Icon shortcuts wont work

Q: Icon shortcuts wont work

Hi , i have this IBM Netvista with win2000. The problem is , that suddenly , most of the system shortcuts ( IE, outlook , control panel , etc..) doesnt work , i just get msgs like this: "Cant find the file c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplorer.exe". Like if the references to the exe files where bad or something. The weird thing is that , for example i click my pc , then click the Folders icon, the folder tree opens at left..., then i click on internet explorer at bottom... and the IE windows activates and i can surf the web normally . Overall..the thing is that a lot of icons wont work ( some system icons , and even some external soft icons , like kazaa for example ) . Does anyone has any clue about whats going on ? thx a lot.

Preferred Solution: Icon shortcuts wont work

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I posted this question on MS Forums yesterday and received an e-mail that there was a response. The link to the post did not work and I find no response under my post. I'm hoping that Tech Guy is much better.

The desktop icons for both .doc and .xls files give error message that
program cannot find the file. Word or Excel opens and then I can click on
the icon and file will open or they will open from the open menu within the
program. They have worked in the past but suddenly stopped. Deleting the
icon shortcut and resending it from explorer do the same. I have run Norton
Registry Cleaner and no change.

A:Desktop Icon Shortcuts for Word, Excel don't work

Welcome to the TSG forums.
Have you tried doing a system restore?
If you spend a bit of time browsing the forums you will notice that most of us recommend NOT using a registry cleaner. They can cause many problems. Much more than they help.
Post back and let us know how the restore goes.

Ok, so I had recently uninstalled Mozilla Firefox. After I did, when ever I save a shortcut of a webpage to the desktop, it wont open without asking me either to browse the internet to find a program to open it, or choose one from a list. So, I choose IE to open it, check the appropriate box to always use that program, and it still doesn't work. Even the shortcut looks white and not like it used to. Any ideas?

I am using win xp home and have a problem that started a few weeks ago. The ie icon is not showing in the address bar and when I right click a webpage and make a shortcut for the desktop...the icon used is no longer the ie icon. When I right click the icon and choose properties.....change icon..I can change just that one to the ie icon. I also checked control panel..folder options...file types and htm and html are both showing the ie icon. I am not taling about special icons showing...am saying just a generic icon shows for all ie shortcuts and in the address bar.

Usually I can go to windows explorer and shift-right click any icon and choose *open with*...and choose the program and check the box to *always open with * but I can not get any shortcut or htm, html file to show the *open with* option...can't get any shortcut to open that way. I think if I could get that option..then all future htm and html shortcuts would show the ie icon.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried this?
To reset any incorrect files in the operating system in Windows XP do this:
Click on Start > Run and type in "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes) and Press Enter.
You will be asked to insert the Windows XP c.d.

The computer should reboot, if not, reboot and try it.

I searched the forum for this issue and came up empty. So I was wondering if anybody else has ever come across the issue of the ms word icon laying on top of all your desktop shortcut icons only and that the shared file folders in Explorer have ms pub icon instead of yje yellow folder icon. Already checked for a virus and there are none, spyware is clean, did the win2k update last sunday. Hint if I replace the shortcut icons with exe icons everything is good. So i you know the post I missed in my search just point to it, i'll appreciate it. Thanks Flixx.

A number of shortcuts on my desktop (always the same few, I don't know what they have in common) are appearing without their associated icon image. I tried rebuilding the icon cache, based on the tutorial here (and running the batch file):

Icon Cache - Rebuild

and it works for a boot or two, then it's back to blanks. If I move the said shortcuts to a folder, like the C Drive, the icons show up just fine, but move them back on the desktop, blank again. Creating new shortcuts is fine, but they go blank as soon as I move them to the desktop. And as I say, it is affecting only some of the shortcuts (diverse, not from the same sources); most are OK.

If rebuilding the icon cache isn't working, I am not sure what else to try. I had his problem in the past, every six months or so, and rebuilding the cache used to fix things for some months, but not any more.

Thanks for further help.

At first the problem wasn't so bad. I couldnt move Items on my desktop, when I tired the circle with a bar symbol came up and Icouldnt move anything on my desktop. Then while trying to solve that problem I unintentionally removed all my Icons from my desktop. The option that I belived caused this was found by right clicking on the deskttop but now since this happend right clicking on the desktop produces no reponse from the computer. Also I can still access all of my files and shor cuts from my desktop by going into the hard drive > users > then my profile (which is the only one) > then by opening the desktop file found there I can access what was on my desktop.

In closing I need to find a way to restore icons to my desktop with out using system restore. SO I dont have to go thru my hard drive

I have a weird thing with Icons, that I just can't get to work.

I'm gonna try to explain.
When I have installed 2 programs, Fraps and Avast Anti Virus, they automatically create an Icon on the desktop, but I don't want to keep those icons on the desktop, so I pin them to my start up menu and delete from desktop. But after I do that, they lose their Icon. So when I open the program it has no more icon, just like an Unknown file... What should I do..

A:Start Menu shortcuts lose icon?

Hello Aion, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You lost the icon in the Start Menu since you deleted that shortcut's source on the desktop. To keep the icon, you will need to either "move" the shortcut from the desktop to the Start Menu All Programs area, or pin the program's EXE file to the Start Menu instead.

