Laptop Randomly Turns Off When In Battery

Q: Laptop Randomly Turns Off When In Battery

My laptop keeps turning itself of when it is on battery. It lasts about 20 minutes, but is getting shorter everytime.

The battery is not running out- when I turn it back on it has 50% charge normally.

It turns off as if it has no power- no warning, and when I turn it back on it reloads and everything is new, with documents and Internet sessions needing restoring.

How can I fix this? I don't think it is the battery, as it has charge when I turn it back on, and it only has 20% wear.

Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to TSG!!

If it's truly random, it won't be the Power Management settings. Some laptops have a utility that enables you to "calibrate" your battery. It will fully charge, then fully discharge the battery, perhaps more than one cycle, to allow the laptop to "learn" the battery's capabilities and characteristics. Check and see if you can find such an app. Different manufacturers will give it different names. Also, check their Web site to see if it is a separate download.

Bought Yoga 900 on 12/30/15.  Recently, it shuts down randomly on battery or AC Power.  Is there a software update I'm missing? It doesn't appear to be battery related since the issue occurs when plugged in too.  I reviewed Power Settings to ensure it wasn't being turned off as a result of a setting.  Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Dear all,
Few months ago, my laptop got an issue with OEM battery and it was out of warranty period.
I bought a new alternative battery and installed it to my laptop. I ran all diagnostics and there were no problem found.
At full charge, I unplugged the AC power and my laptop turned off randomly.
I tried to turn it on again, it only loads until Windows log-on screen and turned-off.
I started again in Set-up mode on battery and ran diagnostic from DOS environment, there were no problem detected.
Again, started Windows normally, but it turned off at Windows log-on screen.
If I connects it with AC power, I will see battery at more than 95% or even full-charge.
Do you have any idea or suggestion to solve this problem?
I am using the Windows Fall creator update with a new installation.
Hope to have your help! Many thanks!

I've always been running on A/C power but lately my computer loses power for no reason. It's not that it shuts down, but instead it just turns off like it suddenly lost power. I thought maybe my charger was dying so I bought one from HP but that hasn't changed anything. My battery hasn't worked in a really, really long time so I never put it in the laptop anymore. I tried the computer in the outlets in my bedroom and in the library and I got the same results. Sometimes the power shuts off as the computer is booting, other times it lets me get to the home screen and I can play on the computer on a while before it loses power. I always keep my laptop on top of a chill pad. Although I've noticed my fan doesn't turn on when I turn on my computer. Is it suppose to? Also, I think I might have heard a noise from my fan. How can I be sure it's the fan?

I have a HP G60 120US. I bought it in 2008. It's running off Windows Vista Service Pack 2.

A:My laptop randomly turns off

The laptop is definitely old enough for some service. It is possible that the cooling fan is worn out and/or dirty... if the fan is not running properly, the laptop will sense a over-heating condition and it will turn off. Have the laptop serviced and new batteries are cheap enough on EBay

My Hp Pavilion Notebook has started randomly turning off today. It happened 2 times today and once yesterday. It basically just shuts off as it would if i held the power button down, and then restarts on it's own. It brings up a black screen saying that the system wasn't responding and shows options to start in safe mode or whatever (i'm sure you know the one i mean). My laptop is just over a month old so i don't understand why this is happening. I don't think it's an overheating problem because i have a cooling pad which i always use. My laptops been running around 40C all day, which isn't any different from any other day. Any insights on what the problem could be?

Send it back for a refund. That sounds like a hardware failure, and HP doesn't have a very good record of fixing hardware problems permanently.

I have an Acer Aspire 4730z laptop, and recently it has been turning off (as if someone unplugged the power cable from a desktop) after short periods of use. It turns off when doing no particular task, but it just does it after 10-40 minute periods of time. It doesn't seem to have this problem in Safe-mode.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong? My current belief is that some component of the computer is faulty and its causing an instant shutdown. Also, the laptop didn't always do this, but only started to after a couple months of use. I also don't think that it is overheating because I've tried my best at keeping the computer in a cool environment.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

A:My Laptop randomly turns off

A laptop shutting down is usually caused by overheating. Blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Make sure there is ventilation to the bottom of the laptop. Use a laptop cooler. Also, remove the battery and run it on the power adapter only. If that works, then the battery may need to be replaced.

