Q: XP-can't change users-does not show all users.

When windows starts up, I have both users on the screen.But, when I go to log out of one to another,I don't have a choice of users. It will only allow me to log off only without having a choice to log into to 2 users? Help.

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.

So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.

Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.  The advice told me to go into Services and find two files on the list and make sure they were both started:

How do you get a map of all people using you network and can you set it up somehow to alert you if someone tries to access your network? I don't have this happening but would like to know how to see everyone currently using my home network and yes it is protected in case you want to know.

I've seen a few posts with this problem but none of the suggestions have helped (short of reformatting the hard drive and going through a reinstall to include all drivers and software.

I am trying to assist a friend. Due to other issues she was having with her stand-alone (i.e., not networked) Gateway 500SE PC, about two weeks ago I completely reformatted her hard drive, reinstalled Windows XP, reinstalled all her software and drivers, and ran Microsoft update to ensure everything was current. She indicated that she hadn't changed anything since then but when she turned her computer on this morning, no users were displayed in the Windows Log-on screen.

I tried to use the Control-Alt-Delete sequence (twice) to bring up a user log-in screen but entering either of the two user names (one of which has no password) resulted in a dialog indicating an incorrect domain.

Then I tried boot in the Safe mode but the process led to a request for the Administrator Password. No Administrator password is set but hitting "ENTER" gets rejected as an invalid password.

I tried repairing XP using her install disk but after running that process, I had the exact same issue - no users listed on the log-on page.

This is about the third time in the past year that she has had this exact same problem with her computer so I'm spending more time on it reformatting and reinstalling than she is using it for Web access and e-mail (her primary requirements).

I have 3 users set up on my PC. I see all 3 on the logon screen. I can sign on to each one. Up until last night, I could see all 3 when exploring the c-drive. Now, all I see is 1 of them. This is what I see under Users:

ADMIN <--this is an administrator account.
Default
Default.migrated
Public
User

ADMIN is the only user I see. I can see it while logged on to each account. I have an online backup service which used to see all of the users and backed them up. Last night, it couldn't find them. What could have happened? Should I try restoring to the last restore point? Thanks.

Hey Guys,

If you are using Kaspersky on Windows XP, and your Blue Shift is not working, I may have a solution for you. If you go into Kapersky, go to My Security Zone and then application activity. Go to Category and then click all. Scroll down until you find everything to do with Blue Shift ( Half Life Launcher, installation etc). Right click on each of these and change the status to Trusted. The game should work now. I hope this helps I've had the problem for a while and it was driving me nuts. I'd also like to thank the user "fragger" for giving me the idea to look at Kaspersky. If your reading this, hope it helps you out buddy.

Can anyone help me regain Security Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder which I lost while looking at the access rights. I mistakenly closed the box while playing with the access rights and lost any access to the file.
I pulled the access rights to the file using icacls they are below.

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

User 1 logs in and works does whatever... Doesn't log out but screensaver goes back to user screen. 
 
User 2 logs in (switching users - not logging out user 1) and gets to work. 
 
Sometime later (ie. not right away) and not at a prescribed time, the network stops working.  
 
I try to disable / enable the network adapter and the machine freezes.   Reboot fixes problem.
 
If user 1 or user 2 is the only one logged in then never a problem.
 
Anyone heard of this?

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.
 
Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

Hello Frank, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you have the Windows 10 Home edition, then it will not have Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc) included in it. It's only available in the Pro and Enterprise editions instead.

If you like, you could use step 3 in OPTION THREE of the tutorial below list users in a group.

Got a problem here with a classroom full of Windows XP Pro PCs, where if I put new shortcuts into All Users\Desktop, when a user logs on they can only see the shortcut as an unknown file type which does not run. Any existing shortcuts in All Users\Desktop work ok, just not any new ones!

The PC's are on a Windows 2003 Server network (with AD) and have local user profiles.

working with vista homeprem sp2 32bit here. ran a quick avast scan a few minutes ago, it caught some small-time junk in the temporary internet files (which were purged easily enough), but it also pointed out C:\users\all users as "the system cannot find the path specified". so I open up windows explorer and try to go there. cue the "refers to a location that is unavailable" error message. now, I don't usually need to prod around in there so I'm not familiar with what normally happens, but I know vista loves to have a bunch of directories displayed that are shortcuts it uses for people who leave "hide protected OS files" checked (I don't, I want to see what's where) which really ought to not be shown when you're not hiding stuff but I digress, that's for MS to be groused at after win8 flops.

SO. should I panic that I've had another thing sneak past the security screens (mvp hosts file, spyware blaster, avast's shields, mbam scans)? nothing else seems out of sorts, but one man's paranoia is another man's preparation, and all.

