Directory access denied

Q: Directory access denied

Hi

I had Windows 2000 server in my PC. For one of the directories
(D:\Test) I had set
the password for access.
Recently I installed Windows XP (Windows 2K server is removed) .
Unfortunately I
didnt realise the passwod protection I set .
Now I am not able to access the directory D:\Test.
It gives error 'Access Denied.'
Is there any way I can access the files in this directory ?
I have very important files in this directory.
Can some one help me out.

Thanx

Prakash

Preferred Solution: Directory access denied

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On Windows7 Pro,  trying to run IIS.  The way I am used to execute is  on the browser "localhost".  I used to have the code in the directory  C:\inetpub\wwwroot.   Even before I copy,  I am hoping to see
the image IIS welcome page.  Once it is successful, want to copy the code as that was the way I used to do in Window XP.    However I am getting the following message.  I have administrator access to the machine and gave full permissions
to the folder  'C:\inetpub\wwwroot'.  Still the same message.
Error message 401.3: You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to Access Control Lists). Ask the Web server's administrator to give you access to 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot'.

Can someone help me to address this issue.  Thanks a lot in advance.

Well....I did an uninstall/reinstall today of Ultima Online....backed up my Desktop (containing profiles/macros for my characters) directory to my desktop of course, and after the install, slapped it back into the Ultima Online 2D directory and I got Access Denied all over the place when trying to browse the desktop directory that i pasted into the Ultima Online 2D directory.....and it's really annoying cause i have to go open each folder manually, Select All, then Right click, Set access to everyone, for EACH FOLDER and every file within each folder.....between 3-4 different "accounts" and different "servers" and 5 characters on each account, that's a lot of selecting, right clicking and setting to everyone access.....sooo....lol.

On another forum, a regedit trick was posted to access the CACLS.exe file from the right click context menu to set the files/directories to "Everyone" and I wanted to know if it is possible to use a wildcard *.* in the following regedit. Something, that I could just right click the Ultima Online 2D directory, and set access to everyone, and it would set everyone access throughout all directories and files throughout.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\Reset_Permissions_to_Everyone]
@="Reset Permissions to Everyone"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell\Reset_Permissions_to_Everyone\command]
@="cacls.exe \"%L\" /G Everyone:F"

A:Access Denied folder/directory?

Ok. i solved my own problem and yes, the wildcard works/ed

I used cacls.exe *.* /G EVERYONE:F and it worked. seems to be working fine. I just had to CD \Program Files\Ultima Online 2D\ from the C:\ prompt

Created a directory d:\Videos.

Shared it with Everyone with full read/write/change permissions.

Despite being totally open to the (home) network, I cannot access it.

I suspect this will always be the case with a new directory. How can I remove the padlock? I must have been able to do it before as there are no problems with directories which are already shared, but I don't recall having this difficulty when setting these up.

A:New Directory is Access Denied to Network

Have you tried going into the Security settings? When sharing drives you need to set up the standard permissions and also the security settings will need some adjusting.

I tried to acess a Directory (Application Data) and received a message "Application data not accessible. Access is denied" I checked the file attributes for this directory and found it to be "HSN". I noted several other directories with the same attributes and that I couldn't access any of them (including Documents, Desktop, Start-Menu, Templates). All other directories with attributes like N, SN or AN were accessible).

What does HSN mean and how do I change it so I can access these directories?

Thanks,

i was working on permissions, ownership, and auditing. i was wondering, a lot of files deny access regardless of whether
i assume ownership, or so for my group. are those denials logged somewhere so I can delve into the purpose of those files
and reason they are locked? too many to list from system files to individual program files.

changing these setting was tricky too because i belong to a group on the system, that i denied access, while granting myself access. i wound up with denied access. is there a way to fix this security loophole?

Following a hardware upgrade we reinstalled software and attempted to restore data from the old drive now housed in an external caddy. Everything was able to be accessed apart from payroll backups.

The backup payroll files, indeed all the files within the payroll directory can not be moved even using Windows Explorer...the error message "Access Denied Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use" keeps appearing. No other files on the drive seem to be affected.

Is there any way we can change the access rights to this directory? The software in question is Sage Payroll (current version).

Hello folks,

I know similar questions have been asked but I "might" have a unique one. What I have been trying to do is to copy the "C:\Users", "C:\Program Files", & "C:\Program Files (x86)" to another clean hard drive "D:\".