I own an Alienware 13 R3; just got it today.

For some reason, the screen keeps turning off when a notification pops up, or when I click on links on youtube, twitch or google. (other sites as well, but I don't think it's important)
I have disabled a 'Tobii' software thinking it was the main issue, but even though it helped the problem is persisting.
The screen is perfectly fine when I'm not using it, but after a few minutes of interacting with the interface the screen cuts off.
I find it strange because the keyboard, sound, trackpad... it all works; I tested it by opening a word document, waiting til the screen cut out and typed random stuff; after rebooting the system it was all there.
I have no idea how to fix it and I really don't want to wait 2 weeks for Dell to fix it. Can't seem to find anything online either to help...

So HP laptops have a tendency of overheating... and when they do, they power off immediately. This is NOT that issue. When I'm working solely on my battery (no AC charger) My laptop will turn off in maybe 45 minutes... I keep an eye on the battery level and it never drops to below 20% when this occurs. The laptop isn't burning hot and no error/warning messages are displayed (and no beeps).... Just poof power off. Ive downloaded the newest HP support assistant and ran the battery test and it said it was fine.I've tried to the manual calibration (since Support assistant isn't giving me the option to calibrate it) where I do the diagnostic logic (F2) and run the Hard Drive test on Battery until the laptop dies... Plugged in the charger and restarted.. what do you know, battery was at 40%... on the battery battery level button is showing half-charge.... So what do I do when the laptop is saying battery is good - not replace... How do I force that calibration? Something is wrong in that the power is dying half-way through the power cycle. Apprecaite any advice!

1. Laptop turns off without any warning, when the battery is low. There is no "low battery" indicator or anything of that sort. The laptop just turns off. This has been happening for over one and a half months now.2. The battery also lasts lesser time than what the battery indicator indicates (MUCH lesser). It has been a little over 2 years now since I purchased this laptop. Ofcourse it depends on my usage. But the battery indicator should suggest reasonably sensible "lasting" time right?

Whenever I unplug my computer from its charging cord it automatically turns off. I was having this problem before, but replaced the battery with a brand new one. It was working fine and I broke in the battery by charging and discharging it fully for the first 3 cycles and the laptop was working well without power for the past week since I got it, other than taking a minute or so to respond to me pushing the power on button before working when it was not connected to the cord. Now this morning it switches off whenever I unplug it even though the battery says it is at 100% charge and still charging. But, the light on the side of my power port is on red/orange when I have it plugged in, but only when it's lid is closed and it is fully booted up. I checked on other forum answers and tried changing to different power saving plans and even switching all options to 'never' but nothing has worked.I also looked at the pins underneath my laptop where my battery should go to see if they are damaged. Two of them are on a different angle to the rest but I think this is how the laptop was built anyway? I dont want to move them incase it just makes the situation worse. What should I try next? I would like this fixed ASAP as I need this laptop for school and often don't have access to a power plug in class. Thankyou.

I have a two year old Dell Inspiron 15R. Today while adjusting the screen in a normal fashion, I noticed something putting upward pressure from below the top right part of the keyboard (it was actually 'pressing' the quick launch buttons that are there because it was pushing up from under them). Later, the screen hinge on the bottom right burst out of the laptop encasing. Since it was sticking out, I could see that the hinge had become dislodged from where it is screwed in, so the hinge was pushing up whenever i moved the screen back. I opened the case to check it out. I saw that the cylinder that the hinge screws screw into had cracked and broken so that the screws were just hanging off the hinge. There was one lone screw that still had a spot, but it must have slipped out from constant moving. I took the free screws out and screwed in the lone screw as a temporary fix. I also unhooked the ribbon cable that connected the three quicklaunch buttons to the mobo, so that they couldn't be accidently pressed anymore (this laptop shipped with win7, and when i updated to win8 those buttons become mostly useless)

I then closed the case thinking everything would be fine since I fixed the hinge for now. After a couple mins of computer, I botted up civ5 and before the game started, my computer suddenly flickered off. I let it rest for a bit because I didn't know what could have happened, but a few mins later i started it up again and it started without problem. I tr... Read more

Based on the dumps from April, you might uninstall Spotify, as it seems to be related somehow.

