Unable to run certain programs, unable to run RootRepeal

Q: Unable to run certain programs, unable to run RootRepeal

Machine run very slow periodically.
But Task Manager says things are ok.
Have run anti virus and anti spyware many, many times. Spyware results are minor issues.
Try to run certain games - Battlefield 2 and Battlefield Heroes are main culprits, and PunkBuster bombs out. (exact message is 'pnkbstrB.exe heartbeats stopped')

Have tried to run RootRepeal several times (6+ times, clean re-boot after each try) and it bombs out (internet disconnected, Windows firewall, McAfee, Ad-Aware are all disabled)
So I do not have the requested Ark.txt file

Was trying to run some Graphic Programs a few months ago for a short assignment and that seems to be the time that I started to have issues. Have un-installed all those programs.

My computer is very slow to start (several minutes). It is quick if I do a diagnostic startup and Process SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI but not all the services and startup items. I'm sure there are several things I could remove from the startup but I'm not sure what is safe.
I will post the DDS log as I can't seem to start RootRepeal.

Hello. I have recently somehow obtained some sort of malware. Often I find internet sites redirecting, and popups appearing. I have tried to remedy the problem, however have been unsuccessful; I have tried to use Malwarebytes, Rootrepeal, HijackThis and DDS. Malwarebytes, Rootrepeal and HijackThis all close within seconds of scanning and when I try to reopen them, I get a 'Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file' message. DDs displays the startup screen, then promptly closes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having a hard time staying on any web browser (firefox/ IE/ Safari) for any significant period of time in the last week. I keep getting the message of :Blank ( browser) encountered problems and will have to be shut down. I have tried uninstalling Firefox and IE7 but now I can't even reinstall it cause the I keep getting "file corrupted" when I try downloading the program again from the originator's site. I only have safari now and can't install any program cause it reads everything as corrupted. I have used the following programs to see if I can get rid of whatever is causing this problem. Question Re: XPS 8700 with Windows 8.1.  if computer is no longer able to boot into Windows.
And Restore is not able to correct issue. 
And Refresh is unable to correct issue.
But Dell Backup and Recovery indicates no issues were found and now asks to Reinstall Operating System.
is Installation Restore/Original Image Media required to complete the Reinstallation usind Dell Backup and Recovery?
Alternatively if the Reset My PC option is used is Installation media required?

Please read every bit of this, as I try to be as detailed as possible.This started about three days ago.First, the fake programs:Windows Antivirus ProAdvanced Virus RemoverSome red X in the system tray that displays "Your computer is infected! Windows has detected spyware infection!It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you." (Don't know if this is part of one of the above fake anti-spyware programs or its own).I've had one or two of them before. (Gotta love the obvious misspellings and grammatical errors).Secondly, the Task Manager is disabled.So I go ahead and try some virus programs. None of them can get a few seconds into the scan without terminating such as MBAM and SpyNoMore (from what SpyNoMore showed while scanning, I saw the file that disabled the task manager and "Advanced Virus Remover", so if I could somehow get that to do a complete scan, I'm pretty sure it could work.)I came across a program that did, however, do a complete scan. After start up, i am unable to start most programs.
Most programs close immediately after i try to open them
The start menu doesn't allow me to select any options in it, as well as my desktop does not run any of the shortcuts on it.
I was able to open IE through forteManager(my monitor options program).
Opening and Closing windows in IE is extremely slow.

I ran hijack and it also responded extremely slowly, however i did manage to get this.

Something opened on my toolbar which I clicked to close it. My computer immediately restarted without my asking and I noticed an immediate slow down of my computer's speed. Once windows was loaded my Norton Antivirus would not load, I cannot run any usuable programs (such as hijackthis) or other anti-spywaremalware programs. Even if I had Malwarebytes I sincerly doubt that would run either. I've tried restarting in safe mode, but I could not get anything to run in that either. I don't get any error messages. After I try to run programs the computer sits for a moment and then does nothing. I am able to run windows explorer and internet explorer, but can't run firefox or chrome. I can play chess though... helpful for while i'm waiting for aid

I am a pretty experienced virus fighter, but this one has me stumped.

I read the "read these before posting rules" and would love to include the logs that procedure requests, but I truly cannot run ANY programs on my computer. A fake windows security center virus has taken root on my windows 7 and absolutley any attempt to run ANY program gets a "this is infected" pop up. The internet is likewise shutdown. I've experienced this virus before but usually it just didn't allow the running of anti-virus programs. Now even Ctrl-alt-delete is blocked. Even Dr.Web Cure It's randomly named file is blocked. I attempted running the programs this site asks to create the logs, but they were blocked as well.

