outlook 2002: shortcuts link to wrong folders/folders missing

Q: outlook 2002: shortcuts link to wrong folders/folders missing

I just installed MS Outlook 2002 that came with my t-mobile MDA pocketpc/smartphone w/ windows mobile 5.0, and when I click the calendar shortcut, I get "Unable to display the folder. Microsoft Outlook could not access the specified folder location." When I click the contacts shortcut, I get the calendar. The tasks shortcut gives me notes. Notes shortcut gives me journal. Both Outlook Today and Deleted Items gives me Outlook Today.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've updated through windows, microsoft, and office updates. I'm running win xp pro w/ sp2 and office xp.

When I right click the calendar shortcut, I get: "! unable to display folder properties. the folder may have been deleted or the server where the folder is stored may be unavailable. can't display folder properties."

When I go to what I think is the the directory of these folders, I don't see any of them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm missing several folders in Outlook! It began when I received an error message while attempting to open a folder in outlook. The error message suggested running a detect and fix program, which I did. Once that was done I opened Outlook to find that all the email accounts and the folders were all missing! I've since searched and located .pst outlook folders but can't open them. The drop down for browsing programs doesn't even list Outlook! I hope I'm not screwed and that someone can help me out...PLEASE!

I did recreate the accounts but that did'nt bring back the folders.

Hi,My USB thumb drive seem to have been infected by a Trojan. All the file folders inside the said thumb drive have become short cuts and the file sizes have been all reduced to 1 or 2 kb. The exact error message which I had received when I tried to double click on the short cut is as follows: "Windows cannot find 'G:\RECYCLER\0xFFD12566.exe'. Make sure you type the name correctly, and then try again." However, the overall properties of the said thumbdrive showed that my files are all still inside the thumb drive but they were being hidden somewhere. I went to the folder options -> view -> and clicked on show all hidden files and unchecked the "hide empty drives", "hide extensions for known file types" and "hide protected operating system files", and I was able to see and access to all my documents. I then used 2 anti virus programs (1. Norton Anti Virus 2012 and 2. Spyware doctor with Anti Virus) to search for any viruses/trojans but to no avail. Both programs indicated that my computer (inclusive of the USB drive) are free from any threats. As such, I would like to enquire:1. Is my USB drive infected by any virus/trojans? 2. Just recently we had a lightening storm in our area - my internet cable, tv and telephone were all affected so I am wondering if my problem is related.
I did have a surge protector and other than the following problem and the fact that my printed doesn't;t work now - I think my computer is working Ok.

Problem - when I forward an email to another person from any folder in my Inbox it copies itself and puts it back into the same folder and it doesn't send it to the intended recipient. I have tested and if I forward from the Deleted Folder and from the Inbox ( prior to an email being put into one of the folders) everything works fine.

I am not sure if somehow a feature got switched on my during the storm (my monitor was not plugged into a surge protector and there are a couple of faded colours at the top of the screen).

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Hi All... I'm a newbie here, NICE TO MEET YOU!

This is gonna be wordy ... thanks for your patience and for any help you can provide.

I have several profiles in my Microsoft Outlook 2002. One is set up for me and the other for my boss; My boss has two different email accounts in his profile... one is a hotmail account (HTTP) and the other is a POP3 account hosted by our ISP.

I go through his incoming email daily and 'forward' to him only emails I think he needs to see (which he reads from his laptop); I also delete spam and leave safe but non-important messages in the inbox by 'marking as read'.

Last Friday, my boss mentioned that he hadn't received any forwarded emails for a few days. When I went in to look, I discovered that there were 76 unsent messages sitting in an outbox (not the outbox immediately below his inbox*). I tried to open each and re-forward them, but it didn't work. I got no send/receive error; it appeared to process the send and receive, but the message didn't leave the outbox.

*While I was trying to figure out what was wrong, I noted that there are more 'outboxes' than we have email accounts... in fact, there appear to be 2 extra sets of all the folders.

I think the problem may be that there unnecessary multiple Outlook data files associated with his mail accounts, (I can identify them by clicking on the properties for each one) but don't know which to keep and which to delete. I'd appre... Read more

A:Outlook 2002 - Multiple folders - need help with various 'issues'

Hi there. It all sounds messy. Sometimes with multiply profiles and email accounts Outlook will try and send the forwarded messages via the same account that received it. I've had a similar problem with two email accounts in Outlook but each through a different ISP. They wouldn't forward a message received on one ISP account back through that account to the other ISP account.
When you click forward see if an accounts icon shows up beside the send icon. If so try clicking the drop down arrow beside it and sending the message through one of the other accounts.
As for all the double up folders it sounds as though someone has accidentally copied all the folders in the Personal folders list. If this is the case, then keep an eye on them, and if they are not used you should be safe to delete them.
You could also make a new folder called "Double Ups", and move them in to there. If everything works fine for a couple of weeks I would say it is probably a safe bet that you can then delete this folder. Then leave it in the Recycle bin for another couple of weeks if you want to be extra safe
Hope this helps.

