot see anything like this.
After searching ALL over the internet and seeing many people with the same problem, I have found no resolution, someone please help me out!

My computer takes an extremely long time to boot up. I know I may have too many things opening at startup, but when I run msconfig I get an errorbox that says it cannot find the file.

Also it's not just slow on boot up but all the time. Takes forever to open applications and even when typing in word or any application, even techguys.org messages, there is a delay from when I type to when the text appears on the screen. Seems like every click results in an hourglass.

I have Win 2000 with a Pentium III processor. I have a 40 gig hard drive with just under 6 GB's free space.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Step 1
Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Clean.
Confirm each time with Ok.

It also messes up the wifi connection for the other devices around. My sibling will be using their laptop playing something like WoW and when I power up my tower the lag hits. From time to time it will drop my laptop's internet connection entirely. However, this is not the case recently.
The router we use is a linksys e2000.

Every now and then the pages load but they are slow and blocky. My dad says it is usually caused by a loss of packets but I did the packet test in cmd and only had a 1% loss. I am not tech savvy and my dad is not here to help so I have come here hoping someone has a solution.

Hey mate,

This tutorial is for Windows 7, but works for 8.x also: Internet Troubleshooting Guide - Windows 7 Help Forums

Also, go to the manufacturer's website of the device that connects to your computer (internet adapter), and see about installing the latest driver for your computer type. If you need help further, consider updating your system specs: System Information - View About your Windows 8 PC

It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer.

Please keep this computer offline except when downloading tools and posting in the forum until we get one installed. Let me know your intentions for an antivirus program.

Whenever I click on My Computer it takes at least couple of minutes to load, it is getting really annoying. I unistalled all the anti-virus software and most of the peripheral devices such as the printer and scanner but that had no effect. Everything else seems to be functioning relatively fine. Any suggestions? Besides taking my own life out of frustration...

A:"My Computer" windows takes FOREVER to load...

You need to post your system specs: and tell us what OS and service packs you are running.

Did this problem just start to happen? Have you recently installed any new software, like Norton AV 2005? Have you added any new hardware recently, especially a CD-ROM/DVD-ROM, HDD or Floppy?

Have you noticed any errors lately that were similar to this; "Managed MAPI Service Catastrophic Failure"?

After you click on "My Computer" and while it is still loading, try opening "Task manager" (Ctrl+Shift+Esacpe) and check the processes to see if any of them are taking an unusually large amount of CPU resources.
"System Idle Process" usually runs at around 95-99, so ignore that one, if anything else is that high post it here, or if you know what program it is, try uninstalling it.

Take all CD's out of the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives and then try opening "My Computer" dose it open any faster with no CD's in the drives?

Hi Guys,

Been a while since I have posted, thanks for your help in the past.

I have 5 problems at the moment:

- Computer is slow to startup.

- Windows defender keeps finding the same 2 problems: Adware: Win32/Cpmsky & Browser Modifier: Win32/Fotomoto - says it removes them but they come straight back.

- CA Antivirus has been detecting and removing 44 threats for the last 6 weeks or so.

- When I shut down my computer it invariably downloads and installs updates - I have checked this out and it is always the same update (which is always installed properly).

- Spybot S&D also acting up a bit by not immunizing my computer properly - ie: after clicking on Immunize it tells you how many items that you are not protected from, ie: 198, after updating I am still only protected against 74670 whilst the total reads 74861. A discrepancy of 191?

About two days ago, I noticed that my internet browser (Firefox) kept crashing. I reinstaled it and optimised its memory usage, but that didn't help. When I switched to IE, the same thing happened. I rebooted the computer, and this time none of the normal applications (Skype, MSN, McAfee 'active' icon) loaded correctly. The computer also seemed to be going a lot slower than usual.

I am using Windows XP, Home Edition (2002), SP2. I tried to update to SP3, but on restarting the System menu still tells me I'm running SP2.