So, where do I go from here? How do I run the programs neccesary to either give you guys the logs or simply remove the program? I have no idea where to go from here.

For a few days now, I am unable to run several programs, seemingly unrelated to each other.

Affected programs include the Mechwarrior Online beta, TEamspeak, Warhammer 40k:Space Marine, and others, none of which are related to each other. Furthermore, I no longer have access to certain folders, such as ProgramData under C://.

The programs launch, then immediately crash with no error message.
Operating system is windows XP, MBAM and Avast have both detected no problems on scans. This is the administrator account on the computer.

This PC is a Dell XPS 730, dual nVidia 9800gt, no active RAID, Soundblaster XFi card, 4GB. Recently I have had some issues with the PC including:CD autorun not working - fixed by stopping the PowerDVD startup.VERY slow bootup (15 minutes) - fixed by uninstalling Zonealarm (on two XP machines)And now I get an NVIDIA RAID SERVICE error when the PC starts even though I'm not using any RAID. I have read that this service can be disabled through msconfig but have not done so yet.The real problem is that when the PC fully boots I am unable to run any programs including the Windows Task Manager. Sometime I can quickly start an application if I do it before the PC is fully booted and before I get the NVIDIA RAID error but I'm not sure they're connected. I have the Task Manager running now. I can do things like open windows explorer though. If I attempt to run anything it seems to begin the startup process but never starts and quickly disappears from the task manager.

I am trying to help a friend get his computer running. He claims he clicked on a video that said something like "wait till you see this..." the video started and then the screen went blank and the computer rebooted. After the reboot, nothing except Windows system apps work. We cannot run IE, Firefox, Malwarebytes, AVG, or any other scanner or internet type program. With Task Manager up, I can sometimes see the program start and then freeze and then go away. I see the same behavior in Safe Mode. I suspect something is running that is killing all apps other than windows system apps.

Note: all downloads are on another computer and transferred to the computer by a flash drive

What we have tried so far:
- downloaded all versions of the .exe registry update files, they all seem to run.
- downloaded all versions of rkill I could find. These do not seem to run at all.
- have tried System Restore to go back to a point prior to the problem
- in preparation for this i followed the instructions in the "Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Tools and ..." document. I was unable to run either dds.scr (did nothing) or gmer.exe (64 bit OS).

I have attached to jpg files of screen prints of the processes I see running in Task Manager.

This is a Windows 7 Professional 64-bit OS.

I recently had the spysheriff spyware but got it to stop popping up and was able to get my wallpaper back to normal but some of the programs I have on the computer (AOL, Photoshop are a few) wont start up. Photoshop will boot up but then close and AOL will start but wont connect.

I installed three "legacy" programs which will now neither run nor uninstall.

One is Adobe Air, one is Astraslim (drivers for my elderly scanner) and one is DBXconv, which I hoped would capture all the old emails from my old XP machine.
Seems almost as if they are "half" installed, and unable to complete?

Tried everything I know to get these off - even the hitherto failsafe Revo, but I am still stuck with them.
Anyone any ideas, please?

Have you tried running a System Restore point to just before you installed the programs ?

About a month ago I bought a Dell Inspiron 1564with Windows 7. I have not been able to download any programs except Itunes, which is very slow. For example it starts to download Skype and gets about halfway through then a message pops up saying it cannot download. It has done the same with other programs and I just can't seem to fix it. I have tried resetting my internet settings, but that did not help either.

Can someone please help me, I have no other way of fixing this.

I am having trouble installing new programs. The error message is "windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have appropriate permission to access item". I have administrator privileges, try to install as administrator. I checked the security under properties and checked off Run as Administrator. I can't relate it to anything that I have installed. The only thing new is Windows Update and I haven't checked the reasons for the updates. I may try system restore.

Open a CMD prompt as administrator (go to start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select "run as administrator") at the prompt type:-

I have recently purchased a PC with XP and Microsoft Works Suite Pre-Installed.

However, I now want to install Office XP as well as other new software. Unfortunately, whenever I insert the CD, it autoruns and invites me to install the software.

All goes well until it asked for the software key. At this point the installation program closes down without and errors. Sometimes I am able to type a few charactors in, other times it closes down as soon as the dialigue box appears.

