I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just installed windows 8.1 pro on an MSI z97 pc mate motherboard with I5 3.3 ghz processor, 16 gb ddr3 1600 MHz ram, with embedded realtek pcie gbe NIC. I checked and found that hardware virtualization is enabled by default in the BIOS.

I tried to set up a virtual switch using the latest bios and drivers from MSI. I created a virtual switch choosing the external option and the share with host OS option. I then connected to the VM. No network connectivity on VM but host still worked.

I then used autopatcher to update windows 8.1 on the vm. I removed and reinstalled the virtual switch choosing external option and share with host OS option. Same conditions occurred.
And then I installed the latest NIC driver. Same problem - media disconnected.

I tried this process with the latest driver from the realtek website which was a couple years more up to date. I had such high hopes! Same problem.

I then used msconfig to prevent all non-Microsoft services from starting and rebooted. I removed and recreated the switch and I was still hoping for success. Same exact conditions occurred.

These are the conditions that occur whenever an external switch with host os sharing enabled is installed in between all of these troubleshooting steps. It looks exactly the same every time...
The host machine can still access the network but it does so through the virtual switch. Ipconfig /all on the host reveals the following...

I am trying to map a network drive to a remote server. The server is not on the same network as the computer I am trying to map the drive on.

I have the external IP address, the port number, and the drive letter on the server.  I have entered http:// IP Address:Port Number/drive letter.  I get an error message stating that the drive path is incorrect.

I am using the network drive mapping wizard in the Computer screen.

The remote server is part of a local network with 3 other computers running in the VMware workstation connected by NAT connection .I run this server port number 9000 of host machine  by Port forwarding method.

I need help with the proper syntax for mapping the drive to the remote server.  I can't get my Windows 10 machine to connect to the server.  I need to get shared folder of virtual machine in another computer.

How do I map a drive to my remote server?  Please be specific as I am not that familiar with networking.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I am running a server in vmware workstation which is connected with NAT connection. I made port forwarding for access this virtual machine from outside the host computer. That is when type host computer ip:9000 in chrome it redirects to server web interface
which is running in vmware workstation because I redirect port 8080 in virtual machine to port 9000 in host machine.

Now I want to get all shared folders in the virtual machine . when I typed host ip in run dialog box it gives only the host machine shared folders . when i typed host ip along with port number it shows error.

What should I do for getting all shared folders of virtual machine in other computer in same network.

Note:Should not use bridge network connection.

Whether it is possible?.

I have an old program that will run on XP but not Win 7 Pro and I am using Windows Virtual PC on my laptop to run it. It works fine but I cannot access files (share drives) from the main hard drive, i.e., the Win 7 file structure. I can work with the VM XP file structure but not the main files. I am able to access flash drives from the VM and so I can move the files around this way but it is very cumbersome. This machine is not on any sort of network. I have done the same thing on my desktop and have exactly the same problem (it operates on Win 7 Pro as well). Security is not a concern; I am the only user of these machines.

I have read what I can find about this and tried resetting all kinds of "sharing" permissions, including sharing just a folder instead of the entire drive, enabling sharing from both the Win 7 side and the VM XP side, etc. I've tried everything I can but to no avail.

Can anyone offer some ideas and/or direct me to a thorough discussion of this issue? Thanks in advance.

I've just installed a virtual machine (running XP Pro) onto my Vista machine. The Vista machine has a USB external hard drive attached. When trying to access the data on this hard drive from within the virtual machine (via the bridged network link between the virtual machine and the host) it is incredibly slow. I've tried moving the USB hard drive to another PC on the network (running XP Pro) and accessing it from the XP Pro virtual machine on the first PC, and this works fine. I'd be very grateful for any help or ideas!

