I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Being a Mozilla Firefox convert, the only times that I use IE 6.0 is when I have to use a website that does not work with Firefox 1.0PR, or with Firefox in general. The prime example of this, and the reason I'm having to write this plea for help, is Windows Update (www.windowsupdate.com).

Whenever I check for updates, it scans and lists the needed updates all right, but when the download dialog appears, nothing happens. Once, I had it work for almost 7 hours overnight while I slept and by the morning, nothing had download. It was still saying "Preparing to download." Perhaps IE is punishing me for switching? LOL Just kidding, although I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to do that to people who set a competitor's browser as their default.

So, now I get the list of updates that I need and download them from the Microsoft Download Center (www.microsoft.com/downloads). However, I would like to get the Critical Update Notification tool, but all the places that I've visited that talk about the Critical Update Notification tool say that it is only available off of Windows Update. Microsoft Downloads does not offer the CUN at all, at least not to any of my knowledge.

Can anyone help me?

Win 7 64 Windows Update not working (post migration), nor is Windows Update Readiness tool installing. I have renamed catroot and stopped services, nothing working. I just migrated HD to a hybrid solid state (Seagate Momentus). I had this problem both with Acronis 2009 and Acronis 2013, and Windows Backup would not create a recoverable partition (always said file not available about 30% through the recovery). I have installed the Intel IDE ATA drivers, and scoured the help topics. I have tried everything. I could really use some help.

The error I receive when attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool is:

"Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247"

The Microsoft FixIt and Control Panel FixIt says it has fixed the problem, but Update does not work. Nothing is working, but the OS is healthy, the disk is healthy. The sfc/scannow doesn't reveal any corrupted components.

I followed all of these instructions before attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool:

Hello everyone,

I've been having a terrible time trying to diagnose and fix corrupted system files. I have recently updated to windows 10 during the free upgrade process. I was running Windows 7 Pro before I updated.

I have tried sfc /scannow command multiple times, in safe mode and in normal operation.

Every time I get this message:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios."

So researching online, I found that using the DISM tool will fix this issue.

However every time I run the command, I get this:

"Error: 0x800f081f

The source files could not be found.
Use the "Source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see Configure a Windows Repair Source.

The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log"

I've even tried mounting the windows 10 iso that I downloaded from the media creation tool and running it again, however I still get the same message to no avail. I've seen other forums with users saying to use the original windows 10 iso and not to use the iso created by the media creation tool. However I can't seem to find this file and am not sure it would work anyways.

Confirmed.   I suspect that the option to enable Administrator tools to show up in a search needs to be re-allowed but I can't find it any more.  It always was somewhat obscure...

Wow.  Is this really WAD?  Win-W  Admin tools  only opens Administrative Tools in FE and System Information (msinfo32.exe) can be used from there.
Even stranger,  msinfo32  is only found using Everywhere?  Not in Files?  And I had to type that much, nothing less?
I can't remember if it was ever in Win-X but it isn't now.

FWIW I can still find  msinfo32.exe  via Run...  so I haven't missed this so far.  <eg>

Sorry to hear of your predicament.

First, I'd have a little chat with the person who installed the "not genuine" copy of XP. If it was something you paid for, you should either get a refund or a reinstall (including CD) with a copy that can be registered.

Failing that, you might be able to buy a replacement CD directly from Microsoft. As long as you still have a valid key and can convince them that your original purchase (pre-reformatting) was legitimate and registered to you, they'll probably send you a CD for a fairly minimal amount.

If that doesn't work, it sounds as though purchasing the Windows Genuine Advantage Kit would be your best bet. I'd imagine it wouldn't cost as much as buying a brand new copy of XP. Also check to see if you can get a CD with the kit.

Hope this helps a bit. Good luck!

My computer is running Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows Update refuses to download and install the version 1511 update. I've tried to press "Search for updates" multiple times, but it still keeps telling me that it's updated. The last update (apart from Windows Defender updates) was KB3163017 which was installed 8 days ago. The installation of Windows 10 itself was made longer than one month ago so the 31 day protection shouldn't be an issue either.

I've tried to search for a solution, but all I could find included downloading the .ISO file and install it manually, which I'd like to avoid as I then must burn it on a disc and I'd prefer if Windows Update could just take care of it as it does with the other updates.

So my questions are:

Is this normal, should Enterprise versions get these major updates via Windows Update or not?Is there anyone here that also use the Enterprise version and have received the update via Windows Update? Are there any solutions to this problem apart from updating with an .ISO?

A:Windows 10 Enterprise - Windows Update Can't Find Update 1511

I don't think Enterprise upgrades to next major builds through Windows Updates. That is so the corporation using Enterprise can maintain control of the versions of software on their computers which is extremely important for compatibility reasons among others.