Also, uninstall Daemon Tools for now, and then remove SPTD with the tool found here: DuplexSecure - Downloads

Other things to try: flashing the latest BIOS offered on the HP support page for the particular laptop model.

Hi! I'm new here and I need some help! Yesterday I bought a manufacturer refurbished Dell Inspiration  14 (5447) and I found 2 small problems so far.
The first one: The laptop magically turns off. I mean it looks like it turns off but actually goes into sleep mode/standby when I try to move it somewhere. For example: If I put the laptop on my lap - the screen goes black. Now I can't do anything but to press the power button so I can turn the laptop back on. But wait! I have to stay still and not move the laptop in order to do so. No matter where I put the laptop. It goes into sleep/standby mode. Even I hold it in the air and move a little - BAM! Yesterday was ok but today the laptop started to turn off more often.

The second problem: This morning I noticed that when I turn the laptop on a message appears saying: "Checking media: Fail" or something like that then the laptop restarts. It does that 2-3 times before the laptop finally boots. It never happend before!

Any sollutions ? Advice? Thank you so much! The laptops looks like is in warranty until 2018.

A:Dell Inspiration 14 (5447) - randomly turns off/standy/sleep mode when I move the laptop. Need help please!

Hi REINKAOSWOLF,
What is the current OS installed on the system?
Disable the sleep mode and check if the system goes to sleep when moved - Control Panel -> Power Options -> choose action for closing the lid - set it to do nothing. Then move the system and check if the display goes blank.
Keep the system on a flat surface and connect an external monitor. Swivel the LCD back and forth and check if the display goes blank on both internal LCD and the external monitor.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Keep us updated.

Antivirus: Windows Defender, Enabled and Updated I have a Toshiba Satellite C 875 that is about 6 years old . It works fine plugged in , but randomly shuts down completely on battery power . I got a new battery , which made no difference , and a second battery , which made no difference. It seems like this started after an update , so I was wondering if there was something in windows 10 that I need to reset , or download to make this work properly again ? Hopefully it is not the cheaper batteries that I got ( $25.00 each ) , or a bad connection issue.

I've been having a frustrating time with my laptop the past few weeks. Basically, it just shuts down out of nowhere after a few minutes (fluctuates...sometimes happens after a few hours). I noticed that every time it happens, the fan on the side gets loud for a few seconds right before it shuts down. That led me to believe that my CPU was overheating so I installed software that checked the temperature. However, I saw that my CPU was consistently around 40 C which I believe is normal.

I tried a few things to try to figure out what was going on. What I did notice was that when my battery is disconnected and I run the laptop just plugged in with the wire, it does not shut down at all. Could it simply just be a bad battery?

Here's the exact computer: http://www.cnet.com/products/lenovo...tel-core-i7-3630qm-2-40ghz-1600mhz-6mb/specs/

I appreciate any help with this.

Hello!

I'm looking for some advice and guidance.
I am not a technical expert on computer hardware. I understand the basics and that's about the extent of it.

My current PC is a Dell desktop/tower; it runs Windows 7; it uses an Intel Core Duo processor. It is a few years old (I'd estimate 3 or 4 years old). I plug my PC into a Belkin surge protector/multi-outlet device, which plugs into the wall electrical outlet.

My problem is that recently the PC randomly has been instantly powering-down and then a few seconds later powering-up again and rebooting. This happens twice or 3 times a day, on average. I have no explanation for it. I do know that it's highly annoying and I'm concerned and want to do something to fix this problem before any permanent damage occurs to my PC.

