[SOLVED] Windows Fingerprint Login Has Stopped Working

Q: [SOLVED] Windows Fingerprint Login Has Stopped Working

I am running Windows 8.1 that is up to date with maintenance, etc. Windows fingerprint login was working fine until a few days ago when it stopped working. I have done extensive research online to no avail. I have restored my system to a point in time (3/15/2015 via a system image restore) when fingerprint login was working and still have the problem. My system is

Product name:HP ENVY TS 17 Notebook PC
Product number:E1P13AV
Serial number:5CG3487Y00
BIOS (Configuration):F.65-11/20/2014 (097F110000405E00000620000)
Keyboard revision:KBC Version 93.52
Total memory:8.00 GB
Processor name:Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz

Can someone please help get this thing going again? I'm completely out of guesses!

Thanks ...

Have seen several posts but no solutions. After a windows 10 update a couple of months ago, the fingerprint scanner stopped working. It recognises me but then says "your credentials could not be confirmed".
Microsoft have sent endless messages blaming the driver, the scanner etc etc. Finally they say it is an issue with the update, but they have not solution at this time. Good old Microsoft and their helpful updates, which you cannot avoid.
Anyone have the same problem and how did you fix it??

Hello. . .
I use the fingerprint reader to login to my Latitude E5550 every time.  However, I was unable to do so after the latest Windows 10 update (version 1607).

It did still show in the Windows Device Manager (i.e., no "Unknown Device" listed)
I went into the DDP Console to try to register a new fingerprint (for troubleshooting), but it wasn't reading the swipes
I attempted to update to the latest firmware/drivers, but that only caused unknown devices to show up in the Device Manager (ControlVault Firmware v3.3.15.0 and ControlVault Drivers v3.3.14.68)
Switched back to the older driver (v3.0.48.26) and all devices were once again recognized

Any suggestions for how to get around this?  It's not the end of the world, but I *really* like using the fingerprint reader (I paid extra for) to login.  If I can provide additional helpful information, please let me know.

Dear all, I've just received my P50 (20EQS00600, M1000M, i7-6700HQ, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD) about a week ago, and I quite like it. However, there is one thing that is driving me nuts: after I upgraded from Win 7 Pro 64 bit to Win 10 Pro, the fingerprint functionality stopped working. This issue seems to be related to the ones reported in these two threads for the P70 but at the same time appears sufficiently different to warrant a new post: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/P70-fingerprint-software-issue/m-p/22517...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/Fingerprint-and-Sound-problems-P70/td-p/... So, here's what I did:1) I clean-installed Win 10 w/o retaining any data/settings from the previous Win 7 installation; I even reformatted the SSD.2) Upon initial installation I was asked by Windows Hello to enroll fingerprints which I did.3) Fingerprint worked on the first login but then magically vanished. Windows Hello is no longer showing up as a login option in the Win control panel.4) I discovered in Device Manager that the Synaptics WBDI reports the following problem: 'This device cannot start. (Code 10)'.5) Repeated uninstall and reinstall of the drivers are to no avail. I tried both having Win look up a driver and manual installation of the drivers I downloaded from the Lenovo page.6) When I uninstalled the drivers and then wiped the stored fingerprints in BIOS, I was again able to enroll fingerprints with Windows... Same problem on my W550s under essentially the same circumstances.  Unfortunately Lenovo is taking the tack that FP problems on new machines are the fault of the software not the hardware so they will not warranty the bad FP sensor. I had 3 FP sensors in my W520 over the 3 years of its warranty as they are far from foolproof devices.  But now that Win 10 has taken over the software side of the usage, Lenovo has apparently decided they will save some service calls by not warranting the FP sensor and blaming the problem on software which they don't warranty. Good luck.  If you do find a solution, I will be listening closely.

Hello Sevenforums people,

My laptop recently got the "Windows Explorer has stopped working." error after logging in.
I rebooted my laptop one day and after logging in this popped up.

No background, task bar, icons etc. Safe mode doesn't work.
My laptop tried restoring itself to a point in time when it wasn't corrupt which also failed.
The error report says Shell32 is the faulting module. (I've had problems with Shell32 before on another computer, but on that pc I could acces internet and such.

Any help would be greatly appreciated since I do not want to wait 2 month for Dell to reply to me with an evading answer.

It's a Dell XPS 15 l502x laptop with W7 Home Premium.

Thanks in advance.