Once it closed down, displaying the Windows Task Manager also suggests that the installtion program is not running.

Any ideas?

Good Morning,
A friend called me the other night. He was unable to open any programs on his PC. Gets a message like:

The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
Click help for more information
error code 0x80070424".

I picked it up from him and tried to install Anti Malwarebytes. It would not finish the install. It would error. Previous to this, he thought he was downloading 7-zip, but when installing, it starting installing other browser Tool Bars and other programs. I remove the installed programs using Add/Remove program but I think something is still there and causing the problems today.

Hi. I downloaded some type of program that installed the ask toolbar and msa.exe I managed to delete the b.exe and msa.exe; however my machine is still acting up. I cannot install any program and my AVG is NOT picking up anything. Whenever I go to search the web in firefox in the google search bar websites come up when I click on the link I searched for (for example, I searched for Chipoltle and when I clicked on the link it went to some webpage that offered insurance...wtf).

I don;t want to install Norton, because I'm not confident that Norton will pick up and fix what is wrong. Can someone help me? Remember, I cannot install programs; otherwise I get an error box that says I do not have permission (but I do).

Ok, I broke down and ran Norton. It found a couple trojans and removed them; however my computer is still acting funny. I get an error when I try to execute any program. I want to run Spy Bot Search and Destroy to see if Norton missed any Malware or Spyware. The error message is a screen cap that is attached.

Hi everyone. I need some help ASAP!I have been unable to get ANY windows updates, Defender pro 2009 anti virus updates, or Malwarebytes updates. I think I definitely have some kind of viral issue because not only am I not able to get updates, I also can not access the websites themselves to do any form of manual updates. I also am in some case being redirected to random web pages when I do a google search. My compute also seems to be running slower....When I go into my virus update I get a "Error 403", When I go to update Malwarebytes I get a "Error 732"... When I try to manually download microsoft updates I get to the download page and click "download" I am redirected to a "Page not found" error. UPDATE; I was able to find a manual update for the most current data base for Malwarebytes and am in the process of scanning right now. Problem started earlier tonight. I clicked accept or okay on something that I think was a Windows Update (Honestly, at this point, I'm unsure of what it is I really clicked. I know that's stupid of me to click accept or ok on something I wasn't paying attention to, but it's too late now.) and my computer completely restarted. When it came back up, I attempted to get back on Skype, Windows Live Messenger, and Mozilla Firefox. None of them would open. I clicked on the icons as well as the links in my start menu. Although, on the start menus, it showed as if I was still signed into those programs. My mouse pointer on the screen gave me a little circle as if it were loading, but nothing happened. Suddenly, I got a blue screen with something that said "Crash" and "Dump" in it. I panicked. When it finally restarted my computer again, I still cannot access any programs, including my anti virus. I can get into Pain, My Documents, and such, but nothing else really.

I tried restoring to three days before, but the problem followed me. It didn't help at all.
I also tried Safe Mode, nothing would work there either.

I am using a separate computer to access this website.

I am using Windows 7

Please help?!?

It looks like you may have a virus
You need to get into MSCONFIG as soon as you are able to to disable everything in startup and services (leave microsoft services running) and restart the PC and see if it is still slow
Once started with check in MSCONFIG to see what programs start and look for unusual programs, they sometimes have letters and numbers in the name

I'm having an issue with my laptop. I can seem to only run Firefox and Adobe. Any other programs I try to run, such as Internet Explorer or Camtasia, the programs won't run and close automatically. I also occassionally get the blue screen of death if I try to run a program like Camtasia and it won't run.

So I left my computer on for the night, and this morning I come to my computer to see that I can't launch any programs at all, and a new icon on my desktop labeled Windows Antivirus Pro.

Everytime I do try to launch something, a command prompt window blinks for a split second which I have been able to make out to say: Program is too big to fit in memory.

I tried restarting, and noticed that just after login, a bunch of command prompts blinking again with desot.exe as their title, as well as a process called svchast.exe in my task manager, note the 'a' where there should be an 'o'.

I deleted Windows Antivirus Pro, and stopped the svchast.exe process, but couldn't delete the desot.exe as it claimed it was being used by another program. I still can't launch any programs because of "not having enough ram" but that is a total lie made by the virus, as I have been able to get on the internet by going to Start > Run > http://www.google.com, whereas the actual firefox.exe "is too big to fit."

Unfortunately I'm unable to post a HJThis log as...well...I can't launch it lol.

Any help and experience with this problem is greatly appreciated.

