Laptop turns off when unplugged (new battery)

Q: Laptop turns off when unplugged (new battery)

Whenever I unplug my computer from its charging cord it automatically turns off. I was having this problem before, but replaced the battery with a brand new one. It was working fine and I broke in the battery by charging and discharging it fully for the first 3 cycles and the laptop was working well without power for the past week since I got it, other than taking a minute or so to respond to me pushing the power on button before working when it was not connected to the cord. Now this morning it switches off whenever I unplug it even though the battery says it is at 100% charge and still charging. But, the light on the side of my power port is on red/orange when I have it plugged in, but only when it's lid is closed and it is fully booted up. I checked on other forum answers and tried changing to different power saving plans and even switching all options to 'never' but nothing has worked.I also looked at the pins underneath my laptop where my battery should go to see if they are damaged. Two of them are on a different angle to the rest but I think this is how the laptop was built anyway? I dont want to move them incase it just makes the situation worse. What should I try next? I would like this fixed ASAP as I need this laptop for school and often don't have access to a power plug in class. Thankyou.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My Acer Aspire V laptop (about a year old) reports to be 75% charged.

However, beginning today out of the blue, it will not boot up unless it is plugged in. When I get to Windows, it says "plugged in, not charging". Moreover, if I unplug the power cord, it will completely shut off.

What's going on?

A:Laptop Turns Off When Unplugged

Most likely the battery is dead and needs replaced.

However double check the physical contacts between the laptop and the battery, make sure they are clean.

Less than a year ago I got a new HP G60 120-us notebook and I've experienced a lot of problems with it. At one point I even had to reset the hard drive because it was running too slow.

First off, I've been having problems with overheating. I believe this is due to the lithium batter, but the buttom of my laptop gets exremely hot. I mean, it gets so hot that it burns my finger when i feel it. Its not like I have it on a rug or carpet, this is on a wooden desk that is completely flat. Normally this wouldn't be too much of a problem for me, but I can tell that the performance drops down when it gets so hot. I have to put something underneath my laptop to keep it ventilated just to keep it from getting so hot.

Thats not the only problem. Recently, it started powering off whenever it gets unplugged. Even for just a few moments like when I want to move to a different part of the house. It's not like I'm shaking it or anything, on the contrary, I keep it as still as possible when I'm carrying it. Yes the battery is full, I'm not that dumb. But even with the battery full, it will turn off without warning usually within a minute, sometimes even in 5 seconds.

Are these common problems with this model? Should I send it in to be repaired?

A:New laptop turns off when unplugged.

sounds like you should replace the battery. it should not get so hot it burns you .and its not holding a charge.

Hello everyone, I've had many problems with my laptop lately and this time it's quite significant. I discovered today that my laptop completely shuts off when unplugged. I then plugged it in and tried again. It turned on. Removing the plug while the computer was still on, once again instantly shuts it off. Several more retries and it's pretty clear I cannot use my computer unless it is plugged in. I don't know if this is just an issue of a faulty battery, or if something else is at work, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice. Mind you, the laptop is only 3 months old.

I have an XPS13 that I wanted to get a spare power adapter for.  I purchased a used genuine Dell JT9DM on eBay.  Same model number as the original adapter.  If I plug the new adapter into the laptop and into the wall it charges the laptop.  If I remove the power connector from the laptop the green light on the power adapter goes out and will not turn back on unless you unplug it from the wall and then plug it back in.  The power adapter that came with the laptop does not do this, the green light stays on regardless of being connected to the laptop.
I figured the adapter I got on eBay was defective and purchased another.  It does the exact same thing.  So while I can charge the laptop battery with the two adapters, I have to unplug them from the wall every time I connect the adapter back into the laptop.  Is there some way to re-program the adapter to stay on all the time?

A:Power adapter turns itself off when unplugged from the laptop

What is the exact system model? Have you purchased the adapter as designed for your region?
There are certain adapters that are designed specifically based on the region / country.
Kindly advise the exact system model and country you reside in and a picture of the adapter pins, so we could review them.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.