I asked this question to the PCMover team, but I haven?t got any competent answer or solution. However, the question is related to how the Windows registry works. This is what happened:

1. I had performed an In-Place upgrade from XP to Win8, so I got the Windows.old folder.
2. I had transferred many of the XP applications onto the Win8 machine, using PCMover.
3. Recently, I launched PCMover again to transfer more applications. It went past the ?[Transfer] Setup? screen/stage, where is asked me about the location of Windows.old. Then it got to the ?Analyze PCs? screen/stage. That means PCMover accepted that
location of Windows.old.
4. During the analysis stage, PCMover stopped responding (crashed).
5. I re-launched PCMover, but this time, on the ?[Transfer] Setup? screen/stage, it gave me this error:
-----------
ERROR: "The registry is already loaded for this image. Remove the virtual machine or use another image prefix."
-----------

It is obvious that PCMover tries to build a virtual machine image, but it cannot, because there is another one with the same name/prefix. Who had created that?? Obviously, PCMover itself in its previous session that went wrong. No other application was
run between the 2 attempts! PCMover seems unable to cancel the previous image and create it again fresh.

Although my problem is specific, my question goes beyond PCMover itself:

Where can I find a virtual machine "image"... Read more

Hi there

I usually run a LINUX HOST for testing Windows VM's - but I need to test some new releases of various Linux distros so I've created some VM's --easy enough and running them on a Windows Host.

However I can't attach a USB drive with a Linux file system (XFS) to the VM as the Windows HOST rejects the HDD wanting me to format it !!. There's 2.7 TB of media files on it - I want to test running media server in a VM.

Anybody know how to bypass the Windows nag prompt about the HDD and be able to attach it direct to the VM.

(The other way round is no problem -- never a problem loading NTFS HDD's on to Linux machines -- however the NTFS file system is SLOW compared with XFS -- on USB3 device on Native windows transfer rate of 1 TB of files from fast NTFS HDD to NTFS USB3 device is max 82 Mib/s - average for whole transfer. On same machine with Native Linux and XFS to XFS (using same HDD's and USB 3 port avg speed is 350 mib/s !! -- HUGE difference !!!).

Note I have to have a Windows Host for this --I know I could run Linux VM's from a Linux Host but in this case I do have to use a Windows Host as that will be the destination system at the end of testing.

BTW I'm running VMWARE workstation 12.1 on W10 Pro Host.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have installed the Virtual XP mode.  A long time ago Virtual XP was fully running, with access to host resources (drives etc).  But my system underwent some software changes, and then Virtual XP could no longer
access the host resources.  After trying (unsuccessfully) all the tricks found on several forums, I decided to uninstall then reinstall Virtual XP, which I have just done.  But I still can't access host drives.  Here's how Virtual XP is set
up:
Workgroup name is set to the same as my host (confirmed in 'My Computer'/Properties/Name);
Networking 'Adapter 1' set to my host's NIC;  I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Virtual XP (this has worked previously; all devices on my Win7 network have fixed addresses, for good reason).

Integration Features has ticks in the boxes for those host drives I want to access from VXP.
I can successfully ping the host, via name or IP address;  I can successfully ping web sites by name (e.g. 'yahoo.com').  But when I open Windows Explorer and open the 'My Network Places' tree, it opens down to the name of my host workgroup, but
when I click on that workgroup name, after several seconds it pops up an error box saying: "<workgroupname> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  <blah blah>.  The service has not been
started."
Any suggestions on how to get access to my host... Read more

Can someone explain the difference between these 3 programs?

A:Remote desktop, Virtual Machine and Virtual Box

Hi Jason6161 Two of these words are closely related, while the other one isn't.Remote Desktop is often a reference to the "RDP" acronym, which means "Remote Desktop Protocol", a protocol used by Microsoft Windows systems to remotely connect to another Windows system (or even other OS now). There's a nice little article on Microsoft website about, I suggest you to give it a read. If there's something you don't understand in it, let me know and I'll explain it to you.Connect to another computer using Remote Desktop ConnectionA Virtual Machine is like the state name, a machine that doesn't exist physically, it only exists virtually inside a system. It's the emulation of a system inside another system. So you could for example have Windows 8.1 installed on your computer, but using a program, create a virtual machine running Windows XP in it. To put it simply, it's running an independant system (guest) inside a system (host). It's what we call an "hypervisor". A program that allows you to create and manage virtual machines. Here's a strange issue--at least I think it's strange. I have an old application that I've had since I had Win XP. I'm not sure but I think I had it even on Win 98. Even though it's an old app I was able to install and run in on Vista and Windows 7. I now have the pre-release Win 8 installed on VMware Player and I was wondering if it would run in Win 8. So I opened Win 8 and put in the CD, clicked on the setup.exe file and it installed--or so it seemed. It always installed a short cut on my desk top before. So I looked and didn't see it. It was supposed to have installed in a particular folder, but I couldn't find it. I then installed it again and chose to put a short cut on the desk top. But, it wasn't there. The bottom line is that even though I had Win 8 open in the guest, I discovered that it actually instaledl on Win 7--on the host machine even though I installed it while the guest machine was open. Has anyone seen anything like that before? I suppose it happened because it was such an old app.

