Solved: After Windows Update, no NIC driver

Q: Solved: After Windows Update, no NIC driver

I have a client whose PC I have not had a chance to look at yet. Her issue is as follows...

A week or 2 ago, her PC auto-downloaded the Windows XP updates, and afterwards she was not able to get on the internet from that PC, but confirmed the internet connection was good (XBOX was able to connect). After rebooting, she went to network connections - no LAN connection present. She called Gateway (mfg of PC) who stated they are aware of the Windows XP updates corrupting the NIC drivers and have had "thousands of reports" similar to hers. They emailed her a link to the new NIC driver and advised her to reinstall it. She downloaded it (from work), put on USB stick, brought home, installed w/ no success...still no LAN connection in control panel. As far as I know, she has not re-contacted Gateway. She ran Windows restore back to a date she knew the Internet worked, no sussess, same symptoms. One idea which I haven't had her try yet is to try and ping 127.0.0.1 to verify NIC. I am going to her house to assist tonight and am looking for any input. I did some google searches and was unable to find anything from Microsoft or Gateway. I'm thinking if I can't get her current NIC working, I might just buy her a new one. Has anyone heard of this issue? Any ideas to repair?

Thanks
-Ray

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello CaryguyThanks for using the Lenovo forums.Try to uninstall the driver, and the let the computer try to find it.

Click Start, type Device Manager, and press Enter.
Find and double-click the category of driver you want to uninstall
Right-click the device, and click Uninstall.
Windows will prompt you to confirm the device?s removal. Click OK to remove the driver.
After the uninstallation is complete, reboot your computer as soon as possible.

I performed a Windows Update Scan and it came up with:

Motorola network software update released on February 09 2004.

How do I know that I need this particular driver? I would hate to download this and find out it screws up my computer. I was told my by Dell rep to be careful of what I download that shows up in Windows Update.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 2500 laptop / Windows XP-Home.

Thank you.

I have Windows Update set up to automatically check for updates each day. Two days ago it found that "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Bluetooth Controller - CSR Bluetooth Chip" needed updating so I accepted this and it came back that it was install successfully.
Yesterday the same thing happened and again I accepted it and it was successfully installed. Guess what, today Windows Update still says "Realtek Semiconductor Corp. - Bluetooth Controller - CSR Bluetooth Chip" needs updating.
When I check in the Device Manager the driver is dated 24/6/2010 version 6.2.71.214 so it has not been updated. If I click "Update Driver" it searches, downloads and installs an updated driver (so it says) but it has not, the date is still 24/6/2010.
Has anyone any suggestions why this is happening and how I can make the new driver install correctly.

A:[SOLVED] Windows Update keeps updating same driver. Why.

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

Hide the update in Windows Updates, then go to the manufacturer's website of your computer and download the driver from there.

When clicking "Search for update" in Device Manager, all it does is use Windows Update.

I have Power Suite on my computer and it said I had 6 outdated drivers which I updated. Now my Windows won't load. It gets to my desk top background, but can't even load the program icons. Then it starts the same process all over. I'm sure one of the updated drivers is the issue, but I can't get the computer to start in order to try System Restore. What can I do? I'm not very computer savvy, so go slow..

Thanks!

A:[SOLVED] windows won't load after driver update- xp

This is the reason it is best to get the driver from the manufacturer website. Most Driver Finder software will recommend incompatible drivers.

I see no beneficial reasons to using Power Suite software.

Boot the PC into Safe Mode. Once logged in run a System Restore

Restart the PC > repeatedly tap F8 during boot > at the Advanced Options choose Safe Mode

Hi, and thanks in advance...

Much of this is a repeat to other threads, until the graphic driver problem at the end...

(I also have an Ubuntu partition.)

I'd left my mp3 player plugged in overnight + an Asus Xonar DAC in a usb hub, when Windows wanted to do an update and conflict over drivers ensued. Strange, because I've selected for notification before updating. Also, have not been successful installing any new updates since the end of May. Was seemingly a common problem, I checked into it, too busy/lazy to pursue and succeed. This part is confusing...?

