How to make Win8 make restore points automatically

Q: How to make Win8 make restore points automatically

Previously when I was using Windows 7, the system restore points were created automatically whenever I installed a new SW or made other similar system change. But it seems not the case in Win 8 any more.

I am a SW developer. Although I normally test our SW on virtual machines, but some other time I just install part of it directly on the development machine. The SW of course might have some problem. Today when I tried to restore my system to a status right before I installed the problem SW, I just found out that I don't have these restore points. The system indeed created some restore points automatically, but those don't seem to cover all the changes I made to the system. Is there a way to configure it? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How to make Win8 make restore points automatically

Maybe your restore point disk space allocation is inadequate to hold all restore points that might be created automatically. My record of restore points implies that restore points are being created for all SW installations, but the record does not go very far back in time.

Whenever I try to make a system restore point. This happens. It was working a few days ago.

The only thing I did today was installed Game Booster, Install Opera, Uninstall Sims 2, update Tune Up Utilities and used it to clean up my system.

I made sure Volume Shadow Copy is set to automatic in Services, but it still doesn't work.

EDIT: problem solved. I uninstalled game booster, opera, and tune up utilities and everything is back to normal. I think Tune Up Utilities was causing this problem.

Hi,

I know old restore points are deleted when new ones are made and the space reserved for it is filled up, but with windows automatically making backups whenever I install a program it becomes useless, ecpecially that it seems there is only room for 4 restore points on my system... (I checked the "show more restore points" theres nothing)

For example yesterday I was trying to make a game work, installing it many times, each time directx is installed automatically and a restore point is taken, so now all the restore points I have were made yesterday.

My question is how to stop windows from making restore points on its own and more importantly how to make these points last for ever (or atleast much much longer)

thanks.

For both Vista and Seven, Increase the allotted space for SR
System Restore - disk space - Vista Forums

You can go to task mangager and turn off the default once a week SR point.

At best they are deleted after 3 months, and I do not know of a way to stop restore points from being made automatically.

How far back in time does Win7 make restore points by default or at least what should the original factory setting be?

It's difficult to give a definitive answer on that one although I think the default setting is around 10% of your hard drive space, so the bigger your hard drive, the more restore points will be available.

Restore points are saved until the disk space System Restore reserves is filled up. As new restore points are created, old ones are deleted.

My last automatically System Restore Point automatically created by the passage of time was created 2013-01-23.

No further automatic system restore points are being created (that means not ever, not daily, not weekly, simply no longer created automatically by the passage of time since last January).

I do not see restore points automatically created by other programs, like Acronis 2014 or Kaspersky KIS 2014 which I installed last week. (But the problem goes way back to January, so these new versions are obviously not involved.)

System restore points are still automatically created by Windows Update and by nVidia driver updates.

System restore points can still be created manually.

The SR task is present in Task Scheduler.

SFC /SCANNOW found no problems.

System Restore is still turned on.

There is free disk space for restore points.

The computer is a Dell Studio 9000, aka XPS 435T, core i7 960.
Windows 7 Home Premium with all the standard Windows Updates.
KIS 2013, now KIS2014
Acronis 2013, then 2014, and currently uninstalled.

I have a problem with System Restore only keeping restore points 5 days back at the most. So for example, the oldest restore point I have currently is from September 6, 2007. I've had this Vista x64 install for around a month now. I should have restore points dating back to about August 1st or so.

I've got plenty of HD space too......around 500GB free I believe so that's not an issue. I don't have any viruses. I bet this is an easy fix, it's just that I don't know what that is. Vista is supposed to automatically make restore points every day doesn't it? According to this post at this site, Vista is supposed to save restore points for around 136 years. http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread82418.html

While I don't need it that long, I'd like it save them for around 6 months to a year or even whatever the default is supposed to be. I had a problem with a Windows update about a month ago. I think it was a security update or something. Anyway, I don't know which one or why, but it borked my system and I couldn't even boot, not even in Safe Mode. So I put the Vista x64 DVD in and went to use System Restore and I didn't have any restore points. I had no other choice than to reinstall Windows. I just want to know why it's doing this and how I can stop it before I have to use System Restore again and I have to reinstall again.

Thanks in advance!

