Dell Inspiron N 5010 replaced hard drive have no OS disk

Q: Dell Inspiron N 5010 replaced hard drive have no OS disk

I have a Dell Inspiron N 5010.  I had to put in a new hard drive.  I do not have a disk with windows 7 on it.  I have a recovery disk but it does not work.  How do I get back my OS?  Also the windows code on the bottom of the computer has worn off and is not readable.  Can anyone help me?

Preferred Solution: Dell Inspiron N 5010 replaced hard drive have no OS disk

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Again from the UK: I am stuck yet again and turn to you fantastic experts for some much needed help.
It started when my laptop would not switch on and I got an error message STOP:c000021a (Fatal System Error) the system has been shut down. Error Code 2000-0146. Msg unit 1: DST Log contains previous errors.Went through all the suggested repairs on the pc but to no avail
So I went to the superstore PC World and they told me it my Hard Drive needed replacing and it would cost the set price of 220.00 for them to undertake the repair. I thought this was a mega amount of money to replace a hard drive so I bought one and replaced it myself - it seemed a simple thing to do.
I had the original discs sent by Dell with the machine. I inserted the Windows Re-installation DVD and restated the Computer. Had to use the f12 key to load the Boot Menu and then highlight the CD/DVD drive. This worked and the programme seemed to be installing and went through menu options that I needed to complete. After some time it eventually reached a screen Installing Windows and went through Copied Files, Expanded Files, Installed Features, Installed Updates and Completing Installation and each had a green tick. It then said Windows needs to restart to continue and closed down and restarted. It then said in White on a Black screen Please wait a moment while Windows prepares to start for the first time. After a few minutes it went back to the Installing Windows screen with all the headings still tic... Read more

If you installed a 7 mm drive, you likely need a spacer to ensure  it connects in place of the original drive, which is 9.5 mm in height.

This is my second attempt to post this question; the first has never made it out of moderation.
I hope someone here has some insight into what is going on with my Inspiron 15R (Model 5010) and possibly some suggestions overcome this problem. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to provide as much information as possible. I did perform a search for answers and unless I missed it, I didn’t find a similar problem.
At this point, it is my opinion that DELL created a Recovery Partition on this Laptop that, after a Recovery procedure is completed, somehow points to loading the OS from one of their Servers or a device that is not available, instead of my local Drive C:, the next and subsequent times my Laptop is restarted after the initial setup is completed.
Background: I purchased this DELL Inspiron 15R new from DELL in 2011 and it came with Windows 7 Home Premium. Last year, when the free Windows 10 upgrade was available for this Laptop I decided to try it, knowing that I would probably have an issue with the Bluetooth capability. As it turns out, Bluetooth partially worked, but I lost the availability of my LAN card. So, I decided to use the Windows 10 feature that allowed me to go back to Windows 7 within the initial 30 day period. The rollback created numerous problems (couldn’t uninstall or update some programs, some USB ports didn’t work, and other issues) that I’ve lived with, but finally decided to restore my laptop using the R... Upgrading the OS destroys the F8 quick restore option - if the partition is still there, it CAN still be used but you'll need to invoke it manually.
That said, the description is exactly what you'd see if your hard drive were failing.  Have you run a full diagnostic on the hard drive?
F12 at powerup - let the quick test run, and then boot to the 32-bit diagnostics and run a surface scan of the hard drive (this will take a couple of hours to complete).
To use the recovery partition where you cannot get in through F8, see
(it will work with Vista or Windows 7).

I've got a new Inspiron 15 a couple of days ago with the following configuration:
Intel core  i7 7700HQ cpu
512GB SSD (bios reports M.2 PCIe ssd-0) -- no other hard drive
Graphics card NVidia Geforce GTX 1050 Ti
Screen resolution 3840 x 2160
My problem is that I cannot split the hard disk into 2 partitions nor can i shrink the partition on which windows is installed from within windows. I used both the windows gui (disk management) and the command line program diskpart.
Does anyone have any idea?

A:New DELL Inspiron 15 7000 denies to shrink windows installation hard disk drive

It sounds like you might have a 7567 Gaming system.  If so, Windows will shrink a partition if it can. I would not recommend using a third party utility to shrink it since problems could happen and you might lose the system.
If you need another partition, you should have an option to place a 2.5 inch drive in the system for that.