I tried doing a search but came up with nothing. The fingerprint scanner on my P50 just stopped working last week. No changes were made by me. In device manager there is an exclamation under Biometric devices/Synaptics WBDI. I tried disabling/reenabling and also tried uninstalling that and re-installing the Synaptics drivers from the support page but nothing is helping. I'm working on a project right now so don't have the time to do a Windows 10 re-install or contact support and inevitably ship this computer in for repair....so I thought I'd ask and see if anyone was experiencing this lately and if there was a simple fix (assuming the hardware just didn't fail suddenly). Thanks

The fingerprint reader on my W541 laptop stopped working.  It's been working for more than a year, and worked last week.  Now it's not working - not illuminated & doesn't read my fingerprint.  Going into 'Settings' (Windows 10), 'Accounts', & 'Sign-In Options', it says "Windows Hello is not available on this device".I believe 'Windows Hello' is the software that runs the fingerpront reader.Any ideas of what to look for to get this working again? I have not loaded any new software since last week (when the fingerprint reader was working). The last system update installed was:"Intel Corporation - Bluetooth - 11/14/2016 12:00:00 AM - 19.30.1646.853" - installed on 2/1/17 (4 days ago). The fingerprint reader worked OK after that update.

My fingerprint reader has stopped working again. It started working after the last Windows 10 update, but after some time it just stopped working. I got a message saying to "swipe my finger slowly". Now the reader's light is not even visible when I swipe my finger. I have not updated Windows again since I'm waiting for the latest update of Windows Creator to be available for my laptop.  All the other available updates for my laptop were supposedly installed on 4-17-17 Any help? I woke up this morning, turned on the laptop, and completely out of the blue the fingerprint detection stopped working with the message "Sorry, something went wrong" (It had been working for months).  So I removed fingerprint detection in Windows setup so I could reset it, however it will not let me set up a new fingerprint.   Here is what happens when I try and reset it: 1) Click Setup.2) Click Get Started.3) Message comes up "Touch the fingerprint screen" (NOTE: The green LED illuminates).4) Place the finger on the screen and the following message immediately appears:     Sorry, something went wrong.  Close Windows Hello, and then try going through the setup again.5) So rebooted to make sure that was not the problem and tried again and it still does not work. What else I tried: 1) I uninstalled the Biometrics Driver and reinstalled it from the Lenovo site.....Same problem. My laptop = T470OS = Win 10 Pro 64 bit (Latest Updates from Microsoft)All Drivers = (Latest Updates from Lenovo)Biometric Device = Synaptics WBD(SGX enabled)    The device is working properly    Driver = 5.2.3515.26 (05-23-2017)

After installing Windows updates and Dell's updates, including the "Dell Data Protection" software, the fingerprint login option ceased working.
I tried configuring the fingerprint login via the DDP Console, but in the end of the process (after configuring the fingerprint) it says that "The biometric unit is not in the proper state to perform the specified operation". What does it mean?

It is worth noting, that the biometric device reads fingerprints (I'm able to add\remove fingerprints via the Windows sign-in options screen and via the DDP Console, until it says that there is an error as stated above).
OS: Windows 10 pro
Please advise.

It sounds like hardware failure but try one more thing:
Reboot into BIOS setup (by pressing F1 at the ThinkPad logo screen).
Go to the security -> fingerprint menu.
There's an option about clearing the fingerprint sensor storage (or something like that).

Dear forum,

I recently updated my Lenovo E320 Keyboard- and Mousedriver. Something went wrong during the update. After the reboot I could not login to my Windows Account because the keyboard and the mouse stopped working. Keyboard works fine when entering/changing settings in bios.

So far I have installed a second Windows 7 on my second partition because I though I would be to somehow install the drivers from there. But I have not succeeded doing that.

Plese let me know if you have any useful hints.

Thank you very much in advance.

A:Keyboard stopped working after driver update - Windows login not possi

If you have an old PS2 keyboard laying around, plug it in and boot up. It should work. That will let you get to system restore using keyboard shortcuts, and you can use a restore point before the driver update was installed. Hopefully, that will bring back your USB keyboard and mouse. If the update caused the problem, I wouldn't suggest applying it again.