Last week, I searched the internet briefly for advice, and the two possible causes that popped-up in search results were: A) overheating, or B) issues with the power cord. Given that, over the past week, in my spare time, I have totally rerouted all the cords and wires behind my computer desk, to ensure that no wires were tangling, pulling, or weighing-down on the power cord for my PC. I also totally dusted out the cabinet and backside of the PC tower, and gently vacuumed the "fan" area on the back of the PC, to ensure it was free of dust and lint. I removed some random objects from the PC cabinet (CD's, mice, keyboard, etc.) to ensure that there was plenty of "ai... Read more

Dear readers,

as the title states, my laptop randomly shut down twice so far when the battery was inside, but the AC power cable was in the computer. The battery icon bottom left indicated that it was 100% charged, running on AC power on High Performance and when I was in a game it randomly went off. Rebooted quicker than usual, skipping some of the startup processes it usually does when I manually turn it off.

The first time it did this the battery was very hot, even though it was running on AC. This time it is not, it is barely warm.

Another thing to mention is that both times, after being back in desktop, the battery would be "0% available (plugged in, charging)", but it would not charge, it stays at 0% until I remove it and put it back in.

I am having a problem while playing games as well, which we are discussing in another thread here:
http://forums.techguy.org/games/863611-significant-fps-drops.html

And here is my original thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/games/863947-large-fps-performance-drop-stuttering.html#post6949452

Hope someone has some insight on the matter.

Kindest regards,
Vadim Zinkovski

Hi,
Some batteries can't take the electricity constantly flowing threw them i suggest you take the battery out when you plug it in the wall and put it in when your on the go. You battery does work still when you unplugg it from the wall right? And im guessing when your battery starts to fail it switches to "power saver" mode instead of "high performance" mode.
so take out the battery and plug it into the wall, store the battery until well until you need it. Hope this helps.
Also could be the result of a faulty battery..How long have you had your laptop?

Hey there,
I've been using my upgraded Inpiron 17R SE happily for a couple of years by now. I've even gone as far as buying an 128GB SSD to futureproof it. This is the only drive - besides the DVD drive - currently present in the laptop. However I've had an issue for quite a while:
Whenever I try to boot the Laptop only using the Battery (even fully charged) it Posts then loads Windows and turns of just before the Login-Screen (I can't see it). When I proceed to turn it back on, it Posts then beeps and says that there is a Real Time Clock Error and gives me the option to proceed booting or to enter Setup.
This however doesn't occur when using the Power-Brick. Moreover it isn't always the case. Sometimes the Laptop boots and works fine just using the battery, but then upon opening a Programm (while under battery-power) it shuts of and gives the same error message again. If it decides to work the battery still lasts for 2-2.5 hours.
I'm really confused to what the problem is. It could be a power delivery problem, but it's still the original battery and laptop with only the HDD changed to a SSD.
I'm aware of it being a rather old machine, but selling it is my only hope for getting a new laptop for college, but I can't sell it in this state.
I'm at a lost and really really sad because of this issue. I'm sorry for any typos or grammar mistakes, I'm a non native english speaker.

Hi, There seems to be a problem with the power management on my T570. I have two batteries, and I think the main one to be used is the battery 2. Sometimes, I'll be working unplugged, and my computer randomly turns off. Not the usual "Windows turning off" sequence, but an immediate blackout with no feedback. When I turn the computer back on, I see that Battery 2 is at 0% and Battery 1 is now in use. It does seem to be a problem in the power management, no? Thank you,Fred

A:My computer turns off immediately when Battery 2 reaches 0%, even if Battery 1 is 100%

Sounds like power management or battery reporting status wrong.  Are you still under warranty? If yes, call support first.  Can you get (borrow) another battery to try?

AMD Phenom II X6 1045
OCZ MODX STREAM-PRO PSU (700W)
8gb Corsair Vengance at 9-9-24 and 1600Mhz
Western Digital 1tb Green

I was told this was most likely a problem with HDD or RAM.
So i have tried replacing my HDD with an old spare, but the pc would still turned off. So i am running HD Tune on my primary HDD to test for errors.
The health tab returns no errors though so i am assuming that this is all good.

I ran memtest 86+ overnight , but with both sticks installed, and it returned no errors (should i retry with one stick at a time?) .

The apparent next cause of such an issue would be the PSU, but after runnnig occt for 30-60 mins it gave voltages on all 3 rails well within 5%, the largest deviation was about 0.5% . Should i also check the bios volatges ?