Why can't you just mount a downloaded ISO file and run setup.exe from the mounted ISO file? Why do you have to burn it to DVD first?

My Windows Update is failing. For whatever reason, my Vaio cannot install Windows 7 SP1. The update fails and it returns variations of unknown error or errors whose numbers are nowhere to be found when I search. (I've tried it 7 times, got 5 5 error numbers and 2 unknown errors.)

Right now, I'm following the troubleshooting steps at microsoft.com. It had me run the Windows Update troubleshooter, which claimed to make changes so the update would install. It didn't install.

The next step is to download and install the System Update Readiness Tool. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...Readiness-Tool

The site claims that it could take "several minutes" and to not close the installer "even if the progress bar appears to stop, don't cancel the installation." Fine, I haven't. But the progress bar hasn't moved. As in, there's no green in the bar at all. It has been running for over two hours. I know I got the right file; I checked my Windows 7 Version before I downloaded.

It's just hanging at "Installing Hotfix for Windows (KB947821) (update 1 of 1)... "

Hi There i've seen some threads here about the Windows Update Readiness Tool and that this forum hase some knowledgeable members around. So here i am and thanks for having me..

My problem started with finding out, with trying to activate WXP mode in, my Add\Remove Windows Features wizard showes blank. And while repairing and updating also found out IE11 doesn't install, getting error 0x80070643. So along the way i stumble accross the WUPR tool and a MS Technet tutorial to repair the errors with it. So far so good followed the tutorial and managed to fix the most errors but 1 (See added log)

I just can't seem to find "Package_for_KB2870699~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.2.1.0" mum and cat. They are not included in the KB2870699 update, i find Package_1, Package_2, rtm, bf, blabla so on, but just a plain Package_for_.. simply is nowhere to find. Tried installing KB2870699 again, it finisched, but didn't repair. The WUPR tool log stays as is. And IE11 still does not want to install.

Main question is:
Does anyone know under which rock Microsoft is hiding these .mum and .cat file
"Package_for_KB2870699~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.2.1.0"?

You need to rename the 'blind' update.cat and update.mum files from the KB extract appropriately - which the installer does during the process.

If you can't/don't want to do it yourself, let me know and I'll post tehm together with a fix protocol.

I'm intrigued that you dn't appear to have the expected errors from an IE10 install - how/why did you 'fix' it, as there was nothing amiss to fix (it's a coding error that's been carried through to IE11 as well, and is not a problem as such)

If this happens to you, try using System Restore...then when you are notified that there are updates available, deselect all of them and then install them one at a time...You may have to restart your machine after some of them...

In the past, I have lost some Windows function or personal setting after doing Updates and the above has 'fixed' it every time.
It may be just due to my set up or machine but it seems to happen when there are more than just a few 'Recommended' or 'Important' updates (7 or more) but it also happens sometimes if I select some 'Optional' updates.

Best way is to create a ISO using the MCT then just mount it under Windows 8.1 and run setup.exe from the mounted ISO. Save the ISO in case you need it again or use Rufus to create a bootable UEFI/GPT flash drive you can use top reinstall or do a clean install at some point.

How to update a Windows Defender Offline Scan USB Tool before using it on an offline computer
-
Good morning All,
Yesterday I created a Windows Defender Offline Scan USB Tool to scan an old XP Notebook that is offline and due to its out of date OS will remain offline. Files will be moved to and from my desktop via a USB Drive and I want to make sure the XP machine is totally clean before putting it into operation.

When I ran the tool and saw it needed updating, which I can't do offline, I came here for advice. Arc gave me Brinks detailed instructions on making and updating the USB Tool.

"Note: If you run the Windows Defender Offline Tool again on the same USB flash drive, and if the following conditions below are met, the tool will only download new updated malware definitions (approx. 69.48 MB) and update the USB drive without reformatting it. [... & 3 Conditions]"

This morning I verified the used space on the USB drive before and after I ran the file <mssstool32.exe> a 2nd time on the same USB Drive and found the used space increased +/- 1 MB. However, running it again on the XP machine I received the same "Virus and Spyware Definitions: Out of Date" message (attached).
[To be sure running the creation tool twice consecutively was not the issue I ran it again 2 more times with no additional changes to the used space.] And another try on the XP machine gave me the same "Needs Update" message.

Now I am wondering how the XP machine k... Read more

I have a new laptop with Windows XP SP2 on it, IE6 (though I use Firefox, not IE), and MS Office 2003 Student Edition. The latest update that popped up as "high priority" from Windows Update is this GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374).

It sounds like you have to install it then run it and then visit MS Office website to check for updates...? Is this worth doing? Can it cause more problems than it will help? (I thought I've read about issues when updating MS Office with security patches...? And that you have to download yet something else to even check for Office security updates...?)