I have Dell Inspiron 15N 5010.  When I press the Power on button, it starts making beeping sound  8 times continuously and does not start. Screen is totally blank. What to do ? Please help me.

Regards Vivek

A:Dell Inspiron 15 N 5010 wont turn on only beeping continuous

This means the display isn't detected.
Hold the D key though powerup - you should then get an alternating series of solid color screens.  If you do not, the display is bad.  If you do get those, then it's either the GPU or the video cable that's bad -- try replacing the cable first.  If that doesn't solve the problem, then it's the GPU that's bad and the mainboard will need to be replaced.

My laptop died and would not restart. I was able to run some diagnostics on it and determined that the hard drive was bad. I replaced it with a new one and reinstalled everything that came with the computer when I bought it in 2008. It runs Vista. I have let the computer update many times and it is connecting to the internet through wireless. The biggest problem it has right now is that it will not restart or start without holding down the F12 key. As long as I press F12 and start together, it will start. It will start from sleep mode as well. Sometimes, it will not shut down either. When I shut down from screen, the monitor goes dark, but the computer is still showing that it is on. Maybe it is updating, but it has not indicated that.

The other issue from running the tests was an error 3900:0626 CPU - Thermistor The laptop does seem to run a little hot, but I thought the error may be due to hard drive issues.

I would appreciate any advice with trying to restore this laptop. I am not very computer savvy, but I am interested in getting it back up and running if possible. Thanks for your help.

Hello, I just got a new Dell Dimension E521 with Vista as the operating system. Vista Stinks! For most programs, including video and audio from XP Service Pack 2 Vista doesn't recognize drivers that were fine with XP Service Pack 2.
Even Sonic and Roxio, which are installed on the damn thing give these same problems.

My internet connection is also no better at all and was outright disabled with a message "something has caused Microsoft Internet to stop working" after I tried
to install basic version of Zone Alarm.
Then on reboot it says "unauthorized change made to your license, you must verify your software online". This message come up before the desktop appears and this screen is frozen whether you choose the "verify" or "cancel" option.

Couldn't shut down by any means either, including Control Alt Delete, it wouldn't bring up that window. Had to literally pull the plug and reboot into Safe Mode where I uninstalled Zone Alarm and a couple of other functions that worked perfectly in XP2.

Then I was able to re-boot normally, the message did not come up again.

I hate Vista. Not interested in any "fixes", not worth the trouble. The only fix for Vista is a sledgehammer to the drive!

My hope is this: can I get the hard drive removed and replace it with a clean hard drive that has XP sp2 on it, or am I stuck with this P.O.S. Operating System?

The computer in question is a brand new Dell Dimension E521, 2.0 GH... Read more

So lo and behold this morning I found my internal hard drive disk was not working. I ran the pre boot diagnostics and everything else was working fine. I went to best buy and got another hard drive (1 TB SATA drive) and switched the old one with the new one. The computer still won't boot, but now the pre boot diagnostics recognizes the drive is present and says it's working fine. Any ideas?

I bought a notebook in 2010. I upgraded to Windows 7 Pro right after purchase.

I created a Windows 7 repair disk April 2011.

My hard disk crashed this month and will be replaced and loaded (by manufacturer) to the image as of the purchase in 2010.

When I get the PC, will it help me to use the repair disk?
In my dreams, I'd want to restore Windows and maybe settings and drivers at least to the time the repair disk was created.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance,

When you get the PC, it will have Windows on it just like when it was new. Using your Repair Disk would not put your settings or anything else that you had put on there. It is only for, well Repair. You will have to install all of your programs again.

Your laptop should have a sticker on the bottom with the key for your version of windows. Also, your manufacturer might provide recovery disks.

This is another good reason to always make the recovery disks when you first setup your new laptop.