A:App installed on host machine while in guest machine

When you put the cd into your drive, it fired the autoplay on your host machine and not within your Windows 8 VM. It installed on your Windows 7 host machine. If you had been in the VM, and launched the setup from within the VM, it would not have installed on your host machine. PERIOD.

In Virtualbox's main screen, select your XP machine (do not start it). Click settings. On the left side, click System. On the Motherboard tab, set Base Memory to 1024. On the Acceleration tab, be sure that both boxes are checked. You may need to enter your computer's BIOS and enable its virtualization features. On the left side, click Display. On the Video tab, be sure that Enable 3D acceleration and Enable 2d video acceleration are checked. Click OK to save the changes.Start the XP virtual machine and let it finish booting. Above XP you'll see a menu bar. Click Devices > Install Guest Additions and follow the prompts. You will not be able to install your ATI drivers. Virtualbox is emulating its own set of hardware for Windows XP to use. My instructions will tell Virtualbox to give XP enough resources to run your game.As for the game itself, if it is on a CD, click Devices > CD/DVD Devices and make sure that your CD drive is selected.

Hello everyone,

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with the following. I tried to use VMware's free "converter" software to convert my physical HP machine to a virtual machine. However, when trying to run the virtual machine, it says that the virtual machine has two processors & that it is limited to only using one processor, & therefore, will not start. The physical machine is a dual core processor, but I see no way to configure the virtual machine so that it only has one processor.

It seems to me the software should just configure itself to at least run, and from there a person can try to tweak the settings and be advised if there are limitations at that point, but that would make to much sense. Alternatively, they could provide an easy way to change the settings so you can at least get the thing to run, but again, that would make to much sense.

Anyway, if anyone can help me get the virtual machine clone running, please let me know.

Thanks
John

Would any of you be so knowledgeable (and patient and kind :-)) to see if you can sort out which mistake I might be doing ?

Don't know about VMware Player, but in general VMware can forward USB devices to the guest OS. There should be a place in the UI where you attach and remove the guest's peripherals.

does anyone know if some MS guys have said something about it in a blog or something? I just wondering because I use this feature (spaces or know mission control - or the same thing with another name in linux) all the time. They make multitasking for me (and a lot of other guys) faster and more pleasant than using the taskbar. So Win is the only OS which doesn't have something comparable.

btw. all 3rd party implementations from a virtual desktops in Win feels just very "unsmooth" with it's transitions (flickering windows etc) and not very reliable (I tested a lot of them). They behave all like an alpha version.

A:why doesn't Win have a virtual desktop like OSX/Linux

I'm sure they've been asked a million times, just not something they've ever seriously considered. I agree with your assessment of the third party tools as well. Never found one that I wanted to stick with.

And now... in the Metro world, your not expected to be running more than one or two apps at a time anyway so who would need multiple desktops full of multiple apps open at once any more? (I'm being facetious of course, but the way MS is going, they certainly don't)

I am running Mac OSx through virtualization using VirtualBox. I have a bunch of stuff on there that I don't have on my main OS, Windows 7. I was wondering if there was a way to be able to access it on windows without opening the virtual mac, or without downloading it separately on the windows. Because everything is still on this hard drive, so can't I just search for it in windows and be able to find it? It's not that big of a deal for now since its just mainly pictures and music, which I can easily get on Windows in the first place. But I was thinking about putting some movies and bigger sized files on OSx and I just started wondering if I would be able to get them on the windows.

Anyways, like I said it's not that big of a deal if I can't. I just want to know if it's possible.

