Flickering Issue on Yoga 730

Q: Flickering Issue on Yoga 730

My laptop has had occasional problems with black flickering from day one, but now it's a pretty constant occurrence. I've done all the driver-type things but I really think it's a hardware issue, as slightly adjusting the screen often "fixes" the problem, at least for a while, and the flickering is never shown on duplicated screens. Here's mine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5sxB4GO6uo I love this laptop when it works. But seeing the hundreds and hundreds of other similar comments and videos online is making me very frustrated. Why hasn't Lenovo acknowledged this as a hardware problem? Why are so many people sending their laptop in for repairs, Lenovo keeping the laptop for a month or more, then sending back an equally faulty unit? This is my work laptop so I can't just lose it for a month anyway. It just seems so unethical for Lenovo not to issue a recall on this product or refund people who have purchased them. Has anyone found a successful workaround yet? There are lots of videos of people taking their laptops apart and having some luck with tightening screws and so forth, but even some of those posts have comments later that it only worked for a little while...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This seems to be  a problem with many yoga 730-13 users, My screen keeps flickering, to a point where i constantly have to adjust my screen to stabilize the screen. Sometime it gets unbearable to a point where I cannot even use my laptop anymore. This has happened to me previously and at first i installed the new BIOS update and did whatever Lenovo told me to do, but it did not work. Eventually, my laptop would not turn on for some reason. I did send it back for repair, and the laptop seemed to be working fine for that first week, then the screen flickering issue happened again. At this point, I am lost at what to do? has anyone else found a solution to this problem? is there a way lenovo could possibly recall this model, or atleast give our money back since this seems to be a manufacturer issue?

I still can't use my touchpad.  I've tried driver updates, checked f6 but still nothing.  Due to the limited number of usb ports I need the touch pad to work.  Even when the touchpad is not turned off (f6) there is no synaptics drives listed in device manager.  Even when I run Lenovo's system check for upadate it does not identify that it is missing.  Also, from what I can tell there isn't even a serivce listed in Computer Management for the touchpad / synaptics. Please provide me with a solution as quickly as possible.  Thank you.  Peter D

Hi there, I bought a Lenovo Yoga 910, Intel Core i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD 4K laptop in September 2017. I've had no major issues with it until the past few days. What is happening is that when I'm watching a video, on seemingly any player, after a while the screen starts going crazy, it's fairly hard to describe so I'll link a video to it. https://sendvid.com/eoi9k12k Once that starts to happen, any time I mouse over anything the screen flickers, and anytime I open anything (e.g. an internet tab/the start menu) it goes back to the original freak out style. If I manage to minimise everything and sit on the home screen with the mouse not touching any icons then the screen is fine.  I feel like there was an update fairly recent prior to this starting, so whether that is the cause or not I'm not sure. I'm a standard computer user, so for information that is required I'll likely need pointing out how exactly I go about finding said information or performing said task if it's not pretty basic.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi...I am hoping to get some guidance on an issue that I am having.  We bought my daughter a Yoga 730 for college in July and she started experiencing issues with the screen flickering to the point she cannot use it except for in tablet mode.  In tablet mode she says it does not flicker at all but it is harder for her to use (and she honestly should be able to use it as a laptop also..that is why we chose the Yoga).  I purchased it via Amazon and their tech support sent links to update the BIOS etc. which my daughter has done but the flicker continues. My problem(s) are these 1) Get the flicker issue resolved.  Since it works fine in tablet mode it most likely is not a software issue and I have read quite a few posts online about the wire to the display being pinched but need someone who knows about these things to take a look at it and resolve the issue.  2) She is at college 13 hours away and needs to use her laptop on a daily basis for school.  The 13 hours means I cannot drive over to her dorm and take a look at it and her need to use it means she cannot go without a machine for long. If someone could provide some insight into how Lenovo typically handles these types of issues and what type of turnaround time she can expect?  There is a warranty place near where she is at school and that might help with the shipping time etc. but not sure. Thanks in advance....