Greetings all,

I have been doing alot of research on this forum the last couple of months and it has come in very handy as i get used to Windows 8 - which i might add, it's beginning to 'grow' on me.

My first installation on my 2009 Compaq Presario Duo-Core rig went beautifully - no problems whatsoever.

So, i thought, what the heck, let's see what happens when i run the Upgrade Assistant on my 2005 Dell Latitude D510. Assistant didn't seem to give any impression that my system was incompatible with Win8, so i went ahead and bought another copy to install.

Problem is, it went through the download, then the verification of the download and gave me an 'access denied' error. I tried it again with the same result. Next i tried the link from the invoice that said if you need to download Windows 8, click here. So i did. Long story short, it downloaded, verified OK then left me two options: Install Now or Install Later from Desktop. Hmmm...where's the option to created the DVD??? This was last night, it was late so i left it to today to install. Everything went well and my laptop, which was running WinXP Pro is now running Win8.

But...i'm still left in the dark as to how to get the .iso file to create a disk should i ever need it again. I need you gent/ladies to help me find it either on my hard drive somewhere (not in download file) The installer did not ask me for my key and there was a Windows.old file which i tried to delete, most of which i was successful but th... Welcome to Classic Shell

Client wanted me to put a new Win8 laptop into service. Microsoft Software Engineers must be taking hallucinogens, because Windows 8 look like a REALLY bad drug trip. Lots of swirly colors, and no rhyme or reason for anything. Almost advised the client to install Win7 over the top, until I found the link posted above. It was love at first sight. A start button, and familiar navigation options makes Win8 useable now.

I'm using the Vista/Win7 option, but the info blurb on Classic Shell says that it can emulate WinXP too, in case someone's mom got stuck with a brand new computer and she can't even check her email anymore.

Please post opinions if you try it, for other people to see.

A:Solution: How to Make Win8 Look Like Win7!

For many, Start8 works better as it allows you to boot directly to the desktop and even disable the Windows 8 "charms" and corner menus entirely. However, Classic Shell is highly configurable and some prefer it for this reason.

Both Lenovo and Samsung ship Windows 8 systems with a type of start menu. However, Microsoft is being obstinate that other users should have a ?pure Microsoft experience,? whatever the heck that means. Almost everyone that I've talked to who simply hates Windows 8 does so because of the "Metro" interface and its watered-down apps, not realizing that underneath it's a pretty good OS and that there are ways to get back a Windows-7-like interface.

Hello Everyone - it's been a while since I posted here, so I apologize for any errors I may make.

I have a Dell Inspiron Core I5 Windows 7 SP1 PC with Norton internet security.

My question is: what are the rules that govern when the system will make automatic restore points. I've read several threads here, and there seems to be multiple opinions, from "every 7 days", when volume shadow copy is started, when task scheduler has proper triggers and no conflicting conditions.

My PC wasn't creating restore points automatically. I tried changing the Volume shadow copy to automatic. I added a new task under SR to start at 3:30 PM (as a test), I checked the box to wake computer for this task. The system created two restore points hours apart once, but none since then.

I've attached screen shots showing all my settings, including one that seems to indicate the task did run, but no restore point can be seen for that time. NIS did show the system at an idle state at the time the tasks should have ran.

So to sum it up, do I have my settings incorrect? Is there a glitch in my system? How often should SR create automatic restore points (aside from program updates)?

SR has bailed me out a few times and is quicker than restoring from a system image which I do periodically, along with a separate file backup.

Any suggestions, help, explanations, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I have a similar problem. My computer is not creating restore points automatically (as I set in the Task Scheduler) and is not keeping more than two or three restore points

System restore points are created when a program installation calls for it (but not every program installation). I can also manually create restore points. An automatic restore point is apparently created every week. However, older restore points are not retained (yes, I have plenty of space allocated to system restore and the two restore points kept use only a small fraction of the available space.

I tried using the task scheduler to create a daily restore point, just so I can see what is going one. Task Scheduler tells me that these tasks finished successfully but do not show up in the list of restore points in System Restore or CC Cleaner.

