Computer crashes: Shockwave or a bigger problem?

Q: Computer crashes: Shockwave or a bigger problem?

My computer has worked fine for years (~4 years old) until very recently (yesterday, it worked in the morning but started acting up in the afternoon)

I have been having issues and noticing it has been freezing a lot
Ive run countless malware/anti virus scans (malwarebytes and microsoft security essentials) but they find nothing
I defragged using defraggler
I periodically run Ccleaner to fix my registry and clear cache

thinking it was my HDD getting old I ran a check disk (checking both boxes: fix bad sectors and fix system errors)
It kept freezing on "CHKDSK verifying free space 5 of 5" at 63% each time
So I forced shutdown and rebooted and backed up my important files

While backing up I noticed my computer worked fine when navigating folders. also I have no issues with excel. But if I startup firefox or IE, when I try to use a search feature it freezes (not completely bc i can move the cursor but it in a never ending loading state, eventually forcing me to force shutdown and reboot.

I opened in safemode (with network off) and was able to open IE and Firefox and turn off all addons and extensions
I noticed "shockwave flash 11.4.402.265" was the only recently updated file (i have autoupdates on) so this too was then disabled
I then restarted

Everything now SEEMS to work great

No more freezing issues, and so far (about 10 minutes haha) i havent had an issue. but that is 9 more minutes then I had yesterday (it was one of those frustrating days that we have all had with a screwy computer)

So I want to chalk it up to the shockwave flash being the issue (tho all addons are off so it could be any of them) but I am still not sure why my checkdisk would freeze

is there a correlation between the two?

am I in the situation where my issue was the shockwave but my HDD is also on its way out? Did I get lucky that shockwave caused an issue bc it warned me to quickly backup everything bc a bigger problem is on the horizon?

any insight would be appreciated
hopefully this is the end of the issue, but with a 4 year old computer im sure the fun is about to begin

Preferred Solution: Computer crashes: Shockwave or a bigger problem?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lets not guess. Go to the website of your Hard Drive manufactuer and test the drive. Post your results and we go from there.

I've been running Windows XP and the latest version of flash on this computer for as long as I can remember. The only thing is, about a year ago my computer tended to restart itself when I tried to load a large flash/shockwave file on both IE and FF. Some websites cannot cause it to crash at all, Youtube, for instance, but other websites like GameTrailers cause the problem in hand.

I've tried installing and reinstalling them many times, but the problem persists to this day.

If anyone could help me to resolve this, I would be monumentally grateful.

A:Shockwave/Flash Player crashes computer

uninstall it.

Use this tool to do so:

Now, use your browsers for a while (I know it'll be tough without flash but make it so) are you still getting crashes? If so, go to Event viewer and review any errors. Paste the details here for more info.

Good luck.

More than likely; something has probably corrupted one or more files associated with shockwave. I would go into the control panel, then to programs; then to uninstall a program; then find shockwave and completely uninstall it. Then, using any web browser; go here and download and re-install shockwave:

Am suddenly getting a message at random times in my Chrome browser that "Shockwave has crashed" will a button to [Reload]. I have seen web pages that say it's because the Adobe Flash Player has 2 files and one needs to be deleted, but when I check Chrome for plugins, I do not have 2 Flash Player files. I have updated Chrome to the latest version. "Shockwave has crashed" messages still appear.

I notice this occurs only with videos from BabaMail, something I started using only a week or so ago. Today one of their pages contained malware (said "3 people have unfriended you" with a button to go to Facebook. . . which actually took you to some malicious site that was blocked by my Avast AV). Is BabaMail something to be avoided, or is it just coincidence that it happened with their site?

I've posted about this in the past and was unable to get a strong resolution, but I'm going to try again -- maybe the technology has improved since then, and the problem has suddenly gotten worse (affecting almost every time I open a page with video on it). What I'm referring to is the "shockwave flash" crashes in Forefox. I'll go the page, the browser will stop responding, then after a few seconds, a box will pop up with the heading "Warning: Unresponsive Plugin" and some text about Shockwave flash being busy. Sometimes it resolves itself, but it still causes a significant delay (usually over one minute). Other times, it tells me that it has crashed and I have to reload the page. Either way, it's extremely annoying and makes my time online less productive. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Is there some kind of alternative to Shockwave Flash that performs the same role but with more stability? Thank you!

