Ie7 Link Won't Open - Prompts Me To Save The File Or Find A Program To Open It With

Q: Ie7 Link Won't Open - Prompts Me To Save The File Or Find A Program To Open It With

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type
From: ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

I'm running Windows XP SP2 Home with the security settings on their default settings (for the most part), but I had even temporarily switched everything to the lowest settings for troubleshooting purposes and also ran IE with no add-ons, but still no luck. Also switched the "open pages based on content" to enable.

BTW, the link works fine on another machine offsite running XP Pro with IE7 and also a third running WINME with IE6.

Ran Spybot, with nothing found.
We use Kerio personal firewall and AVG antivirus.
I stopped all 3 programs on two occasions for troubleshooting too, but no change.

Any ideas?
Help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First try this :Download and scan with SUPERAntiSypware Free for Home Users * Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation. * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program. * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Udates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.) * When done, select "Scan for Harmful Software". * There are three scanning options. Choose "Perform Complete Scan" and click "Next". * When done, a Scan Summary will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK". * Make sure they all have a checkmark next to them and click "Next". * A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu. * Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. * Click the dated log and press View log. A text file will appear so you can see the results. * Select close to exit the program. * Scan in SAFE MODEIf that does't work please run Online Microsft test (IE required) to rle further issues.

My Issue:

As of 4th July 2009 weekend my system has been operating quirky and buggy. In my troubles I've installed Avast Anitvirus. Now around that time, one day I can recall returning to my computer and it had shutdown on its own, although my system remains on idle the majority of the week by the way. Upon turning on the computer and booted up I got a notification window stating that Windows had been updated and restarted (turned off). At that point, when attempting to open a program (by clicking on any of my icons on the desktop) the computer would quirk and reboot. After several attempts, eventually it resulted in a continuous reboot, window would repeatedly restart. If I can remember correctly, in the process I got some prompts then eventually a dreaded blue screen perhaps something about windows couldnt find or load a file, i think it had a .dll extension. Well, in conclusion, thats when I decided to perform some tech procedures, check boot sequence, BIOS, the usual troubleshooting. Threw in the Windows XP for a Install repair. Not sure what happened. The Visio files were opening just fine a few minutes ago, and now when I try to open them, IE prompts me continuously for "Open, Save, Save as." I tried all three options for the fun of it and IE still prompts every time.
Tried opening them from a remote PC and they open just fine. Can't do anything with them on my PC except view them in Visio itself.
I've tried resetting IE settings. Uninstalling IE 11 and going down to 10. Nothing in event viewer for IE.

Any ideas?

I often attach files to outlook which are hosted on network drives. I typically like to add a UNC instead of the old-fashioned drive letter.

When I go to the attach or insert file dialog, I want to quickly navigate to one of several preferred server directories.

Is there any way I can add one of these directories to the left side of the dialog so that I can click on it directly? (I tried dragging the folder icon but that doesn't work.)

I've googled and not found any solution so far. (This is somewhat trivial in both Dolphin and Nautilus.)

I love Jasc Paint Shop Pro and have become quite good at working with it. I right click on a jpeg and try to choose it as my default for viewing photos but it doesn't appear as an option. I right click on PSP and look to see where it is, it's in Program files... I try to get the OPEN WITH program to find it in program files but it doesn't show up.

How can I get PSP as my default to view photos? Is this another way Microsoft gets you to use their products?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\" Is the location of my PSP7

A:Open With... can't find my program

In search, type ... Default Programs

In the window that opens choose ... Set your default programs
Find Paint Shop Pro in the list and have it associate with all the files it can handle.

Choose ... Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
There you can select JPG, JPEG, PNG etc to associate with Paint Shop Pro.

Having said all that, Paint Shop Pro is really a Editor not a Viewer.
Personally I wouldn't use it for just viewing. I'd get something else for that.

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

When I click on a link for a file, like an mp3, rdp, etc. the only options I get are save or cancel.  For example, if I try to connect to a windows azure virtual machine I have to download the RDP file - I can't just click open.  Is this an IE11
issue?  Is it a group policy setting?  Is this something I can fix/change?  Can I have my IT department change something?  This is really frustrating.  Any thoughts are appreciated.

I am running Windows 8.1 and IE11

A:Can't open a file, can only save or cancel

Where do you download these mp3, rdp files? Could you please provide us with the link for downloading?
Do this problem occurs in all files from all websites?
Have you tried running IE in No Add-on mode?
I recommend you to reset these options.
As for me, some websites may customize the download experience. This can be activated by a new HTTP header called X-Download-Options which can be set to noopen. When that header is passed with a file attachment IE will not provide the option to directly open
the file, instead you must first save the file locally and then open it.