Taipei, February 4th ? Linpus, a leader in the field of open source software in the consumer space, announced the release of a new application for Windows 8. Linpus, one of the most successful open source vendors in the notebook and consumer device market, has recently added Android and Windows applications to its product range. Linpus' focus with this application for Windows 8, Gesture2Launch, was to utilize touch gestures to give an easier and quicker way to launch apps across the traditional desktop and Metro mode. In many cases, up to 4 taps can be saved when, for example, using a gesture to turn off your computer.
Linpus Gesture2Launch works in this way: after running the application the interface has a number of predefined gestures (in the form of the letters of the alphabet) and actions to map these gestures to, including: applications and to various actions like restarting your device. You can then choose to link the action to the letter of the alphabet you feel most appropriate and then simply write that letter anywhere on the screen to launch. Besides restarting your devices, some of the things you can launch are: control panel, file explorer, Windows store, music, media playback actions like play/pause, stop, next, previous music/video ? and also shutdown, log out and wireless on/off.
?Besides reducing actions to launch applications, Linpus Gesture2Launch makes it easier from a number of other perspectives,? said Rita Jing, vice-president of sales. ?Findi... Read more

My WIN7 Ultimate x64 system restore does appear to be creating system restore points manually or automatically weekly (when it should in Win7).
When I manually create a system restore point it says it was successfully created but when I check there are no system restore points shown (either manual or auto).

I would like to make it light up between 6 pm to 6 am, and not light up between 6 am to 6 pm , but all I want for now is to light up at every restart.

Well, depending on what keyboard it is, I would imagine that if it lights up in daylight hours (extrordinarily usefull that is ) some gamer/modder whatever has modded it.
I'd google it and see whats floating around re mods for your board..

I tried setting it to download updates but to choose whether to install them or not and I believe they still got installed automatically, because the windows update icon in the notification area disappeared and also in my update history it showed that 2 important updates were installed on that particular day. I now chose the option to let me choose whether to download and install updates and will see what happens with this one? Thanks for any positive feedback!lol

A:How Do I Make Windows Update NOT Install Automatically?

If you want to double check your settings here is our tutorial with pictures.
Windows Update Settings - Change

From your description this is the way mine is set.
I manually check for updates once during the day just to be sure.

Is there a setting in Word 2007 that will automatically adjust font size so that the letters are as large as possible depending on the amount of text?

For example if I type just one letter it would use the maximum printable space on an 8.5"x11"
sheet; type another letter instead of making another page it would automatically adjust font size.

I want to be able to make quick signs/labels for use in the warehouse.

thanks

A:Is there a way to make font size automatically adjust?

Don't use any fixed font size text.
Instead, use WordArt that will automatically scale.

Hi,

I just got Warpia Stream HD VE edition,

I got it set up and everything, but I was wondering if I could make it so when it's showing on my TV, it automatically switches over to the TV sound.

And when I turn it off, if it could automatically go back to the computers speakers.

Is there anyway I could do this?

Thank you

A:Is there anyway I can make speakers switch to default automatically?

In many systems, the automatic selection is controlled by whether the HDMI cable is plugged in or not.

In my PC, the "speakers" are set as the Default playback device. I have a Radeon HD4850 video card and if I plug in an HDMI cable the HDMI automatically sets itself as the default playback device. If I unplug the HDMI cable it reverts back to the speakers. I also use this for my recording studio PC and if I have my USB connected recording interface device powered on (and connected) that is automatically set as the default playback device. When I power off the recording device it reverts back to the speakers.

A:What can I do to make Windows 10 not reboot and update automatically?

Hello ironfist,

If you like, you could set active hours for when to have Windows Update not automatically install updates and restart during.

Hi

I'd like to optimise windows such that it doesn't look for networks when I start up. I'd like to choose myself when to be signed in to network and when not to, just like I can open a program and then close it. At the moment if I disconnect my wifi connection it looks for a new automatically, and finds the very same and logs in to that one again. Is there any way to solve this?

Thx
Andreas

A:Make windows not sign in to wireless network automatically

Make a shortcut on your desktop for the WiFi network adapter then right click and select disable.

Double clicking enables it whenever you want.

Is there any way to make functions in a word table that will automatically and instantly update other cells as you work the same as excel does.

We are creating a user form and want the information entered to update other cells automatically without the user having to click on the cell in question and select "update".

Thanks,
John