okay so i have a windows seven laptop, and that's basically all i know. i received it as a gift in 2009, and i need to working for my first year of high school starting in a week. For the past few months i have noticed that my Skype has been very "bipolar" and if it decides to actually connect, the calls wont last long and will crash.
I decided that Skype was just being a "buttwipe" to me, so i tried to uninstall it and re-install. That unfortunatly, didnt work the way i wish that it would.
That was only the beginning for my frustration towards my laptop. Recently every time i go on YouTube, the videos wont run, and i get a notice saying either "Unknown has stopped working" or, "Flash Shock-wave has stopped working" Shortly after the notices, my Google Chrome crashes. I tried to go and look at previous questions asked on Yahoo Answers, most of which saying to uninstall it and re-install it. And, just like with Skype, that didn't work.
Before, viruses HAVE gotten on my laptop, and now i have antivirus that i scan my laptop with everyday, and update as frequent as possible, but every time i scan it says "Threats found: 0" and if you're wondering, i use AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 2011 because a well trusted friend recommended it when i found viruses before. It looks like many other threads here are unanswered as well. I don't know if it's related, but I also noticed that my recent posts aren't listed in the "find all posts" link for me. I am using a DELL Inspiron Model E1505 with Windows XP

I keep getting the "Aw Snap" Chrome Crash notice depicted below. This message came up while using my Chrome Browser but shockwave also crashes when I use Firefox.

I have attempted the solutions listed below but they have not worked.

1. disabled extensions
2. uninstalled and reinstalled Chrome
3. Uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flash
4. Have latest Adobe Plugins
5. Turned off Firewall
6. Run AVG anti-Virus Software to confirm laptop is not infected with a virus.

Related to this is that I have C-Print Software which I have been using at work for a few years was downloaded from a disk onto my laptop. Since the "Aw Snap" warning began appearing early this afternoon the software will not come up when I try to open it up.

These have not worked. Any suggestions for a cure?

Thank you

I found for a long time Shockwave doesn't work very well on Chrome and Google offered no effective way of solving the incessant problem which destroys the usefulness of Chrome for me.

Now I find this may have been solved by going to the test page for Shockwave at http://www.adobe.com/products/shockwaveplayer/ and although it is offered to work only on IE and Firefox when I downloaded it and ran it the test page worked on Chrome as well as Firefox. I dloaded Slim version and after installation restarted. Went with Chrome to the test page for Shockwave at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome/ and it seemed to OK the Chrome installation too, running the Flash icon revolving OK..

For the moment the Shockwave failures Chrome constantly recorded before seem to have disappeared.

Does that make sense? (If so why doesnt Adobe say it is for Chrome as well?) I have an s3500t with Vista 64 and Chrome 17.0.963.56 m (the latest Feb 27 2012)

Hope so, because this Shockwave plugin failure has been a pest for a very long time.

UPDATE: YAY! It worked. HP now rockets ahead like it was born yesterday.

A:Solving Shockwave Crashes in Chrome

For Chrome users with glued up PCs: Since the execrable flaw of incessant Shockwave failure notices and glued up PC resumed a week ago, we searched again for a permanent solution and may have found it. An Indian has kindly posted a video which shows you exactly how to solve the Shockwave problem, and one can see why. There are two version of Shockwave Plugin which tend to be installed on Chrome, a Macromedia Plug In and a Chrome Google Plug In. Follow the Indianís instructions by typing chrome://plugins/ in your address slot for urlís and then clicking the + sign to open up Details (top right hand corner). Go to the listing for Chrome Shockwave plug in and Disable it. Go to the Macromedia Shockwave plugin and make sure it is Enabled. Close the page and your problem should be solved, without even rebooting. Then thank the Indian.

I have a laptop (Lenovo W520 i7-2720QM, 8GB, Win7-Pro64-sp1), on which I have installed Microsoft Security Essentials and ZoneAlarm.
In the past few weeks, I have been having a problem with Shockwave Flash, which regularly crashes after a period of use (sometimes 5 mins, sometimes after over an hour of internet use), causing Google Chrome (14.0.835.202 m) to freeze up. When this occurs, I usually cannot resume Chrome and have to perform a reboot to fix things (the task manager lists 2 processes of Chrome for which I can't "End Process").
Looking around for advice on this issue caused me to suspect a rootkit infection, so I installed Malware bytes (v1.51.1118) and performed a full system scan, which was unable to detect anything (nor could MSE). Would someone please help me assess whether I might have a rootkit or other infection that MBAM cannot detect?

