I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My operating system is Windows XP Home. The system information indicates that I have 640mb of physical memory, but I only have just over 151mb of physical memory available. What happened to all of the memory and how do I fix this so I get the benefits of more memory?

How much memory is listed when you right-click My Computer, Properties?
And where did the 151 number come from?

Hi Jarhead82
I dont think your problem is firefox.I will give you my task master reading with firefox and the desktop.
Desktop only Cpu usage 1 to 2% Pagefile memory 197MB Physical available 1711224K
Firefox Cpu " 1 to 4% Pagefile memory 209MB Physical available 1690728K
How often do you defrag your PC I have also found it is worth removing firefox and all it folders using start and search. My pc uses F8 to go to safe Mode but midway down the list click to start in the last good configeration This will clear any little blip.

Welcome to Bleeping Computer, ed fred. You should be able to go into the BIOS and reduce your on board video memory to a lower setting. Perhaps as low as 32Mbs. I have not seen a motherboard that would allow you to set the on board video to 0, as of yet.Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what caused this. I got this computer back at least 4 or 5 months ago from my uncle who custom builds computers. It was working fine with no problem. But recently, and I don't know what's been causing this, but it's been running low on disk space. I've done the necessary things to try and free up, but it's still looking like a lot of space was used. I'm not sure where it all comes from. The programs I use are CCleaner and Diskeeper. I also have used Revouninstaller in the past, which worked like a charm. But is there anything I can do to free up disk space? A lot of it seems to be useless junk in my C: drive, but I don't wanna sit there and sift through all this stuff for hours. Any help at all would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hmmmm....hard to say, nothing jumping out in log file.

Try a couple tools and report back on performance when complete:

Download WinsockFix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Recently I have noticed that my memory available or free has seemed to go down and the cached memory has increased to the point of 8mb going to almost zero. I have deleted my history and cache and it seems to help but I am concerned because I haven't noticed the loss until recently. Primarily it seems when I run the AVG 2013 virus pgm (free) that the time was excessive. I had been running the program during the night, or early morning, but recently I have seen the "free" memory has been almost depleted. No other problems seen evident.
I am running a PackardBell model 6140, w/8Gb mem, using Win 7.
Just curious about this. Thanks for comments.

does anyone know the reason win7 reports I have 4 gig memory, but says only 2 gig is usable?

A:memory loss

Normally it because Windows has reserved that memory for the cards and other hardware you have installed. (SLI)

I don't see Windows taking 2GB very often, but I see you have SLI running and if you have other cards in the PCI slots or PCIEX16 slots, it could happen.

Hi guys, this is going to be quite tricky to explain as I don't know what is wrong so as to ask a coherent question but here goes......

I seem to be experiencing a major memory leak on my C Drive partition. I've lost up too around 3-4 gigs of space and cannot account for it. I've got a ton of new folders which are now appearing in my C Drive, but they all have very long names made up of a long list of alphamumeric characters. An example: "3e18f4ecfbf29d3c63637243a60a92" When I try to delete these folders I get errors which are telling me there is a file in use or something. Files such as: ASPNET.MSP

I understand that this file somehow relates to microsoft framework, but I installed it properly a few weeks back, or at least I thought I did.

Now I am getting constant memory low errors on my C Drive and everytime I delete something which CAN be deleted such as the odd program or two, the memory just goes in a few hours. Tried defragging, clean-up, then tried spydoctor and ad-aware but to no avail.

Did some research and thought I came across a similar list of problems another user was having. The problem was with something called "Virtuemondo", so I downloaded a program called "Vundofix" which detected an infection and it seemed too repair it, but my memory problem still persists.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and I hope I've been clear in explaining my problem. If you need a system log of my PC, just run me through th... Read more

First of all, you are talking about disk space and not "memory". Memory doesn't change or disappear.

Try one of these apps to see if you can narrow down where your space is being used and what areas are changing:

Disk Pie

But you may be right about an infection. Have you scanned with anti-malware and anti-virus apps?

Over the past few days, I have been burning movies to free up hard drive space. Mainly to download more stuff, but that is not the point So far, I have burnt over 30 movies and deleted many other things- overall, I would give a low guess as 50G worth of stuff. I have download one album (Evolution Rap- it's awesome!), a handful of pictures and a few movies, probably totaling under 4G. But what happens every time I empty the recycle bin? I lose G's. If not immediately, then soon after. So now instead of ~50G free on my hard drive, I have 5G free, and that number keeps dropping. The topper is that I can't burn movies anymore because I don't have enough free space. Ironic much?