My cpu reaches about 70 C at full load under OCCT's burn in tests, so i dont think that would be a problem.

It seems to occur more in some games than others, although it also has occurred while at idle.

Also sometimes the peripherals and screen freeze for up to 3 seconds and then become responsive again, they also make the usb insertion sound when they reconnect , so i am assuming that they are losing signal from the mobo.

This leads me to believe that the mobo is the problem, although i dont have a spare one to test with at the moment.

One last note, it can freeze/turn off up to 5 times a day, but then work fine for then next 3-4 days... It seems completely random

Hello,

Please post the temp and voltage readings from the BIOS.

Once you have this info install HWMonitor and post a screenshot of the program at idle and under load (while gaming)

Randoms shutdowns can usually be attributed to overheating component or power related.

I'm having a problem with my new build, it keeps turning itself off at random times without warning. There's no specific pattern that I have noticed. Sometimes it won't even stay on long enough for me to reach the bios, and other times it will go all the way into my windows vista and stay on for a while. The first time I boot it up it was on for a good 4 hours, then it shut off. Turned it back on and it stayed on for like 2 hours. Now I'm at a point where its turning off at random times. What could be the problem?

WE are using very similar parts in our rigs but your pc cutting out could be a list of things. Anything from bios setup, drivers for numerous things and even bad wiring or memory setup. Without knowing what you have done to this machine it's very hard to tell and this kind of problem is a process of elimination. Tell us what you have installed and anything you altered in bios. If you overclocking it, then it's no wonder but odds are it's your bios or memory, possibly a driver. Set the bios to defeault or reset the Cmos on the board to reset it, install this Nvidia driver here
http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Restart following Nvidia instructions and see how it runs. Beyond that you may want to adjust your memory and try setting it a lower frequency. Many think higher speed ram is best but it's actually not, will read higher on Vista only because of latency. I run 667mhz ram unlinked and set to 533mhz in bios and then matches the cpu internal freq of 266mhz (q6600). You have double that. If you overclocking the ram is what will get you 1st, and god only knows what your timings are. Try the bios reset and make sure oyu have the correct Nvidia driver and then see how it's going.

EDIT: I just realized something very important and more regarding your memory you are using.. you can't install 1066mhz ram on a 750i! You can get it up to 1066 overclocked but you can only use 800mhz ram!! Scratch the rest of my advice, you need 667... Read more

My PC randomly shuts down. This all started roughly two weeks ago, but it keeps getting worse and more frequent. When it shuts down I have to flip the switch in the back, wait a few seconds, then flip it again before restarting. The power button on the front does nothing.
(The PC is completely off when it shuts down. It's not running at all)
I pinpointed the problem down to 3 possibilities out of everything I found on google that could be causing this.

1. Drivers are not up to date (this is a very high possibility BUT I think something is wrong because the updates are endless. Every time I log on to my PC, I get a notification from AMD that there is a new update available. I spent about an hour the other day just updating and restarting my PC over and over. Whats up with that?)

2. Overheating seems to be a common issue especially since it is Summer. BUT I have turned my fans up manually to 100%, simply started Overwatch, and just sat there at the Main Menu. My PC turned off within 30 seconds. I would say that is the issue but I have had my PC turn off during a Youtube video or just browsing the internet..... Plus my PC can handle BF4 and Overwatch with ease so why would it be an issue now?

3. I might have a virus. Windows Defender has been known to not be the best ( I have experienced this first hand) so this could be a possibility but I dont know for sure obviously.

I joined this website for this issue because I really dont know exactly what I am doing.

Hi guys,

I need some of your finest technical assistance!

I've been having a problem with my PC for months now where it seems to randomly turn off when under load (I've not seen it power off whilst doing regular tasks like word or chrome use).

I figured it was the power supply (that I have now replaced and the problem continues) causing the issues as the PC seems to just shut off instantly without warning. There are no blue screens or error messages when I turn the PC back on.

After looking at the event viewer this is what it tells me (see jpeg)

This is absolutely ruining my gaming experiences and if somebody could help me I'd be very grateful.