Hello.  I posted about a month ago when my 13-month-old Dell Inspiron N4110 was stuck in a startup repair loop.  It needed a new hard drive, which I installed myself, and everything worked great for a couple weeks. Then the constant freezing started. I thought it was Firefox, since that was what I was using most often, but it turned out that *everything* would eventually start hanging--Word, Task Manager, iTunes; it even froze on shutdown a couple times. I tried disabling and reinstalling all the plugins in Firefox, I ran virus scans and diagnostics and troubleshooters and chkdsk, and no issues were ever found--until, I think, I downloaded Microsoft .NET framework when a Dell diagnostic tool asked me to.  And finally the constant freezing stopped.
But then it started again a couple days ago. The computer starts up fine, but within a few minutes it will start hanging regularly--like every 30 seconds, the cursor either won't move or clicking on something gives me a "(Not Responding)" message at the top of the window.  This lasts anywhere from 5 seconds to a few minutes.  When I open Task Manager, the CPU usage fluctuates wildly (when Task Manager itself isn't frozen)--it's usually at around 30-60%, but will rise all the way to 99% and then down to 0%.  This is when I just have one or two programs running--Firefox and Word--and I don't have many startup programs, nor a lot of programs or files on the computer in general. Once again, all the W... Read more

Can you boot into safe mode? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
Try running the computer for a while in safe mode and see if the problem continues. If it doesn't, it may be a problem with one or more of your drivers. When you installed the new hard drive, did you use the Dell install CD or just a generic Windows 7 CD? Dells use very specific drivers and it's best to install the OS using one of their install disks.
You may want to try a clean boot and performing some diagnostics. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
It's hard to say at this point what it could be -- this kind of behavior usually indicates an issue with driver and/or system files not loading properly and hogging all the processor bandwidth.

Hi all,
I am attempting to install Win7 in an Inspiron 1545 with a new SATA hard drive that was purchased. When i insert the drive, I get "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found." I have verified the drive is not showing in the BIOS, I've already attempted to reseat the drive several times. In addition, I've attempted to load the chipset drivers, SATA drivers, etc from Dells website, the drive still does not show in the OS install when booting to DVD or in bios.
I dont believe it to be an issue with the new drive, as I plugged the new drive into another model Dell laptop and it recognizes the drive fine in BIOS, also I can still boot to the previous hard drive in this laptop without issue when i plug it back in.
Is there a specific driver, etc that I need to use for the drive to be recognized or other thoughts people have?

A:Inspiron 1545- replacing hard drive, new SATA drive not found "Internal Hard Disk Drive Not Found

This is strange - either the new hard drive has a rare compatibility issue with your onboard controller (I use a 500Gbyte in my 1545 without probs)) or it is a mechanical problem.I would take a close look at the physical dimensions and compare your original hdd with the new one.Watch the video (even though it's about a 1525 (similar to an 1545) and an SSD hdd) -  go to 2:20

I am planning to buy New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000. I would want to replace the harddisk with SSD by next year or so. But i wanted to know if i can have SSD along with hard disk in this laptop.
I wanted both good performance along with large storage. So i was wondering if i can have two disks at once.
Thanks in advance

A:Can i have SSD along with hard disk in New Dell Inspiron 15 series 7000

mSATA and mini-PCI express have the same form factor but are electrically different.   It doesn't look like any of the newer Inspiron 7000 series models have mSATA connectors -- the older 3rd generation ones did, though.
If you want an SSD along with a hard drive, you'll need to consider  an XPS system - not an Inspiron.

But now today diagnostic showed a message that "Hard disk not attached". I have to restart again and again to reach operating system.
Operating system also gave the error thrice "Your P.c have some issues" today the Stop code was Memory management.
What could be the problem....??

A:Dell Inspiron 15, Hard disk related issue.

It appears that the HDD (hard disk drive) could be intermittently failing. If you are in the operating system now, you should start saving your data (documents, MP3, pictures, etc.) to a USB HDD. We will need your exact model number to know what HDDs can be installed.

Much appreciation for info to help me do this, confused and sad.

A:Inspiron 14z-4423 Hard Disk Drive not found: How to Reseat Drive?

The 0142 error is a HDD failure. This is a smart error and indicates that the HDD is failing or already failed error - see this article for reference - http://dell.to/1NAsADX
So, reseating the HDD will not positively help in this case. If you would like to reseat the HDD anyway and check - download the service manual here - http://dell.to/2d326ia
Also, the 0332 is a video card related error. So, the motherboard needs to be replaced.
Personally, I would suggest you to invest your money on a new machine than to repair this system. However, that is your discretion.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

Try the Dell diagnostics

There are several ways to run them. Read carefully. Also note the section "Dell Diagnostics Main Menu"

If Diagnostics do not run from the hard drive, and you do not have the Drivers and Utilities Media, you can download the diagnostics software and create a bootable CD or flash drive to run the diagnostics. Read the "Installation Instructions" on the page I linked to below.