I understand there have been a few people who have asked this, but I can't seem to find a definite answer on this.
1. Can this be disabled?
2. If not, why not? What is the security feature or concept behind this prompt making it not possible to to be turned off?
3. If this can't be turned off, what do Microsoft recommend to customers in enterprise environments who have this requirement?  An e.g. is, a SAP database user who regularly has to download numerous pdf/docx files, but this prompt only
makes the user environment worse. It sure is very much understandable that regularly downloading files from a particular link, becomes annoying to the user if he/she has to click this prompt every time.
Thanks & Regards,

A:IE9 : Do you want to Open or Save this file prompt

What I observed is when IE8 is upgraded to IE9, this issue is not experienced. In IE8 There used to be a key called HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
which stored the File Types that could either Auto-Open or not. This Key is not created in IE9, likely so as to support the policy of not auto-opening any file extensions but I believe is migrated along when IE8 is upgraded. This Key can be added
to the registry and IE9 still reads and applies settings associated with it.
Whichever File Type you need to Auto-open, simply add a Zero Length Binary value by its name. I have added AcroPDF.PDF and AcroPDF.PDF.1 with Zero Length Binary values to auto
open PDF files. These key values can either be manually added to the registry OR deployed using group policie preferences, and then the user is able to Auto-Open the PDF documents in the browser in this example. the same can be applied to .docx,
.ppt file types, etc.
Hope this helps many who are searching for this solution.

I have searched up and down and around the web for a fix for this with no luck.
Hope I am posting this in the correct place..

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the
mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire
application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs.
It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.

Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.)

I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

If I need to post more info please just let me know.
Thanks so much.
Appreciate the help...

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

Do you know when this problem began? Try a System Restore to a point in time BEFORE the problem began. Here's the procedure: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/76905-system-restore-how.html. Be sure to check the box to show more than 5 days of restore points. If the first attempt fails, then try an earlier point or two. NOTE: You will have to re-install any software and updates you installed and uninstall any software you removed between now and the restore point, but you can use Windows Update for the updates.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

i want to open a file, i press file - open - and then try to go to My documents for finding the file i want to use, the whole program stops responding and closes within some seconds.
This problem happens in all my programs where i want to save/open a file. I just cant go to other folders and save/open a file from there!
Once I got a error reporting box saying this:
"DrWatson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

It started to be like this for some days ago, and i couldnt find a solution to it.
Cant remember that i downloaded something that can cause it all.

In all programs I use - Chrome/IE11 and OpenOffice. when I wish to open or save a file the dialog box is does the following:

Ok, My NAV2003 recently stopped working, so i took nortons advice and went to do a complete uninstall. Once uninstalled, i went to uninstall Norton Systemworks, and it said that there were still files that needed to be removed before i could uninstall NSW. i went through and manually deleted them, but i seemed to of screwed up somewhere along the line. every program i try to open opens up excel. then it says it cant recognize that filetype.(im assuming that however exe files normally open got screwed up, and somehow pointed to open up through excel.) also, when i went to my norton protected recycle bin, it wouldnt open, saying that program.exe could not be found. I have been searching all over for a solution, and the only ones i find are for this type of thing happening in windows 98. i tried using the windows 98 exefix08 or whatever that is called, and it couldnt find my regedit. so i copied the regedit file to c:/windows/ and tried again.. it says the program worked succesfully, and so i took that regedit and replaced the other one in the winnt directory with it. it didnt fix anything, so im assuming that that fix only works for 98. i did that online viruse scan, and it came up with nothing. Please Help me!
P.S. I cant open system restore, or use install/uninstall programs. the only program that works is internet explorer.
Thank you,

Howdy DominicC...

If the OS is XP, try rebooting the pc and start tapping the F8 key, then choose "Safe Mode Command prompt", at the C:\> type in C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and see if it will let you restore it back to a date before it happened...

created it. Is their a way to add file extensions to Windows little bag of tricks?

Case in point: McAfees Stinger makes a report .opt - Windows states that in order for
Windows to open this file Windows needs to know what program made it. Isn't there
someplace in the bowels of XP that I can add that .opt and no longer have to go through

If I change the .opt to .txt Windows can open it in Notepad but it has some strange chicken
scratch oh I know the chicken scratch has a name, I just don't know what it is at the moment
and that is not the point here anyway.

This one is terribly simple I know. By choosing the second option I'm able to pick from several programs.........but........

there are files that I download from the internet that once "filed away" seem to come apart at the seams and all I have
are the peices without the gluethreadscrewnail that held them together and made them so darn interesting in the first place.

A user tries to download a PDF from a government site by selecting a checkbox for the document and hitting Download Document button. The file download box comes up with "Downloading file... Open/Save/Cancel". When she hits Open, the box dismisses and the download progress box appears. Almost immediately, however, the file download box reappears but this time Open is grayed out, forcing the user to save it before it will be downloaded and opened. On any other computer in the office, the file will open right up. I have checked the internet settings and they seem correct. What would cause this to happen just to this one user? Or, what can I do to fix it?

Win7 Ultimate

I hope I can explain this clearly.

When I go to an Open or Save dialog box in any application and I click on any folder any where in Windows outside of the application, the Save as... or Open dialog for that application switches to that folder, which is great feature because it quickly enables me to change the location in those dialogs. It's not currently working.

My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

Thank you for any help

My AOL program gave an error message that something was corrupted. Shortly after that the program wouldn't open. I deleted several older copies of this AOL in hopes to reinstall it as I've had to do before but one copy won't delete. It said it was "open in another folder or file and to close it" but it isn't open anywhere. Need help to delete this "open" file.

how can I run a .exe file on my Onedrive  from a web link without confirmation to open the executable?