Also attempted uninstalling flash (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic394257.html/page__p__2225166__hl__chrome__fromsearch__1#entry2225166) which I was unable to do, and I also deleted my browser cache, but nothing has helped so far.

Hello, everyone,

I hope I've started this thread in the right place. I'm having problems with my browsers (chiefly Mozilla, but Chrome, too, of late).

What happens is that, upon startup, it takes quite a while (4-8 minutes) for Mozilla to start. When it does, there will be a banner at the bottom that says 'Mozilla seems a bit...slow...to start' (or something to that effect). I've clicked on it before and seen an ad for getting Grimefighter. I've seen poor reviews online for it so I've opted not to try it. Instead, I'd like some advice from here.

Once Mozilla has started, I get multiple messages about plugins still running and, if I'm trying to watch something on Hulu, Xfinity or, less frequently, Youtube, I get messages about Shockwave Flash scripts running long as well as multiple crashes. Mozilla Firefox has crashed as well (though a lot less frequently).

This has been going on for several weeks and has seemed to worsen over the last two weeks. Within the last week and a half, I've switched over to Chrome (which I've never really used) to watch videos on Hulu and Xfinity, but lately I've started getting page crashes there, too.

What can I do about this?

Thank you in advance for your help in this matter.

I'm not really sure where to post something like this. The Shockwave Flash plugin crashes multiple times daily for me. The error message says "The following plugin has crashed: Shockwave Flash". I use Chrome the most, but it happens to me on IE and Firefox, as well. An interesting thing I've noticed is that when it happens, it basically freezes my internet connection. I can't open new tabs, open any type of Messenger service, etc. without getting an error message stating that there is no internet, etc.

In doing my own research, most people have suggested disabling the "duplicate" version of Flash in Chrome://plugins, however I only have one running. I have reinstalled Chrome, reinstalled Flash, reinstalled my AV software, all to no avail. I am at a loss here and it is frustrating, to say the least. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. I value your time and effort.

I am running on Win7 and creating this post in Chrome. Please let me know what I can do to be more informative.

Forgive me if I posted this in the wrong forum... I'm still not entirely sure if this is a Shockwave problem, a browser problem, or an audio problem. I have a feeling it is the latter, but I'm really just confused at the moment.

It all started about a week ago when I was using TinyChat with no problems, when suddenly everything froze and I got kicked out. I wasn't able to get back in since.

Music was working fine, as were games and videos, but recently I have been attempting to play a few Facebook games and Chrome freezes and tells me that Shockwave Flash is unresponsive and asks if I want to close it. Eventually I can just close that window and it's fine, but if I go to any website with a flash based advertisement it does the same thing. Sometimes it gets so bad Chrome crashes.

Foobar and iTunes won't play anything (just freezes when I select a song), and my computer, despite having its volume all the way up, won't play any of the normal Windows sounds.

I tried using Firefox and the same thing happened, except it crashes the whole thing. I haven't tried IE yet but I doubt it will be any different.

I found this http://www.bitconsultants.net/2009/f...desktop-issue/
but I don't have IDT Audio to even uninstall. Could that be the problem?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Flash, but it's just the same thing happening.

Is it possible that the sound issue is also messing up Shockwave? I can't even watch YouTube videos without crashing my browser. H... Read more

Dear All, out of curiosity, i have a 80 GB HDD now and i am planning to get a 120 GB HDD soon. Does this inclusion of new bigger capacity HDD into my system translates into slower processing or boot up time ??

i am running a P4 2Ghz with 512 DDR Ram for your info. Thx !!

A:Bigger HDD equals slower computer ??

No, it won't slow down the sytem. The only things that may take longer will be various scans like virus scans and defrags - and that'll be more to due to an increased amount of data on the drive.

I'm thinking of moving my computer to a bigger case but I'm not sure what cases are compatible with my current motherboard. I own a Lenovo 90F1007QUS.  I need a bigger case because I'd like to upgrade the PSU to 500W and install a graphics card. Please respond with recommendations about how to go about upgrading to a bigger case.

hi, look at the GTX1050 OC Low profile from GIGABYTE, if you have pci-e, you could play all games with this videocard, and you do not have to change the power supply, it works for me I have a lenovo M800 SFF

I've had this computer for about a year and I've always had problems. I use to get blue screens when loading things that use a lot of memory. Now the computer will just freeze with blue screen and I have to reboot. It doesn't happen every time though.

