Solved: Loading Saved Documents & folders from my XP Comp. to Windows 8.1 on New Comp

Q: Solved: Loading Saved Documents & folders from my XP Comp. to Windows 8.1 on New Comp

I loaded all my documents and folders from "My Documents" on my old computer (XP) and when I went to load them on my new system (8.1) only about 8 were included on the memory sticks. I used 2 sticks and assured that all the documents were loaded in full.
Any suggestions or ideas.
Thanks,
Ron

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:Solved: Windows Not Loading Up on Comp

Try to see if you get a blue screen error message you might have auto restart on system failure enabled.

Turn on your computer tap F8 about once every second.

You will get a menu. Go ahead and choose Safe Mode.

If you get into safe mode that is good

Go to start >control Panel> System> advanced > Startup and recovery> under System Failure uncheck automatically restart.

If not.

Turn off your computer
Turn on your computer tap F8 about once every second.
Choose Disable Restart on system failure.

Copy down the technical information if you get a blue screen error message.
Or any other error message you get.

If you don't get a error message after doing this please post back informing us that.

i turn on my computer it goes to the windows loading screen, after that it just goes black and restarts my hole computer.

i am unsure of how to fix this w/e can any 1 help please..

i would like to avoid formating my computer as i have lots of important files that i cannot get back.

A:Comp crashing after loading windows

Check all of your connections to ensure that everything is seated properly. If you have multiple sticks of RAM remove them all and try rebooting the system with one stick a time replacing each stick each time you reboot. If you are still having issues, and assuming you are using XP, then try inserting your XP disk and running a repair. Other than that, you can always slave that drive to a working computer and extract all of your data first and then reformatting your drive and installing a fresh install of windows.

good luck!

Whenever I turn on my laptop, it takes forever to load. Also, when I load it up, two processes pop up on the taskbar for a few seconds, and say something like "Loading..." or something similar. One of them, I believe, is mcplauncher.exe, which is some sort of Adobe Reader thing, but I have no idea what the other is, because it never says what they are.

Hi,

My mother board fried(or something) on my old computer so I purchased a new one. There were files on my old hard drive I need on my new computer so I attempted to install it on my new computer as a slave drive. Problems arose, most likely because they both have an OS, or some other unknown reason. I am a layman when it comes to computer so I couldn't figure out how to install it properly. I came to a temporary solution though, when I used the IDE cables from the CD-ROM drive in order to hook up my old hard drive. I am now able to access the information on my old hard drive on my new comp - EXCEPT for my old user name in the docs and settings folder. I imagine it's because I was the administrator of the computer, because I can access the other users desktop folder without a hitch on my old hard drive.

I just need to access the folders on the desktop on my old drive - it keeps telling me "access denied".

There are two potential ways I can do this, I guess.

A:Figure out how to boot my computer successfully with the old drive.

B: Since my new drive boots up with no problems, figure out how to access my old drives docs and settings folder when it's on the slave drive.

Does anyone have a solution for this? Any input on either A or B would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you.

A:Accessing documents and settings folder from an old HD on a new comp???

You need to Take Ownership of the folder. go to the link to read how.

A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard-Wired
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard-wired
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
Wi-fi
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

New, Shared Printer

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

Very weird issue - may take a lot of time to fix, and seeing as there is nothing on the machine, may be easier and more efficient to put a clean copy of Windows 7 on.

I just got a new comp, intel D865G motherboard, with 2.6Mhz, 800Mhz FSB with hyper threading. Anyways, on startup, between the Intel startup screen and the Win XP loading screen there's a black screen. For most computers, this part of the startup process doesn't take very long, but for my comp, it's takes a good 1 to 1.5 min I'd say, that seems pretty long to me. The funny thing is, the computer or the HD doesn't make any noise at this time.

Anybody else had this problem before? Could I have possibly misconnected or not connected something? (not likely though).

Hey guys,
I need some help here. My computer is shutting off everytime I try to load a video game, doesn't matter what game it is, it just shuts off. I have to wait a minute or so and reset the PSU to turn it back on. I am looking for insight on what I should do. I already ran the Windows memory diagnostic and everything came back fine.

Here is the set up:
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97

CPU: AMD FX 6200 Six Core Processor 3.3 GHZ

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 580 GDDR5 1536 MB

RAM: 4x4GB DDR3 1600 Kingston
(Should note, the auto setting mobo set the ram at 1333mhz, 1.5v, 9-9-9-24)

HD: SAMSUNG HD252HU ATA Device
(Note: This is one of two items being used from old comp)

PSU: RaidMax RX-630SS
(Note: This is one of two items being reused from old comp)

I say every game, but the only two games I have tried to load since building it are SWTOR and Neverwinter nights 2. Shuts down on both when loading.

