Q: Laptop keeps dropping wifi signal, computer or Windows 10?

I have to replace my Sony VAIO that ran Windowns 7 because of the graphic card kicked the bucket. This new Dell laptop "supposed" to be better and faster but there's one problem - it keeps dropping wifi signals.

The Sony with win 7 did drop signals but it was more like a once or twice a day sort of thing. This one, it drops signals every few minutes. Sometimes it comes back on its own in matter of seconds, other times, I have to troubleshoot to bring it back, while the odd times, I just have to sit tight to wait for it to miraculously recover. ***In fact, I finished typing my post a minute ago and when I hit "submit" the wifi dropped and now I am typing a second time.***

We have other wireless devices in the house but none of them has the same issue. The desktop also runs win 10 but it's wired to the network so never a problem.

I don't know much about computers but one thing I know is that nothing else has changed other than a new laptop with a different OS. Is dropping signals a common problem with win 10 or should I blame my computer?

Hi guys,
wonder if anyone can help me , all of a sudden (past two days) my laptop Lenovo y70 brand new has been having trouble with signal , it goes from 5 bars to 2 then back again every 30 seconds , i normally use my laptop for gaming and its been fine untill today for example i can no longer log into World of warcraft it just gets stuck on connecting.

I have tried to call my provider "BT" they said everything is fine
I have tried restarting my router ect ( BT home hub)
I recently got a wireless mouse i tried removing that in case it was interfering but still same.

any help please?

I'm using a new Asus AC68U router. My home network includes, among other items, my desktop and my laptop (a Dell XPS 15). The laptop occasionally drops the wifi on the 2.4 GHz band. Everything else on the network handles both bands fine. The laptop has been holding well on the 5Ghz band. How do I determine with the 2.4 Ghz band if the problem is the laptop, the router--or both? How do I diagnose this problem? I should mention that all the laptop and Asus drivers are up to date. Thanks.

sir, i am Muhammad Ehsan, i want to ask a question that i use evo and use internet on it but when i do window to laptop and plug in evo it shows evo for a day and run the internet but after some time the laptop do not show evo signal as evo do

I have dual boot W7/Linux x64 PC tower.

I mainly use Linux but both OS are problematic as far the wifi dongle is concerned.

I plug the dongle into a cable for easy access but over the past week the dongle is loosing its signal.

I've tried different sockets and cables, done a bios update, and also tried the dongle in another PC in which it works no bother at all.

I've tried other dongles in the tower and the bother persists with both W7 and Linux.

I even connected the front usb sockets and the problem is there too.

My suspicion is a faulty usb controller on the motherboard (GA M61SME S2L) and the first issue I've ever had with a Gigabyte brand motherboard.

I will note that there is a broken ground wire on the ATX plug but its been broken for months and the dongle issue is very recent.

Just before doing a board change, are there any suggestions at what to look at?

I started having an issue with my laptop lately, when i open lid more than 90 degree wifi signal drops drasticlly and as soon as i close it back to 90 degree or less wifi signal goes back to max bars, I opened my laptop once just to check if antenas are disconected or something but they were in place and they looked OK i didn't spot anything, does anyone know what could be the problem. The wifi signal on my Dell Inspiron 5000 series laptop keeps dropping every ten minutes or so. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas to fix this. If any more information required just ask. I've tried updating the drivers and forgetting the network and retrying it. I am at a loss.

Even though I have a good signal everywhere in my house - at least 3 bars but usually 4-5 bars out of 5 - I have found that my internet cuts out repeatedly for at least 10-15 seconds at a time. The other only laptop that connects to this router runs on Vista and has the same problem despite being only 3 feet away from the router itself and the router seemingly never giving any indication that the signal dropped (or at least we can't catch it because it happens before we know it). Sometimes, the signal cuts out multiple times an hour. I constantly see my Yahoo and MSN messengers automatically signing me back in after being cut off for a bit and it gets bothersome with the popping main messenger windows and unrecoverable conversations, in addition to other annoyances.

