Multiple T470s unresponsive when docked

Q: Multiple T470s unresponsive when docked

Hello, my first post - please be gentle! We have multiple T470s ThinkPad's which when connected to the ultra dock 40A2, will randomly become unresponsive to input via Bluetooth or USB. The laptops all run with their displays closed and opening the display or undocking the computer allows functionality to return. When the issue happens, the external display remains powered on and the time is changing which indicates that the ThinkPad has not fully frozen. Plugging in a USB mouse to either the ThinkPad or the dock results in no power light or activity, however, if the mouse is connected directly and the computer is removed from the dock, the mouse powers on and works as expected. The laptops have all been fully updated with drivers via the Lenovo System Update app and they are also running Windows 10 1803 with all available updates installed. As far as I can tell, only one firmware update for the docks is available (2.33.000) which has been applied with no change The issue can affect the same user every 10-20 minutes one day (persisting after restarts etc) and then the ThinkPad works fine the day after. No errors or alerts are shown in Windows event viewer to indicate an issue has occurred Thank you for your time

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My HP split x2 works fine in tablet mode, but when docked, turns off and is unresponsive. Won't turn on or anything.

I work for an organization that has recently begun deploying Lenovo T470S modem 20JTS0QF00 (i5-6300U CPU). We are running into a very concerning issue where the machines all run generally poorly. They are opearting on a corporate image of Windows 7 which functions well on all other workstations in our environment. I have tried performing all Windows updates, as well as all released Lenovo updates (drivers, BIOS/UEFI, etc...). I've tweaked Windows settings, but the thing that gets me is all of our X270, T470, and X1 Carbon machines run just fine on the exact same image. The slowness is pervasive througout all applications, and actually leads to dragging video, etc. Just wanted to see if anyone has run into anything like this, and if you have any suggestion.Thanks.

My laptop just started crashing a few days ago. So far it has crashed about three times (but I've been trying to avoid it by working on safe mode w/ networking). It worked fine on safe mode with and without networking.

I don't think I downloaded any new program right before it started happening. I also ran a virus scan on my computer that revealed no problems.

The crashes usually happen after I've been on the internet for a while, although it also happened once while I was working on Word without any internet connection. The sign that forewarns a crash is when I submit a command (such as closing Word) and it becomes unresponsive.

The crash screen says that there is a Driver_power_state_failure with a STOP: 0x0000009F (0x000000000000003,0xFFFFFA800498C050, 0xFFFFF800045A34D8, 0xFFFFFA80042FC8CO)

Thanks for any help you can give. I'm really glad I found this site.

Hi, apparently I have some suspicious stuff on my computer. Like the title says, I have the Google (EDIT: and other search engines) redirection to ads problem in Firefox. On top of this, though, Chrome is unresponsive on startup (the "kill pages" box comes up, but isn't able to do anything). Also, every so often Windows will say that some host process has become unresponsive and will stop it. I ran Malwarebytes Anti-malware, and it was able to fix about 15 problems, but the issues all still persist.

Could anyone give me a hand? Thanks!
EDIT: I'm on Vista Home Premium sp2

Hi There

I have an HP Compaq NX8220. The sound was working fine up to a few hours ago while docked. Now when I the laptop is docked there is no sound. The drivers all look fine in device manager and I have tried the latest drivers and updates but still no luck.

When the laptop is undocked the sound is fine.

I have been on google for sometime now and cant find a valid solution, I have even contacted the HP service centre who dont have any idea what the problem is.

I'm using an X1E with an external monitor connected to a Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock via DP and the laptop will only use the Nvidia GPU. I really don't want the machine constantly running hot with the fans going if I'm just doing office work and have no need for the dGPU.

When I attempt to reboot my T460p (20FWCTO1WW) while it's in its Ultra Dock (40A20090US), it shuts down properly but hangs at the red Lenovo splash screen on restart. If I remove it from the dock and power off/on, it boots normally. I can then put it to sleep, drop it in the dock, wake it up and everything is OK. This only started happening after the application of the latest firmware, R07ET71W 2.11. Has anyeone else experienced this?

My split x2 last night powered off, I assumed that the charger came unplugged but that wasn't the issue. Whenever I attach the tablet to the dock the computer shuts off immediately. I tried plugging th dock in to charge it but it won't charge. I charged the tablet to full battery as well but the problem still occurs.

