Windows not recognizing NVidia GeForce 8400M GT

Q: Windows not recognizing NVidia GeForce 8400M GT

I just installed Windows 7 onto my Vaio Laptop AR630E. Windows 7 is not recognizing my video card (NVidia 8400M GT) at all. I can't find it in the device manager nor can I download new drivers for it. The Sony website has no new drivers for my notebook's model.

I tried to download from NVidia's website but it could not locate my video card either.

Preferred Solution: Windows not recognizing NVidia GeForce 8400M GT

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all.

I recently had problems with the factory installed Vista 32bit on my Sony Vaio VGN-AR51E.

I decided to install Windows 7 64bit and since then my laptop has not found my graphics card Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT.

On device manager, display adapters are shown only as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter but on Vista my graphics card was also shown.

I have tried downloading all relevant drivers etc but the Nvidia installer says no graphics hardware can be found.

I am half decent with computers but have no idea when it comes to editing the .nfi (or whatever its called) files that I have seen other posters suggest.

Can someone please confirm if my card is even compatible with my OS and what is the best route to take.

Also, I only found out that my graphics card was not in use whilst trying to play Rome Total War, and the game would not start as it said DirectX 9 is not installed (I am currently using DirectX 11). I have tried all the downloads for DirectX 9 with no avail so im focusing on the graphics card issue.

Other games, such as SimCity 4, work fine with the standard vga graphics adapter though.

For any more info required, just ask.

Much appreciated

A:Nvidia GeForce 8400M GT not found after Windows 7 64bit install

The 8400M GT is currently being driven by the generic Microsoft driver.

Is this the driver you tried? http://us.download.nvidia.com/Window...ional-whql.exe

Here's the full text of the address to the driver minus the "http://" so that it's not automatically 'linked' and automatically truncated: us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/314.22/314.22-notebook-win8-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe

Greetings to everyone out there, I am new to the forum. Feel free to critique me if I do or say something wrong.

I purchases a Dell 1300 XPS around November, also u should know I keep very good care of my Laptop.

Recently (being the last month) my computer has been freezing (at least the screen) it flickers green and red, then it pixellates, then my computer crashes.

However about two weeks ago my computer flickered and pixellated, but didn't crash. My computer reinitialized my graphics card and started working. It then told me my graphics card had failed. This was great for me because up until then I really had no idea what was going wrong.

So I now know what my problem is.

Then I decided to go onto cyberspace and look around to see if anyone else had the same problem. I found, Yes! Few people did. However no one has been able to solve the problem.

I've updated my driver, rolled back my driver and have come across nothing but failure. The only thing that I've found to work is just disabling my graphics card, which is pretty lame because my computer goes into fits whenever I try to play a movie or a game.

Please if anyone has any information that would help me it would be much appreciated.

I have a HP Pavilion dv9934ca notebook with windows 7 and a Nvidia Geforce 8400m GS. Tonight the screen changed into a bunch of lines of different colors. I restarted and right before the login page it would go back to the screen with the colors. I went into safe mode and everything worked so i uninstalled my display adapter in the device manager and rebooted and windows worked but looks like crap. Windows then automatically downloaded and installed the update for the 8400m GS. So i rebooted and it went back to that colored screen. So I went back into safe mode and uninstalled the adapter again and downloaded the driver from Nvidias website and when I rebooted again i got the same screen. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I'm starting to think the 8400m is toast.

Hi guys,

I noticed an old thread around and found it because i experienced the same issue with my nvidia card an i have tried it with a couple models different from 8400M GT and this solution worked just fine.

At a point my graphics card went berserk and from that moment on i had some vertical blue lines over the entire display.

At first I thought it was a OS related issue but after i kept reading and browsing around i noticed that most people recommended to contact Vaio support and they should work out the issue for free in about 3-5 days.

Another solution would have been to bake the entire motherboard which to be honest, i didn't really have the guts to do it

I just wanted to let you all know that this solution really worked and my Vaio has been dunning just fine for the past 4 months without any issues as well as a couple of 2 other machines i applyed this solution to.

1. Buy thermal paste
2. Take your machine apart ( only the case until you can actually reach the video card)
3. Take a hair dryer and hold it at 3cm above your card and turn it on
4. Keep it running for about 2:30 - 3 minutes
5. Make yourself a tee or a cofee and let everything cool off (this is very important because when you apply the thermal paste it is cooler and you could crack something)
6. Apply thermal paste over the video card chip
7. Reasamble your machine

After this everything should run perfectly

Below is the video i used as a reference to do this and I can vouch that everything is up a... Read more

I intend to upgrade my Sony Vaio VGN-NR21S/S laptop to Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit I am currently using Windows Vista Home Edition 32-bit.

