T430s: Slow after drop - how to isolate issue?

Q: T430s: Slow after drop - how to isolate issue?

Hi all, Dropped my T430s. I had the screen repaired. Windows runs, but all programs are extremely slow. Any ideas what could be wrong?I checked RAM and applied new thermal paste, ran chkdsk, which seemed to help a little but the issue persists. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just bought a new system from NCIX, with recommended specs above (can give full details if required). From the start, windows would "hang" occasionally. When this occurred, the system was completely stuck - no hard drive activity; Ctrl-alt-delete gave no response; only option was a hard restart.
Upon restart, would boot for both safe mode and if I started windows normally.

I attempted to run chkdsk/f/r upon restart twice; both times it also hung at stage 4 (10%), freezing for about 30-45 minutes before giving a BSOD and restarting.

The second time it restarted out of a blue screen, windows failed to boot, and I ran start-up repair as recommended by windows. The attached .dmp file is from the second blue screen coming out of chkdsk.

Analyzing the .dmp file, it looked like a driver issue, so after updating all drivers to no avail, I attempted to reinstall windows. Windows failed to install (!) the first time, but it managed to "repair" the old install enough to let me boot windows normally.

I immediately ran memtest and SeaTools to check both the memory and the hard drive, with no errors reported by e... Read more

Hey guys, I hope you can help. Normally I'm pretty decent with fixing my own machines, but this one is evading me. Recently (a week or two ago, probably after an update) I keep receiving a pop-up error stating that "Windows update manager has stopped working..." which stays for a few seconds, disappears, then pops up again a minute or two later. It also seems to be slightly dependent on what I'm doing with my laptop at a certain time (i.e. when I'm watching something using VLC, the pop ups seems to be more frequent - might be just coincidental).

Anyway, I have tried multiple things such as Microsoft's Fixit tool, changing the windows update settings and to no avail. I believe the following log from the event viewer is the culprit, and hope someone with a little more knowledge than me can decipher and lend me a hand. I'm trying to avoid a refresh/reinstall at all costs, so if you can help me out, I appreciate it a lot!

Ok, How do I get this T430s to recognise ONLY the nVidia graphics? I have it set to nVidia only in the BIOS, However, this thing INSISTS on using the pathetic HD4000 graphics when trying to play a game. This was easy to do for the T420. Why wont this work for the T430s? What I've done:Install ONLY the nVidia graphics drivers.... I still wants to use the "generic" VGA driver for everything. It forces me to use the nVidia panel to list games for use with the nVidia graphics. This doesn't always work. Is there a fix for this nightmare?

Hi, I encounter the following issues with my Thinkpad T430s:- sometimes the mouse pointer starts moving on its on, always towards the same direction and always at the same speed. Rebooting temporarily resolves the issue until it occurs again. Reducing the sensitivity in the driver software does not have any impact. Pressing the trackpoint and letting go does nothing to stop it. - the left mouse button acts like a weird combination of a left click + some function that brings up context menus, if available (e.g. on desktop). This happens using the trackpoint, touchpad and sometimes even when using an external mouse. - Right mouse button does not function at all. No matter what function is assigned to it in the driver software, it does not work. External mouse works. All this ONLY happens if the trackpoint is ENABLED in BIOS. If I disabled the trackpoint in the BIOS, touchpad and all mouse buttons work fine. I tried Windows 10 and Windows 7. The problems occur under both operating systems using different driver software. Therefore, I do believe this to be a hardware issue. Anyone has experienced this issues and knows a good way to fix it? Thanks in advance!