And just to quickly re-explain my little situation just incase you got confused. My computer runs Windows 7. And through a program I download called VirtualBox, I can boot into Mac OSx through virtualization. I creaded a virtual hard drive and gave it like 120 gigs out of my 600 gig hard drive.

Laptop (HP envy) has lost Wifi and Internet connectivity on the Windows HOST - but a Linux VM I'm running on the same laptop has absolutely NO problem connecting to both 2.4 and 5 GHZ wifi networks.

The Wifi card in the computer is a bog standard Intel Dual Band Wifi adapter AC7265 -- been running fautlessly ever since the start of the W10 program.

Not sure why this adapter should suddenly stop working - I've checked the VM and it hasn't "hogged" the device by disconnecting it from the host.

Reverting back to BEFORE latest updates were applied -- all working again.

(No changes of any kind were made to the Linux VM so it's not the VM that's at fault here).

Can't understand why this update should hose up a perfectly decent reliable piece of working hardware !!!!!!.

Cheers
jimbo

A:1607 - no Wifi on HOST but Linux VM has no problem with Internet !!!

Not knowing VMware, I was just wondering if it has a similar setting like this in Hyper-V:

When the option highlighted in above screenshot is selected in virtual switch properties, the virtual machines using this switch can connect to Internet but host has no Internet.

Hi,

I am using VitualBox 4.1.8, on Windows 7 (32 bit) Ultimate. I have installed Scientific Linux 6 on VirtualBox.

Now what I want is, I want to bypass USB drive detection in Windows 7, and to be directly detected by Scientific Linux. Let's say I have a USB drive infected with bad*** viruses, that are like a puppie on Linux.

So when I plug in my drive, how can I disable detection of it in Windows 7,but not in SL 6, and use it there so that I can remove the pesky viruses or do whatever.

I have enabled USB controller in VirtualBox.

Thanks

Hi there

Mp3tag very useful tagging program for music files -- you don't need to run this on a Windows VM on a Linux host. This runs 100% perfectly on WINE on the linux host.
I did look at some pure linux alternatives but although the interface was OK they didn't wotk !!.

Wine also runs WINAMP PRO -- I still like Winamp as a) it plays in folders, b, rips CD's in FLAC, 3) uses GRACENOTE DB rather than FREEDB - Gracenote is far superior for Classical Music.

Hi there
Workstation Version 10.2 Host running these distros - same observations for both hosts. Opensuse / Linux Mint 17 both 64 bit. Guest is windows 8.1 update 1.

I seem on the df -h command get a /tmp file around 4GB which is 95% allocated. This goes down to 0% when the vm is powered off.

I can't seem to find any way to increase the size of this file or configure it in any way -- is this just VMware using disk space or will my Guest eventually fail because lack of disk space. There's actually plenty of space on the HDD itself. !!

Heya. I have barely any experience hosting game servers; the last time I did it was many years ago.
I'm wondering whether it's possible to host a game server (e.g. Counter Strike Source, or The Hidden) with a GNU/Linux operating system (probably Ubuntu) and have Windows-based clients connect to the server to play online.
I tried researching the issue but it seems this is not a popular question. Search results seem to indicate that it's perfectly doable, but reliable confirmation would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you in advance.

As long as the game can support both OSes, it should be fine as the data between computer is the same.

I am a web application developer, and I use the virtual host feature of the Apache web server to have local copies of several web sites on my PC. This has worked for years under Windows XP, Windows 7 and also Windows 10 - until installing the Creators Update,
since when I can only access one of my virtual hosts with Internet Explorer. I can access all of them with Edge, Firefox, and Opera, but all but one of them give me the INET_E_RESOURCE_NOT_FOUND error with IE.

I have tried the suggested fixes I have found in numerous posts, but none of them work. Any ideas?

Hi,
Any help will be much appreciated guys!
I 'm trying to give an internet to that virtual machine JanusVM
which I power by VMplayer.
So far I have no success.
My ISP map my MAC to my IP so when I bridge the ethernet adapter of JanusVM to the host PC I do not have any internet at all.
I tried to NAT the virtual ethernet adapter either, but no difference.
My OS is WinXp Pro.
Any ideas ?