Woke up to blasting fans and unplugged everything peripheral. First, tried setting back to restore points prior to that night - twice. Could restart in Safe Mode and with networking. Then, could restart normally - but, shutdowns after 20 minutes or so.

Got crash logs, saw driver conflicts (not found) - saved.

Came here, read threads, did restart at Last Known Good Configuration. Restart - Nvidia Geforce driver not found. Went to Asus site, downloaded and installed driver (not lastest version, but last approved version and not much later than one that was installed).

It then went into a system cycled start/restart/etc. attempting to find driver, fix itself - forced to do shutdown to stop it.

Restarted this morning in Safe Mode, followed your instructions for posting. It's been running in safe mode for about 20 minutes now.

Hi,
I'm a little confused by one of my update options. I was under the impression that windows 7 was using wddm 1.1, and that the wddm 1.0 drivers have been available for quite some time. I checked and the driver I have is wddm 1.0, released 10/28/2008, version number 8.15.10.1590. So why am I being given the option to update to 'pre-release wddm 1.0'? I tried to get more information to check the version number, but I am just redirected to Winqual Help , which doesn't help me any.

I'd like to test out the wddm 1.1 drivers, and I've read that they're available for 7, but I don't think that these are those drivers, unless there is a typo in the driver title.

yes thats right....

wddm is just a driver model...
its up to the manufacture (here intel) to release wddm 1.1 driver
so until then (most likely they wont) they have to release a wddm 1.1

Windows Display Driver Model - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
that should be a good read....

what they mean pre-release means that these drivers are beta drivers (there is a difference between pre-release drivers and pre-release wddm 1.1 drivers)

I, again, apologize for double posting. I figure I should include the host of other issues I'm having. Maybe they can all be inter related.

-my DVD/RW drive, when connected to mother board in ANY SATA slot, causes the BIOS screen to freeze forever. I have disconnected the drive at this time while trouble shooting. I have tried known-good SATA cables so I know it's either the DVD/RW drive or perhaps a driver or mobo failure.

-I have run the memory diagnostic tool in windows. No issues were reported.

-I have NOT run memtest86 because I do not have a disk drive connected.

-I have had stop-errors (BSODS) such as PFN_list_corrupt, System_service_Exception, Memory_management, IRQ_not_less_or_Equal
All of these could be a result of bad RAM.

I have purchased new RAM as a means to fix my problems. It seemed to work for 2 weeks, then the stop errors returned.

I have a P51 20HH and it refuses to update to Windows 10 1903 due to a complaint of an old version of the Intel RST driver.  I tried following all the instructions to update the driver at both the Intel site, and the official RST driver here on the Lenovo site for P51 downloads.  None actually did anything.  They appeared to work, but actually didn't do anything because the driver update software didn't see any hardware to update.  I turned on debug output on the driver update script and it basically said nothing was applied since there was nothing to do. In my case with the P51 20HH, the driver files are all there but there is zero evidence (Device Manger, etc) that any of them are in use.  I don't have Optane, RAID, etc.  Microsoft update sees the driver as an old version so it won't do the Windows update.  Meanwhile, the Intel driver install packages don't see the driver as usable, so it won't apply the update!  It is a lock out.  So, my solution for the P51 20HH was to rename C:\Windows\System32\drivers\iaStorA.sys to something else.   Proceed with caution with this solution, because if your machine is really using RST, this could cause your storage to become inaccessable, which might put you in a bad boot loop and require a BIOS boot to recovery media.  You should absolutely verify that Device Manager (Storage controllers) does not list anything Intel.  Renaming the driver requires admin priv... Windows Update is not telling me I need or can update my Wireless networking, but Intel's Update Driver Utility says I should and is offering the update. How would you recommend I proceed?

A:Should I trust Intel's Driver Update utility or Windows Update?