When you download the file, and you get a download options window, choose "Download via your Internet Browser"

This is first post, so please excuse any display of ignorance from me.

I know that the hard drive is bad. It will not let me boot up to try and recover data. Last resort is to send to a data recovery specialist.

If the drive is cool, it will try to boot, but it is looking for a corrupted file, "ntoskrnl.exe" in the \System32 dir (Win 2000 Pro). Is there a way I can transfer this file onto the drive?

I have tried to Repair with the Dell reinstall CD, it does not work. It hangs up during the checking C:\ drive portion. I tried it under the Console Recovery and same thing. Also tried the "fixboot"; it did not do anything for me.

Any Suggestions?

Your help is appreciated.

The hard drive in our Inspiron 600M Laptop died... Dell told me that only this one certain drive was compatible with that system at a cost of $240 for 60GB. Unless Dell was producing/inserting some kind of revolutionary hard drives in 2005, and I doubt they were, your laptop uses an Ultra ATA hard drive - run with it.

If in doubt, remove the bad one and look - what harm can THAT do, right?

Hello!  It looks like your hard drive is/has gone bad.  You will need to replace it.  Depending on where you live, there should be computer repair shops in your city/town that can help you.  Dell might be able to do it but it would cost a bit more as your computer is more then likely out of warranty.

I also got an error message saying hard drive locked, please unlock and try again.  I have no idea how to fix this issue and get Windows 10 up and running on my computer. Does anybody know how to fix this issue (with step by step instructions)? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Can anyone direct me to info on installing a second hard drive to Inspiron 3847 computer for purposes of image back up using Acronis True Image Home software back up? There is space for an optical drive which is totally foreign to me, but nothing is said anywhere in the material in users manual about adding second hard drive which seems to be a pretty normal hardware addition. Not savvy in these matters.

A:Second Hard Drive Dell Inspiron 3847

Dell has not published the procedures for installing an additional SATA hard drive, the Inspiron 3847 has a second 3.5" bay, for the second hard drive next to the primary hard drive, there should be a set of rails located in the bay, two 6-32X1/4, phillips head screws are needed, to attach the rails.
The procedures on pages 26 to 28 of the owners manual should give you an idea of what is required for the installation.
You will need a SATA data cable there should be a spare SATA power connector inside the case. After installing the drive enter the system setup and check that the hard drive is 'enabled' [on] and recognized.
For Windows to recognize the second hard drive, it must be partitioned and formatted.Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management, right click new drive, select format, then you can assign a drive letter.Bev.

I go to the bios setup and under 'Fixed HDD' there's nothing? It's a fairly new hard drive which runs Win 7. I actually tried to reload Win 7 from the start and once it came to which drive to install it on....nothing was there? I don't believe the hard drive is toast at least I hope not. Please what can I do?

Have the hard drive replaced. They are really not that expensive any longer

Our 580 MT is 6 years old so time to instal a new Hard Drive before the original shows any signs of failing.
I have a Seagate 1 TB SSHD to become the main drive (& keep the original - now 6 year old - HDD in place as a Data Drive),
My plan is to put the new drive in the second Bay, clone the Drive, & then simply swap the SATA cables so the "new" drive becomes the Main drive without having to alter anything in the BIOS
Of course this requires a third SATA cable attached to the Motherboard
I checked inside the Tower today, & as should be, two of the SATA sockets are in use, (Numbered 1 & 2)
Sorry for what might be a Dumb Question, but although the sockets marked 1, 2, & 4 are black in colour, number 3 is white - is there any significance to this?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

I'm considering purchasing a Dell Inspiron 1150 with a 40GB hard drive. If I wanted to later add another 40GB, is there room to add an additional drive or would I have to purchase an 80GB drive and transfer the contents of the old drive to the new one?

A:More than one hard drive in a Dell Inspiron 1150?

No, you cannot add hard drives to a laptop. Yes, you can copy the 40GB contents to the 80GB using an adapter or an USB enclosure and possibly a desktop computer.

I've had this problem with a few disks actually--disks with media burned on them (I think QuickTime format), but for whatever reason DVDs either work immediately or take only one or two tries before succeeding.