My graphics card is not compatiable and I have found few threads on this forum which addresses the issue.

Is it better to do the inplace upgrade and then update the graphics card later?

Thanks in advance,

A:Nvidia Geforce 8400M Gt Driver query

You usually can't upgrade the graphics processor on a laptop. What claimed it wasn't compatible? There are Windows 7 drivers available on NVIDIA's website.

Also, it is recommended to do a clean install if possible. The inplace upgrade can take a while and a lot of people have problems resulting from it.

I hav sony vaio vgn-fz11z laptop with Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit and NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT graphics card. It went black while playing a game. I restarted but it showed black screen with dotted vertical lines and freezed. I restore it in safe mood. It did not show GeForce 8400M GT graphic card but just Standard VGA Graphics Adopter instead. I tried to reinstall drivers (sony vaio orignal) but on restart,it again freezed.

Then i reinstalled fresh vista 32bit. But its just showing standard VGA adopter card. when I Tried to update it with the driver for NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT graphics card. it refuses saying that driver is up to date. Then i just run the setup file for the driver, it got installed and also shed in device manager as GeForce 8400M GT, but on restart it again hung with black screen with vertical dotted lines. Now i rolled it back to standard adopter VGA card and system boots. System also show vertical white bands as in figure while running or adopter card as shown below.

I successfully installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit by choosing custom install on my Sony Vaio VGN-NR21S. I didnt delete my Windows Vista Home Edition 32-bit recovery partition.

I am having difficulty in updating the graphics card which is a Nvidia Geforce 8400M GT. I downloaded a desktop 8400 driver from Nvidia site(UK) for me.

I then used the mobility modder tool for Nvidia and it modified the inf file. I then ran the Setup.exe from the Nvidia directory.

The problem is that i keep getting a message saying "The System has not been modified" after running the setup.exe

I then tried the notebook 8400M GT driver from Nvidia site(even though its not supported by Sony) That didnt work.

So i then tried using the Mobility modder on the notebook 8400M driver but the same problem occurs.

I am not confident in modifying the inf file outlined in the following:

if possible could somebody create me an inf file please?

This wasn't what you asked, but -

Can you install the Vista graphics driver?

I had to do something like that with my Compaq notebook (8200M graphics). Since doing that, I was able to get drivers from Windows Update or use the generic nVidia mobile drivers. I can't tell you whether it was necessary, but it may have helped.

The game loads fine until i begin playing, and the graphics are completely messed up. Picture attached below in thumbnails

I can still move around in the game but cannot play it as you can see.
What happened first was I had an issue with direct x 9.0. I would play the game and it would crash within couple hours of playing and it would give me this error "Directx Has Encountered an Unrecoverable Error" which i already know I have the most recent update for that. Checked my DirectX files; No problems found there and i have the most recent DirectX update. Checked my Graphics Card to see if it needed to be updated. Looked as though it did so I updated it to the most recent update for the Geforce 8400M GS: Verde Driver v266.58. After that I had no more crashes and no more Directx errors but, I started having the graphical issue problems in the picture. I have also made sure I have my settings set to the lowest settings in gameplay because my video card is not that impressive. It's beyond me at this point what to do, I have uninstalled all my graphic drivers and re-installed them again to still come to this problem. I bought the Modern Warfare 2 game from steam, and I know all my specs meet minimum required specs besides my CPU speed, but i still don't see why I shouldn't be able to play the game. I will post more information on here including the DxDiag Report.

No matter which driver I install, even using Mobility Modder, the result is the same ....black screen after windows logo upon restart, so all I can use is standard vga adapter.

Tried also downloading the driver and then manually installing via device manager and noticed i have 3 instances of my card, could this be the problem? If so how would I correct it.

I've recently been having trouble installing official and forceware drivers for my Geforce 8400m GS on my Dell 1420 since I upgrade to Windows 7 32-bit from Vista. When I uninstall my current drivers and reboot Windows fails to boot in normal or safe mode. Generally when I install drivers I reboot into safe mode, run driver sweeper and properly install them. Windows kept freezing at the classpnp.sys file so I changed the file to classpnp.old after some research but it started to BSOD me at the disk.sys file.

So I tried to just outright install the drivers from device manager by upgrading and I would get a message saying Windows couldn't find drivers compatible with any of my hardware. I've done a lot of homework, downloaded countless drivers, disabled aero, used mobility modder, and done just about all I feel I can do to fix this. These drivers worked fine with Vista and I really don't want to downgrade because I lost my product key and disc so that would be a pain. If anyone has had this issue and knows of a driver of modified inf file that would fix this problem I would greatly appreciate it. This has been frustrating to say the least

It's also been suggested you download the Vista driver from your manufacturers website. As I said you may have been there, done that, but we will not know for sure until we ask. A Guy

I just installed windows 7 professional last night and when trying to personalize my theme, i realized that i couldn't change window color. It only gave me the contrast themes unlike in vista where i could choose the color and it would still look like vista. I'm not sure if that last sentence made much sense, but i hope you get the idea. I can still use the desktop backgrounds and sounds, but not the aero window colors.

