T460 touchpad unresponsive when Ethernet cable plu...

Q: T460 touchpad unresponsive when Ethernet cable plu...

Hello, I've bought a brand new T460 ThinkPad about 10 days ago, and I'm noticing that when I plug in an Ethernet cable, the touchpad becomes unresponsive: some clicks and taps are missed, movement is slow and and occasionally temporarily stuck. The touchpad comes to life again immediately once the Ethernet cable is unplugged. The trackpoint and trackpoint buttons above the touchpad are unaffected, only the touchpad starts to misbehave. This happens both on Windows and Linux, so it's not an OS-specific issue. Moreover, I've checked to see if I'm running the latest BIOS version, and I am. And there are no issues when using the wireless adapter, but one of the reasons I've bought a ThinkPad was that it has an Ethernet port, so not being able to use it would be extremely dissapointing. I've checked to see if there are IRQ conflicts for the touchpad, but could find none. The problem happens both when the computer is plugged in and when it's running on battery only. I've also tried two different cables in the same router, each in a different router port, and the problem persisted. I am using the latest Windows 7 drivers directly from the Lenovo website, and Arch Linux with kernel 4.4.5 - the Ethernet adapter is seen as: [ 2.751703] e1000e: Intel(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - 3.2.6-k[ 2.751705] e1000e: Copyright(c) 1999 - 2015 Intel Corporation. Should I expect this to be fixed with a BIOS update or should I contact warranty? Living with it is unacceptable.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Tried an external USB mouse, it had no issues with Ethernet plugged in. So, the trackpoint works, an external USB mouse works, but the touchpad loses sensitivity and becomes choppy and occasionally unresponsive.

So if you thought your new shiny Yoga had a bad touchpad, it may not be the touchpad at all! My Yoga 720 15.6 was acting really strange where every so often using the touchpad wouldnt work, and trying to use the keyboard wouldnt work at all. I first thought it was a touchpad issue but realized that this is a system wide issue. Something is causing Windows to start hitching. I turned off Adaptive Brightness in Power settings and the problem has gone away! I had a hunch it was this when I noticed the adaptive brightness was doing its job of gradually changing the brightness but looked like it was lagging while it was dimming/brightening itself. Lenovo Support: Please address this problem through any channels necessary because I want Adaptive Brightness but right now I have to have it disabled in order to use Windows without any hitches.

Hi all, I recently got my touchpad and keyboard replaced through a lenovo service center. The touchpad is working fine but the driver is not installed so it doesn't register any scrolling movement or let me access touchpad settings.  But i'm having trouble accessing the touchpad settings. The touchpad setting used to be under control panel->mouse settings tab, but now it's not there anymore. Also, underthe device manager, it doesn't show up. I tried installing a driver for it through the lenovo support page but i'm not having any success. Has anyone experienced this?

Does the T460 touchpad support the full range of Windows 10 gestures either natively or via the Lenovo or other 3rd party(Synaptics perhaps) software? It doesn't have Precision touchpad drivers so I'm assuing it doesn't natively support Windows 10 gestures but apparetly the touchpad is perfectly capable of the full range of gestures.

When I input something with my keyboard, the touchpad/trackpoint doesn't accept any clicking for about ~0.5 seconds. Its a small delay but it is driving me insane. T460 laptop, Synaptics Clickpad V1.1 Things I've tried:-  Reinstalling drivers, and restarting laptop. Nothing changed.-  Turned palm rejection to minimum. This fixes an earlier problem where the mouse would stop moving with keyboard presses, but it doesn't affect the clicking delay.-  Went into the registry editor, found 'synaptics' under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE' but couldn't find any variables that indicate a delay after keyboard presses. I'd really appreciate any help with this. ~3 hours of googling isn't helping me. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

A week ago, my computer suddenly could not connect to the internet. I was using a cable directly connected to the cable modem.

Since then, I've tried:

1) Added a WiFi router connected to the cable modem. Tried using the WiFi card built in to the computer. It connects but reports "limited access", and there is no connection to the internet, and I can't access the router itself.

2) Bought a new Ethernet card, installed the drivers that came with it. I've tried it connected through the WiFi router's hard ports and directly to the modem. Hard resets (power cycling off 2 minutes) on the modem each time and still no connection.

3) In device manager, both Ethernet cards show as "working normally" with no errors. So does the WiFi card.

4) ipconfig shows only "tunneling" devices with media disconnected.

5) I've uninstalled and re-installed the drivers for the on-baord Ethernet, the WiFi card, and the new Ethernet card.

After reading some other posts, I captured the output from ipconfig and several netsh commands. I've attached them to this post. The files starting with netsh are basically the command entered with underscores replacing the spaces from the commands used to generate them.