I've now tried installing the Windows 10 Pro Creator's Update twice, and both times my fingerprint reader stopped working for Windows Hello. I just get "Your credentials could not be verified". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver (and I'm on the latest), removing and re-registering my fingerprint, and I've also tried the trick I saw suggested elsewhere of switching to a local account, then back to a Microsoft account. That works temporarily but as soon as I switch back to my MS account, it breaks again. I've rooted around the BIOS but everything seems fine. I have the same fingerprint set on startup and that still works fine; Windows just doesn't recognize it, either when it's passed on from the BIOS or when I try to do it again manually. Has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it *without* reverting permanently to a local account? I don't see why that should be necessary and it definitely isn't supposed to be. I have reverted back to the Anniversary Update both times because of this issue.

I recently installed Windows 10 Pro 64Bit on this Dell Latitude E5540 laptop but can't get the fingerprint working...

I also installed the Dell data protection security tool for windows 10 (version:,A14) from Dell E5540 Support and Drivers page.

Windows had already recognized the the fingerprint reader as Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=003f) under Biometrics. But whenever I run the Dell Data Protection Console and try to register my fingerprint it always says:

"The fingerprint reader is not connected. Connect the reader."

The device is enabled in device manager and has no errors. It used to work fine when I had windows 7. Am I missing some drivers or software for Windows 10? I need the FP reader working ASAP.

Can anyone please help me out?

I can't find a way to use my fingerprint to login to the domain in Windows 8.1
It seems that Win8 is different that Win7 in terms of allowing for fingerprint domain login.  Based on what I found on another Win7 thread I did some modifications
and got this far in terms of fixing the problem:
In Administration Tools go to:
Local Group Policy Editor / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Biometrics

 Allow  the use of biometrics
(the default is 'not configured') Allow  users to logon using biometrics
(the default is 'not configured') Allow  domain users to logon using biometrics
(the default is 'not configured')
After this the PC will ask you to ?Lock? the PC and follow instructions.  I keep restarting the PC but can't get it to work yet; I'm probably misunderstanding
something or missed a step.

A:Windows 10 - can't activate fingerprint scanner login

After much trial and error, I have finally found a way to get the fingerprint scanner on select HP laptops to work with Windows 10 ?HELLO?. First, one needs to verify that the machine has the required scanner. The scanner is usually already installed in Device Manager, but not recognized anywhere else. So, to check that the device is the correct one for this process to work, its ID should be checked in Device Manager. To do this, follow these steps:Click on the Start button and type ?Device Manager? and ENTER. This should launch the Device Manager.Expand the Biometric devices. You should now see an entry for the Validity Sensor (It sometimes has additional descriptions, but all we need is to ID the VALIDITY device).Double-click on the VALIDITY device to open its? PropertiesClick on the Details tab and select Hardware Ids in the Property entry box.If the device can be ?fixed? with the process detailed below, it will have a Hardware ID of: USB\VID_138A&PID_0007You can now close all open windows until you are back at the desktop.Nothing has been changed yet, BUT?if the Hardware ID matches the entry above, you are ?good to go? in performing the procedures below! Hopefully, the Hardware ID will match on your machine and you can now proceed with the actual download and upgrade procedures as detailed in the following stages: Stage 1 - DownloadFirst, we need to get the correct driver for Windows 10. I need some help trying to solve a keyboard problem. Anyway, Awhile ago my keyboard decided to stop working... i remember there was some kind of usb port exceeding limitations error so i rebooted the computer and the keyboard didn't work at all. So I tried the broken keyboard out on our other computer and it still didn't work (so i thought it must be something wrong with the keyboard) So i got my keyboard that works from the other computer and everything was working again. But then shortly after the working keyboard stopped working (but it still worked on our other computer). So now none of our keyboards will work on the computer, however the keyboard that was working will still work when the computer loads up (e.g i can press f12/f2/f8) but when i get to the login screen i cant type anything so now i can't log in.

sorry that was a bit confusing because im really sick and have a huge headache =\

You can try accessing the Advanced Boot Options menu. Turn off computer and restart and as Windows splash screen begins to load continuously tap F8. This will bring up the Advanced Boot Options menu. From here you have several options. You might try System Restore Option. This will restore important Windows files settings back to previous settings. This utility is easy to use and gives step-by-step instructions to revert to a point in the past called a 'restore point' to return your important files and settings.

I have a curious Problem with a Fresh windows 10 Install (restore from Dell Media) and he Fingerprint Reader.
I installed all drivers inkl. Dell Security Tools. 2 Fingers are recognized in Software.
But after Restart from Windows, Login is only possible with PW or secure Question. When i then lock the laptop, login with finger print is available and possible ?!
Also when I then shutdown the Computer and re-power on, fingerprint login is also possible.
But when i press Reboot in Windows, the reader is again not available.
Also when the Computer hits standby and then is power on again, fingerprint is not available.