I should also say I downloaded video drivers.

A:Comp shuts all the way down when loading games

We know you updated your video drivers but we want you to do the following:

1. Go to our Download section and click on Utilities and then download Driver Sweeper 3.1 to your desktop screen and install.

2. Download the latest diver(s) for your video card but don't install them.

3. Uninstall your video card drivers and reboot your PC into Safe Mode. Run Driver
Sweeper and remove ONLY the video card drivers. I had someone use it on their chipset drivers! If it doesn't find any video card drivers that is quite okay; just leave all other drivers alone.

4. Reboot and install new video card drivers.

Just happened out of the blue. The laptop starts loading up Vista, then gets hung up, gives a screen in Dos saying it cannot load Vista and gives me two options how to load it. Neither option works, so I reboot and I can only load a run it in Safe Mode, which is where I am now.Attached are the DDS and Gmer logs. I did have one issue while running DDS. It showed me a message box about and error with Visual Basic.I definitely need help on this! Thanks in advance.

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

I have a 32bit comp, W7 Ult, 1TB HD and I would like to clone that onto a comp that is a 64bit. HD is the same capacity, question is, can this process be done? Will the programs from the 32bit work in the 64bit comp.? I'm thinking of using Acronis True Image Home 2011.I was given a newer desktop minus the HD and was going to retire my old desktop and I wanted what was on the old comp(32bit) transfered to the new (64bit) tower. Thanx in advance for any advice.

A:Transferring Everything From 32bit comp To 64bit comp

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

Hi.
I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

Well this is my first post. I am a fledgling hobbyist at this computer thing and I got this lil comp from my friend for free. It was working great and I was really enjoying checking emails and listening to music on it while browsing the webernet. Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. There was also a suggestion to use hijakthis so this is the point I am at now. I want to send out a big THANK YOU to Rollin Rog for all the posts he makes on here. I always see posters post their problems, but not as many that share their solutions, so here is mine.

I have been stuck with a computer that unexplainably slowed down and turned into a pile of molassas last week. After a wonderfully useless chat session with Gateway, I tried all the troubleshooting tips that I could find (disk error checking, virus scan, disk defragmenter, hard drive utility scan, memory scan, ad scan, ms config startup changes, deleting temp files, etc. etc. etc.).

And THEN I found Rollin Rog's checklist.

For some reason, the current transfer mode setting changed to PIO. I uninstalled the driver and rebooted the system, and now WALLA!, everything is good. (I would be interested to see if anyone has an explaination as to why that happened?)

Thanks Rollin Rog for the time you put into this forum. This will be the first place I check in the future if I have any additional computer problems.

I have had this issue for several weeks now & there is very limited info about it on the net, and what I have found about it hasn't resolved the issue.

Basically my external hard drive & my flash drive appear as folder icons in My Computer & not drive icons.

I am guessing that the virus is on my laptop and then transfers itself to any external media I connect to it. Then if I put that same external media into a different PC/laptop, it transfers itself to that PC/laptop too...

Does any one have any ideas on this one?

Hello,

Thanks for being part of such a helpful community.

Around two weeks ago as I was shutting down my computer for the day, I had to install updates (standard so far). The next morning I came to find my computer stuck on the loading screen with that turning dot icon, and would not boot up.

I called Microsoft Tech support and the solution they came to was activating the PC Diagnosis settings by faking a failed reset and then using System Restore, which worked as a temporary solution.

However each time I shut down I was forced to install the same updates that caused the issue, and would have to use system restore again, etc...

Eventually it got to the point where I was assisted in re-installing windows 10 altogether.

This also worked for a while, but once again, I eventually had to install those dreadful updates....

Now I have the same issue AND system restore no longer works. Completely locked out of my computer.

Yesterday it miraculously loaded my login screen after hours. Today I wasn't so lucky, and it's been stuck on the loading screen all day. I have to use a random separate computer at work, away from all my files.

I'm desperate to solve this issue. Does anyone have any ideas? I do not currently have my files backed up and am quite concerned.

Please advise, greatly appreciated!

So I just finished putting together my first computer a couple days ago, and am trying to install XP Professional on it. Problem is, the other day I tried using my XP Home Edition for another computer, and couldn't find the authorization key, so I just removed the disk and turned off the computer. Now everytime I turn it on, my computer goes right back to the Home Edition install screen and gives me a 'fatal error' message. Even when I try to boot from the new disk it sends me back to this screen.

How can I get the old Windows off and the new one on? I tried going to the setup screen and pressing F9 to restore and the same problem happens.

Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???