G'day Rolo,

The difference between the two drivers is that the Windows one is digital signed/tested by Microsoft. I would say that unless the Intel one delivers more benefit than the Windows one, and everything works as expected, then there is no need to update.

You often see this with graphics card drivers too, for example.

Recently Windows updated my Intel HD Graphics 630 driver. A few days later the same driver was released on Dell's driver support page.
Is there any correlation between Windows Update and Dell's drivers? Who does update the drivers Microsoft themselves or Dell needs to release the driver to Microsoft?
As this is the first time when Windows updated the driver is this how the Intel HD Graphics drivers are to be kept up-to-date via Windows Update?

A:Windows Update vs Dell Update - Intel HD Graphics 530/630 Driver

ZINGAM,
Referring to the Intel HD graphics driver.
Windows gets code from Intel for the driver and they will implement it in the OS. Dell also gets code from Intel and will release it. Also, Intel will post the driver on their site to download. You can uninstall the Microsoft driver if you choose and install the Dell update driver.

On Windows 10 Pro, Version 1511, Build 10586, I've hidden troublesome Nvidia driver updates, using the wushowhide troubleshooter package for Windows 10.

Even with the updates hidden, the next time an update check/cycle is triggered, the Nvidia driver updates are detected and installed. Upon rebooting normally after the driver updates are installed, I see a Windows STOP error (blue screen of death) shortly after signing on Windows.

I can remove the driver updates by uninstalling the associated applications/packages through the Programs and Features control panel. I've also tried to first remove the display adapter in Device Manager, selecting the option to Delete the driver software for this device then removing the associated applications/packages in Programs and Features. As long as I do this before rebooting (after the driver updates are installed), I don't see STOP errors and I can then install an older Nvidia driver that works without STOP errors. If the driver update happens to slip in unnoticed, I can reboot in Safe Mode, sign on and proceed with driver application/package removal, then reboot normally.

The latest (but older) Nvidia driver published by Dell for this laptop apparently works fine (no STOP errors):

But the latest "compatible" Nvidia driver from Windows Update produces frustrating STOP errors, resulting in a largely unusable system:

I've also tried this method to blocking/hiding the Nvidia driver updates, but the result is the same: W... Read more

A:Can't hide NVIDIA driver update in Windows Update

I'm cautiously optimistic I found a reasonable workaround (requires the Pro edition of Windows), by using AppLocker to disallow executables signed by Nvidia to run. This way I can leave the Windows Update service enabled and don't need to constantly fight the Nvidia driver updates that I supposedly "hid" using the wushowhide troubleshooter. For anyone else in this or a similar predicament:

Right-click the Start button and click Run, or use the + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command dialog.

In the Open text box, type gpedit and click OK.

Expand Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker > Executable Rules. Right-click in the pane on the right and click Create New Rule... In my case, I created a Publisher rule with action Deny for Everyone, and used an Nvidia driver installer file as the reference file to capture the Publisher information.

Create exceptions as necessary. Since I want the older (already installed) Nvidia driver of my choice to function, I created a wildcard Path exception for the Nvidia Program Files folder.

Hope this is helpful...

Ok, since my laptop is currently non-functioning and being fixed by a relative, I've been using this old Gateway desktop. I went to launch Minecraft since I've been really wanting to play it, and as expected got a video card error. It doesn't surprise me in the least this can't handle it, but I figured I'd ask about how to update or install a driver since it hasn't ever really had that done.
Main Driver: vga.dll
Version: 5.01.2600.0000 (English)
Date: 8/4/2004 07:00:00
WHQL Logo'd: Yes
Mini VGD: vga.sys
VDD: unknown
DDI version: unknown.
Well, my understanding is since it's using vga.dll as the graphics driver means that it's never actually had a specific one for the comp installed, thus using a default. I'd like to get one so that it'll run a bit better, it actually is kinda slow now that I think of it. I've searched before for this model on Gateway's site, and came up empty handed. Just would like some help to find an appropriate driver, please?