I downloaded FreeXPpro to make sure that a memory leak wasn't to blame, and it indicates that at least half of my RAM is free most of the time.

Then, I downloaded ProcessExplorer to check to see if any of the system processes weren't what they should be (everything seemed fine).

I tried to run McAfee, but the scan went so slowy that about 7 hours later at 70% the computer locked up. It didn't find anything in that time.

Then I downloaded Clean40 to clean my temporary files.

Next I downloaded the latest version of a Malwarebytes. It crashed when I tried to update it, and went very slowly otherwise. I decided to run it in Safe Mode, and it discovered 9 registry keys were infected with WebDir and MiniBug.

However, on restarting my computer, the programs still won't load correctly on startup, windows update / Malwarebytes update doesn't work and I still get random crashes.
I'm really stuck and I don't know w... Read more

IE, Opera, FF Chrome, all have problems loading the same websites while other sites load right away.

Just for an example... racerxonline.com will not load on any browser, but only on one of my windows 7 pc. My second win7 and linux pc work fine using the same router and all three computers are hard wired to the router as I don't have or use WIFI.

Here are the steps I have taken to resolve the issue with no success over the last couple of days:

1 Deleted and reinstalled all browsers with no add ons.
2 ipconfig /release..... ipconfig /renew
3 I use ccleaner all the time
4 swapped ethernet cables with the two other computers
5 swapped ethernet ports on router that other two computers work fine with
6 checked all start up programs in start up folder and all basic nothing new or odd
7 ran full scan of malwarebytes, awdcleaner, avast, windows defender on and updated
8 said on occasion %&$#@ but that didn't work either

I have been using my Verizon Yahoo Browser for my internet use since my Internet Explorer browser has been giving me problems, namely it keeps freezing up after visiting anywhere between 3-5 web pages and I can't open multiple windows. It stops responding and I have to close out of it. I have scanned repeatedly for problems and haven't found any with it. I finally gave up and started using the Verizon Yahoo Browser and all was fine until yesterday. I couldn't open either internet browsers for about half a day, thought it was a problem with my internet connection, gave up and went to bed.

Today I can open both again but it takes a good couple minutes after clicking on them before they actually load. Once it loads, it runs ok although it has stopped responding a couple times and I have noticed I can not add any bookmarks in my Verizon Yahoo browser anymore. I have run numerous scans, including the Malwarebytes one, SuperAnti-Spyware, and my normal McAfee but it hasn't found anything. I did notice that about the time that this started, McAfee was trying to update itself and seemed to be frozen. I had to reboot computer. Could that have something to do with it? I'm thinking about reinstalling McAfee to see if it's doing something. Other than that, I would really appreciate any suggestions because this is getting frustrating.

Oh, and I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition.

A:Internet Browsers Take Forever To Open/can't Add Bookmarks

It is possible that McAfee could be the reason why you are experiencing this issue. You could uninstall, then reinstall McAfee to see if that solves the problem. If you decide to take this approach, after uninstalling from Add Remove, use the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool before reinstalling. The tool will (supposedly) remove any traces left behind. If a reinstall doesn't solve the problem, it could be a case of McAfee just not playing nice with your system. Of course, there are other reasons why your browsers are slow to open but since you mentioned McAfee I am addressing that question.

I am new to this site! Anyway, my computer is acting very slow whenever I'm online. When I type, there is a pause and I have to wait for the computer to catch up to me before I can go on....I have used the computer's built in Clean Disk, Defrag, and also cleaned Cookies and Internet Temporary Files both online and off. I have downloaded Adaware, and cleaned. My SpyBot hasn't worked for past year--it never finishes scanning, so you can't use it. Also, I have scanned for viruses using Mcaffees free AntiVirus software. I have picasa media as well, with perhaps about 7 Gigabytes of pictures/media, but would that really be a cuase? If non of the above then, what next!!??? Any help would be greatly appreciated