My Laptop screen had been working perfectly for months. Then out of the blue It started to get washed out white.
I do not know how long this has been happening or when it started but I just noticed it recently on a trip.
I use my Acer Laptop as a work PC so it's generally plugged into a Monitor. I was traveling & I brought it
with me. I turned it on & all seemed normal. The 4 flying Win7 colors did there dance as the system started to boot up.
Then I'd see the "Login" screen for a second or 2 then Bam, the screen went white out of nowhere! I thought I was the

all the way forward I could make out the Login screen icon & window. I typed my password & it continued to boot up.
Now my desktop was normal with all the colors correct. I figured it was a weird glitch, a 1 time thing. After about
20-30 second the screen when white again! Now there was no way to get it back to normal. I could see everything on my
desktop in the faded white washed out background. I ended up doing emails in that condition. it sucked.
-I've tried rebooting 5x times. Same thing happens
-I've check & installed all latest Windows Updates.
-I did Virus & malware scan 2x with nothing dangerous found.
-I checked to see if my brightness level was somehow set all the way up. Nope.

It never leaves my desk and I just fixed it from a hard drive problem. It has 92% battery, I don't want to waste money for it, since I just fixed it. And when I search up the problem it says something about a power mode but it doesn't even show that. I'm not sure if other people have this problem but I am pretty mad. And no I never dropped it. A:Ideapad 300-15isk Battery fully charged, but laptop shuts down when unplugged

Hi Raouaa, Please use Lenovo Settings to confirm the status of the battery, from your description of the issue it seems that this is a defective battery. Lenovo Settings should show you that the battery status is destroyed, if this is the case I would recommend getting in touch with Lenovo Warranty Support and getting the battery replaced if the unit is still under warranty. You can get in touch by clicking on the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page under Support.Cheers,

So HP laptops have a tendency of overheating... and when they do, they power off immediately. This is NOT that issue. When I'm working solely on my battery (no AC charger) My laptop will turn off in maybe 45 minutes... I keep an eye on the battery level and it never drops to below 20% when this occurs. The laptop isn't burning hot and no error/warning messages are displayed (and no beeps).... Just poof power off. Ive downloaded the newest HP support assistant and ran the battery test and it said it was fine.I've tried to the manual calibration (since Support assistant isn't giving me the option to calibrate it) where I do the diagnostic logic (F2) and run the Hard Drive test on Battery until the laptop dies... Plugged in the charger and restarted.. what do you know, battery was at 40%... on the battery battery level button is showing half-charge.... So what do I do when the laptop is saying battery is good - not replace... How do I force that calibration? Something is wrong in that the power is dying half-way through the power cycle. Apprecaite any advice!

My laptop keeps turning itself of when it is on battery. It lasts about 20 minutes, but is getting shorter everytime.

The battery is not running out- when I turn it back on it has 50% charge normally.

It turns off as if it has no power- no warning, and when I turn it back on it reloads and everything is new, with documents and Internet sessions needing restoring.

How can I fix this? I don't think it is the battery, as it has charge when I turn it back on, and it only has 20% wear.

A:Laptop Randomly Turns Off When In Battery

Welcome to TSG!!

If it's truly random, it won't be the Power Management settings. Some laptops have a utility that enables you to "calibrate" your battery. It will fully charge, then fully discharge the battery, perhaps more than one cycle, to allow the laptop to "learn" the battery's capabilities and characteristics. Check and see if you can find such an app. Different manufacturers will give it different names. Also, check their Web site to see if it is a separate download.

1. Laptop turns off without any warning, when the battery is low. There is no "low battery" indicator or anything of that sort. The laptop just turns off. This has been happening for over one and a half months now.2. The battery also lasts lesser time than what the battery indicator indicates (MUCH lesser). It has been a little over 2 years now since I purchased this laptop. Ofcourse it depends on my usage. But the battery indicator should suggest reasonably sensible "lasting" time right?

I don't know that much about hardware, but is there maybe some setting thats messed up. Such as a setting that tells windows to switch to battery, or try to switch to battery, because windows reads the battery just fine.