A:split x2 shuts down when docked

Hello byang Its important to also tell us which model/product number you have so we can more acurately help you.How to find my product number. I don't have a Split X2 so I can only guess based on what others with your problem have reported here. There isn't any specific documentation for your issue by HP. The Split X2 13 has two batteries, one for the tablet and one for the dock. It sounds like the battery in the dock has most likely failed. One user reported that he disconnected the battery cable in the dock to get the keyboard to respond. You can certainly try disconnecting it to see if it helps. Of course you wont have any ports working on the dock.Page 33 of the manual shows how to remove or disconnect the dock battery.  Another user found a flaw in the design of those tablets with regard to the cables near the pivoting rod/hinge.They were shorting out. I would check that also to make sure that isnt shorting out the power.Link here. I would also check the Device Manager to see if there are any caution signs next to Batteries in the menu. How to use the Device Manager. If so, you can right click on the device and uninstall it, reboot the PC and it will reinstall itself. Let me know your results.

I have a 2 week old ThinkPad P70 with the following specs: i7-6700HQ16GB RAMWin 10 ProNvidia Quadro M600M 2GB256GB NVME SSDIt runs great, until I dock it. When its docked, it starts to stutter. You can't drag a window across the screen or it'll lag out. The computer can't keep up with how fast I'm typing - the words are laggy appearing on the screen, its generally slow and laggy. The weird part is this problem is intermittent. It'll be great for a few hours, then stutter.  I don't have any out-of-the-norm software or antivirus running on it. When it stutters the CPU, RAM, and disk usage aren't particularly high. And it only happens when its docked. The Dock has a 230w power supply, the laptop came with a 170w power supply so there shouldn't be a power issue. I've updated BIOS and drivers to the latest version. Any ideas on what I can do?

Good day all, I've got a Lenovo P50 with the 230W workstation dock. It has been working flawlessly over a year, but since today the laptop freezes whenever I dock the system. With freezes I mean that the display is not updated, mouse is not moving, cannot reset the machine with CTRL+ALT+DEL (or backspace in Linux) etcetera. Whenever I undock the machine it becomes responsive again straight away.  This happens in both Windows 10 and Manjaro Linux (LTS kernel 4.9). In both cases I cannot find any hardware errors in the system management logs (e.g. Windows' logbook or on Linux the output of dmesg command) I ran Lenovo's basic diagnostic from the BIOS and it passed. I then ran an extended memory & CPUtest but both passed fine. Also the machine boots through the BIOS fine, but if docked it will not pass the boot screen of the OS. I tried redocking the machine several times to make sure it was not a single event, and unfortunately it is not.I tried unplugging all devices from the dock except power, and that also did not solve the problem. I normally have 2 1080p monitors connected via DVI and DisplayPort, ethernet LAN, and 1 USB hub from the monitor, along with mice/keyboard. I've not updated any firmware ever since I got the laptop, as I've never had the need to update due to compatability problems or whatnot.

I've been experiencing this issue for some time now, and haven't found any permanent solution. The lan port on laptop itself works fine, once docked the link lights go down which indicates that the connection has been relayed to docking station lan port which doesnt light up when cable plugged in. Things that I already tried are: Bios upgrade, downgrade, multiple different lan drivers, different power adapters for docking, reinstalling windows, hardware diagnostics, running without battery, trying 15+ different docking stations. What really confuses me is that theres software called Dell power manager, and when I changed the default setting from Adaptive to Standart it did work for some time with any docking station, when it stops it would only work from switches/routers that have PoE ports. All power adapters that I used for testing are 90W. I'm out of ideas here, any help would be appreciated.

I have a Dell E5540. I recently set up docking after having the dock for over a year. The issue I am having is that when the laptop is docked my wireless connection goes to almost nothing. Less than half a Meg.
When I pull it out of the dock the wireless jumps to normal. Reading on this issue I found a "workaround". If I open the lid on the laptop while its docked my wireless is normal...close it..and its back to zilch.
I would think this is a setting somewhere but, so far, nothing is working.
Any ideas?

A:Wireless Issues when Docked

Hi mcftlf,Thanks for posting. The Antenna for the wireless is located in the lid, so when it's closed, it's not receiving a good signal.  Opening the lid exposes the antenna to more signal area to receive the wifi signal.  Best way to resolve this is to use a wired connection when docked, or open the lid.

I have a Gateway Laptop (M460) everytime I move the monitor it gives me an error "You cannot eject your computer because one of the devices in the docking station, 'Docking Station', cannot be stopped because of an unknown error. Since this device is still being used, do not remove the computer."