I am trying to install a legit student copy of MATLAB, the disk is brand new but does somehow have one or two scratches, very minor. Usually the drive tries to read the disk for maybe 30 seconds before giving up, occasionally it spins without any sign of stopping until I pop the disk out when it starts to get hot. Clicking on the drive in the 'my computer' menu just tells me I need to insert a disk into the drive.

All of my drivers should be up to date. Also, for the record, the disk is fine and will run on other computers, just like the previous disks it's been unable to read.

Any suggestions?

A:Dell Inspiron 1521 DVD RW drive will not read MATLAB install disk

Sounds like a bad disk drive. I had a dell Inspiron 1720 that would do the same thing. I finally gave up on it and bought an external DVD drive and it worked fine. You could try ordering a replacement DVD drive from Dell.

My dell inspiron 14z 5423 no longer have sound from both the speakers and the earphone jack.
This happened after I replaced the Battery and also the hard disk from 500gb to 1TB and upgraded to windows 10.
Before this, I was using Windows 8.1 and everything was working well. I have returned it back to windows 8.1 but the no audio problem still persist.
Also, my speaker symbol on the task bar shows a "cross" sign with "no audio output installed" displaying when I hover on the speaker icon.
Please I need help. have tried all options i can think of including driver updates.
One more thing, the sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.

pizzz4allthe sound driver are not showing up on the device manager window where other drivers are displayed.
Hello. Download this Win8.1 IDT audio driver for the Inspiron 14z 5423. There are two versions there -- get the one that says "File Format Hard Drive". Follow the installation instructions and see if the driver shows up in Device Manager.
If it doesn't, perform the PSA or ePSA sound test. If no sound during the test then there has been hardware failure. Could have happened during parts replacement.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5100, P2.4, 768Meg ram. It originally came with a 30 Gig 5400RPM HD. After the drive failed on me, I purchased a Toshiba Travelstar 80 Gig 7200 RPM. Well, the Dell won't support 7200 RPM drives according to Dell tech support, and it would get so hot it shut down intermittantly. I have now purchased a 5400RPM 80 gig drive and need to clone the 7200 to the 5400. The 7200 still works , just unstable. Anyone know of any reliable freeware to clone one drive to the other so I can go back to the 5400RPM. I was told by Dell this will eliminate the overheating problem and stabilize the machine. Everything else works great. Thanks for any advice!

A:Dell Inspiron 5100 Need to copy hard drive

you need to have a media bay or usb case for the 7200 drive. then put the 5400 drive in the laptop and try this tool:

My hard drive is not detected.  It says a read disk error occured whenever i try to boot it up.  I have an external hard drive as well but i have no idea how to get though the boot up to access it.  thanks!

A:Dell Inspiron 1525 Hard Drive not detected.

Hello bmcvicker13.
Welcome to the community.
If the Hard drive on your computer is not getting detected I would suggest you try to load the BIOS defaults and see if that helps. To Load the defaults you need to try the following steps.
Power off the computer.
Power on the computer and as soon as you power it on start tapping the F2 key.
Once you have entered the System Setup screen look for Load Defaults (The option to load defaults would be different for different models. F9 works for some models else you would have an option to Load Defaults). If you can provide the System model I can provide you the exact steps.
Also if the Hard drive is not detected there is no way to access it before it gets detected by the computer.
Please let me know what happens if you successfully load the BIOS defaults and if the Hard drive is still not detected you may need to re-seat it.

I purchased a replacement hard drive for my Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook from New Egg, but the new hard drive does not match up with the pin set of the laptop. There is a big differance from the old hard drive and the new. I guess my question is is there an adapter that will make the pin connections work. I will probably have to send it back, but I will need to purchase the correct one. Any advise?

Old Hard Drive
Toshiba 30 GB, MK3021GAS, DP/N PH-01T707-26402-3CA-0QB4

New Hard Drive
Seagate Momentus 7200, 80 GB, PN 9S5132-501

I think you'll find there is an adapter on the old drive.
Remove it and attach it to the new drive.

I need some assistance with this matter please. I've had this laptop for over 5 years but very recently it quit turning on. After leaving it alone for several months and trying it again, it would turn on but wouldn't let me get past the initial sign-in screen. I have already tried hitting f12 during startup and running the diagnostics test and it gave me the following message while beeping obnoxiously:
error code 2000-0142
Validation: 107408
Msg: hard drive 0 - S/N W0499XZ2
Short self test unsuccessful
Thanks, in advance.