Hello Everyone.I bought a Lenovo y40-70 computer in early January and so far I've really loved it. But just the other day, I started having some strange issues that I'm frankly at a loss to solve. It's progressed in several stages, and I'm a little concerned for my laptop. I wanted to know if anyone had any fixes/ suggestions: 1- First thing I noticed was that the battery icon would not show the battery 'filling' up while it was plugged in. I remember reading that the battery icon doesn't always refresh, and as the battery said it was charging, I didn't worry. 2- Again, yesterday. After using my computer without the charger for some time, I plugged it in to work. It was plugged in for a good two hours, and yet the battery continued to read at 17%. It wasn't going up. 3- I unplugged my computer to check on the battery status. My entire computer shut down (Instant off, black screen, fans stopped etc). Turned it on while it was still unplugged to watch it reboot just fine. Battery was still at 17% 4- Repeated the process of plugging/unplugging the computer to find that the computer shut off everytime. The battery did wind up filling to 94%, so it did charge. I finished up my work for the day and went to bed. 5- Tried to start my laptop, unplugged, today while I was out. It would not turn on, despite the fact that I know it had a full battery before I put it away. I then plugged it in and tried again. It turned on, displaying a near full battery. Removing... A:Y40-70, turns off when unplugged.

Hi ritzbitz,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Can you try to Manually resetting  the battery out.
Boot the System into BIOS by hitting F2 when you power ON the computer.
Now stay in BIOS and let the computer run with Only the Battery in that mode.
Let the computer turn OFF By itself due to battery power loss.
BIOS Does not have any feature to turn off the system on minimal charge but It will be OFF once it is Fully Drained.
Now Let the computer OFF and charge the computer with the AC adapter for 30 Mins.
Power ON the computer and Let it charge to a 100% then Observe if that resolves the Issue.
Hope this helps

Hi, I have recently purchase (5 days ago) a HP Envy 15-J151SA, but its started to play up already. I had used my laptop yesterday at uni and had run the battery down to about 15%, so I plugged the power pack in as normal and charged the laptop to 100%. When I came to unplug the charger, the laptop just instantly turned off without warning. I thought this was very odd until I tried to turn the laptop back on to no response at all, no lights, no flashing, no nothing. Hey there,
I've been using my upgraded Inpiron 17R SE happily for a couple of years by now. I've even gone as far as buying an 128GB SSD to futureproof it. This is the only drive - besides the DVD drive - currently present in the laptop. However I've had an issue for quite a while:
Whenever I try to boot the Laptop only using the Battery (even fully charged) it Posts then loads Windows and turns of just before the Login-Screen (I can't see it). When I proceed to turn it back on, it Posts then beeps and says that there is a Real Time Clock Error and gives me the option to proceed booting or to enter Setup.
This however doesn't occur when using the Power-Brick. Moreover it isn't always the case. Sometimes the Laptop boots and works fine just using the battery, but then upon opening a Programm (while under battery-power) it shuts of and gives the same error message again. If it decides to work the battery still lasts for 2-2.5 hours.
I'm really confused to what the problem is. It could be a power delivery problem, but it's still the original battery and laptop with only the HDD changed to a SSD.
I'm aware of it being a rather old machine, but selling it is my only hope for getting a new laptop for college, but I can't sell it in this state.
I'm at a lost and really really sad because of this issue. I'm sorry for any typos or grammar mistakes, I'm a non native english speaker.

Not the usual "Windows turning off" sequence, but an immediate blackout with no feedback. When I turn the computer back on, I see that Battery 2 is at 0% and Battery 1 is now in use. It does seem to be a problem in the power management, no? Thank you,Fred

A:My computer turns off immediately when Battery 2 reaches 0%, even if Battery 1 is 100%

Sounds like power management or battery reporting status wrong.  Are you still under warranty? If yes, call support first.  Can you get (borrow) another battery to try?

So I have a yoga 730 and ive only had it for like 3 months and suddenly my battery started to have problems. First it started to discharge really fast and then it just turned off while on like 50 percent. Now it always shows 100% but dies the second i unplug it. I called Lenovo and they said i had to calibrate the battery with one key optimizer, but that just doesnt work, it never showed me a status bar or something, and never ''finished'' calibrating (i think the program is not working). They also said that i dont have international warranty, so thats a problem. Is there another way i can calibrate the battery? Is there a way that i can make my warranty international?Thank you.