Hey everyone,

I found this driver update on MajorGeeks (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4404.html) and I can't tell if it worked or not

If I go into Device Manager the driver version says 5.621.304.2005, which makes me think it didn't work because the driver version is supposed to 6.21 not 5.621. However, I may just be reading the version number wrong. I notice that it says 2005 and the driver date is 3/4/2005 which seems recent.

So, did it work? And if it did, how are you supposed to read those driver version numbers? What does each number signify, if you know what I mean?

Thanks for the help.

On my home XP, under System Info, when I look at the Modem info, says "Driver: Unknown". I have been having problems with that viral ISP...AOL, with constant disconnects and all that wonderful junk that AOL HELL throws at one. Using their AUTO-MESs (not auto-fix, for sure)...said my modem was not the greatest one for them...all of a sudden snubbing my poor modem, which until now has just fit right into their little club. I have an "Conesant HCF V90 56k DataFax PCI Modem, Current driver version 2171.25.0.

Do I/should I do anything regarding this modem situation, with the unknown driver. It has a Device ID# under Signed Drivers, but says Driver Name: Unavailable.

Advice, if you will....pleeeeeease???? Much appreciated...have to be able to use AOL to get a new ISP and get rid of AOL!!

Thanx again!! Happy Friday!

A:Solved: Graphics driver Update

This is not actually a graphics driver.
Many motherboards now use software that basically uses SCSI emulation
for hard drive controllers to help increase data transfer rates from the hard drive.
This appears to be the same.
If your system is compatable with it,it can offer some small improvement.
It won't hurt to run without it.

A:Solved: video driver update for xp?

That computer is too old and too slow to expect it to play quality videos.

Updating the driver for its S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR graphics device isn't going to resolve the issue.

The last Windows XP driver for it was released in February 2005 and appears to be version 6.14.10.33

My Asus Z84J has the Asus provided wireless LAN card and prescribed driver installed.

The Intel check for a driver update provides one that they call "generic." It is an update of the very one that Asus installed. There is no updated driver listed at the Asus site.

Should I leave the Asus driver in place or allow the Intel update to replace it?

Thanks, {redoak}

A:Solved: Driver update question

Hiya redoak!!!

Well, my question to you would be, is the wireless LAN Card NOT functioning now? Is there a feature that you would like to enable with an UPDATED driver that you would need this?

Usually, I recommend shying away from 'upgrading' drivers if the hardware is functioning properly. If it ain't broke....

I'd suggest something like Secunia PSI to check to see if all of your SOFTWARE is updated as security flaws in software are where viruses are designed to exploit.

my 2 cents!

One of my clients said they updated their usb drivers on a dell dimension 5100 and after a reboot both the keyboard and mouse do not work once windows loads.

This machine has no ps/2 ports so its usb only. The keyboard does work in the bios and before windows loads. I have tried to reset/update the bios, as well as start in safemode. Both enhanced and safe mode yeild the same result.

Finally, I have already scanned the HD for viruses/spyware in another machine, which only found one spyware that wasn't critical, and after reconnecting the drive to the 5100 there was no change.

Any suggestions? Thanks

Hello all,
So i recently flew to austria and am now using a very old pc. I'm attempting to play a game called toribash and it boots up and the menu doesn't show up, so turns out i need a driver update. Here is the dxdiag for my graphics card, i haven't been able to find any drivers newer than late 2003 for it. It may be impossible to find newer ones but i thought maybe one of you would know where to get some. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

A:[SOLVED! Windows Update BUG!] Windows Update Failure [7SP1 x64] KB4074598 [HRESULT = 0x80004005 - E_FAIL]