When I go to device manager, the only graphics adaptor it shows is the standard VGA. When I had Vista I didn't have any problem. But now that I have Windows 7, the OS won't detect the graphics card. Is it not compatible with Windows 7? I saw another post with a fix for the 8400M GT, and was wondering if maybe there was hope for me.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Google/goto NVIDIA drivers downloads on Nvidia website, select your graphics card and 32/64 bit. It should give you the latest driver to download. (195.62)

***For the short version, check the tl;dr at the bottom***

Let me preface this by saying that I don't understand too much about video cards. I game every once and a while, mostly older games which have easy specs, but for the most part, I rely on my computer for other things and trust my friends to steer me right when upgrading.

I own a sony viao that's a couple years old. Recently I bumped my OS up from vista to 7. The upgrade went as smoothly as one could expect, save for stuff related to my video card. Booting up Steam and attempting to play a game resulted in my being informed that I needed a directX 9.0c compatible card. This didn't seem right, and upon further digging, I found that at the very least, my 8400M GT should be DirectX 10.0 compatible. I downloaded the appropriate drivers from Nvidia's site but they said there was no detectable upgrade for me and immediately quit. Trying a download from microsoft's DirectX site went through an entire installation and optimization process that ultimately changed absolutely nothing.

At this point, I tried to boot up solitare, and windows informed me that hardware acceleration is not turned on and/or not supported by my video card. Checking the settings, I can see that hardware acceleration is clearly maxed. At this point, I figure the problem is very fundamental and I'm at a loss as to where to even start. Checking System Information, there is nothing that clearly stands out to me as i... Read more

A:Windows 7 (64 bit) upgrade with Nvidia 8400M GT

This is a laptop. You should get all drivers from Sony support for that model, not Nvidia. Does the Vaio's CPU support a 64-bit Operating System?

Hello! I am new to the forums.

I recently upgraded my Sony Vaio laptop to Windows 7 Ultimate x64 but I am having trouble installing the video card driver for my 8400M GT card. The installer tells me that the installer cannot find any drivers compaible with my current hardware. I really need to install my video card for this computer. Thanks alot guys!

Welcome to the Forum Pega57.

I've gotten that message when I am trying to install an nVidia divers package from download onto a computer on which I have uninstalled the current drivers and cleaned up thoroughly in Safe mode.

If you try and install the nVidia drivers before you have rebooted and allowed Windows to Install it's generic WDDM1.1 driver you get that message.

The proper procedure is to
1)remove the old drivers and video card software,
2) restart the computer - at the desktop you will be asked to install the generic Windows driver (or it will install automatically - depending on your settings),
3) after it installs you will be asked to restart again - do so,
4) once back on the desktop you can now install the nVidia package.

Let us know if there is something different about your issue.

Hello all,

A few days ago, my girlfriend was using my laptop and it shutdown on her randomly. When she tried to boot it back up, it asked her if she wanted to repair or try to start windows normally. She attempted the repair option, but this essentially told her that it could not fix the problem by itself.

When I got a chance to look at it, I noticed the same thing. I also tried going back to restore points, going into safe mode and uninstalling and then reinstalling all drivers, and even attempted enable services and programs individually and then attempt to start up. All of them resulted in the same problem when trying to start normally: We get to the Windows 7 logo, it blinks and then freezes, and then will restart itself.

Eventually I found a forum online that suggested uninstalling the video drivers and starting windows normally, and this actually allowed me to get in to the system without using safe mode. After I got in, I installed the latest drivers from Nvidia for my operating system and GPU. Another crash, so back to safe mode, remove drivers, and get back in to normal starting conditions.

I even tried a suggested method I found on here saying that I should install the drivers using a modified INF file. The explanation was that all of the drivers were made for desktop computers and would often not work. I was pretty confident that the drivers from HP should work on my laptop, and if not, the drivers from Nvidia were specifically for a mobile card, so should ... Read more

Hello All,

I've searched the forum for threads relating to this and have had a modicum of success, but am still not all the way to solving this prolem.

My System:

A:Windows 7 32bit seeing Nvidia 8400M GT as Standard VGA, Sony Vaio

Hi Roger and welcome to W7 Forums

Where are you getting the driver from? Normally, I would say to go to the hardware manufacturer (in this case NVidia), but with Sony Vaios (and some other manufacturers as well) you need to go to the laptop manufacturer instead. This is because they customise the drivers so much that only the drivers that they supply will install.