I've an IBM desktop Intellistation and ThinkPad both using XP Pro. I've installed Outlook 2002 on both machines.

I can synchronize all my data files between the two machines fine. Would like to synchronize my email too, so both machines are up to date, no matter which one I downloaded messsages onto and replied from.

I've found programs called pstsync version 1.6.22 and synchpst version 1.4.7 which both claim they can do this, but read very bad reviews on synchpst.

Can anyone tell me which if any program will do this job well?

I'm in LA, and could find noone to guide me how to use Lotus Notes/Domino which "replicates" these Folders (an IBM service company said they'd charge $7,000just to come take a look!) I've used Lotus Smartsuite happily for years, including Lotus Organizer, but if there's no consumer-friendly Lotus Domino/Notes, then guess Outlook synchronizer is what I need.

Any help would be great. Been disabled a long time, and it would be fantastic to be able to safely go places with my laptop, do emails, then come back to home base and synchronize my email folders on my desktop.

Sorry if this message too long; first time I've used this site.

I've got my PST located on my external HDD. Imoved the location a while ago and I must have still been on OfficeXP 2002. All my machines are Office 2003 Pro and was wondering if it would benefit me to change the file folders to the new Outlook File Folders format.

Secondly, I've been trying to read up on converting possibilities. Would I just create a new PST (I guess in the same folder on my External HDD) and then move all my folders (Contacts/Inbox...) to the new Personal Folder in the list, then delete the old PST file.

I've read a lot about creating Profiles on the machine via Control Panel--> Mail. If I do that on each of my machines, would that cause any glitches (some error message that a folder is missing or something) whenever I plug in my external HDD and use outlook because the profiles may be slightly different for whatever reason on each machine. Right now, my Outlook runs really smooth in terms of email, contacts and calender.

The only bump I keep getting is if I am writing an email and I click the 'To' button to show my address list, I get a message that the list is missing. It must be trying to look for the contacts folder on another machine's setting, but in reality it should be looking at the same Contact List from the PST file on my External HDD.

Every now and again I load Outlook and another set of Personal folders has been added under my current set. They completely duplicate the folders and messages already in my Personal Folders. I now have five sets of these - each a snap shot of my folders when it was created. I wish to delete them and, of course, I can delete those which duplicate the folders I created - but they contain Intray, Deleted Items etc. etc. which Outlook will not allow me to delete. How do I get rid of them and how do I stop Outlook creating new sets in the future?

My second problem with Outlook 2002 is that I wish to create weekly back ups and have always done so by exporting to a pst file. After many years of doing this I am now getting the message: 'The operation failed. An object could not be found.' So, I am unable to over-write the previous file and have to create a file with a new name. This is OK except that I now have a very large number of pst files which I cannot delete - and it appears that Outlook is constantly adding data to them. Indeed, it seems that this is happening even on days when I have not exported, because the dates of the files are those of the latest day I have accessed my computer.

Can anyone help? Many thanks

Can you post a screen shot of the window. I am not exactly sure what you are talking about.

Outlook will only have one pst file per profile. When adding fields to that profile you should be able to open Outlook, click on the Inbox or what is showing and then click on File, Folder, New and then click on the heading you want it to appear under.

IT should create it. But for some reason I am getting the feeling this is not exactly what you want so if you can show the window maybe it will help me understand.

Hi. A few days ago I clicked Yes to allow OE to compress files to clean up wasted space. Didn't notice anything peculiar right away & may be unrelated. However, a couple of days ago I opened OE & found I had folders that reappeared that I had deleted in the last month. Thought it was odd, but didn't look further in to anything. Just deleted the folders again & deleted my deleted Folder. Well, last night I went to add a new message to one of my folders & saw that folder was gone as were LOTS of others. I have easily a half dozen or more folders that are just gone, as are all teh emails in them. Any way to get them back without it costing a fortune? I'd like them back but it's not worth taking to a shop to get them back I don't think.

Thanks in advance, hope you can help or at least tell me what the heck happened & why it may have happened.

I recently upgraded from Windows 98 SE to XP Home. When I did, I opted to use Outlook 2002 rather than Outlook Express which I had used with '98. Two things happened from which I don't seem to be able to recover.

First - I lost all the messages from Outlook Express. I wish I had them back, but I can live without them - so far.