Okay great machine when its working, after 10 months screen started with White flickering screen, returned under warranty and LCD Module replaced. 1 month later same problem and shop tech guy had a look said it was an update issue and it appeared to be okay for the next 5 months, now its worse than the first time as the screen also goes between totally Black or flashing White screen. Using an external screen as it?s the only way I can access laptop, I searched this forum and done all the recommended fixes such as checking windows updates, Bios and Driver updates, also the one on starting up in safe-mode to check screen all with no resolution. What I have noticed is that when started from cold it works fine but after a couple off minuets it starts to flicker then after about 5 min screen goes totally. Possible heat or expansion issue? Now from what I have gleaned from the forum, this indicates a hardware issue, question is what or where in the hardware is the problem as this appears to be a common fault and you would expect Lenovo to have somewhere a more definitive explanation and how its fixed. Or is the screen connector the problem after reading the comments on this video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmSeKcFg3xU] and was replacing the LCD Module a red hearing and was re-fixing the connector during the repair, is what fixed the flickering screen?

Over the last day or two, I've noticed the screen on my Lenovo 710-15 flickering numerous times. This used to happen every once in awhile, but since I did the latest BIOS update in the last 24 hours, it's happening way too often now. The machine was just purchased last month! I noticed there was a thread for other style model Yoga machines that have the problem, but not for this model.

Hey guys The screen of my Yoga 900 Screen has started to flicker, when I push the screen backwards. The screen turns black and there is a line on the screen for a slit second. It doesn't happen alsways and it's not always in the same position of the screen. Sometimes the screen turns back on as soon as I move the screen, sometimes it needs some more moving. I've conntected the laptop with an extended display, and it seems that only the screen of the laptop has this problem (no flickering on the second screen). Is there anything I can do or is it a warranty case? (It's a new laptop, I've bought it in December) Thanks for your help!

I purchased the Lenovo Yoga 730 Ideapad 15" over a year ago and have been recently very disappointed. When I first bought this laptop it was fast and ran perfectly. Now my display is practically unusable from the screen flickering. The only way I can use this laptop is if I hold the screen in weird positions or adjust the screen constantly while using it. I have read online that I am not the only one with this problem. Every article I read is that you have to just "update" the laptop, however, every response to that answer has not lead to a solution, including me. I hope Lenovo is able to make up for this hardware issue and come up with a solution soon.

Hi, I have Yoga 730 15IKB with UHD display and nVidia GTX 1050 4GB graphics. The laptop is amazing. however I experience little screen flickering (more like dimming) at the moments my pro apps utilize nVidia GPU for computing (the apps are Substance Painter, Davinci Resolve, Cinema 4D, Fusion and others). I have no such a trouble on my desktop PC with these apps. 1. When I disable nVidia in bios - there is no flickering2. When I connect external monitor to HDMI (with nVidia on) - there is no flickering, I dont even have to restart the app, and as soon as I disconnect HDMI - flickering comes back3. When I disable Intel HD 620 in device manager and run only on nVidia - no flickering. (in this case windows says the monitor is connecter to generic microsoft adapter and refresh rate is written 64hz instead of 59hz when Intel HD is on).4. The flickering is happening only inside the application window: for example taskbar is not flickering! that's really weird I've tried different drivers for nVidia from Lenovo website, from nVidia website, the same for Intel. I even tried to reinstall windows. It still looks like software issue (probably related to refresh rate but not for sure), nVidia customer support was investigating this case for a while and found no solution, for example in games it's not happening.  Tried to capture it - https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IIe6zCNSNHecDzw1MDMWXAtsG2n0zyF- a bit hard to see , but it's visible , and in rea... Has anyone experienced flickering on their HDR screen when the brightness is set to low levels?  I've been having this issue since day 1, before and after BIOS upgrades that were recently released.  It happens no matter which program is open - though it seems more prominent when the computer is being used vs. sitting idle.  I've checked and have all of the latest Lenovo updates as well as Windows updates.  I tried to take a video of the issue (attached) which might be hard to see - but it's very prominent when you're actually using the computer in a dark environment.  Anyone have ideas of what might be wrong - could this simply be a defective device?