I have  bought Lenovo T430s laptop recently. The main problem is that it came win Ubuntu OS. I formated all the partition data and tried to install Windows 7. There was a "A required CD/DVD drive driver is missing" issue, where a windows prompts asking me to point the directory where to load that driver. It's on that step, where I should select where to install the drive, so I tought it was the HDD drivers. I tried with UEFI/Legacy tricks such as forcing my BIOS to use UEFI only or LEGACY only. I also tried to change the HDD options from AHCI to Compatability and many variations. Well at first time, i tried with putting the chipset drivers to usb disk and point the driver then uncheck the "Hide drivers that are not compatible with my computer" and tried to force it use my drivers. Tried with different drivers and every time I got stuck to the same problem. Then I tried with Windows 8 and Windows 10, It just installed without problem. Later I had issue with my Cooling Fan. It stoped working, So i returned my laptop to the shop, where I bought the laptop. They said that they sent it to a service and the service changed the HDD and the motherboard. The HDD was Seagate 320GB, now it is HITACHI 320GB. The motherboard is changed, because previous motherboard had Compatibility options, that was suited for windows 8, now it's gone (may be old BIOS chip/software or newer, I dont' know, my BIOS version is 2.7). So after I got my laptop back (repaired) I got it with new H... A:T430s Windows 7 Installation Issue

You need to add the USB 3.0 drivers to the WIndows 7 installation media.  There are several threads on this topic here on the forums.  It can be done manually (a real pain...) or with one of several OEM tools.
Here's the Intel one:  https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25476/Windows-7-USB-3-0-Creator-Utility
You may also need to make the flash drive UEFI-bootable if that's you preferred installation mode.  That involves some file manipulation, but not a complete rebuild of the media.

I've had my t430s for almost a year now and have been basically happy with it/no issues thus far. However, this morning I went to boot it up and it's completely unresponsive - no lights when plugged into A/C, no fan whir, nothing.  I've already tried the 30 sec power drain trick, verified the charger works, used an alternate lenovo charger(from a t430),removed the battery, both RAM cards, SSD, CMOS and attempted to identify the issue using the various steps recommended in the user guide, but to no avail.I suspect this to be a MB issue or possibly power socket related.  Alas the laptops factory warranty expired in June as it was purchased secondhand(and registered by me after purchase).  Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

A:T430s won't power on - possible motherboard issue?

Well, I have replaced quite a few power jacks on T420s/T430s machines, but if that were the problem, you would have gotten low-battery warnings ahead of time.  When you disconnected the CMOS battery, did you let it sit a few seconds before plugging it back in?  I always let it sit for 5 seconds and then I press the power button 2 or 3 times before putting it back.  This drains all the capacitors.  (I assume you know that the main battery also needs to be out and the machine unplugged.)

As this is my first post,  Hello all! I'm a longtime Thinkpad user, appreciating my previous T60 and T400 for their repairability and durability.  I've just bought a used thinkpad t430s, and I bought a battery for it as it didn't come with one. My issue is, the battery worked fine the first couple times I used it, but now it drains instantly if I unplug from the wall. After I restart the machine, the battery says 0% (charging), and after a short while (10+ minutes) returns to claiming fully charged (100%). So far, I have updated the bios, installed the lenovo power management software, installed the lenovo power management driver, tried removing the microsoft acpi driver without the battery in, then turning off and trying to start on battery  (no luck turns off immediately as well, critical low battery error). I also did this thing someone recommended for battery trouble where you shut down the computer and remove the power sources, then hold down the power button for a minute. The battery health is good, it has had three charge cycles, and this number isn't going up with my little drop downs to 0% and back up to 100% whenever I unplug the machine. I would like help in figuring out if this is a problem with the battery, hardware, or software of the computer. I am running windows 7 pro 64 SP1. i7-3520M @2.9ghz. Thanks in advance!  Ryan

A:t430s battery charge issue

Hi and welcome, moreryanIs the battery Lenovo genuine, has Lenovo FRU p/n?Have you get it from the Lenovo related store?Could you make a snapshot of the battery surface labels with quality enough to recognize labels, symbols? As you can't publish images here, in the post yet, provide an external link. Also, as your OS is win7 and I hope Lenovo Power Manager application is installed, what are the values of the second half of the battery parameters (manufacturer name and followed) PM shows in the Battery tab? Make a snapshot as well.Answers and images are needed to understand whether the battery is faked since the battery for T430 should have HW authentication.