Hope this helps,

Before any content is put into the folder, the desktop shortcut icon is the generic 'folder' style. Once graphics are put into the folder, the icon changes to show a 'folder-with-contents' - so far so good. A:Problem with shortcuts program icon in users account

In your own account, try rightclicking on the Program File's .exe to Send to Desktop.

It's likely that the program's installer writes the desktop icon to all User Desktops if it's installed for all users. But creating a shortcut in your User account should limit itself to your desktop.

I've managed to get myself into a bit of a mess. Not sure what this one is called, so I don't think I'll be able to find it in the other topics. Anyway, there's an icon in the taskbar that is a red hexagon with a white x that gives messages every once in a while. It puts shortcuts on the desktop that leads to ads and porn. It also opens popups. It then says to download antispy software to get rid of it. I tried using spybot and ad-aware. Anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it? (I'm using Windows XP SP1)

Greetings. I've been having this problem for several months and just can't get rid of it. When I plug in any storage device (USB stick, iPod nano, SD cards etc.) and open it all I see are shortcuts. And .Trashes folder always appears. I can open folders and then access files in these folders, but if a file is in the root of USB it will be categorized is unknown file and I won't be able to open it. I use cmd command (attrib -s -r -h X:*.* /s /d) so that my computer shows me files, but I have to do it every time. And it just duplicates files and folders. I also don't have Trash icon on my desktop. I use Avast Antivirus and update it regularly. When I scan USB drives it finds threats: Trashes and few more. It says it is a dropper and trojan virus. Deleting doesn't help because it is all the same next time I plug in USB drive. I tried formatting drives but it is still the same.

Hi everyone,

I have a problem that I hope I will be able to solve with your help. On my WinXP laptop, I used to have all the function keys assigned to programs to be executed when pressing F2, F3 etc. Now I have deleted those program files, and every time I press one of the function keys, Windows starts searching for that file, instead of doing the normal function (eg in Word 2003: F7 - check spelling). How can I change this back to normal?

Is there a way to get shortcuts to applications to work for every account on the computer? It doesn't matter if the application is in the shared folder, if everyone is listed as an administrator, or both.

I was installing Explorer 7 and it did not finish, but presented a note saying that the process was incomplete. What I read in Microsoft page is that possibly it was because my antivirus blocked the writing of some keys in the registry. The icons representing executables and shorcuts became blank, and I cannot execute any program. I downloaded several tools like registry cleaners but they are not recognized as executables. Also downloaded a ZIP file that, when unzipped, tried to edit the registry with some lines that were supposed to allow the recognitions of several extensions, but it did not work either. So I do not know what to do. Strangely enough, the old explorer works and that is how I am communicating with you.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

I spilled a glass of Pepsi over my laptop - a Compaq nx9110 - by accident a few weeks ago. Cleaned it up and apparently everything works again - all the keys work fine individually - except for shortcut combinations. I've got Windows XP sp1 and Ubuntu 5.10 on dual boot on the laptop. The shortcut problem only initially affected XP, then affected Ubuntu as well. CTRL+A is the only shortcut that works - CTRL+Z, CTRL+S, CTRL+V, CTRL+C, CTRL+enter (quick .com in Firefox), etc. do nothing. ALT is fine. Shift is fine. CTRL isn't, for some reason.

What are the chances it's a hardware problem, considering how every key still works on its own (and with left/right in the case of the two CTRL keys)? It's damned annoying, but I can't really afford to buy a new keyboard for it, and the hassle of finding a seller with this kb model in stock is hair-wrenchingly difficult. I just backed up my files and reformatted everything an hour ago (now finishing up reinstalling my drivers in Windows) to see if it might just be a software glitch, but the problem hasn't gone away.

Every single tech I've asked so far was stumped - no idea where the problem could be - the only suggestion I've had is to try plugging in another keyboard to see if it works, but the laptop doesn't have a PS/2 port, I don't have a USB keyboard, and I can't afford to splash out on one just now.

A:Keyboard shortcuts don't work

Update: I figured out how to get the control characters to work - I have to tap CTRL *then* hit the letter, like CTRL --> Z instead of CTRL + Z.

Still, I'd love to know why it's suddenly become timed and won't work together.

Anyone know how to lift the keyboard out of the Compaq nx9110 model laptop? I can't find ANYTHING on Google or in the manual. I'd like to give the membrane a clean but I can't because I can't see any way to get the keyboard out.

Hi guys - hope one of you can help me? I downloaded VLC Media Player and changed certain hot keys for instance I want "A" to make the soundfile skip a few seconds ahead and "S" to make it skip a few seconds back. But except from "Space" for on/off, none of the hot keys work. Not the preexisting or my new ones. Anyone knows what I'm doing wrong? (Im using Mac)

I've done something that seems to have 'turned off the desktop' - because when I try to call up a prog from a desktop shortcut I get this message;

The file does not have a programme associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel.

Can someone tell me how to get things working properly.

IE doesn't work properly ever since I tried Firefox. When I took Firefox off - two or three addons seem to have stayed on the PC (but I cant find them).

Second problem is that my web editor won't call up IE to view changes.

Hope someone can help.