What can I do to get this reader always available ?

A:Lenovo E450, I have lost PIN, password, and cannot access fingerprint too. How can login to Windows?

Sorry, but the Lenovo Forum rules forbid helping anyone circumvent Windows passwords, or any other form of security on computer systems, so you will have to try to remember your password/PIN.

A:[SOLVED] Windows has stopped working

Hi Robert,

Did this issue happened all of a sudden? When was the last time your computer worked successfully? Try performing a system restore and set the date to where your computer was working fine. Also, try running a virus/spyware scan on your computer. Please provide an update when you can, thank you.

i get the message every time i launch ie and can't do a thing with it.
Tried the following but error still popping up:
1- resetting the internet options from control panel/deleting browsing history etc.
2- restoring the system to an earlier saved point
3- deactivating/activating back ie from windows installed components

A site suggested to run internet explorer performance troubleshooter but didn't know where to find that...

My guess is a sort of malware but i am not sure, any help would be most appreciated.

All of a sudden, when I go to this one particular directory on my computer and try to scroll down the page, Windows Explorer shuts down and restarts. All is well until I get to the last page in the list of files. When I page down to that last page, I get "Windows Explorer has stopped working" and Win Explorer restarts.

This is so strange because from all I can tell, it's only that one directory. It has about 15 subdirectories/folders and then about 200 files listed below. I tried switching the order from ascending alpha to descending and it throws me out. I tried viewing medium icons - throws me out. I can open a different directory with 1700 files, and no problemo! What the heck?!?! It's just this one directory.

I've run a virus scan - no threats.

Please help me. Thanks so much!

Windows worked one day and the next morning send/receive is selected a small window pops up titled DIal Up Connection with a connect button. Everything is blank nothing there. Further down a box says connect automatically, left unchecked ( when checked the same thing happens) below that is a connect button when selected says Dialing 1 attempt. failed. beside the connect button is a button that says Settings. This brings up the Internet Properties window with the Connection tab selected and there is a setup button that when I select says you are alread connected to the internet. (well I knew that.) Below that is a place to connect via Dial Up Connection. All blank, nothing there and below that is a LAN button that when selected a new window opens and a box which is checked, I unchecked and rechecked it, that says Automatically Detect Settings. This has been checked on this computer from the time I put it online, and it is so on the other two computers that I have online.

Then I go back to Windows Mail and select Send/Receive and we repeat the aboved sequence.

I have tried very thing that I can think of. Surely need some help with this Vista problem.

This has been going on for a week or 2 and this is what happens. Turn on computer, launch bumptop, and do whatever I need to do for about 4 hours and then this start happening. "windows explorer has stopped working". Click the cancel button and it goes away and pops back up imminently and click cancel again. Then 5 seconds later it pops back up twice. After It restarts and crashes bumptop, I don't even bother launching it again because I know it will crash when explorer crashses again.

After the 4 hour mark it does that every 5 minutes and it just doesn't quit until I restart. Graphic drivers are up-to-date and I've done a system file checker and it all checks out to be ok.

Any ideas are helpful.

I appreciate any and all help.

A few days ago, I was viewing some info on a web forum, and clicked on a member's profile to view his "personal webpage" which linked to hxxp:gnaa.us which is an odd site. Out of morbid curiosity (and pure stupidity), I clicked on the "members" area which triggered a chain reaction of pop-ups, etc which froze my browser. The images of the pop-ups were never displayed, just empty white boxes (hundreds of 'em). After a few seconds, I clicked on the "close" function (ALT+F4) to end the process. I surfed the 'net and found that this site is apparently a hacker site designed to attack your computer. So, I ran mrt, defender, and mcafee (all full scans) to check on my comp health. All reports came back normal, but since then my comp has been running slower than normal.

The last straw came last night, when I attempted to download a 16 MB file from Youtube via file2hd, and my computer just started crashing everytime I tried to go into my personal folder. The corrupt file was labeled video.mp4 and stored in my "downloads" folder. Being unable to access it, I had to delete the file with "deletedr." That seemed to clear up the problem, but this morning, my comp - while allowing me to actually access my personal folder now - still keep occasionally crashing (windows explorer has stopped working) when I am toiling in my user folder.

So, I followed the instructions here and scanned with dds an... Read more