Recently I have been gifted with a T430S Thinkpad on which I made a fresh installation of Windows 7 Home. From time to time the mouse has a strange behavior : it operates fine except to scroll in dropdown lists. I have to use the keybord to do that an select an item. When it happens the touch pad doesn't work anymore. Switching  with an other mouse doesn't solve the problem. I have to stop and restart the laptop to recover the normal behavior of the mouse. Installing last drivers from Lenovo download center had no effect. It seems other users encountered a similar issue. Some of them got rid of it after a BIOS upgrade. Infortunately  I didn't find any BIOS to download. The only files avalaibable are just utilities to install a new BIOS. Mine is 2.05 dated 12/11/2012. So my question is where to get a more recent BIOS and do you think an update will fix the issue. Thanking you in advance

So the Internet on my T430s recently stopped working, and every time I try to troubleshoot I'm told to turn on wireless capability using my wireless switch, which is definitely in the on position. (I've even tried turning it to the off position just in case I'm really stupid and have them mixed up, but no Internet there either.) What I've done so far: 1) Fn+F5 gives me the message "The hardware wireless radio switch must be in the on position to use the wireless radios," which is unhelpful since it's in the on position. 2) Going into Device Manager and checking Network Adapters tells me that I have 4 adapters, and the Properties menu for all 4 says that "This device is working properly." I'm not sure which one is being used for my main connection, but all the ones listed say they're working. 3) I did some Googling and found some random sources that said you could use BIOS to override the hardware switch and turn wireless on. Wasn't able to find anything, so I'm wondering whether that doesn't apply for the T430s. Not super familiar with BIOS so I might be using it totally wrong. 4) I opened the computer up to take a look at the wireless radio switch. Didn't see anything clearly wrong with it, but I doubt I'd be able to detect a visible problem even if one were present.  So yeah, I'd appreciate if someone could help me with the issue. I'd prefer to solve it on the software side of things, so if someone could tell me a way to override the hardw... Read more

Hi all, I'm not most learned when it comes to tech so bear with me if my terminology or knowledge is incorrect, but out of desperation I've decided to post here. A few days ago I tried to boot my T430s but windows boot manager showed me error 0xc00000e9 before I could even reach the Windows 10 screen. I then went into Lenovo diagnostics and ran a quick test where the results showed that everything passed except Smart status Smart short self testDrive self testRandom seek testFunnel seek testTargeted read test Google seems to suggest that this is hard drive / hard disk drive issue - I don't really know how to fix this. I'm thinking of downloading Windows 10 setup onto a USB or CD and then trying to see if I get past the boot screen. From the information given, do you think my data has been lost or is this the kind of error where data can be retrieved? I never backed up important documents, it's safe to say I have learned my lesson. I appreciate any advice RegardsSM

I'm using an old version of Adobe Audition (version 1.5) with Windows 8 and it works fine except for one thing - I can't drag and drop audio files into the program.

If I change the value of the EnableLUA registry key to 0, which completely disables User Account Control, drag and drop works in Audition but then of course Metro apps will not work.

Running Audition with administrator privileges doesn't allow drag and drop.

Is there any way to fix this? Any way to make Audition exempt from UAC in some way, as it seems to be that that's preventing drag and drop from working?

A:How to fix this drag and drop/UAC issue?

You can try compatibility mode. I said "try" because it might or might not work.

You'll need to specify, in what i found out, Windows XP SP3 compatibility and see if that alone (no run as admin) will do better.