I'm doing this to make more room for the OS in the C: drive while date will be in the D: drive. Now I have successfully robocopy Program Files & Program Files (x86). I also have copied most of the Users directory but for this stubborn Real\update directory. This is I think the real player program. I get this Access Denied and "Error 5" error. I am in elevated command prompt. I achieved this via the Repair your computer prompt on the Windows install DVD.

I also have rmdir for Program Files & Program Files and have made a mklink for both of them so windows knows where they will be. But I have not did a full boot because I don't think windows will access my Users directory because they have been moved over to the new drive. What I can only do will have to be via the command prompt.

I can't make a mklink for Users because I get an error saying something about duplicate areas? What I was trying to do is go to this Real\update directory but even trying to access that directory via cd commands will not work, giving me a access denied. Again I am in elevated command prompt "Administrator:X:\windows\system32\cmd.exe How can I get to that directory. I just want... Read more

You probably just can't move your program files due to the possibility of config files and registry entries that are looking for your programs on the c drive since that's where they where installed. They should be reinstalled if you want to move them. Also if you move the profiles folder (under c:\user) it will break your profiles and you will need to change the location in the registry. I suggest that you put everything back and just move your personal files, music, pics, & videos on another drive. That should free up a lot of space.

Hi Iray007, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The Windows system folders Program Files, Program Files (x86), Windows and ProgramData are protected and by default the user cannot create / save anything inside them without taking the ownership of these folders or using the built-in administrator rights.

It is not recommend to use these protected system folders for saving program output or personal files. You should create and save your projects on some other location, for instance create a folder in your personal user folder for this purpose (C:\Users\Your_Username\MyProjects).

A:lsass.exe Access Denied a process has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights

Windows XP has reached end of life 2 years ago... It is an insecure Operating System and should no longer be used especially online.
The Dimension 2400 is weak hardware (Pentium 4 Processor, IDE hard drive, DDR RAM) from 2003! so 13 years old! Its not worthwhile running a modern Operating System on it and below minimum system requirements.
If on a budget you are best to buy a second hand OptiPlex 780 with a Windows 7 OEM license (which can be used for a free Windows 10 upgrade).

Since installing Windows 8, I have been having sporadic problems with access denied. Examples follow:

PIMEX is a Personal Information Manager that I have been using through several generations of Windows. When I first converted to Windows 8, this program worked with no problems. Now, however, when I try to open the program, I get the message "PIMEX database could not be opened. Error message: permission denied". If I use the Control Panel to uninstall the program, and then reinstall the program, I am able to open it normally and work with it and use all functions. Once I close the program, however, and try to open it again, I once again get permission denied.

PaperPort is a program that manages scanned images. The program can scan either photos or text documents. If text is selected, the program creates a PDF file that the user names. These scanned files are then stored in PaperPort folders. When I try to display one of these files, PaperPort invokes PDF Viewer Plus (included with the package), and I get the message access denied. If I try to use the Windows 8 Reader to display the file, I get a "Sorry, can't display this file message". Likewise, I cannot display the file using Adobe software.

I have a HP Photosmart Premium printer which also is a scanner. If I use the HP Solution Center to scan a text document, I am able to scan the file without problems, but when I try to Finish and write the file to my hard drive, I have the same permissions problem ... Read more

Good morning,I have a system that has had numerous issues, mainly virus related. I have cleaned the system, and show no virus activity... but I'm still having issues.Late last week the system was stuck in a loop, it wouldn't boot to Windows at all (no safe mode, no normal mode). I resorted to a Windows repair from the install disk. It worked... to a certain degree. I am now able to get into Windows, but can not open IE and I can not install a display driver.I am unable to access Windows Update, but was able to set automatic updates to install lots of updates including SP3, but I am still unable to make any changes.Initially when I attempted to open IE I would get a window saying that IE had to close instantly. I attempted to reinstall IE, and I attempted to install a newer version of IE. Neither worked. If I chose to install the updates with the install I would get an access denied error, if I chose not to install the updates with the install it would look like it worked, but now when I click on IE I get "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\inetcpl.cpl. The operating system cannot run %1"In device manager, I have no drivers installed on my display adapter. If I try to update it, it looks like it's going to install... but then I get "Cannot install the hardware. Access is Denied".Any assistance or insight into this would be appreciated.

On any system with a number of issues...it's often better to do a clean install to wipe the slate clean, rather than hope that you have patched all known and unknown issues, IMO.