I have a web page that is distributed to users within the company that has various links to the users machine and company's intranet.

One of them is a file:///d:/FOLDERNAME link that should open up the folder in Windows Explorer. All users of the web page will have this folder on their computer.
However, when I test it in IE, the link does not respond at all. Hovering over it displays the correct link. But clicking on it, or right clicking and selecting open does nothing.

WHAT DOES WORKI can put the URL directly into IE and it opens the directory perfectly.
I can put the link into an Outlook message and it opens the directory after giving a warning. (Micorsoft Office has identified a potential security concern. The location may be unsafe. Do you want to continue)
I tried opening this with Safari and I get a message "You don't have permission to view this page"
I think this must be some IE Security setting or a permission on the actual folder. I've tinkered a bit with this, but with no real direction and no different results.

I am running a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit on a new computer. There seems to be a flaw in Windows 8.1 that randomly flares up when interacting with a "Save As" or "Open" file dialog. Most of the time it works fine, sometimes with a delay, and other times it just hangs the application. Windows is still running and I can do other things except do any file dialog in any application.

Furthermore, I try to kill the process in task manager and I get the message that I don't have permissions to kill the process. I am logged in as administrator. Running task manager as administrator does no good. Trying to restart the computer also does no good as Windows will hang on "Restarting". The only option at that point is the crash the entire system by powering off. Once powered on it seems to work just fine.

I do have mapped network drives but they all show "green" on Explorer. I've seen others having a similar problem, so I'd have to think this is a serious bug in Windows.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

A:Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit save as or open file dialog freezes

I had Outlook hang trying to save an email attachment. Could not kill the process and received message "Error terminating process. Access denied.". While this was happening, I tried to save a file in Adobe Acrobat only to have it hang as well. It would appear that once one app hangs any other app trying to bring up the file dialog will hang.

I had only 2 mapped network drives and both were showing "green". Just experimenting, I removed the 2 network mapped drives while the app was hanging. After about 15 seconds, the apps freed up and the "Save Attachment" dialog popped up on both hung apps.

Now I consider this to be a bug. But to get Microsoft to admit that will be a herculaneum effort. This behavior did not happen on Windows 7. Does anyone know of a setting that can be changed to prevent Windows from trying to open every drive I have attached to the computer every time I open or save a file?

I'm creating a desktop app in Visual Studio for my company. It will be a fairly simple Inventory Query that is simple to use (one screen) and much more feature rich. I'm new to Visual Studio but I'm figuring out that piece.

What I want to do it set up a schedule run of a report dump from Oracle. Easy to do but when I schedule a report the only way I can get the output without being within Oracle is to have it send to my email. The email I receive has the same subject line except for the report number. It ALWAYS states, "Inventory - Available has completed with status Normal - Request #".

From this point I would click the URL within the body of the email, which is a one time link, and my report would open as html. I can then save it as a txt file on my desktop, import to excel and modify as needed through a macro, which then updates an Access table, which will later be linked to my App created in Visual Studio.

Problem: I need some automation so this can update on it's own every 3 hours and I have no idea how to do so.

When the email comes to my inbox, I would like Outlook to grab it (maybe from a rule that looks at From and the piece of the Subject that's always the same. Then auto open the URL in the body. Save it as a txt file to a specified destination. I'd want to have a file named Current_Inventory_Level.txt that always gets selected during the save and overwritten.

From there I should be able to make the other stuff happen. ... Read more

I work with Microsoft TFS and need to save a lot of documents in numbered directories. Opening and saving these files is a pain as there are so many of them, can I set the default file save and open dialog locations to ease my suffering?

Ideally this is a registry entry I could update to switch over new default locations, this can happen up to 10 times a day. Please do not suggest adding the locations to favorites, as that tree navigation is the worst thing ever.

So I supidly pressed the tick box where it asked me whether I wanted to, be each time i opened a rar file, be asked whether to save or open the file. Now everytime I open a .rar file it bypasses the 'do you want to save or open file?' and automatically saves and opens the file using the rar program thing. Only I dont want to buy it, and as I've exeeded the 'evaluation' period this screen keeps appearing asking me to by it blah blah. So my question is:
How do I restore this option?
Thanks a bunch!

A:Restoring the prompt 'Do you want to save or open this file?' box option

Open any folder with Windows Explorer or open My Computer, and then click on Tools in the menu bar and subsequently Folder Options in the drop down menu. Alternatively, go to Control Panel and select Folder Options.

In the Folder Options dialog, select File Types tab. This tab lists every file type associated with Windows and may take a while to open.

Locate and highlight (select) the file type or extension that you want to revert back the file download behavior to ask for open or save confirmation and stop the automatic opening or saving of downloaded file.
Click on Advanced button. You have to log on or login on user account with Administrator or Power User privileges to use this function.
In the Edit File Type window, clear (untick) the Confirm open after download check box.

Click OK when done.
Repeat the procedure for other filetype and ext that you want to change back to normal default.