Extra recycle bin protection

My experience with this is not completely solved, but it has improved. I believe that my trouble is caused by use of Norton's recycle bin protection. I used this tool to empty its recycle bin. Next I turned it off from protecting all drives. The drive that was in trouble is an external usb drive. Over time it appeared with different drive letters. Norton appeared to track all these drives. Additionally, it seems that system restore was automatically turned on for this drive also. I turned it off for all drives, also.

After performing these tasks, the size being reported was still incorrect. While pondering what next (pehaps 20 minutes), the size was being reported correctly. I frequently used chkdsk /f (from drive properties ! tools) to check my progress. I noticed it changed when I rolled over the icon for the drive. Magic?

I am reposting this, hoping someone with the answer will help me as my system is getting worse. Using WIN8.0. I am plagued by a continuing error or malady. Popping up is a window saying ?High Memory Usage? followed by ?COM.Surogate.? Sometimes a second window pops up with, ? High Disk Usage by Host Processes?. All of this makes my PC run very slow and causes freezing and other problems. Have run System Mechanic and resolved some issues but the problem is still there.

How to I correct for all of this? Thank you, eddie460

first of all you dont need crap like system mechanic usually programs like that cause more problems than they fix.

secondly can you post the specs or make and model of your pc

and lastly can you post a screenshot of tax manager showing the cpu and memory usage.

Hello people,
I have a really bad problem. It started off with dual monitors. When i swithced off my computer and turned it back on all my icons were gone and desktop background was changed. Fist i thought that everything of my hardrive was deleted. But i was wrong. When i go to this file C:\Users\Sendi\Desktop all my icons and stuff are there. I know i can just copy the icons back, but also all my emeory is lost. For example, my games cant find any saved files even though there on my hardrive. It is not a virus as i have scanned my compuet with kaspersky and combofix. None of them have picked up a virus. I have a 500gb hardrive, 4gb ram, 612mb video card. It seems like it has a problem with booting everything off my hardrive properly. Also when i go program files everything is there. When i look at my computer evrything seems normal but nothing is running properly.
If anyone can help me i would really appreciate it. This is a tough one.

Hi Daffy66_87, welcome to TSF..

does BIOS show the correct amount of RAM? To access BIOS, just tap the del or F2 key when you reboot. You need to press the key immediately, when your system powers up...if you see the Windows loading bar, then you were too slow. In BIOS, you should be able to see details on installed RAM. Take care not to change any settings in BIOS as it can cause problems if not used correctly.

Also, this is probably the last thing to want to read right now but programs which promise to cure/fix registry issues usually only cause more issues.

A little bit involved and difficult to explain.! My Outlook program started to act in astrange way. It would come up and within a few seconds left the screen. A:Mass System memory loss

Vista uses disk storage space (not really called memory) to store System restore points and shadow copies. The maximum default is 15% of your disk size. So if you had a 500GB disk it could use 75GB for this storage so everytime a new restore point is automatically set, it seems like disk space is lost. You can delete all but the last point by using disk cleanup if you want. Unless you are really short of disk space, I would just let it do it's thing.

I got a new compaq CQ5034UK computer with a 584gb hard drive and had Vista installed just a couple of days ago. I put on some programs and and it took up a few gigs. Today I suddenly lost 50gb of free space without installing anything. After that I did a few virus scans with Microsoft Security Essentials and Advanced system care. they did nothing. I checked my hard drive and I lost another few gigs of free space out of no where. I keep on checking the system and gigabytes were adding on. I checked online and somebody said it was that the system restore points. I restored my computer to yesterday and it added on another gigabyte. I now 441gb of free space and I keep looking to see what's taking it all up but my calculations show that the stuff installed on my computer should only take up about 50gb. Some help would be nice.

My computer should have about 120 gigs free but it only has 89! Can you help? (Uniblue power suite found and removed 2261 infected files from my computer)

I took the 5 step process and had a problem or two. 1st - panda antivir couldnt scan my computer (becasue its on vista) 2 - i unzipped ie-spyware but am not sure how to run it. I have a lot of anti virus and registry cleaners non of which are on the remove lists of steps 1 or 2.

Also, what options should i enable on spyware blaster?

Here is my dss report

I recently had a BSOD on my laptop which i believe was caused by a recent software installation, prior to the installing i had created a restore point so i rolled back to before installation. Once restarted i was shown the message "system has recovered from a serious error". Things appeared ok, however i now have only 222MB of memory where i previously had approx 750ish, 512mb of which i purchased seperately and added. Could anyone provide an explanation of what i could do to resolve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Recently with in the past 24 hours, my computer has been having "quicken" virtual memory loss. Like where I had to have my computer on for over a week before the "Virtual Memory is Too Low" to pop up now pops up after being on for just an hour and a half, I've tried searching google but I keep getting the same thing "Increase your virtual memory" which I have done but doesn't help at all. Anyone would know why this is happening... did my RAM burn out or is it something that can be fixed with out having to open my computer?