Firstly if I have placed this in the wrong category I apologise I am new to forums and this is my first attempt, after receiving a new laptop several months ago I began experiencing wi-fi disconnection issues at times the indicator on the system tray indicates limited connectivity, that's when I know that I am about to lose the connection I use windows 8.1 so when clicking on the wi-fi signal strength indicator in the system tray the network status dialogue slide's in from the right of the screen where I pre-empt the drop off by switching the wi-fi off & on again. This can happen up to three times a day and becomes very irritating if anyone reading this post can offer any help ideally, with a DIY solution I would be so grateful, actually any help / suggestions would be gratefully received. Thank you.

I've noticed quite a few threads relating to internet connection issues, but none of them seem to describe my problem. That problem being is my internet connection works fine most of the time, but periodically, the connection will drop for a few milliseconds, just long enough to reset the connection that any program or system has operating. Not really too annoying w/ websurfing, but when online gaming or during a long download, that disconnect drops you out of your game/dl. This problem has been with the DSL since I first purchased it years ago. The only way I have to test this error is to leave some program which sits online and wait for it to trip offline.

It's been a head-scratcher, and I've been testing out some changes, all to no avail. I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to networking, so I'm hoping I could pick some of ya'lls brains.

I'm posting here because as I was searching on google for some ideas to fix the issue, I came across another thread on the networking section of these boards where the analyst had the user post their hijack log here to ensure that it was actually a network related problem and not some sort of malware issue. Anyway, here's my other thread:

And for convenience sake the contents of it:

For a while now my laptop has had an issue where its connection to the internet is periodically dropped. I've been lazy, but finally took the time to troubleshoot my network and determined it's a problem with the laptop specifically.

The dropping happens regardless of use of the laptop, it can be idle or I can be actively talking to people on AIM (it's not specifically AIM either; I get dropped on mIRC as well) and have my conversation interrupted or have messages not sent for either person. There are times when the problem gets really bad and others where it's much more tolerable.

Anyway, I really have no clue where to proceed from here. I'm running Windows XP and have all networking related updates from windowsupdate.com, I've ran adaware... Read more

Johnwill has recommended now for my problem specifically that I get a hijackthis report evaluated, so if you guys get the time I'd greatly appreciate it. If you need a fresh report let me know.

Try this procedure to isolate the offending process:

Task Manager:
Also, you can monitor the system for excessive resource consumption. To do this, open up Task Manager by right clicking on the Task Bar.
Then select the Processes tab.
Then select the "Show processes from all users" button (in the lower left)
Then select the View menu item, then select "Select columns"
In the Select columns window, place checkmarks next to I/O Reads and I/O Other.
Click OK to accept the changes.
Resize the Task Manager window so you can see the most of the columns.
Wait for the system to freeze.
Look at all of the columns to see if there's anything that looks excessively high - if so, let us know the Image name of the process.
FWIW - System Idle Process is supposed to have high CPU readings - anything else with high CPU readings is an issue.

We have a few hundred 260's and 460's in our school district and we have been having chronic issues with them suddenly dropping all port functionality. We use them in tandem with the One Link Dock + and for seemingly no reason, all of the ports will cease functionality, loses LAN internet, drops smart board, and any other usb device that is plugged into itself or the dock. Interestingly we don't lose charging capability. We thought it may have been dock related but we then had it happen to someone that doesn't use a dock. This is driving us nuts as the teachers are halted by these tech issues. The only known way we can fix it is by restarting, we have not detected any pattern to it's cause. We have tried re-installing every usb driver, root hub, chipset, changed power saving options, replaced every single peripheral in the room that is used with the laptop, re-imaged, and still it continues to happen. If there is a known fix for this please share, thanks!

I appear to have a drag & drop problem when moving items around my start menu. All other drag & drop events appear to work without any issues, and the computer is fast and functioning well.

I have a number of folders on my start menu which I use to group shortcuts for ease of use (graphics, utilities etc). For some time now I experience a problem when dragging either new app's shortcut folder from the main start menu list to one of these folders, or dragging a shortcut from folder to folder.

After I drag an app's folder into a another location, the app title appears in the new location, but when I open it's folder it shows as empty. Not onlt that, but once in the new location, I can't delete the shortcut folder, nor can I drag it back to another location, with error message " Cannot create or replace 'xxxx': Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use."