Is it normal for these laptops to still draw a noticeable amount of battery power when shut off?  I notice that when I turn it off for travel that a few percent is lost when I turn it back on a few hours later.  I turned it off around 1:30 pm yesterday afternoon (unplugged) and when I turned it on at 7:30 am this morning it was charging, starting at 93% (7% loss).  Do I have a setting not enabled to prevent it from eating battery when turned off?  What devices still draw that much power when turned off?

I've noticed that on my cousin's laptop, whenever he unplugs to move it around, a warning appears above the battery icon warning him the power cord was disconnected, and another warning when he reconnects it. I get a similar warning when I connect/disconnect my headphones or mic from the jack.

Is that power cord connected/disconnected warning a feature that can be turned on, or is it specific to certain brands of computers?

Please note that if I don't want to download third party applications for this. I only want to know if it's a feature that can be turned on, and if so, how to turn it on.

Thank you for your time.

A:Battery Plugged/Unplugged Notice

On my Think Pad it is a battery icon that changes. It beeps when the state changes and pops up the Power options window when power plug is inserted.

Hello, I have a question reagarding battery. I want to know that when my device full charged then its stopped charging? and its coverted on direct power? or it still charging which is not good for my battery? What should I do when my HP Evny device fully charged? Should I do it unpluged or not? Thank you.

A:Fully Charged Battery should be unplugged or not?

The computer is doing it right. When battery is completly charged, there is no need used the charge from it and then charge again. Hence once the battery is completly charged, the power is used from adator. You can leave the adaptor plugged in and continue working or if you want to take hte computer around then goahead and use the cheage from battery.

Whenever my Y40 is unplugged, the computer shows the battery to be at 100% and never decreases. A few minutes later the computer will turn itself off and won't turn back on. When I plug it back in and turn it on, it shows the battery is very low and charging normally, then shortly thereafter displays 100% fully charged (it's not). I've tried system restore and the following, which I've seen posted in several places: "First of all, shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter, remove the battery, and then hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Now, plug in the AC Adapter without the battery inserted, start the notebook, open windows Control Panel, open Device Manager, expand the entry for Batteries, right click on and the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery and select Uninstall - do not uninstall anything else here. When the uninstall is complete, shut the notebook down, unplug the AC Adapter, re-insert the battery and then start the notebook on just the battery. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver - leave Windows running for a few minutes and see if the charge level decreases as it should." I don't know where to go from here. I bought the computer late last year and these issues suddenly started recently. I installed Start Is Back recently, but the system restore from beforehand didn't solve the issue. I'm running Windows 8.1 and everything seems to be up to date. Any advice?

A:When unplugged, battery always reads 100 percent, ...

hi dancarpenter,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Can you try draining the Power in BIOS Menu. (In BIOS mode, Windows cannot control the power and the battery will be drained and reset its reading)
Unplug the AC adapter and turn off the computer
Now Turn it back on and start hitting F2, This will boot the computer in BIOS mode.
While in BIOS, Let the computer sit in this mode until it turn off by itself due to power loss of battery.
Now that the battery is drained.
Charge it back up till 100% and test it if it will be resolved
Hope this helps

Hello, I got a 730 yoga a few weeks ago for college. I only used it at home and occasionally at the library, always hooked up to a charger, up until last week when I arrived on campus. Recently, its problems when unplugged have made this laptop nearly unbearable to use. It has terrible performance relative to being plugged in despite having a battery life of 3 hours at most, with merely switching desktops and typing on onenote taking ages and it barely being able to survive for the duration of a few back-to-back afternoon classes. When I tried to increase the performance by making the minimum CPU power from 5% to 100%, there was a slight increase in performance, but still far behind performance whilst charging. This laptop is advertised as having an 11.5 hour maximum battery life, but in practice it barely lasts a fourth of that, and slugglishly so to boot. There is no clear damage to the computer and these problems have existed for as long as I've had it, so I assume that there is something up with the software. I'd like help ASAP. I wouldn't want a mere hardware issue to mess up my college experience.

Dear Community,We bought the abvoe laptop in Nov '18 and it has been working perfectly until recently Even though it shows a 100% charged battery, if it is not plugged in, it dies off instantly. Once it happens there no sign on the external part of the computer (not even a orange blinking) that there would be any juice in the battery. Could that be a software issue (energy manager) or rather a hardware topic (battery is defective) Thank you very much in advance for your advices