I have a Dell Lattitude D800 Laptop with Intel 1400 mhz processor, 512MB of RAM, 27.8 GB of memory. I run Windows XP Professional, Version 2002.

A few nights ago, I left my computer on overnight and lost around 1GB of memory without any explanation. I do not have any peer-to-peer programs or download programs installed except for a bittorrent client, which I use to download video files and which was not turned on. One night later, I inexplicably lost ANOTHER 300MB of memory without downloading anything (except for automatic updates to my anti-virus and Windows Update) or making any considerable changes to my computer. The only weird thing I've noticed is Windows Update seemingly downloading more than usual.

I constantly run Windows Firewall coupled with AVG FREE and AVG Anti-Spyware. Full scans of both AVG programs have come up with nothing. I also run CrapCleaner v 1.36.430 on a daily basis.

So, my questions are:

1. Are there any programs that would display the record of changes to my hard drive's memory over the past week so that I can see specifically where this 1.3 GB of random disappeared memory went?

2. What precautions should I take? What can I do that would make identifying the possible problem easier?

3. What problems could I be possibly dealing with?

Hi, I started my laptop as nominal this morining but it failed to run my OS - Win XP Proffessional. The disc was running and I accessed the system controls. I then used Norton Disc Dr and repaired the FAT and some files. On booting the lap top then fired up with Win Millenium (which I had upgraded from 4 years ago). Some recent files and docs are available but I seem to have lost a number of recent programmes. I used a system disc but it will not let me access the C: drive.

Does anybody know how I might recover the 'lost' data and programmes.

I do not want to reload XP as I fear I will loose the files permanently.

Grateful for any suggestions, Thanks.

Hi, and thanks for reading my post.

I have a laptop using Vista Home Premium 32-bit Operating System.

It doesn't happen every single day, but every couple of days when I go to check my Hard Drive space, it seems to have lost 1Gig of memory, give or take a couple hundred Megabytes. I don't download anything much anymore, and when I do, it's no more then ~30MB. Yet it either counts it as taking up more memory then that or it just decides "Hey, let's take some memory away."

When I had finished downloading and installing everything I needed, I had roughly 40Gigs left. Now, I have 29.5Gigs after only downloading and installing a few programs that were Megabytes.

I also clean my disk with the Disk Cleaner that comes with the Computer and I also use ccleaner to scan and clean my Hard Drive and Registry. It cleans up alot, yet alot is still missing.

If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Poker158149.

A:Close programs to prevent memory loss. Please help!

Try to reboot the machine. If it still continues test your memory
RAM - Test with Memtest86+
If you pass memory test
Go to bottom task bar and right click
bring up task manager, go to resource monitor under performance tab
Then go to memory tab. What is using all the memory?

I have a emachine running Windows XP, Avast, and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both Firefox and IE are slow to connect to the internet. all my scans have come back clean. Also,I have 512mb of RAM installed in it, yet it is now showing only 368mb of RAM. Can someone help me figure out if the two things are related and what I'm infected with. Earlier today I noticed a AU_.exe process running but haven't seen it at all this evening. I hope someone can help me make since of all this.

Not sure if I should be posting in this section...? My laptop is an Acer Travelmate 3212WXMi, and in the past two years the speed has started to slow down a lot. I noticed that the CPU usage was frequently at 100%, and processes that I did not seem to be voluntarily running were taking up a substantial percentage.

Some of the processes are as following:

- SE8CC6.EXE - although this seems to change every time I start up, but it'll always be a process with two alphabets in front, one number, two more alphabets and one more number behind.

- VM305_STI.exe
- PccNTMon.exe
- csrss.exe
- lsass.exe
- Ktp.exe

Also, there are at least 7 svchost.exe processes running, and some of them take up about 10-almost 30% of CPU.

I would like to find out therefore whether my computer is infected by a virus, or is it OK to end these processes... Or is there some way I can save on CPU usage? I find it highly annoying that I have to wait for long periods for things to start up (or even for my mouse cursor to move) and when I play music using Windows Media Player it becomes highly jerky when the CPU usage is high.

Also, I noticed that my C:/ keeps losing memory space, and I don't know why. For instance, I don't add alot of things to my C drive ordinarily, but practically every time I open the 'My Computer' folder I see that the space has dropped. I try to regularly use disk cleanup and delete the old system restore points, as well as get rid of temporary files but this i... Read more

If it's changing on every startup this is almost definitely a virus or trojan of some kind.

Critical Windows services. You cannot kill these using task manager. If you kill them using another program (i.e. Process Explorer, Pocket Killbox, etc) you will likely experience a very sudden and abrupt system crash followed by a BSoD.