My router is a refurb Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 v3 that I have been using with almost no problem for about 4 months now. I had an old laptop running on XP and a different laptop running Vista when I lived in DC and I never had this problem. Now that I'm back in Chicago, have a new laptop (see link above) and ever since I set up my router, I can't seem to stay connected. Any idea what could be doing this?

A:Good wifi signal keeps dropping

Wireless interference is the most likely cause of the disconnects. Do you detect any other wireless networks? If so, are any on the same (or close) channel as yours?

If the signal is actually dropping--can't be detected--the router is probably defective. Make sure that is has ventilation and is not overheating.

Windows 10 (had the same issue on Win 7) HP EliteBook Laptop Intel 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 I am constantly dropping the wifi signal on this laptop. I dont believe it is the modem as I have checked my phone when I have lost the signal and the phone can still surf the net. I have also checked other devices and they seem to be working fine. I notice it the most when I am playing a game or streaming video. Here are a few options:
 
Change the power setting on the device:
 
Device Manager
Locate your wireless card and right click>Properties>Power Managment,
uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn this device off to save power"
 
If nothing then:
 
Open Command Prompt(As Admin) and type:
 
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconifg/release
ipconfig/renew
 
 
If nothing still then:
try resetting your Winsock settings and disable IPv6 (unless you need it)
 
Reset Winsock:
 
Start up notepad and copy and paste this into notepad:
 
@echo off
netsh winsock reset
netsh winsock reset catalog
netsh int ip reset reset.log  
echo You now have to reboot your PC!   
pause
 
Then save it on your Dessktop as "winsockreset.bat" (or whatever you please) just make sure it's a .bat file,
Save on desktop
Close Notepad
Run it.
 
Try Them out one by one and see if any of those fix the issue. Goodluck and let us know!

I have a Netgear CG3000D-RG cable modem through Charter, and the connection is absolutely perfect when connected with an ethernet cable, but any device connected with wifi constantly drops out (even in the same room)...sometimes every 10 or 20 minutes, but just as often it will happen over and over constantly. Disconnecting and then reconnecting fixes the connection entirely until the next drop out. It doesn't get slow or anything, it's either on or off.

Any ideas? Maybe a setting I'm not aware of? Or is this a hardware failure? The last thing I want to do is "rock the boat" with Charter because I'm afraid tampering with equipment might make my whole connection unstable again, like I've had so much trouble with in the past.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file to the faulty PC and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

I have a Gateway laptop model NE56R31u with Windows 8. I've had it a little over a year and it has worked fine up until the last few months. First it started taking a while to acknowledge a wifi signal when I would turn my computer on. Where it was instant before it was now taking anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It did this for about the last 3 months. Now, it will completely drop my wifi connection at random. It happens every day and anywhere from every 5 minutes to 3 hours sometimes. I'm sure its not a problem with my router or anything to do with my internet service because it happens at my work as well. I have 8 signals close enough there to show up in my networks and when it drops it, it won't recognize any of them. I have to restart it each time for it to connect again. All of the settings in my network adapter are as they have always been and I checked to see if the drivers may need updated but I have the latest version. Can anyone help?? Thanks!

I have some issues with my home network. I have Macs (2 laptops and 1 desktop), iPhones (4S,5,5S), an Android (Droid Razor Max HD), an iPad (3rd gen), a Raspberry PI and a desktop PC running Windows 7. I am able to use the network very well with all devices except for the Windows 7 tower. It seems to disconnect randomly and when all other devices are working perfectly fine. I am using Comcast xfinity modem/router which works well for everything but the windows 7 PC. Any suggestions or requests for files/logs would be greatly appreciated. This has been driving me crazy. This problem appeared sometime around the end of November possibly because of an Update? I am running the latest driver for my Wifi Card (TP link 4800).

Whike on my laptop, I can be in the same room as the router (LinksysWireless-G w/ speedbooster), or I can be upstairs. Or we cold be at a hotel, and the signal just drops.