Second - I have somehow acquired a duplicate "Personal Folders" list. I have two "Outlook Today" - [Personal Folders] listed in my folders list. Everything in the first one is duplicated in the second. When I download messages, they appear in both "Inbox" folders. When I add a folder to the first, it appears in the second and visa-versa. If I delete a message in any of the sub-folders. it disappears from the other "mirror" sub-folder.

So far, I have been unable locate an actual duplicate file anywhere. It's almost like Outlook is reading the same file twice and displaying it's contents in two identical folders. Although it doesn't seem to hurt anything, I'd like to get rid of the duplicate displayed folder.

I'm a rookie on this stuff, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

A:Outlook 2002 Duplicate "Personal Folders"

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools-Folder options.
Hit the View tab.
Make sure you ARE viewing hidden files/folders.
Make sure you can SEE file extensions for known file types.

Do a search for *.pst files.

You probably have two in the same location somehow.
Just move one of them someplace else.

You can't do it when Outlook is open. Only when it's closed.

You can also try running Detect and Repair from the help menu.

Search your hard drive for *.DBX files, these are your OE folders.

I was going through my emails on Outlook Express last night when the power suddenly went out. This morning i logged on, opened OE only to find that the Inbox is empty and there are folders missing. The sent and draft messages are still there however.

I did a search for .dbx files and found them in the directory. All the missing folder names are there, but i'm unable to open them from the directory and i don't understand why Outlook Express does not recognize they are there.

I did a Systems Restore to a restore point before the power outage but that didn't solve the missing messages in OE,

Hello!

I would very much appreciate some help finding my missing files and folders if possible.

I am running windows Vista version 6.0, service pack 2.

I started windows, and noticed that 5 of my desktop folders were missing, and all of the files contained within. A search for document and folder names returned nothing (even with advanced search options). One of the missing folders was called "term 1". I created a new folder, and tried to change the name to term 1. A pop-up told me that this destination (desktop) already contained a folder named "term 1"- did I want to merge these folders? I was confused, because I could no longer see the original term 1 folder. I clicked "yes" hoping that a merge would result in a visible term 1 folder, but now the new folder also disappeared. After some intensive searching, I could not find any of the folders/files that were missing. Some other folders/files were still visible on my desktop though.

I restored my computer to a previous checkpoint (from 2 days ago, after a windows update). After reboot, I received a message that the restore was unsuccessful. At this point, all of my desktop folders and files were gone, aside from windows default desktop icons. A search returned no results. A:Shortcuts to several folders

??? Why ??? If the movie is already in the folder, why do you need a separate shortcut that points to that movie file?

You can do this though.

The easiest way is to right click on the movie file itself then drag it a bit and release the mouse button.
Select Create shortcut here.
The shortcut is created and will have the same name as the file with - Shortcut added to the end.
Right click on it and select rename the4n you can name it anything you want.

You can also right click in the movie folder and select New / Shortcut then fill in the fields.

Greetings!

I'am having a trouble with my flash drives.
Every time I plug it in, shortcuts with the name of my folders appear and my real folders become shortcuts.
I installed Malwarebytes and detected a malware but it keeps coming back after removal.
Please see the HijackThis log below.

Hi, guys.

Some folders on my C: drive started showing as shortcuts, and won't let me access them.
Note that:
- Not on a pen drive or external drive
- Only folders, not files
- Only a few, not all of them
- Only in drive C: (I have 2 others)

I searched the internet for possible causes and solutions and found it might be a virus/malware (.lnk or variations of it) or some Windows corruption. I tried the following solutions:

1. Using the attrib /d /s -r -h -s *.* from command prompt for C:\. It did nothing. I saw blinking in Windows exlorer I had open on my 2nd monitor, but after refreshing with F5, they were still shortcuts. By the way, it took a while and all Windows files denied access, as they should.

2. Dowloaded a Malware removal program, the free McShield 3.0.5 which was supposed not only to remove the malware but to restore the shortcuts back to folders. It didn't. It said all drives were clean. I didn't want to try others.

3. I checked my file associations and my .lnk says Unknown application, as it should

4. I checked my register for a USER folder in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk wich I was supposed to delete. It was not there.

5. Made sure Show hidden files, folders and units was selected in my Windows explorer folder options. It was selected.

6. Tried changing each folder's properties (right click on it) but shows no properties (hidden, read only, system).

The problem is not so harmful,... Read more

Hi,
Recently whenever I plug in a USB into my laptop, the file folders on the USB will start to be changed to shortcuts (I plugged in 2 different USBs and both experienced the same thing). In addition, randomly named shortcuts (i.e. 77420) will also appear in the USB. I could however, still access folders that I previously created and were changed to shortcuts.
The file folders on my laptop appear unaffected, they have not been changed to shortcuts nor have there been any random shortcuts appearing. I've run Malwarebytes to do scans on both my laptop and the USBs but nothing turned up.