For example, I'll be playing World of Warcraft which uses a lot of memory, I'll minimize and load iTunes. Sometimes it will freeze as it loads, sometimes it won't. Sometimes after it crashes and I reboot, I'll get a MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION blue screen as windows loads. If I restart again, windows will load properly.

I have the case standard 420w power supply. I used a power supply calculator and it was a bit over 420w but I don't know how accurate those are. Heres what's in my computer using power:

Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT
1,024 MB Ram (512x2)
Realtek AC'97 sound card
Floppy drive
Two optical drives (DVD-ROM and CD/DVD RW)
One hard drive
3-4 fans total
4 usb
case lights

A:Computer problems - need bigger power supply?

This one should work well with your board.

If you want to kick it up a notch for future upgrades choose this one.

If you want something a little less expensive, but good.

A friend of mine got the [email protected] on thursday night, we used the instructions on a previous post on here to try and fix it. Plus we got another from another site.

My friend is not getting any web connection, so he brought his work laptop home to download the software required to complete the process(on my advice). The burn them onto disk so that we could use them in the procedure.

We have downloaded paretologic, spyware doctor and registry mechanic as suggested on the other site. Plus smitfraud and avg as suggested on this site.

His laptop is now running so slow it is unbelievable, we can't get into anything. Have we downloaded another virus? I'm confused can someone help please?

We haven't even been able to get to the original problem. Is there new advice on this too?

I would be happy to attach a HijackThis log but here is the deal. My neighbor had this trojan. She thought the pc was clean except the fact that everytime she booted her pc, she got a message stating that windows could not find the C:\Windows\system32\mljji.exe file. She did a search for the executable but did not find anything so she decided to just delete any instance of mljji.exe in the registry. Once all of it was gone she rebooted. Upon starting windows, her user name now comes up at the login screen (which it never had before) and when she clicks on it, it asks for a password (which she has never set) She is not able to log into her computer to do anything now. She can't get into safe mode because f8 just brings up her boot menu. I don't even know if the safe mode would work anyway. I let her use a disk of mine that is bootable and enables you access to the sam section of the registry and it showed her account (Owner) as "dis/locked". We were able to unlock it, it also allows you to edit the password but the program we were using said the password is blank. Once we save what we did to the registry, we rebooted but to no avail it came back to the log in screen. It also takes a really long time to get there. We went back into the boot disk and it showed her account as "dis/locked" again. I am stuck at this point. She will definitely have to wipe her HD out and reload windows but the fool that she is, she has over 44 GB of personal pictur... Read more

Hi there!

I'm having a problem with either Java, or another piece of hardware/software on my computer - not sure which one, and I could use your help.

Here's what's happening -

Whenever I try to use a program that runs on Java (like Youtube), the program runs slowly - sometimes even giving out completely. When I first start the computer, everything works great - Java runs normally, things load quickly and so on. Then, within about 10 minutes, Java performace takes a nose dive.

It starts to move really slowly - things start to run really jerkily, like, it starts skipping chunks of the graphics, and loading starts to take forever. It also will start sort of freezing the computer for seconds at a time - but has never actually completely shut down the whole computer or anything. Sometimes, Java will just stop working altogether, and I get a message about needing to install Java or turn my Java options on. The only way to fix this Java crash is to wait it out - it eventually fixes itself.

For example, lets say the program is of a man walking from one side of the screen to the other. At first, the man will walk fine, smoothly, from one side of the screen to the other. Then, after a few minutes, the program will, within a matter of seconds, freeze, and unfreeze, the man in the location he should be in, but you having missed the graphic of him walking there.

The longer the program runs, the worse it gets.

The only thing that seems to fix it for a few minutes is ... Read more

A:Java Slow or Bigger Problem?

Hi Eshunkadunk and welcome to TSF

It might not be Jave at all. You may have something that is using up all your available memory in a growing fashion. Like a memory leak where an application keeps asking for something to load up, but don't give back the memory like it should when the called application is discarded. Next time, it asks for more memory thus it's memory usage just keeps growing.

You can look for these rogue applications using autoruns and process explorer. Process explorer will let you find them and autoruns will let you uncheck them to turn them off.

You can get the two programs here:

Try them and see if you can find an offending application and turn it off.
Programs that try to update their selves via the internet can do this.

Hope this helps,