Any ideas what could be done to resolve this? I ma running Win Xp serv pack 3.

Hello,

I have a small Edimax router (BR-6258n) that I bought a year ago.
For the past year, it has worked fine with my phone, computer, printer, and tablet connecting to it fine. It was setup in a building with Ethernet in each room and I plugged it in and set it up.
Now I moved into a new building still with Ethernet ports in each room but also building wide Wi-Fi. I like to have my own network so I wanted to continue using the router. So in my new building I set it up as last time but every time any one of my devices (all same as last year) connects, they lose signal very quickly. Then I have the issue where devices simply will not connect. They try but fail.
I know a bit about networking but I have run out things to try. I have updated firmware on the router and updated drivers on my devices. I have tested everything from the power adaptor to the Ethernet cable and the Ethernet jack (which does work with my computer). I have gotten a router replaced through warranty and I am still having this issue.
I am guessing it has something to do with the people managing the internet (which I have no control over). At this point, I am guessing there is little I can do to get this to work since it is beyond my own network. As I am still very much interested in getting my router to work, but I guess, right now I am more curious as to why I am having this issue and learning about the issue. A few months ago, I upgraded from laptop from Windows 7 to 10, and have been using it with no internet issues. A few days ago, I did a complete fresh reinstall of Windows 10, so it basically wiped my computer then installed 10. I've found a lot of benefits to doing this - it's speeded things up dramatically, and I'm happy. However, my internet connection has become patchy.

It appears to be random but every now and then, my WiFi will just drop out. Sometimes it'll reconnect after 30 seconds, sometimes it won't reconnect at all, and I'll have to manually disconnect and reconnect. It might happen a few times an hour, or a few times a day, but it does appear to be getting more frequent.

I don't think it's a router problem, as there are a lot of other devices using WiFi, and none of them drop out at all. The other devices are my phone, the wife's phone, the wife's Chromebook, the TV, the Sky box (wired), and my daughter's Kindle. Not all of these will be turned on, and sometimes the phone's are using mobile network, but I do know only my laptop has these WiFi issues.

My uneducated diagnosis is that perhaps it's a driver issue, caused by reinstalling Windows and not having the right driver files or updates. Another thought is that perhaps there's too many things connecting and for some reason, it's causing an IP conflict with just my laptop. I attach a list of connected devices. Which is your wireless station as there are 2 bt ones both on channel 11 and one stronger than the other that can kill your connection. BT home hubs are a pain as they are normally set to auto so they swap channels on there own problem is if there is another one close they both switch back onto the same channel so block each other again. If you have an andriod phone get wifi analyzer from the store this shows whats close and whats the best channel to set your router.

I am experiencing a a weird problem with my wifi!

I recently bought a netgear n300 wnr2200 router. The first day I set up the network and everything worked fine ( my ISP don't require any passwords etc, standard automatic set up - basically just typing a SSID and a password ( WEP))

The Internet worked perfectly and my iPhone, iPad, ps3 all connects without any problems whatsoever! without any more management than typing password

My laptop, acer aspire 3820tg (windows 7) worked perfectly the initial day. After this it struggles to connect. I will sometimes get the "could not connect to ...." message. Sometimes using the troubleshoot it wil fix the problem by itself. Most times not,

What is weird is that even if I get a connection I will at random intervals get " local access only" or completely dropping the connection. ( then it usually will not connect again) He wifi signal is 100%. I'm not able to make it work in a stable fashion. I have tried updating to the latest network driver for my laptops broadcom wifi adapter (from acer driver site) but this changed nothing. Turning on/off the wifi adapter does not help. Rebooting sometimes helps but it's completely random. I have an HP Envy laptop running Windows 8.1, with an i7, 8 Gig of RAM and an Intel 2230 wireless receiver.
My WiFi connection will be fine for about 5 - 10 minutes and then will suddenly drop out. The laptop doesn't disconnect from the network, but I lose all access to the internet. Other devices are fine, so I'm pretty sure it isn't the router or the incoming connection to it (the status lights don't change either). I've got a very good signal, so it isn't that.
When the connection goes, disabling then re-enabling WiFi often fixes it, but not always. Even more confusingly, the Ethernet does the same thing (which makes me think it isn't a fault with the WiFi card after all).
I've tried changing the power settings in the device properties of the receiver - i.e. unchecking 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power". This seemed to work for a while, but the problem has reappeared (and the boxes are still unchecked). Also tried reinstalling the WiFi card and its drivers: no dice.