For some reason my screen on my laptop spontaneously flickers and basically looks like it's having a seizure. I've tried updating the display driver and updating the system and neither worked. I've also tried the solution that requires you to go to safe mode to disable "Windows error reporting" and "Problems Report and Solutions" and it still hasn't stopped flickering. I bought the laptop about a month ago and the flickering started about a week/week and a half ago. I'd strongly prefer to fix it at home and I really don't want to have to return it to Best Buy to buy a different laptop. Any suggestions/solutions?

Let me introduce myself. I was a subject matter expert for Microsoft among many other roles. I have had the misfortune of paying money to buy one of these laptops. It has to be the worst laptop I have ever bought, serviced, or worked on. The battery life, sound, and just everything is very poor. Not what was promised by the sales people. My main issue is the flickering screen. IT IS A HARDWARE ISSUE !!!!! This company distributed this laptop, with this very horrible problem but refuse to acknowledge it is a problem with hardware. Over a year now and they will ask you to update drivers, do a restore. Anything apart from admit that the problem is with their laptop and they have had thousands returned. They do not want a recall.  Very disappointed with this company and I have a 6 hour journey to Bangkok for them to tell me the same things. I just want my money back. I am even considering going down the legal channels for them to admit the problem.

Hi there, First time poster, so apologies if I'm not 100% sticking to protocol here! The issue I'm having is one that has been posted about time and again on Lenovo Forums - the screen flickering/blackness of the Yoga 520 (I'm not sure if it's affecting other Yoga systems, too, but certainly the 520). I've had my laptop a couple of months, and from around 2 weeks I have been afflicted with this horrible issue. Essentially, the screen randomly starts flickering like crazy and going black sometimes. This makes the laptop completely unusable until such a time as the machine starts behaving itself again (this can take a longggg time). I have taken a video in case people don't understand the situation, and this doesn't even show the worst of it:https://www.dropbox.com/s/swa41r7u6g4ndot/20180214_173640%20%281%29.mp4?dl=0 When it starts flickering and going black, the system is almost entirely unusable. Sometimes I'm able to get use by scrolling down from the top of a webpage or zooming in. These methods occasionally sedate the screen flickering, but not always. I have tried pretty much every 'solution' that I have seen offered about this issue and have had no luck whatsoever. These include disabling and enabling the touchscreen and graphics drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling these drivers, resetting the whole system, cleaning all caches, doing a static discharge, searching for driver updates, adjusting the brightness, etc, etc. The list goes on and on..... Hi zunny,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You can have the screen checked in the BIOS and see if changing angles will recreate the lines or even the black screen. You can compare the display also by connecting it to any external monitors too.

To access the BIOS, shutdown the machine then press the Novo button (item5 page 10).

If the same lines happen in the BIOS and absent in the external display then best to call in tech support for service.

I hope this helps answer your query.
Update us how things go.

Regards

Hi I have a Yoga 720 15ikb that survived a motorcycle crash a while back. It still works very well but I've noticed 2 issues.1 - The screen has a slight flicker in brightness2 - The battery doesn't last as long as it should (System estimated 2 hours on 50% brightness, nothing running aside AV, steam, audio, etc)I opened the back panel and did a cursory check and didn't notice any bad connections or damaged parts (aside from the damaged case). I've seen some people have problems with adaptive brightness causing a flicker but I can't find any setting for that on the computer. I checked the drivers and ran Lenovo's driver scan but no updates. As far as the battery goes, I've had the laptop for about a year and a half and while I know the battery loses capacity over time but this seems too low.Any help is much appreciated, laptop is out of warranty but I am very comfortable working on it myself. I started having a problem with my screen when I tried to install a program called Monosnap. At first my computer screen was completely white and I had a hard time seeing anything. I uninstalled the program and it got a little better. Virus scans said I didn't catch anything. I reset to my previous Windows back up point and it got a little better. It still had like a white film over the screen with like a halo of pure color around the edges. Then I reinstalled the display driver and that fixed the problem with the permanent white film over everything, except now it randomly flickers completely white, with verticle lines. I've included a picture.

Welcome to the Lenovo community!

This issue may occur due to several reasons. Let us start with opening Excel in safe mode. To do that, follow the steps below.

Hold the Windows key and press R, type excel /safe (note there is a space between excel and /).

If the application works fine safe mode, try disabling the add-ins for the application and check the result.