Any ideas what may be causing this. The system is kept clean with regular scans and virus protection. Other than this the computer is working very well. It's just an annoyance.

Did try a drag & drop registry fix which didn't work.

Any constructive suggestions welcomed.

Hi all,

I have Outlook 2003 and for some reason I have lost the ability to drag emails from the inbox to a selection of personal folders.

I can right click on the email and 'move to folder' but cannot just drag them to the folder.

I have had this available for years and just now it has stopped.

Office 2003 sp1 installed, cannot instal sp2 due to network constraints.

A:Outlook 2003 Drag and Drop issue.

Having the same issue as Saffa. I've made no changes to Outlook 2003 SP2 but am unable to drag n drop emails to my personal folders. I can right click and 'Move' only. I've tried archiving, creating new folders and setting the Kerbros security without any luck.

Any suggestions? Saffa did you ever resolve this issue?

I would suspect the graphics drivers, and try reloading them. It could be a "layer" issue where that layer is not displayed.

What Windows version? If this has just started, try a restore to a previous date if XP.

Hi guys. Got a really weird issue that's been happening with my start menu lately. Basically what happens is when I try to rearrange the pinned icons on the Start Menu by drag and drop it doesn't work properly. Like I try to move something to the top and it goes to the middle, from the middle to the bottom and it goes somewhere in between. It's ridiculously frustrating. I have tried unpinning and re-pinning everything, still no luck.

Any ideas?

Ok, for my second post int 4 minutes.

I'm running an ASUS Z96S laptop, 8600 Nvidea card (drivers are up to date, I checked yesterday), P4 3.2 GHz processor. 2 Gig or ram. By all accounts this should be a screaming machine right? For the most part it is.

My problem comes in when I'm running Word, or Excel, or other basic programs. As an example, when I click on "Tools" in the menu bar, the drop down menu slowly fades over 2-3 seconds then pops up, so I can access the options. It happens with all the menu bar options and when I right click on to open up a menu as well. It's not a critical problem but definitely a nuisance.

Any ideas?

A:Slow drop down menu's

this is just for starters it may solve you issues

now what i need to do is go to your (device manager)

now once there you will want to select from the toolbar of the window(veiw) then a drop down menu / from it you will select (show all hidden devices)

now if you see any (red or yellow) quotation marks , make a note of what they

now go to the (event veiwer) this is thru the (administrator tools) in the control panel
here you will find 3 to 4 subcatagories

you will want to check each of them for this is where windows keeps track of all errors
now you will want to make notes of the errors that have been recorded ( you do not have to make notes of double entries just of the dates of their happenings & how many there is)
you will get more information on the errors if you (right) click them / then select properties

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

For some reason the drop down menus on all my programs have all suddenly slowed down and I have to run my mouse pointer over them to see what the menu options are. Any ideas what the cause could be? I've recently cleared some space on my disk, so maybe I accidentally moved an important file - I don't think so, but it's a possibility!

A:Slow drop down menus

Check Task Manager to make certain something hasn't pegged your CPU usage to 100%.

Check Event Viewer. Report chronic, consistant and/or significant errors from both Application and System.

Hey guys, sorry to bother you all, but ive been at this for a couple of days now and ive literally got no ideas left.... Anyway here's whats happening, all of which started suddenly yesterday:

- I can't drag and drop icons anywhere on the computer, desktop, other folders, etc.
- Firefox plays up quite badly. Being that i cant move the window around, I can't resize, and often i can't close the window without going into the task manager.
- In VLC, I can't do much of anything, cant change volume, can't choose a time or any of that, and again can't close the window without task manager.
- PS3 Media Server, can't do anything.
- Ocasionally, everything becomes unselectable and the only way to get it back is to ctrl+alt+del, and close the window.