In safe made I am unable to run Malwarebytes or HiJack this. When I open Malwarebytes I am redirected to 'choose the program you want to use to open this file.' When I open HiJack this I am given the dialogue box 'application not found'.

I just received a new laptop about 2-3 weeks ago, and things have been working great up until yesterday. Usually I am at my mother's house, but I was staying at my dad's for the weekend so I took the computer with me. When I turned it on, I noticed that my facial recognition program hadn't started (the place where it usually is was blank). I didn't think much of it until the computer finished loading everything; I tried to open Google Chrome and it wasn't opening. I tried to open all my desktop icons and that didn't work either. The computer did not give me any error messages. The programs were not in the task manager, not even in the processes list. At first I tried running the system file checker, and it was not able to fix anything. After that, I booted in safe mode and tried to open them and it worked. I logged off and restarted in normal mode and everything was fine. But today, I restarted and I wasn't able to open anything again. So I tried what I did yesterday and it worked. So basically I have to boot in safe mode then in normal mode for anything to work.

Hi,
Unsure if this is in the right place! Apologies in advance.

Currently using Windows Vista.

If i try to run anything (Internet, games, any software) I get a blue screen for about 5 seconds and then my computer reboots.

All I've managed to gain from it is "driver irql not less or equal"

Have tried running MBAM in safe mode but it refuses to start.

This has only just come in the last 12 hours

Initially, our problem starting with Internet Explorer redirecting to various sites.
Since I'm a novice user, my teenage son went on your site downloaded several virus, malware removeal apps. He ran Stinger and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Several infections were cleared. But now, when we are unable to open programs. When trying to open itunes or microsoft office, the message applicaiton not found is displayed.
If I go into Control Panel, select Add/Remove programs, the message c:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe "Application not found"
Also, on the taskbar, in the lower right-hand side, the Windows Security Alert symbol is displayed.
Today, I ran Stinger and and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and no infections were found.

I was unable to launch the Defogger.exe file under Normal boot mode. I get a screen that states 'Open with' and a list of appplications to choose.

All the files attached were run under Safe Mode.

I updated to windows 8.1 and tried to run a program, Driver Booster (IOBit), and was unable to. It changed the cursor to a cursor w/ loading circle then kept it like that. It is still spinning as I type this. It requires admin privileges if that matters at all..

Hi, I'm unable to to minimize, maximize and close out programs with my mouse and the touch pad. The only way I can close anything out is by alt-control-delete and going into the task manager to end the program(s).

I am using FireFox and have been for quite some time and this has never been a problem. Can this be part of the issue?

On another of my systems experiencing Popup problems, I attempted to install the basic diagnostic tools (HijackThis, Ad-aware, Ewido and Spybot S&D) as well as use the Pandasoftware scanner to analyze my system. HijackThis and Ad-aware install ok, because they are standalone executables. Spybot registers itself with the registry and so fails. Additional Information:

Installation of software from CD Rom also fails. When I tried to load the game 'Fable' I received the following:

"1607: Unable to install InstallShield Scripting Runtime."

I followed some instructional advice on fixing this problem centered around verifying write access to the Windows\Installer directory. With Hidden files and System files visible when I launch the 'Preferences' alert box the Security Tab does not exist. Only General, Sharing and Customize are visible.

The user had Administrator Rights on the system (and has installed many a program previously).

ewido flagged the Watch(something) virus twice when using the toolbar. The problem was quarantined by ewido.

Mmk.. So I had a vundo infection and I got rid of all infections on my computer thanks to the HJT forum. Anyway, any programs installed prior to the attack date, 3 days ago, I cannot uninstall, they are all considered "Invalid Programs", I have no clue why, and quite frankly I do not want to reinstall all those programs, most of them are windows updates. So I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some help. .Thanks in advance!Oh and I have Windows Xp Professional and I use TuneUP Utilities 2008 to normally fix my problems, and well it just didn't pick up anything at all.

When ever I try to open a program I get: UserAccountControlSettings.exe - Bad Image (X) C:\Windows\system32\RpcRtRemote.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation

with ANY software, you need to check and verify that it will function on / with the os you are attempting to install it on - and the easiest way to do this is to go to that software's site and check
some older software , [that is no longer being updated - company went out of business - someone else bought it - whatever] - will have no newer versions, BUT, it can usually be ran in 'virtual mode'
and some software will have a newer version that can be downloaded, installed and ran direct

Hey everone,
I have a rather large problem. I've started using my laptop again now, but the thing is I can't use any program that connects to the internet besides a web browser (Firefox & IE work, but Chrome doesn't). I've had problems on this computer before doing LAN with games, but nothing like this. For example, I can't use programs that download using a download manager (such as AVG free antivirus) and I can't use the iTunes store, chat programs, FTP clients, you name it. I've recently formatted this computer, but it's been sitting around for a whlie now. Anyone have any suggestions?