The laptop does not have a docking station, it never did have one. It's driving me crazy. I did a clean install of XP and it still does it. When it's in DOS it works fine. I would imagine it's some type of faulty sensor/hardware that's provoking windows to think it's docked. Is there a way to disable the docking functionality in windows so this stops. The laptop is too old to bother sending in to have fixed. The other option I'd be fine with is opening it up and remove the sensor (If someone knows where it is at).

Thanks in advance

About two weeks ago my Win 7 Home Premium got some fatal disease which I could not cure. Ran multiple security scans with different software. None found any malware, but everything I tried made it a little worse.
Bought a new computer and now want to transfer some of the data from my old corrupted drive to the new computer. Plan to remove old drive and put it in docking station. Now for the big question. Is there any chance the old corrupted Windows will try to start from that docked drive and corrupt my new computer?
I'm guessing not since it won't be the active drive, but I want advice from someone who knows for certain it won't cause any trouble. There is nothing on that drive that's worth taking a chance of corrupting a new computer that's not even a week old.

A:recovering data from docked HDD

Now for the big question. Is there any chance the old corrupted Windows will try to start from that docked drive

It will be OK, but I would scan the drive or the files with a AV(Malwarebytes Anti Malware, MSE) before transferring the data.

When I dock my T460 in a Lenovo Basic Dock, the maximum resolution I can get on my 24" external monitor is 1920 x 1080, even though the computer should be able to handle 1920 x 1200 (according to https://support.lenovo.com/dk/en/documents/pd029622). This is somewhat annoying as it distorts the image. I have tried updating the display drivers, but no luck. I run the computer through a KVM switch, but that's not the problem; even when I connect it directly, it doesn't work. I use the VGA connectors on the computer and screen. For the record, I also use a laptop from a different manufacturer which runs at 1920 x 1200 on the same external monitor when docked without any problems. So I guess the issue must lie in the T460 and/or dock. Any ideas for getting 1920 x 1200 when docked would be greatly appreciated!  :-)

Win 7 Pro x64
NVIDIA Quadro K1000M

For the six months that I've owned this Lenovo W530, it's worked this way: I bring it home, put it in the dock (closed), and I use my external keyboard and display.

Yesterday, for no reason I know of, I couldn't get any video signal to the monitor. In an effort to fix the problem, I opened the laptop and changed the Windows settings to extend the display.

I'm happy with the results - a free second display - and now just want to know how to keep it this way. Where are the settings I should embed in stone to keep this - either in the video card control panel or Win7?

Things to keep in mind:

- I'm switching daily b/w this and another workspace - where I do run in 'clamshell' mode, tied to two external displays

- when using the laptop's screen in this way (as a second display), I have the resolution ratcheted down (from 1920x to 1280x) because it's farther away from me.

I'd like to find a 'fast switch' approach where I can store both sets of settings (three sets, if you consider that I sometimes need to use the laptop undocked at its native res).

Welcome to sevenforums!

I suggest trying DisplayFusion.com for their product, 30 day trial so you can make sure it works for you.

It has Monitor profiles as one feature, I checked, I have been using 3 months or so myself now.

It's a great utility and reasonably priced, if you buy it, check out their other products, they give a very steep discount when you buy them at the same time.

Maybe some else has, but I've not found a "solution" to this same problem. When my laptop is "open", the attached flat panel defaults to the same resolution as the laptop; when the laptop is "closed" it jumps back to full resolution. Merely opening the laptop causes the resolution to reset.

I am trying to disable the WiFi on my XPS 13 9365 when docked. I prefer to use the Wired connection. I cannot find a setting / option to allow this. I tried updating my drivers via the Dell Command Update. I downloaded the Intel ProSET driver / utility from Intel for this adapter (but it wants me to import a profile, which i cannot seem to find). Went through the BIOS to see if there was an option (like the older latitudes).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank You.

A:XPS 13 9365 - Disable Wifi when docked

WiFi does not auto-disable, and there probably isn't an option to do this.  Some systems had a BIOS-level option to enable this, but that required you to be using a wired NIC built into the system itself (or the old-style dock, which tapped into the built-in NIC), whereas the WD15 and TB16 docks have their own full NIC hardware built into them.  However, Windows often IS smart enough to prefer wired connections when they're available anyway.  If you want to verify this, open Task Manager, click More Options, go to the Performance tab, and then start streaming video or running a speed test or something.  See which network adapter shows the spike in traffic.
Also note that in some cases, Windows will actually use BOTH interfaces simultaneously to increase throughput.  That's part of the SMB 3.0 spec, but that admittedly only comes into play when you're communicating with another system running Windows 8 / Server 2012 or better.