Hi everyone,

I am the web masters of a local snowmobile club and our new website is having a few problems with printing. Please take a look at the site, http://www.strathroysnoblizzards.com/Strathroy_Sno-Blizzards/index.html

As you can see it has a black background which when printed on my Mac OS X has no problems with printing (it leaves out black background and keeps the text and images) and prints everything.

The problem is that one of our members are ticked that they can not print the site because of the black showing up above the text and images and I really don't want to change the background because it look good the way it is, so is there any way to change to printer settings or some ideas for him to help him out with this problem.

Second problem is that out of 4 pages, 2 are blank with nothing on it and there is suppose to be text and images on those pages, anyway how to fix this too?

Print background colors and images.

IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advance Tab-> scroll down
to the Printing headline. Make sure it is unchecked.

Well I started up my laptop today (Acer Aspire 5100), and it acted as usual, but no users show up. Its just the WindowsXP logo, no users or options.

One thing that does happen if left alone for a few minutes, the "Protected by Kaspersky Labs" shows up on the top right corner.

I tried booting in Safe Mode, but it just hangs, never gets to loading Windows.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is there a way to make it so Task Manger will always Show Processes From All Users WITHOUT turning off UAC? It seems like every time I open task manager and want to check the running processes I have to click the button in the bottom left. With UAC off, it seems to always show all users, but with UAC off I can't use my gadgets..

My home pc (Win7 Ultimate) is part of my business domain, but I also have local user accounts for my wife and kids.

At the login screen there is a icon for the last user that logged in and another labeled "Other Users" for the rest of the users, so that if a different user needs to login they have to select "Other Users" then enter the DOMAIN/USERID and password to logon.

Is there a way to have it show all three users with their icons at the login screen so they can just click their icon and enter their password (all have passwords) to logon. Getting them to enter the DOMAIN/USERID correctly everytime is a challenge since the slash has to go the correct way and the domain name is somewhat long.

I can never find Appdata when I go into my login name folder. I have to search it. Any reason why?

It's a hidden folder and you can't see them by default. Go to Computer and at the top left, there's a button that says "Organize". Click that and choose "Folder and Search options". Go to the view tab and underneath "Hidden Files and Folders" click on "Show hidden files and folders"

When I go to HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop and change PaintDesktopVersion to 1 it shows build number only to one user.
But I want to it show that to all users and when I create new user.

How to do that think?

I'm not one to recommend messing with the registry, and I can't tell you where exactly to change the setting you want to change, but I *can* tell you that HKCU stands for HKCurrentUser. That means the setting will only change for the person modifying the registry, as he/she is the "current user."

Hi, There seems to have been a problem with a Microsoft Antispyware update, so those of you who have BOTH Norton software, and use Microsoft Antispyware program, had better wait till the next update which will hopefully resolve this:

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?

Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.

Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?

I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.

Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

Does anyone know what explorer is showing OneDrive instead of Chad in this case? You can see the first pic that shows OneDrive, but then when you select the folder in the explorer path, it shows the true path is D:\Users\Chad.
Is this a registry setting?

I've found a found two windows xp based APPS that'll optimize your performance "Right Mark CPU Utility" is the 1st one and your just set the profiles to the optimal performance... another tip that you could use to optimize your turion 64 is to uninstall the turion 64 update with evidently keeps your processor running at a specified temp with does limit your performance. Another application that you could use to optimize your ati 200m or anyother mobile based graphics card is Power Strip.. Hope's this helps everybody out!

Hi,

I am trying to change the registry to show hidden files/extensions.
This is for an unattended install, so I don't want to do it manually for each user. I know I can change the registry for the current user, but I can't seem to find out how to do this system wide. I need to show hidden files and file extensions for all users, such as when a new user account is created, extensions and hidden files are shown.

Is there a way to do this system wide?

I have tried adding the dword following entries:
Hidden (Value=1) & HideFileExt(HideFileExt=0) to the below locations in the registry

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

I read that if you change HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\NoHidden & HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\HideFileExt to the above values it should change the default key for HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced (Hidden & HideFileExt)

None of the HKLM entries I have tried as above appear to work.
Is there actually a way to change this system wide?

I'm trying to find a registry hack or something to address the change Microsoft made going from Windows 8.x to Windows 10.

Here is a quick run-down of what Microsoft changed:

My wife and I have 4 children. One of our PCs is used by all of the children. There are 5 Microsoft accounts set up on that PC, one for each of the children plus one that I have set up as the Admin account.

Windows 8.x indicated on the Sign-in Screen which users were already logged/signed in. So, if the Sign-in Screen was displayed, you could see right there if anyone was signed into their account. For example, if 2 of the 5 accounts on our PC were already signed in, then right there on the Sign-in Screen below the picture and name of those 2 users that are already signed in, it says "Signed in" for each of those 2 users. You know right there at the Sign-in Screen if anyone is already signed in that might need to sign out before a restart or shutdown.