What driver version have you got installed? Here are the latest WHQL versions from NVidia for the 8M series:

I just installed Windows 7 today. When I booted up the computer, to my surprise aero peek did not load because it says that my video card does not support it. When I went to check what video card was being detected, the 8400m was not showing up. I downloaded the drivers for windows 7 off of the nvidia website and still no go. I am using a Dell XPS with 4 gigs of memory and a 2ghz Dualcore processor.

What version of windows are you running? Their are alot of threads about the 8400M. I'm kind of tired so if you'll use the search function at the top of the page and just enter drivers 8400m or nvidia 8400m you should get several threads that have delt with this issue. Sorry I can't walk you through it but it's 1:36 Am right now and I'm tired. I'm sure that this has come up many times. I recently purchased a new laptop and the card coming with it was the Geforce 8400-GS, not high-end but, on other forums said to be mid-range. It's supposed to play new games smoothly; just not at peak performance. The forum below categorized it as thus: The Mobile Graphics Card Info Page - Most GPU Qs answered - Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion

My computer specs:
Intel core duo CPU T5750 @2.0 GHz 2.0 Ghz
RAM: 2.0 GHz
32-bit operating system

Yet my Dell performance page rates me at a base score 2.6 in desktop graphics out of 5.9. Gaming graphics are apparently at a decent 4.1 out of 5.9 yet games and definitely PC game cutscenes do not run smoothly.
This computer even plays its default chess game at a noticibly choppy rate when it only demands a recommended 2.0 base score. I tried to run the 2003 game Jedi Academy and it runs though on it and other games the cutscenes are very choppy and gameplay has a very noticable FPS jumpiness. The newest game I played was a 2006 strategy game (Empire at War, I'm using the SW games for testing because they tend not to be very demanding) and it also played choppy.
These games don't demand very much and Jedi Academy is honestly pretty ancient. There are no viruses or bugs on the computer nor is it bogged down with programs. Lastly running videos is often difficult on or off the internet. Many times the frame rate on these is reduced. The graphics card is adjusted to the medi... Read more

I have had a couple of taskbar messages now to tell me the GPU has crashed and fixed itself, previously i had thought it was because i was running 3D games in a window, the problem shows itself as random colour blocks on the desktop and then the whole display flashing, like the computer is about to go into a UAC prompt, culminating with the message on the taskbar regarding the GPU. but now it is happening just with DreamScene running, so im all excited 'cause woo hoo, fiinally Vista is doing something other than just working right anytime all the time. I am using Vista Ultimate with SP1 32bit on my dv6519tx laptop, the laptop had Vista home premium originally, and I have the latest Nvidia driver from HP which is driver I have downloaded the latest Nvidia driver from their website, but as this isnt specifically a mobile 'M' driver, i havent yet installed it. I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 that was misbehaving; on start-up, the monitor appeared "dazzled". Disabling the GeForce 8400M GS allows it to start and function with what I assume is the less-capable but at least functional built-in video. I believe that the GeForce chipset has failed and I'm thinking of replacing the motherboard, which I understand is the only way to cope with the failed GeForce video "card".

How can I verify my diagnosis? I ran the Dell diagnostics from their site, but with this device disabled I don't think it gets tested. I'd like to know for sure that this is the only way to proceed before I buy a new mobo.

I ran System Recovery and Start-up Repair multiple times from the hard drive and from the Win 7 DVD. I've installed the newest GeForce drivers and rolled the driver back to a version from September, 2013, with the same result. These steps have persuaded me the problem is in the HW, but I'd appreciate some reassurance. Maybe I'm putting too much into the reports about the GeForce chip problems and lawsuit for 1420 owners (too late for me).

If I do replace the mobo, I'm inclined to buy one that uses the Intel video chipset instead of the GeForce...to preclude the same problem. Or am I just trading a known GeForce problem for Intel problems that may be worse?

I've been looking for the last while for a laptop and graphics is one of my main concerns. Before I start, I want to make it clear that I'm not looking for really high graphics quality because I'm limited by budget, and on laptop you can't upgrade above the two mentioned cards.

So basically I had been thinking about getting a Dell Vostro 1510 with Geforce 8400m GS, but just recently saw the Dell studio 15 with ATI Radeon HD 3450. It would cost me about 65 more to get studio atm, but will also get extra 90Gb Hard disk space, and a 2.1 GHz core2duo over the vostros 1.83 GHz.

In terms of performance, I basically want to know, is the Radeon better than the 8400? Im not looking to play the newest games like crysis etc but do want to play some like call of duty 4, which i know works on the 8400.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks
