Create New folder, move file, delete file. Explorer Freeze

Q: Create New folder, move file, delete file. Explorer Freeze

Basically the title. Almost every single time i move ANY file or delete any file, the window im in freezes and the progress bar freezes. Now when i create a new folder the window im in freezes also, but i'd say its only 50% of the time. The temporary solution i found was to go to the task bar, end explorer, and restart it using run. Now when i check back on that folder, whatever action I did (ie delete file) does do what i wanted, its just the freezing. I'm looking for a permanent solution to this and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Create New folder, move file, delete file. Explorer Freeze

Hi erod49, try looking in your error logs. You have given a good discription of the problem. Tel us your system specs as well.

To get into your error logs,

Left Click on Start Menu.
Right click on Computer and choose manage.
Click on the event viewer.
You now have loads of options to try and pin down what is happening.
Expand the error tab.
Look for things in the last 24 hours.

Other things to look for are updates, has an update caused this. Has your computer autoupdated any of the motherboard drivers.
Have you tried to restore the computer before the error started or has it always been like that.

hi so work in an recruitment office and im trying to create a batch file that the computers can run on a schedule to create a folder with that days date on it and move all files from the desktop to that folder( also created on the desktop), i want the code to only move files and leave folders and shortcuts unaffected

this is what i've got so far.

Quote:
cd desktop

for /f "tokens=1-3 delims=/" %%a in ("%date%") do md "%%a_%%b_%%c"
mkdir c:\users\training\desktop\%date:/=%

MOVE c:\users\training1\desktop\*.* c:\users\training1\desktop\%date:/=%

right now it is making the folder but not moving anything i know it has something to do with the \%date:/=%

il need this batch file to run from a hidden location so that 1. the students dont mess with it and 2. so the batch doesn't move itself from the desktop. also the computers all have different user names so if i could get something that will make "training1" what ever the current logged in user is so i don't have to rewrite the batch for each of the 60 or so computers we have.

A:batch&task to create new folder and move all desktop file to it

Especially with files and folders I find AHK easier to figure out than batch. You can download the free AutoHotkey scripting language here:
AutoHotkey

Here is a script to get you started. I commented out the actual deletions. You can run it and see the desktop files that would be moved in a msgbox. Each loop it asks if you want to quit to escape the tedium. Once you are sure it will work as expected comment out the lines with msgbox and uncomment the FileMove line

If anything gets moved into the folder that shouldn't be you can just drag it back during testing. The variable A_Desktop is the user's desktop directory so the script should work without editing as far as that goes.

Note: free to use at your own risk.

Code:
FormatTime,FolderName,,yyyy_MM_dd
FolderName := A_Desktop "\" FolderName
FileCreateDir,%FolderName%
Loop %A_Desktop%\*.*
{
If (A_LoopFileName = "desktop.ini")
continue
If (SubStr(A_LoopFileName,-3) = ".lnk")
continue
; FileMove,%A_LoopFileLongPath%,%FolderName%
MsgBox % A_LoopFileName
MsgBox, 4388, Quit Loop, Quit Loop?
IfMsgBox,Yes
ExitApp
}

A:How to move folder in Windows 8 File Explorer

Its really hard to understand what it is you want the way you are typing and skipping words that would make up a legible sentence. I literally read your questions (?) as many different ways as possible. All I can conclude is that you would like to hide certain folders when your external (or network) drive is plugged into your system?

Can you right click on specific folders and tick them as hidden? Then make sure in "folder options" you have selected "Don't show hidden folders & drives"

Is this what you are asking buddy?

Since 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I also made a custom High Contrast Theme that i use at night or when eyes are a bit tired. It's 2 months old so it's there long before the problem.I've not installed any new programs in the last week apart from some updates from FileZilla, Foxit pdf and Notepad++.Last system update is COPICOM from 13 July.I followed this guide which as not resolved the problem: I cannot find a way to create a new folder in Windows 8. - Microsoft Community Any pointer would be kindly appreciated. File Explorer usually (not always but most of the time) became not responding for 30-60 seconds when creating new folder or renaming a folder within a library. During it hang, opening another File Explorer and browse to the same folder will see the folder is not created or renamed yet. After 30-60 seconds, the folder is created or renamed without any error.

The issue only happen within a library. If i create or rename folder within the same folder under direct path (e.g. D:\Music\) then there is no hang issue. However, if i access the same folder under library (i.e. Library > Music) then it usually hang.

Tried with other existing Library or create new Library and all had same issue as long as it is within library. Also tried with different hard drive and it was not hard drive specific issue.

Any idea?

I've been searching the last 2 hours on a solution to my problem & have yet to find an answer so I thought I would post it here.

Description of Problem:

I have a folder dedicated for songs (guitar tabs & chords) that are .htm extensions, however I would like to move these songs to the/an appropriate Artist folder.

For Example: (current DIR layout)
Folder \ songtitlewithnospaces.htm

Ideal DIR layout
Artist Folder \ songtitlewithnospaces.htm

I have a listing or can create a listing (.txt file) of the songs by the artist, I need a way to search this .txt file for the song name (with no spaces i.e. songwithnospaces.htm) and move the file to the corresponding artist folder.

I would like to create a .bat file for this as I have 1000+ songs and to search/find & move each song file to the correct artist folder would take more time than I have.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I try to create new folder at the area of the 6 folders, like I was able in Windows 7, but when I right-click with mouse in that area of the 6 folders, I just don't get the option to create a new folder.

Is there a way to open File Explorer like the old fashion way of Windows 7 and just create folders there?

By default, you cannot create new folders in "This PC" since it's not an actual folder. You would need to open a folder first, then you will be able to create a new folder as usual.

I seriously logged onto my computer one morning after leaving it running all night long for a torrent to download ... and a porn file had downloaded itself into My Music folder.

This file has nothing to do with the torrent I was downloading and I do not know how it got through my updated Norton. (Please don't go on about how you personally may not like Norton or think it sucks or something).

This file has a pornographic name that is many many characters long. In fact, I cannot even view the entire name. The name is so long that I cannot move the file anywhere. However, it will not let me rename it. By clicking the mouse two times slowly, just gives me an error chime sound and nothing happens.

A:File won't delete, move, etc ...

Hi there...

try downloading and installing a little freeware program called Unlocker which can be found here. Once installed, right click on the file and select Unlocker, then if the file is locked by another process, you should be able to select Delete from the drop down box and then click Unlock All, this should force delete the file but you may get a message saying it requires a reboot to complete.

If that doesn't work, try moving all the files from your Music folder to another location temporarily and the delete the Music folder with the offending file inside.

Once complete, run your anti-virus and anti-spyware software to remove any relating files/folders that may be elsewhere or hidden in your registry.

Hope that helps :-)

I have a Dell 2350 PC with Windows XP. SP 2 is installed.
Recently I added a Maxtor One TouchII external harddrive with Dantz Retrospect Express HD backup software. When I attempted to do a backup of my C: disk, it started the process then stopped and gave me a message that the backup was unsuccessful due to file with a "malformed name". With some difficulty, I tracked the file down to file which resided in a folder on the C: disk. I understand that this type of file is created by <chkdsk>. This file is empty and was apparently created the first time I booted up the computer (Apr.2003). When I attempt to delete or move this file, I get this message:
"File0000.chk is inaccessible.
The directory name is invalid."
I tried deleting from the Command Window and got essentially the same result. I tried to use the SPYBOT shred tool to erase the folder. It appeared to work, but when I checked C: disk, the folder was still there only now the file in it was named . It is this file that now comes up as the offender when I attempt the backup.
How can I get rid of this file.

I can't delete, move or rename the sucker! It says something close to "Access denied, file name too long or invalid" when I try *anything* in windows. I rebooted in dos and tried to del....access denied!
Turns out the "con." is the culprit. It's a reserved device name.
CON is short for console....good old dos.

I found this (actually a friend did) command suggested ---

del \\.\c:\dir\con.c

However for me
dir would be windows\desktop
and con.c would be my file's name

Any thoughts or comments greatly appreciated

I assume you've tried going into dos, changing to the desktop directory and then deleting the file using wildcards? Something like

Just to be safe, run chkdsk /f to make sure the file system isn't corrupted. Click start, (all) programs, accessories, command prompt. Then type
chkdsk x: /f
where x is the letter of the drive the folder sits on. If it's a system drive or in use, it may say you need to reboot. In that case, reboot, and wait a little. You'll find a report in the event log (control panel, classic view, administrative tools, event viewer - don't remember if it's in application log, or system log in Windows Vista - the event may be named chkdsk, winlogon, or something like that. Double-click them and see them one by one and see if it says anything about chkdsk). I suspect it'll say some files are orphaned or something like that. If it finds lost files, it'll save them to a folder named found.000 in your root directory.

Hi there,

I have a very unusual problem with my vista ultimate 64 bit,
when ever I execute an exe file, I can't delete it afterwards.
I can delete it after restart.
There is no security problem, if I do not execute the file then I can delete, move and do what I want. The moment it is run, and certainly close it, I can't delete it any longer. I checked that the process is not running any more.
I tried to see if something is locking the file, no handle was found on the file. It happens for different programs, no matter what as long as it is an .exe file.
I tried unlocker program that said the file is not locked.
It happens even on a usb key with FAT.
The moment I run the exe from the key I can't delete it, and I can't remove the key the right way.
When I pull out the key, and return it, I can delete the file, it is free.
But I can't do that to my hard drive.
Tried scanning for virus, and malware - nothing was found.
Tried security related, but since it happen on a usb FAT disk, and there is no security for that, I am starting to give up.
At this time formatting the computer in not an option.
I will appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance.

A:can't delete / move .exe file after it is run in vista 64bit

Vista does have it's quirks, that's for sure, have you tried deleting from an elevated command prompt?
or you could try this, (sometimes it works)
Run notepad.exe
Go "File" "Open"
select the file and hit delete

Compaq Presario 5000, Model 5BW220, Made 7/19/00, Windows XP Pro, 15 Gig master drive, 37 Gig slave drive, 512 MB RAM, 631 MHz Intel Celeron processor, Compaq 06C0 motherboard.

When I try to delete some programs such as Microsoft Office sometimes I get a message saying: "Renaming, deleting or moving....could make some programs not work. Are you sure you want to do this?" How serious is this warning? Should I just go ahead and delete the program anyway? For example, I copied and pasted Office onto my slave drive because it has more space, and I got that warning. Should I just go ahead and delete Office from my master drive? Also, MS Office installer boxes keep popping up. Why? I wanted to move MS Office to my slave drive because I have little free space on the master drive, but is moving Office too risky or complicate to bother trying to move it? Also, I've been getting Trojan Horse warnings from files from the temp folder, so I tried to delete the temp folder contents but got a message saying: Error deleting file or folder: Cannot delete 3112. Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use". If I should try to delete temp in safe mode how would I do that? Thanks for any replies.

A:How Move Ms Office And Delete Temp File?

As far as I know, you shouldn't have a problem moving MsOffice to the other drive...The bigger issue here is that you have malware installed on your machine. I suggest that you run anti-virus scans, adware scans etc and see if you can remove the Trojan(s) from your machine. That may make pop-ups and the like go away.Deleting contents of Temp folder will not do anything to resolve this even if it would let you do so. If you can't get rid of the malware yourself, I suggest that you open up a new topic in "Am I infected, What do I do now?" and go from there. TROJAN ISSUE FIRST!!!

Hello can anyone help me?

I have a bitmap file that is cluttering up my desktop, but when I try to move it, it just stays where it is and won't move into a different folder. No error message appears.

I also tried deleting it but that wouldn't work, nothing happens, no error message, nothing.

When I right-click on it the only options that appear are

"open"
"edit"
"preview"
"print"
"open with"
"send to"

But when I click on them nothing happens.

Can someone help me please, this file is really starting to annoy me.

Try getting this done in Safe Mode. If that does not work try this:

I hate windoze

I am here at work trying to do some maintenance before I start on a month long binge to update all the websites and server software. Windoze has fought me the entire way, from the defrag to the moving of folders. I hate windoze.

Now I can't even move some psd files I created in Gimp a while ago. Windows just keeps saying that they are being used by another program. There is no program using them. I have been running SpyBot S&D and F-Prot all day so I really doubt it's security related and I have closed down all the programs running before trying to move them. Still says some phantom program is using them. Even tried a restart with no results. Did I mention that I really hate windoze?

I am now completely confused as to why this is happening other then I am using a buggy OS. Do you guys know a work around for this?

Hello!

I am hoping someone here can help me. I was trying to stream a video and one of the many links i clicked on (most of which just play the video and that's it) automatically downloaded an .exe file.

When I go to the downloads folder, it will not let me delete it. I can not move it to any other folder. I have tried going into control panel and deleting it, but it does not show up there. I have tried deleting it through the properties (as i saw somewhere online) but that doesn't work either.

Nothing happens when I right click, and then click delete. I have seen many people having the issue of not being able to uninstall this same program, but they all say that it tells them it's currently being used, and there are specific steps to go through in that situation, but mine doesn't even say it's being used. It just does nothing.

I have not tried to open or run the file at all, because obviously i don't know what it is or want to run it. I just want to delete it completely.

Can anyone help?

This is the what the file name is: FLVPlayer_downloader-N0o2IATmt.exe

Thank you
I'm running windows 8, if that helps at all. I use Chrome as a browser. not sure if any of that info is needed...

Trying to delete a file. As soon as I click on it it freezes Explorer.
I've tried doing the same, delete, OR rename, via multiple other applications and in them I can click on them, and attempt a rename, but the application then freezes. If I try to delete, the deletion scan comes up, and runs till I force close (task manager) the app.
It's an exe file, the exact file name can be seen in the attached screen shot.
All I want to do is make it gone. Any thoughts on why this happened and solutions before I resort to loading up a Linux live disc and deleting it that way?

Try Fileassassin.

Lockhunter should show what (if anything) is locking the file, for example.

Both freeware.

I've read that you can by editing registry keys, but it was some site like 3 years ago.  Computer is freezing/locking up and unresponsive.  I need to force a dump when this happens.

A:How. Do. You. Force. Windows. To. Create. A. Dump. File. on. System. Freeze.

Hi Rixanne To force Windows to create a dump file on BSODs, follow the instructions below.Click on the Start Menu, then right-click on Computer and select Properties. From there, click on Advanced System Settings in the left pane. Click on the third Settings... button, under the Startup and Recovery category. From there, select Small memory dump (256k) in the second drop down list (under Write debugging information) and make sure that the directory is set to %SystemRoot%\Minidump. From there, a minidump file should be created each time you have a BSOD.

I have a lot of music files. I have ended up with many duplicates, perhaps because when I was learning Windows I didn't quite understand the filing system. To date, I am not sure I do! The column # which states the 'Track Number' which to me is undesirable (I have no use for it), seems to be my problem! When there is a track number - it seems to put it first before all else in the 'Title', namely before the title of the song or the name of the Band.... thereby sorting instead of the title of the song, it sorts by the Track number. Even if I change the defaults and take out the Track # column, it doesn't seem to make a difference when sorting - it still insists on sorting by Track number. The only way I can change this, it seems, is by going into each and every individual file property and physically changing this! I hasve already put many hours into this, and it still seems to be an overwhelming job! Is this not what computers are for, to make life easier.
MY QUESTION; IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE FOLDER OPTIONS TO CHANGE ALL THE FILE PROPERTIES IN THE PARTICULAR FOLDER TO DELETE THE TRACK NUMBER (#) INSTEAD OF ME DOING IT SINGULARLY? IS THERE A DOS COMMAND THAT CAN DO THIS?

I would look for a free audio file tag editor. Many will process in batch mode. I haven't used one in a few years so I am not up on the current features. You might find comparisons of the utilities in places like PCMag.com or just search on "best free Windows tag editor". I have a nice sort tool called Fat Sorter but it only works on FAT partitions. The idea being to force a USB stick to sort according to file name. I don't know if there is a similar utility for NTFS.

The dump file is reffering to Memory Corruption so please follow the below steps
Run the Memory Diagnostic & HD Diagnostic
Also i would recommend to run System Integrity Checker

I often need to reorganise files and sub-folders within the same main folder, for example, move folder from sub-folder named documents to sub-folder named photos. However Explorer in Windows 7 Professional will only allow me to move one folder at a time. When I try to move a second folder I get the message that I can't as the file or folder is open! Of course it is - I'm trying to move files within it! I'm reduced to sneaking up on it every few minutes. This can't be right, please help

I am having a similar issue. I have a few files I've created and worked on in Vista that are on the local C-drive, but happen to be in a shared folder: for example c:\mysharedfolder\file123.jpg

I had worked on this file, then the next day could not access it. I can't delete the file, or copy it, or move it, or rename it. If I try a window just pops up saying calculating and says for hours!

If I right click, I get a menu to pop up, however, if I click properties, nothing happens.

Oddly, I can ZIP the file still. Then I can copy/move/email/etc the zip. If I copy/email the zip file to another Vista machine, or the same machine into a different folder, then unzip the file, the new file is also inaccessible. This happens even on different vista machine.

If I copy that zip to a Win2k/XP machine and unzip it, then it works fine. I can open it up in an imagine browser/editor. I can copy, rename, delete, etc. no problem.

I have other image files in the same folder that are of the same extension/type/etc. and they have no problem at all.

Any ideas?

I contacted MS and they said that my "file" must NOT be Vista compatible. Which makes little/no sense to me. I can understand if he file was corrupt or could not be viewed or opened in an image editing program, but how can it all of the sudden not be deleted/copied/etc?

Other things I've tried:

1) Disabling/removing Anti Virus.
2) booting into Safe Mode
3) removing sharing on the parent folder
4) runnin... Read more

I usually hang around fora dealing with antique farm equipment and always feels sorry for the guy who asks how to adjust the main jet on a Farmall H carb and two out of three responders tell him how to use the Search function. So I've spent a day or two worth of spare time searching through the Tutorials.
I've found a lot of interesting stuff (and a good bit I don't follow) but I haven't found this: When I right click on a folder and then click "New" the only options are "Folder" and "Briefcase."
With XP I would click on a folder, then File up at the top of the Window, then New and and get a menu that included Text Document, Bitmap Image, etc.
This new version of Win Explorer doesn't have File, just Organize.
What'll I do?

A:How to create a file in a folder?

Hello Will, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It depends on what folder you right click in. In system folders, you may only get the Folder option in the New context menu. However, for when you right click and click on "New" on the desktop and in other user folders, you should get the full New context menu list.

If not, then you may be missing a few.

New Context Menu - Remove & Restore Default Menu Items

Hope this helps,