We still have several T420s at work and one of these has a strange behaviour: when it is put into a dock (the "advanced" port replicator) it slows down its CPU to 0.76 GHz and does not let it run at higher speed no matter how much load you put on it. Once I remove it from the dock and put some (even light) load on it, it perfectly increased the CPU speed, up to its maximum of 2.8 GHz. It is not a problem of a specific dock, I already tried a couple of these. It is a problem of that T420s. The other T420s we have do not have this problem. I did also already reset all BIOS settings to default. Does anyone have an idea what may cause this strange behaviour? Is it a hardware problem and I am out of luck (warranty period has long been exceeded)?

I don't have my Lenovo TB3 dock with me, so the following issue may not be relevant to your users: I use an old Microsoft USB-C Continuum Dock, and your scenario doesn't work quite right on that one: hitting power with the lid closed, the laptop goes to sleep, but then waking it with the power button, the monitor connected to the Continuum Dock doesn't receive signal. The only fix is to open the X1 Yoga, wake it, close the lid (sleeps the system), and waking it again, after which things work fine again. Maybe a graphics driver bug or a Continuum dock firmware bug.  Maybe someone with ... Read more

Hello. I've got a user with an X1 Carbon connected to a USB 3.0 Dock. I've done every type of cleaning imagineable on this system and I've tried different user accounts. No matter what, when the dock is connected, the time it takes for the users account to load is anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes. If undocked, things load up nice and quick. And if you disconnect the dock during the login when it's sitting at loading desktop or any one of the other spots it seems to linger on, it kicks in and loads normally the second the dock is disconnected. I've been through several sites and forums and I've tried suggestions from updating the Intel USB 3.0 extensible host drivers, setting power options to Maximum and I've updated DisplayLink drivers to the latest. I've also tried anothe dock. And I have a few other users with the same setup and they're telling me about login lag. Does anyone have any solutions for this? I was thinking there might be a firmware update for the dock but I can't find one on that models page. Just drivers. All I can come up with right now is the work around of having the user login undocked and then dock once the desktop loads. It seems to work fine once it's loaded up. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I am using an Elitebook 840 G1 with a docking station. I want to connect three external HP Z27N monitors. The problem is that while I have two Displayports on the docking station and one on the laptop, I am not able to use all three at once. If the laptop is docked, I can use the ports on the docking station, but not the one on the laptop. I would vastly prefer to use the brand new $600 Z27N over an old VGA capable monitor for the 3rd display and I am hoping that there is a way. Oddly enough, I am able to use this configuraion with my older Elitebook 8460p, although the third monitor makes it overheat. Thanks! Dave

I currently use an E7470 with docking station in office with a 27 inch Dell monitor. While docked, my display settings are set to "Medium - 125%". When I un-docked, Medium-125% is too big and I always have to change it manually to "Small-100%".
Is there a way for my E7470 to automatically switch the Display settings when I dock and un-docked?

I am new to the forum, and hope someone can help me suss out the issues I am having with a few HP Laptops at my work. We are using HP EliteBook 8540p, with Windows 7 64bit Enterprise Edition. We also use the HP Advanced Docking station with these units. What I am seeing is that a fair number of the laptops (not all) are crashing after going to sleep. I have the power options on my laptop to sleep when I press the power button, and when I test this out, I can see the disk activity light just chug away, and never fall asleep. At that point the system never wakes up, and eventually crashes. I am seeing the following error from the crash report...

You have old drivers need to be updated.

Agere Systems Soft Modem

RimSerial_AMD64.sys Tue Nov 25 06:01:01 2008 BlackBerry - PDA Software Downloads - Support & Services at BlackBerry.com
Likely from Blackberry Phones. If there is no update available - see note below.

Create a restore point, using Windows Explorer, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, locate the driver file, and rename it from .sys to .old. Reboot and the driver will not load. This will break the software this driver is associated with. You can then uninstall that software.

hp split x2 windows 8.1 64 bite0w59ua#ababest buy model  It started last week.  My laptop started getting really choppy.  The mouse was unresponsive.  I would touch an icon on the screen and nothing would happen.  This happened mainly after I came out of sleep mode or just turned the computer on.  Then, after 30 minutes or so, it would be fine. I was worried about spyware or a virus.  Nothing.I was worried the hard drive was failing.  So I ran chkdsk /f /rIt kept reoccuring.I even uninstalled some things.  Ran CCleaner, too. Still did it. THEN I decided to undock the tablet from the keyboard and VOILA ... It's perfect!I reattached it and it started up again! So, I've narrowed the problem to the dock.  What do I do!?!