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Make and exact model and hardware version of any other network equipment, like a repeater, a booster, hi-gain antenna, etc.
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.


Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.


Have you tried to do a system restore to before the problem occurred?
If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
For wireless connection issues, have you removed all the stored wireless network profiles and then searched for the network?
For wireless laptops, have you made SURE the wireless switch is on?
For wired connection issues, have you booted in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that changes the symptoms?

Every program I attempt to uninstall gives me an error message, the most common being "Cannot open install.log" Obviously something has gone wrong - what to do? Running XP

It sounds like you may have used some "cleaner" that removed all your log files as unnecessary. The uninstallers for many applications use the information contained in the install logs to reverse the installation process.

The best way to remedy this is to reinstall an application that you want to remove in order to create a new install.log. Then uninstall it.

Hi Tech support,

I am having trouble with my laptop. I bought a reconditioned Fujitsu Siemens laptop about three days ago, it's a Vista machine which I've never had before and since yesterday it has been refusing to install anything on the system. I can download the files but when it comes to actually running the installer nothing happens.

I've tried downloading the files to desktop or somewhere visual but the icon will flash up momentarily once the download has finished then disappear completely.

Please can you help with this problem as it's preventing me from downloading and receiving any of my e mail attachments for work and since I bought this because my new job has me on the move all over the place it is going to be completely useless unless I can get this sorted.

Please do the following:

1 - note the time on the system clock
2 - attempt to install a program (any program will do)
3 - check in the Event Viewer to see if there are any messages relating to the attempt at installation. Under the Windows logs, check both the Application log file and the System log file (use the time that you noted in Step 1 to narrow down the amount of stuff that you've gotta search through).

Also, in the View menu, enable the "Show Analytic and Debug logs"
Then open the Applications and Services logs...Microsoft...Windows...Diagnostics-Performance logs.
Check these logs for errors (in most systems only the Operational log will be Enabled. The Diagnostic and Diagnostic-Loopback logs can be Enabled (by right clicking) if you want to.

What happens if you rename the installer from .exe to .cmd - and then try to install it?

I?m unable to run almost all of the programs on my laptop. I get the following error message:

?This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel?

I can open some programs, such as WORD or Publisher if I click on a saved document. But these programs do not open if I click on the taskbar, desktop icon, or program startup icon.

I cannot open or run System Restore, even in safe mode. It will start in safe mode, but once it gets to the point in the process where it reboots the computer I get a message that the computer is unable to open rstu.exe (or whatever the system restore file is called).

I?m running XP. Here?s what I?ve tried so far:

? Virus scan: clean
? Ad-Aware Pro SE scan: clean
? Re-set folder associations to default in Control Panel Folder Options
? Reinstall MS Office
? MS Knowledge base

I?m out of ideas. Any suggestions on what to do besides wipe out the hard drive and do a clean reinstall of Windows XP and start from scratch?

Hello,

I'm haveing some problems updateing my Virus programs I've uninstalled and tried reinstalling multiple Virus programs on my computer. First I was useing Panda Antivirus about a week ago I noticed my internet (10meg) cable connection was running REALLY slow, web pages takeing forever to load etc. I called my cable company and they let me know that my upload was increadably high and that is a big indication of a viurs intrusion, this along with panda not being able to update as I got a notice on Windows security warning. I attempted to uninstall panda and downloaded AVG which was unable to install becuase it could not detect internet connection...but I am able to access the internet. After trying and trying differnt programs I was able to get one to install but not update as again they can't access the internet to update. It was suggested to me to restore to another time on my computer which I did and my internet as again come back to full speed, but I still can't get an antivirus program to install or update. As well I keep getting these errors when I restart my computer ApVxdwin.exe error and Inicio.exe error. I have attempted to stop this on MSconfig. But still get these errors. First I KNOW I HAVE A VIRUS OR MALWARE problem but am unsure as to how to find and elimenate the problem anything you can help me with I have downloaded and run Highjackthis and have a log ready, as well I have downloaded and installed adware but am unable to update that ...