I'm at my wit's end. Anything which requires a steady signal - e.g. Skype or online gaming - is obviously impossible, which is very annoying. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the problem and how it might be fixed?

I've had this laptop for several weeks and each time I unplug the power cable to use it running off the battery, the wifi connection drops. The timing of when it drops is variable, but this happens consistently. I know from my other devices there is no issue with my Wifi service itself - my other devices remain connected at all times. The laptop will show as either no internet connections available at all (again, not true as my other devices confirm there are), or, my own Wifi is showing on the laptop, but as unavailable. This never happens when the laptop power cable is plugged in. I only ever unplug when there's sufficient power - usually from 100% battery. Please can someone advise?

I keep having trouble staying on the wifi at a local coffee shop (Panera). Once I connect, it stays connected for maybe 10 minutes. Then constantly drops off. Disconnect, wait a minute then reconnect, and it might work again for a short time.

Reboot the laptop, and the process starts all over again.

Never have any trouble on any other wifi. Another laptop that I will occasionally bring stays connected for well over an hour. Same with my phone.

Every few minutes, my laptop looses connectivity with my router which requires me to reconnect manually.  Other devices behave normally.Sometime, when I run the trouble-shoot function, this resets the adaptor, which will often resolve the issue for a temporary period of time. Lastly, despite attempting to make adjustments to the power settings, the laptop will go to sleep after just a couple of minutes.  This is even with the settings set to "Never".  Don't know if this is connected to the general issues regarding wifi connection. Appreciate some help.

I have two laptops here at home that I run through a wireless router for my internet. My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite series laptop running Windows Vista and is giving me absolutely no problems whatsoever. My wife's on the other hand is losing connection from the internet about every hour or so. It's not happening at any certain interval but sporadic. When this happens she has to use the Repair my Connection option several times to get the internet back working again. Her laptop is a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista 64 bit.

I wondered to start with if the 64 bit was the problem. I've updated my routers internal software. It's a Netgear wireless router. Anything else I need to add? Help?

I've had an HP Laptop Pavilion g6 for around a year, operating on Windows 8.1 I'm repreatedly (and increasingly) losing wifi connection to router - all other devices using the same wifi connection (desktop pc, nexus phone, samsung phone) all retain connection and internet access but the Pavilion keeps dropping off. Other related posts on this forum have suggested the issue may be an outdated driver - how do I check that?

Hello again Pragmata, It is good to hear from you again! Since the issue continues after you power down the notebook, I also recommend following the steps below to correct this issue: 1. Open DEVICE MANAGER  2. Open up NETWORK ADAPTERS  3. Right click on the WiFi Adapter for the pc and left click on PROPERTIES  4. Click on POWER MANAGEMENT at the top.  5. Remove the check mark beside : ALLOW THE COMPUTER TO TURN OFF THIS DEVICE TO SAVE POWER  6. Click OK  7. Close DEVICE MANAGER and test.     NOTE:  It may also be checked under the FAMILY CONTROLLER (eg. Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller which would be listed under the WiFi Card). If so, you could remove the check mark beside ALLOW THE COMPUTER TO TURN OFF THIS DEVICE TO SAVE POWER. Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!Regards

Recently experiencing issues with wifi, dropping and disconnecting regularly by itself, having to restart laptop or router several times to be able to reconnect. The other laptop in the household (hp pavilion as well but different model) has an intel network adapter and doesnt have any issue, but this laptop has a realtek network adapter and in the past two weeks, it's been horribly frustrating and a struggle to connect. I tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers but it didnt fix the issue. I have tried several 'solutions' seen online (untick boxes, power management...) but without any success. It looks like it may have something to do with the router itself (though it has worked normally for weeks before the trouble start), but considering the second laptop doesnt face any issue,  does anyone know if there's a fix?

I just reinstalled the OS on my laptop, and would like to know which drivers or download I need to access the internet via wifi.  I get my signal from a free wifi public wifi.  When I set up, it asked if I connected to the internet through a cable or another option, I think I incorrectly chose cable, should I reinstall?  Or can I just download the proper drivers and be able to find a signal from there? 
 
I access the internet on another computer and transfer whatever I need via USB.  Thanks for looking.

Can anyone recommend a simple and inexpensive way to boost the WiFi reception signal strength of a Laptop.

When I am away from the office I often use WiFi Hotspots to connect to the Internet. Some Hotspots are very good and provide a good signal, but the strength of other Hotspot signals is often very poor. If you check the signal strength it is often so weak that connection is not possible or frequently drops out.

If possible I would prefer not to change the WiFi card in the Laptop but rather use something like an antenna to boost the received signal.

So I have a super weird issue going on here.

I live in a house where there is a wifi network, umm its through comcast but i know nothing about the router itself, just that i cannot connect to the network, everyone else in the house gets 5 bars from the signal but i get only 1-2 and cannot stay connected.

Now i can connect just fine to my own wireless hotspot on my phone, from the library or starbucks,and everyone else can connect to the home network with no issue, except for me....

does anyone know why this might be?

I just got a new Pavilion laptop  yesterday and so far I like it except for one thing. When I'm working in my home office, I hook the laptop up to two monitors, a keyboard, etc. I found out through the forums that the wifi antennae is in the lid and when the lid is closed my wifi signal degrades so much my computer is basically useless. Is there a way I can boost the signal with the lid closed? Would an extra antennae help? This is a pretty ridiculous antennae design for people who use their laptops in home offices hooked up to monitors.

I have a window's 8 laptop. It is about a year old. A few months ago it just suddenly stopped getting a strong wifi signal in my room. The wireless router is in the other room. I assumed that it was just our router, a belkin, and started using an ethernet cable rather then replace it. However, I am visiting my girlfriend and the router is in her room. I took my laptop to the other room and suddenly I only have one bar of connection and nothing will load, like it does at my house. Even sitting right next to the modem get 3 to 4 bar signal strength. I have no idea what to do. I have ran virus checks and malware checks. Nothing turned up. I tried checking to see if my wireless driver needed to be updated but it says that it's up to date and functioning properly, which clearly it isn't. My wireless driver is qualcomm atheros ar9485 802.11. Please help.

My brother bought this laptop for me as a gift about a month and a half ago and it keeps freezing, no matter what I do. I tried updating several drivers as well as the BIOS but it just keeps freezing. I edit youtube videos, as well as write and author books and it's really frustrating when I am working on a project and I look away for a split second and the **bleep** thing has frozen. It freezes up in a way where I can't even it CRTL ALT DELETE to go into taskmaster, everything is frozen. The mouse, the screen, the keyboard won't work, I have to completely shut it off and therefore lose a lot of work.It even freezes up when I restart it, as soon as my desktop opens it will freeze and I have to restart again. I am this close to throwing the thing across the room.Another thing is the wifi signal keeps dropping, I updated the drivers and I have no idea where to go from here. It will show my router is available but no be connected to it, and when I try to connect it says connection not available. And it's not just my router, it's any other place I go to and try to use the WiFi. I am beyond frustrated.

I use road runner cable internet from time warner. I have a linksys wrt54g wireless router that was purchased many years ago. In our apartment, we have 3 computers. One is a desktop. The other 2 is laptops. One of the laptops we use is in a room very far from my room where the router and desktop computer is located at. The connection for the wireless is pretty bad so you have to go to the living room right next to it to get a better connection.
At first i thought i fixed this problem by upgrading the firmware as i have never did this before ever. I upgraded it to firmware version 4.21.5 for the linksys router. At first it seemed like the signal got better from that room but now its as bad as it was before.
My question is what could be the problem? I put my router on top of my desktop computer so it wouldn't be on the table where so many things could block it. Thus its at the highest point i could put the router in my room.
So i tried something different. Well i then brang my laptop to that room and went on the same site as the other computer and went to load the same streaming videos. My laptop however... the connection was faster than the other laptop in that room which is far away from where the desktop/router is at. Basically you can't even stream a video in that room most of the time but my laptop could.
Does that mean that my router isn't the problem since the wireless signal works fine for my laptop there whereas the inspiron 15r goes much slower... Read more

A:Wifi Signal Not Strong Enough- Router or Laptop Problem?

Someone suggested to take the router out of my room and bring it to the living room so it would be closer to that laptop. I was going to do this but i cannot b/c there is a wire that connects from my cable modem to this other thing. I'm not sure what its called but basically it is connected to these wires on the top in my hallway. Does anyone know what that is called?

Does that mean plugging this into that computer possibly could make the connection stronger in that room? I'm thinking that the reason has to be because that laptops wireless card isn't strong like mine which is why? But would buying this solve the problem?

Someone said buy another router because my router is very old and to get an N router. Should i do this instead? The thing is i'm thinking its not the router fault as my wireless is fine with my laptop in that room. thoughts on this? And if i should do this, can someone recommend me a wireless router that has good range? There are soo many routers on amazon.com with good/bad reviews and it seems like the good reviews they have, there are tons of bad ones as well.
Someone said my other option would be to buy some wireless extender. I checked amazon but aren't these basically wireless router with an extender?

I have read through a lot of threads on here and tried different fixes and so far nothing has worked.

I have disabled the ISATAP Adapter #4 as I thought that was an issue....still not working
I have deleted all of my networks and tried to reconnect....still not working.
I have tried the ipconfig/all command .... still not working.
I have checked and all drivers are up to date.
I have reset my router to make sure it wasn't an issue with that.

It either will connect with "local access only" or it will connect for maybe 15 seconds and then the connection is gone, or says it cannot connect because it is not getting an answer from my router.

When I search for a network, it shows my network with full signal strength.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a Dell Wireless 1395 WLAN mini-card
Running Vista 32bit.
What has changed...

I recently updated my desktop to Windows 7 (not sure if this could effect the Wifi)
Recently switched to Qwest fiber optic internet (but a tech came out and set it up, and everything was working fine until today)

I'm lost now, I am not sure what to do, and my wife needs this computer to be able to connect to Wifi so she can work from home.

it continues to drop out and today it seemed to drop out everytime i load a webpagei went on to download my wifi driver it when i opened it it said it was installing a bluetooth driver! i downloaded - Wireless LANBroadcomWireless LAN Driver7.35.303.0149.5 MB2015/12/04extracted it and i clicked on setup, which has a bluetooth logo i opened it and nothing happens just comes out with a cmd that says something but i cant read it in time.

Hello,My laptop is hp15 r006tu notebook and it is DOS laptop. Recently upgraded from windows8 to windows10. Then I have a problem with wifi connecting. So again I reinstalled windows8 two times because my laptop wifi signal receiving capacity reduces. I dont know why it happens.. Then I installed sp71571 but i didnt get any result. So I installed Broadcom 802.11b g n WLAN Driver - sp69929.. These two drivers are taken from hp support website for my laptop. Still I didnt get the result. Finally I installed only  sp71571 and I am using windows8 default driver 802.11 wireless Lancard.   I connect to wifi easily but receiving capacity reduces.And I think that my laptop has problem with wifi drivers. Please help me in this....