Hey @dough54321 , Welcome back to the HP Forums! I see you're having issues with poor performance and lockup on your HP Split 13-m010dx x2 PC. Please download and install the Intel Smart Connect Technology, and the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver. I would also recommend you update your BIOS. You can download this here: HP Notebook System BIOS Update (Intel Processors). You may need to try restoring the notebook to before the issue started. You can do this by tapping F11 while the notebook turns on.  Let me know if this helps!

Hi all,
Normally, my computer runs very smooth with no errors or bsod at all. When I put it on the docking station, I get a bsod when it gets to the password at startup. I've tried disconnection everything from the docking station and turning it on just with the laptop sitting on it, and it crashes to the bsod.

The bsod error I'm getting is: 0x00000018: REFERENCE_BY_POINTER
It doesn't generate a log file that I can see anywhere.
My computer is a dell precision m4300 and the basic docking station.
I have windows 7 (7100) x32 loaded and all my drivers are up to date.

Can anyone help please?

Let's start by gathering a bunch of information about the system and the docking station.
To do this, follow the instructions in this post: http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html

I have an X230 running Windows 10. When it sat in the docking station / port replicator, its wireless response is poor. When I intially dock my T430 on a Series 3 mini dock, everything functions properly. Mouse, keyboard and display work fine. After maybe 5-10 minutes the external display flickers black, the external mouse and keyboard stop functioning and it must be re-docked to solve this for another 5-10 minutes. Using a 90w power supply on the dock. I've read disabling USB Root Hub in device manager may resolve this, but I've also seen several people say it does not work, and I do not have administrative rights  so if there's a solution that would'nt involve device manager, or a more "for sure" solution as not to take up too much IT time. Thank you.

I have a new Dell Latitude E5570, that I have connected to the Dell ePort PR02X dock.  Connected to the dock are two Dell 27 UltraHD 4K Monitors model P2715Q.
I have all the latest drivers and BIOS that is provided by support.dell.com.
I am using the Dell provided DisplayPort to mini DisplayPort cables that came with the monitors.
My screen randomly goes black for about a second, then comes back on.  It stays on for a random amount of time, then does it again.
What I've tried:- Tried a different monitor- Tried different cables- Tried a different docking station- Tried DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables- Ran all the diagnostic tools, everything checks out fine- Tried Dell technical support - They have been out twice and put in two new motherboards - They suggested that I send the laptop in to have it "diagnosed".  I can't be without my laptop for that long. Does anyone have any suggestions?  Dell Support does not seem to understand my pain, and have not been very useful.

A:E5570 docked Monitor turning on and off

We are having a similar issue with a E5570 connected to a E-port plus dock and using DVI cables on Win 7.
-BIOS is current
-Tried both Intel and Dell recommended display drivers
-Replace Dock/Cables/Displays
Issue was not occuring on our clients same configuration using a E5450 laptop.

We have seen this same issue on E5550 systems, but updating the firmware on the synaptic driver typically resolves the issue

Hello together,
hope some one has an idea.
We have an Precision 7710 which often, e.g. after returning back to the docking station, doesn't recognize the USB devices like mouse, keyboard and wireless headset anymore. These are connected to the docking station.
In the device manager are then a lot of unrecognized devices also.
We changed already the docking-station, no effect.
We tried to uninstall / install USB device drivers.
We made BIOS update.
Dell support changed the main board, that had no effect either.
The device got reimaged, then it worked for two weeks.
Now the problem reappeared. The user has no administrative rights, no installations have been done in the mean time. He only worked with the laptop, e.g. connected USB sticks, a Nokia phone and a 3D mouse.
I got it running again by deleting the unknow devices in device manager, then docking again. But after some minutes and undocking / docking the problem appeared again.
We have the same Laptop with same installations at other places with no problems.
Dell hotline says now I have to reimage again, it is probably a software error.
Is it really possible that connecting some USB devices can break all USB ports at the docking station?
Probably we will reimage one more time and take care then which devices we will connect.
But I don't really know what to do then. I fear the problem will appear at random again.
Windows 10 64-bit is used.