As such, I'd like to enquire if:
1) Are the two USBs infected with any trojan/virus?
2) Is my laptop infected?
Edit: My laptop now keeps receiving "Windows Explorer has stopped working" messages, and have difficulties connecting to the internet. It also keeps switching to use a proxy instead. My windows firewall and Symantec Endpoint protection has also been disabled and I can't turn them on anymore.

Many thanks and much appreciation for your help!
Regards,
Iris

Ohai.
Two problems.
1. A Magical desktop shortcut won't delete. It actually doesn't exist as far as part of windows is concerned. It can't link, and it just doesn't exist, except when I show my desktop. When I try to delete it, Windows says it doesn't exist.
2. New folders run and hide. On the desktop, whenever I create a new folder, it creates but doesn't show. It does exist though, because if I create a folder with the same name, it wants to replace it. So the moment I replace it, it disappears.

HiI feel a bit embarrassed posting as I have always been able to fix these annoying virus related problems through the help of Forums like this one without actually posting.OS: WinXP SP3Virus origin: USB hard drive Symptoms: Folders converted into shortcuts, CMD won't runSo after much research it appears to be related to the autorun.inf virus but repeated attempts to delete these files using the safe mode command line editor, haven't solved the problem. I should add that I have infected 2 laptops, 2 external drives and a flash drive. So I'm starting to feel a bit confused and distressed, I would really appreciate any help.....EDIT: Moved from XP forum to Am I Infected ~ Hamluis.

A:Folders converted into Shortcuts

Hi,Have you tried running MalwareBytes AntiMalware or SUPERAntispyware yet? If I'm not mistaken, the files that are involved by the autorun virus are autorun.inf, ntdelect.com and kavo.exe. Notice that it's ntdelect.com and not ntdetect.comAre you saying that you have tried deleting those files in safe mode with no success? Have you tried the recovery console yet?I found this link that might or might not be helpful, but I thought I would share it with you just in case. http://www.techgravy.net/2008/01/manual-de...orun-virus.html

this friend downloaded a program which supposed to clean his computer
it was a virus which changed all his folders to shortcuts
when I took the usb flash memory and connected it
I found all the folders ON IT are shortcuts (not the folders on my computer)
then I found my avira real time protection service stopped working (Note: my folders didn't became shortcuts)

after that the internet connection wasn't working anymore
when I restarted the computer the internet connection worked

After I used one of my friend's pen-drives, a strange thing seems to be happening every time I plug in a pen drive into my laptop. All the folders in any pen-drive I plug in get converted to shortcuts and the folder itself goes missing. When the shortcut is clicked, some .jsp seems to run but the contents of the folder are displayed. The space occupied in the pendrive also doesnt change. Sometimes, my avast says that it has blocked access to some malware website.

I dont have access to a Windows reinstall disk.

Please help me out with cleaning this malware. The dds log is below :

I seem to have picked up a virus/Trojan of some sort. I noticed it on my external hard drive first and then the flash drives. All the folders now appear as shortcuts to windows 32 but when I checked the properties when I first noticed fearful that I lost all the stored files, the used space was still there. How do I get rid of this apparent virus of sorts that hides the folders and makes access to them impossible?
Thank you very much for your time in helping me solve this issue.

Dear Tech Support Representatives,

Hello. Last week I printed out some material from my USB pendrive from an internet cafe. (I do not have my own computer at home).

Later I discovered that all the folders on my USB have been changed to shortcuts, with little arrows in the lefthand corner.

I need to retrieve the data on my USB, otherwise I could just format the pendrive.

I have already run Malwarebytes, SuperAnti-Spyware, and Junk Removal Tool. However the shortcuts on my USB pendrive are still there.

Would you someone please give me step-by-stap instructions on how to convert the folders back to normal and how to remove any other malware that may have spread to my computer's registry, etc?

I will send first my Hijack This log, the the DDS (2 logs), and then the GMER.

Thank you for your help.

Courtney

Hi,

I wonder if someone can help me.
On my Ipod, Mobile phone, USB, all my folders has now turned into a shortcut and i can not access to any of those folders. Once i click the folder i always get a message saying "The item voahesx.exe that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved". I did an Avast scan but it does not solve the problem so i used CamboFix.

This problem comes from a friend's computer, we once used his USB USB drive and he infected my and another friend's computer.

Here's my CamboFix report, i hope you can help me with the problem. I thought of formating my PC but when i'll use my external hard drive to save my folders, it will also be infected so it will not solve the problem.