Well it wouldn't renew my subscription so I read on a website that you need to clear norton out of your registry. The following error was encountered:

Access control configuration prevents this request.

On top of that I get a similar message when I try to run live update. I have the computer hooked up to a linksys router with high speed internet. Please help.

Hmm, that's a good one. Try reinstalling IE or Firefox, whatever internet software you use. You might have inadvertently deleted an application cache file which the application needs.

Only other thing to do is boot into safe mode and select last know good boot.

I have kinda setup a network with my computer and a laptop which has just been formatted. It now has XP service pack 2 installed and I have to enter the password and username of an account on the laptop in order to access the resources.
Now I can access the laptop using my computer, when the laptop tries to access my computer, and tries to get a file, the message on the title always comes up.

I have unchecked simple file sharing and enabled full access (read/write) on the laptop whose account Im using. But it didnt work.

When opening my computer today, I have noticed a message about migration and program controls and some information about windows NT and windows 3.x This has never popped up and am wondering if this has made any changes to my computer not the laptop.

So Is there a simple way that does not restrict the laptop from getting the resources on my computer??

Hello I am unable to access my task manager on Windows 7 as administrator. Whenever I try to access it a Command window flashes on the screen quickly and that's it. Same thing happens when taskmgr.exe is clicked.

I was able to capture the command window error as the following:

C;\Users\Brian\Documents>REG and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System  /v  DisableTaskMgr  /t  REG_DWORD  /d  /0  /f
ERROR: Access is denied.

Any help with this would be appreciated. I have checked that TaskMgr is enabled in the registry, and have ran AVG, Malwarebytes, TDSS Killer, RKill and Combofix and they didn't come up with anything.

A:Denied Access To Set Program Access And Defaults By Rundll32.exe

Hi and welcome.rundll32.exe is a process which executes DLL's and places their libraries into the memory, so they can be used more efficiently by applications. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.Note: rundll32.exe is a process registered as a backdoor vulnerability which may be installed for malicious purposes by an attacker allowing access to your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. This process is a security risk and should be removed from your system. This is strange, this might be a malware or it might just be some promblem with the rundll32.exeI would run a scan and see what the scanners find. DON'T remove rundll32.exe, because it is most likely a legitimate file.Regards,ExtremeboyGreat that you figured it out. Can you tell us how you fixed the promblem?

Hi, everyone,

I'm mostly a Linux guy these days, so I'm no longer clued up about even simple Windows issues. Bear with me.

I have one PC running Vista (home basic), one running XP (professional) and one running Windows 7 (home basic). There is a printer connected to the Vista box, which is shared.

On the XP box I can both see and use the printer on the Vista box (i.e. a "net view \\vistabox" shows the printer, and under "printers and faxes" I can install and use it).

On the Windows 7 box, however, I can see the Vista box (i.e. a "net view" shows it in the list of available PCs on the network) but a "net view \\vistabox" gives me an "access denied" error.

The Windows 7 machine has a password on it, the Vista and XP machines don't. All machines are on the same workgroup name (which is "WORKGROUP"). On the XP box I don't need a password to access the shared printer on the Vista machine; it just works.

Extensive Googling has failed to render enlightenment, nor has browsing this forum. I'm sure it has something to do with security and passwords, somewhere, somehow, but I have no idea in which direction to look for it, let alone fix it. I have also read some things about workgroups and homegroups not being the same in Windows 7, but I'm not sure if this is correct (and if so, relevant).

All suggestions on where to go from here would be greatly appreciated!

I was upset that I couldn't save to my C drive so I started messing around trying to find a way. I deleted everythig in group or users names thinking I could just assign the Administrator. Now I can't access anything, I cannot run a system restore, I cannot do a cmd to Run as administrator, so on and so on. I have googled my eyes off trying to find solutions. When I click to run some programs I get "The parameter is incorrect".

A:Can't open access control editor. Access Denied.

Try safemode.

Tap F8 on boot. try a system restore from there

And yet quite possibly another no brainer for you all, I work on a large number of machines for family and friends, mostly 2000 or XP Home and Pro and to be quite honest with you I am not sure what the best way to connect to these machines would be, what I mean is I am soooooo tired of setting up a machine in my shop, running up stairs to my primary machine to either get in remotly or tap into the c:\ drive of the other machine only to realize that I do not have permition, or I do not remember the computer name, or I do not have the password, or I can not log on as the "guest". Do you know what I mean? I get so frustrated when I get the "Access Denied" message. it seems to me I spend more time trying to get into these machines than I do reparing them. So I guess my question would be, once I have the machine setup what is the FASTEST way for me to gain access to that machine from another machine? Lets just focus on XP and 2000, Do I really have to setup a user first to gain access? or is there a quicker way. Thanks.