Or do Office security updates come through Windows Update, and I don't need to worry about this? (But if that's the case, then why even have this GDI+ thing available?)

I'm always worried about ending up with a bunch of conflicts with other programs like AVG, ZA, AutoGK, DVDShrink, etc. And I'm always hesitant to install something that has to run on my system.

I've got AVG and ZA, keep both up to date, and I have Automatic Updates turned on just to let me know when there's a critical update (so I don't have to visit the Windows Update site to get updates).

I was thinking I would only do the updates to Office that come through Automatic Updates and not worry about any others...

Also, what's the difference between Microsoft Update and Windows Update? Is it better to have Microsoft Update, or does that have its own set of problems associated with it? (A... Read more

A:Questions About Microsoft Gdi+ Detection Tool & Microsoft Update Vs. Windows Update

Well to start off the difference between windows update and microsoft update is as follows. Windows update is what originally comes with the computer and only updates the windows platform. If you choose to upgrade to the microsoft update it will check all of your microsoft programs for updates.
As far as going to the office website for updates... unless you want to install non-critical updates to your office suite then you shouldn't have to at all. Finally - that GDI+ detection tool is the little program microsoft uses to scan your computer for any of their products - that is if you use microsoft update and not the original windows update.
So if you like your computer to maintain critical updates by itself for the microsoft programs than yes use microsoft update and yes install the GDI+ decection tools.

Hope this helps you out!

2 problems... started when Windows 10 update stopped installing updates. Contacted Microsoft who took over and tried to fix the problem. They tried doing in-process update using the Media Media Creation Tool and that fails also. The latter stops after starting and shows 'There was a problem running this tool. We are not sure what happened but we're unable to run this software on your PC. Uninstalled Norton Security and tried many other things before they said... Need to erase everything and start over with a fresh install of WIndows10. This was a Windows 10 update from what originally was Windows 7 Pro. Even have valid new Key from Microsoft. Can't create ISO or burn to USB when using Media Creation Tool. Get random errors that are.... 0x800704DD-0x90016 or 0x800706D9-0x90016 or 0x8007043C-0x90016. As for Windows update. If I manually download the specific update and do a manual install, I can get all updates except two to install. The two updates that do not install are Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135173) - Error 0x800706d9 and ecurity Update for Adobe Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3135782) - Error 0x800706d9. (Seems many other users have problem trying to get these two updates installed also. Any advice or help is appreciated that might keep me from doing a complete reformat and reinstall of Windows 10.

A:Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - update chaos

Make sure and create a new restore point prior to performing these steps.
Use the Everything search engine, then copy and paste KB890830 into the everything search bar. Then delete the updates with Unlocker.
You will need to watch out when installing unlocker, although it is a free program that works very well. It is bundled with crapware.

I don't really "use" Windows Malicious Software per se, but I've always downloaded the "Removal Tool" as part of my Windows Updates each month. Is WMS a separate program? And what is this tool?

I thought this thing was something you download and it runs once (supposedly), though I've never noticed anything running when I've downloaded this update in the past.

Would there be a WMS program on my computer? Or is this update an .exe in of itself that just runs once like it says? I guess I'm not really clear as to what this is and what it does (though I've always downloaded it).

Does everyone usually download this update each month? Any reason not too?

I see that it's like 7.7 Megs this time, which seems pretty darn big...

(However, when I go to the link for more info on it, it says it's 6.6 Megs... why is that?)

Thanks for the help!

I already tried to install this: Update is available that prepares Windows 8 and Windows RT-based computers for the update to Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 RT but still there is nothing in the MS Store to update me to 8.1 Please help me, thank you

A:Cannot find update to Windows 8.1

I think there are at least one (possibly more) specific 8.0 updates that need to be present before you can see the 8.1 upgrade via the store but I can't put my finger on it at the moment.

I know this or very similar issue has been addressed on this forum. You might want to go through this tutorial and see if any applies. I also suggest you try a search and look through some of the other tutorials.

Just prepping a new HP 8440p for a member of the management team and windows update won't find SP1

i do a lot of installs and update patching on new machines and this is the first time since SP1 came out that update hasn't found it

ideas??

or should i just rock the manual install

cheers

A:Windows Update won't find SP1

I'm guessing that you have checked windows update manager?
Yeah, the best route would probably then be the manual installer. I installed it with the manual installer and it was a (slow) breeze once I had got the right file. Invade you are wondering which one it is from the MS website, unfortunately it's the large iso file. There are three installer inside the iso, so I would recommend you just open in it winrar and take the right one out rather than burning it to a DVD. Manual instals are generally better to do as windows update doesn't really give you much of a representation of progress.
Nb. The SP1 installer may seem that it's broken when staying on one point for ages, but it just takes a long time