I also borrowed another computer. It connects both directly through the cable modem, and using the Ethernet ports on the router. It doesn't have WiFi, so I couldn't test that method of access. It can also connect to and c... Read more

Stupid me...I was walking away from my Lenovo y570 and the ethernet cable got caught up around my leg, so I yanked it out of the PC. The metal thingy was busted so I pushed it back and put it in place with a pair of toothpicks. However, the ethernet cable goes out just enough to disconnect me. Can I buy only that metal part, if that's in fact the issue why my cable goes out just a little? I saw just a litle plastic thing that broke off too, is that the thing that keeps the cable locked (can I improvise and how)?My job is on the internet, so it brings the food on my table, please dear people, tell me if there's anything I can do? It does not recognize that it is plugged into the network/internet via an ethernet cable. The computer has a Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet adapter which appears to be detected and running normally. However it says "network cable unplugged" even though it is fully plugged in. Does anyone know of a solution or what the problem may be?

Hey.
Ive a Dell Inspiron 5459 and I?ve been facing this problem of erratic cursor since the past week. My OS is windows 10 64 bit.  It started right after I had updated the bios and installed some security updates for windows. The cursor started lagging and malfunctioned so I just started with an external mouse.
However, today when I was just checking the updates and all, I happened to enter the bios and was kinda flabbergasted by the fact that the touchpad was fully functional and smooth inside the bios. This meant one thing: it wasn?t an internal problem, but prolly a driver issue.
I uninstalled the devices under mouse in the device manager and installed new Synaptics driver but that didn?t help. I uninstalled the updates that were recently installed and even downgraded the bios but all in vain. After all this, hoping against hope I decided to format and install a fresh copy of windows. That didn?t help either. Even with a fresh copy of windows, the cursor kept jumping from one point on the screen to another rendering the touchpad useless. It?s been almost an year to this laptop and I?ve never faced this issue before. Any sugggestions and solutions other than ?install latest drivers, uninstall old drivers? would be appreciated as I?ve already tried everything and searched a lot on the forums but haven?t found any significant solution.
Help.. please!

Once it was uninstalled, and the PC restarted the next morning, the touchpad and keyboard of my acer Aspire 5100 have become unresponsive. I am using a USB mouse and keyboard and everything works great other than the sound. I checked my Device Manager and found exclamation marks by the following:

AMD Turion 64 [email protected] mobile tech TL-50(Processes)
Generic PnP Monitor(Monitors)
ATI I/O Comm Processor LPC controller, HD audio controller, UMBus Root Bus Enumerator(System devices)

I checked all exclamation marks for updates, no change.
There is a pop-up that states "No audio output device installed". I have preformed a system restore to a Week before the issue existed and it persists. At this point its just getting arrogant at the fact that I must carry around a usb optical mouse and a bulky usb Key Board.

If trying to click, for some reason this will type the letter s on whatever field is highlighted. We have noticed this issue on more than one of this model of laptop. Here is a very unprofessional video of the issue. During the video, you will see that the curser will jump left and right very often and randomly. I at one point I typed a few lines of "asdf" to ensure that the keyboard is working; it was working properly. However, you will see later in the video that when I click the touchpad, it automatically types a few letter s's.  I did not type those myself. A restart will fix the issue, and it may not even happen again for months on end. Hi there,

I have a desktop with Windows XP (SP2 32-bit) and a Dell Laptop with Windows 7 (64-bit). Both have one Network Interface card each. Desktop's NIC is connected to a cable modem for internet. I wish to run internet on both the systems, for that I bought a USB-to-ETHERNET connector and an ethernet cable, so that I could connect USB end to the desktop and the other end (with ethernet cable) to my lappy, and could be able to share internet connection. The USB-to-ETHERNET connector came with an installation cd which I have installed already and I have setup the whole connection but unable to share the internet connection. May be there is some configuration problem or so.. Internet is running fine on desktop. Please help...
Thanks in advance..!!!

PS- I am able to connect both the systems by connecting ethernet cable to both NICs.

A:networking using USB-to-ETHERNET connector and an ethernet cable

Upgrade the XP to SP3.

Then show for both systems ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have a cable modem attached to a network (router, cascaded to other routers - different vendors routers but it works / to attach 10 computers). The PCs use a lot of data/bandwith part of the day and works well, generally, but the cable modem sometimes has outages and its important we get network working again. We have no IT support. So thank you in advance for any direction you can provide.

I also have a DSL line/router that is not attached to anything (except it provides wireless).

Question: Can I just swing the cable from the cable modem over to the DSL router and expect internet to work?

I tried it one day and it worked, but we had very limited usage.

I tried it another time when the cable modem/internet failed - and it didn't seem to work. The usage was much higher so I don't know if the amount of data or the required "handshake" would take longer. or what...can you advise. This is just vanilla internet connection. No VPN or such. The applications can be shut down and reopened. But we would rather not have to reboot the PCs.