The reply did not work so I will try to start a question instead:

Question: You wrote:

In short:

My permissions were all fine, so if anyone has trouble resolving the issue after sorting permissions then make sure you try fully disabling your anti-virus / anti-spyware / firewall applications, because that was the cause for me.

In detail:

Problem:
-----
Failed to install this application
- http://www.ssware.com/cryptoobfuscator/download.htm
- on Windows 8.1 x64
- Get error message "Unable To Execute Files In The Temporary Directory. Setup Aborted. Error 5: Access Is Denied."

First Candidate Solution
----
The issue turns out to NOT be security rights on the Temp folder

ESET Smart Security HIPS Advanced Memory Scanner is the cause

Instead, I went and turned off all the ESS protections one by one and it turned out to be HIPS that is causing this false positive.
In fact, it is the Advanced Memory Scanner option under HIPS that is causing the error, while the application in question is legit (using Inno Setup and presumably trying to write to the user temp folder, not sure whether just logs or to execute from there)

Furthermore, Smart Security logs have no entries under HIPS even though I ticked "Log all blocked operations" under the HIPS "Advanced setup" -... Read more

Hello,

I had to rebuild my PC a week or so ago and now cannot access a website that I have always been able to access before.

I keep getting a message saying "Forbidden. Access denied by access control list" but there is absolutely nothing within my access control list restricting this site.

I then went in and added the URL as an allowable site within the access control list thinking that might help and I'm still forbidden from accessing the site.

I've cleaned out my cache and ran Ad-aware to see if that would help and still nothing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks very much.

A:Access denied by access control list.

Do you have a firewall running, the ACL within the firewall might have the URL listed.

My computer has been battling with my graphics card & modem lately. So, today I reinstalled Windows with the backup feature provided with the backup (emachine). After I had updated windows completely & replaced my extensive collection of fonts I went to put all my personal files back. I get this message:
"FOLDER LOCATION" is not accessible.
Access is denied.Click to expand...

It's the "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner" folder

It has all my music, videos, photos, & work for things I do in it. I can get into my 'WINDOWS' folder and 'Program Files' but not that. Is there a way I can get into it? I've tried using Ubuntu with the hard-drive mounted and I get that the HD is read-only and I can't move/rename/delete/ect. anything on it. I've been working on it for hours with no results at all, help

I have installed the BT home hub (British Telecom) There are two user accounts on my pc. I am the administrator, and have no problems using the connection to the hub (either wirelessly or by cable) at all!

I do however, have a problem with any other user been able to connect to the internet. I have tried making them and "Administrator" too, and I get the same error message:

Forbidden

You were denied access because;
Access denied by access control list.

My reasoning told me that it might be a software problem, as a dial up connection, and a standard broadband cable connection all worked peviously with the two "Adimistrator", and "restricted" user accounts.

I spoke to BT who decided that it was a microsoft issue...microsoft UK want to charge me ?49 to help as my XP Home Edition wasn't bought from them, it was pre-installed. I contacted Time Computers for help from them, though I am utterly dissapointed in them...I am a novice computer user, but I recognised that my ?1 per minute technical help call was ludicrous...DON'T USE IT! They spend 5 mins getting and checking your details!

1, Since when has creating a shortcut to a connection ever "lifted" an access denied?

2, I was also told to delete the accounts that were not allowed the access. They told me to click on save files, after I had started to delete the account...they got mixed up with the order of how things are done! Luckily I got it halted!

I have tried other directories (such as cd lexmark, etc.) and they work fine, but for some reason "my music" just will not work! Please help me figure out what I am doing wrong! Thanks

I have had some problems with booting an XP PC, so I put the hard drive into a W2K PC as a second drive, so that I could backup some files.

Initially, I couldn't access certain directories, until I went to the Security tab in the directory properties and added myself to the list and Allowed inheritable permissions.

This was a bit of guesswork as none of my directories in W2K have a Security tab in Properties.

Can anyone explain this Security tab or suggest any links?

A:Directory access

The security tab is only available if the file system is NTFS.