I'm going to try and explain this as best as possible. I have a wireless camera system that is connected to a wifi router, the purpose of this is to give the wireless camera a connection point to the dvr. There is no internet signal to this router. I want to be able to view my cameras over an internet connection, so I can use my mobile device to view them wherever I want.

An ethernet cable needs to be plugged directly into the dvr in order to allow it to connect to the internet, problem is I am using a wifi signal from a business next to mine and have no way of doing so. Is there a way for me to connect my wifi connected laptop to the router via an ethernet cable into the WAN port, and use one of the LAN ports to connect to the dvr while being able to send the signal to the dvr allowing it to connect to the internet?

Please let me know if I need to give more information on what I'm trying to accomplish. Your answers are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I had installed UBUNTU 16.04 LTS - 64 bit in my new HP Laptop - 15-AC-649TU. On first day there was no problem, but after some update next day when I started my system wifi signals shows very wear even some time it drops. Even not working in next room where my wifi router is kept, only working in the room where the router is kept. Kindly suggest how to resolve this issue. I had also automatically updated my OS, even though the problem persist.

My M17 is constantly dropping out since upgrading to windows 10,i have since rolled back to 7 and it works fine. However i prefer 10 so i keep going back,it starts off every now and then and gradually gets worse untill as of now it wont work at all.
Its fine when i plug an ethernet cable in.
Is there anything i can do as i dont really want to go back to 7 as i used to have BSOS problems which i have never had with 10

Not sure what model you have but older windows 7 laptops might not have windows 10 drivers available and are stuck using the generic drivers. It would be better to rollback to 7 until you can upgrade to a new computer. Check Dell drivers and downloads to see your model is supported with win 10 drivers. If not, rollback to 7.

I just refreshed my Windows 8 computer to try fixing a serious slowing-down of my system, and am now finding my wifi connection frequently dropping or becoming "limited."  I am getting very frustrated here. Can anyone help??

Update:  I think the problem is fixed.  Time will tell.  Although Windows was telling me that my wireless adapter driver was up to date and functioning properly (hahaha), I found a newer driver and installed that.  So far so good. Fingers crossed.

I have a Hewlett Packard Pavillion 500-424 desktop with Windows 10.
I bought an Epson Work Force WF=3620 wireless, multifunction printer.
I do not have a network with a router. The computer is connected to the
internet by cable and is not part of any network. The fire wall is off.

Epson support help me setup the printer's direct wifi signal. However, for some
reason it is not listed in the available wifi networks. When I click on the little
picture of a monitor in the lower right hand corner of my screen,
the window that opens

does not show my printer's wifi. Other networks in my area
sometimes show, sometimes not. In this screenshot, JESSIE-PC
NETWORK is showing. Sometimes 2-3 networks show, sometimes
nothing shows. It's just blank.

If I click on Network settings, it opens this:
As you can see, Jessies network is listed in Wifi2. If I click on manage wifi settings, I get:

DIRECT-264EEE51 is my printer's wifi.

I've been on 9 phone calls with tech support this week, 5 with Epson, 3 with
Microsoft, & 1 with HP. They keep passing me around. The guy I talked to on

computer and we successfully printed a test page.

Not being familiar with Epson devices nor with using the direct Wi-Fi of multi-function printers I have to ask: is the direct wireless signal broadcast continuously or does the Epson go idle after a time and turn off the wireless? If the latter, are you sure the signal is being broadcast all the times you try to detect it on your PC?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows Vista or latter I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

After about 3 failed attempts to upgrade to windows 10 from 8.1 i inadvertently clicked on that annoying prompt to try again, and it completed the upgrade this time.
Everything is fine with it, except the Wifi and ethernet keeps dropping. If i do the troubleshoot repair or disable/enable my ethernet adapter then it works again for a few minutes before dropping again.
I have installed every upgrade recommended by the Dell website but it still persists. I have the Inspiron 7537
Can anyone recommended any steps to fix it?