Second question would be: if I have both DSL and Cable Modem sitting next to each other - can I attach both so they can both be used and provide back up.

The pc ethernet port has worked 100% up to this point. I'll just tell you what happened, Somehow, the tip of the speaker connection managed to get stuck in the green port.

After reading about what to do online, i opened up the pc and managed to open the back of the sound ports and push out the tip with a paperclip. But when I started up the pc again the ethernet cable wasent being dectected.

I've tried the cable out with the laptop and it works 100%, i've also tried a different cable into the pc and that isint being detected either (works 100% with laptop).

The drivers should be upto date. I had to remove the power supply cables from the inside of the computer to get at the sound ports , maybe i didnt put them back right? What cable controls the ethernet port?

I'm a bit lost, the lights on the lan port dont light up either.

Any ideas?

Hey all, I looked around but could not find anything else like the problem that I have now. I can get online with WiFi fine but i'm assuming that my LAN adapter isn't working correctly.

Here's some things I've tried:
re-installing drivers for my Ethernet port
went through my routers settings and it failed to receive any packets
tried 2 other cables
ipconfig release > renew (said it failed because there was no response to DHCP?)
Does anyone have any idea of what I can do to fix this?

Thanks in advance!

BIOS provides USB support before Windows starts which is why it works in BIOS but not Windows.

I suggest the best place to start is recovering your files/folders. You can probably just skip to Step 2 for your case See How to recover your folders/files when Windows won?t boot

Then you can comfortably try fixing your computer (which might need a full reformat/reinstall)

it was working fine with the previous xp home ed. install that was already on the hard drive after i replaced the motherboard and the power supply, and got a agp video card. i counted on having problems with the sound card after reinstalling because i already had problems with it before. no biggy. i was getting internet just fine, everything worked but it was sorta choppy because the mb drivers weren't the same. and my friend said reinstalling was the best way to go.

my version of xp pro is pretty old, but i assumed they're all the same once they're updated. so i installed xp pro. once it started up the ethernet port went totally unresponsive. xp detected it and installed a network for me. and it went about like everything was fine. i plugged it into the dsl modem and nothing happened. no lights on the ethernet port, and no recognition from the modem that anything was connected. but the "local area connection" in "network connections" says it's connected, but not sending or recieving any packets. i uninstalled the driver and restarted and it automatically reinstalled it for me. still nothing.

Hi I purchased this laptop around 4 months ago and really enjoy using it. the touchpad has always been a little unresponsive, particularly on the two finger scroll but I have been patient with it. today the cursor froze completely.  when turn on the laptop or restart the cursor appears on the screen. when I try to move the cursor using the touch pad it does not respond. when i touch the screen, the cursor disappears and never returns no matter what I do. I can navigate using the touch screen but my natural instinct is to use the touchpad so I waste lots of time instinctively going to the touchpad and then having to redo the action on the touch screen.  I updated the Synaptics touchpad driver (tip from a related string on the forum) ... sp71089.exe ... but it made no difference. Please helpThanksFrankkk

Hello guys,

I have quite an odd problem. I noticed that every time I launch a DLNA-related application like LG Smartshare and Lenovo's SHAREIt, my touchpad and mouse mysteriously become unusable (disconnecting/reconnecting does nothing).

I manage to navigate through these applications and perform my intended tasks successfully via keyboard but to enable the touchpad and mouse again, I have to logoff/on and things go back to normal (which rules out the touchpad and mouse being defective).

It only happens when I launch these apps and the rest works as it should be. Any idea what may be causing this and possible resolution?

I bought this laptop less than six months ago, and it's already starting to deteriorate. My Last HP laptop also started to become, essentially useless after about six months. I can see a repeating pattern here, so it's unlikely I'll continue purchasing HP products, but in the meantime, I'd like to fix this issue, so that I can still use this laptop in the interim of finding a much better company, with higher standards for product functionality. My touchpad regularly stops functioning; sometimes, I have to have my hands placed a certain way on the laptop for the touchpand to work. Other times, it will lag, or I'll have to wait or even restart for it to become functional again. Sometimes, the cursor will jump to an entirely new location while using the touchpad. Basically, it rarely works the way it is intended to be used. I have uninstalled, and reinstalled drivers, I have performed recommended updates, and bla bla bla. I'd like a legitimate solution, asap.

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

I am very new to this forum, but looking on Google this seems to be the best site. I have an ethernet cable located in my room, which runs from the router downstairs. It is used for both my xBox 360 and my PC, you know like sharing it.
But tonight, when I was changing the cable from my PC to put it in my 360, there was a sickening crack, the clip has fallen off, and one of the pins has been covered by a piece of plastic from itself.
This is where I need the help, whats the better option, getting rid of it altogether and going for wireless, or is there a way in which you can take off that RJ45 connector, and connect another one by yourself.
You have no idead how helpful you guys will be if you manage to help me here.
THanks