Solved, 2 months later! After 3 dist upgrades!
So I finally solved this Windows / Update BUG, it and it was as simple as this; set peerdissvc (under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\) (aka branchcache as it is known under services.msc) from disabled back to manual, along with its
dependency http, to manual. I'm quite sure setting branchcache to manual was all that was necessary for the fix to take place; I also had set "not configured" to alll changes I had made to "Background Intelligence Transfer Service" under
group policy regarding peer caching. I had tried the latter before the last 3 distupgrades and it did not make any difference; so it seems windows update fails if you disable branchcache, which is typically only used by businesses anyway, so many people recommend
to disable it, for security reasons also. What a headache; I spent at least a 80 hours, and weeks, and months trying to figure this one out; Windows update has turned into a bunch of bull***** with their ROLLUPS; one error on one of 130 little updates and
the whole shebang goes down with the ship; dumbest idea ever for their update platform; they should change to individual updates and do it quick.

This is a MICROSOFT WINDOWS UPDATE BUG. You shouldn't have to enable or disable any built in windows service to get a "windows" update working. What a headache.
SO for all of you 80004005 victims out there; check your C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log; searc... Read more

Hi, I just installed ATI catalyst 9.12 and as i was resetting my desktop and my comp restarted. now it reboots over and over before loading the windows screen. I got in a few times, but it got worse - but it now reboots as it starts to show the logo screen.
I popped in my windows cd and tried repair but it woudn't let me, and I would prefer not to revert back to when I was smart enough to back things up, it was too long ago lol
I've cleaned it out, checked all the cables, I'm watching the temps now, no problems - running BIOS no problem lol I'm so confused can anyone help?

Is there anything I can do?

I have a Dell E6520 laptop running Win 7/Pro SP1 64 bit with 8 GB RAM, i5 processor.

In the "optional" Windows updates list are several driver updates (printer, network, graphics). In the past (some time ago, and not on this computer), when I tried to install a driver update using Windows update, the result was a disaster. Ever since, I have refused to update any drivers - perhaps I am too paranoid. I searched this forum and found this thread:

If all the devices in the computer are working properly, there's no compelling reason to update their drivers."
OK, is there general agreement by those contributing to this forum to not update drivers? If there is no "compelling reason" to update drivers, what is the primary reason driver updates are released? How risky are 3rd party driver/app update applications such as the Secunia Personal Software Inspector (yes, I realize this app covers more than drivers)?

FWIW: "At BleepingComputer.com, we are big fans of Secunia PSI."

I am just completing a clean installation of Windows 7 Professional to replace a Windows XP operating system. There are a couple drivers missing now that I am done and a couple probably should be updated. It seems that the only way I can get new drivers are to sign up and pay for a driver update service -- Driver Tuner, Driver Max, etc. I have reconciled myself to the fact I will probably have to pay for one of these to get the drivers I want, but is there any difference in them. What are our readers recommendation as to whether any of them is better and more reliable than the others, or are there some that are a waste of money. I will appreciate feedback.

As you see from my computer specs at the bottom of this message, I have an XP-SP3 desktop with an Intel mobo. I want to check for hardware updates, but the ActiveX file that has to be installed before the update utility that scans your computer can work. . . fails to install. I have disabled my Avast! AV and pop-up blockers. I have turned the Windows firewall off. I have tried it with my default browser, Firefox, and with IE. I have tried installing it in Safe Mode. It will not install.

Why?

Hi and thanks to anyone kind enough to take time to help me. I have a gigabyte 990fxa-ud5 and I installed the chipset driver from the mobo cd it's realtek pcie gbe family controller. I've been trying to update it with the only chipset driver I can find for this board from the gigabyte website. It won't update and I've tried everything. Cpu z shows amd north and southbridge. I tried running the driver, going into device manager and it says realtek pcie etc..... is the best driver. I'm new to chipsets and embarrased to say I'm learning but really behind in builds and oc'ing. I'm used to nvidia chipsets. Download from nvidia untick firewall and install. I'm not even sure if the chipset drivers go with network adapter but my device manager shows no chipset or anything amd. I'm lost. The realtek driver is what installed from install cd as chipset driver. I've been looking around all day to fix this myself. It's embarassing to ask things that should be simple to fix. Thanks again.