And here's what I've tried to fix it:
- 3 separate virus scans
- 2 different spyware scans
- Ran CCleaner
- Checked "enable context menus and dragging and dropping"
- Unchecked auto arrange
- Formatted the partition with windows on it (the others are just storage)
- Updated various drivers, mobo, keyboard/mouse, processor
- Reinstalled Java (which i did cause it seemed like most things that use java were playing up)

With a little playing around I found out that for some reason, logging out of the current user and logging back in fixes the problem for a little bit, between 5 mins and an hour.

I'm really at a loss of what else to do, if anyone has any ideas I would be very V... Read more

Finally found why unchecking the selection box in System Properties > Advanced Settings > Performance Options > Visual Effects > "Use Drop Shadows For icon Labels On The Desktop" doesn't work to disable the drop shadows under the desktop icons.

In addition to unchecking that option, you ALSO have to:

Go to Windows 10 Settings Panel > Personalization > Colors > (scroll down to the bottom) > and TURN OFF the button that says " Make Start, taskbar, and action center transparent"

Then ReBoot.

Voila! No more fugly drop shadows under the desktop icons.

Ever since i've updated to Windows 10 i've been having an issue with permissions which im unable to fix.

Basically all of my software and files located on a non-system harddrive appear to be restricted in one way or another despite the fact that i've manually set all of the permissions and made myself an owner of all files.

Here are the examples of issues i've experienced:

1) I can't run any software i've installed on that hard drive unless im running it as administrator. This includes GOM player, Adobe Photoshop, Filezilla, Steam and other applications.

2) I can't drag and drop files from that hard drive to or from installed applications like GOM player or Adobe - it just won't let me since the cursor changes into a cross.

3) I couldn't use archives and drag and drop files from and to archives without a warning about "harmful files" popping up constantly until i installed winrar on a system disk.

4) Some files gotten locked if they were downloaded using utorrent or any other application which downloads files. I think i was able to fix that by editing permissions and security settings in gpedit.msc and explorer though.

Is there a reason why this keeps happening?

Is it possible to isolate one IE window from another?
I am working on at 7-8 IE browser windows, each window with a different page loaded. I do not use tabs because I need to see all the pages at once (on a multi monitor system). The BIG problem is: if one window crashes it affects all the other opened windows; they all close :(. The only way I can work now is having 5 different browsers installed (IE8, FireFox, Opera, Safari, Google Crome), but this is not a real option because only one can be set as default + I use an online bookmark service and when I click a link it opens in a new window of the default browser.
How can I set things up so every time a new window of IE is opened it stays completely isolated (treated as another application)?

A:Isolate IE Windows

I have nearly the same problem. Dual monitors are on my system. I have a list of hyperlinks in a Word Document or Excel Speadsheet on one monitor. I click one hyperlinklinkin my Word Doc and IE8 "Auto-Minimizes" the Word program or Excel if I use a hyperlink. There has to be a way to shut off this feature/mistake. I use the Chrome Browser and have no such problem with Word or Excel. It took a while to realize it is IE8 minimzing the Word or Excel.

I wish i could be more help. But I hope your query leads to my answer.

I have a video clip which I would like to isolate the audio in, and save it as a file.
It was recommened to me to try using the program Audacity. I tried doing so and got close to my goal (I think). When I imported the file it played it back as audio only and I assume I could have saved it. However, the audio was filled with pops and hisses that effectively ruined it.

So, is there any other way to go about this or possibly some settings I could change in Audacity?

Thanks in advance!

A:Isolate Audio

Hi NMajik, welcome to BC.
Audacity has a noise removal tool in the effects menu and you could also use the wave editor.
Unfortunetly it's time consuming and you'll never get "all" the noise out anyways.
If this movie's audio plays normally (without noise) while watching it on your computer, I have a very small program that is no longer available that will record directly from your sound card and save it as a .wav file in the folder of your choice. It never fails. If you would like it, PM me with your e-mail addy and I'll send it to you with a brief explanation on how to use it.