Windows 10 removed this information/indication. If you are already signed into an account, then you can look and see which users (if any) are signed in and there is no guesswork needed. However, if you are at the Sign-in Screen and want to restart or shutdown the PC while one or more users are signed in, then you are told users are signed in but have no idea which users are signed in. The only way to know which users are signed in is to sign into one of the accounts and find out.

I have several Windows 8.1 computers with more than 8 user accounts in a small business environment. At the login screen, you have to scroll to the right to see some of the user names. How can I either make the user login icons smaller so that they all fit on a single screen, or make them show in multiple rows so they all fit on one screen?

The only way to see who is connected to which wifi is if you can connect and login to the router for each wifi network and it lists the IP addresses that have been allocated to each device.

I created a new image using Win XP Pro (32bit)and made my profile the default user profile on a stand alone computer. My profile includes our company logo as the desktop background. My user account has full admin rights. When a user with non-admin rights logs in - the logo does not appear as the desktop background. When I go to display properties and click on desktop, the company logo is already selected as the background. The apply button is greyed out but once I hit OK the logo appears on the desktop of the non-admin user. The logo remains for the user even after logging off or rebooting the pc. However, if I delete the user's profile and they log back in the logo disappears once again.
Any user account with admin rights sees the logo, those without admin rights don't. Non-admins have to go to display properties and click OK for the image to appear on their desktop.
The logo file is a .jpg and it's stored in C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper.
Any idea how I can get the logo to show up on the desktop for all users automatically?

And I would like "Open link in new tab" work as Chrome or an option to set that way. "Open link in background tab" is the 3rd option & as a Chrome user I have the habit of clicking 1st option so gets annoying.

After forgetting the local administrator password, I followed that guide for offline editing the SAM registry file. All the accounts work fine, except the built-in administrator account which I can't do anything with (if I try to enable it using the 'net user' command, net crashes).

I suspect I may just have to live with this, but does anyone have any suggestions about how to 'clean' the administrator account in the registry so that LUAG works again?

Check your Windows version!

If you have the Windows 10 Home edition, then it will not have Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc) included in it. It's only available in the Pro and Enterprise editions instead.

As Administrator, I?ve created my own folders for my documents. These are located in the D: partition of my hard drive; and they are shown in the Library section of the contents of the computer, on the left.
Now, when opening the computer from the Guest Account, my own folders do not appear in the Library, all right. But just below the Library there appears the rest of the computer content, including the D: partition, and any Guest can access all the folders and files there, including my documents.
How can I hide the folders of each User from any other Guests, not only in the Library but also in their actual location in the hard drives?

A:Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

OK this appears to be a simple permissions issue.

go to your root folder on the D: drive and right click the folder and select properties.

on the security tab you should see a list of those who have access to the folder - Make sure that your user has full rights and remove all rights to the "everyone" user group. This when OK'd should xascade down to all files and folders contained in the folder

If you wish you can adjust the rights available to any other particular user on the system - Make sure that you do not remove or change any rights given to system or administrative users unless you fully understand the result

Does anyone out there know how to change the computer owners name. I'm not asking about the users name, but I need the one you type in when you first format the hard drive and XP prompts you for the owners name.

Hello Vistax64, my name is Lee. My laptop is a Sony VAIO VGN-N365E running Windows Vista Premium. When I first got it I had went by a different name then, so when I did the startup and chose my user account name I used "Songocide". Now I go by intist. Well I was wondering if there is any possible way of changing this name to something else.

Here is a pic to help show what I'm talking about:
So I would want to change it like this:
C:\Users\Songocide
to:
C:\Users\intist

Is there anyway I could go about doing this?

Hi Lee,

Yes, but it is a little involved. The only way to change the username at the C:\Users\(username) location is to either create a new account and delete the old one, or reinstall Vista.

1. Create new Administrator account.
User Account - Create

2. Delete the old account account from within the new one.
A) Select Keep Files to save the contents of the old account's personal username folders to a folder on the desktop of the new account.
B) Transfer those files into your new user account personal username folders.

Hey guys, I set up my computer using my live account and it had my old name "BinLuen" when I made this live account a while ago. I want to change it (already changed it in my live account), but obviously I don't think it would reflect the change after win 8 has already been set up. Is there any way I could change it?

Hello jh, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The best way to do this would be to switch your current account to a local account, add a new local user account with the name you want, change the new account type to be an administrator, sign out of the old account, sign in to the new account, switch the new account to be a Microsoft account, copy any shortcuts or files (music, documents, etc...) from the old account into your new account, then delete the old account when ready.

My friend has a laptop running Vista Business. He recently joined a domain and now instead of clicking an Icon he has to type in Domainname\user name and then his password. Is there anyway in Vista to either create icons (one for logging into his domain and one for logging into home) or maybe a drop down box like XP had where you can select the domain or local computer? Let me know as I don't know much about Vista yet but just installed on a Virtual PC to test some things out. Thanks alot guys.
